2003) held in Switzerland at Greifensce near Zurich, went off without a hitch. Before the event began, a German national spoke to me concerning the event. "Everything is ‘perfect’ in Switzerland" he said. My impression was that his statement was meant to be a derisive one. As the event unfolded it became extremely clear that everything would, indeed, be PERFECT in Switzerland. From sweeping the floor in front of the target butts to the control of the event, nothing was overlooked by the sponsor. The shooting lines were controlled by Grecn-Amber-Red lights along with buzzer and public address system. The Five foot line in front of the line of Target stands kept archers back far enough to allow

scoring and judging but. close enough to observe and score. Not one complaint was registered or overheard concerning the judging. Judging was accomplished by three judges, on each shooting line. who individually judged each disputed arrow. Upon completion of their individual inspections, each judge withdrew from the target and showed their IN or OUT card to the judges only. That done. the chief judge returned to the target to deliver the verdict. No discussion was involved in the process. It was evident from comments that the archers approved this method and, considered it to be “very fair" to the shooter. After each scoring period, the man in charge of maintaining the shooting specifications inspected each butt for the necessity of new paper faces, butt repair or replacement and. made sure each target stand was exactly in its proper position. Nothing was left to chance and. each person had at least one other going behind to check each task. The immediate Zurich area appears to have two archery clubs with a third club being close by. All three clubs provided volunteers to the tasks required in mounting this event. Again it was truly perfect! The weather was as suspected, a bit of snow, a bit of Zurich overcast or fog (due to the city being at the foot of the mountains). a patch of blue sky on occasion and. COLD. Temperatures of approximate 17 degrees (-13 C ) average, prevailed throughout the week’s shooting. Opening ceremonies included a rendition by the famous Swiss Alphoms and. some traditional band pieces as well. As each nation was announced, flags of the nations were presented by Cub and Junior shooters. The Games were opened and. the week was started. At the conclusion of the week of shooting, the closing ceremonies and awards were combined with a banquet of fine Swiss food. WIAC-2003 was the second of the new' four-day events. Prior to WIAC-2001 in New Zealand, a two-day format was in effect. World records were maintained on both one-day (or single) round scores and. on two-day totals. New records will now be kept on the four-day event and. of course, on the one-day or single round scores. Two-day records will no longer be maintained as they arc no longer relevant. Scores for the WIAC-2003 will appear in this issue. Please note the 1FAA Calendar of events in this issue along with pertinent information provided on the events. Hope you are making plans to attend the third North American Field Archery Championship (NAFAC-2003) to be held in the State of Florida. The event will be held in the Fall of the year and, will provide a respite for those archers buried deep in the snow and cold Northern States. Until next issue - Ken

NORTH AMERICAN FIELD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIP -(NA FAC-2003) -The IFAA, in cooperation with Nl'AAUSA and its member Florida Archen Association (FAA), have acted to organize the event The Everglades Archen' Club will host the NFAA and FAA sanctioned 2003 NAFAC on 13-14 December 2003 FAA will lend its able assistance and administration to the shoot The Everglades Club is located south of Miami in I lomestead. Florida If you have never been to Everglade Archers range, you are missing a very diverse shooting experience The venue offers shots over the lake with mild up-hill and downhill settings There are no other ranges in Florida like this one You reallv do need to be in Florida at some lime during the "winter" months. What an excuse to go South with the Snowbirds and enjoy, even for a few days, what they enjoy all winter Many Canadian archers as well as those from the Northern United States will already have made their way South for the winter Do y ou recall the "Price is Right" TV show where the MC says “Come on Down"? Well, we have this to say- Come on down! The Price is Right - the time is right? With the normal format of 28 Field, 28 Animal, and 28 Hunter, you will have plenty of arrows to shoot. Everglades is noted for its "Beast Feast" and food will lie served both days.

Archery coordinator Jennie Richardson Central Kentucky News-Journal, 02/19/03 Archery program targets more than just physical education By Lindsay Beals. Intent Arrows arc soaring across the gym at Taylor County Middle School. This may not seem like a typical P.E. class, but the new archery program seems to be right on target. Paul McQueary, a Taylor County Middle School physical education teacher, said the archery program started in his classroom in October 2002 "offers students an alternative to traditional sports and an opportunity to participate for those who may not be the stereotypical athlete.” Across the state, middle schools arc adding the “Archery: On Target for Life” program to their curricula with the endorsement of the Kentucky Department of Education and the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Taylor County Middle School is one of the only schools in this area to have the archery program. Schools are also discovering one big benefit of the program: a change in the students. Attendance is higher on archery days than others. “The students here at Taylor County Middle School are really excited about archery. We have about 700 students enrolled here in the sixth through eighth grades. I have taught archery to about 200 so far. Students rotate through my P.E. class every six weeks so I teach the unit six times a year.” said McQueary. A boost in self-confidence has been an unexpected benefit of archery said McQueary. Students who may never have excelled in P.E. class are now succeeding in archery. That's because archcry is an individualized sport in which students can sec immediate success and improvement said McQueary. It focuses more on discipline and concentration than physical ability and it’s bringing shy students “out of their shells." The archery program was created in 2001 by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Kentucky Department of Education. It started with 22 Kentucky schools and now there are more than 90 schools involved. The two-weck unit teaches the students history in archery, techniques, mental concentration. equipment, self-improvement and safety. Students are also

required to take exams as well as complete open-response essay questions about archery. The unit fits into the curriculum requirement for Kentucky schools and will eventually be included on the end of the year state tests. Instructors, like McQueary, are required to be certified by the National Archery Association. This certification is obtained through a 12-hour training program. The schools are equipped with bows, arrows, bulls-eye targets and an arrow-resistant net to allow the students to shoot in the gymnasium. According to McQueary, the equipment that Taylor County uses is top of the line and can be individualized for each student. “The goal of this program is to teach concentration, competition and sportsmanship." said McQueary. "It’s a tournament sport that is not focused on killing." Eventually McQueary would like to see the middle school start an archery team that would be treated just like a basketball, football or any other sports team. However, due to proposed budget cuts this goal could be a long way off. McQueary and one of his students. Erica Willis, a seventh grader, are featured in an archcry article in the January/Fcbruary 2003 issue of "3-D & Bowhunting Times Magazine." The magazine is an international publication with 18.000 readers in the U.S.. Canada and several foreign nations. Kentucky is currently the only state in the country that has an archery program but representatives from 39 states have shown interest. Similar programs are being developed in Alabama. Arkansas. Illinois and West Virginia..

Also, be aware that when your top eccentric is running slightly ahead on the draw your bow will require a nocking point slightly lower than it would have otherwise. arrow is obliged to travel in a very slight downward arch so your nocking point must be placed higher on the bowstring in order for the nock to end up level with the point to exit level. It seems an obvious choice to me between having a shaft that will interfere with the arrowrest by 2 thousandths of an inch or one that will clear the arrowrest by that amount. This is precisely why for many years I have intentionally set the top eccentric ahead slightly on every bow I have serviced or built. At the factory I personally constructed hundreds of extra-cost, oneof-a-kind custom bows in this manner with only continual compliments resulting. It is also uncanny how many times someone has later asked me why their nocking point ended up lower than the more typical "eighth inch high above square " as they simultaneously bragged that the bow "shoots so well they cannot believe it. " Likewise, on other occasions I was able to resolve arrowrest wear and arrowshaft anodizing stripe wear complaints caused by the shaft being forced down onto the arrowrest during the shot due to the top eccentric running late. Advising them to slightly lengthen the buss cable controlling the top eccentric by removing as little as one complete twist of a fiber cable (or adding one twist to the other) has worked every time. Each reported back that not only had the wearing to the arrowrest support ceased but that their sight settings were essentially unaffected. Yes, even steel cabling can be altered in this manner, however never with more than with one full turn in either direction. All steel cabling has a natural clockwise twist so removing a half turn or full turn counterclockwise will make it slightly longer as well as counterclockwise changes making them shorter. When new steel cables are installed they are often incidentally assembled with a half or full twist in either direction so this alteration limit is certainly within normal usage parameters. If more than one full turn is required to change a "running late" top eccentric into one "running ahead " it can be easily rectified by simply removing and then reversing them. Reversed, the one that was too long is then controlling the top eccentric to allow it to forge ahead on the draw. This technique is designed to insure that anytime the positions of the 2 eccentrics cannot be confirmed as absolutely identical it is wiser to intentionally err in the more acceptable direction of having the top one slightly ahead. How much "ahead" can only be a personal judgment call and I submit that anytime the top eccentric has been determined to be slightly ahead and the bump-bump feel cannot be detected there is nothing tangible

Watch for these Archery Basics Things to know before you buy your archery equipment, what type of archery do you wish to shoot first? I mean indoor archery, target archery, and field archery or 3-D archery, besides NAA rules. NFAA rules. 3-D rules. Bowhunting or just hobbyist. You should know what type of bow you wish to shoot, compound. recurve or maybe a longbow. You need to know what peak draw weight bow you need to shoot your styles of archery for that bow use and you need to know your draw length. You need this information before you can look for a matched set of arrows for your draw length and bow draw weight for your set up to shoot consistently. That is way it is best, if you can. lake archery lessons before you buy any archcry equipment. It is very hard to find good information on archery shooting and when you do what type of archcry your interest is in? The general public thinks of archcry as a bow and arrow, any bow and arrow, not what type of archery. You need to lean, good shooting form with a light draw weight bow, generally a recurve. You need to learn how to shoot with fingers and a minimum of accessories. Learning how to aim without a sight will help you team shooting form and timing. You can always add accessories to help you be more consistent in shooting a good group, which is arrows close together in the target. Most archers usually get into archery through a friend. They generally shoot their friend's style of archery and their type of equipment. When you get your own archery equipment you need to check a few things out. Make sure it is the equipment you ordered and the arrows arc right by the chart or your experience. All shops use the Easton arrow chart; this chart is 98% accurate but is not perfect. I'm assuming it is not a hunting bow that you can get locally, but you still need to check everything. You need to brace your bow and check the draw weight you plan to shoot it al. Is it comfortable for you. good shooting form is not known by all? Check the brace height and the tiller of both limbs; Easton has brochures on equipment setup (www.caslonarchery.com). There is no real golden rule, use the manufacturers recommendations and standards. 95% of all archery equipment in the US is sold for hunting. Local archery shops can only stay in business by selling bowhunting equipment with lots of accessories. Shop space is very expensive, so it is hard for them to take up space with target or competitive archcry equipment that does not sell any volume. I have bows 35 years old I could still shoot. If you take good care of your equipment it will last a long time. Locally you may find a distributor who sells out of their house, low overhead and affiliated with a local archery club. These distributors are generally long time archers who know howhard it is to buy other than hunting archery equipment. This has been a dilemma in archery distribution for as long as 1 can remember. To find one of these in house sellers you have to have some contact with an archery club already. Now how can a retail archery shop stay in business if these in house archery shops take business from them? Mail order archcry equipment has the same effect. At this point we just need to find someplace to get what we need or went to start shooting. If you do buy from an in house seller they will give you help in getting started. If you had to order by mail, it is up to you to read the material and try to get help and a location to practice. In archery you learn by doing, it is a life sport with a long-range goal. Tuning is what you hear about first when you are trying so hard to improve your shooting or should 1 say scoring. Use a bow' stringer to brace a recurve bow. Checking the bow. look at brace height, tiller (upper & low er) and bow string alignment, plus screw mounts in the bow riser for sights and stabilizers. Both recurve and compound bows have a draw weight adjustment. A recurve bow has a 10% draw weight adjustment and the compound bow has about 15 lb. draw weight adjustment. This can be confusing for a beginner and is generally not used by them. This can help you in finding a comfortable draw weight in shooting. It can also be used to get better arrow flight, a better spine match. Just remember ifyou change your bows draw weight it can change your arrow spine requirements. Hopefully you have a good basic setup: matched arrows (no vanes [feathers]), good arrow rest (centered) with good arrow clearance, nocking point on the bowstring (fingers or release) always follow the manufactures recommendations. Your brace height, tiller and nocking point location needs to be in writing for future reference as a starting point to retune. If your arrow porpoises, end of arrow going up and down; it is an adjustment of the nocking point that will help. All archery shops have an arrow chart that have the draw weight and draw length for longbows, recurve and compound bows. These charts will give you 2 or 3 arrow size options for your bow and draw length, always start with the heaviest spine; it is more forgiving. Feathers for fletching is best for beginners, more stability. There is a thing called the "archers paradox", that is the arrow shaft flexes out of the bow as the bowstring pushes it into 73

Bits of Archery History •The use of the bow and arrow can be traced back over 30.000 years. By the time writing was invented archcry was an integral part of society everywhere in the world. We think of the bow and arrow as a primitive weapon. The one thing for sure and can not be debated in that it is a weapon. The bow and arrow was the only accurate long range weapon man had available, artillery. They could shoot an arrow over 200 yards and hit a man at 100 yards. • During WWII. world war two, a monument was found in North Africa to an archer for shooting an arrow with a hand held bow the distance of 918 yards. It was thought to be in error but it was not’ The Turks had archcry equipment comparable to modem bows up until the early 1960‘s. Their average war bow pulled 130 to 150 lbs. • The Egyptians were the first famous archers in written history. They shot their bows from chariots. War and hunting for food with this weapon was part of their life. • Some Asian archers shot their bows from horseback using a thumb ring as a release 1000 years ago. Because of the bowstring movement with this release the arrow had to be shot from the right side of the bow for a right handed archer. Just think how long did it take someone to work this out. so it worked properly. Did bowers openly experiment or were little things found out by accident.

•Timing is everything. The English longbow gained in reputation during the Hundred Years war with France, because of a rainy day. The English were in northern France setting up for the battle of Crecy. The France knowing of the English longbow hired some Persian mercenaries with their crossbows to defeat the English. The bowstrings were made of a linen in those days. The English longbow bowstrings were waterproof because of their environment. But the Persian crossbow strings, being from a dry area. were not. The crossbows came apart in the wet weather and the English won because of this advantage. • The Mongol army was never defeated in Europe or Asia, except in their effort at Japan. Knowing of the coming invasion, a Japanese bowyer had a vision of a bow with a short bottom limb that could be shot to the right or the left from horseback. He made the bow and distributed them to their archers.He became famous when the Mongols were defeated. The fact that 2/ 3’s of the Mongol fleet was suck or lost in a monsoon was never considered. Ceremonial archery is active today in Japan, called kyudo. •There were two American Indian tribes that had outstanding bows. The Seminoles in Florida and the Eskimos. It has been reported that the Seminole's arrows penetrated the Spanish armor, it has been reported that an Eskimo arrow had total penetration on a polar bear. The Eskimo bow was laminated with whale bone and drift wood, but not glued. The Eskimo bow was tied together. You could

tell each tribe from the knot pattern on their bows. Most American Indians were great stokers and tracers because they had to get close to their game for a good hit. Arrow heads were barbed with a strong shaft so the arrow would not come out of the animal easily. If you have ever seen a deer hit with an arrow that is protruding, they will nib against trees or role on the ground to remove the arrow. This would drive the arrow deeper until the damage would kill the animal. It is said an animal would have to be followed for up to three days before you could reap your rewards. They were very efficient in their method of hunting and had no reason to improve their bows. • Archery was artillery in the past and it was outmoded in war by gunpowder used in a canon. Archery was kept alive in the western world by the English pride in their weapon. If you look at tennis and amateur archery tournaments you will see the participates wearing mostly white. This is an English tradition started over 600 years ago. The English nobility not wishing to associate with the common people invented the word amateur for their archery competitions. Their meaning was “one who does not work for a living”. Which left them competing with each other and not someone with dirty hands. It worked for them but the meaning is different today. In fact there arc really no amateur athletes in international competition today. The modern Olympics redefined the word amateur for their games. Today you do not have to be an "amateur" to compete in the Olympic Games.

The reason for th is difference in alignment is oscillation of the bowstring created by the release method. With an arrow on the bowstring check fletching alignment for clearance as it passes the arrow rest. The arrow docs not change rotation until it leaves the bowstring. What you see as alignment with an arrow nocked in relationship to passing the arrow rest, is as it will pass. Rotate the arrow nock to get the best arrow rest clearance out of the bow into free flight. You can put talcum powder on your riser and arrow rest and shoot an arrow, see if any of the powder is disturbed. New archers what to know what the things are sticking out at different directions form the bow. stabilizers. The

stabilizer is an extended weight that acts as an anti-torque rod. Your bow has three axes’ of torque that are centered at the pivot point (hand contact with the bow grip). The obvious center stabilizer effects two axes' of torque. The “V" bars, also stabilizers; affect all three axes’ of torque plus they act somewhat as a counterbalance. I feel base limb stabilizers act as shock absorbers more than anti-torque rods. You have to experiment to see what works for you, there is a point of no return; you can have to many stabilizers adding to much weight to the bow. Sighting is always a main interest; it helps you hit your target. We assume wrongly that score improvement is a bettering of our archcry skills. Most release shooters arc aiming poorly but their equipment compensates. They seem to what to release only when the sight is dead

free flight. That is the flexing or archer's paradox is the arrow spine. You need a good arrow rest that gives your arrow solid support and good clearance. The nocking point is to be set at above 90 degrees from the arrow rest for a release shooter and 5/8" above 90 degrees for finger shootings. This is just a starting point for you; adjust the nocking point until there is no porpoise of the arrow in flight. The nocking point is a balance center of trust between the limbs. It sure seems like a lot of sluff just to get to this point. I always check the centering of the arrow rest for fingers and release. The release aid alignment is easiest; with the bowstring bisecting both limbs and the grip, the bowstring should also bisect an arrow nocked and on the arrow rest. With the bowstring aligned the same as above, the bowstring should be to 74

center. This creates a punch of the release and a sudden movement at release enhanced by tension created by aiming so hard. And the arrow does not hit where the sight was on the target at release. If you execute properly, there is movement of the sight, visually on the target, as you try to aim. This movement is inherent and consistent for each archer. This movement will lessen as we leant and practice, it may never stop completely. It docs not have to with good execution; the timing is coordinated with the movement to develop consistency. Trying to stop this natural movement creates tension and movement at release. If the arrow does not hit where the sight was at release you have changed something in your shooting sequence. No! You may not feel it, but it was there. Your arrows will tell you what you did and how consistent you are shooting. Always check your arrow strike pattern to see what you need to correct for improvement of consistency. The sight extension is related to this visual sight movement on the target. 1 fyou move the sight closer to the target the movement remains the same and becomes less in relation to the target face. But you must be able to sight on target for your longest target shot (lowest setting), so this longest distance limits the movement of the sight outward. The closer the distance of the archcry round, the farther you can move the sight extension out. If you use a sight you must always aim at the center, never aim off to compensate a poor setting, move the sight. Archers feel they had a good shot and the arrow hits high. So the archer aims lower on the target face on the next shot, this never works; the name of the game is consistency. Move the sight; the sight is a front anchor for proper alignment to your target. There are at least four way of aiming without a sight on the bow: instinctive, gapping, point of aim and stringwalking. I feel new archers should experience all styles of archer shooting or at least more than one, before they buy any archery equipment. Few archers shoot using a finger release of the bowstring. It is not easy, most are never thought how; it is not inherent. Your mind feels the pressure of the bowstring and you pull the fingers away to release the bowstring. This pulls the bowstring away from your face and the bowstring returns to your bow arm, it shoots the arrow but at what expense? You must learn the use the pressure of the bowstring to release, just stop holding it: relax your fingers as you pull with you drawing elbow. Your release hand must stay by your face. for proper alignment to your target. Most archers start shooting with a release aim, because you can shoot better scores with less effort. IF NEW ARCHERS SHOOT GOOD SCORES THEY WILL STAY IN ARCHERY - BULL!!!! I see archers shooting less proficient styles for the challenge and enjoyment of a good shot. Why do you think traditional archery is growing today? If you have one thousand shooters at a national tournament, there are not a lot of first place winners. We need more grass roots shooters that shoot for the fun of it. It is hard to find a compound bow to shoot fingers with and it is getting harder. Manufacturers assume finger shooter will shoot a recurve bow and release shooters will shoot a compound bow. The latest compound bow designs are shorter and shorter, because it does not make any difference with a release aid; and the bows shoot faster. It is not easy to find a place to try different styles of shooting to find something you enjoy doing. If someone told you archery was easy, go back and slap them. Shooters will stay in archery if they are having fun. Hitting the target is nice but they want to shoot on their terms and times. No one should shoot just for a good score, but to see how will they are shooting. Practice is the place to experiment, learn and improve. The mental game of archery begins with the first shoot. The execution of one good shot is a sequence of events until the arrow is in the target. You must consciously think about every step in the sequence in the same order to complete one good shot. Archery is a long range effort depending on your frequency of practice, three times a week is helpful. You must concentrate on shooting one good shot, do

not try to figure out what is going wrong. Watch how well your arrows group or if the arrows arc all in the same location of the target. If the arrows are all over the target, it is obvious you are doing something different on each shot. Once you are shooting a group with your shots, work on the execution and timing of the shot. You must learn to execute and control a good shot before you can learn to aim. Aiming is just a step in your shooting sequence, not as important as execution and timing of that shot. You must practice proper shooting form to train the sub couscous mind. That is it becomes so familiar that you do not have to think about controlling each step. Some times after a good shot you will think to yourself. I do not remember thinking about that step. But you know it was right, you felt it was right. Now you are ready the think about fine tuning your shooting equipment, which is another story. Use the couscous mind as a check over the controlling of the sub couscous. Your sub-couscous can do many tasks at one time; hopefully what you trained it to do. The couscous mind can think of one thing at a time. But the couscous mind is always active when you are awake. If you do not give the couscous mind something to think about, it will find something to think about and it can override the sub-couscous. Concentration is letting the sub-couscous perform its training with a couscous checking of tasks. You can feel that something is not right, let down, do not shoot and start over. NEVER SHOOT A BAD SHOT IN PRACTICE, it does not train your sub couscous mind properly. In a tournament you do the best you can. Tournaments are to learn what you need to practice on.

FOC, forward of center; this is the balance point of a completed arrow shaft compared to the measured center of the arrow shaft. The balance point, because of the point weight; is always forward of center and the reason for the archers paradox. Generally 1 look for an aluminum arrow to be about 7% FOC and a carbon or aluminum/aluminum to be about 11% FOC. When you change the FOC of an arrow, you change the spine of that shaft; which changes the arrow strike pattern at your target. If you change anything on your equipment or in your execution of the shot, it will change your arrow strike pattern at the target. If your arrows group, move the sight. You will hear about "target panic". I do not wish for you to study what target panic is. If you do not know, leave well enouph alone. If you understand a lack of control of a shot, what can you do? Lets just say it is a lack of confidence and/or a lack mental control, poor execution or timing. It cannot be overcome by concentration or willpower. It can be a lack of training and a working to hard at shooting a good score. The cure is a building of confidence with better execution of one good shot at a time. Sounds great but willpower at regulation distance is not enough! Get up close. Believe it or not when you get to 5 yards you feel you cannot miss and you have better control and execution of the shot. Archers keep trying to overcome the problem at regulation distances and get frustrated, move up closer and try it again.

Psychological Skills 1 (will help you control and effect goal setting) You need to have some tournament experience so you know what goals to set for yourself. Your goals should be geared to improving or developing needed skills conditioning and/or attitude improvement. Improving your tournament results can be helped by good goal setting skills to enhance performance and build self confidence. Goal setting is a clarification of proposes improving performance and quality of practice. Goal setting can be confusing as a tool for archers. Do not set too many goals too soon, if you set goals this is a commitment to acceptable accomplishment. Do not set vague goals that have no conclusion. You are responsible to create an environment to facilitate goal attainment and be willing to modify unrealistic goals. There arc task goals and result goals. Most archers think of result goals; "I want

Go back to the basics and retrain your sub couscous to execute that one good shot. You may have to do that one good shot 60 times in a tournament, but it is still one good shot at a time. Practice shooting at a blank butt, no target up close; execution and timing, feel that shot. You must learn execution of the shot before you can concentrate on aiming at anything. Practice shooting and aiming up close, memorizing the visual sight picture and the feeling of the shot this will build confidence and consistency. I f you have trouble in the next tournament, continue shooting up close; it takes time and effort. There is an easy way, change something or add something. This is a temporary solution, it will come back. Everyone likes a winner. No one remembers second place. I can tell you no one remembers first place for very long. You must shoot against yourself and do the best you can. score will take care of itself. If you follow tournament results, you know what a good score is! Never shoot to win or feel you arc better than other shooters. you just shoot your best and if everyone shoots their best than the best score for that day will win. Enjoy you effort al archery and share it with other archers by going to tournaments. If you say I'm not good enough, you are missing a great learning experience. The best shooters are at some of these tournaments; why not sec how they arc shooting and setting up their archery equipment. If you can just shoot your average in a tournament, you are above average. Effort over time will improve your

enjoyment of archcry and change your goals. And it is best if you set long-range and short-range goals for yourself. In archery you learn by doing. Archery has more to offer than just shooting of the bow and arrow. We need promoters and officials for our archery organizations and tournaments. We need judges to run our tournaments and we need teachers and coaches of our sport. Archcry standards or traditional rules and protocol break down at the local level, because of lack of experience. Archers do not feel a need to use standard rules and regulations. They are just shooting with their friends. Every organization has rules and regulations, plus traditional protocol established over time. You have standard rules and scoring for each archcry round. You have standard rules on styles of competition for each organization. You have divisions by age and sex to have fair competition. You have rules you make for local tournaments with friends Why cannot archers, who share a great sport; use standard rules and regulations for all archers. It is to hard, you have to learn. you just want to shoot; what difference could it made? Archcry is a sport that gives back with the effort you put into it. We should take pride in our sport, as diverse as it is; because it is all archery. We need to show respect for our sport, as wc respect each other and our archery history. Find your interest in the modem sport of archery and have the time of your life, because archery is a life sport to share with all.

to win". “1 want to make the Olympic Team". This is focusing on the results you would like, not how to get there! This result goal is not really under your control. You need to set task goals. Like shooting your personal best in a tournament, even though your score is not the highest in your division and style. Task goals arc totally within your control; I will concentrate on every shot:, “I will maintain a positive attitude, even after a poor shot". Task goals concentrate on the task of shooting. physical conditioning or attitude. You do not worry about the results, you focus instead only on the task at hand. To set good task goals, just ask yourself “What will it take for me to become a better archer?". You need short-term and long-term goals. Long-term goals do not have to be realistic, just feasible. Short-term goals have to be realistic and attainable. Suggestions for measuring goal progress include using a point system to record how

well you are achieving your goals. recording feedback in notebooks or training logs and/or developing a goal contract with your coach. Goal contracts should include a listing of the goals as well as how and when the goals will be measured, but not too often. For one of our JOAD shooters a short-term goal may be to score with every arrow or to keep all scoring arrows within the blue ring. You need to challenge yourself to improve.

Get Out of Trouble Quickly by Terry Wunderle

When 1 was watching the NAA National Championship I noticed that one of my top archers was slipping on the scoreboard. I went over and watched her form and observed that she was shooting a “soft shot", (she did not have as strong of an explosion as usual.) She had added nearly two seconds to her normal shooting rhythm. I called her over and said, “Quit aiming so much! Trust your form! Take a second off your shooting time. Move your pin first because your next shots will be a little left.” She followed my instructions and shot a tight group in the ten ring. She went on to win the championship. This is a common occurrence with many archers. They practice with a particular rhythm but when the tournament starts, they try Io fine tunc their aiming. This adds several seconds to the shot sequence and usually results in a breakdown in form. The next time you find yourself getting into trouble, try speeding up the rhythm and shoot a stronger shot. All archers get into trouble at one time or another. The trick is to get out of trouble quickly and minimize the damage. Over 90% of the problems come from the bow arm. Look there first. If the bow arm explodes straight at the target with the same amount of force, nearly every arrow shot will be exactly where the pin was located. I admit this statement over simplifies the situation, however, it is over 90% correct. Pay attention to the bow arm and see if it is reacting the same. If it isn’t, what is it doing differently. Most likely it is falling away to the low right or low left (depending on individual form). What causes this? Usually one of two things. The most common one being a decrease in back pressure with the release arm. This causes the bow arm to weaken and not

The other problem that occurs is the archer does not explode through the shot with the bow arm and just lets it drop or collapse. An archer can make a lot of mistakes in form and usually get away with some of them. The one mistake you can not get away with is a bad bow arm. Another common problem is when the archer is nervous and has a lot of tight muscles. RELAX! Before you shoot, take

a deep breath and let the air out slowly while relaxing your muscles. Do this a couple of times, then address the target. Remember, extra tight muscles will effect the reaction of the bow and the impact of the arrow. When trouble arises, do not panic. You have to stay in control of the situation. The greatest asset that an archer has is the brain. Stay calm and identify the problem so it can be corrected.

From the Senior Corner By Joe Baucrnfeind Welcome to the WINTER version of the Senior Comer. I don’t know where you all live, but up here in the Northeast, we’re having a real winter for a change. I'm not complaining, mind you, I just wanted you to know that Old Man Winter is still alive and kicking. Most years we’ve been able to go through the whole winter, hardly missing a day on the mountain bike but this year I think it’s going to be on the rack for awhile. The cross country skis have come down from the rafters, been dusted and waxed and are doing their duty after a year of non use. The snow has been staying dry and deep enough for skiing due to the longest cold snap we've had in a long time and my retired buddies and I are out there at 8AM just about every day. If you think it would be funny to see a bunch of old geezers out there on mountain bikes, you should see us on those skinny cross country skis. I fell so much the other day, I had a St. Bernard with a keg of brandy on his collar following me. hoping to make a rescue. 1 made it back though, without his help and we all had a good laugh about it over a bagel and a cup of coffee ( not the dog ). 1 sure would miss winter if I did moved to Florida. Speaking of Florida, they evidently don’t have sun and temperature in the 70’s all of the time either. I went to the ASA tn Gainesville this past weekend and almost froze. Sunday morning was bad. Hard rain and 42 degrees is not prime archery weather. My hat is off to those archers who toughed it out that morning. I had a good tent over my head to stay dry but it sure was cold. As the vendors started packing it in to get some warmth. I kept moving my table up the line to get closer to the crowd, finally winding up next to the T.R.U Ball booth. We compete for the same business but the vendors at these shoots are like a traveling family, meeting and greeting every other week in a variety of venues. The guys from T.R.U. Ball were kept busy during the awards giving out lots and lots of contingency checks and I started trying to figure a way to get involved in that kind of marketing, at least in some way a one man operation could afford. I’ve come up with an awards idea and with the help of some people who’s insight into archery I trust, I think I'm ready to give it a try. One of the people who’s council I sought was my favorite editor 78

This is a total of 16 shoots for the year that will be in play. Zenith Archery Products will start out the 2003 Pot O’ Gold with a $500 ante + $50 for the ASA shoot in Gainesville, which is already over. and increase the size of the pot by $50 after each shoot, if the prize is not won. This could result in the Pot O’ Gold being worth $1300 by the end of the season, if no one is lucky or skilled enough to win it. If the Pot is won during the 2003 season, a new Pot O’ Gold will start at a S50 level and increase by $50 after each shoot. The $500 ante will be put up by Zenith only at the start of each archery season. Any money remaining in the Pot O’ Gold after the final shoot, will be awarded to a Zenith Release shooter, by holding a drawing that would include all archers who competed for the Pot O’ Gold during the 2003 season. A minimum of award of $100 will be guaranteed by Zenith Archery for the final drawing. Eligible archers will include both Pros. Semi-Pros and open shooters and will be based on the following criteria: Professional archers, both men and women, shooting in any of the Pro divisions of NFAA, IBO or ASA or in the Semi-Pro divisions of the IBO and ASA will be eligible, as long as there arc a total of at least 20 archers posting complete scores in their division at the tournament being shot. ■Open shooters, both men and women, who are allowed to accept money prizes will be eligible as long as there are a total of at least 50 archers posting complete scores in their division at the tournament being shot. ■ In the tournaments where the pros and non-pros compete together in a THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

championship division the rule of 50 archers will apply. In tournaments that divide the open divisions into flights, archers in those divisions will be eligible as long as there arc at least 50 archers posting complete scores in that division. ■These minimum archer limits arc set to assure sufficient competition in any division, so that a division of only 4 or 5 archers, with one dominant shooter, would not he able to dominate the contest. The rules for entering the competition are as follows: There will be no need to register for the Pot O' Gold at each tournament, but to be eligible for the final drawing, you must go to the Pot O’ Gold page on the web site at svw sv.zenitharchcry.com, fill out and submit the form you will find there with your name, phone number and the tournament and division you will be shooting in. You svill receive conformation that your entry has been received by an e-mail reply from Zenith Archcry. If you DO NOT post a complete score in that division, at that tournament, or the division fails to reach the minimum number of shooters required, you svill need to go through the process again. If you DO shoot a complete score that meets the criteria listed above and is shosvn in the official published results for that tournament, you need not register again. Please do not submit an entry unless you are shooting a Zenith Release in one of the tournaments listed above, in a division you think svill have the required number of shooters. You must also include the names and phone numbers of three archers svho shot with you at the tournament and it is up to you to tell them that you are competing for the Pot O' Gold and shosv them your Zenith release. To verify that you shot the release in any tournament for which you are claiming the Pot O'Gold for winning your division, you must submit a second form to Zenith Archery with the same information as your original entry and the name of the tournament and division for which you are claiming the Pot. Once again, you must include the names and phone numbers of three archers who shot with you at the tournament and it is up to you to tell them that you are competing for the Pot O’ Gold and show them your Zenith release. You will have 1 week from the end of the tournament, in which to contact Zenith. Claims made after that time will be dis-allowed. The release you use must be made from all Zenith parts. Hybrids, such as releases using a Zenith head on another manufacturer’s handle will not be deemed eligible for the prize. Major home made modifications to the release will also not be allowed. Does anybody really know the total capabilities of the physical body when guided by the perfect pure thought of ultimate concentration? Think of all the great accomplishments in sports that were said to be "Impossible". Think of all the world records that were said to be set in stone, only to be broken later on down the road. How about all the stories of people surpassing what was thought to be physically impossible for a person of that stature, size and or gender. Someone said. "Imagine what you could accomplish if you didn't know your limitations? What about the elderly mother that lifts the car off of her son. in a moment of adrenaline rush when it was needed? We really don't know how powerful the human body is. or can become in moments of extreme stress, or life & death situations. We do know that the contradictory capabilities of our muscles is much greater that we would ever imagine or give them credit for. Our abilities to push. pull. jump, squeeze, throw, or run is much greater than we have ever probably come close to fully tapping. So...how do we go about unleashing this super power with in us. and how can we channel it to benefit us instead of letting it destroy us. There are two sides to every coin. With great power comes great responsibility, and that’s especially true here. Within each of us is the underlying ability to physically and mentally achieve more that we ever imagined. Once somebody actually does something that everyone never believed could be done., now that thing becomes possible...in EVERYONE’S mind, (or at least in the minds of the people who SAW it done) because, they saw it. Now it’s real, now you believe it can be done, and you might even believe YOU can do ii. Maybe not now. but some day. Here’s a perfect example: How hard do you think it is to hit an apple with an arrow. from 17 yards away....IN THE AIR ? In this case we're talking about instinctive shooting, no sights, no peeper, no release devices, no preset pre-shot distances, just you and the bow . an old traditional long bow, 1 might add. Yes, someone throws an apple up. you draw, release and hit it in mid flight. Pretty hot huh? That might give you an idea of how precise our mental computer can direct our body. That would create a belief about a

person’s instinctive ability to judge the position of the moving apple in relation to the speed and trajectory of the arrow to cause them to meet at the same spot in time and space. Imagine the mental calculations that have to take place with in the brain to make this happen. That's great, but the mind and body are capable of much more. What if 1 said I saw the same person...from the same distance... with the same bow and arrow...hit a QUARTER in mid-air? NOW ’YER TALK’IN. You’re talking belief change If you saw THIS you would have a whole new set of beliefs about how precise a human mind and body can be with a bow and arrow. Are you beginning to get the picture of the capabilities of the body when directed by pure concentration? No one up until now would ever believe this could be done...until it’s done. So now you believe that this feat is capable of being accomplished, and maybe you could do the same with lots of practice. This is just to illustrate what the mind and body can accomplish with enough practice, and perseverance. Now let's go one step further. Using a flat blunt tipped arrow, have someone stand about 17 yards in front of you, and. throw up an aspirin...you got it. an aspirin. How hard would it be to hit this aspirin in mid air? It’s the same diameter as the arrow itself. Byron Ferguson, one of the top instinctive shooters in the world, did what I’ve just described. This was on the "American Shooter", a program on the "OLN Adventure channel" (see link below for web site). If I had not seen it in “Frame by frame" stop action, I would not have believed it either. He actually "Powders” this aspirin with a full 100% contact hit in mid-air from about 17 yards away. Then he proceeds to (with regularity) nail an 8 inch balloon from 150 yards away, once again totally instinctive with his lemon wood long bow. The reason J am mentioning these feats of accomplishment is to illustrate the capabilities of the mind to manipulate the body. far beyond what we have thought was the “Best that could be done". Your mind’s ability to control your body far surpasses what you believe you can do...UNTIL YOU DO IT! The purpose of this article is to get you to realize that there are no limits for you and your abilities except the limits you impose on yourself, in any area of your life. The more you raise your goals, the more you release yourself from self-imposed restrictions, and raise your degree of expertise. Just relax and get your conscious mind out of the way, and let your body do what it can do perfectly without you telling it what to do. You will be breaking your own records in no time!
