Take two simple steps for better accuracy all year Mount a new Consisti-Grip™ from Savage Systems on your riser, and you can say goodbye to the inconsistent hand placement that is the number one cause of poor accuracy. We make it in a machined version for straight grips, and in the molded version shown that fits any compound. Just attach it with the strong self-adhesive strip, and the finger loops will guide your hand into the right position even if your eyes are on a deer. So you can concentrate on making the shot, add one of our pendulum sights to your bow before you head out hunting this fall. From a treestand, you'll no longer have to estimate range or decide which pin to use. Just aim dead on and shoot! Savage Pendulums double as ground sights without any lockdowns, and they come with a wide choice of pins. The Night Hawk One pin shown on this Savage Featherweight Pendulum uses tritium power to shine 24 hours a day for 10 years, yet it is Pope & Young legal.

Dear archery friends, FITA has received today the very sad news that Joseph (Joe) Lin has passed away on the 28lh April. Joe was member of FITA Council from 1995-1999 and the Target Committee from 1991 till 1997. He was also a FITA International judge and many times a Technical Delegate and member of the Jury of Appeal. He was the driving force behind the success of the Chinese Taipei Archery Association. Joe was suffering since many years from a cancer and he fought the disease successfully for years. He was recently elected as VicePresident of the Asian Archery Federation in which he played an important role. Joe was a character that everyone knew in archery and he was especially known for his humor, his generosity and his friendship. He will be missed by all who knew him and on FITA is sending its sincere condolences to his family, friends, the Chinese Taipei Amateur Archery Association and the Asian Archery Federation. The PSE Mach-1 1 will be displayed at the George Herbert Walker Bush Museum in Austin. Texas. Another bow will be sent to George H. Bush for his personal use. "It was a pure thrill to meet former President Bush and show him his new bow. Certainly a highlight of my life and career in archery!", said Pete after the meeting. more pressure on themselves and try to be too precise with their shot placement. By doing this, they add several seconds to their normal shooting rhythm causing a break down in form. Usually the added time results in a weaker follow through with the bow arm producing a low right or low left shot. The problem first starts when the thinking is directed at score or winning. This pressure often starts days before the tournament and intensifies after the tournament gets under way. Focusing on score and winning is a good blue print for a poor performance. Where should your thoughts be positively directed? Think and picture yourself as shooting the best form possible. These thoughts build a positive image and relax you. People put their confidence in the sight picture, not their form. Say you arc aiming at a 35 yard turkey and really want a ten. Very few archers are steady enough to “lock on" to the ten ring and have the pin remain there. They keep holding the shot waiting for the pin to stay in the ten ring and before long have added four or five seconds to their normal shooting rhythm. Due to the extra holding time, the archer has allowed the back pressure to decrease. This is a common scenario for a bad shot. How do you correct the problem? Trust your form not you sight. Quit aiming! Hold the pin as close to the desired impact point as possible and let the pin float. If you tighten muscles in an attempt to guide the sight pin. the effect of these tightened muscles will be reflected in the shot execution. Concentrate and make sure that you shoot a shot with perfect form. If the form is good, the results will be much better than it would have been if you had kept aiming. Prove it to yourself so you will trust your form. Put a forty cm. target up at forty yards and shoot twenty shots for score. Repeat the process but this time let the pin float and shoot a rhythmic shot while you arc concentrating of shooting perfect form. The scores should reflect where your trust should be directed. Then, the next time you are in a pressure situation, you should have the confidence needed to shoot a good shot. Instead of focusing on the erratic pin movement, concentrate on perfect shot execution. Confidence and trust in your form will help you shoot like a champion.

SUPPORT YOUR ADVERTISERS 116
In other sports, we are taught to power up, swing or concentrate past the point of contact. For example, a long jumper may power up to jump 24 feet if he wants to succeed at 18 feet: a tennis player or golfer is taught to swing past or through the ball contact; and karate champions and boxers learn to strike or punch past or beyond the board or face they arc trying to break. Their concentration and anticipation is on a PRESET CONCLUSION which is past the goal they wish to attain. Unfortunately, most archers “conclude" their shot AT THE EXPLOSION and not well past it. This causes many of our problems. All we need for success is to understand and modify our shot sequence and make some changes in our practice methods. Most people have some type of followthrough in their shot sequence, which they consider to be the end of the shot. Followthrough is simply the involuntary dynamic reaction of the body to the release of tension at the moment of execution. Unfortunately, too often we end our followthrough prematurely because we ANTICIPATE a conscious release. The duration of our followthrough eventually begins to grow shorter and shorter until it no longer exists, and we are finally quitting the shot at the moment of "let-go”. Our effort is ending as the shot is going off, before the arrow is clear of the bow. This leads to erratic shooting, bad groups, and confusion. The worst case scenario is known as target panic or buck fever. How can we stop anticipation? We can’t! As thinking creatures, we will naturally anticipate some or all the parts of any activity which we arc engaged in on a repetitive basis. Our only hope to totally escape the negative effects of anticipation is to REDIRECT it to a place or sound or act that happens AFTER the arrow is gone from the bow. It sounds complicated, but it's not if you compare it to any other sport. 1982 - 20th Anniversary - 2002
For example, if a golfer, tennis, or baseball player stopped their swing one foot past ball contact, can you imagine how erratic their results would be? Even though one foot past contact could be called a followthrough, soon some of the swings would stop 8 inches past, and then 2 inches past, and eventually AT contact, or maybe DURING contact. Can you see the similarities to archery? That’s why successful archers learn to pull through the shot and follow through to conclusion. Conclusion is where we predetermine and pre-measure the duration of our fol lowthrough and the end of our mental and physical effort. There are three basic forms of conclusion... sight, sound, and Conclusion! touch. There are many variations of each of them, but whichever one you choose, they must extend BEYOND the time it takes for the nock end of the arrow to clear the front of the bow. Examples are, the string or release hand dropping straight back and TOUCHING the shoulder. SEEING the arrow hit the target, and HEARING the arrow hit the target. All of these occur after the arrow is gone and we can no longer affect its flight. You should choose such a point (one you trust the most) as the conclusion of your shot. Hundreds of times in the shooter's school, we witness the lack of conclusion in a student’s sequence being responsible for most of their problems. Because nearly a third of my students are already accomplished shooters, with state and/or sectional wins to their credit, they don't have a lot of basic problems in form and execution. Their problems are usually THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER
very subtle and not easily spotted by the average coach or shooting partner. Dave Hryn, front West Seneca, NY was a good example of this. Many of you have seen Dave’s success story that we ran in 1999. Before Dave came to the NFAA Shooter’s School, he had already won 16 Mid-Atlantic Championships. 33 State Championships, and was an NAA Level 3 coach and an NFAA Certified Instructor. As Dave stated in his letter, ”... I was a bit skeptical about the school... after 25 years of competitive NFAA shooting. ... 1 thought that there would be little new information that 1 would learn ... Other shooters I had talked to had spoken highly of the shooting school... To say that I thoroughly enjoyed it would be an understatement... For some time, 1 had a problem with a 7 o’clock miss, either just out of the “x", a 5 and sometimes a 4. 1 had some top coaches in my area analyze my form and I spent countless hours looking at slow motion video, all to no avail. I am pleased to report that Bcmic spotted my fault. Finding out the cause to this problem was alone, worth the price of the school.” In Dave's case, like so many others, I was able to show him that
Dave Hyrn
the reason for his 7 o’clock misses was because he was anticipating the end of his sequence ... followthrough! Unfortunately, his followthrough didn't have an end to it. Followthrough... to where?? So, sometimes Dave would shorten followthrough and end his efforts just past “let-go" (Dave is a FreeStyle Limited finger shooter who uses a clicker.) On occasion, he would end his effort at “let-go” and as he started to drop his bow arm, the arrow was still on the string... the result was a low left, 7 o’clock miss. Why? No conclusion, that’s why! At this point, Dave realized that he needed one more step in his sequence ... conclusion! He revamped his shooting form, release technique and complete mental program and ended up taking first place in the Atlantic City Archery Classic. Two months later, he won the NFAA Outdoor Nationals in Watkins Glen, NY. Since then, Dave has also set an IFA A World Record for the Field Round and holds the IFAA World Record for the Hunter Round. So, as Dave found out, if you anticipate your conclusion, such as touching your draw shoulder with your string or release hand, then you will have already allowed the arrow to get past your control by the time you reached your shoulder with your hand. This is how you turn anticipation into a positive instead of a negative ... just anticipate touching your shoulder (instead of the clicker or the moment of explosion) and watch your scores go up!

From the Senior Corner By Joe Bauernfeind Hi. again, fellow archers of all ages. As you may remember my last article dealt mainly with the qualifying sites for the 2003 National Senior Games. I also promised a report of what’s going on at the major archery venues such as AMO. Vegas and Kansas City and I'll attempt to bring the high points back out of my rapidly failing memory. First, since it's freshest in my mind. I’ll delve into what went down in my annual duel with Harry "Mutt” Miller at the Atlantic City Classic. If any of you new readers arc unfamiliar with Mr. Miller atid are interested in the full story, see if you can get some back issues from the spring editions, going back about 3 or 4 years. Basically I want you to be aware that I always used to be the big dog in the yard but in the last couple of years, a new Alpha male has driven me out as leader of the pack. What went down this year was me. For the first time we went head to head on the first target tn the Senior Division and it was a dog-fight from arrow #1. After the ritual snarling and trash talking we shot it out for the title and the big guy shot me down. 1 think we can both be proud of the way we shot and if anyone had to beat me. the Mutt is deserving of the title of the Senior Division. Of course, we both got a break when the NFAA took over the reins and set the Senior age limit to 55 instead of 50. which it has been for years under Helen's direction. out there who weren't going to get a shot at us. made us feel a lot more at ease. 1 feel obliged to mention however that if the NFAA had come through and put in a division for the Masters at 65 and over, 1 would have ruled over the really old dogs. Big deal. Anyway, the fight isn't over. I'm going of to the hills to lick my wounds but I'll be back next year to try and regain control of the pack. Enjoy it while you can Mr. Miller. As another famous Germanic dog once said, “I’ll be back". As long as my mind is tuned to Atlantic City, I’ll continue with my other recollections of a great shoot. The shoot culminated what I think has been the most exciting turn-around in archcry for many years. Under the direction of Wally Rcuger and Bruce Cull of the NFAA, the three major indoor shoots of the year have been blended into a major trifecta, with prize money and merchandise awards rivaling the biggest of the 3D shoots. With the introduction of these larger purses, begun last year when the NFAA bought the Vegas shoot, the influx of talent from the 3D world has upped the ante and brought the excitement back into indoor spot shooting. Mathews Archcry, also, by sending their top shooters to do battle and offering their considerable contingency prizes to the top finishers, has helped to bring about this revolution. Now we truly do have the top archers in the world, competing head to head for prizes which may someday make it possible to cam a living as an archery pro. What a turn around. The human dynamo behind most of this, is the VP of NFAA "the mad” Bruce Cull. There doesn't seem to be any end to his energy and ideas and the NFAA staff and officers have been right there all the way making it come true. The only comment I can make, which 1 don’t mean in a negative way. is that the upper echelon of the organization is made up mostly of seniors and I wonder how long they will be able to shoulder the work load, which is considerable, as volunteers. I hope a younger paid crew can begin to shoulder most of the load as these shoots continue to grow in the future. Just looking at the number of monster bales, which must be set up and broken down for each shoot, is enough to make me tired. The format this year in Atlantic City was changed slightly to accommodate the use of the larger, less mobile target butts. The butts stayed in place this year and the shooting line moved. The ordering of the distances was also changed, starting with the forty meter distance and finishing up at 60 meters. This brought the shooting line back closer to the spectators for the final ends. It was different, but worked out quite well. Some adjustments were

made to accommodate spotters for the archers and everyone seemed quite happy with the results. One thing that didn’t make too many happy faces was the elimination of flight money. Most guys who go for the Championship flight, do so with the idea that they still have a chance to win some bucks. If this isn’t corrected in the future, I think we'll sec fewer archers willing to donate their entry fee for the benefit of the few top shooters who really have a chance at winning. This will make it harder to generate the type of prize money which attracts these big guns. Another thing which some felt was lacking was a Pro division for the Senior Pro's. After being offered a chance Io compete against each other in Vegas and Kansas City, they were lumped together with (he young bucks in Atlantic City. No flighting or age division is a sure way to kill the interest in shooting for money. Hopefully as more experience is gained by the organizers, a fairer distribution of prize money will be achieved. On a positive note, there were numerous team shoot opportunities which afforded all of those who entered a chance to collect some cash. A marked yardage 3D shoot has been introduced at each of the 3 major indoor shoots, to attract even more archers who arc more interested in that format. It's great to sec this mingling of the two worlds. After all is said and done, it’s all archery. I don’t know how many of the spot shooters crossed over and tried their luck at the 3D game. Probably not as many as switched in the other direction. It would be nice if the NFAA would break down the crossover numbers and publish the results in their Archery magazine. 1 think this is going to be the next major area to attack. Namely, how do we put together a format which would be exciting enough for the spot shooters to jump into the 3D venue. Once again money will be the big factor, but the major sticking point is still going to be the unmarked distances at most 3D shoots. It takes a heap of time to get good at yardage judging and unless you gel that down pat. you don’t stand a chance against archers who shoot great, as well as being able to judge distances to within a yard. The head guys in each organization arc going to have to brainstorm some ideas to overcome this hurdle. There were several highlights to this year’s tournament. On the first day Duane

With a host of scores in the 595 and up area, the big prize was still up for grabs on Sunday. Note that two of the top three were 3 Ders shooting solo cam bows. So much for the myth of two cam invincibility. But the day was far from over. The BIG hook for this whole trifecta scheme was the shoot-off by all of those who shot in all three events. for a brand new Mustang automobile and to these eyes it looked like about 50 archers had done the trick. The round devised to determine the winner was very exciting and ran like a charm with lots of spectators staying after the shoot to watch. Starting at 10 meters, each archer shot one arrow at a specially designed target face, with a five ring about the size of the Vegas 18 meter face. Any archer who failed to match the highest score took down his/her target and became a spectator. The line then moved back 5 meters and the next arrow was shot. At about 30 meters, the group started to get considerably smaller and even many of the favorites bit the dust. At 50 meters the dot must have been almost invisible to
the 4 archers remaining. Darrin McCutcheon drilled the spot and the crowd held it’s breath as Colin Booth took his full allotted time before putting his arrow just outside of it. Eighteen year old Jesse Broadwater had also missed as had the others on the line and Darrin had the car, just as he had predicted he would. He already had made plans to magically turn the Mustang into a Corvette. Following the car shoot-off, the crowd moved to the 3D range to watch Mike Anderson win himself a Polaris 4 Wheeler. Sunday’s finish was compressed down to two lines instead of the usual three which gave everyone an early start for the trip home. Once again, as in Vegas last year Jeff Hopkins shot himself to the top spot with a 599 for a two day total of 3 down. I believe Duane took second with Eric Griggs finishing third. This was far and away the best field ever assembled for this shoot and the competition was tight right down to the last arrow. I understand that Hopkins also won the 3D event, but I’m not absolutely sure ofthat. All of the scores should be posted on the NFAA web site, so if I goof you’ll be able to check for yourself.

I'm going to have to give you a condensed report on AMO, Vegas and Kansas City, as I’ve used up most of my ink allotment to get to this point. In Vegas it came down to a two man shoot-off between Mike Anderson and that pesky 18 year old Jesse Broadwater, with Mike taking the top spot on an inside out end. SI0,000 dollars + S5000 from Mathews makes for a nice weekend’s work. Mike Strassman took the Senior Pro crown over Roger Thibalt. Once again the Riviera proved to be a great site for this tournament with the ever present Brucic keeping things flowing smoothly. Kansas City saw a multi-man shootoff with dark horse Billy Meyers coming out on top over some very tough opponents. In the Senior Pro Division Jim Hadley edged out Roger Thibalt for the crown in a two man shoot-off. That's two seconds for Roger in two of the biggest shoots of the year. Kansas City is great for me. It was my old stomping ground when I was in the Navy?? And it’s where 1 met and married Mrs. B. so we enjoy a visit to our old familiar spots. Last in this column, but first during the year was the AMO Show, held this year at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. As usual 1 get to see very little of everything there because of the constant action at our booth, but it is a show to end all shows. The hotel is the size of a city and getting from the parking lot to the show floor was about a ' mile hike through the hotel. On the night of the banquet, 1 left my jacket at the booth and didn't realize that my car keys were in the pocket. That meant another trip back and forth through the entire hotel and a call to security to get me into the locked up display area. My legs are still tired from that trip. Well, I'm out of bullets at last and I hope this was all interesting enough to get you to this point. Ifyou'rc going to Bedford for the 1“ leg of the I BO Triple Crown. look me up and we’ll chat. I’m also planning a trip to the ASA in Roanoke. The NFAA Mid-Allantic Outdoor and the NFAA Nationals in Watkins Glen. 1 hope to see all of you at one shoot or the other. Handling Pressure By
Roger VV. Brcternitz Ch.T.
Roger IF. Rreternitz Ch. T.
What's the difference between shooting in your back yard, or on the practice range with your friends. One big difference...you're relaxed, you're very positive in all you do. Why arc you positive? Because every time you make a mistake, nobody cares! You joke about it, you're having a good time, and you're enjoying the moment, the company, the fresh air (if outside), the camaraderie, you’re going to Pizza Hut afterwards, the world is a beautiful place, and you shoot the eyes out of the target. Now...what happens when you are in serious competition, and you really want to do your best so you can walk away with the trophy, and hear everybody saying, “ Wow, is he/ she great", or “What a competitor, they really know how to bear down”...blah blah, etc. THIS is a completely different world! Why.. .because it means something, it means an everlasting record that is written in stone, for all to see, upon a tablet called a score card. It means cither acceptance by the "Pack” or disgrace you will have to live with until the next time when you will have a chance to redeem yourself or dig a deeper grave. This is how some of us view winning or losing, and it is what causes what we call pressure. Everybody causes their own brand of pressure in each and everything we do. and sadly enough it is largely a result of one thing...self-image. We all have an image of what we THINK we look like, act like, and of how others must perceive us. The higher this self-image we create, the more we have to lose if we do not live up to it. So...it usually works like this. We learn how to shoot, get belter, win for the first time in the lower class, then move up. Win again, then move up. Now we’re getting this self-image. This is the image that we're on the verge of becoming hot stuff. We win again, this time against some of the better competitors. Now we're really hot stuff. 1982 - 20th Anniversary - 2002
Now we think we should win all the time and.. THE PRESSURE IS ON! People are counting on us, we’re on a team, we’re our OWN team, what will it look like if we don’t come through! We have created our own pressure, our own dragon, and it's up to us to overcome this monster we've created. Maybe all that is NOT what pressure is to us. Maybe it's our first actual competitive shoot and we're not sure of how to do anything, we're nervous. We’re nervous and afraid we'll do something crazy, like shoot the range master in the foot, or wing a arrow out into the woods and kill that squirrel that’s just trying to live...or what ever. It all amounts to one thing, TENSION, and our muscles can never perform the way we arc used to when we have tension in our minds and our bodies. TRUTH: Mental tension causes physical tension. Let's slip back in time thousands of years ago when Nco-Pithic Man was running from cave to cave looking for one spot not inhabited by a bear or tiger. He had one purpose in life...life itself...survival. Nature gave him some very powerful attributes. One of these attributes was the automatic ability to summon greater than average strength when needed to fight or run. This is called the “Flight or fight" response, that I am sure almost everybody is acquainted with. Several things happen, one of which is a higher amount of adrenaline is secreted into the system that give us a boost in energy. This also happens when we become stressed, or come under an unusual amount of pressure. Like when we hear the words, "This is for score”, or our arrows don’t go exactly where we would like them to. Suddenly we feel our body go into physical high gear, our heart beats faster and blood starts pumping at an increased rate, and suddenly our body wants to fly in seven THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER
different directions at the same time. Now we are suppose to hold firm and steady on a little round circle, and release an arrow at just the right millisecond, not to mention following through until the arrow hits the target...give me a break!! This whole automatic response was designed to quickly get us running at top speed with something chasing us that wants to cat us, not quietly stand there and shoot an arrow into a little X. So how do we USE and control this automatic response instead of let it control us? First of all extra adrenaline gives us extra strength, that is a fact, but...it also causes the muscles to lose some degree of precision in the control we would like to exhibit. So now we have greater strength, but less control. Since we shoot lighter bows, and compound bows requiring less physical strength, we need more control and less power. So the obvious conclusion is.. .don’t allow yourself to get stressed out and involuntarily “Shoot up" with adrenaline and whack yourself out. Easier said than done...right? The trick here is to Icam how to relax in the face of "danger" or in this case pressure. Here arc some specific things to do to prevent instant adrenaline rush. The first thing is to make
sure you get to the range early enough to go through a pre-shoot relaxation regiment. Take a few minutes and be alone, close your eyes, and breathe deeply, this puts the body on an even keel and is less susceptible to self-induced stress. Second, make sure your equipment is all tuned the way you want it, and ready to go. There’s nothing like feeling good, just to have part of your equipment malfunction, or be lost, or not fit at the right place, right time etc. This causes stress that you could have avoided easily. Third, breathe deeply while shooting, and in between shots, and here’s a very important tip. TAKE YOUR TIME. Use ALL the time allotted you for shooting all your arrows. I have noted when people began to shoot poorly they shoot faster. I guess they just want to shoot the next arrow immediately to prove to themselves they can do better than the last one. This begins a downward spiral. The worse you shoot the faster you shoot, and the faster you shoot the worse you shoot. REST in between shots. Set the bow down, relax. look at the target, picture the next arrow hitting the X. take a breath, roll your neck and head around, shrug your shoulders. THEN knock the next arrow and shoot. Just doing this will greatly improve your scores.
See Roger’s Championship Archery ad on page 102, but... remember to do it. Have your friend give you a signal to slow down, or to remind you, it’s not easy when you’re ticked at yourself for the last bad shot. Anger is your worst enemy in any athletic competition. An old Chinese Kung Fu master once said. “He who fights with anger battles two opponents”. It’s hard not to become angry when you've just dumped an arrow into the lower scoring area, but if you let it stress you out it will shoot that surge of uncontrolled adrenaline into your body, and be the beginning of that downward spiral that people rarely come out of. Remember, you got into this sport to have fun, so start having fun, and view each one of your misses as learning experiences...you’ll live longer, and Good Shooting Roger

information you pass on as factual. Realize that much information you read or have heard may well be only someone’s personal experience or personal opinion and more often than not is based on unconfirmed and incorrect conclusions. In my judgment, maximum accuracy cannot be realistically expected without incorporating the use of a bowstring release aid device, due simply to the widely established fact that a finger release ofthe bowstring is more difficult to duplicate continually. Consider also that when used properly, their greatest value can actually be their ability to produce an effective and improved aiming procedure.
Most everywhere except in the U.S. the release aid is considered an integral component of the compound bow with extremely few if any compounds shot with fingers. To me, if your goal is to shoot as accurately as you possibly can it is only an exercise in futility to shoot without a release aid. 6. SPEED SET™ ARROW RESTS QUIETLY PROFICIENT
One must wonder how in the world GOLDEN KEY FUTURA keeps coming up with Arrow Rest designs to help the archer/ bowhuntcr shoot so well. For 2002 a pair that will sec quite a few arrows zipping across them are the new SPEED SET and SPEED SET HUNTER. The SPEED SET REST is a quality Rest that features its own ‘Speed Vision’ Spring Tension Adjuster that lets you see how much you arc adjusting the Launcher Spring. The SPEED SET HUNTER (formerly the EZ Tune 100) has all the reliability, adjustability and versatility one could ever look for in a Rest and comes standard with TM Pins, black Hush Tubes and also TM Quiet Pin Launchers. Both Rests are CNC machined with the most sophisticated adjustment features available for quick and simple settings. ARIZONA E-Z FLETCH™ DOES CARBON ARROWS YOUR WAY
With the advent of the Carbon Arrow Shaft, it is apparent that fletching has become as important a function for the ‘doit-yourselfer’ as it has been for aluminum and wood shafts. For the avid archer, fletching carbon arrows is not only a lesson in saving money but also in pride. For the target archer and bowhunter, the fun and art of making arrows allows for each to make an arrow to exacting, personal specifications, make the arrows when needed and save money over buying store bought, pre-fictched arrows. With the new ARIZONA E-Z FLETCH for Carbon
Golden Kcy-Futura. The name says ‘Arrow Rests’ and their new MIRAGE FALL-AWAY is sure to be one of the hottest Rests of the year for 2002. The MIRAGE is truly a revolutionary Fall-Away Rest that begins the draw with the patented Super Scoop™ Launcher System in the down position. The arrow is simply placed in the center of the Safety Bracket and nocked as usual. As the bow is drawn back the Launcher System quietly rotates upward, capturing and centering the arrow shaft until, at full draw, the arrow is held at the top, in the proper shooting position. At release the Launcher instantly drops out of the way for unimpeded arrow flight. Robert Troncoso, VP made the announcement: The MIRAGE is a remarkably unique Arrow Rest that works with a minimum of effort and a maximum of efficiency. Every archer will love the fact that is has far less moving parts to jam. break or complicate the shot than other type Rests. It is so simple yet so effective to use. The Launcher appears almost magically into shooting position as you draw to capture, center and hold the arrow and then disappears during the shot. It is the epitome of Fall-Away Rests. New FiberGlow Sight Pins Can store Power Of Sun all Night The Consisti~Grip guides your hand to the same position time after time, to tighten your groups.
Good archers have long known how important consistent hand placement is to top accuracy. Now with the help of inventor Mike Bcvillc, Savage Systems has developed a way to make sure your hand always fits on the grip in the same position, even if you are picking up the bow while your eyes arc on an approaching buck Regardless of your hand shape or size, it is guided into the correct position as you slip our fingers through the loops of the new Consisti-Grip. Like the finger groves on a fine target pistol, Consisti-Grip feels natural and comfortable. As an added benefit, it eliminates the need for a bow sling. Most archers who add one to their bow will sec an immediate improvement in their shooting. "In today’s busy world it is hard for bowhuntcr to find time to practice with their equipment on a regular basis,” Huey Savage said. “By eliminating the hand placement changes that are the most common cause of poor groups, ConsistiGrip can make anyone’s practice, and their hunting, more rewarding." Savage Systems builds the new Consisti-Grip in two versions that attach in seconds with a self-adhesive strip. The composite Consisti-Grip conforms to either straight or curved risers. The machined aluminum model is for straight risers only. Both work on right or left hand bows. The product comes packaged with an alcohol pad to clean the riser, and with an extra 3M adhesive strip in case you want to move the Consisti-Grip to a different bow. The FiberGlo pin combines a conventional fiber optic aim sight with a component sealed in the base that can absorb ultraviolet rays and release them overtime as visble light
Revised March 22, 2002: Within a couple months of the introduction. Savage Systems has found a way to improve the performance of FiberGlo pins so they can store and release the Sun's energy for hours longer, even all night long. Like other fiber optic pins, the FiberGlow uses the energy of the sun to light its green fiber optic aim point. But that energy is also being directed back into a powder at the base of the pin. A chemist could tell you that the powder is made from strontium aluminat with europium (phosphor) and dysprosium. A physicist could explain that only green FiberGlo pins can be offered because that pale green color matches the wavelength of the light

energy being emitted. All you need to know is that the powder has the unique ability to trap light energy and then release it over time to keep the FiberGlo working through the evening and on into night. The glow time is near a direct ratto to the charging time. You can take your bow out of its case to hunt in the afternoon and enough energy will be stored to keep the pin charged until well past dark. If you'll be hunting predators at night or need the pin to still be glowing for the next morning’s deer or bear hunt, you should leave the sight uncovered on a porch or windowsill where it can receive daylight through the day. Extensive exposure to sunlight can affect your bow finish and string life, so cover the rest of the bow or leave just the sight projecting from the case. You can also charge just the pin with a black light or other artificial light source. Unlike electrically lit pins, the FiberGlo can’t be affected by temperature or moisture. There’s no switches to wear out. no batteries to lose power in cold weather. The product has an indefinite shelflife, so it doesn’t matter if you purchase FiberGlo pins through your dealer, direct from the factory at 800-545-4868. or through our web site (www.savagearchery.com or www.abetterarchery.com ). NEW PRODUCTS FOR THE ENTHUSIASTIC SHOOTER HI-TEK Sports Products, Inc. introduces three new archery products for the competitive archer and the cunning hunter: TH E STOPPER, THE HEAVY DUTY KIT, and THE V-FLITE. The new stabilizer, the STOPPER, utilizes Hl-TEK's patented powder-filled and BUMPER technologies. It consists of a powderfilled chamber used in conjunction with an elastomeric end cap. The STOPPER is available in different lengths and with two different powders. It comes in standard black as well as Hardwoods. Timber. X-tra Grey, Forest Floor and Break Up camouflage patterns. The HEAVY DUTY KIT for stabilizers also employs HITEK’s BUMPER technology and is comprised of an elastomeric coupler, a set screw, and your choice of two or four ounce weights used at the end of the stabilizer. By adjusting the set screw, the shooter can fine-tune the absorption to help reduce shock. vibration, and torque for his particular shooting system and style. At the request of 3-D shooters. Archers retreiving arrows -Photo by Pau! Davison
As a Jersey guy. the "Classic" has always been on the top on my list of favorite shoots. This is my 16" consecutive year shooting the A/C Classic and with the exception of Vegas there is no other indoor shoot close to it for pure enjoyment. Entering the energy charged A/C Convention Center. I wondered what the NFAA had in mind to maintain the shoot's distinct character and yet put their own spin on it. I ran into my dear friend Dr. Helen Bolnick, the shoot's founder, on Saturday morning. Helen turned the reigns of the shoot over to the NFAA last year after a great 25 year run. Watching from the sidelines must have been emotional for her. but she hid it well. This shoot was and will always be one of her babies. On bchalfof all the thousands of shooters who benefited from I Iclcn's past labors a very warm "Thank You!” So how did the NFAA do at running the Classic? Considering this was their first run at it. pretty dam good! The formal remained basically the same with only a few minor but positive changes. We shot 40. 50. then 60 meters rather than 60. 50, 40 as in the past. This new format actually added to the excitement when watching the top guns shoot the final ends. With 60 meters as the last end it could be anybody's game. The Morrell backstops were terrific. Pulling arrows was a pleasure. Because of their size the targets remained stationary and the shooting line moved. Being a bit away from the crowd might actually have been a little better for the archer's concentration. It was for me. Everybody had his or her game face on. Spotters were initially asked to stay at the main line, but some creative grumbling prompted a quick change. This format did make it a little tough on the spectators who had to view every arrow from well beyond 60 meters. The shooters being so far from the bow racks was inconvenient but a fair trade off for the great backstops. Portable bow stands sold out in minutes much to the enjoyment of the vendors. The fact that there was a bunch of "Cash" and a brand new Mustang on the line added to the excitement. A combination of "Big Cash" awards and this being the last leg of the "World Archcry Festival 3 Star" tournament schedule brought out all of the big guns. There were a few exciting firsts. Darrin McCutcheon, did a hom blasting scries of NASCAR style drive by’s, up and down 138
the shooting line, in his brand new Red Mustang. Brave guy. but he was one happy boy. Darrin won the 3 Star NFAA Shoot Off for the Mustang and also walked (drove?) away with lots of cash from the exciting “Limb Saver” Challenge. Way to go Darrin! It was great to sec some well deserved prizes awarded. Be sure to thank all ofour friends at "Limb Savers. Simms Vibration Labs, Hoyt, Morrell, Easton, Tm-Ball, BCY. Gordon. Surc-Loc. Reflex, McKenzie, Boman. Mathews & Electronic Awards and of course the NFAA” for their support. So how was the shooting? The lineup included a “who's who" of archcry. Every big name in the sport was there and the competition was fierce. At the end of day one Duane Price had shattered the shoot record with a perfect 600. Helen Bolnick confirmed that this was never done before. To me it is inconceivable for anyone to clean these tough distances. Duane also shot the first ever 3OO-3Ox Vegas round so he is no stranger to the word “perfect". The top bale on day two was Duane Price. Jeff Hopkins. Eric Griggs and Dave Cousins. That’s some line up. It was neck and neck up to the very last end. When I joined the top four Freestyle shooters at the target on the last end the gold was a bouquet of 20 tightly packed arrows. One of Duane’s final shots was a thin hair high, blowing off the chance of a shoot off. That one hot load arrow gave Jeff Hopkins the win and a new total high score of 1197. The women’s top bale on day two consisted of Connie Calloway. Michelle Ragsdale. Becky Pearson and Lisa Fennell. And it was soooooo close! Connie edged out her gal pals by the thinnest of margins. Michelle, Lisa and Becky all had trailed by one skinny point. Lisa squeezed out two more tens to grab a coveted second. I’ve watched a lot of excited winners before but Connie was absolutely beside herself. My bet is the folks from Mathews were delirious with both Jeff & Connie shooting their bows. Of course the Martin folks were doing back flips over Duane Price’s perfect 600. I made it a point to plop myself behind the Male recurve shooters bale to watch the magic of Joseph McGIyn. Vic Wundcrle and Butch Johnson. In the end two points split the difference between 1" & 3"1 with Joe on top, followed by Vic, then Butch. I could write a story about every bale but Arlync Rhode would

need more advertisers to pay for a heavier US Archer. I do apologize for not being able to cover all that went down, but with nearly 700 shooters there arc too many stories. New Jersey's own Sonny Foote pulled a classic move. He learned that if you just finished shooting 50 meters and arc getting set for 60 meters you should never set vour sight for 40 meters. His first arrow was a perfect shot, neatly drilling all 4 score cards and the cardholder with a loud thump. That one arrow blew Sonny's chances to stay in 3"1 place. Tim Audits from South Dakota was only down 2 points when he drilled a perfectly aimed arrow into the wrong target at 60 meters. Ouch!

I had a chance to talk at length with our winner Jeff Hopkins, and he is an interesting guy. Jeff never shot an indoor tournament until 2001 when he decided to go to Vegas. I was a witness to the spectacular shoot off when he won Vegas on his very first real indoor tournament. Jeff cut his teeth shooting 3-D and bow hunting. Since 95 he holds 7 World 3-D recordsand 7 3-D Shooter of the Year awards, since 95. He has shot pro on the 3-D circuit for 11 years. This was his 4,h indoor shoot and his first A/C Classic. Jeff s score of 1197 (down only 3) is a solid record. Jeff said the pressure was a lot heavier at the Classic than Vegas, but it was real cool shooting so far away. Jeff credits a good part of his success Io his coach Curtis Beverly. Being a 3-D guy he said it’s nice being able to sec what you're aiming at and knowing how far away it is. Jeff has never shot an NFAA field round. I hate to think what will happen when he takes on that challenge. He shoots simply because “It’s Fun". He wanted to be sure to thank all the sponsors for their support in making this type of shoot possible. A proud dad, Jeff carried his boy Scott in his arms and got a winners kiss from his bride Tara as he shook hands and was congratulated by his peers. Jeff said that, in order for Archery to get to the next level, all types and styles of shooters must stick together and work as one unit. He acknowledged that there is division between classes and styles and said. “We all shoot arrows. We are all one Family. Get out and meet your relatives". He said that diversity is what makes the Classic unique. Collegiate Recurve, 3-D, Barcbow, Traditional, Crossbow, NFAA and any other style you can think of arc all there, as Jeff put it, just having “Fun" and shooting as "One Family". Congratulations to all the winners and to every shooter who stepped up to the plate. Thanks again to Helen Bolnick for her groundwork and to the NFAA for their vision in try ing to take the “Classic" shoot to the next level. For myself 1 hope the shoot stays in Jersey and that the Atlantic City Classic has another good 25 years. May the Dot be with you! Gene Grodzki
Biographies taken at the tournament will be featured in the July-August issue. Thank you for all your cooperation.
