The Passion of ARCHERY

There is a saying that goes something like this, find something in life that you have a passion for, learn everything you can about the subject, make it your career and you will find success. This passion is evident everywhere. Starting with the manufacturers, sales representatives, dealers and many other associates of the archery industry. The inaugural A.M.O. Archery Trade Show owned and operated by the 43 year old Archcry Manufacturers & Merchants Organization trade association of which

AMO represents the companies behind worldwide archery and the supporters who make The U.S. Archer possible. Our supporters make it possible for us to report the recreational archery news. Support our advertisers. We at The U.S. Archer would like to start off 1997 by thanking our advertisers, subscribers, writers, and the archers who make up this fine sport. Here is a letter from one of our subscribers: / thought I would share with you and my fellow archers a most pleasant experience. As a fledgling (no pun intended) archer. I have relied upon the recommendations of people much more experienced than I. Ann Hoyt of Sky Archery recommended the Accra 1103 Combo sight as a suitable companion for my new Conquest bow. and

I am glad she did! Not only is it a fine piece of equipment, but the customer service rendered by Rick and the staff at Accra is outstanding. I had a minor problem with the horizontal adjustments. and my mentor. Jake Vite, suggested 1 contact the folks at Accra. I spoke with Rick on the phone and he suspected a damaged part. I sent the sight out to Rick via UPS Red. They received it the following morning. Rick confirmed damaged threads and assured me it would be taken care of immediately. I was pleasantly surprised, when arriving home the day after the folks at Accra received my new sight, that it was back in Atlanta. Now. that is what 1 call incredible customer sen ice! In today s market place u e take a lotfor granted. It sure is nice to havefolks like this who not only stand behind their product, but go the extra .aepfor wonderful customer service. Working together can make this a better archery world. Jim Schultz of Archers Who Care is a man of action and passion. He had planned to attend the AMO Trade Show but a few days before the Show opened Jim had an emergency trip to the hospital. There he found out he had diabetes and had to change some plans. By February 8-9 at the NABU Danner Easton Championship in Mesa. Arizona he was back at the range selling T-shirts for his Archers Who Care group who conducts archery camps for HIV. cancer and hemophiliac children across the U.S. He was asked why bother with these kids (see next page for Jim Schultz's response). Would you want to be part of this Tine group? The U.S. Archer is by way of free subscriptions to every person who signs up to work just one day in an AWC camp to help these kids. Is archcry your passion? Even without asking. 1 know archery and kids are Joella Bates Prcsson, Shirley and Tim Strickland's passion. Together with the professional archers at the NABH Mesa. Arizona championships. Joella. Shirley and Tim organized the Kid's Shoot. Sec page 76 for coverage of the Danner/Easton NABH Championships

Archers Who Care from Jim Schultz 16144 E. Palis, des Blvd. • Fountain Hills, AZ 85268 USA Phone (602)837-3119 What is the value of archery? This past weekend I had a question posed to me by a shooter (who we’ll call Mike) at the Cabela's North American Bowhunters shoot in Mesa. Arizona, where AWC had a booth set up selling our new tec shirts. Mike’s question went something like this . . . I’ve been reading your articles about the children and I’ve wondered if the exposure that the children receive from summer camp is lasting? The way the question was posed was that he didn't know if giving to a cause (AWC) would be of any value because a child might only hold a bow once in their life therefore the sport of archery and the related business would not benefit from this child’s one time experience. It was a very honest and interesting question and 1 thought about it for a few seconds as to what was the real value of our program and how was it that I failed

to get my point across to Mike and maybe some others who read the articles. I tried to explain to Mike, that the number of times or the lasting friendship that the child might have with archery was not the point of why we did what we did. As a side benefit archcry, both as a sport and as an industry, will benefit. Is it something that can be measured? Probably not. But that is not why the volunteers arc out there in the hot sun teaching the children archery. It is the self esteem that the child receives. Because, as a child who is unable to participate in normal sporting activities they lose out in many ways. They can’t be like other children. They aren’t able to feel the thrill of making a touchdown or roller blading or sledding down an icy hill. Some of them can’t even go out and watch. When they learn that they can shoot a bow, hit the target and break balloons the adrenaline flows, team

spirit is bom. happiness erupts and pride is instilled. It is no different than making that team winning field goal. That’s what this program is about. So if I didn’t do anything in my articles, please let that message ring clear. What is a long time? To you and me it might be a whole lifetime of watching out children grow. To a child who is HIV positive it might be an hour on the archery range. Docs it really make a difference? We must never try to measure the value of the time spent shooting our bow or walking through the forest watching a squirrel or admiring a tree. Should we say these things are of no value? I would hope not. Life is too precious. The days are shorter than we think. I believe life should be a passion; a powerful, intense emotion. How many of us can say we live life to the fullest? 1 know I can’t! For many of these children everyday is a passion. Wouldn't it be great to feel that way? Life . . . enjoy every moment! Yes. we have tee shirts for sale. Send AWC (tax deductible) a SIS check and we will send you an ash colored, high quality shirt. Don't forget to tell us the size. Or send us S20 and not only will we send you a shirt but buy a shirt to give to a child at one of our summer camps. What a deal! To the archcry clubs, bow- shops, rep groups and manufacturers out there ... I offer you a challenge. Sponsor 100 tee shirts by putting up S500. We’ll put your name on the back of the shirts and make sure the shirt is given to a young archer at one of our summer camps. This summer we arc going to have a contest to name our four colored “target character" that is on the back of the tee shirt. The child that submits the winning name will receive a beautiful bow. Sec you at camp. Jim

Specially written for those who want to win...

Jakes Announces Name Change After just completing our 33rd year in the

archery business, we feel it is time to make a change. Over the course of the past years, many other archery related businesses have used the words "High Country" as part of their company name, even their logos have been very similar to ours. This has caused some confusion in the industry for dealers and even some manufacturers After being in business for more than 30 years. we feel our service to the dealer as a full line archery

distributor is second to none. We also feel that our credit and payment history is impeccable and should in no way be confused with other companies. We feel that this name change to Jake's Archery Inc. will help clanfy our position in the industry. For information contact Jake’s Archery, Inc., 765 S. Orem Blvd . Dept. USA, Orem. Veteran Archers Crowe and Barnes on Target in Mesa North American Bowhunters • Mesa, AZ • February 8-9, 1997 MESA. Arizona — Except for a stiff breeze, NABH archers found the scenic courses at the Danner/Easton Arizona Open much to their liking this weekend. Many of the contestants recorded exceptionally high scores during this first event on the Nonh American Bowhunters 1997 tournament trail held here at the Rio Salado Sportsman's Club. Thomas E. Crowe of Welches, OR, grabbed top honors in the Pro Men’s Division recording a superb score of 464. The two-day total included 16 shots in the 12-ring. This year's Pro Division competition included an interesting twist which surprised many of the contestants. Following the regular 40-round competition, participants recording the top seven scores in the Pro Men's Division and the top three scores in the other Pro classes competed in a five-target “Shoot-Down” which determines the winner of the event. At the completion of the 40-target Pro Men's competitive round, David Miller of

Phoenix, AZ, held the lead. Derek Phillips, Colorado Springs, CO, occupied the second place spot, while Randy Ulmer of Cave Creek, AZ, was in third and Billy McCall of East Flat Rock. NC. held the fourth place spot. Crowe, who actually finished fifth after the first 40 targets, rocketed to the top during the “Shoot Down” to collect the Pro Men's top prize of S6.036. Second place honors in the Pro Men's Division were earned by Derek Phillips. Phillips recorded a two day total of 463 and collected winnings totaling S2.890. Finishing third among the Pro Men was Randy Ulmer. Overbrook OK. veteran Sherry Bames earned the top spot in the Pro Women's Division with a two-day score of 409. Barnes collected a total of SI.300 in winnings. Second place on the women s side went to Juliet Swanson of Medina. OH. Swanson’s two-day score of 387 netted her earnings of S634. Third place in the

Brownwood, TX. archer Gene Curry finished third in the Pro Men's Seniors competition. The Danner/Easton Arizona Open drew more than 1.000 shooters from nearly 30 states. The Scott Mongoose release offers today's demanding shooters the best of both worlds. The patented design incorporates the machine-like consistency of a caliper release with the unique forgiving qualities of a rope release. By combining a fixed jaw and single moving jaw. the Mongoose utilizes built-in bias to offer more tolerance for minor inconsistencies in shooting form and execution. The fixed jaw supplies a compensating force at the pressure point, providing the string with single directional bias. The result is greatly improved directional stability in a perfectly smooth and consistent

The Mongoose features strap options, strap-to-trigger length adjustments and interchangeable triggers for any shooting preference. For shot after shot consistency. quality workmanship and uncompromising attention to detail, see why today's serious bowhunters and competitive archers know they can count on Scott. There is only one place like Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Shoot. The excitement of seeing all the lights, the entertainment and. of course. friends that you haven't seen for years and years. I was very pleased to see my old friends Diane and Jim Miller from Pennsylvania. They came to Las Vegas just to see old friends. Thirty years ago Bob Bitner shot the first perfect 300 round at the 1967 Las Vegas event. Bob recalls coming into Las Vegas late on Thursday. Friday, he was on the line and came to his ninth end of perfect 25’s. This was the first time he had gotten past eight perfect ends The 10th and 11 th were a blur Then on the 12th end he asked the men standing in front of him and behind him. Dave Schemenaur and Sherwood Schock, not to leave him on the line by himself. He let down once or twice but got off the last five arrows for another perfect 25 and a new record. Bob said. "This was the only time my knees shook in the 40 years of tournament competition. Betting Bob Rhode even had S20.00 against me but I had a great day. It goes back to just shooting good form.” By the way. Bob Bitner started archcry in 1951 while a Boy Scout in Art Simpson’s Illinois troop. Last year Roger Hoyle placed fifth at the Las Vegas Shoot. He said. "It was unreal, the feeling I had after I won. I knew I was capable of it but I didn’t think it would happen.” Roger is a senior at Southern Utah University and has

Two rounds of 20 3-D targets shot at unknown distances up to 45 yards creates the competition criteria. Arrow speed is limited to 280 F.P.S. in all 15 divisions. while arrows are scored with 5. 8, 10, and 12 point scoring sections. A 480 with 40 twelve rings is a perfect score, while 400 is considered PAR. The highest Pro Division score in ASA history, a 434 with 19 twelve rings was shot by Jeff Hopkins of Clayton, Delaware in 1996. The “Tour" finale is the ASA World Championship “Classic" held in Gainesville. Georgia. August 14-17. Saturday: First Round Competition — The Open Pro Division leader was DAvid Stepp (High Country) of Chandler. Arizona shooting a 214 with 10 twelve rings, while Jeff Hopkins (Bcar/Jennings) of Clayton. Delaware shot a solid 208 with 7 twelve rinds. In the Women’s Pro Division. Ginger Hopwood (Bear/ Jennings) of Marietta. Georgia shot a strong 200 with 5 twelve rings, while Susan Thompson (Bcar/Jennings) of Douglasville, Georgia turned in a 200 with 4 twelve rings and Senior Pro George Dixon (Mathews) of Salida. Colorado shot a hot 205 with 7 twelve rings. 92

Sunday: Second Round Competition — George Dixon retained his lead in the Senior Pro Division with a 399 and 10 twelve rings. Women’s Pro Ginger Hopwood slipped from the top opening the way for Susan Thompson to lead with a 394 and 5 twelve rings. Laurie Watson (Hoyt) of Cave Creek. Arizona held second with a 384 and 5 twelve rings, and Chencc Tillett (Martin) of Dahlgren. Virginia finished in third with a 383 and 6 twelve rings. The Open Pro Division was too close to call as Derek Phillips (Mathews) of Colordao Springs, Colorado led the field with a 411 and 18 twelve rings. Jeff Hopkins (Bear/Jennings) of Clayton. Delaware stood strong with a 407 and 14 twelve rings. The first round leader, David Stepp (High Country) of Changlcr. Arizona slipped in the second round but held on to third with a solid 401 and 13 twelve rings. Final Round Competition — Senior Pro George Dixon scored an additional 52 points to lock down first place with a 451 and 10 twelve rings and a S2.5OO.OO check including Pennzoil bonuses. The Women’s Pro Division saw Susan Thompson miss a target and slip to third place, while Laurie Watson held on to second with a 432 and 5 twelve rings. Chenee Tillett was the big story for here in her first Professional tournament, she scored an additional 50 points in the final round for the win! Chenee’s 433 and 6 twelve rings earned her a check for S2.5OO.OO including Pennzoil bonuses. The Open Pro Division’s first winner of 1997 was Jeff Hopkins with a final round total of 465 and 14 twelve rings. Derek Phillips took second and David Stepp took third. Jeff Hopkins’ check totalled S10.000.00 including Pennzoil 3-D Challenge bonuses. The Brunton Shoot-Off on Saturday afternoon saw the top 20 pro and amateur scores from first round competition shooting it out for $2,000.00 cash. The field was quickly whittled-down to head to head shooting for the twelve ring between Jeff Hopkins and Randy Ulmer

(Browning) of Cave Creek. Arizona. Ulmer won the battle with a closest to the center of the twelve ring arrow. The 1997 Bear/Jennings ASA Pro/Am Florida Championship was also the debut of the ASA Trebark/Pennzoil “Bowhunter Challenge," where competitors shoot a series of 10 stationary McKenzie 3-D targets and 10 “Pop & Walk-Out McKenzie 3-D targets. Top competitors shoot an additional 5 target Pop & WalkOut Final Round fora possible 308 perfect score. Kevin Leonard of St. Augustine. Florida shot a winning score of 271 points and took home a fully rigged Mathews Solo-Cam bow for his efforts. Another debut of sorts came with 19 year old. U.S. Olympic Team member and 1996 Gold Medalist Rod White. Rod turned Pro at the event and shot a respectable 362 with 8 twelve rings. “3D’s are a log tougher than Olympic tournaments. I didn’t shoot a Gold Medal round, but I was pleased with my first try at Professional 3-D Archery." said White. The 38th All Japan Target Championships were held in the middle ofNovember in Shizuoka Prefecture. Why in November? It’s already winter season. isn’t it? Yes, that’s right. 1 easily guess many American archers feel it strange. But, here in Japan, many athletic championships arc held front late October to November whether outdoor or indoor event because they are the final and closing competitions of the year. You can imagine the Baseball World Series that is also held in November in the United States. Most serious problem of this championships is wind. Although Shizuoka Prefecture has one of the most temperate climates in this country, the only faut is the wind in winter. If archers had a lucky chance, they could shoot in sunny and warm field throughout the competition. But they could not in the first day of the qualificiaiton round. Only three archers shot over 1200. Hiroshi Yamamoto, an Atlanta Olympian and won the national title 5 times, scored 1204 in the men’s field. A defending champion Ai Ouchi who also attended the Atlanta scored 1211 and izumi Ohira, a hopeful highschool girl, shot 1208 in the women’s line. One of interest in the Olympic round is upset. Even if an excellent archer who ranked top position in the qualificaion round, he/she docs not necessarily reach to the final match to take a gold medal. Lower ranking archers are wathing vigilantly for a chance to beat in every stage. Maybe they are free from the pressure than the higher rankers. If they lost a match, they will be none the worse for it. Additionally, it sems many spectators have a tendency to support a lower ranking archer in atmosphere. Hiroshi was defeated by Sadamu Nishikawa, a ‘94 national champion, in the 8th final. Taka Matsushita, another Atlanata Olympian and won the national 10 times, also lost in the 8th final. Hidcto Kato, 8th in the qualification, won the matches one by one unnoticed and reached the finals. Frankly, he was almost an unknown archer until last year's All Japan in which he ranked 5th. Hidcto gained his

first national title by his 12th arrow in the final match. He had to shoot his final arrow to the 10 ring to beat Kenji Tokunaga. Nine meant a shoot off and 8 a loss of the match. Everybody thought he could not hit the bull's eye because his past records were poor. But he got it. It’s very dramatic. While in the women's field, Ai Ouchi proceeded to the finals without a hitch. A collegiate champion Mayumi Asano, 3rd in the qualification, also reached to the final very easily. All spectators expected a fierce battle as Ai and Mayumi are most able shooter at present. But they were disappointed. Ai lost her form completely in the ultimate match. Nobody knows what happened in her mind. Mayumi won her first national title hands down. In the compound division, Akira Okuno and Yuko Sumiyoshi won their first national title respectively. Yuko was especially happy as she had lost the final matches in 1994 and 1995.

Toward the Gold with Freddie Troncoso Letters to the Editor: This is a response to an article by Freddie Tronosco in his interview with Alexander Kirillov in the Jan-Feb 1997 U.S. Archer magazine. Dear Mr. Tronosco: Over the years I have read your column and generally agree with most of what you write. However, I must differ with you in regard to your "Shooting Tip of the Month" in the Jan-Feb 1997 U.S. Archer magazine. The strength and pulling conditioning for archery both you and Alexander Kirillov profess may work for a number of adults but may induce or risk injury in young archers. 1 was looking for a qualification or age recommendation in the "Tip" column but it was not there. One quote in the last paragraph stated, “This is an excellent approach to archery conditioning that should be utilized and applied by all archers." 1 hope that youth, whose bodies are still developing, do not take this suggestion literally and push themselves to the point of

injury. There are enough youth, both in the NAA JOAD and NFAA who already shoot bows too heavy to control. Suggesting conditioning with 10-15 lb. heavier bows will put them at a greater risk for injury. A conditioning program for youth should be a gradual progression of draw weight which is compatible with their physical abilities. The Theraband rubber product is an excellent conditioning tool. I recommend not using more than 5 lbs. more of draw force for conditioning for youth. Conditioning for a long day of shooting requires a buildup of stamina. Perhaps if the archer shoots 40-45 lbs. with a recurve I0 to 15 is not that much extra. To a youth shooting 20-25 lbs that great of a increase is just a step away from a season ending injury. I understand you may have meant this conditioning exercise for mature archers, however I implore you to qualify your statement in the article for the benefit of your younger readers. Don Branson. Wheaton. Illinois Auroraland JOAD. NAA Level III Coach Dear Mr. Branson, Thank you for bringing to light a very important oversight regarding the conditioning exercise that was published in my column of the January-February issue of U.S. Archer. You are correct, the exercise program outlined should be limited to mature archers only who are physically fit. and who

are accustomed to pulling and shooting a bow and arrow on a steady basis. I am taking the opportunity to forward a modification and addendum to the mentioned conditioning exercise program in question. Ironically, I recently decided to test and employ the training method outlined in the latest U.S. Archer. Not having shot for a two year period. I decided to try to build strength according to the outline. Having pulled heavy bows since the days of my early youth. I foolishly selected a 70# Howard Hill longbow and proceeded to try to draw the bow to my anchor point. Due to the loss of muscle tone and loss of strength caused by long periods of layoff. I discovered that I could barely draw the longbow a short span of 25 inches. About all I could do with the stout heavy bow was to complete two or three sets of six attempted draws before 1 had to stop. The truth is. I was straining to merely pull the bow back, let alone try to hold it at full draw! Luckily, my common sense and instincts convinced me pick up a 35# recurve bow that I could pull back comfortably and hold as I slowly regain my pulling strength and one that allows me to draw the bow without any undue strain. After the above mentioned trial and experimentation session, as applied to the conditioning exercise program, I conclude and sincerely recommend that archers first warm up using a light weight bow or a rubber band exerciser as you mention prior to any and all shooting! I also advocate that archers not exceed the shooting weight or peak weight of the bow they arc presently shooting while performing the static conditioning exercise program if they have not been shooting over a long period of time. In this manner, archers can build shooting strength gradually while performing the static conditioning exercise program outlined. Wisely, archers can build shooting strength gradually without any undue pain or strain. And most important, conditioning exercises for children and young archers should only be conducted under the recommendations and supervision of a qualified coach or instructor. Remember, never exceed the pulling weight of the bow that young archers are presently shooting! Freddie Troncoso

Freddie's Sh®®ting Tip of the Month FOR ALL ARCHERS Waxing of the bowstring has been a long standing practice since the invention of the bent stick for hunting, fishing and target shooting. Archers of yesteryear would wax their bowstrings on a regular basis especially after completing a days shooting on the field or target range. Those pioneers would use pure raw filtered bees wax to coat and protect their strings followed by a brief burnishing period that called for the use of a piece of soft elk skin or deer hide. This application would seal the bowstring from wear and tear while simultaneously protecting it from the elements. They would literally and physically work the wax into the bowstring strands by hand friction using a continuous up and down rubbing motion. By adding a few twists to the bowstring, the application of wax to the taunt bowstring in an effort to prevent wind planing and to reduce additional contorting of the string upon release. Today, in spite of the fact that bowstring materials have vastly improved, waxing of the bowstring using bees wax or synthetic compounds continues and is still a necessary procedure for prolonging the life of the bowstring while serving to waterproof the surface of the string. Yes. bees wax still continues to be one of nature’s most useful and precious gifts!

One of the toughest things to do with a bow and arrow is to shoot accurately while the wind is blowing. I produced a segment about this very subject in Frank Pearson’s video entitled. "Shooting Form and Problem Solving." Frank is probably the best in the world at shooting in the wind. Because my wife and 1 spent 6 years shooting competitively in Hawaii, where the wind blows almost constantly, we got a lot of experience practicing Frank's dos and don’ts of playing the wind. Since then, I have picked up some additional tips that make up a fairly comprehensive "arsenal" against the wind that J now teach in NFAA’s new mobile

The tilt or cant automatically casts the arrow away on a windy day in an important tournament. An hour or two of practice from the point of aim in the direction of once or twice a month will put light years the cant. For example, you might find that ahead of the archers who experiment at if you cant the top limb 5 inches (or X the tournament. I’ve found that initially amount of degrees) to the right in a 10 Olympic-style (FITA) targets with different M.P.H. crosswind, then your arrows will colored scoring rings make it easier to go in the middle. happen. A) Your muscles, and therefore your sight picture, will start to shake from oxygen depravation and fatigue if you try to hold past your personal comfort zone. B) Because the wind is blowing your sight around anyway, this aggravates the condition described in “A". This causes your mind to leave the target and go to the release (where it should NOT be) in an effort to time the shot, causing all kinds of fear, anxiety and nervousness to build. This situation causes you to punch the trigger or pluck the string, causing a bad shot. C) The longer you tend to hold, the harder you tend to excessively push with your bow arm, in an effort to “help the shot." In right-handed archers, this will cause left arrows. D) The anxiety and fear caused in “B” often leads to full-blown target panic. and you sure don’t need that! 4. Don’t Over-Control. Remember, if you try to muscle the bow into holding steady in the wind, it will only make it worse. “Recruiting muscles causes movement,” as Randy Ulmer points out in his video. Winning Form. Relax and let the sight move around . . . it’s going to. anyway! Also, focus on the spot you are aiming at. not the sight pin, and shoot the best shot you can. Shoot through it . . . don't alter the shot. 5. Heavier mass weight. You will find it much easier to hold steady in the wind if you add a heavier stabilizer, preferably not a long thick one that will pick up a lot of side wind drag. A spare set of heavier V-bars or a spare back weight can make a big difference on a windy day. Be sure you work them into your practice routine and record the results in your logbook so you know what to expect when you put them on your bow on tournament day. 6. Realistic Goals. As with normal shooting, it is important not to set your expectations past a point that you can reasonably expect to reach. Don’t expect miracles! Remember, all these methods will vary from shooter to shooter, bow to bow, and arrow to arrow, depending on the speed of the wind. It is not an exact science! What it will do is give you that few extra points because you are less nervous and afraid. and much more aware of what is probably going to happen when the wind does blow.

1997 NFAA Shooter’s School Update!! We Cure Target Panic! By Bernie Pellerite Author's Background: Bernie's past experience and achievements include: 8 state indoor, field and 3-D championships. NFAA & NAA Certified Instructor, pro-staff shooter and coach, seminar speaker, and pm shop owner. He is presently writing articlesfor several archery magazines. As a bowhunter, he has 5 animals in the top 10 ofSafari Club International Record Book. He is president of Robinhood Video Productions, the world's largest and most popular producers ofinstructional archery videos which presently has 28 titles marketed into 30 countries. Bernie and his wife, Jan. will he conducting NFAA Shooter Schools and Target Panic Seminars aimed at the intermediate Io pro level archers. This Shooting School is now available on six videos. See page For more information, call Bernie or Jan at Robinhood Video. Phone (352)237-76)4 or Fax (352)237-8775. This unique mobile school is now in its second year. The 1996 season saw almost 250 archers complete the weekend curriculum that covers over 200 topics. Dozens of these shooters have reported back that their Target Panic is now history! Director Bernie Pellerite reports. "1 believe I’ve finally been able to analyze the cause of target panic . . . it's not what most people think! The key to success and enjoyment of upper level archery is a positive subconsciously structured shot sequence. Without it. an unpleasant negative mental phenomenon we call Target Panic can creep into our sequence until it is eventually completely replaced and is subconsciously reprogrammed negatively with a neurotic preoccupation and fear of missing, which varies in form and severity from shooter to shooter i.e. freezing, snap shooting. flinching, and punching the trigger. I’ve discovered that a 2-step approach works best. Step 1 - Remove the cause . .. with a 12 step mental and physical shot sequence (which is on video tape 1 and 2 of the Shooter School Scries). Step 2 - Cure the symptoms . . . freezing, snap-shooting, flinching, and punching the trigger, etc. with one or more or the methods and/ or shooting drills (tape 3 of the Schooter School Scries). Also. from various tips from many shooters and coaches, in particular Len Cardinale. I’ve analyzed them further and discovered particular connections with personality' trails that people with certain types of Target Panic have in common. By further analyzing these personality traits I can now predict particular destructive tendencies with reasonable certainty and take steps

to prevent or counteract their affects. These revelations allow me to finally give ‘a light at the end of the tunnel’ to the thousands of shooters that have this seif destructive and often terminal malady.” This school is also available now from Robinhood Videos in a 6 tape series with over 7 1/2 hours of information (See ad on

page 3). The first 3 volumes deal with Target Panic and its cures among other things. Note: If you attend the Shooter School, you will receive a discount ofS50.00 toward the purchase of the video set. Or. if you purchase the video set, you will receive a S50.00 discount on the Shooters School. The schedule for 1997 is already set from January until June I and the second half of the year is being scheduled now but there arc still some openings for the Shooters School or Target Panic Seminar if you act soon! The Target Panic Seminar is a 5 hour seminar held on aTuesday, Wednesday orThursday covering target panic, holding steady and shooting under pressure. There is a minimum of 15 students required at S50.00 per person. Some of the sites trying to put together the necessary requirements for the seminars and Shooter Schools cover 13 states including: 3 in Michigan. 2 in Minnesota. 2 in Connecticut. 2 in New York. 2 in Wisconsin. 2 in West Virginia. Ohio. Virginia. Nebraska. Georgia. Tennessee. Delaware. Alaska and 2 in England. The curriculum includes topics such as: practice regimen, equipment setup, arrow speed, tuning, holding steady, mental and physical aiming, back tension, professional form and the shot sequence, shot execution, tournament pressures, and judging yardage. Problem solving and question and answer sessions cover punching the trigger, snap-shooting, flinching, freezing and all forms of Target Panic. Also bow torque, comfort levels, personality profiles, and dealing with control, risk taking and analytical types, and much, much more. Interested shops or clubs should contact us as soon as possible. so we can put them on the schedule or the waiting list for 1997,

Frank's Way from Frank Pearson Aiming and Strength Aiming longer allows us to execute our shot routine better. Without a shot routine. we have no recollection of the shot, so we cannot "play it back" and analyze it. A lol of archers live in areas where they cannot practice as often as they like or need to in order to improve their aiming. There have been different methods and equipment invented to keep your muscles in shape. Unfortunately, the “archcry"

Normally, when we shoot our bows, we do just that. We shoot. We don’t aim. We just shoot and by not aiming we don’t get any stronger. We need to practice aiming. The better you aim the more control you have over the shot. By practicing aiming we build strength which allows us to aim longer.

muscles are not necessarily the same muscles you use every day or work when you go to the gym. To keep my “archery" muscles. 1 use a Rotaflcx. It is constructed so that you can hold and draw it like a bow. I suggest an archcry workout which includes pulling and holding for 15 seconds with each arm. I do this for 10 minutes at a time. This helps to build the muscles that you need for aiming and by alternating arms you don’t build up one side over the other which helps to keep from having back problems. For you hunters. I suggest you try drawing and holding in different positions. such as kneeling, sitting, crouching, and aiming up and down hill. I also suggest you try holding at half draw and then completing the draw and holding some more to stimulate waiting for an animal to get in position. You can use the Rotaflex almost anywhere. I suggest warming up with it before you head off to shoot.

The human mind can only concentrate on a single thing for about 8 seconds. This is why when we are shooting our mind wanders just before the shot goes off and we miss. We began our concentration too soon. Write a shot routine down. You need to adjust this routine so that you don’t begin concentrating until you are at full draw. When you are not at full draw, you should try to think of something unrelated to the shot execution. Most people do not hold for more than 10 seconds so keep this time for concentrating on your shot. Try to stick to a shot routine which has 4 to 8 things on it that you can consistently do. Here’s my shot routine: 1. Hang the bow from the release rope. ( hang my bow from the release rope and put the bow between me and the target before 1 put my hand into the grip. This helps to keep me from shooting left and right.) 2. Draw the bow with the left arm straight out/stiff.

3. Obtain draw length and anchor by bending left arm. (My bow is set up a little short on draw length because I feel this allows me to aim better and at the same time it gives more string clearance from my clothes and chest.) 4. Set thumb deep on the release button. 5. Aim. (This is where the concentration and strength come in. You need to be able to hold to the spot for several seconds without letting your mind wander to other issues.) 6. Stay anchored and follow through. (I like to keep my arms and especially my bow arm between me and the target until after the arrow impacts.) Write up a shot routine of your own. Try it out and adjust as necessary. Once you’ve found a routine that works for you. write it and keep it in your quiver. If you start encountering problems refer to the routine to sec where you are going wrong.

Joella Bates Presson Signs with Darton D a rton

Archery has announced that Joella Bates Presson

is the newest addition to their Pro Staff Joella has received numerous accolades including five world championships. Pro Shooter of the Year recognition, and has been appointed National Spokesperson for the Bowhunter Education Foundation. In 1996 she conducted over 75

seminars reaching approximately 35.000 kids and already has 218 seminars scheduled for 1997 to reach an estimated 100.000 children. "We are very excited about the prospects of

having Joella represent Darton," stales Darton Director of Sales and Marketing Guy Aiderton "Not only

does

she

bring

her

tremendous

accomplishments in the competitive archery arena she also bongs a great deal of exposure for the sport through the numerous seminars she holds

in schools across Amenca. Using archery as a vehicle to convey the message that kids should not do drugs and should set high goals for themselves is something I want to be a part of' Darton has created a special bow model for Joella and shooters like her. The Elite is a high performance bow with draw lengths available of 23.5" to 26.5" and peak weights of 40. 50 or 60 pounds. This allows female archers and other archers with shorter draw lengths to shoot speeds comparable to those achieved with longer draw speed bows. The SD Mark II cam not only provides blazing speeds, it is also one of the smoothest drawing speed cams ever made. Whether you want to level the playing field on the 3D course or you just want a flatter shooting hunting bow, the Elite is in a class by itself. For information contact Darton Archery, 3540

COLLEGE DIVISION NEWS News and Notes from the world of College Archery... -> The National Archery Association has named Sheri Rhodes Director of Development and Training at the ARCO Training Center in Chula Vista, California. Sheri brings a wealth of experience to her new position. Most recently, she was Archery Competition Manager for the ‘96 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She is a former All-American at Arizona State University and went on to become the varsity archcry coach at ASU, guiding her teams to numerous national championships.

Five current or former collegiate archers are on their way to Istanbul, Turkey to represent the United States in the World Indoor Championships March 18-23. 1996 United States Intercollegiate Archery Champions Lori Mitchell of Arizona State University and Shane Parker of North Carolina State University won spots on the Olympic Bow Indoor Team along with Jo Malahy of James Madison University and Mike Gerard, former archer at California State University at Los Angeles. Jamie Van Natta of the University of Toledo earned a spot on the women’s Compound Bow Team.

-> “Varsity Archcry” is now the official name for Columbia University’s archery team, thanks to Coach Al Lizzio’s hard work. Joining the ranks of College Division clubs are U.S. Air Force Academy, Eastern Illinois University, Penn Technology, Dayton University and the University of San Diego. This year’s USIAC will be held at Texas A&M University, May 16-19. General information, entry forms, housing accommodations, etc. regarding the national championships will be mailed to all College Division clubs. -> The 1997 All-American Camp was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, January 6-10. The invitation to the camp was important enough for Jen Jordan, a graduate of James Madison University, to travel all the way from Korea where she is currently teaching English. “There arc a lot of helpful things at the camp, especially for people in transition from college archery to senior archery events.” said Jordan. “It’s good to find out what you need to know to shoot on the senior level.” The camp staff included Julia Bow ers, NAA Master Coach and Camp Coordinator; Kathy Eissinger, Texas A&M Archery Coach and College Division Program Director, Norm Graham, 1996 College Division Coach of the Year at Michigan State University; Sheri Rhodes, NAA Director of Development and Training; Judi Nelson, United States Olympic Training Center Nutri tionist, Jenny Stone, USOTC Trainer; Dr. Sarah Smith, USOTC Sport Biomechanist. Dr. Sean McCann, USOTC Sport Psychologist and Eric Lawson, USOTC Strength & Conditioning Physiologist. All-Americans attending the camp were Suzanne Barrera, Brooke Berryhill, John Blaschke, Jennifer Comedy, Bradley Gohlkc, Greg Krueger and Bethany Thomas of Texas A&M University; Scott Colston, Jen Jordan, Randy Hinkelman and Jo Malahy of James Madison University; Megan Farrell and Michelle Takach of Atlantic Community College; Lori Mitchell and Rob Shepherd of Arizona State University; Shane Parker of North Carolina State; Mike Cieslinski of Michigan State University; Sarah Hoffman of Wesleyan University and Mark Williams of Southern Illinois University.

Easton Launches the World’s Fastest Arrow Salt Lake City, Utah — Easton Technical Products, leading the world in aluminum and aluminum/carbon arrow shaft technology. introduces the fastest arrow shaft on the planet with the new A/C/C HyperSpeed This new shaft is the ultimate answer to the archers' continual search for blistenng speed and pinpoint accuracy The heart of the HyperSpeed is a precision drawn aluminum core tube, much like the popular and versatile A/C/C shaft. This aluminum core is wrapped in a super-strong, ultra light carbon fiber Joe Mason. Easton s Archery Product Information Manager said. This combination, along with our ability to manufacture to extreme tolerances of weight and straightness, is what makes the HyperSpeed super fast and accurate This shaft is ideal for speed-seeking 3-D archers and field shooters to help reduce range estimation error.' The HyperSpeed shafts are incredibly fast because they are from 45 to 60 grains lighter than their equivalent A/C/C shaft, which puts them below the AMO 6-grams-per-pound limit for most bows They are so light, in fact, that Easton is issuing a statement advising shooters to have their bow setup inspected by an authorized archery pro-shop to avoid damage and personal injury When asked for his comments about the new HyperSpeed. Easton s Senior Development Engineer George Tekmitchov. is quoted. T/Ve've taken it to the limit. it's fast, really fast. And with a wide range of ultra lightweight mbb points the HyperSpeed offers a tremendous opportunity to maintain high arrow velocity with lower bow weight." The state-of-the-art design maintains Easton s A/C/C straightness tolerances ♦ .003" (006TIR) to guarantee the same consistent accuracy that is synonymous with the Easton A/C/C. Easton's HyperSpeed uses A/C/C components including inserts, one-piece points and nocks, which match the shaft's five sizes: 2-28. 2-39, 2-49. 2-60 and 2-71 The flush-fitting A/C/C components further

enhance the aerodynamic appearance and performance of the polished black carbon surface The polished surface is quiet when drawn across a rest, easier to pull from targets and resists wear For more information about the new Easton A/ C/C HyperSpeed or any of Easton's arrow shafts and components, you may call Easton Information Services at (801J539-1400 or write to Easton Technical Products. 5040 W Harold Gatty Dr.. HOytusA Shooters Leave Vegas with More Money

than they showed up with! Salt Lake City, Utah — January 31 st through February 2nd was a good weekend

to be in Las Vegas. Particularly if you shoot a Hoyt bow. Hoyt Shooters dominated the Las Vegas Shoot winning 3 classes and taking the lion’s share of the Championship prize money. The big winners in Las Vegas were the Hoyle family. The family arrived in Las Vegas quietly but left being the talk of the tournament. After less than two weeks

with his new Hoyt Oasis Carbon Plus, Roger Hoyle turned in the only perfect 900 score giving Roger the top finish in the Compound Unlimited Championship

Division! Proud father, Rickey Hoyle, answered with a third place finish in the Bowhunter Limited Championship Division. Also in the Bowhunter Limited Division, Thomas Nothhelfer of Goodrich, MI turned in a score of 872 and captured

first place honors. Bowhunter Unlimited saw Jackie White of Moberly, MO take a close second

with a Hoyt. Classic Limited Women’s Division was completely dominated with 9 of the top 10 finishers shooting a Hoyt product. Leading the way with 1st place for the ladies was Jenny Sjowall of Sweden. In the Classic Limited Men’s Division the

story is similar with 8 of the top 10 finishers shooting a Hoyt! Leading the way were Olympians Butch Johnson and Justin Huish finishing second and third respectively. Hoyt shooters dominated the shooting line with over 40% of the total participants shooting Hoyt Bows. In the world of tournament archery no one dominates like Hoyt’s shooters!

When bowhunters or competition archers think of the name Bodoodle. it is with a sincere appreciation for rugged quality arrow rests which effectively solve shooting problems and deliver arrow launch benefits for many seasons after their original purchase The new Bodoodle Bullet Arrow Rest continues the tradition of shooting excellence which company founder, bowhunter and archery theoretician S G Christian has already well established. The Bodoodle Bullet is the new economy entry point to the patented and often-imitated Bodoodle line of arrow rests. Designed to give the shooter most of the benefits of the more sophisticated members of the line, the Bullet's design is similar to that of the Superdoodle. The Bullet features a wide yoke which assures unimpeded passage of all styles and sizes of broadhead and vane (or leather) combinations The Bullet incorporates the patented Bodoodle "pivoting yoke" which allows arrows of all sizes to oscillate in the natural arcs that make point-and-shoot arrow flight natural and mechanically repeatable; the result being superior shooting for hunters and competitors The Bodoodle Bullet delivers Superdoodle performance at an economical pnce. Subtle design changes and streamlined manufacturing procedures have resulted in an excellent all-around arrow rest like no other in its price range The Bullet is available LH or RH in non-reflective black For information contact Bodoodle, Inc.. 3301 U.S. Hwy 84N. 1st AMO Archery Trade Show a Huge Success! 1998 Site Selected The inaugural AMO Archery Trade Show owned and operated by the 43-year-old Archery Manufacturers & Merchants Organization trade association was a huge success, according to AMO President. Dick Lattimer Lattimer also announced that Columbus. Ohio has been selected by the AMO Board of Directors as the site of the 1998 AMO Archery Trade Show. Show dates will be January 9-10-11.1998 and the 2nd Annual event will be held at the Columbus Convention Center "We were thrilled." Lattimer said. To have a total of 447 exhibitors at this, our first trade show, with over 6,600 people in attendance. This number included 1.984 archery dealers and buyers The remainder of those in attendance were composed of Exhibitor personnel (2858). Media people (186), Guests (161). Show Officials (89). and Staff (50). Our exhibitors used the equivalent of 1.528 standard 10 x10’ booth spaces totalling 152.800 net square feet. The total gross footage of our show. including the Archery Demo area. ARRO’s exhibit area, seminars and meeting rooms reached 315.000 gross square feet Invoices are still coming in so the final financial report is not yet complete. but to date we have deposited 5430.000 into our "Save Our Heritage" fund to defend and promote our bow and arrow sports as a direct result of the net proceeds of our new trade show. We would like to thank everyone in the industry who helped make this happen. It was truly an industry-wide effort and we deeply appreciate it."

New AMO Officers & Board Members Elected for 1997 The AMO membership has elected the following four companies Io three year seats on

the AMO Board of Directors The person that will represent each company on the Board is shown m parenthesis: Bear Archery (Bill Krenz). Dart International (J. Dart), Easton Technical Products (Peter Weaver), and Hoyt USA (Randy Walk). At its recent meeting the AMO Board of Directors elected the following officers for 1997 Chairman - Don Vallee (Browning), Vice Chairman - J. Dart (Dart International), and Secretary/ Treasurer - Guy Aiderton (Darton Archery). Officers are elected for one year terms. AMO Regular members are eligible tor seals on the Board of Directors. New “Save Our Heritage” Grant Committee Members Three new members of the ’Save Our Heritage" Grant Review Committee have been elected by the full AMO Board of Directors according to Dick Lattimer. President. Each year three members rotate off the Committee and three new people are elected The three new members elected to three year terms are Dale Voice (Bohmng). Dawf Forbes (Hunter s Specialties), and Randy Walk (Hoyt USA). With the advent of the new AMO Archery Trade Show the funding source for this highly successful industry program has changed Formerly, about 70 archery companies paid a portion of their worldwide sales of archery equipment into the "Save Our Hentage" fund and those companies were the only ones eligible to sit on the "Save Our Hentage" Grant Review Committee to determine how those funds would be allocated. Now that 100% of the net proceeds from the AMO Archery Trade Show goes into the "Save Our Hentage" Fund those companies will no longer have to support the defensive and promotional fund as they had been doing in the past. Now everyone who attends or exhibits at the AMO Archery Trade Show helps pay into the fund by virtue of their exhibit and/or entry fees Now all AMO Regular members are eligible to sit on this nine-person Committee If you would like your name considered for a 1998 seat on the "Save Our Heritage" Grant Review Committee simply notify the AMO Office in wntmg. The AMO Board of Directors elect these folks. Since the beginning of the "Save Our Heritage" program in 1992 AMO has given out 51.542,118 in "Save Our Heritage" grants to both defend and

promote the sport. Dunng 1996 AMO gave out 5531.115 in grants, the largest was 5100.000 to the bowhunters of Michigan to fight the antibowhunting ballot issue in that state.

1997 AMO “Save Our Heritage” Grants Approved The AMO Board of Directors has recently approved a number of 'Save Our Heritage’ grants for both promotional and protection programs according to AMO President, Dick Lattimer The grants totalled $108,964 and indude funds for youth archery, collegiate archery, interactive bowhunter education, women's archery, a new school archery program, traveling consumer outdoor show archery booths, and a state grant to fight the anti-hunters. The largest amount approved by the Board was an increase of $50,000 in 'Save Our Heritage’

funding for use in the new AMO School Archery Program currently under development in a pilot program phase in the northeastern states This

brings the total approved for this new youth archery program up to 5100.000. The pilot dealer training program was kicked-off in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania in November 1996. It will not be available nationally until a later date A 510.000 "Save Our Heritage" grant was approved for an Interactive Bowhunter Educational Video program being sponsored by the National Bowhunter Education Foundation Another 510.000 in funding was set aside for building the traveling archery shooing booths designed by the AMO Dealer Council These are used at consumer outdoor shows, county and state fairs, and other public gathenngs to introduce new people, particularly youth, to our bow and arrow sports A grant of 57.000 was also approved for manning the above booths at four Midwest Deer Classics m 1997 A grant of $7,884 was approved for use by the Police Athletic League (PAL) in their archery outreach program to communities who do not yet have a PAL archery program Over the past five years PAL has set-up over 60 youth archery programs with AMD's financial help Again in 1997 AMO is helping to sponsor the highly successful "Becoming An Outdoors Woman" program with a grant of 56,000 In 1997 the program will be held In 47 states and 8 Canadian provinces. Archery and bowhunting are a major part of this ground-breaking program A grant of $5,000 was provided by AMO to the National Archery Association (NAA) for use in the production of a video to be used to interest outsidethe-industry financial sponsors for future archery events. This video has now been completed and is hard at work. 54.080 was approved by AMO for the 1997 United States Intercollegiate Archery Championships to be hosted by Texas A&M University Target Archers at College Station. Texas For more than 20 years AMO has helped fund the National 4-H Archery Program and has approved another $4,000 tor the 1997 session For about the same length of time AMO has funded Bob Markworth's School Archery Demonstration Programs and another $3,500 has been approved for his 1997 events These introduce thousands of youngsters to our bow and arrow sports And. finally, a "Save Our Heritage" grant of $1,500 was made to the New Hampshire Wildlife Federation for use in their pro-hunting legislative program for 1997 to fight several anti-hunting bills that have been introduced into their state legislature
