Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. There is so much to be thankful for in this wonderful World of Archery. I have had the opportunity to serve our ad vertisers, subscribers, writers/photographers and read ers for the past 25 years with the magazine. Actually my career in archery started over 50 years ago when my boyfriend and I started shooting in an armory in Alexandria, MN. That seems like a long time ago but it also seems just like yesterday. We are honored to have JR Absher break the good news about Jennie Richardson’s latest honor a place on Outdoor Life 25” most influential people in the world of hunting, fishing, conservation and the shooting sports. See his report on page 330. On page 334 starts the report on the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). Our first Australian report comes from Neil Curtis. We are look ing forward to bringing you reports in the future from every state in the US and every state in other countries also. Now that the fire is lit, let’s give it lots of fuel. Regional Championships The regional championships are underway with just a few left to win your spot to compete at the World Champi onship. Tournaments are open to anyone who wants to come join HSO and compete in the fun. We will be using McKenzie Targets with the ASA 12 ring scoring and the Motion Target system set with a maximum range of 50 yards (40 yards for Youth and Traditional divisions) and 5 scoring targets per round. Two rounds provide the com petitors qualifying score. Competitors may shoot as many qualifying scores as time allows but only their highest score will be used for ranking.
Arrows need to be matching; specifically color of fletching. Only five (5) arrows are allowed at the shooting station. After the round begins, dropped arrows can not be retrieved until round is over - Dropped arrows score zero. Bring extra arrows, head to head competition can result in damaged arrows. ATTENTION: Arrows are to be drawn on a level plane with the target! If angle of arrow is greater than 30 degrees above the target at any time during the shooting round, shooter may be disqualified. Check out the website for a complete list of the rules.
Money Class Only: Top four (4) places in each division will be invited to compete in the World Tournament. If anyone of the top four cannot attend the World Competition the invitation will be offered to the next placed competitors. Top 16 qualifying scores will be bracketed for head to head single elimination on the final day. Trophy Class does not qualify for the World Tour nament, the top three places at the close of the competition will receive trophies in each division.

Jennie Richardson Named to “Outdoor Life 25’9 Well-Deserved National Recognition for Archery Leader, Educator by J.R. Absher In early April 2007, John Taranto, an associate editor for Outdoor Life magazine, sent an email to about two dozen selected outdoor communica tors and regular contributors to the magazine, requesting their input to a special project being undertaken by the publication. JR Absher Taranto explained that the country’s leading-circulation outdoor magazine was planning to produce a special section its December/January 2008 issue called "The Outdoor Life 25,” in which 25 of the most influential people in the world of hunting, fishing, conser vation and the shooting sports would be honored with profiles and special recognition for their outstanding contributions. “We’re looking for people who have made a difference as the grassroots level,” the editor wrote. “Is there anyone in your community, state or region who we should absolutely not miss? Who do you know who has been doing yeoman’s work in promoting, advanc ing or protecting the future of hunting and fishing, and has been doing so very quietly and without much at tention?” Well, nearly seven months have passed since Taranto first called for nominees for the 2008 Outdoor Life 25. The magazine rlW editors and executives have made the final choices, the profiles Jennie congratulates Cena Cherry on have been written, her archery award. and the magazine has gone to press. The fortunate readers and subscribers to U.S. Archer Magazine—who always have an inside track to everything about archery—will know who was selected to the Outdoor Life 25 list from the world of bows and arrows before the one-million plus copies of the New York-based magazine hits the streets. Pretty cool, huh? It was late June when Jennie Richardson, the state coordi nator of the Kentucky Archery in the Schools Program, profes sional archer, longtime educator, and enthusiastic-promoterof-archery-24-hours-a-day received a letter of congratulations from Outdoor Life editor-in-chief, Todd Smith. The letter read, in part: “When most of us step into the woods or wade into a clear mountain stream, we rarely stop to think about the many people who have made enjoying that experience possible. Yet there are thousands who devote their time, talents and energies to preserving and building this way of life we call hunting and fishing. Some are conservationists, others are public servants, but most are just ordinary sportsmen like us. We thought it
would be fitting to recognize some of these incredible people for their efforts. For this reason, we’ve begun a new program called the ‘Outdoor Life 25,’ dedicated to acknowledging those individuals who have had the greatest positive influence on the world of fishing and hunting.” Many U.S. Archer readers already know Jennie Richardson through the incredible work she has done with the Kentucky Archcry in the Schools Program, and how her efforts helped launch the NASP, and subsequently, the national foundation that now guides the international program. Many readers also know her as an outstanding archer and fierce competitor at IBO, NFAA and ASA venues ycarafter-year. Through the OL 25 award, Richardson will deservedly achieve attention and recognition to a heightened degree, out side and beyond the relatively small archery and bowhunting industry. As part of her achievement, she will be honored dur ing a special event held in conjunction with the 2008 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT Show) to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center February 1-5. As an avid bowhunter and angler since she was a child, Richardson integrated archery into her middle school math class in the late 1990s- a move that eventually helped pave the way for more than a quarter million Kentucky middle schoolers to experience archery through the National Archery in the Schools Program in Kentucky annually. A newspaper story about Richardson’s successful archcry program at her Whitley County school attracted the atten tion of principals with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, who contacted her and began conversations about archery in the schools. The agency had been actively research ing ways to break down barriers and introduce archcry into high school athletics. As a result of the Richardson/ KDFWR collaboration, the “On Target for Life” curriculum was launched in the Bluegrass State in 2001— the forerunner to NASP—as a joint venture between KDFWR and the Kentucky Department of Education. In 2002, the educator, wife, mother and national champion archer officially became the state coordinator for the Kentucky Archery in the Schools Program. Since then, the physical education curriculum known as the National Archery in the School Program (NASP), is being taught to students in 3,800 schools in 42 states and several foreign countries, including Canada and Australia. By the time you read this, three new states—Hawaii, New Mexico, and New York—may already be part of NASP. with Massachusetts and Connecticut expected on board in late 2008. Using the original Kentucky program as a model, the national program partners the resources of state game agen cies and education departments to provide educator training, equipment and guidance, while instructing students in the fundamentals of international style target archery. Those who have been involved in the NASP program since its inception are quick to attribute its meteoric growth in great part to Richardson’s early energetic leadership and unbridled enthusiasm for archery in Kentucky’s program, helping pave the way for a thriving national effort. “With her love of archery, bowhunting and teaching, Jennie

unquestionably set the benchmark for the NASP program. She’s the one who proved it was achievable on a national level,” said Ken Watkins, president of the International Bowhunting Organization (1BO) and consultant for NASP since its incep tion. This past June, the annual NASP National Tournament and Conference attracted 1577 student archers representing 123 schools and 20 states—the largest invitational student archery tournament in North American history. At its current rate of growth, NASP directors estimate that by 2010 more than 2.5 million elementary, middle and high school students could be shooting bows and arrows—and that school teams will be competing with one another, just like they play basketball and other team sports today. Thanks to the inspiration and leadership offered by Jennie Richardson during the first months of the fledgling program in middle schools across Kentucky, there is no limit to where the “life sport” of archery can take young people in the over expanding NASP programs now underway across the country and around the world. And Richardson shows no signs of letting up, as she con tinues to expand Kentucky’s archery programs into colleges and summer camps. U.S. Archer readers and those of us who know and respect Jennie have seen her diligent work with educators and adminis trators as she’s helped guide the program from its infancy—and we know her awards and accolades are indeed well deserved. Watching her as both a competitor and as a person, we have come to expect nothing but the absolute best from this awe-inspiring, Eastern Kentucky dynamo. /St,

Press release................ October 22, 2007 (Shelbyville, KY) The National Archery in the Schools Program has chosen Responsive Management of Harrisonburg, Virginia to conduct a unique and rigorous research project in nine states. The NASP Foundation Board has authorized Mark Duda, Executive Director of Responsive Management to begin the year long project. Researchers will examine school system data related to student grades, behavior and school attendance. NASP is recognized as the most prolific shooter recruitment program in history but may be causing some surprising additional benefits. A 2004 study done by Responsive Management indicated that school children who participated in the NASP in their physical education classes like school better. Improvements in behavior and attendance at school overall were also reported. The new study will also measure whether student performance in other subject areas has also improved. NASP has grown from humble beginnings in 22 Kentucky pilot schools in 2002 to more than 4000 schools in 44 states, Canada and Australia. More than 2.3 million school children in grades 4-12 have received archery instruction from their physical education teachers. Project partners include the Arizona Department of Game and Fish, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Department of Natural Resource, National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation , and the National Archery in the Schools Foundation. NASP is the most successful youth archery program in his tory and will be operating in every state in the United States by the end of 2008. Duane Shroufe, Director of the Arizona Game and Fish Department had this to say about NASP, “The NASP is a substantial focus in Arizona’s archery and bow hunting pro grams. With the Arizona Game an Fish Department’s efforts to increase hunter recruitment and retention, the NASP curriculum is reaching our non-traditional customers therefore expanding our potential growth towards the participation and support of outdoor recreational activities. We are pleased to participate inn the research and to assist in the growth and development of the sport of archery.” The program has been adopted by the Victoria, Australia Police Department for use with at risk and underprivileged kids. In Nova Scotia, Canada the Ministry of Education has adopted the program for its schools. Twenty seven teachers have been recently trained to conduct NASP lessons. The program was designed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the Kentucky Department of Education and Mathews Archery to teach an outdoor skill and to engage students in physical education classes. NASP lessons are taught by the physical education teacher with a focus on international-style target archery. NASP teaches a lifetime skill
in a controlled, safe environment. Universal fit NASP equipment is useable by every 4th-12th grade child and the teacher, and is durable, affordable and identical in appearance and function. In order to meet and enhance student learning and accountability standards, many schools integrate archery into core content areas including math, science, and history. Teachers, principals, students and parents have reported inter esting results of the NASP. There are numerous anecdotal reports of NASP being credited with increasing attendance in physical education class. Students report improvements in self-esteem and a better relationship with their teacher(s). Collaboration is occur ring with other teachers in math, science, history and humanities. Some teachers have suggested NASP is making better students in other classes. “We have seen tremendous success with the NASP program in Georgia both in the gym and in the classroom,” said Dan Forster, Director of the Wildlife Resources Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “This program is a win- win for everyone involved, most importantly the kids. We look forward to the continued success of the NASP for many years to come,” Forster went on to say. NASP has been linked to increases in participation in archery clubs, the personal purchase of archery equipment and hunting. The new study is anticipated to take about twelve months to complete.
Program Philosophy NASP is intended to teach target archery in a safe, educa tional indoor setting. It was designed and written by teachers with national standards and core content considerations. NASP is intended for all students regardless of athletic ability or experience. Accommodations are routinely made for physically challenged students. The equipment is designed to be universally fit which means that the fourth grader and the twelfth grader will use the same equipment. Boys and girls learn and compete together. NASP certified training is mandatory for all instructors. As states move to implement the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2002 ( “No Child Left Behind”) and engage more students in the learning process, education administrators will be trying to close achievement gaps among students of different racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. The creators of NASP intend for all students to be given an equal opportunity to learn, practice, and excel dependent on individual effort and practice. The NASP phi losophy of standardized equipment, training, and implementation is intended to assure that there is “no child left behind.”

The National Archery in the Schools Program - Australia is simply the most vi brant. encouraging and the fastest growing well being sports program in schools in the state of Victoria today. Of course the NASP uses archery as the mechanism to engage both the children and youth to re-capture re-engage and direct them towards a belter life both physically and mentally. When you talk to the NASP - Australia Team you will not hear about great scores, talk of archery equipment, politics. What you will hear is how this program is quite literally saving kids lives. This program is saving them from self harm, from distress, from disengagement in schools and poor morale. If you talk to Ingrid Drew', the well being officer at ST Augustine’s Primary school in Frankston, Victoria, Australia she will give you specific stories that reinforce the message that the NASP is “Changing Lives One Arrow at a Time” The changes we have seen in our chil dren have been outstanding. The program is outstanding as well but the management of the program in Australia is the key to the success. the NASP program in Australia are sent to lock down the sustainability of the program for many years to come. The Advance Program administered by the Office of Youth, Victoria has allowed NASP - Australia to link into more than 400 state high schools. This program is the single most rewarding and challeng ing program that will simply feed NASP youth and direct them into beneficial and encouraging community interaction. Available to Victoria State High Schools, the Advance Program offers up to S9,700 to schools with 21 or more students to engage in community projects. Those schools have a great advantage here in that they get all the NASP gear, training and support as well as a the ability to enter and compete in

NASP events, and develop their local com munity by planning and developing such projects as teaching the elderly health and archcry assisting in the strengthening of relationships in that arena, building NASP archery clubs that link in feeder primary schools, disabled students, disadvantaged students and other community groups to the world of archcry but more importantly to the world of achievement.. .Who said self esteem ceases to be a personal issue when you left school? Now NASP isn’t for everyone and by that I mean not everyone can be involved. The training policy in Australia strength ens the licensing agreement with the NASP Foundation that ensures that the program standards are maintained rigorously. In fact this has been the single reason why the NASP has been so successful...we won’t change the standards. Having said that there has been people contact NASP - Australia wishing to be trained as an in structor and go out and do the program in the school. The fact is they don’t really un derstand the core functions of the program. It is “archery in the schools program”, run by the schools for the school students. The NASP program teaches school children archcry in school through the school day. In assessing a snapshot of the legislation that ensures the safety of our children and youth in schools we find that there are police checks, authorities, processors and protocols that ensure the safety standards are maintain. Not just anyone can teach children in school and not just anyone can be a NASP instructor in a school. While 338
NASP - Australia recognized the valuable contribution people would like to make to the NASP program unfortunately it may not include becoming an instructor. On the 30th of November NASP -Australia will present the program to the Australian Council for Health. Physical Education and Recreation, (ACH PER) 2007 ACHPER Health and Physical Education Conference. With over 200 sessions and 1,100 delegates, is the largest of its kind in Australia. The conference program is designed for those teachers who wish to keep up to date with curriculum changes in health education, physical education, sport and outdoor education, in line with VCE, the Victorian Essential Learning Standards, Vocational Education and Training and other Department of Education and Early Childhood Development initiatives. NASP - Australia is enjoying resound success. However I cannot complete this article for Arlyne without mentioning that NASP - Australia is indebted to the support and encouragement that we have received from the NASP Foundation, the state coordinators, industry professionals and the NASP schools. Thank you for your undying support and we all look forward to help kids grow up and be engaged in the life long sport of archery with a strong sense of self and community that will carry successfully through life. Recently, the National Archery in the Schools Program® (NASP®) was the focus of a briefing and archcry clinic sponsored by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus on Capitol Hill. The event took place in the Rayburn House office building and caps 5-1/2 years of remarkable growth for NASP. Roy Grimes, NASP president, along with ten students from Roanoke, Virginia assisted more than three dozen senators, congressmen, and other dignitaries as they learned to shoot and improve their target archery skills. The event was sponsored by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and was hosted by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus. Caucus co-chairs Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) and Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) kicked off the breakfast briefing by expressing their support for innovative outdoor and physical activities for America’s youth. Both congressmen are avid out doorsmen and bow hunters and stated the importance ofproviding activities such as NASP to engage students in physical education class. “Activities like NASP will keep our kids focused on the need to remain physically fit and active,” said Congressman Kind. “NASP proves that we can find physical activities for all kids and you don't have to be able to dunk a ball or kick a field goal to enjoy your physical education class,” said Congressman Ryan. The Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus supports the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSFhttp://www.sportsmenslink.org/about/staff.asp). Foundation president, Jeff Crane, was quick to point to the economic impact of hunting, shooting and outdoor related recreation. “NASP is a great introduction for millions of kids to the shooting sports. Having a program like NASP helps wildlife conservation through the sale of bows, arrows, and equipment. It’s the only sport where girls and boys can participate side-by-side on the same team. NASP is a winner for conservation and introducing youth to outdoor skills. It’s a great way to grow the sport of archery,” said Crane. NASP president, Roy Grimes, highlighted the remarkable five-year history and growth of the program. “Target archery taught in the NASP method is one of the safest activities for kids. NASP is taught by physical education teachers in grades 4-12, and 94% of the students say they enjoyed their archery lessons.” To date, more than 2.3 million kids in 43 states, Canada and Australia have taken archery lessons from their PE teachers. Grimes went on to cite other data from a 2004 study done by Responsive

Management of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The study was funded by the Archery Trade Association and indicates that 84% of the students expressed an interest in archery after completing the class. Almost 80% want an ‘archery club’ and many schools (37%) actually started after school archery clubs. Most signi ficantly, 27% of NASP participants later purchased archery equipment. NASP meets or exceeds national and state physical education standards. Each teacher participates in Basic Archery Instructor Training regardless of prior training or experience. “NASP equipment is universal and fits every student and is taught in the school gym,” said Grimes. The original goal of NASP was to operate the pro gram in 25 states by the year 2008. Canada’s entry in the program last month marked the third country which has adopted the NASP. Victoria, Australia implemented the program in 2004. The breakfast briefing was attended by several members of congress, dozens of congressional staffers from the U.S. House of Representatives, members of the U.S. Senate, and a number of conservation organizations and supporters. In addi tion to Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-Wl) attendees included: Senator Wayne Allard (RCo), Congressman Leonard L. Boswell (D-IA), Congressman Brian Bilbray(R-CA), Congressman Steve Pearce (R-NM), and Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA). Also in attendance were Mitch King and Michelle Duerr from the Archery Trade Association, Mary Beth Charles from the American Sport Fishing Association, Matt Hogan, executive vice president of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, and Ken Schwartz, Government Affairs and communications manager for Safari Club International. Following the breakfast, everyone was invited to the basement of the Rayburn House Office Building to shoot Genesis® Bows with ten students from Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, Virginia. David Whitehurst, Director of the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Department and Karen Holson, VGIF NASP coordinator hosted the clinic. More than three dozen participants attended the 2-hour clinic. “We’re proud of our NASP program and especially these great high school students from Roanoke. They showed remarkable poise and confidence as they taught con gressmen and their staffs to shoot,” said Director Whitehurst. The Roanoke students provided one-on-one attention to the congressmen and their staffs. On several occasions, the kids used positive language and encouragement to improve the success of their “new students.” One congressman was running late for a meeting and was in the process of leaving when he was reminded by Roanoke student Emily Waddell that he could not leave the shooting area until he had, “pulled his arrows from the target.” Security requirements in Washington, DC were strict. Kevin Stay, president of Mathews Manufacturing, Inc. was quick to point to the great cooperation from the United States Capitol Police. “We received remarkable cooperation from the Capitol Police. Moving bows, arrows, targets, equipment and the Roanoke High School students into Washington, DC was a challenge. Jack Looney, as sistant to the Sergeant at Arms and Lieutenant Kathryn J. Stillman helped us every step of the way. They are tremendous ambassadors for the United States Capitol Police,” said Stay.

Award from the University of Minnesota, two American College of Surgeons Award, and this last year, a very prestigious award from the American Surgical Association, which chose our labora tory for an $80,000 prize. These groups include the top surgery professors throughout the country. We were happy to receive this award because we were in competition with every laboratory in the country. Also, this award was from our surgery peers. Dr. Dan Saltzman has been a very important part or our laboratory system. He received his Ph.D. in designing the gene transfer system. Dr. Brad Feltis, also, has been in our laboratory and continued the gene transfer work. Dr. Lee Soto. also, has worked in our laboratory and has demonstrated a most important advancc-that this system can be used prophylactically to prevent cancer spread. This is not only important and exciting for us, but, also allows us to go ahead with human trials very rapidly. Our work was also presented at a large surgical society and we were deemed the number one experimental paper of that meeting. Also, new work at the present time is being carried out by placing another gene, which is fluorescent, which means it turns green. We arc placing that onto the Interleukin-2 gene area and this will allow is to track the cells so that we can identify the kill ing power and where the killing occurs. All of these advances arc important because they bring us one more step toward what we want and that is the reduction or disappearance of cancer. We arc also working very intensely on placing the gene in a prepara tion for neuroblastoma, which is the number one childhood solid tumor. This tumor has been shown in the last several months to be susceptible to our gene therapy. This is a major advance for children.
Cancer Prevention Model 2004-2006 By genetically engineering first, then giving the tumor (mini mal tumor volume), 40% of animals grow no tumor and the re maining 60% of animals generate 90% less tumor when compared to controls that die loaded with tumor. This is a breakthrough-a preventative system. Thus, after a colon, breast, or pancreas etc. resection with possible micro metastases, this form of therapy may prevent the formation of gross metastatic disease. Human trials hopefully will start in 2007. It is your support over the past fifteen years that has been responsible for the success of the pilot projects that we have been able to carry out in our laboratory. We have been able to carry
these projects our immediately instead of waiting for long periods of time for grants and this is the reason that we have been able to rapidly make these advances. For this, we arc deeply indebted. With this approval we hope to start these trials by this summer and funds from this event will go directly to pay for those trials. age bracket, his prowess as a world class compounder, if anything, continues to rise, culminating this year in victory in the National Field Championships, shooting near perfect 360 rounds, and defeating the likes of Clint Freeman, Pat Coghlan and Zoran Singerov. A solidly built, fifty plus year old, his economical, fluent style, and focused demeanor, exude confidence, and his composure in National and interna tional outings is rightly respected. Like many leading compound expo nents his earlier years were spent as a high class recurver, representing Australia at the World Field Championships in both 1994 and 1996 after winning the National recurve field title in 1990. Dennis is a resident of the central north western New South Wales town of Armidale, where he runs a successful automotive workshop. A highly respected member of that community, winning sportsman of the year awards, he has been his club’s president for the past 24 years, and has played a very significant role in coaching in Country New south Wales, his students having reached state and national level status. His success as a recurver has since been overshadowed by his outstanding results as a compounder since 1999, where against world class shooters such as Clint Freeman and Zoran Sigerov, he has carved his own niche in Aussie archery folklore with National title victories, and fine performances for his country at World Championship level. His win in the 2006 National Field over Clint, Zoran and Pat Coghlan was repeated this year in Perth, with high 350 rounds in less than perfect conditions. Now a 54 year old, with 5 children and 7 grandchildren, Dennis continues to elevate his scoring levels, with a recent 1394 FITA and a world Master’s 90 meter record of 339. A competitive archer now for over 348
three decades, his relative isolation from the capital city archery activities has in no way impaired his rise to international status. His robust physical stature, and his friendly, approachable nature have made him an Aussie Archery Icon, and there is every indication that despite his maturing years, his best may well be yet to come. Dennis is a grateful recipient of a bow sponsorship from the Mathews Company in 2006, and shoots an Apex 7, right hand, 30.5 inch draw at 56 pounds. His arrows for target competition are EastonX 10’s,410,31 inches with 100 grain points, fletched with 187 Flex Fletch vanes and Beiter in out nocks. On the field course, where his results are legendary, he uses ACE 430’s, 30.5 inches with 100 grain points, Flex Fletch 175 vanes and Beiter in out nocks. His indoor shooting (like most Aussie archers who enjoy year round affable shoot ing weather conditions) is pretty much limited to the National postal event, and his arrows are Easton E75 Platinum 2213’s, 32 inches in length. Dennis shoots with a Sure-loc Supreme sight fitted with a Titan Scope and a Golden Key rest. His stabilizer is a 30 inch Beiter single front model and his bow string a Zebra as supplied with his Mathews Apex. He utilizes a Carter Solution 2.5 four finger release. Despite his busy work load, family and club commitments, and Armidale’s relative isolation from the major Australian capital cities, Dennis has continued to appear at all the major tournament championships and to shoot repeated world class scores. If enthusiasm and competitive focus are the hallmarks of an upper echelon com pounder, then Dennis Carson is a name which will continue to grace the leader boards both nationally and internationally for many years to come. z

An American in Denmark - again by Erik Kornbek We have a long and very pleasant tradition for seeing some of the world's best archers here in Denmark - they come to give us, the Danish archers. some good ideas about how to get a better grouping, be better prepared for a tournament, etc. - and believing that it is possible to be the winner. The first visit was Rick McKinney back in 1993 Erik Kornbek - a co-operation between Hoyt/Easton and DANAGE of Scandinavia. This visit was the first in a series of visits from USA where recurve and compound archers have helped to develop the skills and also the interest for archery in Denmark. The Danish Archery Federation arranged the latest visit directly with John Dudley - an initiative that gave lots of inspiration to all the archers attending two semi nars at the Danish Elite Centre for sports in Aarhus (the second largest town in Denmark).

An interesting Power Point Picture - how much or how little are you investing in the aspects of archery. John provided supporting information to a very simple recipe that a coach told him years ago about “how to be a winner”. Step 1: Learn to hit the center of the target. Step 2: Repeat step 1 - yes, that is easy enough. Surely an easy way to get there, but it can be hard enough to hit the center of the target - and repeat it one shot after the other can be a “little harder". Some archers can do it, and John is one of them. It is always nice to hear some of your own ideasconfirmed to be right, especially if the person confirming it is someone who has shown that “it works”. John also talked about another American expression and one also used on this side of the Atlantic the K.I.S. philosophy- Keep It Simple - why make it complicated ? - It will

1 must admit that I was a little “shocked”, when John told us that it could easily take one year to fully develop some of the muscles to gel your shoulder to be in the right position - but again, if you want to be the best, “you will have to put a lot in it" and also be patient for what will come out. I understand why some archers are very good and some not because some work hard and is patient but some are not. As mentioned in the beginning, there have been many American Archers in Denmark and I have also had the pleasure of meeting many at tournaments around the world - always smiling and positive - John Dudley is surely on of the archers I will be very glad to meet again. With the tournament season in the books, Scott Archery’s pro staff shooters proved once again why Scott Archery is everyone’s number one with Scott shooters winning over half a million dollars in total cash and prizes in 2007. It began in February at the World Archery Festival in Las Vegas, NV, where Scott Archery pro staffer Chance Beaubouef used his Longhorn IV SS to earn his third Vegas Championship. In the ASA, Nathan Brooks shooting a Longhorn III SS displayed some incredible shooting by winning in Paris, TX, and contin ued to be a dominating force by finishing second in the overall point standings. Some of the toughest things to do with a bow and arrow include shooting while the wind is blowing, while it’s raining, or while you’re shooting uphill, downhill or on side hills. Because I have produced over three dozen archery videos with over a dozen world and national champions, 1 have been able to “pick their brains" and discover their techniques for shooting in these conditions. Also, because my wife and I spent six years shooting competitively in Hawaii where the wind blows almost constantly, we got a lot of experience prac ticing these “do’s and don’ts of playing the wind.” And since then, 1 have picked up some additional tips that make up a fairly comprehensive “arsenal" against wind, rain, and on hills that I now teach. Due to the length and since the conditions are so different, we’ll look at each separately. In the last issue, we covered Part 1 of Shooting in Adverse Conditions: Shooting in the Wind. In this issue, we’ll discuss shoot ing in the rain and on hills. The following should better prepare you to make the best of a bad situation.
up moisture, which can cause it to weigh a little more, and therefore hit slightly low at longer distances. You are better off in this situation with plastic vanes, rather than feathers. If you absolutely must shoot ar rows with feathers, weatherproof them with Scotchguard™ or one of the commercial waterproofing treatments. Whatever you shoot, keep your arrows dry. Put a plastic bag over your quiver, covering your arrows. Also, you should use a scope cover to avoid getting your scope wet.
Shooting in the Rain If it is raining and you absolutely have to shoot, there is no magic. Most people who shoot, don’t shoot well. But, there are a few factors to consider that may help you. The “air resistance” is greater when the air is loaded with humidity and/or drops of water. This can slow down the arrow, or the arrow and fletching can pick

Try adding a yard or so on longer shots to compensate for the lower arrow speed. Since there are so many bow-arrow setups and so many different kinds of rain, the more you practice and experiment with your equipment in the rain, the better your results will be. You don’t have to worry about developing snapshooting or punching in the rain, because it doesn’t usually move your sight around violently and unpredictably like the wind does.
Shooting Up and Down Hills Most shooters learn the hard way . . . that up and down shooting angles cause a new set of problems. A lot of people don’t know, for example, that as you draw to anchor on a downhill or uphill shot, you need to bend at the waist and maintain the top “T-formation” of your upper body (see diagram). If you don’t, you will find that it’s real hard to get your front sight in the middle of your peep, among other

things. Another problem arises ifyou draw normally and then elevate your bow for an uphill shot. If you put excessive “heel pressure” on the bow handle to elevate your bow, when you release the shot, the bow will kick up because of the pre-loaded torque on the handle and you’ll probably miss it high. Good shooters, especially if they shoot a round wheel or soft cam bow, put alignment marks or tape on the cables at near-peep-sight height so they can check it at full draw. These marks ensure that they arc al the exact same place at every draw. They check these marks first before align ing the front sight in the peep. They realize, unlike most people, that if you are shoot ing uphill, your draw length gets slightly shorter. When shooting downhill, your draw length gets longer. This is because of the draw angle and arc, and also the shoul der and arm position of the shooter. Also, you will soon discover that your sight marks may be off when shooting up or downhill. As a general rule of thumb, when shooting above or below level: 1) make no corrections from -10 to +15 degrees. 2) for targets higher than +15 degrees or lower than -10 degrees, shoot as though they were about one yard closer. 3) For uphill and downhill shots, the amount of correc tion needed increases with range. Slightly more corrections are needed when shooting downhill. For example, at severe angles, such as 45 degrees, you have to shoot a 30 yard target for 22 yards, and a 60 yard target for 44 yards. These tests were done at 250 FPS, with aluminum arrows. Lesser corrections for carbon arrows are neces sary. This information was furnished to me by Freddie Troncoso, who stresses that your tests may vary, because of differences in draw weight, draw length, arrow fletch, and other factors. Therefore you need to experiment with your own equipment, to find out what works for you.
here's the secret for defeating this phenomenon . . . before you draw the bow, try leaning a bit toward the hill which, in this example, would be back on your heels . . . and tilt the top limb of the bow into the hill (to the left in this example) as you draw. Then level up from left to right, thus eliminating any body or hand torque that gravity would have caused. When you release a good shot, it should go in the middle. The above techniques should help you immensely when trying to shoot under pres sure or in adverse conditions. But remember, you will have to adapt these to your style and/or system and practice or test them until you are comfortable with them.

Shooting on Side Hills If for example, you are trying to shoot a target on the side of a hill and your back is to the hill, you will notice that most all of the holes in the target are on the down hill side of the target. This phenomenon is caused by pre-loaded torque via gravity. As you try to draw, gravity wants to force you to lean downhill to keep your balance. The normal course of action in this circum stance is to come to full draw, and then try to force the bow to an upright position in order to level the sight. This will be rather hard to do, as gravity tries to pull you the other way. As you release the shot, the bow is now pre-loaded to the downhill side and, in this example (for a right-handed archer), will torque to the right upon explosion, causing you to miss to the downhill side. Do you shoot consistent scores in prac tice but your performance falls far short of that at a tournament? Are you extremely nervous and unable to control the excessive pin movement? Is your thinking process running rapidly in all directions? When the tournament is over, are you embarrassed or completely disgusted with your perfor mance? If the answers to these questions were “no.” 1 am happy, because I know that you are comfortable with our great sport and will have an enjoyable future shooting. If the answers were “yes," it is obvious that what you are doing is not working and maybe it is time for a change. I would sug gest that you develop a mental program. Developing a mental program that will maximize the performance is a challenging endeavor for most archers. Many archers make it appear easy and natural to stand in front of a crowd and shoot a tournament. Most of these people will tell you that it took time to develop such a demeanor. In
order to have a solid mental program and maintain it, several facets of the mind have to work in conjunction with each other. First, let’s look at the conscious mind. It can only concentrate on and handle one thought process at a time. Too often, during competition an archer will let the mind dwell on thoughts that will erode the relaxed, smooth form that is used on the practice range. When the thinking process is directed at concerns of ones ability to successfully compete, the self-doubt will quickly produce tension and anxiety that will alter the normal shot sequence. The archer will no longer be in a comfort zone and the performance will suffer. Since the conscious mind can only process one thought pattern at a time, make that thinking a positive influence. Most shots that are missed are due to a breakdown in form. If an archer can eliminate form errors, then he or she should have a good performance. I am not saying they will win. Instead, 1 am saying they should be able to perform at the same level as they can do on the practice range. Isn’t that what you really want to accomplish? To eliminate the form errors, I maintain the archer should focus consciously on shoot ing the best form possible. If the conscious mind is engrossed in nothing but shooting perfect form, there will be no room for detrimental thinking to hamper the pro cess. In order for this mental approach to be successful, it has to be developed on the practice range. Become completely involved in the shooting process during practice as well as at the competition. Feel your muscles relax as you allow the pin to settle in on the mark. When the pin is floating in the desired location, execute the shot. Feel yourself pull the bow apart. Continuously direct the pressure in the bow arm straight toward the target. Since most breakdowns in form arc due to the lack of pressure, make sure you continue pulling the bow apart until the arrow is released. If the mind is totally engrossed in shooting perfect form, there will be no room for self doubt or other negative thinking to disrupt your consistent form. The subconscious mind processes many thoughts instantly. Let it control the aiming. Stare at the spot you want to hit and allow the pin to float on that area. Let the pin drift in, out, and around the spot. Do not try to guide or correct this move 364
ment to hold it on the mark. Instead, let it float and allow the subconscious mind to make the corrections. If the float area becomes too big, this is usually an indica tion that you have lost forward pressure. Either pull the bow apart with a little more pressure to stabilize the pin movement or let it down and start again. The emphasis on hard aiming is drastically over-rated. The perfect form is what drives the arrow into the mark. Let the subconscious do the aiming, trust your form, and shoot. Another part of a good mental pro gram is confidence and self-image. If you truly have the confidence that you are the best archer in your division, this is good. Most people look at the situation from the viewpoint that there are many good archers in their division. If this is the case, put your confidence in what you are good at doing and what you can control, which is execut ing a shot with the perfect form. By placing your total conscious focus on perfect shot execution, you will realize this is the main and only thing that you can control, and this is what allows you to shoot the tight groups. Treat every practice session as if it were a tournament. This will help you build stron ger concentration and focus skills, which will build your confidence for competition. The mind will develop a positive picture of your ability to execute perfect form. Note, I never emphasized putting the confidence on your ability to score. Score is the result of shooting excellent form; so the emphasis needs to be placed on your abilities and not the results of those abilities. The conscious mind, subconscious mind, and confidence all need to be de veloped and utilized so that your mental program can maximize your performance. I realize this is a different philosophy than most of you have been exposed to in archery. I am not saying it is the right way or the only way to shoot. I am saying this is the ph i losophy that my shooters use; and they have won over 300 national and world championships. It works! Ifwhatyouare doing is not successful, then perhaps iDte time to make a change. vj

Taking archery to the bush The North Burnett Sport and Recreation tour bounced off to a powerful start encouraging positive behavior in junior sporting environments. Children, parents, spectators, officials, coaches and volunteers all have the opportunity to make a positive difference, so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of sport in their commu nity. This tour is giving our inland communities an opportunity to learn about the True Sport lives here initiatives and to have a say about how sport is managed in their community. This tour also caters for our mature community members with Bob Dieckmann from 50 Plus fitness delivering the message to respite and other community health focused groups, as well as coordinating the entire tour. The tour was made possible through the department of Sport and Recreation Queensland with development officers from the

Over the seven days of the tour students from twenty one north Burnett Primary schools have participated in sports and activities designed to encourage and develop their natural abilities as well as introducing them to sports new to them like lifesaving and archery. In the evenings the members of the tour meet with local sporting bodies and interested citizens to discuss sport in their community. This is to assist them in accessing services through informal discussions and with the tour members who form a panel to answer questions regarding sporting matters. This also gives everyone an opportunity to learn more about Queensland Sport and Recreations new initiative called the True Sport Lives here program. The Queensland Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation in partnership with the Queensland sporting industry, has developed a kit of practical resources, edu cation and training materials to help local sporting organizations build a more sustainable sporting culture. This is a programme that I would recommend to all those interested in creating a safe and enjoyable environment for our youth to participate in sport no matter what country you live in the problems associated with managing sporting clubs is much the same. To access this program simply visit this web site www.sportrec.qld.gov.au and download the True Sport Lives Here document The tour kicked off in our home town Gin Gin just a few kilo metres inland from Bundaberg, for those not familiar with Australia this is about 400 kilo metres north of Brisbane in the state of Queensland. Students from the surrounding districts were bussed in to a central school in each district to join the activities and meet the sporting representatives who were presenting the activities. Each school sports oval’s was a hive of activities with Football, Cricket, Rugby League and Archery in full swing. Each group of students would spend about forty minutes with each sport before rotating to the next and then moving to the class rooms for Lawn Bowls and Surf Lifesaving. To the best of my knowledge this is a first for Archery in Queensland and probably Australia and judging by the response from teachers and students I am sure it won’t be the last. Heather and I were overwhelmed by the enthusiasms of the students with questions coming from all it was easy to see the welcome archery will receive as the archery in schools program roles out through Australia. Of the schools that already have an archery program in place the main need is for better quality equipment, and for the teachers to receive basic coaching lessons. They are doing their best with the equipment and knowledge they currently possess however as the teachers learn more about coaching and the stu dents start using equipment of a higher standard like the Genesis

From a two day shoot to a ten day marathon Our state field championships were held at the Wide Bay Archery grounds on the 13th and 14th of October; many of the worlds top field archers will know these ranges as they shot the 2006 World Field Archery Championships there last year. The ranges are not steep but if you take them lightly you are sure to drop points as they are technically demanding and command your

full attention. On courses like these you only need to misjudge the lay of the land by a degree or so to drop out of medal contention
as many will testify. The shoot was held over two days with 28 Field targets, 28 Hunter targets and 14 Animal targets. As usual the Wide Bay club facilities were outstanding with plenty of camping space, and meals of roast Venison and beef cooked to perfection by the club volunteers. For those wishing to be pampered the Hervey Bay region has many hotels and five star resorts within a short drive and all the facilities you would expect from a major holiday destination. The next shoot to be held on these ranges will be a challenge of mammoth proportions covering ten full days of shooting. This

Queensland IFAA Champ will take place during the Easter break 2008 the exact date is still to be announced. The ten days will comprise a full 5 day champion ship round of IFAA Field for the Australian IFAA Championships. Three Days for the Australian A.B.A. unmarked Paper round and two days for the Australian ABA 3D Classic. This series of shoots will be physically exhausting mentally taxing and a whole lot of fun. It doesn’t matter whether you only shoot two days of 3D or go for the whole ten days as 1 will be doing this is going to be a spectacular shoot. Don’t forget to tell your boss you need extra time off work to enjoy the many attractions this area has to offer from whale watching to canoeing and fishing or just lounging around on the beach. As many of my students in South East Asia will attest the local archery scene has been full of momentous changes over the last few weeks. With the inaugural Southeast Asian Junior FITA Championshipsand the move to Singapore’s new grounds, these events though momentous have been overshadowed by the latest news to come out of Asia. As many would know George Loh has been president of Archery Singapore for some time with an outstanding record of achievements aimed at bringing the archers of Singapore to the fore in world Archery. George announced his resignation from the position of President some weeks back and took the Asian archery fraternity by surprise, however this was to be just the first of many surprises George had in store for Asian and inter national archers. George’s latest bombshell was to announce a whole new Archery Association, The Field and Target Archery Singapore (F.A.T.A.SIN). This association will be fully affiliated with the IFAA and will be conducting the full range of national and international shoots sanctioned by the IFAA. F.A.T.A.SIN has been offered two locations to set out their ranges. The first of the two locations is at Bukit Timah in the centre of Singapore the second and probably the most promising for International events is Palau Ubin Island in the straights between Singapore and Malaysia. This Island would make an excellent location for the pro field tournaments as well as catering for local and international championships. With a mix of open field and closed canopy Jungle the best of shooters will be put to the test and when the day is over the Island even offers an air-conditioned resort to let you put your feet up and gather your strength for the next day of shooting in the jungle.

Moonan Flat 2007 -10 Years of 3D! by Andrew Sherman Hotel, is one that is deemed the most prestigious on the Shoot Calendar to make the cut, let alone win. This year, Adam West, one of the rookie archers in MBO, blitzed the field over Saturday’s rounds to take top spot with a hard earned score of293. Other qualifiers were Peter Fryer, Grant Buckeridge, Jock Thompson, Steve Musgrove, Mark Elliot, Barney Miller, Ron Cornish, Andrew Sherman and Geoff Chapman.

The Cessnock Archers ran the 10th Annual Moonan Flat Classic! That’s right ten years at the same great venue! A tournament that has many memories, traditions and good times. This makes it a ‘must’ on many an archers Shoot Calendar for the year. Upon registration on Friday night, competitors were presented with key chains and water bottles from the organizers as a thankyou for the support the archers have shown the club over the past decade. With 150+ entrants registered on Friday night and a clear starry sky above, the anticipation of a fantastic weekend of 3D Archery had a great vibe going through the shoot site. Saturday morning broke and the Archers started to commence the weekends shooting, on what would prove to be some of the most challenging 3D courses set out for 2007. To reduce conges tion over the Tournament, five ten target ranges were laid out ready this year. With the Archer’s picking any three courses they liked for their 30 Targets on Saturday and left with two courses to shoot for the remaining twenty scoring targets on Sunday. One tradition that is embedded in the history of the Moonan Flat Classic is ‘The Hili’. Over the years there has been at least one course set on this super steep, barren, rocky, unforgiving hillside that has caused many a headache and reduced a promising days score to a result that Archer’s would rather not speak of. This year two courses were set over the dreaded hillside, with shots that left you with ideas that the range masters had hearts of stone! Targets worthy of mention were; The forty six yard McKenzie Chamois, that was severely quartered towards the Shooter over an undulat ing rocky gully that stretched the whole way to the Target, not to mention the terrible footing position set on a side hill! Another target of extreme measure was the dreaded bedded McKenzie deer, set at 47 yards at an angle of 40 degrees up from the stake, with a howling cross wind to go with it! Targets set like these are just a small component of the fac tors that keep everyone attending the Moonan Flat Classic, year after year. Praise must be shown to the Course setter’s ; Mark Collins, Grant Elsley, Gerard Miles, Steve Musgrove and Jack Carney, for their efforts in getting the Tournament ranges 100% for this event. Another draw card for the Classic is ‘The Bridge’. Every 3DAAA tournament has a Top Ten Shootout on the Saturday af ternoon (10 highest scoring archers from the days rounds against each other in a knock out style competition). The Moonan Flat Classic Top Ten Shootout which is sponsored by The Victoria
Top qualifier Adam West taking aim at the hyena. As Top Qualifier, West had the benefit of choosing the tar get which would be shot first for the Shootout. He selected the McKenzie Hyena target, and shot high into the eight zone, open ing the door for the rest of the competitors to knock him out of the game. As more archers took their turn at the elusive African target, the scores remained in the eight and five zones until both Grant Buckeridge and Jock Thompson scored tens to step the game up. As the Shootout continued on, a ten was the still the score to beat until Andrew Sherman (author) in 9th position shot an eleven on the 37 yard Hyena to now rank 1st with the highest score of the target, leaving Geoff Chapman the 10th qualifier, from Cessnock, to make his shot to try and equal the score, which would take the competition to a 2nd target. As with many oth ers, Geoff overestimated the Hyena and scored a high eight, this leaving Sherman with the win. As is tradition with ‘The Bridge’ if you win, you’re in! Meaning that the winner has to get into the freezing cold water once they have been announced, and yes it was bitterly cold this year! To give something back to the Archers and show thanks for their support over the past decade, the Cessnock Archers hired a talented band from the local region named ‘Green Ginger’. The group played a range of songs from the past 25 years that had the outdoor dance floor full, and many people singing along in the crowd. It really provided an excellent atmosphere for the event, with many rounds of applause being given to the band for their flawless performance. As the Sunday morning sun reared it’s head, the final 20 tar gets were now ready to be challenged by 150+ archers, all vying for positions in their various classes. Either trying to maintain

As the presentations closed out the milestone weekend, a handful of archers were awarded with custom commemora tive belt buckles. This was to signify that they had competed in all ten tournaments that had been held at Moonan Flat. A huge raffle was run with tons of prizes going out all over the place, with some claiming quite a haul once it was over. With the Rugby League Grand Final to be televised a few hours after the Tournament finished, and Monday be ing a holiday, many stayed the night to watch their favorite team and top off the weekend.

With the final twenty targets com pleted for Sunday, some great battles had been fought and the lead juggled back and forth in the divisions of MBO, MBR and FBO. Adam West lost his major lead from Saturday in MBO which now brought the others through with Thompson 1st, Elliot 2nd and Sherman 3rd. Peter Fryer in MBR who had a commanding lead on Saturday had a rough first ten target round, letting Steve Musgrove catch up some points until Fryer hammered a 103 for his final round to take the win and relegate Musgrove to 2nd and Brett Pinkerton to 3rd. In FBO quite a tussle was going on between Merrilyn Sheather and Louise Claesson. After fifty targets had been shot for the weekend it was

Friday’s activities began bright and early as Factory Pro Staff shoot ers, writers and television personali ties were placed into groups of four to compete in a Pro-Am style 3d shoot. The competition was set up in ASA format where teams shot twenty targets at unmarked yardages with the top four teams advancing to a final shootoff. Tim Gillingham, Ryan Leonard, Camella Crites and Steve AlIbritain won the shoot and each rode away on an Arctic Cat 650 ATV. Second place went to Jeff Heeg, James McGovern, Bobby Eyler and Randy Siers as they took home Nikon Spotting Scopes. Third place win ners Jackie White, Frank Rus, Les Bressler and Kelly Ward received Lone WolfTree stands and climbing sticks. EVANSVILLE, IN SEPTEMBER 19, 2007-- The third annual Fred Bear Sportsman's Club Shoot for the Hungry archery fun-shoots, held at Bass Pro Shops® locations in Harrisburg, Nashville, Clarksville and Charlotte over four weekends this summer, have raised S10,216 or enough to process some 40,864 venison meals to feed local indi viduals and families in need. Over the course of three years, the event has raised $48,016 for 192,064 meals. People in the Archery Community LINDA BURCH CHOSEN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - WOMENHUNTERS. Sue Burch, foundcrand past Executive Director of Women Hunters, together with the WomenHuntcrs Board of Directors, an nounced the appointment of Linda Kistler Burch as the new Executive Director of WomenHunters, effective immediately. Sue Burch founded the WomenHunters organization in 2000. Linda Burch (no relation) was one of the original writers for WomenHunters and was instrumental. along with Sue Burch in helping obtain the non-profit status for the organization. Linda has been a significant contributing writer, serves on the ProStaff, has helped promote WomenHunters at the ATA show for a number of years. She has also been a Board member and has served as President since January 1.2007. Sue Burch's health problems prevent her from continuing at the current level with the many and varied duties she has performed as Executive Director. She will continue on as Director Advisor and Founder, as well as being inte gral to the continuation of the dynamics of
the organization and the web site. ProStaff Director Alyssa Haukoin will assume the role of Womenl lunter’s President. Alyssa has also been actively involved with the organization since its beginnings, attending ATA shows, serving as Pro Staff, writing, and previously serv ing on the Board as VP Communications. She will continue as ProStaff Director for the time being. “We are excited about helping Sue and excited about our plans for the future”, said Burch. “The Board of Directors and 1 have many new goals for the future as well as carrying on the goals and dreams of our founder, Sue Burch. U.S. Paralympics Archery World Championships Team to Attend Camp, Compete in National Championships in Colorado Springs August 2, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO Members of the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Archery World Championships Team arrived in Colorado Springs Wednesday for a training camp that will lead up to the National Championships, Aug. 7-11. All 10 members of the World Championships Team will compete at Nationals, which is being held in con junction with the 123rd USA Archery National Target Championships. Of the 10 athletes on the ros ter, seven are members of the U.S. Paralympics Archery National and Elite Teams - Joe Bailey (elite, Flushing, Ml), Eric Bennett (elite, Surprise, AZ), Lindsey Carmichael (elite, Lago Vista, TX), Jeff Fabry (elite, Tulare, Calif.), T.J. Pemberton (national, Moore, OK.), Kevin Stone (elite, Kodak, TN) and Russell Wolfe (national, Williamsburg, VA).
The 2007 1PC Archery World Championships are scheduled for Sept. 14-24 in Seoul, Korea.
