BETTER TIME NOW! THAN

Firstly, the Philippines has one of the highest adolescent birth rates in Asia partly due to social and cultural pressures, poverty, limited sex education and restricted access to contraceptives SB 1979 aims to provide full and comprehensive information to adolescents, helping them prevent early and unintended pregnancies and their life-long consequence, among other things a direct response to the rising case of teenage pregnancy

According to the data released in 2023 by the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA), teenage pregnancies recorded among girls under 15 saw an increase of 35 13% from 2022 to 2023 This means that pregnancy of children 15 and below had an increase, and is still climbing making the bill all the more needed

Teenage pregnancy is especially bad as it causes complications not only to the mother but also to the child

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2024 adolescent mothers (aged 10–19 years) face higher risks of illnesses such as eclampsia, puerperal endometritis and systemic infections than women aged 20–24 years Meanwhile,

with a goal of lessening

pregnancy see the light of day? Nevertheless, most senators and various religious groups expressed their disapproval of SB 1979 as it ‘introduces policies that could undermine the innocence of the Philippine youth and traditional family structure

With President Ferdinand Marcos Jr even stating that,

“If this bill is passed in that form, I guarantee all parents, teachers

Education (CSE) a curriculumbased process of teaching and learning about the cognitive emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality and is ‘guided by international standards ’ However, Sen Hontiveros said that she is open to revisions in the bill to ‘unify us in our fight against teenage pregnancy ’ With all that being said, when will both sides come to an agreement with this bill?

There will never be a better time than now The more this goes on, the more children are at risk of not receiving proper education about their sexuality and therefore, more at risk of teenage pregnancy President Marcos and members of the senate must come to an agreement to pass this bill in order to prevent or lessen the case of adolescent pregnancies safeguarding the health and future of our children

The Price of Fitting In

“This is the place where I belon he thought that crosses the mind who seeks brotherhood by joining But because of this, students wer broken, bound by fear, and unfortunately, once regarded as a bonding ritual, has evo deadly practice plaguing schools and unive Fraternities must condemn and enforce str penalties for violence within the group as i an uncalled for death

We must know that no brotherhood justifies inflicting harm upon another, true brotherhood does not demand blood

Fraternities must condemn and enforce stronger penalties for violence within the group as it only leads to an uncalled for death Even with the existence of the Republic Act 8049 commonly known as the Anti-Hazing law, aimed to eradicate hazing the persistence of hazing-related cases still reveals how obstinate fraternities are despite the rules being implemented

The first recorded hazing fatality in the Philippines occurred in 1954 Gonzano Mariano Albert, a University of the Philippines student and Upsilon Sigma Phi member, succumbed to injuries inflicted during a hazing ritual Despite the outcry hazing persisted as seen in the 2017 death of Horacio Castillo III, a University of to Tomas

student In 2018 ten Aegis Juris members were sentenced to life imprisonment under the Anti-Hazing Law for their involvement in Castillo's death

According to a senate press release on October 1 2024, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian reported that 17 deaths have been linked to hazing, with the most recent case occurring on September 29, 2024 The victim, Ren Joseph Bayan a Grade 11 student from San Pablo National High School was beaten to death by members of the Tau-Gamma Phi fraternity

Many seek a sense of belonging, but this desire is often exploited by fraternities and sororities wherein promises of camaraderie and inclusion instead forced them to

dehumanizing and dangerous practices

The reliance on the AntiHazing Law to address these issues is not enough, fraternities need a stronger enforcement with harsher consequences, coupled with educational campaigns inside of their organization to prevent any more casualties

Let us honor the memory of those who have died by putting an end to hazing and any practices that degrade the meaning of our lives thereby ensuring that their sacrifices were not in vain Hazing is not a rite of passage, it is a crime a violation of human dignity that leaves scars far beyond the physical We must know that no brotherhood justifies inflicting harm upon another, true brotherhood does not demand blood

Realities

once asked my great aunt if she favored the Marcos family and without hesitation, she said yes Her perspective, like that of many who lived comfortably during that era, was shaped by a life largely untouched by the suffering others endured.

For her, the Marcos era was a golden age a time when the privileged enjoyed stability and security She didn’t see the lives disrupted by fear, the silenced voices of dissent or the growing poverty that enveloped those already struggling to make ends meet The privilege of not witnessing the pain of others was her reality

Not to mention the financial strain many of us face today stems from the

remember asking myself, "Is it really necessary to learn so many things if I won’t be able to use all that knowledge in my future job?"

en think that “less and now, the nt of Education roposed the of Senior High HS) core subjects urrent 17 to just promising us less more time to ther things But of an impact ave us with the tain knowledge?

ke it in mind less time with more ies for hands-on ems practical But cutting core subjects like literature, history, and science could narrow the way we view the world

These subjects help us understand our place in society, teach us to think critically, and to get in touch once more with the past

Fewer subjects may make the transition to a career easier but it’s important not to lose the foundational knowledge that helps us navigate both work and life

A well-rounded education doesn’t just prepare us for one job; it equips us to tackle challenges in an everevolving world

I’m not completely against DepED’s proposal, especially if it means students get more focused learning or time to explore other fields However we have to consider how limiting our education might affect our ability to make informed decisions in life and the workplace

While DepED claims that fewer subjects will make SHS graduates more employable studies show that many employers still hesitate to hire due to skill gaps A 2020 study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) revealed that only 20% of SHS graduates immediately join the workforce Employability isn't just about cutting subjects it's about bridging skill gaps

Ultimately, a balance between life skills and intellectual growth is necessary I believe we need to equip ourselves not just for jobs but also for life By doing so, we can face challenges head-on and make meaningful contributions to society whether we go straight to work or continue our studies

Marcos regime’s $28 billion foreign debt Excessive borrowing and mismanagement caused widespread economic instability, with infrastructure projects serving a few while leaving others to bear the cost My own family, once upper middle class, now struggles with the rising prices a legacy of that debt

While some praise the Marcos-era infrastructure, systemic corruption diverted

funds meant for public welfare Critics highlight that these advancements came at a high cost, disproportionately affecting the poor

Today’s economic struggles also reflect decades of governance issues and global challenges Rising taxes, including the 12% Value Added Tax (VAT), and escalating fuel prices show how historical debts and ongoing inefficiencies

burden younger generations Recognizing these complexities is vital to push for systemic change

The stability my great aunt experienced came at a hidden cost one that younger generations now bear We are left to carry the weight of decisions made long before people had a voice in them Rising taxes including the 12% VAT, and escalating fuel prices are daily reminders of this ongoing burden

It’s time to confront the larger narrative of privilege and power acknowledging that the cost of privilege is often paid by those who can least afford it This begins with this used to be promoting historical awareness and demanding accountability for the policies that shaped our struggles By pushing for transparent governance and equitable reforms we can address the lingering inequalities and work toward a future where the mistakes of the past are neither repeated nor ignored

Passing SOGIE Bill: A Must!

iscrimination is still a growing problem in the Philippines With a lot disadvantages and prejudice shoved against someone’s Sexual Orien Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE), the SOGIE bill must be passed a LGBTQIA+ community a much-needed protection from discrimination and unf treatment

The SOGIE bill an act prohibiting discrimination in regards to one s sexual orientation and gender identity or expression has yet to be passed after a year of being pending at the committee level after its approval in the House of Representatives This bill aims to safeguard the rights of the members within the LGBTQIA+ community

For instance, the SOGIE bill intends to protect the youth who suffer from severe discrimination by their peers In a study made by The Trevor Project entitled Philippines National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People in 2024, out of

the more than 5000 LGBTQIA+ respondents, 74% reported that they experienced discrimination due to their sexual orientation or gender identity

This discrimination also lead members of the group to feel excluded, making them susceptible to mental health issues and, worse, suicide In the same study, 75% of participants aged 15-24 have considered suicide, 46% of which even attempted it A larger number compared to last year’s 34%

In addition, gender-based harassment is also prevalent in the workplace According to a 2023 article published by

Toxic Stigma

“If you’re a real man ” quote thrown around weaponizing the masculinity of men As a man, this toxic notion where ‘boys don’t cry’ restricts me, and most definitely other men, from opening up to their family and friends.

Ever since I was young, the stigma against boys who cry has always been prevalent In the Philippines and all around the world if you are a man, being vulnerable with your emotions makes you a target of insults and offensive remarks But this leads to men disregarding their mental health The most important question I have is: When are we going to give importance to men’s mental health?

No matter the age, boys are taught not to cry and be, essentially, an emotionless robot when it comes to dealing with painful experiences

This leads to a build up of sadness and frustration that manifests into bouts of anger and violence and substance abuse such as alcohol or tobacco, which often links into depression and, worse, suicide men’s silent crisis

To illustrate, according to the suicide data gathered by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) from 2015-2019, the cases of suicide for men total to 10,575 deaths, or 2,115 per year In contrast, the cases of suicide for women total to 2,620 deaths, or 524 per year This means that men are more likely to commit

suicide per year So, how many men should die before we take this issue seriously?

Moreover, with the lack of education about their emotions, anger and violence paired with hypermasculinity a psychological and sociological term exaggerating a man with emphasis on physical strength aggression and sex life as coping mechanisms, men are less likely to ask for help in regards to their mental health, creating a mental barricade that will carry on throughout adulthood

In addition the lack of a proper male role model a man open with his emotions, not afraid to be vulnerable hurts me and other men that have no idea on how to be a ‘proper man ‘ According to the National Center for Fathering’s report entitled The Consequences of Fatherlessness, children from fatherless homes are more likely to

be poor become involved in drug and alcohol abuse, drop out of school, and suffer from health and emotional problems

So knowing these I question you now: When are we going to give importance to men’s mental health?

Us, men, face a lot of scrutiny whenever we express ourselves and show vulnerability, a reflection of our society’s inability to empathize with our circumstances in regards to mental health But now is the best time that we get rid of this toxic stigma and raise awareness about men’s mental health Now is the best time that we promote support groups and safe spaces for men to open up whilst being comfortable And as men we must encourage fellow men to open up about their emotions by supporting them and making them feel seen and heard during their most vulnerable state

‘Til Law Do Us Part

arriage is a sacred union, but what happens when it becomes a source and suffering? In the Philippines, where divorce remains illegal, many individuals are trapped in toxic or abusive relationships While annulm

exists, it is often costly to most Filipinos, leaving them without limited option

Critics argue that legalizing divorce will weaken marriage but can sanctity be preserved when individuals are forced to endure harm? According to a Social Weather Stations survey in May 2024, 50% of Filipinos support the legalization of divorce, recognizing the need for an option when marriages fail The opposition also claim to protect children, yet studies including one from the American Psychological Association show that children in highconflict homes often fare better when their parents separate True sanctity lies in mutual love and respect, not in suffering

Globally, divorce is recognized as a basic right, allowing individuals to rebuild their lives In contrast, Filipinos’cultural values one

that is deeply rooted in Catholicism often emphasize family unity at all costs While these values hold significance they must not overshadow the fundamental

Legalizing divorce is not just about policy; it’s about humanity.

need for safety dignity and happiness True family unity should not demand silent suffering

The Philippines must follow suit to other countries It is not about destroying families but about giving individuals the opportunity to heal and create lives built on respect and love Lawmakers must confront this

issue head-on and provide realistic solutions Policies such as affordable filing fees and accessible legal aid programs could ensure that divorce is available to all not just for the privileged few

For too long, the lack of a divorce law has forced countless Filipinos to endure years if not decades of unnecessary suffering It’s time for lawmakers to listen to the voices of those who have been silenced and offer a lifeline to those in desperate need Legalizing divorce is not just about policy; it’s about humanity

FalseFreedom

Dangerous Dependence

very June 12th, the Philippines commemorates its so-called independence from Spain in 1898 However, in their yearning for sovereignty, Filipinos overlooked the United States’ hidden plans to take control of the country. Now, a perennial question arises: “Are Filipinos really free?”

Take, for instance, the ongoing dispute in the West Philippine Sea Despite international arbitration rulings in its favor, the Philippines remains unable to assert its sovereignty against China's aggressive actions Has it been a century of false independence?

To sugarcoat the false independence US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the US gave the Philippines $500 million on July 30, last year, as help to defend its claims against the aggressive Beijing in the disputed South China Sea calling it a “once-in-ageneration investment to modernize and boost military

capability of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the country s coast guard but there’s no pure intention of the US helping the Philippines to become self-reliant

Moreover, in terms of agriculture, the Philippines is the world’s largest rice importer According to the Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service, the Philippines' rice imports are projected to reach 4 7 million metric tons (MT) this year, an increase of 2 2 percent from the previous estimate of 4 6 million MT, underscoring food insecurity and dependency on imports despite having great agricultural potential

Isn’t it ironic that a nation blessed with abundant natural resources and a strategic geographic location falls dangerously overdependent on other countries?

Isn’t it ironic that a nation blessed with abundant natural resources and a strategic geographic location falls dangerously overdependent on other countries?

In order to protect the nation’s national interest, the government and the people must work hand in hand to enhance military capabilities and agricultural development

Through the AFP Modernization Program, the Philippines should strengthen defense ties with the EU and European nations emphasizing technology transfer to enhance military capabilities and develop the local defense industry These measures will help brace for more aggressive Chinese intrusions in the West Philippine Sea Fight for a genuinely independent Philippines; only then can Filipinos truly celebrate every June 12th

chool days are supposed to be lively and filled with excitement, yet here we are, confined in a cramped, stuffy classroom without proper ventilation The heat and humidity are so oppressive that they extinguish any enthusiasm to learn. Sitting in such an environment, how are students supposed to be inspired by school when they're stuck in a jam-packed and scorching classroom without a simple fan to provide some relief?

A significant issue that affects the learning environment of many schools today is the absence of electric fans Proper air circulation in classrooms is important for students' wellbeing and productivity so without fans, classrooms become hot and making it harder to focus and learn

A study condu Harvard Universit high school stude performed poorly when they experi school year More Environmental Pr Agency (EPA) re hot classro can have a academic potentially performan 4-7% per y then lead t opportunit Furthermo according recent sur the Allianc Concerned Teachers ( public sch involving 1 participan March 24 t that most in cramped which can issues for s with medic conditions summer approache

students achieve their full potential when they are stuck in classrooms with these uncomfortable conditions?

As a matter of fact, a survey conducted among students at North Fairview High School (NFHS) on November 8-9 last year, revealed that 92 3% (19 out of 20 students) reported being affected by the lack of fans in their classrooms

Classrooms at NFHS typically hold over 40 students, with only 4 to 7 fans, some of which are unable to function properly, there is insufficient ventilation for students in each room How can schools justify allowing students to

struggle in a sweltering environment when proper systems are within reach?

It's hard to understand why schools continue to prioritize funding for things over necessary classroom improvements The wellbeing of students, especially their ability to focus and learn, should be a top priority Yet it seems that many schools overlook this basic necessity leaving students to endure uncomfortable conditions in their classrooms

Tough Row to Hoe:

How Difficult Work Immersion Can Be

y three cups of coffee, four hours of sleep, and weak body, trying to overcome a load of school work needed to be accomplished Senior high school is indeed hellish especially for a student who is sweating it out to be an honor student The twelfth grade, in particular, is full of hardships and includes multiple requirements, including job immersion. Just how would a fatigued and helpless student immerse himself in a more exhausting environment of employment?

Schools should view the installation of electric fans in classrooms as something practical Parents, teachers, and school authorities must take the necessary steps to address the lack of fans in classrooms to ensure that students do not suffer in suffocating and sweat-inducing heat By doing so they not only improve airflow and reduce the uncomfortable heat, but also create a more comfortable learning space for everyone where students can focus on their studies more effectively and be in a better mood for improved academic achievement

hen the sun rises each morning, its golden light spills over the fields, factories, and bustling streets of the Philippines signaling the start of a new day filled with promise and opportunity. Yet, for countless children in the Philippines, the warmth of the sun feels like a cruel taunt Their mornings don’t begin with dreams; they begin with the heavy burden of child labor, often in dangerous or exploitative conditions

I often find myself thinking about these children, who should be in school, holding books instead of working long hours under the scorching heat of the sun For many their childhood is traded for survival

In fact, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) Annual Labor and Employment Report in 2023, over 1 million Filipino children aged 5 to 17

were working, mainly in hazardous sectors such as domestic work and street vending

Furthermore, the International Labour Organization's (ILO) report titled Child Labour in the Philippines: An Urgent Need for Action highlights that 5 5 million children remain at risk emphasizing the country's ongoing struggle to address this issue

These children should be in school, not working to please hurried customers or memorizing ways to earn tips The classroom with its bright windows and eager chatter, feels like a world away Instead, their lessons are in survival learning the value of every coin for the meals it brings to their families' tables

Even so, efforts to combat child labor are underway, including government initiatives like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which supports amilies

Work Immersion commonly known in college as On-the-Job Training (OJT), is an implementation of the Department of Education (DepED) from its DepED Order No 30, s 2017 It was signed to involve senior high school students in the field of work they desire to partake in, a bridge between intellectual learning and real-life application Even if this is truly beneficial, would it not be stressful for someone who is an amateur?

As someone who has not experienced having a job before entering one is undoubtedly a culture shock Not only will you worry about what kind of work you will do, but also what type of people you will have to get to know A ‘9 to 5’ job you have to go through for weeks is truly difficult and to make matters worse is the long traffic you have to endure every night just to get home But what is more devastating is how prejudice comes along in your stay at your workplace It takes a strong mindset just to avoid breaking down at

whatever words you might hear from the employees But then again, you cannot say anything as your grades rely on them

Hurtful as you may perceive it it is something that you actually needed a reality check of how and what the world outside really is Being an employee is just as tiresome as being a student Initially, it may only be an obligation you are required to do, but along your way, such experience will do you good Students understand the significance of workplace ethics while cultivating a mindset to see challenges as opportunities It is an eyeopener vital for growth It teaches the youth on what to expect ahead in jobs people and life

Work immersion is an ideal step to adulting a bridge to the future and its possibilities It gives life skills and perceptions that extend beyond the boundaries of what the school teaches Hard as it may seem, but a fulfilling experience indeed

to keep children in school, and advocacy by groups such as the International Labour Organization and UNICEF for stricter laws and parental livelihood programs

Still, even in hardship, a quiet determination remains They dream of a world where no child has to trade innocence for survival A world where the hands that labor are only busy holding pencils, not opening doors for strangers

We can help turn this dream into reality by

supporting organizations fighting child labor, such as UNICEF or local initiatives that provide education and aid to affected families Advocating for stricter enforcement of child labor laws and raising awareness within communities can also create meaningful change

Until that world exists these children march forward, carrying the weight of stolen childhoods With every step, they hold on to the faint glimmer of a future where they can finally be free to live, to learn to simply be

The sunlight filters softly through the dusty blinds, casting long, uneven shadows that stretch across the window Outside, the world is alive busy, moving, full of energy But inside, there’s a quiet stillness, as if the world itself has paused, holding its breath for a moment longer The blare of vehicles in traffic, the chatter of students on their way to class, street vendors setting up their stalls all of it feels distant now, muted by the weight of what’s unfolding around us

As I catch myself staring out the window, watching the familiar sights of the world I once knew. Everything was not the same as it was before, the comfort of normalcy was gone, replaced by a disorienting sense of detachment

Just years ago, life seemed grounded in routine School was a familiar daily rhythm, the streets were always bustling with commuters, and everything felt certain

Then, without warning, the lacking access to the necessary technology or a stable internet connection. Additionally, the GEM Report 2023 discusses the mental health impacts of remote learning, including increased isolation and screen fatigue

“I feel like I was being locked up in an empty space’’ shared my classmate Lyka "Hindi madali na nasa loob kalang ng bahay, naging mahiyain ako makipag-communicate to other people because for a long time, I haven't interacted with different people."

We didn’t just survive, we adapted, and found new ways to connect with friends and family new ways to learn, and new ways to see each other, even from behind the confines of a screen The shift, though harsh and unrelenting, we have the ability to stand firm in the face of change We can’t predict or control what the world will bring, but we can control how we respond to it finding strength even in times of adversity.

So, even in the midst of this overwhelming change A quiet strength a sense of resilience is all we need from within And this wasn’t just something to endure it was something we could learn from We couldn’t deny that everything had changed, but maybe, just maybe, that change was the key to moving forward

The loud sound of thunder echoes across the whole city, accompanied by the sudden, rough pouring of heavy rain I looked outside my window and saw nothing but gray fog The trees, usually so green and vibrant, are now obscured by a dense wall of falling water, their outlines lost in the foggy atmosphere that cloaks the city

As I lean back in my chair, the memory of the previous typhoons weighs heavily on my mind It feels like just yesterday that we were bracing ourselves for the Bagyong Carina that barreled into the Philippines with fury, causing an unprecedented 3 04 billion worth of damage Followed closely by Bagyong Enteng that caused flooding in 121 cities while also causing 14 landslides that resulted in 350 85 million worth of damage, according to the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Operations Center (DRRM-OC) of the Department of Agriculture Both of them brought not only destruction but also the tragic loss of lives

I can still vividly remember the footage of the widespread flooding and displaced families that filled the news after each typhoon My eyes remain glued to the window, fixed on the relentless raindrops drumming against the ground However, as the lightning flashes and the wind picks up, the realization sets in we're caught in yet another typhoon

A feeling of uneasiness washes over me as I think about the potential damage and challenges that this weather will bring I took a deep breath and mentally prepared myself for the storm that lies ahead

Roads are flooded, infrastructure are weakened, and power outages are widespread Typhoons know no bounds, impacting everyone and everything their path

Students are forced to put their studies on hold as schools close for their safety

Workers suffer from job losses as businesses and companies shut down, causing financial strain for many families Families lose their homes and possessions when buildings are destroyed, leaving them displaced and traumatized

When transportation and communication systems are disrupted, communities canbecome isolated, with access to basic services and necessities becoming a daily struggle

Caught in the center of the storm s raging eye, we have no choice but to brace ourselves for the worst

Every moment feels like a tug-of-war between hope and despair, leaving us with little but resilience to hold onto Just as the storm tears at everything around us, it feels as if our own spirits are being tested All we can do is weather the storm, endure the pain, and cling to the hope that eventually the storm will pass And when the storm passes, we may be left with scars, but we will remain standing, resilient and unbroken

Disasters divide, but unity rebuilds.

A mother’s face etched with worry lines watches as her daughter is mesmerized by the vibrant show of Miss Rachel, a fast-paced and English-dominated show

The mother sighed as it was a familiar scene Her daughter had embraced English as the primary language, being promised better opportunities with the language

The delicate familial connection now knotted with the threat of a language barrier Whenever they try to communicate, there is a dull ache in the mother’s heart as her daughter remains distracted, barely able to register her mother’s words her mind too saturated with English, seeming distant a stranger in her own home with her gaze still fixated on the screen

In many households, children are immersed in an English-dominated media landscape, where Tagalog faces an uncertain future There is a struggle to communicate with their relatives, and their vocabulary is a confusing blend of English and broken Tagalog

To Bear a HUNDRED YEARS

In deep, rich, and grasscovered landscapes of the islands of Mindoro, there lives a tribe whose history stretches back to the past

The Mangyan tribe, a tribe that carries a hundred whispers of history through their timeless culture

During the Spanish colonial period, Mindoro natives found themselves caught in the crossfire of a war between two armies battling for domination As a result, many were captured, sold into slavery, and ruthlessly killed suffering enormous hardships due to the hostilities

According to the 2002 National Statistics the Mangyan population in Occidental Mindoro is estimated to be 13,899, which constitutes approximately 3 67% of the province's total population Similarly, in Oriental Mindoro the Mangyan population totals 19,001, equivalent to 2 79% of the provincial population

Among the eight tribes that complete the Mangyan community, the "Hanunoo" people are the largest population They are also known as the artisans of unparalleled skill for their beautiful bayong baskets, created from the leaves of the Nipanipa palm

The process of creating these baskets begins with careful cutting of the palm leaves, their fibers which are transformed into fine strips

These are then woven by skilled hands; each movement is a proof of the

artisan's skillfulness

To make these baskets unique and distinguishable they are embellished with a darker material, such as nito or black fern, and adorned with a unique “pakudos” pattern Their hands skilled and gentle, breathe life into every creation, each strand and bead a symbol of the rich heritage that flows through their veins

women wear “ramit”, an indigo-dyed skirt, and “lambung” or a blouse adorned with pakudos while both genders wear “hagkus”, a woven rattan belt with a pocket

The tribe's attire is more than mere clothing, and wearing these garments is not just dressing; it's embracing a proud legacy

Tagalog, the national language that once nurtured her seemed to be slipping away, slowly drowning away in a sea of English English emerged as the dominant language, capturing every aspect of Filipino Gen Alpha's life–from social media to their education

This linguistic shift extends beyond the four walls of their homes In schools and in society, English reigns supreme with its allure English being a symbol of upper class, if you speak fluent English, you are perceived as wealthy

The future of Tagalog hangs in viewing the multilingual perspective

Perhaps, the mother thought the bridge wasn't entirely broken Perhaps, by igniting that flicker of connection through integration of Tagalog into their daily lives she could find a way to connect with her daughter

Hopefully, one story, one lesson at a time the Filipino language and culture continues to flourish for generations to come

Through generations of resilience, the Mangyan tribe weaves a silent song where identity clings to the very soil they call home

By investing time in understanding their traditions and beliefs, we can become active participants in their preservation Supporting initiatives that aim to protect and uphold their cultural heritage is a powerful way to ensure that these valuable traditions are not lost to the sands of time

Moreover, the Hanunoo tribesmen can be distinguished by their unique clothing Men gather their long hair in a bun called “rutay”, held by a handkerchief, and are clad in “ba-ag”, “alsoag”, also known as loin clothing and “balukas”, or shirts

On the other hand,

The Mangyans are as old as the land that it dwelt upon and, held a history untold within their traditions and beliefs And to preserve their traditions, they moved deeper into the island hiding themselves from the outside world to avoid the effects of modern settlers upon their way of life

Their stories are carried by island breezes, a unique legacy etched deep within the roots of these lands

To bear a hundred years is to carry the weight of history within, to hold the stories of countless generations in the heart of a people who have endured, learned, and adapted whilst staying true to their roots

The Hanunoo tribe embodies every aspect of this phrase, for they have not only lived those years but thrived within them

If there's one thing that makes Teachers’ Month special at North Fairview High it’s the chance to truly appreciate the people who shape our lives in ways we often overlook our teachers October 4th wasn’t just another school day It was a moment to pause, recognize, and celebrate those who not only help mold our minds but also guide us through life s ups and downs

Dedication Dedication HHonoring onoring

Xyrine Estinozo

“Our teachers are not just educators, he said, they are mentors, role models, and sometimes even our second parents ” That’s the truth

They aren’t just teaching us facts they’re helping us grow into the people we’re meant to be

This year’s theme, “Shoutout to Our MATATAG Heroes,” was more than just a catchy slogan it was a reflection of the resilience, strength, and dedication of our teachers The word "MATATAG," a term from the Department of Education’s curriculum, perfectly embodies what our teachers are all about The campus buzzed with gratitude for teachers who pour their hearts into their work

The celebration kicked off with a heartfelt message from our principal, who reminded us of the immense impact teachers have, both in and out of the classroom

Students weren t shy about showing their appreciation, either There were performances speeches, and a raffle where students could give a little something back to their favorite teachers One of the highlights was a lively musical number from a group of Grade 10 students, who rocked the stage with electric guitars and powerful vocals The court was filled with energy as the students played, clearly expressing their gratitude in every note

But the real emotional punch came from a video presentation that featured messages from former students

“Without my NFHS teachers, I wouldn’t be where I am today, one graduate said That sentiment echoed through the court It s something we don’t always realize until we leave school: the lessons we learn from our teachers stay with us long after graduation

acknowledge the deep impact our teachers have on our lives and the difference they make every single day, even when they aren’t in the spotlight

Teachers Month at NFHS wasn’t just another school event it was a celebration of the people who shape us into who we are From helping us navigate academic challenges to offering guidance during life s toughest moments our teachers are the bedrock of our growth Here’s to our MATATAG heroes our mentors guides and the ones who help us become the best versions of ourselves

As the day wrapped up, teachers were presented with tokens of appreciation a small but meaningful gesture to remind them that their hard work is not only noticed but truly valued The applause was more than noise–it was heartfelt thanks It was a moment to

The Lesson I Never Expected To Learn

I stood before the class, masking my exhaustion with a practiced smile The day had been long, filled with lessons paperwork and quiet worries about my students But as I looked at you silent withdrawn, with a shadow in your eyes I knew there was something deeper going on

I tried to reach you, to offer support in subtle ways: a kind word a listening ear extra patience I noticed how your head hung low how your assignments came in late, how your laughter faded Slowly, the pieces came together You were battling something invisible but heavy depression

As your teacher, I felt the weight of responsibility I wanted to help, to fix things, to make it better But I also knew that some battles couldn’t be fought for someone else So I did what I could I reminded you, quietly and often that you were not alone I praised your smallest victories and made space for you to simply be

how much you were teaching me

What you didn’t know was

I saw your courage each day the effort it took to show up, to participate, to keep going despite the shadows in your mind I saw the strength it took to ask for help, to trust so -meone with your strug gles, even when it scared you You taught me that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a kind of bravery You reminded me that as much as I want to be the one teaching life lessons there is so much I can learn from my students

You’ve taught me that it’s okay to feel, to struggle, and to ask for help You’ve reminded me of the power of resilience even when the world feels too heavy

Through your journey, I began to confront my own struggles I realized how often I buried my own pain, how I let the demands of teaching and life push my mental health aside If you could be brave enough to face your darkness, I could try too

I hope I helped you in some small way but you’ll never know how much you’ve helped me

They say teachers shape their students, but sometimes it s the students who sha pe their teachers And for that, I’ll alw ays be grateful to you

n the quiet moments of my thoughts, I find myself captivated by the pages of books While others may be swept off their feet by love, I find myself utterly captivated by the creations of authors far and wide If the world were to be transformed into a place where books could speak I would listen to them with open ears without a second thought

Love has always been something I've kept a comfortable distance from But everything shifted when I picked up a specific book Its words seemed to reach out and grab ahold of my heart, demanding to be felt fully and honestly

D

That same day I stumbled upon someone who completely captivated me with their kindness, sense of humor, and all things I've ever yearned for in a character

The song “Apple Cider“ suddenly popped into my head, reminding me that even a small crush is still a form of love, even if it's different from how others experience it

ear,AppleCid e r

It came upon me like a sip of apple cider, refreshing and sweet, and I found myself getting more and more addicted to it with each turn of the page The song perfectly echoed the fluttery feelings I experienced, a reminder of love's most innocent and purest form, yet powerful beauty in unexpected places

So, to my dear Apple Cider, I now see that you're not just a person who accidentally walked into my life You're a book that captured my heart the same way a sip of apple cider is sweet and intoxicating

With each page I taste your adventures, your dreams, and your stories, making them feel like my own But there's something about the way you hold my attention that feels different I can't explain the connection I feel towards you, the one that makes me think of you even when I'm not reading A feeling that haunts me every time I close a book, hoping I'll open one that leads me back to your pages

Sometimes when we love it feels like it’s spilling out, wanting to go extreme lengths and do grandeur acts to prove our love’s intensity Sometimes it’s loving the idea of a person, not the person itself To be loved by me meant to be the perfect man, and to be my lover meant to put me on a pedestal Yet, unyielding, he remained like a prince on his white horse obeying each command, making no room for mistakes steady, like a home in a world that’s harsh and aggressive

We were young and raw enjoying each other’s company He treated me with the tenderness most would long for the type you'd see in romance films He loved me in gentle, quiet, subtle ways, that even the messiest type of love, the type that’s too much to contain, too scary to touch because it seems so heavy would be easy to bear

Soon enough, we began to pick up each other's vocabulary we’d go on calls and laugh at phrases laced with inside jokes We'd see each other in the things we love Each moment soaked in the memories of us Those moments longing stares, hidden touches, unforgettable sparks too wrapped in the comfort of having him near I should have reminded myself that they are all empty assurances

When December came, our worlds grew apart and his acts became less genuine I knew soon enough the warmth of his touch would be as chilly as each December night With how quick we were to click like two halves of a whole, it comes to no surprise that this is only a fleeting romance Even then, in my heart I had hoped to welcome the new year with our hands entwined once more I hoped, with all my heart, that his faith in us is strong enough he’d heal without losing me in the process

Bittersweet as it may be, our shared experience is a ghost of a love that left too soon a fruit of teenage love Still I hope it doesn’t feel natural for us to forget each other I hope it isn’t a necessity for us to forget whom we felt safe to undress our heart to I hope we don’t end up right back where we started strangers this time with memories

for reforestation and coastal resilience programs, but broader efforts are needed to meet several international commitments like the Paris Agreement to limit global warming and address climate change effectively

While the spread of greenery might seem positive, it reflects rising global temperatures that threaten Antarctica's fragile ecosystems and could invite invasive species As its greenery grows so does the urgency for humanity to act not just for distant icy realms, but for nations like ours that stand on the climate frontlines

COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE The Secretary-General takes the podium at COP29 2024 delivering a powerful ‘Moment of Truth’ address, urging global leaders to take decisive action on climate change

between October 22 and November 16, six powerful storms swept across the country, with three making landfall as major typhoons–displacing over 200 000 people, causing widespread flooding, and testing the limits of disaster response systems in the nation

Typhoons, the Pacific equivalent of hurricanes, form when warm ocean water fuels rising air, creating a rotating storm system The storms gain strength from high humidity and favorable atmospheric conditions, which were notably extreme this year

dataset This synthetic database uses decades of storm data to predict thousands of potential storm scenarios under varying climate conditions It showed that today's climate, warmed by 1 3°C above pre-industrial levels makes the Philippines likely to experience three major typhoons in a single month once every 15 years At 2°C of warming, this frequency increases to once every 12 years

With typhoons becoming more intense, the recordbreaking typhoon surge foreshadows the challenges ahead Early warnings,

ions, and preemptive s of schools and ports save lives during last torms, however by ber, over $17 million had been spent on emergency aid, with damages exceeding $47 million

The United Nations (UN) has emphasized the need for more robust international support to help the Philippines adapt to the growing risks of extreme weather

The WWA study underscores a stark reality: climate change is amplifying the conditions that fuel extreme weather While scientists refine tools like IRIS to better predict and understand these events, the focus must also turn to bolstering resilience in vulnerable regions

The World Weather Attribution (WWA) study found an increase that made the record-breaking typhoon activity 25% more likely to occur due to typhoon clustering Scientists from the WWA project linked these events to warming seas and shifting atmospheric patterns This year, the Philippine Sea saw potential intensity levels that were 1 7 times higher than in a preindustrial climate

For a climate-resilient future recovery and transformation are much needed With last year s record adapting to a world of stronger storms and rising seas will require significant investment, international cooperation, and a long-term commitment to reducing emissions How can Filipinos prepare for what’s next?

A total of 255,466 homes were damaged, including 19,010 that were destroyed, leaving thousands without adequate shelter in a span of 4 weeks.

o foster mindful leadership and mental well-being, the CENTREX Program, sponsored by the Quezon City Government and the Schools Division Office of Quezon City (SDOQC), concluded its training cycle on January 18

The theme "Mindful Leadership: Caring for Your Mental Health and Others " aimed to equip student leaders with the tools to handle academic and personal stress while fostering empathy for others

From October 2024 to January 2025, 130 student leaders participated in the training which was held at Quezon City Science High School (QISAY) every Saturday featuring inperson workshops and three online sessions

“The goal was to nurture future leaders who aren t just academically inclined but also capable of leading with mindfulness and understanding ” Precious Paula Palizada one of the CENTREX scholars of Batch 26 said

The program addressed major stressors identified through a survey, which found that 69% of students cited academic pressure as their primary source of stress prompting the training to focus on reducing stress through activities designed to promote inner peace and leadership development

Each session covered a range of topics, divided into three parts: building inner peace understanding mental health and developing leadership skills with students applying these lessons to projects that encouraged practical implementation of their newfound skills

The program culminated with participants developing projects anchored in mindful leadership

As part of the closing ceremony, former Mayor Belmonte and Dr Carleen S Sedilla, the Schools Division Superintendent, congratulated the scholars and emphasized the importance of integrating mental health awareness with leadership skills

CENTREX continues to provide student leaders with the tools they need to balance academic challenges and personal well-being

Research conducted by Palizada and Tagal will guide the implementation of incoming projects at NFHS to address student stress and mental health concerns, with plans to launch these initiatives over the rest of the school year

ix years have passed since COVID-19 began its relentless rampage on the world with everyone already moved on from the bitter memories inflicted have we really moved on?

“Wounds heal, but scars do not,” an ancient saying that mirrors the current state of the world While illnesses can be treated, the effects and horrendous memories continuously haunt the victims of COVID-19–their cries still echoing persistently

When Pfizer the first vaccine against COVID-19, was released in the Philippines the victims of COVID-19 desperately clung to this hope, but some people found the vaccine suspicious and had secret animosity against it The skepticisms of some were not groundless due to the biggest vaccine failure of the Philippine government, the Dengvaxia

The Dengvaxia Incident happened in 2015 when Dengue Virus (DENV) spread in the Philippines and the government had to contain the rampage of DENV Former President Benigno Aquino III made a negotiation with Sanofi to purchase 3 million doses of Dengvaxia, but this decision led to the worst outcomes;

organ failure and hundreds of casualties

As a result, this outcome ruined the public s confidence towards the immunizations programs of the government, thus, the vaccine stigma was born and its lingering effects still plague the current times

The labor force of the Philippines took a heavy blow According to the Bank for International Settlements, the unemployment rate rose approximately 17 6% in April 2020, from 2 4 million in the January 2020 pre-pandemic period to 7 2 million in April 2020, the total number of unemployed nearly tripled

Low-income workers felt this blow on a deeper level With the leading factor being the vaccination stigma, ever since Dengvaxia's biggest failure, the nation’s trust on vaccines remains an improbable task to regain Despite experts' attempt at easing the anxious people, they failed Now the employment rate of the Philippines has stabilized The Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) stated that the 2024 unemployment rate decreased exactly at 3 9%

To victims of failed vaccines this number proves useless, because the stigma is now deeply ingrained into their traumatized hearts

Only 55% of Filipinos have expressed willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and as of September 2021, only 30% of the population have been fully vaccinated

never thought I d care about battery recycling it seemed like a job for scientists

recycling

Here’s where the story gets its zest: researchers found citric acid the same stuff in lemons can extract lithium, cobalt, and nickel from old batteries without toxic waste A 2023 study in Green Chemistry showed this method could recover up to 95% of critical materials offering a sustainable and simple solution to e-waste

all while helping us stay alert throughout the day

What happens when a person is sleep deprived? Based on my clevelandclinic org people with chronic sleep deprivation are at a much higher risk of

This discovery could truly be the “lemon aid” for our growing e-waste problem

Imagine turning what was once landfill fodder into reusable resources, all thanks to the natural power of citric acid

But here’s the catch: scaling this solution to a global level isn’t as easy as squeezing a lemon It requires major investment in infrastructure to collect and process old batteries, as well as government incentives to promote recycling

According to the United Nations, over 50 million tons of e-waste were generated globally in 2022 yet only 17% of it was recycled

The potential is electrifying, but it s up to all of us to make it happen Governments companies, and individuals need to take charge From better disposal systems to investing in research, every effort counts Let’s stop letting batteries pile up in drawers It’s time to make battery recycling as easy and natural as squeezing a lemon

the World Economic Forum

Implying that Filipinos are lacking anywhere from 1 55 to 3 7 hours of sleep daily, with there commended sleeping hours for teens being 8 to 10 hours as stated by kidshealth org

Ask yourself, Am I getting enough sleep?” You may need more sleep if you have a hard time waking up in the morning, have trouble concentrating fall asleep during classes, and feel irritated, moody, or sad

While sleep deprivation is

country with poor waste disposal discipline In a study made by the Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO) of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), 45 19% of all garbage from Metro Manila was not disposed of properly This means we throw away almost half of all the garbage we produce improperly

Similarly, this pollution due to poor waste management directly contributes to the contamination of our environment, making a breeding ground for disease-carrying vectors such as rodents, mosquitoes and flies that increase the risk of catching an illness for people living within the vicinity

Moreover, the methane from the anaerobic decay our garbage produces contributes to the greenhouse gas in our

atmosphere and the emission of nitrous oxide from the combustion of solid wastes worsening our already disastrous climate

A song from more than three decades ago about improper waste management is still relevant even today So, should we allow ourselves to muddy our environment because we are too lazy to properly dispose of our waste? A resounding no

We must inform everyone about the damaging outcome we are headed toward if we continue inappropriately handling our garbage Let our voices be heard by spreading awareness about the negative environmental consequences of our improper waste management online and offline to slow down climate change and our need for immediate action, such as intense implementation of laws against improper disposal of waste and stronger coordination with our local government to clean our community s sewage and vacant lots, helping with cleanup drives within our community to restore its purity

hen the sun rises, so does the chance of harnessing solar energy in schools With every beam of sunlight reducing electricity costs, what s stopping us from acting?

As energy bills soar, schools are looking for ways to cut costs and redirect funds to education Solar panels can help schools save up to 40% on electricity bills annually For instance a school in Quezon City saved ₱50,000 per year after installing them, according to the Philippine Department of Energy (2023) These savings can be used for classroom improvements or urricular ms the benefits

r panels go

d just cost savings Schools that solar panels also create unique g opportunities Students can directly e with renewable energy logies, gaining hands-on experience ainability and environmental science actical education encourages future tions to think critically about use and its impact on the planet, g the way for tomorrow’s leaders

Solar energy also helps schools fight climate change Unlike coal or gas solar panels produce no harmful emissions If all schools switched to solar, it could reduce carbon emissions by 500 000 metric tons annually, according to the Philippine Department of Energy This shift not only reduces a school’s carbon footprint but also shows leadership in sustainability Though the initial cost of installing solar panels ranging from ₱200,000 to ₱1,000,000 (Philippine Department of Energy, 2023) may seem high, government incentives and financial support make it a practical option Schools can apply for grants or low-interest loans to cover installation costs Over time, the savings on electricity bills outshine the initial investment, with minimal maintenance required to keep the system running efficiently

Solar panels offer a bright solution for schools cutting costs, reducing environmental impact and inspiring students The question isn’t whether schools should adopt solar energy, but rather: why wait for the sun to set on this opportunity?

here is a new sheriff in the sports town where people can vigorously tap their keyboards or phone screens playing online and earning money for it but offers some of the most intense moments in sporting history, and its name is E-sports

But what even is this term? E-sports, short for electronic sports, is a rising type of sport that involves electronic gadgets and in most cases doesn't need a specific playground with specific dimensions and its high accessibility makes it a top choice for Gen Z people nowadays, since they can earn money and gain fame while playing their favorite game

"But where's the gaining money and fame part?? It's just people playing video games " Well, this is where competitive tournaments enter the scene, where several players or teams clash with each other with one goal: aim for the highest prize With some titles having professional leagues that offers players a stable salary just for playing in an e-sport team

"It's just people playing games masquerading as a sport " While esports isn't that dramatic and physical like a buzzer-beater in basketball or a clutch save in soccer, studies have shown that esport athletes have increased information and spatial processing (Toth, A et al , 2020, Converging Evidence Supporting the Cognitive Link between Exercise and E-sport

Performance: A Dual Systematic Report) compared to their physical counterparts, which mostly excels on the physical side of things

The sport offers jobs too, from players, casters to league operations staff It offers

some of the heaviest prizepools with the record going to DOTA 2's The International 10 (TI10) which has a prizepool of 40 million USD (2 3 billion pesos) with Russian-based organization Team Spirit receiving 18 million USD (1 05 billion pesos) just for becoming a champion in this tournament It also amasses high viewership with League of Legends' 2024 World Championship having 6 7 million peak viewers (excluding Chinese viewership) according to esportscharts org

But Filipinos are not behind in terms of e-sports as the Philippines has the most number of world titles in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with five and recently clinched the Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) World Championship by a team named Elevate who fielded an all-Filipino playing squad and coaching staff Philippines also has a team in Valorant's Champions Tour (VCT) in Team Secret who constantly competes against other premier orgs in the Pacific like Paper Rex T1 and DRX

But promoting it is no easy feat as it requires conviction and cooperation from the higher-ups and community tournaments are the way as it provides the first step to becoming a pro for aspiring athletes Healthy gaming seminars are also a way to promote e-sports as it teaches on how to balance responsibilities in and outside the virtual battlefield

And finally, To answer the question: Where's the sports in e-sports?? Its in the people that support the scene the players who grind themselves endlessly just to attain glory the casters that give life to these precious moments, and ultimately, in the game that forms a global community and that binds people regardless of age, status in life or race

“Every move matters.”

his is the motto of Maritony Anog of 10-Citrine as she competed in the Chess Division Meet 2024 held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Schools Division Office of Quezon City on December 14

14 student-athletes across the city fought across six rounds of Swiss play, with each match having 25 minutes of time with 10-second increments per move

Swiss play is a tournament format where players compete in multiple rounds paired against opponents with similar scores, without eliminations

Anog won her first three matches but was defeated in the next two by opponents from Far Eastern University

(FEU)

The match against FEU put her at a disadvantage position as time pressure affected her focus and dulled her strategic thinking

I knew I was running out of time and it made me rush moves that I would normally think through more carefully ” Anog said

She sacrificed important pieces to create openings under time pressure but her opponent successfully delivered a checkmate

Despite these challenges, Anog secures 3rd place

making her a reserved player for Team Quezon City in the upcoming regional meet

She had been competing since elementary school and had gained recognition in high school due to her potential and dedication to chess

Anog s third-place finish in the Chess Division Meet is a significant accomplishment, against 14 participants and her ability to secure a podium spot despite the competition's intensity
