January 2001 we will be starting our 20th year of publication. 1 hope you have enjoyed reading about competition archery from around the world, as much as, 1 have enjoyed the relationships I made with the archers. Before coming to Tucson and starting the U.S. Archer with my husband. Bob, at that time, I worked at the Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, Michigan. Mr. Frank Scott was my supervisor and close friend. I am sorry to inform you of his passing away very recently. We send our love and condolences to Frank’s wife, Eli, and their family. Frank and Eli moved to Gainesville, Florida with the Bear Archery Company in the late 1970’s while 1 moved with Bob to Mahomet,
Illinois where he joined the staff at Precision Shooting Equipment Company. P.S.E. then moved on to Tucson. Our families were no longer close in miles but our love foreachother never changed. The following poem was sent to me by one of our writers and it tells about life in such an excellent way.
Reason, Season, or Lifetime? People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a
lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usual!) to meet a need you have expressed outwardly or inwardly.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emo
tionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and
they arc. They are there for the reason you need them to he.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an in convenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Some times they act up or out and force you to take a stand. W hat we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire ful
filled; their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been
answered and it is now time to move on.
When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is be
cause your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have nexcr done. They usually
give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional
foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person/
people (any way); and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

The Holiday season is upon us with summer camp a faded memory. We were planing to run a summer camp article in this addition of the US Archer & international Archer but opted for something else, saving those good old hot summer fun times for the cold months that lie ahead. Thinking you'll enjoy a summer camp story more curled up next to the fireplace with a steamy cup of hot chocolate in hand. It's the time to reflect back so let me ask you.. .what did you do productive this year? Did you promote archery and 1 don't mean by showing up at a shoot... gees, everybody does that! Did you really contribute? Maybe you helped a needy group or individual. Provided food to a local food drive. There are a lot of things a person can do. You can start a family tradition even if it's something like shoveling out your neighbor’s driveway on Christmas Day. Soon it will be 2001, what will you do to make a difference? One group of individuals has decided to give back to the sport they love. Rough Country Bow Hunters 3-D club from Phoenix, Arizona has elected to donate S1.00 from each entry fee collected from their numerous 3-D shoots to be held in 2001 to Archers who care. Over the course of a year that dollar could add up to a thousand. When I walked into the Whitctail Archery & Pro Shop on 1Z* Street, I was greeted by co-owner Tory Iverson, a Santa Claus size fellow who had just returned from an elk hunt in northern AZ. After being introduced, Troy asked if I was involved with Archers who care. (Knew I didn’t owe him any money...so I said yes) that’s when Tory told me of their plans to donate to Archers Who Care. For

Is any of it being given back to the sport? Maybe that spare change needs to go to the right to keep and bear arms or children's organization, a school or hospital. Hey.. buy or make some youth bows and start a program to teach children archery. Teach them how to build arrows. That is a great indoor activity when the snow is flying. If you don’t know how to build arrows contact a traditional archer or a bow shop such as Valley Traditional Archery in Whitewater, CO. They have the supplies, knowledge, books and VCR tapes, etc. It just takes a little initiative and the desire on your part to give back. Mother Nature takes over at that point and things kind of fall into place once you plant the seed. So give it a shot because 2001 will be here and gone before you know it. Here it is - “next issue" already. No sooner is the material readied for one issue than it is time for the next. 1 hope the readers enjoyed the coverage of IFAA World Field Archery Championship-2000 (WFAC) in the last issue. We had a lot of help with coverage and pictures and. appreciate that help. The results of the IFAA Committee’s voting for a new slate of officers for the period. 2001 - 2002. is in. The new Officers for the IFAA arc: President - Ken Rogers - USA Vice President - Chuck Crowell - USA Secretary - Loet Smit Republic of South Africa Treasurer - Ronald T. Rafferty - Australia Ron Rafferty will step into the Treasurer’s office on 1 January 2001. He fills the shoes of outgoing Treasurer Tim Stone, who did not stand for re-election this year. As you can see, the rest of the officers remain the same as before. 1 feel certain that we have a capable group of officers who will continue to do their best for the IFAA and its goals. WIAC-2001. Now it is time to move on to the next IFAA World Championship. That is the Indoor Archery Championship. At present, we have been scheduled for September of 2001, in Singapore. However, we have had no contact with the folks in Singapore for several months now. 1 have started putting out feelers for an alternate host - So. please do not rush out to buy tickets to Singapore as. that may not be our final destination. In fact, with time growing short, the WIAC for 2001 may have to be

Our first priority is to arrange the event in a Southern Hemisphere which will give us the longest lead time. W3DC-2001. The Inaugural IFAA World 3-D Championship isscheduled for 17-21 April 2001. This time span only includes the actual shooting days and. Closing Ceremonies, Awards and Dinner. There arc other days such as Registration Check-in, Bow Inspection, practice, etc. which will require your presence on those days as well. Our tournament hosts are the fine Field Archers of the Australian Bowhunters Association (ABA). They have already sprung into action and are hard at the task of getting ready for this event. The location of the 3-D Championship will be Orange, New South Wales, Australia. The Aussies, with their normal efficiency, have established a website: wwxv.uscrs.bigpond.com/rtrafif .which gives all the details of events taking place during this time. The shooting schedule and, schedules for associated events arc also laid out. In addition, links are provided to sites if interest I the Orange vicinity to aid in making accommodation reservations. All this information is also available by accessing the IFAA website at www.archery-ifaa.com and. selecting the "Tournaments” link. At "W3DC-2OOI” you will find a direct link to the W3DC website. Please note, there are some Australian National events being held immediately ahead of the IFAA event. Overseas archers have been invited to participate in these events in which. as 1 understand it. they may win all except the title of “ABA Champion". This offers a great opportunity for archers to "tuneup" before the W3DC. As a matter of interest, none of the ranges to be used for W3DC. will be used before that event, nor have they been used previous. By checking out the website’s program of events, you will be able to plan your time (and vacation) in Australia. WBHC-2001. The IFAA World Bowhunting Championship in Matoon, Illinois. USA, is on track for 3-8, June. 2001. The IFAA website offers a direct link to the registration page at NFAA. At this time, no direct secure means has been established for credit card payment on-line. However, the page offers a registration form and a means to use your credit card by mail or phone. This may have changed by the time your are reading this information The ranges to be utilized for WBHC-2001, have been all newly cut out and will not have been shot previous to the event. Immediately following the WBHC. the NFAA 3-D National tournament will be held on different ranges. Those overseas archers who arc already NFAA-USA members, arc permitted to shoot in this event as well. If any other shooting privilege is extended, it will be announced in a future issue of this magazine and. on the NFAA or IFAA websites. We hope you will plan to attend one or more of the IFAA events in the coming year. The schedule has become a little crowded with the moving of the indoor Championships to the odd numbered year and, with the advent of IFAA's entry into the 3-D Championship. Samantha Kline Samantha began shooting early in life. She received her first bow. a compound for her eighth birthday. She began to compete in State and National Tournaments when she was ten years old. This year at age fourteen she shot in the FBO and Women’s open at IBO and ASA shoots. Samantha was three times State Champion and National Triple Crown Champion in the Cub Division. Other interests of Samantha’s are swimming, dancing and playing basketball. Cara Fernandez IBO WORLD CHAMPION 1998 (Cub Division) IBO WORLD CHAMPION 2000 (Youth Female) I began shooting a bow when I was just three years old and I entered my first competition at the age of five. 1 have the unique distinction of being the first female ever to win the IBO World Championship (1998) in the Cub Division. As years pass. I find that my love for archcry and my interest in it. as a competitive sport, continues to grow. Birthdate: 11-02-85 Birthplace: Southfield, Michigan School: Fenton High School Grade: 9th Hobbies/Interests: 1 enjoy deer and turkey hunting, playing the flute, swimming, marching band, track, softball, music and dance.

Four World Records set in a day by Alison Bateman By John Dealing
Alison Bateman Two years ago Alison Bateman tried out shooting with a club recurve bow. After a short session the only comment she had was “boring" and she was not really interested. As the rest of the family had started shooting they decided she should give it another go. So after suggesting they could get her a compound bow in one of her favorite colors, she agreed to give it another go. An old Pearson of the right color started her going, although the fear of failure had her sitting out the first public appearance. Once she got over that hurdle she moved on in leaps and bounds with regular coaching. Her confidence grew along with her determination to be the best. When the old Pearson riser started cracking her family visited Archery Imports and John convinced her the best bow for her was the Browning Vanguard 2, as they are a forgiving bow and come in great colors (most important for a fashion conscious young lady). Alison was happy with this decision as two of New Zealand top woman compound shooters also shot Vanguard 2's. Alisons scores began rising fast with the addition of a Bernie’s Can’t Punch trigger and a Golden Key Premier launcher and later a Carbon Impact stabilizer. Girl’s things were no longer important as her Christmas wish list was nanowed down to archery equipment. Alison, consistently taking first place in her class, knew she could do better still. Her selection in November 1999 for the 288
New Zealand Junior Trans Tasman team gave her the focus and determination to reach the level she had only dreamed about. December 1999 the family attended a shoot only catering for adult lines. Alison and her ten-year-old brother had no problem shooting 70 meters with very acceptable results. Christmas came with a new spotting scope (had to be Purple). January 2000 the New Zealand Nationals gave her the opportunity to make herself noticed shooting 1354 on the Intermediate FITA (55m, 45m, 35m, 25m). February meant a birthday and a new Toxonic Pro Scries PS200 sight and a high mounted cable guard. In March her Dad managed to convince her to try Mum’s 26” ACC2L-04 instead of her aluminum X7s (which she loved dearly) even just for the Sunday afternoon club shoot. That afternoon she scored the lop score of the day. adults included. A year to the day after getting the Browning Vanguard she shot her tournament best intermediate FITA of 1368 although she had achieved a 1376 in a previous club shoot. After being part of the triumphant New Zealand junior team. beating the Australian team by an average of 64 points per archer. She decided that she would shoot the 70m FITA from now on. On the 30 April 2000, a week later was the next registered FITA tournament at the North Shore Archery club and with perfect conditions forecast she was out to make the most of it. which she did beyond her own expectations. Over the two-day event she achieved her dream of taking out a world record. Alison smashed four of the newly formed Cadet class records. With a total of 1325 and distance totals of 318 at 70tn. 335 at 60m, 318 at 50m. and 355 at 30m. not bad for a thirteen-year-old. Alison has achieved amazing success over the past two years as a result of the way she approaches everything in life. She is always determined to do things to the utmost perfection. This determination to achieve has in the past caused Alison major emotional stress trying to cope with the fear of failure. Now with her current success and personal achievement she has gained the confidence to tackle any hurdle that comes along in her life. Alison's ambitions for the future arc to attend the junior worlds in 2002, to compete in the larger Australian junior events, to be selected to represent New Zealand in a ladies team as soon as the opportunity arises, and to put her name on more world records. whether in the Junior or Ladies division. (1997.1999&2000). Every time I won or even if I didn’t win. I felt that I was special to them. I shot every NABH tournament since 1996 in Shelbyville, IL. And it was worth every mile. I would like to thank everyone involved with the North American Bowhunters, from the people who worked the Cabela’s bus. to those who cleaned up afterwards, they always treated me and the other archers
equally. I just want to say thanks NABH for all of those great memories. I think that archery is a sport that is for everyone, yet it is highly overlooked in the sporting industry. What other sport can a whole family participate in together? You can practice together and tell each other what they are doing right or wrong. You can travel with your whole family and meet friends that are in everyone’s age group. Even if you can’t travel far from home, there are many local archery clubs in most areas that can provide you with some of the fun that 1 am talking about. If more kids were involved in archery. I believe that there would be less drug and alcohol use and less violence. If kids have something like archery to focus on then they have less time for getting into trouble. I think that archery should be introduced in schools at a younger age and

American Bowhunters Shooter of the Year and the North American Bowhunters Championship was this year. Because of this great organization, I have been able to travel across die country making new friends and seeing my old friends. The people, Eric Banks and Chuck Borcher, from North American Bowhunters and all of the archcry clubs across the country, made it challenging and lots of fun. My first major tournament was with the NABH in 1996 in

Fort Worth—L.D. Molder, 84, retired owner of L.D. Molder Plastering Co., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at his home. Funeral: 2 PM. Monday at Worth Baptist Church. 4900 Campus Dr., Fort Worth. Burial: Laurel Land Memorial Park Visitation: 2 to 5 PM. Sunday. L.D. Molder was bom Feb 28, 1915, in Klondike, Texas. He served his country, family, community and Lord in many ways. During World War II, in the Pacific, as a master sergeant in the Army 240"’ engineers C. Bn., from 1943 to 1946. He was president of Burleson Public School Board several years. He formed L.D. Molder Plastering Co. of Fort Worth in the 1950s and it is still a well-known business in existence today. He was a Code Blue neighborhood patrol member from 1997 to the present. He was chairman of Worth Baptist Church official board for 35 years. He was the oldest active archer in Texas. His archcry skills earned him many hours of pleasure and countless medals, trophies and awards, the most recent being the national medal of merit, presented to him by his fellow members of the Texas Field Archery Association. This award is the first one given in the state of Texas. L.D. Molder leaves a legacy of strong Christian faith, personal integrity, strength of character, zest for life and most of all, love. Some of his interests included oil painting, karate, fishing, hunting. and archery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billy Lou Molder, in 1986, and a daughter Virginia Bedford, in 1995. Survivors: Wife of 12 years. Marguerite Molder of Fort Worth; daughter and son-in law, Cathey and Bud Roach of Tulsa, Okla.; brothers.Troy Molder of Fort Worth, Dan Moldcrof Austin. Ark., J.T. Molder of Jacksboro; sisters, Thelma Pemberton of Commerce, Lodcva Dennis and Imogene Hoover, both of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Stephanie Howie of Godley, Chris Roach of Tulsa, Okla. Alexis Mitchell, Blake Ralston, both of Burleson, and Katie Roach of Tulsa, Okla.; and great-grandson, Stratton Shaffstall of Godley.
Bob Rhode loved every part of archery - the sport, the industry, its
history, and the people involved. He was a great and very competitive archer who came into prominence in 1954 when he became the first
archer in history to win both the U.S. Target and National Field Championships in the same year. Bob went on to become the uncontcsted archer of the year. In 1955 he attended the World Archery championships
in Helsinki. Finland w here he finished with the silver medal, after losing
to the Swedish champion
In 1957 he was the National Field Archery
Association Free-Stylc champion, and in 1959 the International Field champion.
During the next ten years he was always one of the top ten archers in every competition he entered.
Bob first began competing with a
recurve, then took up shooting with a compound, and also competed in
flight shooting.
Bob received many awards, but among his most
cherished, were the N.F.A.A. Compton Medal of Honor and the NAA Thompson Medal of Honor. He was also one of the original inductees of the Archery Hall of Fame.
Bob's career in archcry began with the Ben Pearson Archery Co.
Later he worked with American Archcry. Bear Archcry, P.S.E., and Hoyt USA where he retired as their senior Vice President. Bob was one of the founders of the Professional Archers Association, and was a lifetime
member of the National Archcry Association and the National Field
archcry Association. He was also known as an experienced tournament director and officiated at the first indoor professional tournament held at
Cobo Hall in Detroit.
Bob became archcry's historian by taking on the task of gathering 150 years worth of historical information and photographs about the sport.
He compiled and published over six volumes on the history of
F1TA, the NAA, and the NFAA along with three volumes titled ''Archery
Champions." Without any doubt. Joe Johnston says it best. "Bob will be out there waiting for us, bow in one hand and the other stretched out to bring us home."

Margaret L Klann, 88, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on September 22,2000. Bom December 30,1911 to Elmer H and Frieda W (LaFrentz) Klann in Chicago, Illinois, she received her BA in Education from the University of Illinois in 1933 and her MA from Colorado State College of Education in 1944. She taught high school in Arizona and California for over 10 years and was a professor in the Physical Education Department at Arizona State University for 31 years, retiring in 1976. While at Arizona State, she was named the Collegiate Archery and Arizona Women’s Coach of the Year in 1975 and was named to the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Distinction in 1982. Her teams won 16 US Intercollegiate Archcry Championships and she coached 47 ASU Archery All-Americans. She was the originator and founding president of the College Division of the National Archery Association, received its Thompson Medal of Honor and served on its Board of Governors from 1972-1979. She is survived by cousins; Nonna, Tom and Jane Phillips and Larry and Lynda Fleischer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2000 at 10:30am at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 North Centennial Way in Mesa, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, Margaret requested that memorial donations be made to the National Archery Association, One Olympic Plaza, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.... Our sympathy to the families of those whose lifetimes have contibuted so much to the success and promotion of archery.

THE COMPOUND BOW AND THE OLYMPICS
No, there were no compound bows at the Olympic Games as yet. But, we do urge you to read the entire contents of this feature article, if you arc interested in the future and welfare of Olympic Archery and the compound bow. Meanwhile.. The spectacular Sydney 2000 Olympic Games are over leaving many fond memories of the opening/closing ceremonies vividly impressed upon the minds of spectators and participants alike. After several years of advance preparation, planning and construction, the Australian people fulfilled their promise to make the 2000 Sydney Olympics an event to be remembered and one to be revered. Apparently, the Australians did more than that their ace archer Simon Fairweather won the gold medal in the Men’s individual competition proving to the world that the Australians work hard at whatever they undertake and do. Congratulations. Australia and thank you for doing such a magnificent job at the Olympic Games and for hosting such an unforgettable event.

First of all, I would like to congratulate all the medal winners at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Special congratulations go to Vic Wundcrlc, who surprised the world with his tremendous performance while winning the silver medal at the games! Great Shooting. Vic! Congratulations also go to the United States Men's Archery Team for winning the bronze medal at this exciting event.
The Greatest Are Still the Greatest! Beyond a doubt, the stars of the Olympic show were the Korean women who. once again, walked away with the Women's Individual Gold won by Yun, Mi-Jin while Kim, Nam-Soon won individual women's silver medal. To top their performance off, Kim. Soo-Nyung won the individual women's bronze medal defeating Choe, Ok-Sil. The Korean women also won the three gold medals for the women's team event. Great shooting girls! Your shooting was superb. In the Men's individual competition, Fairweather won the gold edging out USA's Vic Wundcrlc who took second place and the silver medal. The bronze medal went to Wietse Van Allen of the Ncderlands who out-shot the great and very popular archer Magnus Pctersson of Sweden. In the team event, the Korean men emerged victorious winning the gold by beating the Italian team 255-247! Second place silver went to the Italian team and USA took the bronze. For the records, the Korean men's team shattered and reset the Men's team Olympic record elevating the score from 255 to 258 for the team round. The United States team also temporarily surpassed the world mark for the team event by posting a respectable 255 total during one of the team matches. Since the introduction of the team event at the Seoul Korea Olympic Games, the Korean women have won all of the individual gold medals, and also the team gold medals at all of the ensuing Olympic Games since 1988. Their successes must prove to the world that the Korean women are obviously the greatest archers in the world and whose shooting form is unsurpassed and totally exemplary for the rest of the world to emulate. On the distaff side, will the Korean men start to win the Men's Individual competitions to match the enviable record of wins accumulated by their women? Does their dominance mean that the Olympic Games are gradually becoming the "Korean Olympic Games?" For the sake of all Olympic hopefuls worldwide, we certainly hope not. 1 sincerely believe that the difference between Korean archers, as compared to other races and countries, is that they arc dedicated and extremely well disciplined people who believe that "winning is everything”. This to them means taking all of the gold medals at the games if they possibly can! We must also not overlook the
fact that the second most important factor that governs their great outstanding shooting is the rumor that many of their archers receive government financial backing along with great monetary rewards for winning. It’s no wonder they shoot so great! Isn't it also about lime to change Olympic Archcry so that there is less dominance of the games in archery and thus, giving everyone competing in the games a better chance to win? I definitely think so! Changes in Olympic Archery
Practically no one in archcry can deny the fact that the head to head OR format has elevated the sport of archcry to new dimensions since making its appearance at the '92 Barcelona games. The new format makes the sport of archery easier to follow and to understand for the benefit of the spectators. Without this very crucial and very necessary change, the archery competition would have disappeared from the Olympic Games if it had not been for the dedicated efforts of Jim Easton who devised and developed the exciting elimination match play format for the benefit of Olympic Archery. The acceptance of the OR format proves to the world that change is a natural occurring necessity that occurs for the benefit of each respective sport regardless of the nature and type of sporting event that we choose to take part in. Over the years, FITA Federation has approved and accepted many changes that have benefited the Olympic Games and the sport of archery. During the early Olympic Games, it was possible to compete in numerous archery events and thus, be able to win several Olympic medals. When archery was reintroduced to the Olympic Games in 1972, the rule makers decided to approve the use of the Double FITA Round as a means of determining the medal winners at the games. During 1988. in Seoul Korea, the Grand FITA Round was used in place of the lengthy and time consuming double FITA Round. Simultaneously, team competition was reintroduced to the Olympics giving participating archers another chance to medal and win notoriety and recognition. In the equipment side of this report, history tells us that the use of long bows and wooden arrows prevailed during the primary Olympic years including the games of 1900.1904.1908 and 1920. When archery returned to the Olympics during 1972. competitors toed the line with composite laminated recurve bows, aluminum arrows, bow sights and space-age stabilizers that made the modem bow appear to be a contraption from outer space - all being a sign

of the times and of the advancement and natural progression of the sport. During the late 60's and early 70's, the American inventor by the name of Holiess Allen invented a new type of bow that was destined to change the nature of the sport of archery like no other innovation in the history of archcry had ever done before. The ingenious and revolutionary compound bow makes use of the block and tackle concept that applies a combination of pulleys and cables to help reduce the holding weight of the bow at full draw. At the same time, the compound bow design contributes and produces increased arrow velocities that flattens arrow trajectory and thus, reduces the margin of error at longer distances. Combined with the re-introduction of release aid devices, magnifying lenses and peep sights, the accuracy factor is increased to new levels, thus enticing and encouraging countless former archers to return to the shooting lines and to take part in competitive archery once again. Since the introduction of the compound bow during the years 69/70, the popularity of the compound bow has sky rocketed and has gained widespread use by bowhunlers, target archers and field archers alike. As a result, bowhunting licenses and equipment sales have soared to new levels while tournament attendance has increased due to the popularity of the innovative marvel labeled the compound bow. In the beginning, the compound bow met with great opposition from leading finger shooters who desperately tried to keep the tournament winnings all to themselves. During the year 1971, a committee was formed in an attempt to ban the use of the compound bow and release aids. When the NFAA resisted the attempted ban by going to a membership vote regarding the proposed changes, the banning efforts failed. Meanwhile, the NAA followed FITA and AAC equipment rules that still stand, in part, to this very day. Since that time, archers from around the globe have been constantly asking and waiting for the acceptance of the compound bow and releases in the Olympic Games. So far, the ongoing discussions regarding those possibilities appear to be divided between recurve bow shooters and the governing body of archery called FITA. Fortunately for archery, there arc several progressively minded FITA representatives who favor and lobby for the acceptance of the compound bow in the Olympics due to many requests received from associate members throughout the world. Meanwhile and due to their untiring efforts, the compound bow has been accepted for use at World Target and at the World Games Field Archery competitions - but not at the Olympic Games. Following suit, several member associations throughout the world, including NAA. has allowed and recognizes the use of the compound bow and related equipment as legal equipment for use at their National tournaments and other competitions. For certain, the popularity of the compound bow can not be ignored or denied. Due to its widespread use and presence, the compound bow is obviously here to stay! It is proclaimed that the primary objectives of FITA are to promote and develop new archers throughout the world. What several FITA Council members may not realize, is that there arc many great benefits to be gained by allowing the use of the compound bow in the Olympic Games. Currently, there are approximately eight million compound bows throughout the world and hundreds of manufacturers who arc willing to join FITA as associate members when the compound bow is accepted in
Olympic competitions. 1 can assure you, that acceptance of the compound bow in Olympic Archcry will be the biggest shot in the arm for the sport of archcry that it has ever received and witnessed. If you arc a progressively minded archer and believe in perpetuating the growth of archcry. write to FITA Council members in your country or send to FITA at the address below telling them that you wish to see the allowance and acceptance of the compound bow for the Olympic Games. We in competitive archery experience many problems with shooting disorders and the major ones affect over 95% of shooters. They include punching the trigger, freezing, snapshooting, flinching and related forms oftarget panic. The major reason for this is because we have overlooked the primary elements that are at the core of archery itself. Competitive target archcry is not an interactive sport like baseball, basketball, and others. In those sports your brain must interact, as in ... run over here and throw the ball, run over there and catch the ball, go over there and bat the ball. The conscious mind is continuously interacting with the unlimited variables presented by the opposition or the competitors which makes up that particular sport. However, in competitive target archcry, your competition is the target. We don’t interact, (or SHOULD NOT anyway!) with the target because it is stationary and there is no one trying to block our shot...but us!
IT’S A DISCIPLINE
Because we have no other competition, this target becomes the object of our focus. Most of us don’t understand that archcry is a discipline and requires a program, (or shot sequence) that is subconsciously absorbed but consciously directed. These two separate areas of the brain both work together to accomplish the ultimate goal, which is hitting the center of the target. To do well at any discipline, the conscious mind must focus on the task (or target) at hand, but only after it starts and gives direction to the subconscious, which runs the program that contains the sequence to the discipline. In archery, we too often confuse the conscious mind with too many tasks. It is only possible for the conscious human mind to think of one thing at a time. You can either think about aiming at the target, or you can think about the instant or method of the release of the bow siring, whether it is with a mechanical release, or the fingers.
TARGET PANIC
Target panic takes place when the conscious mind loses trust and takes over the subconscious mind's function and tries to monitor, (and therefore control) the program that is normally run. This program is normally run without conscious thought by the subconscious and contains the information and method of release. But with target panic, at hill draw, the archer tries to consciously monitor and control two things at one time...sight on target (or target acquisition) and the exact millisecond of release, both of which are idealistically timed perfectly as to cause the release to happen when the sight is in the exact center of the target. (In our “sport" or any other sport, this is humanly impossible.) This lack of trust and over controlling of the conscious mind sets up a subconscious anticipation of the sight coming into the target and/or a fear of missing, which we call target panic, which has four basic symptoms...freezing, snapshooting, flinching, or punching the trigger. The only cure for these is to be able to relieve the conscious mind from any burden whatsoever of causing “let-go” to happen. This is done by removing the cause oftarget panic...a defective or non-existent shot sequence. Only after a corrected shot sequence has been absorbed subconsciously, can any existing symptoms such as punching, freezing, or snapshooting be deprogrammed with a number of shooting drills and/or devices. If the sequence is not reprogrammed completely and correctly, the symptoms will return. THE SECRET OF THE DISCIPLINE
An excellent archery shot happens when the archer is consciously immersed in aiming while his or her subconscious releases the string. In order for this to happen, there must be a formal physical and mental shot sequence, from stance THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

Archery is not a sport, it is a discipline. An essence of a discipline is a sequence. through follow-through and conclusion. This sequence is at first consciously thought of and then practiced, (usually on an empty bale at close range or with a bowsimulator like the one I developed), until the archer’s shot sequence is eventually subconsciously absorbed. Then it can be nm. with no conscious thought, through muscle memory, controlled by the subconscious mind. When testing this sequence on a target, it is critical to understand that as soon as the conscious mind starts this program, it must give up control and trust the subconscious mind to let this program run without conscious interference. The archer must then immediately focus intensely and completely on the target without losing trust and succumbing to the temptations to check on.
analyze, monitor, or control the let-go system that they have subconsciously programmed to run the same way each time. This happens the same way only because we don’t change it by consciously screwing around with it! The archer must trust the subconscious to run the program, which is the most difficult part of archery. Most of us are “control freaks”, "risk takers”, and/or “over analytical" and cannot trust ourselves or others easily. We must constantly analyze, improve on. modify and therefore change anything we place importance upon in an effort to control them and thereby making them perfect. Therefore, while the aiming process is happening, we must interrupt the aiming process to mentally switch gears to see how the finger is doing on the trigger. or how the fingers are coming off the string, etc. Because we now consciously think of the release, it will not happen the same way, as in a subconscious motor movement (such as walking, or driving a car, which we do without ever consciously thinking about it.) When the subconscious runs these programs, they all take place in exactly the same manner because the program is run over and over without trying to change or improve them. As I said before, this is the hardest part of archery to master. Archcry is a discipline. which requires us to do it, not necessarily the right way. but exactly the same way every time. The only way to accomplish that in any discipline is to do it subconsciously. Here’s the real secret to understanding this: Any repetition done subconsciously cannot be anticipated; therefore it will be done the same way over and over. Any repetition done consciously will always be anticipated and then analyzed. After we analyze it. we judge it to be good or bad. If we didn’t hit the middle, we judge it to be bad. We are doomed to shoot until we miss and then change something. If we do that, how can we ever do it the same way time after lime? Vicious circle, isn’t it?

METHODS OF SURPRISE The following are several methods that wc use in archcry in order to make sure that the conscious mind is totally plugged up to aiming, while the shot is happening subconsciously and takes the conscious mind by surprise, which is the only way to achieve greatness or even competitiveness in upper level tournament archcry. • A clicker attached to the bow for finger shooters, subconsciously triggers the "let go". Therefore, wc must be aiming when the clicker goes off. It will teach you to continuously aim and pull, until the subconscious is signaled to "let go" by the “click.” • Any back tension triggerless release like the Stanislawski or Zenith, which causes us to rotate the handle with back tension subconsciously, while the mind (not knowing or anticipating when the release will happen,) consciously aims until the release fires. • The "Bernie’s CANT PUNCH™ by Scott" is an index finger wrist strap caliper release that has two triggers. One trigger keeps the archer from punching the trigger, while the other trigger is set off using back muscles, thereby causing the archer to aim until the release happens.
Whatever method you choose, any one of these, or others, there doesn't seem to be any other methods that arc this successful at approaching and mastering this discipline. Contracting the rhomboids (back muscles between the shoulder blades on the draw arm side.) causing the elbow to move rearward, causes all the above to subconsciously set off the release. Therefore, the archer must consciously aim until the release happens subconsciously and takes the conscious mind by surprise. THE LESSON The bottom line to successful archcry is this: Archery is a discipline. A correct shot sequence should be practiced until it is completely absorbed to the subconscious level, as natural as driving a car. The only thing the conscious mind then has to do is AIM... until the shot goes off subconsciously. To keep these two functions on separate planes is the only way to do two things at once. These are among the most important things wc teach in the NFAA Shooter's School along with the techniques to accomplish them with the methods mentioned above, along with many others. If wc can get this information to the majority of the shooters and change how people arc taught to shoot in the first place, we may eliminate target panic in our lifetime!

From The Senior Corner By Joe Bauernfeind Hi fellow seniors. Here it is almost November and hunting season once again is upon us. I wish all of you archers who go out there, the best of luck on your upcoming hunts. Do me a favor though and Joe Bauernfeind take it easy on the senior critters out there. They've managed to spend their working years staying out of your sights and now, being a little hard of hearing and slower a foot they're only hoping to make it to critter heaven in one piece. As I've mentioned before, this is a slow time of the year for me. so 1 get to shoot my bow a little more. Unfortunately it’s only in practice, since all the competition is over. That leads to a lack of results for me to write about though, so the column may be a little shorter than my usual rambling. I've been really easy on you this year when it comes to nagging about going to your state Senior Games and I hope my lack of effort hasn't caused you to forget about qualifying for Baton Rouge next summer. As far as I know, only one state games have yet to be completed and that as usual is Florida. Their games begin on the 2nd of December and that will be your last chance for the 2001 National Games. As 1 mentioned in a previous column, I had to miss the New York State games due to a conflict with the NFAA Mid Atlantic Field shoot. As it turned out though, things worked out pretty well for me. The Garden State Games in New Jersey were delayed from their original scheduled date, to September. This worked out really well for me. I got to extend my shooting season a little longer and also got to visit with some of my senior pals from Jersey. The only down sides to the trip were the traffic and the fact that I had to give my arch rival Harry (don't call me Mutt) Miller one more shot at beating me outdoors. And beat me he did in very convincing fashion. I guess he who barks last, barks best. I'll have to take over the doghouse this winter and give the nice warm couch to Harry. Congratulations big dog, but watch out next year when the action will resume. When I finished last issue's column, 1 was in Atlanta waiting for the ASA Classic to start. As with most of the ASA and IBO major shoots, it was worth waiting for. The venue at Wolf Creek which I thought had been used for the Olympic archcry competition was actually used for the various firearms shooting events. It is still actively used by colleges and other groups for shooting competition and also rented out to other groups such as the ASA for various other sports. There were outdoor, covered shooting lanes for practice, an octagonal shaped indoor facility which is used for air rifle and pistol shooting but lent itself to a very compact, easy to browse, vendor area and a lighted trap and skcct area which made an ideal shoot-off location, with a grandstand area for watching the shoot-offs which ran till well after dark. Once again, a large turnout of archers, both youngsters and seniors turned out for a first class weekend of archery fun. My last venture on the road was to the Nihon Classic held at Ski Wingham in upstate New York. The overall turnout was a little disappointing, with about 200 archers coming out to shoot the 3D and 900 rounds, but it did attract some well known archers from both the 3D and spot shooting worlds. Jim Depart, a winner of many of the major indoor and outdoor spot shoots, wound up edging 3D Pro Eric Griggs by a single point in the 900 rounds to
take home the S1000 prize. Again, the shoot venue was very nice, with the 3D archers being taken to the top of the mountain on the chairlift and shooting their way through 40 targets each day. coming down the slopes. The 80 target total may have been a few too many for a two-day event, but things like that are part of a learning experience you have to go through when trying to establish a major event. AH in all. Pete Lucas of Pinwheel Archcry and the staff did a fine job for the first time out. Watch for it to return next year with more archers and more vendors as Pete continues to try to build it into the only major shoot in the upper Northeastern area. He needs you to turn out to make that happen. One last note of interest before I wrap it up for this issue. I had an interesting call from an old friend. Hank Megee. who attended this years IFAA Worlds in the Republic of South Africa. Hank won the unlimited pro division shooting one of my releases and was nice enough to call and let me know. He also had some great stories to tell about some mixed up airline reservations, lost luggage and tough shooting conditions which I'm sure were not funny at the time but made for a memorable trip, long to be remembered and told to others. What actually is a winner’s perception? What separates the winners from losers? Can winners be MADE, or are they just bom that way. Are they any stronger, faster, smarter, that the person who usually finishes second, third or even last. In the Kentucky Derby one year the difference between the winning horse and the one that came in second, was 2 tenths of a second. On the photo finish it was about the length of a neck. The winning jockey made SI 22,000...the jockey that came in second made SI6.000. That's a big difference in compensation when you think about the small amount of
time that separated the winner from the loser. In trapshooting a person that breaks 100 out of 100 targets can walk away with prize money in the neighborhood of $2,000 to $3,000. BUT. if you miss just one bird out of that 100 targets, the prize money drops to about SI 50 to S200. Most of the time the line that separates the winner from the loser is extremely fine and almost undesirable, and the only way you can tell is from the score at the end. Archery is no different. One or two arrows can make the difference between 1“ and 2nd place. So, why do the same people seem to be standing in the winner’s circle at the end of most competitions? The have a winner's perception. They can SEE themselves winning, they have the winner’s attitude. But, how do you GET that winner’s perception, that winning attitude until you start winning regularly, and how do you start winning until you get the attitude.

You have to start with the attitude first. Someone said “ Everybody loses once in a while, it’s just that a winner doesn’t ACT like it." Doesn’t that sum up the great and gracious winners you’ve observed in sports, be they on a professional field. talking on the media, or just in your own club competition. If you didn't know the score and you were just a casual bystander you’d actually think that THEY had been the one to come out on top, just by the way they were congratulating the other competitors, and shaking their hands, smiling, showing a very positive attitude. This is a winner's perception even in loosing, which makes them a winner no matter what happens. Here is a truth of the mind. Your perception of the event at hand, will control the outcome of similar future event. If you know you did your best, even though it was not enough to get you in to the top position or top 3 or top whatever.. .you have a right to be proud. If however you did not take the tournament seriously, went out and partied, didn’t sleep, and got up an hour before the shoot, with the room spinning....as they say in New York...Fa Get About It!! Your have just added to your negative personal history that says you did not take responsibility for your actions to make the desired result come about...you shooting your best. Your perception of how you DID controls how you WILL do in the future. WHEN YOU’RE LOSING In almost any champion's history of winning trophies, they will tell you that the most meaningful trophy on their shelf is the one that they almost lost. In every competition when there are equal competitors, you will be behind at some time in the competition. The difference between the winner and loser, is that the winner uses losing as his or her wakeup call! Winners perceive themselves as being temporarily behind, not as losing. In every loss there is a victory, and that is how winners view not coming in first. The victory is gaining the knowledge of what NOT to do the next time, or how to change something, in either the equipment or form or attitude to bring about a victory the next time. Winners take the attitude “If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’re going to get what you’ve always got!” So...use losing as a method of telling you what to correct, and don’t allow your emotion to blind you to the precious THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

OVER COMPENSATION Over compensation is usually the result of RE-acting instead ofjust...acting. The pendulum swings both ways, and wouldn’t it be nice if we knew just how far in advance to compensate for our mistakes WITHOUT having to make those mistakes in the first place, to find out how NOT to make those mistakes in the future. Something I sure you as a parent have been trying to sell to your kids for con of time. A very learned friend of mine use to say “Oh that I may overcompensated less", and that just about sums it up. That is what any competitive sport is about, NOT over compensating. Emotion is the chief destroyer of correct compensation. When we become emotional while shooting, our evaluation of the situation is seriously distorted and we may greatly ovcrcompcnsate making a worse mistake trying to correct the first one. A winner's perception is an unemotional detached view of his or her mistakes and it allows them to remain in control at all times preventing over compensation, and “Over trying", and over-concentration, and all the

“Overs” you can think of. The question is, how do you NOT get emotionally involved with your mistakes, and remain calm in the face of adversity. One trick you can do, is to breathe deeply, more deeply that you ever have. Breath in slowly and exhale slowly allowing all the tension and anxiety to exit your body and mind with each breath. Picture yourself and your energy as a glassy still lake, quiet and pristine, yet deep and powerful. This will bring you back to the real world, and gives you a “This is not so bad" attitude and instantly your scores will improve. Everyone allows themselves to be controlled by their emotions and directly by their past performance. You shoot good, you THINK you will continue to shoot good, and the opposite is true. The bottom line is how MUCH do you allow yourself to be controlled by your past performance when it is not what you want it to be. An old Chinese sage one said, "There is no wrong or right.. .only your perception of it". How you perceive the event or in this case your mistakes can ultimately make you a winner or cause you to be a loser. Even when it seems like there is no chance you can loose, somehow you find a way to "Snatch defeat from the jaws of victory", just because of

be judged.
one bad arrow or one bad end. If that sounds like you, then you need to R... E... L... A... X ...breathe, and get back your winner’s perception, and SEE yourself winning. That’s what all the winners do, and it’s easier than you think. You’ve got the ability, you’ve got the strength, and concentration, now just use it without allowing your emotion to side track you into second place...and Good Shooting!

How To Sight Accurately By Ken Johnson, Minnesota State 3-D Champion Have you ever felt that you have reached your peak as an archer. Your scores seem to stay the same. You sighted in you equipment pcrpcclly yesterday, but today it is off. When sighting on a
target, do your arrows group just off center. You’ve cxperenccd it. Your shooting outdoors, a 3D, a 900 round, or field round. You make what feels like a perfect shot. The arrow stricks out of the bulls eye. The second arrow strikes the same. You adjust the sight two or three clicks. And your in. On the next target your first arrow strikes just the oppisite. The second arrow strikes the same. You adjust your sight back to where you started. By how you will be questioning your form and your equipment. Your losing points and confidence. You have spent your extra time on practice and your extra cash on equipment, but you are still shooting the same. Most archers shoot below their skill level because they do not understand how their peep sight works. They assume that the hole in a peep sight is what they sight with. It isn't. You accually sight with the diffracted light that surrounds the inside of your peep hole. Il is diffracted light that limits you skills as an archer. Let me help you understand how diffraction works.
Light diffraction is a natural phenomenon that bends light. These three illustrations show what happens when your peep diffracts light. Fig. (a) shows how light passing left to right bends as it passes the edge of an object. (Note direction of the arrows.) This bending of light is called diffraction. You can easily sec di ITraction by holding a piece of paper Ken Johnson near your eye and looking at its edge. Notice the fussiness along the edge. This fussiness is caused by the edge of the paper bends the light away from your eye. Fig. (b) shows light as it passes through a large hole, (a typical peep). Like Fig. (a) the light near the edge of the hole bends toward the edge. The light in the center passes through. To sec through the hole, space must be provided for diffraction. This is the reason for the giant peep holes. Also. notice you never sec the actual peep hole. You always see a hole created by diffraction. Diffraction determines the size and shape of the your peep
hole. Fig. (c) shows what happens when not enough space is provided for the diffraction. The peep hole closes. Looking through a peep hole in bright light the hole will appear large. In dim light the hole will appear much smaller. Why? Because light intensity alters the effects of diffraction. In bright light, enough light passes through the diffraction for you to sec. The hole appears large. When light is dim, less light will pass through the diffraction. The hole appears small or even closed Remember, you are looking through a hole
surrounded by diffraction Because light intensity has a strong effect on diffraction, you often misalign your sights. Outdoors, where light intensity varies, the size and shape of the peep hole will vary. When light is more intense on the right side of your peep hole, the effects of diffraction will be less on the right, the center of the peep moves to the right. You unknowingly misalign our sights and make a poor shot. Experiments have shown diffraction can reduce your accuracy by 20% or more. When light is dim. why do many archers miss targets that in brighter light they would hit with case? Try this simple test. Look al a small object a short distance away. Point one finger at the object. With the your other hand, use the tip of one of your fingers to block lhe vision of first one eye. then the other eye. Note your line of sight will shift when you block your dominant eye. Many archer shoot with both eyes open, using their dominant eye to aim. When light is dim. diffraction will act as your finger tip. causing your eyes to switch dominance. You will aim with the less dominant eye and miss. A typical peep has three major shortcomings. First lhe peep hole must be extra large to provide space for diffraction. Second, the size and shape of the peep hole changes as the light intensity changes. Third, in dim light the typical peep can cause your eyes to switch dominance. The Nite Hawk Peep is the only peep that eliminates diffraction from its peep hole Being frecofdiffraction. It’s peep hole need not be oversized. Il's peep hole will be the same size and shape no matter what the light intensity. It cannot cause your eyes to shift dominance. It is the most accurate peep ever made. 1 low docs the Nile Hawk Peep work? It takes advantage of two characteristics of diffraction. One. light it must pass an edge in order to diffract. Two. light always diffracts perpendicular to the edge causing the diffraction. The illustration to the right shows how these characteristics arc used. Note the intersecting slots create a square hole that has no edge, A. The diffraction which occurs in the slots. darken the slots but not lhe square hole. B. You see clearly through the square hole because it is free of diffraction.

Florida Business Endowed Grant To Benefit U.S. Olympic Hopefuls October 26, 2000 COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The United States Olympic Committee has announced the creation of the first endowed athlete grant, made possible through a gill of SI00.000 from a group of Florida businesses led by SunTrust Banks Florida. The endowment program is a new direction in the way the USOC supports its athletes, and these particular funds will be used to help support Olympic-caliber athletes from the Southeastern United States. "We are extremely proud of the success of our Olympians from the state of Florida and throughout this part of the country." said George Koehn. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SunTrust Banks Florida. "Through this endowment. we will help ensure that America's elite athletes have the opportunity to compete
at the highest level. It is these athletes who serve as role models for our nation's youth and inspire the entire country at large." Named endowed funds have been a traditional and substantial source of funding for educational scholarship programs. The income from this first USOC endowed fund will be used for athlete support. The USOC’s goal is to build an endowment that eventually will supply a large percentage of the total funding provided for athletes. The USOC. in coordination with the various National Governing Bodies of sport, offers a variety of services and support to Olympians and elite athletes. During the 1997-2000 quadriennium, the USOC provided in excess of S25 million in direct financial assistance to athletes. A total of 457 of the 602 members (76 percent) of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team received athlete support during the four years leading up to the Games. "We are grateful to SunTrust and the other Florida businesses for creating this

Following an initiative from the Coaches Committee, FITA is proud to release a new service: The WEEKLY TRAINING TIPS. Every week from October 30,2000, until July 1,2001, some training suggestions will be provided at : http://www.archery.org/ fita_committees/training_plan/part 1 .html. The first set of Training Tips and some introduction documents arc already available at this URL address. Anyone can use these tips or suggestions. Nevertheless they arc targeting to assist the coaches who have no access to any upgrading system, and to the archers who have no access to any coaching assistance. They are suggestions only and certainly do not make the best archcry training program. Furthermore the training tips are not individualized; it is up to the users to adapt them to their needs (or the needs of their athletes if .they are a coaches), availability, current level and shape, accessible facilities, objectives,... These Training Tips are supposed to help the archers who want to compete at the international level. This is why they required a fair amount of practice hours per
week.Most of the suggested exercises are described by writing, hence despite their detailed description they could be misunderstood and badly implemented. FITA declines any responsibility of the consequence, accident, injury, material damages,... that could occur from to their use. We apologize for providing these Training Tips in English only, but we have not the resources yet to release them in both FITA languages. AMO BOARD ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT/CEO
GAINESVILLE, FL—During the AMO summer Board meeting held in Washington, D.C. on June 27, the AMO Board of Directors unanimously selected Jay McAninch as the new President/CEO of the organization replacing Dick Lattimer, who is retiring after almost 10 years in the position. McAninch comes to AMO after spending the past two years as the 310
Executive Director for the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. He has extensive background and experience in a wide array of conservation, hunting, ecological, wildlife research and management issues. He has worked extensively in the field with sporting goods retailers and wholesalers, rural and urban homeowners, farmers, foresters, Native Americans, hunters, activists and many others. He has also
worked intensively with federal, state, and county wildlife professionals, local and state legislators, Members of Congress, senior staff and board members of major corporations and conservation organizations. Prior to joining the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation McAninch was a wildlife research biologist with the Minnesota Department of Wildlife Resources. Prior to that he worked as a wildlife ecologist at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York. McAninch earned his bachelors Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Iowa State University in 1974, his Masters in Wildlife Ecology and Management from Ohio State University in 1976 and took additional postgraduate work at the State University of New York at Syracuse. According to AMO Chairman, Peter J. Dart, “Jay has great passion for archery and bowhunting. He has been contributing to our industry directly and indirectly for a number of years and obviously brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. The AMO Board is very pleased to welcome Jay to the organization.” Retiring AMO President/CEO, Dick Lattimer, said “Jay and 1 have worked very closely for the past 10 years on a variety of projects and challenges and I have always been impressed with his forthrightness and attention to detail. COMPOUND GENTLEMEN 2nd - Jorge Jimenez ELS 1st - Frank Pearson USA 3rd - Alex Rivas ELS The Xth Costa Rica Cup took on a bit of a different flavor from the past indoor event held in November 1999. This event was a registered star FfTA held at the beautiful Los Delfines golf Resort in Playa Tambor along the Pacific side of Costa Rica. This is approximately lOOmileswest of San Jose among the lush green forest, tropical birds and the beauty of nature. Approximately 30 archers from Croatia, Costa Rica, El Salvador and the United States attended. Everyone flew into San Jose were they were met by the transfer company and whisked off to the Hotel Palacio for the evening and in preparation for Mondays departure via motor coach to the resort. There were approximately 50 in our group. After a scenic 4 hour bus ride and an hour ride on a ferry across Nicoya Bay. we arrived at the resort. Our hosts Juan/ Roxanna Wedel and our tour specialists Eric Companion! & William Fletcher greeted us. Eric and William represent Costa Rica Travel Site and were

responsible for putting this package together. I understand they are also the newest members of the Costa Rican Archery Association. Everyone got checked in & transported to our appropriate 2 bedroom villas to settle in for a week of
fun & relaxation. Some of the group headed out for some practice while others opted for a round of golf on the beautiful 9 hole course minus one hole, due to the tournament set up on the 1st fairway. A more breathtaking setting could not have been chosen. A leisure stroll across the shooting field by a large iguana was the highlight of the first afternoon. The beast took a long hard look

Of all times, me without my camera. Official practice began on Tuesday. Before getting into a serious tournament mode, Stewart Bowman, Gil Bowman and Stanley Hipps headed out to do some fishing. They had a successful trip snagging several black tuna and some mahi mahi. The fish were taken to the Playa Tambor resort just a short distance from the Los Dclfines. where the chef graciously prepared them for a tasteful treat enjoyed by all for dinner that evening. Thanks guys - ya done good. Beautiful canopies lined the field to protect the shooters from sun or inevitable rain. We had a couple of light showers.which had no effect on the tournament. The Los Delfines staff also rolled in a refreshment stand, so water, soft
drinks and peanuts were within easy reach. A nice scoreboard was prepared with names already in place. During the FITA Roxanna Wedel. Linda Marten and Gil Bowman manned this. On Wednesday the official whistle of Lionel Caldwell of the United States and Cristobal Merles of ElSalvador started the tournament. A beautiful day had dawned and we were on the way. As is typical, a light mist began just about the time scoring started, but lasted only a few minutes and felt pretty good on a hot/humid day. Al the conclusion of 90/70 meters a New World record was established. Becky Pearson took advantage of the ideal weather and fired a 347 at 70 meters, putting down the previous record of 344 established in 1999 by Lcne Ahrenfeldt of Denmark. On the gentlemen's side of the field Frank Pearson and Stewart Bowman took the lead with 327’s respectively. It appeared the Pearsons

were there to make this a family affair and were off to a good start. On the Olympic bow side of the field veteran Ed Eliason took a strong lead firing a 280. His closest contenders were Ricardo Mcrlos of ElSalvador and Lauren DcLange of Costa Rica with 267. After a short break, 70/60 was under way where the contenders enjoy ideal weather conditions. In the gentlemen compound Jorge Jimenez of ElSalavador. the 1999 Costa Rica Cup champion led 70m with a 345/669. Following close behind was Frank Pearson with 342 and tying with Jorge at 669 for the round. On the ladies side Becky finished with a 350/ 697. On the Olympic side of the board. Eliason opened up the gap with 320/600 followed by DeLange with a 29I/558. With day one completed by about 1:00pm everyone retired to the buffet line. All meals were served buffet style with a splendid assortment of delicious breads, fresh fruit, salads, entrees and desserts that would make the waistline stretch to the limit. At this point, most of us took time for a little Central American siesta, while the braver played a round of golf or took a stroll down to the beach to unwind for the day. Day 2 opens under partly overcast skies, but it was still warm and humid. The 50/30 distances and the team round were to be completed. At the finish of 50M Frank Pearson led 50M with a 346/1015 while Jorge Jimenez was still making a run for it with a 340/1009. In 3rd place Stewart Bowman shot a 344/1004. On the ladies compound side, Becky opened the lead with a 343/ 1040 while Patricia came in with 200/700. Still on the Olympic Bow side Ed Eliason fired a 318/918 to open his lead while Merlos had 287/842 and only one point behind was Lauren Delangc with 283/ 841. A real battle began brewing for 2nd & 3rd place. Stay tuned to see what’s in store for the final distance. Again after a brief break, the final distance of the FITA was under way. Becky finished 30m with a 354/1394 total to establish a FITA total world record. The 1394 score bettered the previous record of 1387 held by USA’s Sally Wunderle established at the NAA National Championship in 1999. Stewart captured the high score for 30 meters, but to little too late. The Olympic bow division determined Ed Eliason the champion with 341/1259. Second place went to Ricardo Merles 326/1168 and only one point behind and third to Lauren DeLange 326/1167. The USA team comprised of Becky & Frank Pearson & Stewart Bowman capturing the gold 250 over El Salvador's Jorge Jimenez, Alex Rivas and Carlos Vides 244. Third went to Costa Rica with 235 comprised of Juan Wedel. Roy Sanchez & Joerg Pfreiffcr. The excitement of the event began as the elimination round concluded the tournament. On the compound men's side finds the event starting with the 1/8 elimination. Frank Pearson fires a 175 against opponent Stanley Hipps 157 while Stewart Bowman records 174 against Valverde of CR 153 and 3rd highest in the 1/ 8 finals was Alex Rivas of ElSalvador with a 169 against Oscar Protti of Costa Rica 159. In the quarterfinals Stewart Bowman of USA and Jorge Jimenez of El Slavador recorded 1 I4's against Hans Markovic of Croatia 109 and Rob Asay of the USA 107 respectively. Heading into the semi finals Frank Peason of USA scored with a 113 against Alex Rivas ELS 112 to proceed to the medal match. Jorge Jimenez ELS shot al 16 and ousted Stewart Bowman USA with 115. In the bronze medal match Alex Rivas shot a 113 against Stewart
Bowman's 111 while Rivas of El Salvador took the bronze medal. In the gold medal round Jorge Jimenez was matched with Frank Pearson. Both fired a 112 for a tie. In a sudden death shoot off Jorge captured the gold medal by outscoring Frank 10-9. In the Compound ladies arena Becky Pearson vied with Patricia Herrera. Becky was on a winning mission this trip and fired a 112 against Patricia's 66. On the Olympic bow side the men start with the quarterfinals. Ed Eliason USA shot a 105 against Luis Noguera 79 of CRC; Ricardo Merlos ELS recorded a 101 against Sergio Azofeifa's 97 of CRC and Marco Brcncs CRC 97 against fellow competitor Jose Rivera CRC 95 as they headed into the semi finals Semi finals in the Olympic bow division brought DcLange's CRC 102 against Ricardo Merlos ELS with a 90, and El Eliason USA 99 against Marco Brenes CRC with 96. This put Brcnes against Merlos for the Bronze and Eliason against DeLange for the gold medal match. ElSalavdor was hungry for medals at this event and in the Olympic bow division Merlos captured the bronze scoring 96 against Brcnes 89. The Olympic bow division found Eliason winning his 9th Costa Rica cup by scoring a 109 against DeLange 93. forcing a sudden death shoot off. After the 1 st arrow they were still tied with9's, the second arrow still tied with 10's. This meant separating the men front the boys by shooting 1 arrow closest to the center. Yea, you guessed it - Becky put the heat on Jorge and won the prize pot consisting of S70. They both scored 10's with Becky's arrow being just above the X and closest to the center. Way to go Becky! In celebration husband Frank and Juan Wedel carried Becky back to the shooting line and fortunately didn't drop her. To promote archery and introduce new archers to tournaments, an introductory round at 30 meters was offered. Three young upcoming archers took advantage of this to find out what tournament archery is about and take part in the festivities. Congratulation guys, hope to see you at more tournaments. Everyone retired to his or her villas for a little rest and a final trip to the beach. Later we gathered at Playa Tamor for our final dinner together and to say good bye to all the wonderful people there. Saturday morning we boarded the motor coach returning to San Jose for the evening. Everyone headed for home on Sunday. A wonderful time was had by all. If your plans ever find you heading to Costa Rica, we recommend you give the Costa Rica Travel Site a call and let them assist you with plans, tours, etc. They did a fine job for us and stayed at the resort the whole time we were there to assist with all our needs, from travel to helping at the tournament. Mack will oversee the day-to-day operation of the 6,000-member NAA, the national governing body for the sport of archcry. Prior to his appointment with the NAA, Mack served as vice president for human resource initiatives for the Chicago-based GrenzebachGlier& Associates. Before that, he spent 10 years as director of human resources for the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs. Mack will begin his duties at the NAA on November 20. ME, JAKE, AND THE RAINMAKERS OR THE MOSTLY TRUE SAGA OR MY FIRST BIG ARCHERY TOURNAMENT Dear Diary: As I told you on yesterday, its been raining a lot during the last couple of days. Seems as if we’ve gotten about seven inches of rain in the last 48 hours. That’s more than we’ve gotten in the last six months. That's a lot of rain and I. for one, have about had it with all this precipitation. Especially after today’s experience... Don't get me wrong, I sometimes like dark, dank, rainy days. They are great for fishing, having sex, getting out of yardwork or for staying inside and drinking hot toddies. Of course, rainy days are not necessarily good for archers. (If you don’t believe me, just ask Gcena Davis. But I
digress... To be honest, we’ve needed some rain. It’s hardly rained a drop al) summer. All of those phony TV weather people are constantly reminding anyone who’ll listen that there is an annual rainfall deficit of about 10 fathoms in the state. There are also severe restrictions on the use of water. For example in one of the counties around here, theyonly let you water your lawn on the fifth Monday in February’ or on the eve of Haley’s Comet—which ever comes first. There has been such a severe lack of rain that until the last couple of days, that I’ve been expecting that every kind of

to host, was cancelled because of horrendous rain and lightning up in Virginia. Now this------ the second weather related outrage of the week: I arose this morning at around 7:00 am. I pecked out the window. No rain. The incessant wet weather of the past four days had ceased. I turned on the cable TV and heard the weather guy say that more rain would likely hold off until late in the afternoon. Great! It looked like we could squeeze in the Georgia Archery Associations Target Championships. (As you know diary. I have been really been looking forward to this tournament for several months now). As I jumped into the shower, I was full of vim and vigor that belie my 51 years. I could feel my mojo working (whatever “mojo” is). I just knew that I was going to “kick ass” today at the tournament. (Diary, I have been shooting arrows for about a year now, I have been working on my form, shooting about 100 arrows a day, practicing Zen, and squandering most of my meager salary on new archery equipment. In other words, diary, I've done THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER
all the right things to enter the world of archery.) About 45 minutes after awakening, I carefully packed my new Sky Conquest, a dozen newly fletchcd spin wing arrows, and other miscellaneous archcry paraphernalia into the Silver Streak known to most people as a ’96 Thunderbird). The spin wings were meticulously made by my friend, Neil Foster. The spin wings fly true and straight to the gold—at least they did when Neil shot them. Neil is not just an arrowmakcr, the man is an artisan. He is also a rather nice fellow whose only fault is that he matriculated at the University of Georgia, my alma mater’s archival. Of course, all of us have been misguided at one point or another in our lives and I don't generally hold the attendance of his college of choice against him. I mean, its not exactly a felony and I figure that his decision was the result of misspent and squandered youth ! But
I digress... I pointed the Streak in the general direction of Conyers, Georgia, the reputed site of the GAA Archery Tournament. The ride along the interstate was largely uneventful and free of incident. (This is important when you arc trying to get into your best Zen like trance in order to shoot.) There were no automobile accidents, no drive by shootings, and no astronomical events such as solar eclipses, comets or asteroids crashing into the Earth in my immediate vicinity. There were also no natural disasters such as rock slides or avalanches and no meteorological events such as rain, snow, or sleet. (If the weatherman was right the U.S. Postal Service would find it easy to live up to their famous motto—at least until late this afternoon.) I was grateful for all of
these non-events as I wanted my mind to focus on my archery form, Zen, the gold circle—all that stuff. But I digress... As I exited the interstate and turned on to Old Covington Road at 9:00 am (in plenty of time for practice, 1 might add), 1 noticed an unusually large number of cars, trucks, and those hideous SUV’s------ you know, the ones that arc about as big as aircraft hangers—traveling in the opposite direction. It was slightly puzzling when I noticed that there were some mildly familiar faces driving these vehicles and 1 got a glimpse. I thought, of what appeared

I did not think too much about this and chalked it up to the fact that they were either (a)bowhuntcrs (b) poachers or (c) the result of middle age hallucinations. But I digress... As I was about to place my bow hand on the turn signal in order to turn into the Conyers Complex, I noticed a handwritten sign at the entrance that read: “ARCHERY HAS MOVED.” Parked very close to the sign was a pick up truck. Sitting in the bed of the truck was a rather large white man. I had no small amount of consternation when I quickly noticed that this rather large fellow had his arm and his index finger extended and pointing in my general direction. He was not mimicking his archery form, diary. (You will also note that large white men sitting in the back of pick up trucks in small Southern towns —and pointing their index fingers at one ------ is not generally interpreted as an unspoken invitation to “come home and have dinner with me and the wife and kids ’.) But I digress. . Upon further investigation, it turns out that the large individual was a member of the Gwinnett Archcry Association (and a nice guy. 1 might add). He was also handing out a rather hastily drawn map and instructing people to tum around and go to the softball fields at Johnson Park about ten minutes in the opposite direction. "Large guy” explained that because of a kids soccer tournament, the people who manage the park where the archcry tournament was to be held, had. at the eleventh hour, mandated a change of venue. Archers were, as usual, getting short shrift. First, NBC has decided that there will be no prime time coverage of

archery at the Sydney Olympics. In fact they will give more time to synchronized swimming----- -a sorry sport if there ever was one. (I bet that if Gecna Davis were truly competing, Olympic archery coverage would be in prime time). You will also note diary that when we archers are competing in our outdoor events, we are usually relegated to areas around landfills or nuclear dumpsites. Now this affront). My near Zen-like state was
rapidly leaving me. I was mad. Of course, it immediately occurred to me that the management people at the Conyers Complex must not be very smart people. When you think about it. they should’ve made the soccer kids change venues —not the archers. Consider this diary: Archers are generally nice people and law abiding citizens. On the other hand they are regularly seen brandishing what could be a lethal weapon. It is a well documented fact that medieval kings and knights — as well as plain old ordinary suburban deer— have been mortally wounded with a well placed arrow. What are a bunch of soccer kids going to do if they don’t get their way — maim the park officials with a soccer ball? Besides most of the archers at the GAA arc adults and as adults, we inevitably pay taxes. What kind of taxes do these little soccer playing rugrats ever pay? But I
digress.... This information about change of venue spawned an immediate moral dilemma. I could cither (1 )stay and shoot by myself at the Conyers Complex while there was a kids' soccer game going on all around me or (2) turn the Streak around and go over to the new site. I pondered this dilemma 325

and strongly considered several relevant facts:(a) 1 hate soccer; (b) it is not an American sport—you can’t even use your hands! (c) there are a lot of people outside of this country who play soccer and they are probably fine people. But oftentimes these people are from communist regimes —or worse. France, (d) I hate soccer and (c) I hate soccer. After strongly considering these facts, and being the red blooded American that I am. 1 turned the Silver Streak around, reprogrammed its “auto pilot" and headed over to Johnson Park to compete------ and to commiserate with my fellow archers about the dubious decision made by the Conyers Park and Recreation authorities. Upon arriving at the site. I immediately parked the Silver Streak and ran to the softball field where I had seen people firing arrows into the air. Like most of the other game participants on this day, 1 was not pre-registcrcd------ a fact that did immediately prompted the tournament director to make my wallet about S20 lighter. 1 registered in the category of Recurve Master Freestyle Limited praying that no one else over fifty would show up. Call it bad karma or just your plain old garden variety bad luck, diary, but the archcry gods did not answer my prayers. In fact, I think they laughed at me. Alas, it appeared that dam near everyone who showed up was over fifty. It was ridiculous. It made me beg the question:
"Don’t these old people have any thing else to do’’ How do they ever expect me to win a medal? But I digress... After plopping down my hard earned S20.00 entry fee, I valiantly began practicing. I was hitting the practice circle at 50 meters with regularity (Zen had come back) and was feeling pretty good. I was beginning to think...maybe this is the day. About twenty or so arrows into practice, Jake Veit, the tournament director assigned targets and we began to shoot. (Diary, Jake
was a real live judge at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and is one of the finer archers in the land. Legend has it that Jake knows everything that there is to know about archery'.) Just at that the time that 1 released my first arrow, the archery gods apparently had to pay up on a bet that they lost to the weather gods because in about 90 seconds, we experienced a sudden deluge. The rain that was supposed to hold off until much later in the day came in torrents. About five minutes later, a field that formerly was damp was now under water. Literally. Jake told us 326
to keep shooting. My fellow combatants in this show down of skill valiantly shot arrows while the deluge got worse. And worse. And worse. The JOAD kids in the group gleefully noticed that vapor trails followed the arrows in their flight through the rain. At the same time, the grown ups noticed that they were getting wet as hell standingout in the “pouringdown" rain shooting these dumbass arrows. I guess that’s the difference between kids and adult, diary. But I digress... After the first end of arrows people retreated to what little shelter that existed while Jake Veit reminded everyone that archcry competitions were not halted because of rain, snow, or imminent nuclear annihilation— and that this is exactly the kind of weather in which the archers from Korea had beaten the archers from China (or one of those foreign countries). It continued to rain. Diary, it was about this time that someone in the crowd —not me, of course— launched an epithet at Jake (something about his mother, I think) and reminded him that there was not a single solitary soul present who was of Korean ancestry. Furthermore, more and more people began to vocalize about the fact that at the moment they cared more about “their wet ass" as opposed to the professional achievements of foreign born archers. But I
digress... It continued to rain. Hard. Unceasingly. And the that shooting stopped—not because Jake acquiesced------ but because no one was willing to shoot underwater. We waited for the rain to stop. And waited. And waited. And waited. The longer we waited, the worse the weather became. We continued to wait. The rain got even worse. I was beginning to check the trunk of the Silver Streak to see if my old scuba gear was in it but alas it was not. It was at this time that Michelle Pruitt announced that she was going pull her arrows and go home to Thompson, Georgia. She also said if her husband wanted to ride home he was welcome to go with her but that she was going with or without him. Other people “seconded” that notion—not about going home with Michelle—but about going home. Jake protested and said that we should lake a lunch break and come back in 90 minutes, but by this time, everyone was pretty well soaked and many, if not most, decided to forfeit their S20 and go home. I was among thcm.diary. I really wanted to shoot and had gone to great personal expense to do so. But I figured that I’d go home, dry off, pour the water out of my quiver and appreciate that maybe the drought was over and that hopefully I'd live to shoot another day. (Maybe I'd even ponder the question whether or not the act of shooting arrows into the air by more than two dozen archers brought the rain!) As I was driving home, 1 was hoping that The Rainmaker— either with Burt Lancaster or Matt Damon---- - was not on the cable. 1 was also hoping those little soccer rugrats got wet as hell. It surprised me that a fellow who went to Georgia Tech (generally referred to as the North Aveue Trade School, by virtue of its location) could be so creative. I, however, did commiserate with Jim on the unfortunate tragedy at Tech. The library had a terrible fire, and both books on the shelf were destroyed! One of them had not even been colored in yet. 2000 I.B.O. World Championships Arrows Fly High In The Sky by Rhonda Campbell
Early morning shooters waited near the check in tents, before making their way through the cloud-laden ranges. The 11 th Annual I.B.O. World Championships were held high up in the mountains of West Virginia, at the Snowshoe Mountain Resort on August 10-13. More than 2,200 shooters participated in this event. The resort also provided a perfect family-friendly vacation opportunity for shooters and their spectating guests! There were events for every member throughout the weekend, and at nearly 5,000 feet above sea level and situated along a mountain ridge, one need not do anything at all to enjoy the relaxing fragrance of the fresh mountain air and the awesome beauty of the surrounding landscape! Throughout the weekend the area was buzzing with activity. Shooters and spectators poured over the grounds and enjoyed the events and activities provided at each of the area's many beautiful lodges. They were swimming, shopping, playing games, horseback riding, attending wildlife seminars and assorted classes or enjoying the cuisine of the many area restaurants. Additional activities included the Archery Trade Show, Bowhuntcr Defense and Easton Eagle Eye Shoot Out ranges and a Youth Jamboree. Fifteen archcry ranges were scattered throughout the steep and rocky inclines of the mountain ridge. Shooters contended with fog, wind, dark and dense woods, swamps and streams, sloping inclines and rocky crags and cliffs in order to complete their assigned courses and make their shots. "We had straight up and down shots”, remarked one shooter. “Yardage was a killer”, said another. Each shooter had their own personal challenge to overcome at this competition! The weather remained pleasant throughout the days, but cooled during Friday evenings twilight archery competitions. Women's Open shooter, Laurie Curtis, didn’t let the cold conditions falter her shots as she claimed 1st place in the “McKenzie Shoot Off.” Mens Pro shooter, Bobby Ketcher, also topped off the night winning the “Best of the Best” archery competition! Some 85 young archers and their families and friends formed a long line across the top of Skidder Slope to compete in the
Future Bowhuntcr Shoot on Saturday afternoon. Everyone was excited as their arrows flew and the threat of rain moved in. After the tournament, each child received a handsome pendant award and a prize bag of archcry accessories for a job well done! Drawings were held and some lucky kids also took home Mountain Bikes and a Rinehart Turkey target! The sun set quickly as some 225 shooters competed in the Easton Eagle Eye Championship Shoot Out on Skidder Slope! They were cheered on by hundreds of spectators, and everyone had a great time! Final arrows flew through the darkness and Mathews shooter, Eric Griggs, emerged as the tournament winner. Griggs was the first Open Pro shooter to win this exciting event, and was rewarded with a check for SI,000.00 for his skill and effort that evening! Excitement filled the air on Sunday, as shooters and spectators gathered for the Championship Finals, Shootoffs and then the Awards Ceremony. Mathews shooter, Shannon Caudle, reigned as Champion in the Mens Pro division with a final score of 492. Eric Griggs' score of 491 put him in a close 2nd place and Hoyt rookie, Tony Tazza, claimed 3rd with his score of 487! Women’s Pro shooters Ginger Morehead and Alicia Shultz sizzled throughout the competition, both emerging with a final score of 467! Morehead's 17 X's to Shultz’s 13 gave Morehead the lead and the Championship win! Hoyt Senior Pro, Randall Jones, out-shot his competition and ended the tournament with a score of 484, giving him 1st place for his division. Pro fingers winner, Bill Pellegrino, left his competitors trailing behind with his final score of 477! Rookie shooter, Tina Huntzinger, won this year's Women's Semi-Pro Championship. Huntzingcr was also the winner in last year's FBO division! Travis Boyd claimed 1st place in the Men's Semi-Pro division. Boyd finished in the top 5 of his division at last year's Championship as well!

Competition in the Amateur divisions was HOT! Larry Smith returned this year to claim 1st place in the MBR division! Laurie Curtis dominated over the Female Bowhuntcr Release division again! She has had a great LB.O. tournament season, claiming 1st place in two out of three of the Triple Crown series of shoots, and won this year's Championship McKenzie Shoot Off as well! Joseph Gargasz did some great shooting to claim 1st place in the Mens Open division, the largest division at most tournaments! Samantha Kline moved from last year's CUB division into this year's Women’s Open division, where she out-shot her competition and claimed 1st place at the Championship! Winners in the growing Senior divisions included Dick Dohm (MCBH), Jean Read (FSR) and David Powers (MSR). Steve Summerville dominated
over the new Hunter Class, Gene Bair won the Cross Bow division and Cecelia Hendrix claimed 1st place in the Physically Challenged Bow Hunter division! Winning Fingers shooters included Darla Cotner (FBF) who was 1st in her class last year as well, Ted Dcnkins (MBF) and Jack Jones (MCU). Traditional winners included Renac Parsons-Whiffcn (FTRD), Darrell George (MTRD) and Rick Welch (RU). Cara Fernandez claimed 1st place in the Female Youth division. Fernandez won 2nd place at last year's Championship as well! She was also one of several youths whose great shooting skills allowed them to compete in this year's Easton Eagle Eye Shoot Out! Youth Fingers winner, Kevin Kaltenbach. left his competitors trailing behind by 35 Points! Austin Miland moved up from 2nd place in last year's

Everyone wins a medal and a prize bap at the Future Bow Hunters event!
Traditional and Recurve shooters line up at the practice range, in preparation for the tough weekend of competition.
It’s been an exciting series of I.B.O. tournaments this season! But this years International Bowhuntcr Challenge was especially exciting and rewarding for Pro shooters Tony Tazza and Alicia Shultz. Hoyt Shooter. Tazza. has been bringing in high scores at tournaments throughout the season. It was only a matter of time before the Rookie-Pro from Pennsylvania would claim his place at the top! His final score of 393 gave him a three point lead above the other contenders in his class, and made him the winner of the tournament! Alicia Shultz has had a good year too! The Mathews shooter (also from Pennsylvania) has claimed numerous tournament wins since turning Pro last season. After placing second to Darla Owen at last year's competition, Shultz returned this year to claim her first place win! Throughout the weekend of July 7-9, over 1.370 shooters and spectators flocked onto the campus of Hocking Technical College in the beautiful Hocking Hills near Nelsonville, Ohio. Each shooter had high hopes of winning this third and final Jewel of the I.B.O. Triple Crown series! It would be an exciting weekend for all. as the combined scores from this and the previous two Triple Crown shoots would determine the Overall National Triple
Crown winners in each shooting class! Shooters registered as early as Thursday afternoon, and by Friday and Saturday crowds of participantsand their guests could be found at the Exhibit Hall, practice range, Bowhuntcr Defense Course and Easton Eagle Eye Shoot Out range, while others enjoyed exploring the campus and taking train rides to and from the nearby town. Many participants headed straight for their designated ranges, to find a challenging array of targets set among rocky crags, crevices and steep hills. Many a cliff had to be scaled before a shooter could take their shot! The courses were tough ... as one shooter described it; One course had a Laughing Hyena that was “laughing at everyone!” On Saturday afternoon, 27 Future Bow Hunters and their cheering families and friends stood on the hilly range next to the Exhibit Hall. The talented little archers took their best shots as parents and spectators cheered them on! Tyler Holmes brought in the highest score for the event. However, every youngster was presented with an award and a bag of archcry accessories. Everyone went away smiling from car to car, for all the competitors arc winners at the Future Bow I lunters event! A large crowd of spectators gathered for the McKenzie

Womens Pro winner, Alicia Shultz, is the Overall Triple Crown Champion for 1999 and also 2000! Open class shooter, Tim Goines, placing second. Shooters wore smiles and frowns as the tournament series neared its close. Winning archers received awards at a ceremony held on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to all winners in all the divisions!
Hard work has paid offfor Rookie Pro, Tony Tazza, who was alt smiles after winning the tournament! Shootoff on Saturday evening. This “sudden death” shootoff between winners from the 2nd Triple Crown event featured targets set at unmarked distances on a designated range. The crowd cheered as contestants dwindled away! Randy Adkins topped the Leader Board, claiming 1st place in the MBO division, the largest division at the tournament! Rob Belairc claimed Top Bow position in the MBR division, also a large division. Cecelia Hendrix (PCFB) topped the Leader Board in her division, and Barry Studt claimed 1st place in the new Hunter Class! The Amateur Senior divisions arc really growing! Sara Heath (FSR) and Edward McKinney (MSR) reigned as the winners in each of their divisions, whi le Richard Farkas emerged as 1 st place winner in the Masters (MCBH) division again! First place winners in the Amateur finger shooting divisions included Chris Goldsmith (FBF), Conrad Jones 111 (MCU), Ted Denkins (MBF) and Kevin Kaltenbach (YMF). Winners in the traditional shooter divisions included Darlene Frye (FTRD), Craig
Granitto (MTRD) and Joseph Balli (RU). Winners in the Youth and CUB divisions were Hannah Maxfield (YF). Austin Miland (YMRA.13-14), Joey Bowyer (YMRB,15-17) and Brandon Vance (CUB). Darlene Frye and Richard Farkas were the only two shooters to claim 1st place wins at all 3 tournaments in the Triple Crown series, becoming Overall Triple Crown winners as well! Other Overall Triple Crown winners included Bobby Kctchcr (PMR), Roger Thibault (PSR). Bryan Marcum (PMF).
