What a way to start the year off. record turnouts for the two shows I attended, the Bowhunting Trade Show and the National Archery Show The Bowhunting Trade Show boasts 6,000 dealers attended 369 exhibits in Louisville January 8-10 The National Archery Show and Las Vegas Championships took place at a new location, the Sands Expo, which accommodated both events very easily One hundred fifty-seven exhibits (30% increase over 1992) were visited by about 3600 dealers and archers Over 1400 archers vied for the titles and money These events were followed by the first Archers Shooters Association Florida Invitational held in Gainesville, Florida, on February 20 and 21 Wayne Pearson and his staff. HOW THE 1993 DESERT SHOOTOUT WILL WORK By PETE SHEPLEY The 1993 Pete Shepley Desert Shootout will break new ground in competitive archery Competitors will be invited to participate in Match Archery, a new system of shooting which involves shooter ranking, a new target system and hit/miss scoring. A broken balloon is considered a hit Each group of four shooters will have an official observer assigned to that group who will go from target to target with the group keeping track of their scores Shooters will be competing against comparable archers so that archers who are ranked "1", "2" and “3" will compete together. Archers ranked "4". "5”, and ”6" will compete against one another, and archers ranked "7”. "8". "9" and "10" will compete As a round of 40 arrows is completed, the field will be cut in half. These cuts will continue to be made until a winner is crowned in each class Class One will be ranked shooters of 710, Class Two will be ranked shooters of 4-6 and Class Three will be ranked shooters of 13 $250 high round money paid in each of the ranks 7, 8. 4. 5, 1 and 2, in addition to the money paid for 1 st through 25th place in each of the three classes So it is feasible for a person to win first place in his class and also win $250 for high score in his rank Upon completion of the Individual Accuracy Round on Friday, a Sponsored Team Accuracy Round will be shot. A Sponsored Team is made up of four persons. They may be sponsored by a distributor, a pro shop, a city or state club, any organization or possibly any other archery manufacturer Team members may pay their own entry fee and enter as a group under any name, if they so desire. The Sponsored Team Accuracy Round prize money cannot be applied to the overall grand total prize money which makes you eligible for the pickup truck. Shooters who participate in the 1992 Pete Shepley Desert Shootout will be required to shoot the Individual Accuracy Round on Friday. This is primarily intended to enable the tournament officials to validate everyone's ranking and to allow the shooter to become accustomed to the new targets and rounds they will be shooting on Saturday and Sunday. Friday's Individual Accuracy Round and Sponsored Team Accuracy Round should provide some exciting preparation for Saturday and Sunday's Team Accuracy Round and Team Lightning Rounds.

Saturday’s Tearn Accuracy Round will involve five events. Shooters should come Io this event with a few dollars in their pockets and at least two dozen arrows in their quivers Saturday's shooting will be fun, quick paced and allow you to get to know all the other archers in the tournament The Team Accuracy round will involve shooting the same five distances shot the previous day during the Individual Accuracy Round. Prize money for each Rank/Event will be boosted and shooters will have more chances to win money on Saturday than on Friday The first Rank/Event will be a "6'' total event This means that two shooters whose ranks total 6 or less may shoot as a team in this event Each shooter may enter up to three times with different team members each of those times Each time he enters it will cost $10 ($20 per team). This gives the shooter three chances at 1st through 25th place in each Rank/Event Being a ”6" total Rank/Event, the first event will be made up of teams primarily of shooters of 1,2, 3. and 4 rankings The more proficient. higher ranked shooters will not be able to participate in this event This event is intended to equalize competition between all rankings Prize money for all events will be paid as the events are wrapped up and winners crowned The Second Rank/Event to be held will be a ”9" total event, a "12" total event and a "15” total event. The last Rank/Event to be held will be an Open total event This last event is intended to allow the top shooters to team up to compete against one another for prize money The 1-6 Rank shooters will probably want to sit this event out. So you see that Saturday's shooting will involve a lot of camaraderie between shooters and hopefully enable everyone to get to know one another at the Shootout a little better Shooters will all wear their Rank number on their back The tournament will supply back tags with everyone's Rank number This will enable other shooters to sort out who they want to approach in order to make up their teams for the different Rank/Events Saturday s shooting should prove to be a good appetite builder for the Western barbecue on Saturday night at Pete Shepley’s ranch. hosting the NAB Big Game Awards Sunday morning opens the door to a whole new realm of shooting It is called the Team Lightning round The Team Lightning Round involves a Team's total elapsed time for two arrows and the number of hits they make to determine their score. There will be six events on Sunday: A Draw Pot Event, a Rank/Event of 6, 9, 12, 15, and Open. Each one of these events may be entered up to three times by one individual with different team members each of those times As Sunday's shooting progresses, prize money will be paid at the end of each event This will enable shooters to use their winnings to enter other events. A running total will be kept forthose in contention for the grand prize, a 4X4 pickup truck, to be given away on Sunday afternoon. THE QUEST FOR IMPROVEMENT By FREDDIE TRONCOSO EDITOR'S NOTE: The following article was written prior to the Easton Seminar, featuring Coach Park from Korea and Vladimir Echeev of Russia! Make sure to look for the special coverage of the seminar and interview with these respected World Class Coaches in the next upcoming issue of THE U.S, ARCHER! Very little information has been wntten about shooting, form, and equipment related to the sport of archery While it is recognized that these writings are helpful and do an excellent job of starting newcomers out in archery, very little has been written about elevated techniques pertaining to championship shooting that may benefit top-flight shooters including those with aspirations of wining an Olympic medal for archery The higher the level of shooting, the greater the demand for perfection and machine like performance by the shooter. Unknown by many archers, is the fact and realization that it is not fair to repeatedly keep tuning or blaming your equipment when your performance is not up to par Equipment alone does not produce "perfect'' scores It is the ultimate ability of the archer that is the determining factor of any good shooting1 Looking back through many years in archery. leads us to conclude that long and repeated practice sessions do not necessarily contribute to good shooting - that is, not if you are not practicing correctly The adage ’’Practice makes perfect” isn't necessarily completely true. Most archers merely practice their mistakes over and over again which only serves to make worse any ingrained bad habits acquired Opinions of several of yesteryear’s great shooters profess that practice and shooting from short distances is best for all archers regardless of shooting styles Several of those great archers have advocated that shooting from shorter distances is best because sight adjustments and compensations for wind and weather do not have to be taken into consideration. By practicing indoors, a shooter can concentrate on perfecting his/her shooting form and thus readily see what significant changes related to form and thus equipment have on the achievement of optimum groupings and improved accuracy If one cannot group arrows successfully shooting from the distance of 18 meters, how in the world can he expect to group them tightly at 90 meters? Unfortunately. distance is relevant and adversely opens up our arrow strike patterns when shooting from afar. The greater the distance from shooter to target, the larger the margin of error. The sport of archery is basically a very simple learned skill However, there are several basic principles that must be learned and mastered before anyone can hope to achieve consistent accuracy and success The underlying principle and key factor governing all phases of archery is reoetilign and exact duplication of each shot as best as humanly possible. It is thereby imperative for the archer to be able

to execute each and every shot in the same manner as the one previously shot and released. Common knowledge tells us that "basic" shooting form is comprised of the draw, anchor. hand placement on the grip, head positioning, aiming, release and follow-through. All these steps should be practiced to the point they become almost automatic. Optimum performance and success in archery completely depends on EXACTING REPETITION of shooting form and all related steps that make up the shot

OBSERVATIONS AT BARCELONA OLYMPICS STANCE - The majority of shooters applied and used the parallel stance or slight oblique stance. Note #1 - Recommended Technique Use of the parallel stance imposes a natural built-in limit with regards to left swing of the bow arm by a right handed shooter. By standing with both feet 90 degrees to the line of flight, the swing to the left side by the bow arm is lessened considerably! Note #2 - Not Good- Use of the "Power Stance” or radical exaggerated oblique stance allows the bow arm to swing farther left due to the reasons stated beforehand

HAND GRIP - Most competitors favored the loose grip employing the use of a bow sling or finger sling RELEASE - The best shooters at the Olympics recoiled minimally. Not too many archers utilized the exaggerated fly-away release FOLLOW-THROUGH - The best shooters all applied emphasis on follow-through and good solid form. ANCHOR POSITION - Most archers used the under the chin clef anchor. Also seen were several archers anchoring along side of the face made popular by compound shooters Experience dictates that the side of the face anchor works best for compound shooters due to the fact that the bowstring exits straight forward with reduced paradox and contortions of the arrow when using a mechanical release device. Finger shooters on the other hand, must remember that the jump to side of the bowstring associated with releasing the bowstring with fingers causes the string to jump to the side the split second the archer starts to open his fingers. Unknown to the archers who use this method of anchoring, left and right dispersal of arrows are usually attributed to this oversight. If the archer turns his head slightly to the right (however slight), the arrow will impact slightly left and remain a total mystery to the shooter in most cases

Review of the above observations and commentary reveals that the basic concept and choice of stance appears to be a matter

of preference and that the stance must be consistent, comfortable, and solid However, the merits and benefits of the parallel stance should be worthy of your trial and experimentation The main ’’plus" of the parallel stance is its ability to lessen the "swing to the side" which thereby serves to improve the

follow-through A solid bow arm should be held perfectly straight or bent according to your physical stature The bow arm should be held in place from the time the arrow is drawn, until the arrow hits the target if one expects to shoot respectable scores No matter which way the bow is held, the hand grip should be natural, loose and not exaggerated or forced Whatever method you elect to choose, do not grab nor squeeze the handle of the bow at the moment of release The release or "loose" of the bowstring should be a natural occurring phenomenon that ideally occurs a split second after you hear the sound of the clicker The release itself should be a combination of relaxing and opening of the fingers so that the hand recoils slightly backwards along the side of the face When you are at full draw, your main objective should be to aim and release as best as possible while trying to keep the bow from swinging off course at the moment of release Your efforts should be directed to keeping the bow sight aimed at the center until the arrow hits the target' To develop good followthrough. aim "dead center of the spot", release and hold your position until the arrow hits Look at the Impact point of the arrow and take notice of where your bow is aimed as the arrow strikes the target. Example if your bow has dropped low and left, your arrow has in all probability hit low and left During your next shot, try hard to think about moving the bow back to its original aimed position at the instant of release. In doing so, you will eventually find that your bow will not noticeably move during or after you turn loose of the bow string. AIMING, RELEASING AND FOLLOW-THROUGH ARE IMPORTANT! When you are at full draw, the main objective should be to aim, release and to keep the bow aimed until the arrow hits the target Once you have perfected your aim and followthrough, the rest of your shooting should all come together. If you doubt the accuracy or validity of this statement, simply watch the Korean women shoot and see for yourselves what good shooting form does for these great archers - GOOD SHOOTING FORM WORKSI

who are in contention for the pickup truck. It should prove to be quite an exciting afternoon of shooting. Right now a lot of this may be very confusing to the average archer and we hope that some of the instructions we've written out will make the round more clear to everyone who is planning to attend the 1993 Pete Shepley Desert Shootout. The most important part of preparing for the 1993 Pete Shepley Desert Shootout is obtaining your Rank number First of all, send us copies of score cards you have from other shoots, indoors or outdoors, in the previous year. This will give us a good idea of your proficiency. Also, along with your score cards, please indicate what type of equipment you were shooting at the time you shot these scores. Secondly, shoot the official ranking target in accordance with the rules printed on it and send that along with your registration. You will be issued an I M.A. membership card which will have your rank number on it. You will need this at the tournament site to pick up your winnings. Remember that the type of equipment you will shoot does not determine the class you will be shooting in. You will be ranked according to your ability and according to the score you shoot. For instance, you may be shooting against a person shooting bowhunter equipment and you may be shooting freestyle equipment, but because of his skill, he shoots the same scores you do Or, you may be shooting against someone with no sights, but because of their skill they shoot the same scores you're shooting In the event you decide to change equipment during the tournament, certain restrictions are in place which would change your ranking For example. if you decide to go from non-moveable pins to moveable pin. you would move up in rank. Going from fingers to a mechanical release would also change your ranking It will be important to remain consistent in your shooting and remember that accuracy is

the key to the entire game Even on the days when time is involved in your score, it is important to hit the balloon every time you shoot The best advice we can give for preparing is to practice on a four or five inch spot. Shoot the distances you will be shooting (40-60 yards) and keep track of the number of hits you have Only count the hits, don’t count the near hits Keep in mind shooting at the center of this 4 or 5" circle. It will not be scored as a better hit but it will increase your chances of becoming more accurate in the long run Sunday’s team lightning round may require you to use some different shooting strategies It will be important to get your shot off very quickly in an efficient manner. It would be a good idea to practice this type of shooting before you come. You don't necessarily need to change your style or equipment, you just need to execute your shots in a very efficient manner Try to become very comfortable with the loading of your arrow and your release aid so as not to use up time with wasted energy and motion Shooters who will do best on Sunday's round are those who shot consistently and accurately the two previous days. Don't speed up so fast as to impair your accuracy 1 believe the 1993 Pete Shepley Desert Shootout Match Archery Round will be a round that is enjoyed by all levels of shooters It will also be a chance for all levels of shooters to shoot for prize money unavailable to the average and novice shooters in the past We also believe that once you've tried this round, you'll want to shoot more and more of it. EASTON RENEWS CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP The corporate sponsorship agreement between Easton Aluminum and the National Archery Association has been renewed through May 31, 1996 Peter C Weaver. President of Easton, and Don Marcure. President of the NAA signed the renewal agreement recently in Las Vegas. NV. at the National Archery Show Marcure stated, 'On behalf of the NAA Board of Governors and the entire membership, we are extremely proud and pleased to continue our corporate sponsorship with Easton * The first agreement became effective June 1990 The Easton sponsorship will allow for the continuation of several NAA programs. Among them is the Easton incentive award assistance which covers additional funding to be paid to NAA clubs who host national and trials events each year. For 1993, a total of $17,000 covering 20 tournaments will be distributed to host clubs

1994 JOAD BIDS NEEDED It's not loo early for JOAD clubs to be thinking about 1994 tournaments. Bids will be due in the NAA office by September so that the JOAD Committee can make their recommendations to the Board of Governors at their October 1993 meeting

The agreement also includes support of the NAA Newsletter which has recently merged with THE U S ARCHER magazine, press releases and tournament programs. Additionally, clothing and supplies will be provided for the NAA's three national teams. USAT. Jr. Elite USAT and Unlimited USAT, and the residents athletes currently residing at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs Clothing for world teams selected to represent the United States and the NAA, to include coaches and support staff, will also be provided. The agreement requires the NAA to identify Easton as a sponsor of the NAA on scorecards and tournament registration forms for the identified competitions, and on press releases. Easton will also be allowed to hang banners at the events in prominent locations. Weaver noted, 'We at Easton are proud to be associated with the NAA and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship * Also, the 1994 JOAD Outdoor Nationals will be held in the Northern region the second weekend in July Northern JOAD clubs interested in bidding on this event need to do so by the September deadline as well. NAA members competed for spots on the World Indoor team at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 7-10,1993 The top three men and three women from both recurve and compound divisions comprise the team that advances to the second World Indoor Championships held in Perpignan. France, in March 1993 In the men's compound competition, James Despart of Resselaer, NY. was the decisive winner with 14 points. Despart is the defending PAA Outdoor National and Atlantic City champ Second place was Unlimited USAT member. Kirk Ethridge of Rogersville, TN, with 8 5 points Number one ranked PAA archer from '88-'91, Dee Wilde of Pocatello, ID, came in a close third with 8 points Alternate is Thomas Crowe of Molalla, OR The compound women's division saw Inga Low of Roseville, CA, shoot past her mother Charleen Low. also from Roseville, for total points of 11.5 and 10. respectively. Glenda Doran, Redmond. OR, who placed first in the trials in '91, placed third with 7 points after losing a first day lead. Theresa Fozio. Brunswick, OH. is the alternate with 6.5 points. After moving from fourth to second to third, Richard (Butch) Johnson, Woodstock, CT, had 7.5 points. Jay Barrs of Mesa, AZ. moved into the alternate position after falling from third to accumulate 7 points 1992 Olympians, Jennifer O'Donnell, Farmington Hills, Ml. and Denise Parker, S Jordan, UT. claimed the top two places in the women's recurve division O'Donnell, who placed third at the '91 trials, came in first this year with a score of 14 points. World indoor record holder, Denise Parker, had a second place finish of 13 points to make the team she narrowly missed making in 1991. Michelle Jolly of Mesa. AZ. came in third with 5.5 points. Judy DeVoll, Topeka. KS. lost to Jolly in a shoot off-29 to 24, to become the alternate. The one-on-one match competition of the elimination rounds consisted of quarter, semifinal and final rounds. Archers shot 15 arrows in each pass and earned ranking points depending on win/toss results. This format helps to meet the needs of archers who are still gaining practice with the new style of match play competition. Mike King of Kentwood, Ml, and Wendy Erlandson of Mesa. AZ, will combine their nearly 50 years of archery experience to serve

JOAD ARCHERS ACHIEVE OLYMPIAN The following is a list of current eligible JOAD archers who have attained the highest level possible in JOAD archery-Olympian To achieve this level the archers progress through different ranks in various sanctioned tournaments shooting ten ends of three arrows For the indoor recurve division Olympians must shoot at 18 meters on a 60 cm target face with a score of 290. JOAD NATIONAL TEAM JOAD archers who have attained the rank of Olympian before May 1, 1993, and whose 18th birthday falls after the tournament date of July 10, 1993, are eligible to apply for the JOAD national team. This year’s national championships will be held in West Mifflin, Penn , on July 10-11, 1993 One girl and one boy from each of the four regions will be chosen by the JOAD committee for an all expense paid tnp to the championships. Selection will be based on the top four places for each archer based on the following point system for scores shot between May 2. 1992, and May 1, 1993.

CLUB NEWS Editor’s Note JOAD Club News will be featured in each issue of THE U S ARCHER to inform JOAD enthusiasts on club activities around the nation The focus this issue is on a group of JOAD clubs along the Rocky Mountain Range from Colorado Springs to Cheyenne, Wyoming, who decided that a 'rotation tournament', along this 150 mile stretch, would allow the young archers tournament experience and the opportunity to compete and show off their skills in a friendly organized fashion. The plan, started about four years ago and which includes five JOAD clubs, has provided the much needed experience along with great fun and camaraderie for everyone. Tumbleweed JOAD archers from Cheyenne, coached by Jim Murkin, were unable to attend the January tournament. Three cheers to these fine JOAD clubs and to their leaders for their dedication to youth archery! EQUIPMENT INSPECTION AT THE COLORADO JOAD ROTATION TOURNAMENT

JOAD TRAINING CAMPS National JOAD training camps will be held at the U.S Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs, June 18 to June 25, 1993, and Lake Placid. July 22 to July 30, 1993. Young archers will receive instruction in shooting, equipment and maintenance, tuning, goal setting, tournament regulations and etiquette, exercise programs, nutrition and mental management. Applicants must have: ' attained the rank of Master Archer * competed in a NAA state, regional or national outdoor sanctioned tournament within the past 12 months ' and be at least 13 years of age Registration fee is $50 Shooters must provide their own transportation to and from the camp Food, lodging, and training will be provided at no extra cost. Registrations for both training camps must be in the NAA office by May 1, 1993 There are only 25 beds available for each of these training sessions There are always more registrants than space available; therefore, a drawing will be conducted on May 3, 1993, at the NAA office to determine who will be attending. All registration forms will be placed in a bowl and names will be drawn until all 25 spots have been filled for each individual location. As soon as it is determined whose names have been drawn for attendance, a confirmation packet and required U.S. Olympic Training Center forms will be forwarded to the parents of the athlete Nancy Myrick will serve as camp director for both camps. COLORADO JOAD'S ROTATION TOURNAMENT Four JOAD clubs and a team comprised of the U.S Olympic Training Center (USOTC) resident athletes participated in a rotation tournament in Colorado Springs on January 17. 1993 Bear Valley JOAD of Englewood. Golden Arrow JOAD of Colorado Springs, Colorado Gold JOAD of Aurora and Queen City JOAD of Broomfield, met at the Golden Arrow Archery Center in Colorado Springs for their monthly team tournament. There were a total of 31 participants in this month's event, which rotates the hosting site at each tournament. The team winners based on average scores in each division of the indoor JOAD round tournament were: Cadets: Colorado Gold JOAD Juniors: Queen City JOAD Intermediates: USOTC athletes Cadet Compound: Queen City JOAD Junior Compound: Golden Arrow JOAD Highest Score: 578-Clayton Kovar Golden Arrow JOAD In individual categories, the top shot in the adult ladies division was Jennifer Peavy. USOTC, with a score of 549. Dan Givens of Golden Arrow JOAD won the adult gentlemen's division with a 548 The cadet ladies division was won by Mackenzie Royal and the cadet men's by Scott Doida, both of Colorado Gold JOAD. Their scores were 431 and 548, respectively. In the junior division, Olivia Trujillo, Bear Creek JOAD. was the winner of the ladies with a 256; and Mark Stabler also of Bear Creek JOAD won the gentlemen’s division with a score of 530. Jodee Border of the USOTC won the intermediate ladies with a score of 535. Clayton Kovar, Golden Arrow JOAD. won the intermediate gentlemen's and the highest tournament score with a 578. In compound competition. Matt Fitzgerald of Queen City JOAD won the cadet category with a score of 376; and Shawn Wexler of Golden Arrow JOAD won the junior category with a 520. Archery instructors from across the United States met at the US Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs for the first NAA Instructor Trainer Program held on January 21-24 Thirty-four instructors of various levels were invited by chair of the coaches development committee. Myrick and Brown developed the program in response to the many calls requesting classes. The NAA expects to certify over 1000 instructors this year, according to Brown, to fill the growing number of requests Instructors from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii attended the three-day training program. Del DeMeritt, a Level 2 instructor from Fairbanks. Alaska, was instrumental in organizing one of the first JOAD clubs. The Arctic Foxes, in Alaska last fall. "Alaska is so remote we don't have anyone to teach up there, so this program will allow me to go back and share what I learned with the rest of them and hopefully get more people interested in teaching," he said. During the program, instructors were introduced to new teaching materials, guidelines, and were given the opportunity to share their ideas with others. The training courses help ensure that participants in archery are taught by qualified instructors who are able to provide them with a safe enjoyable introduction to the sport All levels of instructors learned something from the diverse group of people assembled at the program. Julia Bowers. Level 5 instructor from Lancaster, Penn , said that techniques and programs are always changing and the course gave her the opportunity to learn about these changes Cathy Korby, Level 2 instructor from Willow River, Minnesota, came to the course with hopes of learning specific information on teaching courses. She felt the program met that objective, while also giving her "the extra spark" she needs to get more motivated with her club. Brian Faust, a Level 3 instructor from Portland. Oregon, would like to see more young instructors involved in teaching. "In meetings like this one we have set a great foundation for new coaches coming in, and they can bring in new ideas and make it even better," he said. Faust, who was on the Arizona State Archery team from '87-'91, plans to eventually reach the national coach level. CONTINUED

The clinic focused on the development of basic archery skills combined with cross country ski techniques for carrying the bow. plus shooting from skis on the snow Two indoor archery clinics of three and four hours were followed by a half day training and practice session on the snow The event was highlighted by a team competition on the final day Archery instructional methods used for the clinic included "Nine Steps to the Ten Ring’, ’mimetics’, and video tapes. The Lake Placid skiers were quick to develop the fundamentals and were very enthusiastic about the future of the new sport 'This competition has all the challenges that will draw athletes to it. The physical exercise of cross country skiing and the mental side of archery combine to make the ’Nine Steps to the Ten Ring", nine giant steps to win at ski-arc," Tracy Lamb. U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL '93 - UPDATE By MARTIN SWANSON ARCHERY COMMISSIONER The 1993 US. Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas, is almost here Competition is scheduled to take place between July 24 and July 29, 1993 Presently, the archery venue is at Our Lady of the Lake University. Unfortunately, at the commissioner's meeting last year, this

was not a site that was under consideration. so I have not seen it personally. Jim Downs. Logistics Director for the Festival, is forwarding a survey and photos of the site for my review. The local organizing committee is presently negotiating with a number of businesses and corporations for equipment and other needs Hopefully all the negotiations will be fruitful. Regarding the archery competition itself, we have broken it into separate individual and team events, with a day off between the completion of the individual competition and the team round Individual competition will take place from July 24-27, and the team round will be held on July 29 It has been decided to use the new 'Olympic Rounds' which were shot in Barcelona, in both the individual and team competition in San Antonio. to the extent they can be In order to accomplish this, we will be making a cut to the top 16 men and women after the first two days of individual competition in order to facilitate groupings for the various elimination and medal rounds The first two days of shooting will be a standard two day FITA round The next two days will be the elimination and medal rounds for the top 16 men and women from the first FITA Following completion of the individual competition. July 28, will be a day off and/or practice day for everyone. We are trying to see if we can organize the team round so that all archers can compete in this portion of the competition If and when we work this out, it will hopefully be published in a future issue of this publication. In regard to officials for the tournament, our director of shooting will be Wendy Ertandson, judges are Shen Rhodes, chairman of judges. Karen Cearley, Sandy Gottlieb, Bud Simon. and Jacob Veit-alternate. Sounds like a great team of officials. Our local sports coordinator is a very ambitious gentleman named Roy Bridgman I'm looking forward to the Festival and hope we will have the best one Io date. I know the USOC and San Antonio staff, as well as the NAA office, is working hard to make it so I will be attending a second commissioner's meeting later this spring and will keep the NAA office posted To all who will be participating in the trials in May. NAA USOF ’93 TRIALS SELECTION PROCESS This is to inform archers participating in the regional trials on how the regional teams will be selected The process to be followed was established by the NAA Board of Governors in 1990. As most of you know. 24 recurve male archers and 24 recurve female archers will comprise the final team that heads for San Antonio for the USOF '93. Here's how each regional team will be named. At the conclusion of each two day FITA regional event, the top four men and top four ladies from each region will be named to the team The last two spots for both the men’s

and ladies divisions will be filled with archers selected from the U.S. Archery Team (USAT) '92 ranking system. The archers from the USAT ranking system must have shot the event. The only modification to be considered is as follows: in the event that a USAT archer cannot attend or compete in a regional trials competition because that person is participating in an event sanctioned by or supported by the NAA. or is representing the NAA in such an event, that archer would not have to have shot the regional trials, but could be eligible based upon the USAT ranking

AMO GRANTS S27,000 FOR INSTRUCTOR TRAINING Archery Manufacturers Organization (AMO) has approved a $27,000 grant for the Camp Archery Instructor Training Program through the Easton Sports Development Foundation. This money will help introduce archery to over 225,000 kids this year by allowing for training of Level 1 and Level 2 instructors in camps and youth archery programs The grant will permit 100 instructor training courses to be held in 1993, reaching over 1000 Level 1 basic Instructors. This projection is an increase from the approximately 700 certified in 1992. Grants of this type are used for instructor materials and travel costs For more information on the allocation of the grant, contact Lloyd Brown at Easton, (818) 782-6445. The approval of this grant is part of the AMD's year old ‘Save Our Heritage’ program. This program is based on voluntary donations from the 50+ manufacturers and distributors of a portion of every archery product they sell worldwide The NAA also helps fund this program The nine member grant review committee and the AMO Board of Directors both serve voluntarily and at their own expense Thanks to these people and all donators to the program for their interest in promoting archery. “UNITING THE WORLD'S BEST" ARCHERS 1994 GOODWILL GAMES U.S. athleteswill begin receiving invitations in 1993 to compete in the 1994 Goodwill Games held in St. Petersburg, Russia. The event. which will be take place from July 23-August 7, 1994, will showcase 2500 of the world's best athletes from over 50 countries One male and one female archer will be invited by Russia, and two more archers will be selected to comprise the four member U.S. archery team. Each event in the Goodwill Games has at least one competitor from Russia and one from the US. Archery will be making it's debut at the games being held in St Petersburg Archery's inclusion in the 24 sports of these games was the decision of the Olympic Committee of Russia (OCR) ’The sports were selected based on their popularity worldwide and in Russia,’ Aleksandr Lozlovsky, OCR vice president, said.The Goodwill Games began in 1986 with R E. ’Ted" Turner's belief that the world's top athletes should be able to compete in an environment free from the political pressures that resulted in the boycotts at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Summer Games. The inaugural games were held in Moscow and the 1990 event was held in Seattle. The 1998 games will be held in New York City The Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg will be the first major international multi-sport competition held in the former Soviet Union since the dramatic political changes that have rewoven the fabric of that country forever. Although the winds of change have swept through Europe, the need for goodwill and understanding among the nations of the world still exists. In fact, the need may be greater than ever as countries work toward building new and lasting friendships with ’enemies of old" and strengthening ties with previous allies. Reebok International Ltd. has just been announced as the first sponsor of the games. They will be the official performance athletic footwear and apparel sponsor of the Games.

Don Marcure, NAA president, has been named Chairman of Judges by FITA for the 37th World Target Championships to be held in Antalya, Turkey, in September This marks the fourth appointment at this level for Marcure. his first as chairman. In this position he will supervise all judges for the event ensuring that the championship is run fairly. Marcure, who has been involved in archery for over 20 years, has been the NAA president since 1991 after serving four years as vice president. He was elected as a South Region Governor in 1985, and served as chairman of the NAA Officials and Rules Committee for eight years He is currently owner of Don Marcure and Associates, a publishing company in Plantation. Run 1 05 miles in 12 minutes That's how it started in 1992 with a rule laid down by Nancy Mynck, by way of some military standard. for the simple task of making sure any USAT candidate met basic simple physical needs My major form of exercise is bike riding. culminating in several hundred mile bike rides The 1991 Alamo Challenge comes to mind-Houston to San Antonio-187 miles over two days The highlight of 1992 was the Hotterthan-Hell-Hundred in Wichita Falls, attracting 13.245 riders At the end of long rides, the leg muscles are the most susceptible to adverse pain If you have knee problems, the pain will be greatly amplified, and sometimes excruciating The recovery time is short if you train well and you’ll be anxious to go again very shortly FROM BIKING TO HIKING So, after archery practice. I would trot around the field for 10 minutes Anymore than that in the hot Texas sun could be detrimental to one's health, mine By the time the '92 Nationals rolled around. I had not attempted a run over two miles I was pleased to have completed the 1.5 miles in the required 12 minutes, but was not happy with the energy it required After Nationals of that year, I thought my running was over But I started running more than biking Especially since I planned to hike the Grand Canyon in October, after the Duel-in-the-Desert trials in Tucson That was quite an experience as I hiked down Bright Angel Trail from the South Rim, 12 5 miles to the river, in four hours. I rested, took in the beauty of the Colorado River, and prepared to crawl out of the largest hole and greatest living history book in the world. I hiked back up the 7.5 miles on Kaibab Trail Mother Nature got my full attention. Each step kept going up and up and up and I thought I would never reach the top It was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time It took four hours of steady climbing to reach the top, and a sudden rush of euphoria. It would never have been possible without proper exercise THE CHALLENGE Again I thought I was done running, but five co-workers got me interested in an upcoming

Houston marathon Idiotic was my first reaction In my mind a marathon is a direct insult to the human body. It takes six months of proper training, especially for a beginner I had less than four months if I chose to accept this mission I did My weekly training consisted of two or three runs during the week and a long run on the weekend The weekly mileage started at 10-15 and culminated to 35-40 My longest training run was 18 lough miles Where would I find energy for eight more? I need to mention that I don’t particularly like to run, especially on flat ground It seems like drudgery, and if I didn't have a particular purpose. I see running as meaningless 8ut-something happened along the way as I got into shape The breathing was under control, the heart-rate decreased, and my mind was everywhere but six feet above the 26 various bones in each foot In fact, the legs and feet gave out much sooner than the heart or the mind. The first couple miles are the hardest and then I hit a glide pattern that feels good from three miles to about 12 miles It gets hard after that The last week before the marathon I spent resting I needed a lot of it as I had caught a nasty cold. My mental capacity would now be challenged as well. JANUARY 24, 1993-THE DAY Five thousand three hundred and twenty seven official runners in this 21 st annual event Half would be expected to finish I planned on being one of them, but had no Idea what the residue of the cold would do over such a demanding task that lay ahead I was both anxious and cautious.

I was told not to get caught up in the mass rush Maintain the training pace of 10 minute miles for at least 15 miles and relax as much as possible Seize the moment and enjoy the day. A windy and cool 48 degrees greeted us as we started our journey Mile number one came quickly as I was streaking along at nine minutes. I was paced by a co-worker for the first 10 miles as I stayed with his 9:35 pace We only stopped long enough to drink water

every even mile and exceed on the odd miles At fourteen miles, I changed shoes and socks. I also discarded my wool cap and cotton gloves I kept the long-sleeved T-shirt as the wind chill never subsided I relished this change/rest stop. My pace now settled to a slower 10 minutes per mile. Mile 18 was the first challenge, as this is as far as I have ever gone before, and I was already slower than any training run. An ominous thought, but if all else failed, it would

I remember what Harry Calahan said in Magnum Force, ‘A man should know his limitations’’ Sometimes you have to know when to quit. At every mile from here to mile 23,1 would stop for liquid and to he down in the grass to stretch out the calves. This usually added a full minute or so to each mile but it was necessary to recoup to be able to finish The breathing is good, the brain says go. but the lower body wants more ’time-outs.’ Somewhere near mile 22,1 heard numerous footsteps approaching and chuckled as a group of four silver-haired people sauntered on by These seniors seemed quite relaxed as they chatted about their grandchildren, and sitting at home watching golf. I felt humbled and envious Three more miles to go and I was running on empty The cold hit my chest with some wheezing and the stomach was sending signals Time to make a decision. For the next mile. I would run a little and walk a little, run a little, walk a little. It was evident that by mile 24, the running phase of this operation had come to a grinding halt I had to walk the final two miles as all my reserves were depleted My nagging cold and passive training had taken its toll. At mile 26,1 made a faint attempt at running the final 352 yards My time was a far cry from the winning 2:13, but anyone finishing was a winner LEGENDS IN OUR OWN MINDS Almost 43 years old and I had competed and completed my first marathon. I was tired, the muscles were stiff, but I felt great My dehydration level was excellent as I had stopped at only one port-a-potty, somewhere around mile 18. Sixty percent of post-marathon injuries come from not re-hydrating over the next three

days My T-shirt was fairly dry as I did not sweat excessively. My weight loss was also minimal as I now weighed three pounds lighter than when I started. That evening is when the muscles stopped working and the knees locked up The trip to the hot tub was tough but the next hour was most pleasant The rest of the evening had much restricted movement till I applied ice to both knees. The knees moved well enough for me to make my way to the night's final resting spot I walked funny the next day but two co workers never made it in until Tuesday Monday was a ’muscle-memory day* and by Tuesday. I was back to normal...or . abnormal Over-active sports are cases where sore and depleted muscles remind you of what is wrong A kind of reverse muscle memory. However, the mind only remembers the good things At the point of over-exertion, the body, the muscles, and the pain tell you how much fun you aren't having and that you will never do this again. The muscles forget in a few days and the mind takes over and tells you what a great thing you have accomplished. And you can't wait to do it again sometime Forget the bad. remember the good How does this help my archery? Who knows if it does or not! But any discipline requires work, training, and effort

The 1993 PAA Indoor National was held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center on Friday and Saturday evenings after the Vegas Shoot The shooting line at this new facility stretched more than 650 feet to accommodate 110 targets, which were more than adequate for the 1400 plus shooters that competed in the world's largest indoor tournament - the 1993 Vegas Shoot Prior to the beginning of the first round on Friday night awards were presented to the 1992 PAA Grand Champions, which prompted Field Captain Dick Huyett to remark, "this has to be a first, you are giving out awards before the tournament starts!" Recipients of the 1992 Grand Champion Awards were Michelle Ragsdale. Dee Wilde (winning for the fourth time in as many years). Richard Johnson, and Tricia Johnson and Dahrl Suttner, who tied in the ladies limited division I then had the great pleasure of awarding the Karl E. Palmatier Award of Excellence to Ed Rohde The PAA has held forty-six outdoor and indoor championships since 1963 - and Ed has competed in every one of them - winning three indoor titles and one outdoor title. Thirty years ago Ed also won the NAA men's title in Los Angeles. Ed is truly dedicated to the sport of archery and is well deserving of this honor. As an archery historian I feel I should point out that both Ann and Earl Hoyt have each shot in over fifty NAA indoor and outdoor championships since 1939 Next in line would probably be yours truly. who has shot in thirty-eight NFAA outdoor and indoor national championships since 1952. Shooting started at 7 p m for the first forty-five arrow round of the 1993 National Indoor A single line was shot so the entire round took only one hour and thirty-five minutes to complete. At the end of the first round Tricia Johnson led the ladies limited division with 435 points Manhelen Rogers had 430 points and Dahri Suttner 429 points The unlimited ladies division was led by Inga Low

with 447 points followed by Michelle Ragsdale and Paula Weissend with 446 each. The men's limited division first round leader was 1992 outdoor champion Randall Holland with 446 points Only 1 point behind were Tim Strickland and Richard Johnson at 445 The men's limited division had Jeff Rogers, John Taylor. Bill McIver. Dee Wilde. and Tom Crowe all with perfect 450 rounds (not to mention the nine 449 rounds posted in this division) Before continuing with the final round on Saturday evening, I would like to mention that the PAA is very proud of its members who are part of the U S National Team They were selected at the NAA team trials to compete in the World Indoor Championships in France this March and we wish them the very best They are Dee Wilde, James Despart. Kirk Ethridge, Inga Low, Charleen Low. Glenda Doran. Richard McKinney. Richard Johnson, and Denise Parker All of these outstanding archers were on the shooting line at our indoor national The ladies limited championship was won by Denise Parker, who posted a total of 859 for the two rounds Tied for second were Tricia Johnson and Dahrl Suttner at 854 It was a very close contest with Denise taking over the lead on the thirteenth end of the final round The ladies unlimited division was tied at the end of ninety arrows with Inga Low and Kim Zehr each having a 893 Kim posted a 448 final round to go into a shoot-off with Inga In the ensuing sudden death inside-out scoring the winner was Inga Low after one arrow Glenda Doran and Michelle Ragsdale, the 1992 indoor champion, tied at 889 points for third place In the men's unlimited division Jeff Rogers continued to hold off the thirteen competitors that were just 1 point behind - and with only one end of three arrows to shoot Jeff still held a perfect string of 30's over five intense competitors. Earl Ulnch. Nic Nichols, and many more. Meanwhile. Earl decided to continue his college career in engineering and another floozy' romanticized his life That is, his love of music By 1927, Earl was playing on stage and in 1932 was playing banjo solos twice a week on WIL Radio. He also formed a twelve piece orchestra which flourished until the advent of war in the 40's By 1932, however, archery was beginning to 'claim her prize' and Earl joined the Louis Archery Club During the War, Earl was employed in the engineering department of Curtiss Wright Aircraft Corporation and later MacDonald Aircraft Corporation: at both locations. Eart assisted the recreation department by organizing archery clubs In 1942, the war brought an end to the pnvate construction business which was his father's livelihood Ear! convinced his dad to go into the archery business with him under the name of Hoyt Archery Company Finally in June of 1946 Earl left his engineering job and devoted his full attention to the development of a new bow. Earl has received much pleasure from the bowhunting side of archery. He and his faithful hunting companion, Ann, count some of their most pleasurable hours as those spent together on hunts. Ann Weber became Earl's bride in 1971 and the union has been one of the most successful in archery history Together Ann and Ead have given numerous seminars, shot tournaments, and helped both the professional and amateur enjoy the sport Honors such as the Maurice Thompson Medal of Honor, induction into the Archery Hall of Fame, championship shooting titles, and numerous game trophies count among those most cherished by Ead. The industry has relied upon his expertise many times while he served as a member of the Standards Committee for the Archery Manufacturers Organization (originally called AMADA) and serving as their president in 1964 Ear! has said archery is not only a vocation but an avocation for him. ANTONIO REBOLLO On July 25. 1992. in one breathtaking moment, the eyes of the world watched as the spotlight focused on Spanish Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo. For weeks, the cabinetmaker from Madrid had practiced for this very moment Dressed in traditional white. Rebollo drew back his recurve bow and aimed at the Olympic cauldron His keen sense as an instinctive shooter prevailed as he released the famous flaming arrow and sent it sailing through the mght sky to ignite the Olympic torch. Not only did this event become the symbol of the Barcelona Olympic Games, but it made Antonio Rebollo a significant part of Olympic history. Born in Madrid in 1955. Antonio contracted polio when he was only eight months old As a child, he was always looking for ways to become more physically fit At the age of twenty-two, he started shooting a bow and arrow, and like many other physically challenged athletes. archery soon became his first love. When Antonio was called on to audition for the flaming arrow shot, he found himself up against some of the country's best archers 102

In the end, it was his ability to consistently make what is known as “an instinctive shot" that gave him the edge Because the shot would be made into total darkness. Antonio would not be able to rely on a bow sight To insure a consistent shot. Rebollo picked a spotlight on the tower of the cauldron and lined it up with his bow limbs When Antonio was tapped for the honor. just a few short days before the Opening Ceremonies, he began working with a sports specialist on concentration and relaxation, both of which play an important role in the sport of archery However, when he stepped onto the platform and saw the enormous crowd, he momentarily lost concentration He quickly regained it and hit the shot of his life. "I was so happy, not only for myself, but also for all of the people on the organizing committee who had put so much work into this project," said Rebollo of the memorable shot As his skills in archery have grown, so has his list of accomplishments Antonio took second place in the 1991 CEE Championships and has been a member of the last three Spanish Paralympic teams In 1984. he won the bronze medal at the Paralympics in Los Angeles and went on to win the silver medal at the Seoul Paralympics in 1988. In Barcelona, not only did he shoot the flaming arrow, but he led the Spanish Paralympic team to a silver medal. Presently, Antonio and his wife Angelica live in Madrid where he is now a local hero. For a cabinetmaker, gaining worldwide recognition seemed like a dream. However, in

one brief moment. Antonio Rebollo made that dream a reality and walked away with a great accomplishment and story to share with his grandchildren I had the opportunity to talk with him and I was impressed by his modesty to his spectacular shot "Any high cahbur archer such as was attending this event could do what I did " After ten years on the Spanish Team Antonio decided to decline a possible position on the Olympic Team to go for this feat Antonio, a 1300 FITA shooter, was one of six finalists selected out of three hundred Spanish archers January 1992 they started to tram for the task During the training with his seventy pound bow. Antonio had burned the back of his bow hand due to the flames and winds that circulated in the stadium. Even this didn’t deter him from pursuing that special position only one person would get to do When I asked him if this had changed his life in any way from his cabinet making and designing furniture, he says. Dee "Perfect'' Wilde had a perfect weekend going home 52,000 00 richer If you think this was exciting for him. what would you feel like if you nineteen year old son, Reo, had just won his Open Championship Division minutes earlier Dee and Reo had already shown their shooting skills on the Thursday evening prior to the main event by winning both divisions in the Experimental Shoot Out Just seven years ago Dee came on the scene as a rookie in 1986 and now Reo who started serious indoor competition last October has fit archery into his college schedule. years old. won first tournament when I was five, won first NFAA National Indoors at age of sixteen in the young adult freestyle limited division During 1982-83 I was involved in intercollegiate archery I turned professional in 1984 al the age of 20 Archery has always been a part of my life, from targets to hunting, ever since I can remember This is mostly due to my parents since they have made archery the biggest part of their lives and it all rubbed off onto me There has always been a competitive nature wrapped up somewhere inside myself, so I always try to do the best I can whenever I am shooting and to learn as much as I possibly can from others Frank Pearson has been an inspiration to me as he gives of himself to those who want to learn and I have taken advantage of his expertise in equipment and performance knowledge. One of my favorite tournaments was the NFAA Outdoor Nationals in Darrington. Washington, in 1988 where Don Kudlacek and myself placed second in the World Team Championships. But this is probably the summer I will remember best as I have done fairly well in the tournaments that count the most first in both NFAA Indoor and Outdoor Sectionals. third in Shepley’s Desert Shoot Out. second at the Big Sky Open, and first in the World Team Event where Kirk Ethridge and I shot for Martin Archery Working together as a team, we helped each other throughout the three days of shooting I had my goals set on this particular event and succeeding made the win most satisfying It's hard to define why archery, of all sports. is in my bloodstream, but I do know it's there to stay and I don't find it difficult to keep trying to improve. After I made the second cut. which was my worst score of 58.1 started to concentrate even harder When it came down to the last two ends. I was in the zone Butch. Tim and myself had 30's on the first end On the second end my first and second arrows were tough. but both 10's When I was drawing my third arrow I thought. I don't want to have a shoot off! That arrow was the easiest but hardest arrow I ever shot and it was an inside-out 10 I would like to thank everyone that was rooting for me • my fiance Christy, my parents, and all my good friends from California and Washington • Other "Stars" besides Reo Wilde, winning top place of $1,000.00 in their divisions were Ronnie Smart - Bowhunter Barebow, David Henderson- Bowhunter Limited, and Bill Fleet - Bowhunter Unlimited "Stars" winning the Gold for the amateur adults were Joseph McGIyn - limited men, Jennifer O'Donnell-limited women. Troyene, who was about four years old at that time After about a couple of months shooting with my new recurve and missing the target most of the time. I was having second thoughts about this sport until one of the members m the club noticed that I was closing my right eye to shoot a right-handed bow So off to the local archery shop to fit myself with a left handed bow Compounds were not very popular nor widely used at that time in Australia but. always wanting to do things the 'hard' way and after trying one of the compound bows. I was well and truly hooked1 (And I could even hit the target at last). The year followed I entered tournaments whenever I could and had a winning streak until we decided that we should take time off to see Australia and the rest of the world After about three years on the road, we arnved In England where we picked up archery again It was hard after the long lay-off to get back Into the swing of things but we were taking it

easy and went around mostly shooting m field tournaments Then came the IFAA World Championship in Scotland where I did poorly I was very disappointed since I was expecting to pick up where I left off three years ago. A lot of coaching, tuning, hours of hard work from my husband, Troy, and two years later back in Australia, I was winning tournaments again. Then we decided to open the first commercial indoor range here thinking that I would be able to practice archery more (Were we wrong!) I did not have time to attend any tournament To make the most of our indoor facility I started to practice for the Vegas Championship After a year s hard work, words could not describe the feeling when I realized that I had achieved my goal - winning one of the greatest tournaments MOST MEMORABLE ARCHERY EXPERIENCE: Participating the Las Vegas Indoor shoot and winning the championship WHY I LIKE ARCHERY: I like it because it is an individual sport which requires not only physical but also 100% mental approach ANY MESSAGES TO OUR READERS? In four short years the Bowhunting Show has grown to over 360 exhibitors who used over 575 booth spaces Show growth as follows 1990 90 exhibitors - 122 booth spaces 1991 242 exhibitors - 375 booth spaces 1992 257 exhibitors - 425 booth spaces The 1994 Bowhunting Show will take place January 28-30 in Louisville followed closely by the National Archery Show and Las Vegas Shoot on February 4-6, 1994

Due to expanded booth space for current exhibitors, sixty-four present exhibitors couldn't be accommodated at the 1993 site so the 1994 Bowhunting Trade Show moves to the Commonwealth Convention Center (CCC). The South Wing B of the CCC at the Fairgrounds can hold 897 booth spaces on one level. Ample hotel rooms are nearby and information will be sent to all exhibitors.

While at this years Bowhunter Show I had the opportunity to spend some time with David Jr. Mike and Bob Gordon of Gordon Plastics Inc , (GPI) based in San Marcos. California GPI produces pre-cured composite laminates under the trade name BO-TIFF™. POWER-TUFF™, CORE-TUFF™, and UNI-CORE™. which go into about 65 percent of the bows produced worldwide From the beginning they have supplied composites for the archery industry and currently supply over 90% of the industries’ needs Over forty years ago. three ambitious Gordon brothers - George (a chemist), David (an electrician) and Don (a designer of corrugated fiberglass) joined forces to form GPI They manufactured fiberglass for water skis, diving boards, bow components and a few auto bodies After a few years the focus became the rapid growing archery industry In the late 1950's 300,000 to 500,000 Gordon Glashafts were produced in sizes 25 pounds to 80 pounds in five-pound increments Then in the mid 1970's the grey Graphlex shaft was introduced with the Graphlex-XT's following Both arrows contained graphite and were very popular with the hunters In 1983 a fiberglass tent pole company offered to buy the machinery and tooling its poles were made on. Some of it was the same as arrows were made on so the machinery and tooling was sold and the arrows division was closed During these years the bow limb materials kept expanding until it is 65 to 70% archery today Over the past few years the management staff has changed to the three sons. Dave Jr, Mike and Bob According to Dave, today they produce a million pounds of fiberglass which is the equivalent in length of six times around the world. He says. "We continued to serve OEM accounts and small users too We work with the manufacturers to improve systems and go to the next level of refinement. Our goal is to have the leading edge on the best customer product and service so we can remain at the level of about 60% of all bows made in the world “Presently we make 400,000 units in our 44,000 square foot plant manned by fifty employees ” When asked what was the key to GPI success. Dave stated, "I believe we have the best people in the industry and we treat them good In our 401K retirement plan we match half of every dollar they put in After researching HMO plans we found the best and pay 80% of the premium. The "Black Mamba" is a totally new concept in bowhunting sights; the innovative precalibration concept makes this the most unique sight in the world. It is a five pin sight that is pre-calibrated between 20 and 60 yards in ten yard increments After the 20 and 60 yard pins are adjusted, the 30, 40 and 50 yard pins are precalibrated It is all machined from aircraft-quality aluminum with stainless steel pins. It is guaranteed with a lifetime warranty. The unique quality of the sight gives it several distinct advantages over ordinary sights. With the "Black Mamba" there is no need for wrenches. Allen wrenches, or pliers. All five pins lock down simultaneously with a four way locking system This locking system insures that there will be no movement and no vibration after repeated shooting. The sight will accommodate shooters with both very fast and very slow bows Those shooters with a spacing between their 20 and 60 yard pins of from 1/2" to 1 5/8" are accommodated by this sight. The sight includes both vertical and horizontal dovetails. The horizontal dovetail has a scale for micro adjustment. The entire sight is adjustable for the left handed shooter as well as the right handed shooter. ADJUSTMENTS If the shooter knows the vertical distance between the 20 and 60 yard pins for his equipment, then preset that distance by loosening the four locking screws and sliding the entire mechanism forward or backward to that spacing Next, the archer should shoot in the top 20 yard pm This is accomplished by adjusting both the vertical and horizontal dovetails. Once the 20 yard pm is on, the next step is to shoot in the 60 yard pin. If it is a little off, slide the entire pin-guard mechanism forward or backward to pick up the 60 yard pin adjustment. Once the 20 and 60 yard pins are set, the 30, 40, 50 yard pins will be precalibrated If the shooter does not know the vertical distance between the 20 and 60 yard pins, then preset the pins at a one inch vertical spacing. Then, sight in the 20 yard pm and check the 60 If. when checking the sixty, the pm guard mechanism has to be slid over 1/4 of an inch, then

reset the 20 with the dovetails and again check the 60 This process should be repeated until the proper 20 and 60 yard vertical distance is found. Once this distance is determined, this distance will be the starting point for all subsequent adjustments of the sight NOTE If the shooter has a real fast bow with light arrows, the 30 yard pin will shoot on an average of one to two inches high; this is normal and should be compensated for by shooting The 40, 50 and 60 yard pins will still be dead on To slide the pin-guard mechanism 1. UPDATE ON MCPHERSON’S MOVE TO ALABAMA Changes, new places and faces continue with McPherson Archery In January of this year Tom McMillan Jr and Tom McMillan III purchased McPherson Archery and began the move from Austin. MN. to Brewton. AL Clearly this move has caused difficulties in maintaining arrangements with suppliers and manufacturing processes During the early stages of the move, a third party made a bid to operate and to purchase a significant share of McPherson However, the McMillans decided this plan would not meet the goals and vision they have for McPherson Archery Rather than take less interest in company operations, the McMillans have taken on more involvement with operations and have made significant commitments to see that McPherson meets their goals and vision Indeed, evidences of the commitments are now in place In the month of June. Tom McMillan III came to work on staff fulltime with McPherson operations, manufacturing operations were moved to a newly constructed facility. "SAVE OUR HERITAGE" GRANTS GO OVER THE QUARTER-OF-A-MILLION DOLLAR LEVEL GAINESVILLE. FL - The stunning success of the Archery Manufacturers Organization (AMO) "Save Our Heritage" program continues to grow The two latest grant approvals bring the total amount given out from this unique new program to date over the quarter-of-a-million dollar mark AMO President, Dick Lattimer has announced that two additional grants in the year old program were approved recently at the Annual AMO meetings held in conjunction with the 4th Annual Bowhunting Trade Show in Louisville. Kentucky A grant of $50,000 was approved for the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America (WLFA) for it’s pursuit of amendments to the federal Endangered Species Act that will protect and advance the interest of bowhunters, other sportsmen and wildlife management programs The Endangered Species Act is up for "re-authorization" in 1993, which opens the entire legislation to amendment. A major effort is underway to vastly expand the reach of the ESA which could greatly restnct hunting and scientific wildlife management programs A coalition of sportsmen's groups, including AMO. has been put together by the WLFA to assure that pro-hunting amendments will also be put forth for the ESA An additional grant of $27,000 was approved for the non-profit Easton Sports Development Foundation and it's Camp Archery Instructor

Training Program This effort offers NAA Certified Level 1 and 2 training for instructors in camps and youth archery programs The grant will permit one hundred instructor training courses to be held during 1993, reaching over one thousand Level 1 Basic Instructors. Through this program, more than 225.000 kids will be introduced to the sport of archery during 1993 The National Archery Association also helps fund this program. In making the announcement. Lattimer said, "All of us in AMO are delighted that our new "Save Our Heritage" program is working out so well. These two new grants bring our total given out to date to $260,663 The fifty plus manufacturers and distnbutors who are participating are to be congratulated for stepping forth to help "protect and promote" our sports of bowhunting and target and youth archery in this manner I'd especially like to stress that 100% of the "Save Our Heritage" funds go toward these grants There are no expenses deducted Any costs necessary to run the program come out of our regular AMO operating budget ” In addition. "Lattimer said, "our nine person Save Our Heritage Grant Review Committee serves voluntarily, and at their own expense This is also true of our AMO Board of Directors All are to be commended for their donation of time, travel funds and talents to the support of AMO. our sport and industry in general, and the "Save Our Heritage" fund in particular The "Save Our Heritage" fund comes from the voluntary donation from the 50* manufacturers and distributors of a portion of every archery product they sell worldwide All products carry stickers or artwork calling attention to the fact that their purchase contributes to help AMO protect and develop bowhunting and target archery
