Greetings to all of you busy archers and tournament promoters. This year has taken on a spectacular beginning. We feature the Louisville Expo Championships in this issue. Sorry, it is a bit late. Next issue will carry the Vegas World Archery Festival and the NFAA Tulsa Indoor Championships and the International Field World Archery Championships. As you know we have many divisions and champions in each. We try to feature as many champions as possible each issue but have missed many in the past. At this time I am asking each of you to let me know if a world or national record has been achieved and if we haven't covered a deserving champion, please let me know and 1 will contact them. THE ISOLATOR QUIET, FAST, ACCURATE!
Dear Arlyne. Thanks for letting me share with you and your readers my NFAA Outdoor Championship experience. My real love for archery, and what keeps me shooting today, is the NFAA Outdoor Field Round. There is something about being outdoors in the woods on a nice 75 degree day with the sun ('titering through the trees, seeing nature's thing all around you all the while bearing down at a target on a perfectly manicured course and nailing one dead center The challenge of hitting that little bull’s-eye at 70 or 80 yards is pretty special. It still amazes me after 26 years of shooting how accurate you can be with a bow and arrow. Add to that the camaraderie of two or three other people taking turns shooting all Fighting the same elements and to me. you have the ultimate shooting experience. The best tournament in the world for the field round is the NFAA Outdoor Nationals. It is the supreme test of man and equipment. 5 days of shooting. 6-7 hours each day. 476 arrows, distances from 20 feel to 80 yards, uphills, downhills, sidehills, rain, and wind and everybody's favorite- mosquitoes. And on top of everything else, the level of competition so close that one arrow can be the difference between w inning and losing. What a week!!!! Winning this Championship has always been my number one goal and dream After finishing 2nd by one point and 3rd by two points, along with several other top five finishes I thought I'd never get that Silver Bowl Fortunately. 1999 was the year everything went my way. Every time I had a rough shot or target. I came right back with a great shot or larger My equipment worked perfectly all week long. My sight marks didn’t change aclick. I needed every point as it turned out. only winning by 3. Rus Weatherby and Scott Turner pushed me all the way. The day that stands out the most to me was Wednesday. Rus 20’ed an 80 yarder with a broken sight rod. He then went to get his backup. He missed a couple points after that setting it up. When we finished that day I had a 556 and thought I pul a few points on him only to find out we had tied. Unbelievable!! I knew then 1 was going to have to really shoot strong to win. But that’s what the Outdoor Nationals is all about. Thai’s what makes it so special to win. I am very grateful to have won what may have been the last five day Nationals ever and the last one of the century, ft goes to show that if you work hard enough for long enough, a person can accomplish anything. Never forget your dreams! If it can happen to me it can happen to anyone!

Il's 2000. and ils time! Tailor Maid. ...no that's not the name for a maid service or a clothing shop. Il is the company name for Marv Long's bow string manufacturing company. Man1 has been in the bow string manufacturing business a long time and his strings are the best I've ever seen. About six months ago Marv called and wanted to know if AWC needed any strings as he would be happy to supply them. I had never met Marv and didn't know anything about him or his company but I kept the note with our conversation and his phone number. This past winter found us helping out a 16 year old boy scout named Ben that needed a community service project to complete his final requirement for the rank of Eagle Scout Archers Who Care's name was given to Ben and he contacted us to see if he could take on the task of repairing. cleaning and inventorying all of the equipment. I met with Ben and his family. Ben is one of the neatest boys I've had the pleasure to meet in a long time. Ben has learned from his dad. wood working skills and has built a few bows, naps his own flint heads and builds his own arrows from scratch. We talked about the Eagle Scout project and about what Archers Who Care stands for and it's involvement with the physically challenged children. We put together a plan that would allow Ben to structure his community project. He submitted his project to the Boy Scout Council and it was approved so Ben and the other scouts he would need to get involved could begin working on the inventory, repair & maintenance the 150+ bows on hand. A call was placed to Marv to see if his offer of Six months earlier was still good. Truthfully. I felt bad as I never expected we would need the number of strings we did. so I offered to pay for any number he felt was reasonable. And I was concerned that he would be able to build that number of strings in such a short limeframe. Well, Marv was true to his word. His generosity and the beautiful strings arrived earlier than expected. Each string length was grouped and color coded for easy identification. I'd like to take the time to publicly thank Marv 56
and to brag on the quality of his strings. They arc the finest continuous loop strings I've seen in the40 years I've been in archery. These are the kind of strings you use on a compound or recurve bow. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Tailor Maid strings to anyone. Jerry & Bobbie from Valley Traditional Archery in Colorado and Dave. Pete & the crew from PSE in Tucson, AZ helped with a lot of the other items. It is this kind of willingness and caring that makes all the difference in the world. As I continue to write about the children and their day-to-day challenges. Everyday each of us has challenges from one end of the spectrum to the other. This month I'd like to leave you with something I've read and believe in. Maybe it will help in your day-to-day and even your shooting. It reads. Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what other people think, say. or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is. we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. Moving on... As I write this, it is my last day at a job I' ve worked al for over 16 years and in an industry I've grown up with over the past 40 years. Yesterday. I made a living in the world of computers. Tomorrow. I will be in the log home business. Fulfilling a long time dream. The attitude I have each and everyday will help steer and mold me and my family's success in this new adventure. Believe me when I say...I understand and acknowledge the importance that a positive altitude has on one's life. The Cecelia Hendrix Story “Circle Unbroken” By Gene Grodzki Her smile is radiant. Her voice has (he sweet and soft twang you might expect from a gal living in Winston Salem. North Carolina. She has deep green eyes that (ouch you. Who is this delightful southern belle? Cecelia Hendrix is a Pro Archer, a Mother, a Friend and above all an Inspiration. This is her story. Her love of Archer)’ runs very deep. She has bow hunted, shot Field. Outdoor. Indoor and the 3-D circuit for over twenty years and has shot as a Pro for six years. Looking al her picture, you would ne\er guess she has six grandchildren. She has a loving thirty-year-old son who lives in Nonh Carolina and a 29-year-old daughter who lives in Texas. She obviously married young. Like most of us who have shot for years she has gathered a close circle of Archery friends. Cecelia told me that going to shoots has as much to do with bonding with old and new friends as with competing - and she loves to compete. That wisdom rings tme. I asked what this story* was to be about and here is,what she told me. Cecelia described for you and me a circle. much like an arrow bent perfectly round, with the point touching the nock. To her. this circle represents connected things: The circle of life - a special onetime jinirncy. a circle of true friends and family, a circle of faith, and a circle of love - giving and receiving When not shooting Cecelia has given much of her time to helping special people Her chosen OTOfdssion was a School Teacher. She taught kids. Early on. she met and worked with a young boy who suffered from bladder cancer. This experience led her to become involved with helping terminally ill children. Cecelia had lost both her parents to cancer, so this seemed the thing to do. CecCha solicited funds for families devastated by our worst possible nightmare — a terminally ill child. She found pilots, known as “Angels with Wings" to fly special kids to Lake Lure in Ashville. North Carolina, a special camp where they could learn archery*, swim and play in a loving environment. Teaching a sick child to shoot and break balloons was a circle of love that gave - in both directions. Easton donated arrou s McDonalds helped with money and even details like helium tanks and balloons. Clubs and individuals donated bows and dollars and Cecelia gave of herself. After seeing children lose their hair to chemotherapy. Cecelia had her own lovely hair cut and donated to make hairpieces She was particularly moved by the unselfish acts of Hospice workers, who helped her get kids into the camp. Al the Hospice, families are taught how to cope with daily heartbreak, while still cooking meals and trying to run a home.

She modestly feels that teaching these kids to shoot, and her other deeds were a small but important part of the circle of love needed by the kids and their families. One day about 5 years ago. a long time friend, Pro Archer Susan Thompson of Douglasville Georgia, told Cecelia that her own husband. Claude, was diagnosed with cancer. The loving circle extended and Cecelia reached out her hands and heart to help and support. Prayers were said and fund raising was done but with great sadness the battle was lost. Sue was greatly moved by the unselfish love, support and giving from Cecelia and many others who offered emotional and financial help to her family.
CECELIA HENDRIX The story* continues: Four years ago Cecelia was handed a cross of her own to bear. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent extensive surgery*. Ginger Hopwood a shooter out of Douglasville. Georgia drove to the hospital to hold her hand as she was rolled into an eight-hour surgery. The circle continued. Her condition left her with a paralyzed right leg and no balance. A degenerative bone disease keeps her reliant on pain medication. Archery* was over but her archery friends were there. Bill Scott of Scott Archery personally rebuilt a wheelchair for her that he was able to get from a wheelchair archer named Aaron Cross from St. Cloud Minnesota. Susan Thompson, who leaned on Cecelia, so recently, now became her main source of strength. Susan was still dealing with a broken
heart over losing her husband but she reached out with both hands. The circle continued. Cecelia was no longer able to shoot, drive or work. Other operations followed. Disease has a way of changing things and she soon found herself single and w aking up alone each morning in a very empty house. With no way Ip go food shopping except by relying on neighbors and friends, life took on a whole new meaning. Money became very tight, very* quickly. Archery was out of the question but never out of her mind as the long days and nights of recovery passed by. Susan Thompson knew that Cecelia’s greatest wish was to be able to attend a few shoots and maybe compete again. Susan is a Top Pro. and recently won the title of "Champion of Champions" though the NFAA program. Susan thought it over and then dug deep She offered to take Cecelia to the Gainesville Florida shoot in February and then to the Vegas Shoot in March. They then went together to the ASA 3-D Shoot in Valdosta. Georgia. Cecelia was "on tour" and shooting again thunks to a great friend. Matthews Archery even set her up with a new bow. The logistics were difficult. Sue and Cecelia h ve in different states and the details were near impossible. Susan is a "Champion of Champions" with or without her bow. The circle continued. . I spoke at length with Cecelia in Vegas and asked why shooting was so important to her and she said. "If I do it just right— for the moments when I am concentrating on aiming. there are no worries, no pain— only the dot. It gives me pleasure for me to get into the shot and forget everything else.” She also said. “There is joy in watching other archers. Seeing a novice put together a great shot and giving an over the shoulder smile of satisfaction is as priceless as watching a top pro show off his perfect form. It is a ballet for those who know how to watch." How- true. 1 asked her goals and they arc simple yet lofty. She would like to teach kids to shoot from her wheelchair. She also dreams of competing in the Paralympic Games in Greece, in 2004. Lord willing she will make it. Back home, she has friends but none close enough or with time enough to rely on for dayto-day help. Her best friends. Sue Thompson and Kathy Caudle, live in Georgia and Alabama respectively - Cecelia lives in North Carolina. Cecelia enjoys the Internet and chatting on AOL with her friends. She spoke of Arlyne Rhode who she called a “tremendous source of faith". Darla Owens of

Ashville North Carolina whose own mother wrote a book called. “Say no io Cancer.” has been there for her. Bill Scott the owner of Scott Archery has been a generous and close friend. Not long after giving his time to fix Cecelia’s wheelchair. Bill became ill. He is currently in the hospital fighting his own battle. When will this end? Cecelia spoke kindly of so many special friends like Theresa & Rockic Decker, out of Pcnville. Indiana Jim Schulz, a great friend from Arizona is deeply involved with “Archers Who Care". Jim has done compassionate, wonderful things with sick and needy children. Jean Hartsell of Archery Promotions in Lawrenceville. Georgia has raised funds by selling archery charms. Brian Cain and his entire family made room in their home for Cecelia during a particularly low period. Unsolicited love. Some of the people our girl admires are Tim Strickland, who she called one of the best coaches in archery and Randy Ulmer. Pete Works. Jack Tyree and Ben Rogers. She loves kind and warm folks like Kathy Caudle. Becky Pearson. Michelle Ragsdale. Aletia Godfrey and Sarah Smith. She called her gal pals “monkeys" in a cute way. She said her "monkey” friends picked her and she is so proud. One particular angel was Betty Hendrix. Cecelia’s ex-mother-in-law. who saw and felt the pain and gave dearly of herself at a most critical time after one of the surgeries.

She told me she docs not even know all the people who have lent a hand, a smile, or a kind word. She did say that the folks at the ASA shoot in Valdosta. Georgia made their 3-D range accessible for her to compete from a golf cart. Archers helping Archers. She misses working in the yard doing gardening and seeing the garden go to weeds is painful. There is a place to shoot only ten minutes from her home called Forsyth Archcry with FITA. Field and Bow hunter ranges. The Hanes Community Center has a great indoor range and is not far away. The problem is she can’t get there w ithout a car and a taxi is difficult and expensive. This is Cecelia’s story based upon all I have learned from her and her dearest friends. The message she wanted to go out to you is the meaning of this special Circle, visible in her minds eye. Her circle is more than simply Archers helping Archers, and Friends helping Friends. It is the joy of giving - and of receiving unqualified love, without fear. It is learning not to look away when you see someone’s pain. She made it clear that this circle is not supposed to be made up of a small handful of people- but of all of us who are just brave enough to open our eyes and connect a little. The more people in or around the circle, the stronger the bond. Cecelia has been on both sides of the circle.

“The Adventure” By Stewart Bowman ] arrived at the San Jose Airport late Tuesday evening and after collecting the hundreds of pounds of stuff we archers need to perform our game with. I walked out of the Terminal and found our host .Jose’ Wedel, and my father Gil Bowman (who had arrived a half-hour ahead of me) waiting to pick me up. Juan drove us to our accommodations and helped us to get organized and then left for some badly needed rest. On Wednesday morning we went to the Tennis Club ( a large resort type club with 3 swimming pools. a bowling alley, many tennis courts and 3 restaurants) where we said hello to Ed and Linda Marten who had arrived ahead of us.

After renewing old friendships we went to the indoor range. approximately 100 yards from the restaurant and shot a few arrows. As the day went on. archers from South and Central America filtered in. plus a bunch of Americans and a couple from Canada. This shoot is one of the friendliest groups I have ever met so it was hard to shoot with all the interruptions for hugs and kisses.U love South America!) On Thursday it was the official Practice day and as this is a Registered F1TA STAR we all had to dress up like house painters in out white shirts, but we looked good!!. By the end of the day all the competitors had arrived and were ready to compete. We all gathered at the bar and swapped stories and drank some "training fluid” before retiring to rest up for the big day ahead. On Friday we shot a 60 arrow 18 meter F1TA round and then in the evening we all boarded a bus arranged by Juan and went to one of the local "Tipiro" restaurants and had a fantastic meal of Costa Rican style food with the average feast costing abut S6.00 US including drinks. On Saturday morning we jumped out of bed (maybe crawled would be more honest) and shot the second qualification round. While wc enjoyed lunch the club members set up the elimination schedule and then we returned to the range to shoot the Team Event where I am proud to say. our US team of Bryan McNielly. Frank Pearson and myself won after a couple of very close wins against Mexico and then Guatemala. In the recurve category our U.S. Team of Ed Eliason. Joe McGlynn and Randall Turner (aka Pee Wee) took the honors. After this spirited competition (which entails much yelling and screaming by the spectators) we took off our whites and got cleaned up for a Dinner Party at the house of Juan and Roxanna Wedel. Barrera from EL Salvador and again El Salvlador won. I think it is time for us to find out their secret as they showed us how to shoot at this tournament!

needed, and then Juan took us on a tour of his house and separate indoor archcry range, which offers 30 meters with a full glass front wall facing his yard which must have over 60 large trees and plants that Juan and his beautiful wife. Rosanna have planted over the years with seed from around the world. In the front yard there is a complete 90 meter range set up for practice and a vied of some of Costa Rica's most beautiful mountains. After more stories and hugs&kisscs. we took the bus back to the Tennis Club and rested up for the elimination round to come. Sunday morning after a group breakfast we started the eliminations where I only made it to the second round before coming up against Alberto Balcazar. who put me into the spectators seats with a solid round. In the final round in men's compound it wasJorge Jiminez from El Salvador against our own Frank Pearson and they came to the final shot for Jorge who needed a 10 (inner ring) to win and he held for a long time and then put his shaft into the X and became the champion. He has been in the top 3 places for the last 4 years at this shoot and his turn finally came. In the men's recurve it came down to Ed Eliason (USA)

After photos and congratulations, we cleaned up and went to the dining room for an Awards Banquet and had another great meal and more drinks! On Monday a large group of us boarded a bus and went across town to Juan Wedel's World Class FITA Range which he cut into the side of a mountain where you can view about half of San Jose. This range is spectacular and surrounded by plants and trees that the Wedel family has planted and has a large collection of concrete blocks with the palm prints and names of archers from around the world that have been there over the years. We set up and shot a half FITA STAR that is sponsored by " Bowman Accu-Riser Bows"(a shameless plug for my company) and when we were finished. Juan hosted a Costa Rican style Barbecue for all of us. In this shoot Frank Pearson won with Juan Wedel second and I was third.
justsahcad of my friend Alberto Balcazar. In the recurve class Ed Eliason resumed his domination of this tournament with a win followed by Lamer Delange of Costa Rica. This was the last day of the tournament so we all said our Good-byes (more hugs and Kisses!) and speaking for all competitors 1 would like to thank the San Jose Club and especially Juan and Rosanna Wedel who did everything to ensure we all had an unforgettable experience. These people do so much work to benefit archery it must be experienced to be believed. After the competition finished my Dad and I left with Juan Jose on a weeks adventure starting on the Atlantic Ocean side, we did the Tortuguero Monkey Jungle Tour which included approximately 60 miles of river running to get to the coast where we saw more species of birds and animals than I ever would have believed. After a couple of days boating thru the Rain Forest we headed back to San Jose and then went to the Pacific Coast in Juan Mercedes Gelendewagen to a resort at Playa Samara where we stayed in Juan's cabin within 100 feet of a sparkling beach. We swam. snorkclcd and even chartered a small boat and went deep sea fishing about 15 miles offshore where we caught a couple of yellowfin tuna which became supper in Juan's capable hands. We then toured the coast and had a run-in with a wild horse who put a dent in our truck and on the same night we got to see a Two Toed Sloth which is very rare. We traveled along the coast sampling the local food and visited some beautiful resorts looking for a site for the next Costa Rica Cup. It was the trip of a lifetime for my father and me and I can not express my thanks enough to Juan and his wife Roxanna for their hospitality to all of us and I hope more people will come to enjoy this wonderful experience.

Colo. - (Mar. 28. 2000) - The National Archery Association of the United States announced today that Justin Huish (CA) has resigned from the U.S. Olympic Team for the Sydney 2000 Games. The other U.S. men's Olympic Archcry Team members are Vic Wunderle (IL) and Richard “Butch" Johnson (CT). Huish's spot on the Olympic Team will be filled by Rod White (IA) who had the next highest point total during the Olympic Trials process. While was a member of the gold medal winning 1996 men's Olympic Team along with Huish and Johnson. Jason McKittrick (IN), the 1999 Pan American Games Gold Medalist, will become the team’s alternate. The women's Olympic Team is composed of Janet Dykman (CA). Denise Parker (UT) and Karen Scavotto (CT).

We recently received the scores attained in the North American Field Archery' Championship - NAFAC-99 held in Hamilton. Ontario. Canada. Some new records were at tained by the shooters and. I will include those along with the score listing. While we are talking about NAFAC, we have learned that N AFAC-2000 will be held in conjunction with the NFAAUSA National Field Championship. This is scheduled for July 27 - 29.2000 and, will be held at Darrington, Washing ton. You may know that the NFAA-USA has gone to a three day national tournament this year. This means that the NAFAC event, by being a part of the tournament, will consist of one round each Field. Hunter and Animal. We do not have the information concerning the sequence of the rounds as yet. Information appears in the Tournament Box. As reported late into last year, the IFAA Indoor tournament-which has been held three times in the USA-was ex pected to go to Australia and be hosted by the IFAA affili ate, ABA. This became impossible for that affiliate to do and they had to turn it down. We have had some late con versation with our affiliate in Singapore which appears to be bearing some fruit. The Indoor has never been held outside the United States and it is deemed necessary to take the step to move it on through the regions and give it more ex posure. While we are looking at the probability of much 66
Singapore. \ Although the Vegas tournament is not an IFAA event, we think it important that the NFAA has pur chased the tournament and, will be doing its best to preserve this very popular tournament. To that end. both the IFAA President and Vice-President are planning on at tending this first event under the auspices of the NFAA. The Vegas shoot is scheduled for March 10 through the 12th of this year. Each year there is a significant number of archers from overseas who attend the Vegas Shoot, now called the World Archery Festival. Remember, if you have not already made your plans and reservations for WFAC-200- in the Republic of South Af rica, you need to do so soon, (good advice for me also) Hope you have also, made plans to tour some of the areas of South Africa such as Krueger National Park. There are many other place and sights to visit, in fact the tournament site is in a very picturesque area of the country. Bring a lot of film and don’t forget the camera. If you plan to observe the wildlife, be sure to carry your binoculars with you. Hope that most of you were able to attend the IFAA World Indoor Archery Championship in Tulsa this year.

Today I write to say goodbye to my Best Friend, Archery companion and Wife Cathy. Cathy was murdered while at work in a senseless act of violence. She would have been 44 on Jan. 5th and that was to be our 8th wedding anniversary. Cathy was a longtime member of the NFAA and WSAA as well as a NFAA certified instructor. She was a wcllaccomplishcd archer and loved to teach kids the sport that she loved. “Archery." Many people knew Cathy at the tournaments by name and a few knew her just by her smile. She was always willing to help someone and loved to talk to people. In the nearly 8 years we were married. Cathy attended every single tournament that 1 went to in the Pro Class, sometimes this was 30-40 tournaments a year. Even if she didn’t want to shoot she would come with me and root me on. Many limes she just sal and talked or filmed me and my friends with the camcorder. She never complained about anything and was an excellent ambassador to the sport, always giving to the sport she loved. Words cannot MARCH-APRIL 2000
describe how saddened we all are that she is gone. Many people in the Pro Class were good friends with Cathy and can attest to her personality. Dee Wilde was one of Cathy's friends that she never failed to give a razzing to. she enjoyed picking on him whenever she got a chance and Dee did the same. The most memorable thing she did to whomever had a bad day.fincluding myself) is to say. "This is suppose to be for fun or have you forgotten that." These words will still ring loud and clear every day that I shoot without her. and will probably continue to forever. Archcry as a whole has lost a very great person in Cathy, as did her family, friends. co-workers and the general public as a whole. If you didn't know Cathy you missed meeting one very great person. I would also like to thank the many people in the Archery community as well as the manufacturers who have sent well wishes and condolences they were greatly appreciated by all of us in her family. PUTTING THE FUN BACK INTO ARCHERY
Since the advent and start of competitive archery during the late 1800's, our beloved sport has been plagued with a constant and steady stream of controversies and differences between organizations, club members, and archers. Will archery ever change and eventually lead to the formation of one gigantic national governing archery body that will preside over all others or are we going to continue to go along our own separate ways as we have over the past 100 years? Is it possible and a realistic goal to think about the probable merger of all the existing archery associations so that they will all end up living under one roof and shooting by one set of rules? Are all archers ready and willing to have one organizing body dictate and outline the use of archery equipment and procedures? I don’t think so. The history of archery has taught us a valuable lesson when the all out attempt. on behalf of the AAC and reining top finger shooters of that era. to ban compound bows and release devices during the early 70's. With the existence of different shooting rules, disciplines, and equipment, it appears that disunity will continue to prevail along with the continued format of separate organizations, each going their own separate ways while catering to the desires of their own respective memberships. “What must we do to maintain our membership numbers while attracting new participants to organized archery.” The major thorn in our side that continues to plague and affect archery, is the problem related to the loss of members and archers who continue to drop out of archery al a faster rate than flies die off during the cold of winter. What is it that we can do to prevent archers from dropping out of archery and what can we do to maintain the momentum and new interest in archery generated by the advent of the compound bow and release devices during the late 60's and early 70's? Can archery continue to grow as it has over the past 30 years, or have we suddenly reached a peak or point where we will start to slide downhill and end up with a diminished interest in archery and bowhunting? What are we doing wrong and what must we all do to maintain our membership numbers while attracting new participants to archery? Undoubtedly, there must be several very valid and remedial answers out there that may produce some positive changes but. we all know that any new directives always require modifications of our present policies, rounds, and rules. From experience, we all realize that making changes always requires much thought, clever MARCH-APRIL 2000
Virtually, no one can deny that compound bows and release devices have indeed accounted for the tremendous growth rate of archery during the upper half of the past millennium. However, our favorite sport still continues to experience and to have hundreds and hundreds of dropouts leave archery for one unexplained reason or another. Why do archers dropout of organized archery, and what can we do to keep those archers from dropping out of our favorite and chosen sport? Before we can attempt to answer any of these questions, we must first look into several statistics and reasons for archers dropping out of archery and bowhunting. “When archers are shooting poorly, they quit!”
Before we put the blame on "target-panic", human emotions, or upon our built-in autonomic nervous system, as the leading cause for dropouts, let us first attempt to identify and isolate the primary and foremost reasons that make archers quit archery and become drop outs. Past studies and statistics, taken during the late 60's and early seventies, indicate that the main reasons for archers to leave the sport of archery and bowhunting is due to the failure to achieve and maintain the necessary skill required to shoot a bow accurately with consistency. When archers reach the point of diminishing improvement and they experience losing and shooting poorly, they quit! No ifs. no buts. and no joke!

In the ranks of field and bowhunting, many hunters quit when they repeatedly fail to bag and take game afield. Again, we must mention and underline the fact that most bowhunters who quit. do so because of the fact they too have failed to achieve and maintain the necessary skill required to shoot a bow straight and accurately. It may be of interest to note that not one single bowhunter out of over three hundred whom were interviewed ever accused the malady of "buck-fever" or "target-panic" as a reason to quit and drop out of archery. As a rule, bowhunters usually recognize and accept "buck-fever" as a temporary and natural emotional reaction that results from the excitement generated by having close encounters with living animals or predators. In times of danger and excitement, be it real or imagined. the human mind triggers the adrenal glands that release adrenaline into the bloodstream in an effort to prepare us to "fight or take flight". The result of this powerful hormone causes nervousness. 71
stammering, trembling, heavy perspiration and sometimes a complete loss of rational thinking and thought.

“Target-Panic” and “Buck-Fever are not alike! Surprisingly, “target-panic" is a conditioned relies, whilc”buck-fever” is a temporary emotional reaction to sudden excitement.
Yes. human emotions, and our central nervous system, are both capable of temporarily throwing a monkey wrench into the wheels and gears of our shooting machine. This statement is especially true when we arc anticipating something exciting to happen or are exposed to a highly emotional event or tournament. "Buck-fever" therefore, is one of those highly emotional reactions that uncontrollably and automatically occurs when we are suddenly surprised by something totally unexpected or by the sudden appearance of the hunted critter that steps out within close proximity of the bowhunter. However, "buck-fever" is a totally different occurrence as compared to the age-old affliction referred to as "target-panic”. In other words, a bowhunler can experience temporary "buck-fever" without suffering the almost incurable conditioned reflex labeled, "target-panic”. However. the worse scenario is to have a severe case of "targel-panic" and to simultaneously experience "buck-fever" on lop of the dreaded and uncontrollable conditioned reflex commonly referred to as "target-panic".
“Olympic shooters arc also subject to a case of nerves and high emotions.... ” The main reason that a bowhunter gels or experiences "buck fever". is attributed to our innate emotions and to the makeup of our central nervous system. This emotional response can also affect target archery and Olympic shooters as well. The effect of nerves and emotions has been known to take its toll on World Class and target shooters alike. Several well known Olympians can be remembered for "choking up" and missing the target butt during one of the exciting one-to-one competition rounds that arc a recent and new format for Olympic archery. When this happens, the shooter is merely reacting to the rigors of stress and excitement of competition. This usually occurs right after the archer has shot two arrows successfully into the "ten ring" and suddenly starts to worry about the final arrow that will decide which one of the competitors will move up in positioning or win the respective medal for the match.
"A temporary loss of control or sudden nervousness, does not signify Target Panic!....” The reasons why athletes and shooters choke up and perform below their usual par. while failing to show the very best of their abilities, is due to the difficulty of coping with stress during highly emotional situations. The ability of championship caliber archers, and other leading athletes, toconlrol stress through concentration and mental effort plays a very important and significant role in all sports. When we allow stress to enter and take over control, we give way to severe panic and anxiety. When this happens, we suddenly lose our concentration that leads to performing poorly and causes us to probably end up losing. A temporary loss of control similar to the above mentioned situation, does not mean that the archer has "target-panic” nor that he/she has a 72
For many years, archers and experts have professed and proclaimed that "target- panic" and buck-fever" are one and exactly the same. For information purposes, they are not alike! Before I continue to contradict this age-old conviction and belief, we must point out the difference between the two. Before we proceed, it is absolutely imperative that we examine and compare the malady of "target-panic" with the description of "buck- fever" that were outlined in the preceding paragraphs. Following, is an accurate definition of "target-panic" and how it affects the archer.
TARGETPANIC First and foremost, w'e must recognize the fact that "target panic". "gold-fever". "It", and the "doom" are basically different names for the same affliction that plagues archers and shooters. Those terms generally refer to the inability to aim and execute a controlled shot at the moment the archer desires to shoot. In reality, "target-panic" is nothing more than a chronic conditioned reflex that develops when the archer practices bad habits over and over again to the extent that he/she are unable to direct and transform their desired mental directives into specific physical acts required to execute a perfect shot. An archer thus afflicted with "target-panic", or a conditioned reflex, is unknowingly bypassing the mind and is shooting entirely by reflex. In most cases, the shot is triggered by the eye as the sight nears the vicinity of the gold or center of the target. An archer afflicted by "target-panic” will usually shoot on the move, snap shoot, flinch. or freeze on or off the target, without being able to regain control of his/her shooting.
"Recognizing Freezing as the inability to move the sight into the gold or center of the target”.... Before long, panic stricken archers start to realize that they are not aiming nor shooting properly. As a rule, most are releasing prematurely as the sight pin approaches the vicinity of the "bulls eye” or the center of the target. Thankfully, and due to the intelligence of our God given awareness, the panic stricken archer starts to try to stop his sight just outside the border of the spot center and a new "freezer" is bom. Freezing, in relation to archery. simply refers to the inability to move the sight into the center of the gold. The term "freezing" as applied to archery therefore, is also part of a conditioned reflex popularly known as "target-panic" or "gold-fever". ORGANIZED ARCHERY TOURNAMENTS A few years ago, I had the honor and pleasure of walking several friends and family members through one of the Vegas shoot held in Las Vegas held during the early part of each year. Among this group were my sister and her very successful businessman husband, who had never been to an archery tournament nor ever shot a bow. uttered were. "If archcry is trying to gain acceptance as a sport, why do tournament organizers charge admission fees to enter the show/exhibit area? Aren't the manufacturers paying for booth space for the purpose of exhibiting their products? In myopinion. this procedure is not fair to the exhibitors, buyers or attendees".
“A spectator's impression and opinion of archery”... Unable to give a logical answer to his specific questions, we headed for the shooting lines where we watched various divisions and disciplines vying and shooting for prizes and awards. Once again, my observant brother-in-law uttered several other statements. This time, and after viewing the shooting segment of the toumament/show for a lengthy period of time, he said. "As far as I can see and understand, archery is no fun - it appears to be pure agony and anguish, according to the facial expressions that I have seen. Just look at the tell-tale expressions on their faces. They all appear to be shooting under a great amount of stress and all arc also showing a great amount of mental despair on their faces. Arc you trying to tell me that this is what everyone calls fun? NO WAY. FRED-DAY!"

20th Century Report Addition I’d like to take this opportunity to add a noteworthy event that I failed to mention in my 20th Century report for the Jan/Feb. issue of U.S. and International Archer magazine. As the history of archery documents and records, the late James Doug Easton founded and started Easton Archery Shop during 1922 in Watsonville, California. Mr. Easton was known for his quality handmade arrows and custom long bows during that era. His continuous quest for perfection ultimately lead to the development and mass marketing of quality aluminum arrows for the sport of archery. During 1972, our beloved sport was saddened by the passing of James Doug Easton who left his very successful business enterprise in the capable hands of his son, Jim. Since that time, the growth and success of Easton Aluminum and Technical Sports is known to the world and our sport. My sincere apologies to the entire Easton family for this oversight... If someone off the street as outsiders can sense the rigors of tournament competition, how must the people on the shooting line feel? Are shooters truly enjoying archery for the fun of it. or are they merely paying high entry fees to suffer the tremendous mental anguish of competition while exposing themselves to the high emotional stress of competition required for winning or losing? Does it really have to be that way? Where is the element of so-called "fun" in archery that we hear so much about? At become fun by simply adding a variety of prize winning fun events what point or segment of the tournament does the "fun" begin? where nobody has the upper hand with regards to winning. We If archers are not having "fun" in their chosen sport and are not must also recognize the fact that the element of fun disappears experiencing continued success, how long will it be before they the moment that we start keeping score and making shooting too, drop out of organized archery and turn to other sports or rounds more difficult. To understand the archery shot, it is necessary to understand that archery is not a sport...it’s a discipline. There is no defense, no interactive spontaneous decision making, or alternate strategies to run an active defense like traditional sports. The secret to an archer's success is to be able to exactly repeat each shot the same way. each and every time. Therefore, it is a true discipline and the heart of a discipline is a sequence. The following is an analysis of the shot sequence that 1 teach in the NFAA Shooter’s School. This sequence must be practiced until it is absorbed subconsciously and you don’t have to think about the steps consciously in order to repeal them shot to shot. The conscious mind should only be used to think about the exact spot where you want the arrow to go. When dealing with this "blueprint of the shot", we break the 12 step shot sequence into two parts....the defensive, which has 7 steps. (I. FOOT POSITION 2. NOCK ARROW 3. HOOK-UP 4. SET BOW HAND 5. PRE-AIM 6. DRAW TO ANCHOR 7. CALL SHOT TO ORDER) and the offensive, which has 5 steps (8. COMMIT 9. START MOTOR 10. AIMING MOMENT 11. FOLLOW THROUGH 12. CONCLUSION). You could have less steps in your shot sequence if you wish, such as, grouping together foot position, nock arrow and hook-up as one step, but you should have all these items in your sequence and they should be in order.
THEDEFENSE The defensive part of the shot sequence is really building a shooting platform. We’re not interested in hitting anything at this point because we’re not aiming yet. We're simply setting up the platform. This is defensive and we are very cautious and meticulous at this stage. We don’t want to rush through this, because if at anytime in this phase, something doesn’t look or feel right, it will adversely effect the offensive part, (and therefore the impact of the arrow) so we should let down and start over.
1. FOOT POSITION Take the foot position that naturally fits you. so there is no built-in body torque. If you put your feet on the line a certain way because “Bubba" told you it’s the right way. you may be twisting your body in order to aim at the target. The way to find out if your foot position is torque-free, step to the line and close your eyes. Turn your head back behind you to disorient yourself. so you can’t tell where the target is. Then. with your eyes still closed, turn your head toward the target and come to anchor and open youreyes. If yoursight isn’t pointing within a few inches of the target, move your feet until, when you do open your eyes. you are pointing at the target. This is a natural torque-free foot position that should be adopted into your shot sequence. 2. NOCK ARROW Nocking the arrow should be done the same way each time. Don’t push the arrow up against the nock set one time and have it 1/32 inch low the next time. That can effect your arrow flight and impact point.
3. HOOK UP The same goes for hooking onto the bow string. It should be done the same way each time. Consistency is important in setting up the foundation of your shot platform. If you hook on to the string the same way each time, theoretically the release or fingers will come off the same way each time. 4. SET BOW HAND However you put your hand in the bow. be it high wrist, medium wrist, or low wrist grip, do it the same way each and every time. We recommend low wrist, because it is easier to duplicate from shot to shot. With high wrist, or even medium wrist, as the day wears on and you begin to fatigue, the hand position in the grip may start collapsing. The low wrist grip is low and relaxed and is not effected by fatigue. 5. PRE-AIM Bring the bow to about eye level. Sight across the bow, pick a place to draw to. and THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER
then draw to anchor. Most people waste valuable time getting onto the target. If you pick a spot to pre-aim to such as just above the dot, you’ll be ready to aim sooner and will become less shaky because you didn't waste time just getting into the target. Always pre-aim above the spot, because it’s easier to relax down into the target than to use muscle to wrestle it up into the spot.
6. DRAW TO ANCHOR As you draw to anchor, don’t forget to breathe! The best way to do this is. as you draw back, inhale. At full draw, let pan of the breath out. At this point, you are going to line up. (or calibrate.) centering the spot in the peep sight. You don't worry about hitting the X or the kill zone at this point. It is important to note that you are NOT aiming at this point, you arc merely calibrating, or pointing the bow where you want to hit. (At this point you should have burned up about 4 seconds from the time you raised your bow to draw.) 7. CALL SHOT TO ORDER At this point, you want to ask yourself a question: "Do 1 have the previous 6 steps under control and docs everything feel right?” If the answer to this is “Yes. 1 have control and I can athletically keep this platform together for at least 4 more seconds, then you will change your attitude and go on the offense. (Four seconds is about the average for most people to be able to complete the rest of the shot. Young shooters or archers that are in really good physical shape will be able to hold a little longer than 4 seconds. Conversely, senior shooters and archers that are out of shape, may only be able to hold another 3 seconds. Any shorter than this, and you would be getting into snap-shooting territory.) From raising the bow to conclusion of followthrough. the average shot should last approximately 8 seconds.
THE OFFENSE Now we are going to go boldly ahead. Up to this point, you have been extremely picky and cautious. Imagine that you were going to go sky-diving. The defense is packing your chute! You would be extremely cautious and meticulous, because your life depends on it. wouldn’t you! If you felt that something wasn’t exactly right while packing your chute and you didn’t feel confident that it wasn’t absolutely perfect, you would probably start all over again. But now. you know your parachute is packed perfectly. No more caution! You’re ready to boldly proceed and you’re committed to jump out of that airplane! MARCH-APRIL 2000

8. COMMIT You either commit to the end or conclusion of the shot, or let it down. Most good target archers will let down 20% to 30% of the time when under pressure, and I5% to 20% of the time in practice. So. if you only let down 3 times in a 60 arrow round, then that must mean that you’re better than the top professionals, because they let down a whole lot more than 2 or 3 times! If you’re wondering where some of those missed X’s came from, chances are you ignored the above question. something didn’t look or feel right, and you went ahead and shot the arrow anyway. If it doesn’t look or feel right........ LET IT DOWN! Top shooters do not gamble...if the shot doesn’t feel right, they let down. This step is one of the most important and is usually ignored. We’re all guilty of it. But. if you want to become a better archer. you will get in the habit of letting down when something just isn’t right. Remember. you never hear someone say...I wish I hadn’t let that one down! 9. START MOTOR If you commit, that triggers you to start the motor. The motor is like a 3 to 4 second fuse we light that indirectly causes release. without conscious thought. For most people, back tension is the only way to repeat a subconscious motor. You should activate the back muscles by squeezing the rhomboid (located between the shoulder blades) on the siring arm side, toward the spine, which will move the elbow backwards, and behind your head. (See my article on "back tension”, last issue.) This will activate and cause a release, if you hook
up properly and the release is set up properly. You should not have to move your fingers, thumb, or wrist to cause release. For finger shooters, you shouldn’t try to let go of the string, or anticipate "let-go." You should mentally commit to conclusion, i.e.. pull until you touch your shoulder. “Letgo" will happen on its own. The hardest thing for us to do is to TRUST that the motor will run on its own. For most of us, it's human nature to mentally "look" back to see how it's running. Not only do we feel compelled to check up on it. we also want to help it or change it.... do it faster, do it slower, pull harder, etc. When you mentally “look" back to assist the motor, you have left aiming and your conscious mind is now attempting to look back and forth between the motor and the target and is trying to do two things at once. That, my friends, is target panic. The human brain can do only one thing at a time on the conscious level, but many different things at the same time on the subconscious level. Thinking about trying to aim and trigger the release at the same time is two conscious thoughts..... can’t be done! If you think about the trigger, you've left aiming and will lose the pin. So. the solution is to keep aiming on the conscious level and put the "motor" on the subconscious level. 10. AIMING MOMENT Once the motor has been consciously started, you must trust it to work on it’s own. give up control to the subconscious. and you must immerse consciously into aiming. Now. aiming is not what most 75

people think it is. Most believe that aiming is when you are looking at the sight and/or the target. That is calibration, not aiming. Aiming should be defined as “what the mind sees, not what the eyes see. and concern for where the arrow is going." Another way of putting it would be. it's what you’re thinking about, not what your eyes are looking at. An example of this would be. when you arc driving a car. your eyes arc on the road ahead, but your mind could be thinking about what you’re going to have for dinner, or what you’re going to do that weekend. The same thing can happen in archer}'. You can be looking at the target, but your mind could be on the trigger, your shoulder, or numerous other things. You must TRUST that the motor will run on it’s own. without you "looking" back to check on it. Once the motor has started, only two things can happen...eitherthe shot will gooff, or it won’t! (Profound statement. huh?) If the shot doesn’t go off in 3 to 5 seconds of aiming, you should let down. Archery should have a rhythm, just like music. If your shot is 3 seconds long one time and 12 seconds the next time. then it is no longer a discipline, it is an art form that changes on a whim, and your mind doesn’t trust things that change all the time. Can you imagine how strange a song would sound if the tempo changed from normal to slow' to fast, back to slow and then to normal again? A discipline is a structured and metered function, and needs to happen just like a metronome...lick...tock... tick...tock. To get your motor to run on it’s own. it must be trained to the subconscious level. To do this, you must practice it over and over

and over, without a target. Once it is on the subconscious level. you should be able to trust it and you won't have to “look" back at it. or help it to make it run smoothly. Once you immerse into aiming, stay there! Stay hooked up. Don’t let the mind wander back there and figure out how to control the shot. You have already trained the other parts of the shot, it's in your computer, so don't push manual over-ride, or take it off of “auto-pilot." Once you've started the program, trust it, and just aim. Direct your mind to keep concentrating on the middle, exactly where you want the arrow to go. not on the trigger, or back muscles, etc. For most Type A personalities, or analyticals. it’s really hard to concentrate for 3 to 5 seconds on the middle of the X. Most times it's necessary to recite a mantra, (or talk yourself through every shot.) such as "think about the center, think about the center" or "find the center, find the center." or "think harder about the X". etc. over and over and over until the shot goes off by itself! Aiming should always be the last thing you think about consciously during a shot. 11. FOLLOW THROUGH Then, follow-through will happen. It is not caused to happen. it is allowed to happen. It is simply the dynamic release of tension. However, it should happen to the pre-measured conclusion, which is the end of follow-through. 12. CONCLUSION Conclusion is the end of the shot, not follow-through. If followthrough was the end of the shot, it could be anticipated, then it could be shortened to varying degrees; even to the moment of explosion, because we didn't define its length. This would be "quitting" while the arrow is still in the bow, thereby effecting the Hight. You don't quit until the arrow is past the rest and riser. where conclusion is, (something that takes longer to do than it takes the arrow to clear the bow). There arc three kinds of conclusions: touch, sight or sound. Some examples would be. touch the shoulder with the release hand before "quitting" on the shot, or don't quit until you see or hear the arrow hit the target. You can be sure with any of these that the arrow is out of the bow. Type A's. analyticals, and risk taker personalities that must anticipate something, will find it’s OK to anticipate the conclusion, because it's always after the arrow is gone. Pick a conclusion that you trust, and stick with it. All sports have a conclusion. A good golfer completes the swing, clear up and past his shoulders before he quits..... not immediately after he hits the ball. Same with a baseball pitch, a tennis serve, etc. Stay in it. keep aiming, until conclusion.
PROGRAMMING TO THE SUBCONSCIOUS The shot sequence must be practiced and absorbed without a target one of 3 ways; with an air bow (a hydraulic device that fastens on your bow and lets you dry-fire your bow), a bow simulator that duplicates the explosion and simulates holding weight, mass weight, your draw length, etc. or by shooting your bow on an empty bale at shoulder height, about 50 to 60 shots per day, for 3 or 4 weeks. This is creating and ingraining a subconscious “auto-pilot" that you can trust to run on it's own, without any conscious thought, except to "start" it. Then, all you and your conscious mind have to do is aim. trusting that the shot will gooff. You just commit from the motor to conclusion! If you take the time to properly program this sequence, you will discover the real secret of "predictable accuracy" and start having fun with your archcry. Because, after all, it is. just a game! And, if you're not having fun... you're doing it wrong!

Joe Bauernfeind Welcome once again to the Senior Comer. It the time of the year for me to be at my busiest, so this column will consist mostly of news about the upcoming state qualifiers for the 2001 National Senior Games, which will be held in Baton Rouge. Louisiana in July of that year. In the next issue. I'll try to recap the results and some of the happenings of a busy winter on the indoor circuit but for this issue, it's back to me bugging you to get with the program and make your plans to get to your state qualifier and from there to step into the ranks of the Senior Olympic Archers. Baton Rouge has hosted the Games once before, so their experience and the natural tendency of the bayou folks to have fun should make this an unforgettable party. Hot weather, hot food and cool drinks are certain to be the order of the day and if you miss this one.youTl have no one to blame but yourself. The list of state games which accompany this article was just received from the National Senior Games Association and although I’m sure there will be changes to it. the names and phone numbers listed should be enough to get you the exact dates and enough information to make your plans to attend. Also remember that many states allow out of state archers to qualify in their games. should you have other plans for the dates of your own games. It looks like that may be the case for me this year. The NFAA Mid-Atlantic Sectional is scheduled for the same dates as the NY Senior Games and I can't miss that, so I’ll have to figure out how to qualify in another state. This can actually be a good opportunity to plan a visit to a friend in another state, where you can meet new people and make new friends in archery. My first qualifier was in NJ at Brookdale Park and I've since returned to enjoy their fine facility. I've had questions from some of you 78
concerning qualifying at a field archery tournament and 1 will be in touch with the NSGA to find out what their policy is on this. Their qualifying scores for archery include the 900 round and the field round. so there must some way to do it. Don Chipman of Specialty Archery Products said that his state. Iowa, doesn't have archery in their state games for lack of someone to organize it and we talked about the possibility of having a Field Archcry Club run a qualifying shoot. I also wanted to look into the possibility of people from other countries qualifying and coming to the U.S. to participate in the games. When I get some answers to these inquiries. Avoid Target Panic By Terry Wunderlc I was watching one of my students on the practice range as he warmed up for the start of a big 3-D tournament. I noticed there was premature movement in his bow arm before the shot was released. I went over to him and said, "Quit aiming and get your mind where it belongs." He knew exactly what I meant. At one time or another most archers are hampered by the effects of target panic. 1 like to describe it as the involuntary reaction to the fear of Author Terry Wunderle mjssjng [t usually happens when too many negative thoughts arc going through the archer's mind as the shot is being executed. The archer is uncomfortable with the situation and worried about missing. Then there is a panic attack. I truly believe the main cause of target panic is over-aiming. There is by far loo much emphasis put on AIM-AIM-AIM. When the primary focus is placed on aiming, the brain is giving the archer a green light or yes signal when the pin is on the mark and a red light or no signal when it isn't. During a typical shot sequence, the subconscious and/or conscious mind is sending the signals yes-no-yes-no to the voluntary muscles used in the shot sequence. Consequentially, the shot sequence is started-stopped-started, till the shot is executed. This yes/no effect heightens the tension of the situation. Since the primary emphasis is on aiming, the mixed signals end up giving the archer target panic. So what is the best way to avoid or overcome target panic? Shoot from the conscious mind and put your concentration where it belongs—on form. Most shots are missed because of a break down in form, not because the pin was not on the target. Let the pin float on the target. When you try to hold it on or guide it back on target, you are tightening more muscles to do so. These extra tight muscles cause additional sight movement and increase the yes/no effect. A relaxed form that allows the pin to float will have far less movement and will let the bow arm react the same way each lime the arrow is released. To avoid target panic put the thought process where it bclongs—shooting the shot with perfect form. Have confidence in your form. It is the factor that you can control and it will provide you with the positive picture needed for a good shot. Execute the shot with a shot sequence from the conscious mind. Focus completely on shooting with perfect form. If yourmindisfocusedonfonn.it will not be giving you the yes/no shoot signals that cause target panic. If you arc a finger shooter, make sure you have a consistent. clean release. If you are a release shooter. I highly recommend a back tension release. There is no trigger to intensify the yes/no effect. All you have to do is let the pin float on target and pull with your back muscles until the release goes off. A back tension release forces you to shoot good form if it is set off properly. Many of the 3-D archers that 1 coach, practice with a back tension release, but shoot a trigger release at the tournaments. Practicing with the back tension release teaches them correct form and prevents them from getting target panic. Since target panic is a mental problem, prevent it with your mind...... focus on form.

This very popular archers' school assembly tour has been extended into the year 2000. and will include the additional states of Illinois. Ohio. Michigan. Indiana. Wisconsin. Kentucky. For many of the students (hat live in the small, rural towns, the school assembly programs are their only opportunity to sec live performers and receive a personalized anti drug message.
