Cultivating Coastal Connecticut Bring Home the Birds and the Bees; Creating a Healthy Habitat with Native Flora Grassroots organizations throughout New England have successfully engaged state governments in promoting the long-term sustainability of vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems threatened by invasive plant species. These efforts help protect waterways, agriculture, native animals, and, ultimately, the region’s distinctive way of life. Conservation areas have been developed by Connecticut’s Highway Department where mowing is now negligible encouraging pollinators to thrive. Bumblebees have suffered a severe decline over the decade due to climate change, loss of habitat and pesticides. “No Mow May” is a catchy slogan popularized in the United Kingdom by Plantlife, who encourages homeowners to temporarily refrain from mowing their lawns to give flowering plants, and the insects that depend on them an opportunity to flourish. The campaign challenges a deeply ingrained assumption: that a uniformly short, manicured lawn is inherently preferable to a more diverse landscape. Here at home, across the Atlantic, the University of Connecticut has likewise encouraged homeowners to rethink the conventional turfgrass monoculture. Its guidance on re-visioning the traditional lawn invites residents to consider alternatives that can provide habitat, support biodiversity, conserve resources, and deliver other ecological benefits. UConn’s educational efforts also emphasize the importance of recognizing problematic plants and making informed choices about landscape species that are better suited to local ecosystems. These initiatives point to a broader issue than whether a lawn is mowed in May. They ask us to reconsider the environmental consequences of treating the conventional lawn Photo:Kelsey Weinkauf

as the default landscape. Frequent mowing, limited plant diversity, and the replacement of naturally occurring vegetation with uniform turf can have consequences for habitat, soil, water, and the organisms that depend upon them. Education is therefore essential. Before we can change long-established landscaping practices, we need to understand how they developed, why they persist, and what consequences they may produce. The goal is not necessarily to abandon lawns altogether, but to move beyond the assumption that every yard must conform to the same manicured model. By learning to identify problematic plants, choosing appropriate alternatives, and allowing portions of our landscapes to function more naturally, homeowners can make deliberate choices that contribute to healthier and more ecologically diverse communities. Ultimately, the question is not simply “When should we mow?” It is “What do we want our landscapes to accomplish?” Reconsidering the conventional lawn opens the door to a more thoughtful approach; one in which beauty, usability, habitat, and ecological function can coexist. A fresh landscape starts this Fall!

118 River Road, Madison, CT on 16 Acres

$5,000,000

Some properties are defined by the house that sits on them. Others are defined by the land itself…by history, landscape and a sense of place that simply cannot be created. This is such a place. This remarkable 16 Acre piece sits on the Hammonasset River with over 1500 ft. of frontage, unfolding across open hayfields, tidal marshes and expansive river views. The landscape changes with the seasons and the light, grasses moving with the wind and water reflecting the ever-changing sky…a landscape that is both bucolic and breathtaking. This is an exceptional setting for a distinctive country residence, a private retreat or a place to enjoy a quieter chapter of life. An existing, well-appointed, three bedroom ranch home sits on the property and enjoys the same remarkable views. Comfortable as it stands, the home could ultimately serve as a guest house, artist’s studio or private office. After two centuries in the same farm family, this is a rare opportunity to become the next steward of an extraordinary Connecticut landscape.

The Leaf I hang upon a tree in Spring My beauty glowing bright. Through Summer until early Fall I never think of flight. But as days wear on and on I’m bored and yearn to fly. So don’t be scared if as you walk You see a leaf go by. I spin, turn in splendor true And somersaults I do. As I go I wonder why I cannot start anew, once more to hang in beauty’s eyes a young fragrant leaf. To think I’ve grown old and gray is hardly my belief. Some people think me burned in fire or dust in slow decay. When all the while I”m in the trees From which I’ll bud next May. Leo Connellan Poet Laureate Connecticut
