I have moved from my large home to a smaller home. Sounds like someone who is thinking about retiring, right. Well, it isn’t always that easy. The large home sold in a month which was good. Now for the magazine to get a new owner. That hasn’t been as easy. A few people have been interested but no definite changes have taken place so it is still my responsibility. While doing the July/August issue I placed a Texas S3DA article on page 52 of this issue
What is the Texas Kinetic Kids S3 DA Team? when I came across the words, “Kinetic Kids.” Now where have I been that I missed hearing about them until my 37th year of publishing the US Archer magazine. Kayla Bolton who sends us the S3 DA articles was researching her information for the names of “the man and the boy cradling the Hoyt bow” in the Texas article. I had assumed it was a father and son but I was mistaken, it was the Texas Regional Coordinator and his Kinetic Kids team member Dennis “Trey” Lively. Then one morning I think it was “Happy Monday Morning” I got a call from a gentleman who identified himself as Roger Koss. I told him I had been looking at him and Trey in our latest issue. What a joy it was to hear about the Kinetic Kids and their

S3DATeam from him. His comments are on page 53 where he states that he would like to see teams all across the world have Para Teams to connect and compete with each other. Remembering everybody’s friend, Stewart Bowman
In memory STEWART BOWMAN Archery has recently lost a dear friend - Stewart Bowman. He passed away suddenly and
very unexpectedly in late May from natural causes. Original ly from Canada, Stewart moved to Phoenix in 1986 in search of more shooting opportunities. He launched a successful archery business with his innovative “Bowman Accuriser”. He was a very active member and support er of the archery community. He frequently operated a booth at the Vegas Shoot and NFAA major shoots, displaying his uniquely designed bow. He was instrumen tal in establishing the Ben Avery FITA archery range that is used for the International Arizona Cup. Several years ago Stewart moved his business to Kingman, AZ and
operated the Desert Archery shop until his passing. He was active in all types of shooting sports, en joyed riding his motorcycle and racing his Mustang. He was hap pily looking forward to retiring to his new property in Golden Valley where he would be able to devote his time to his many hobbies and other projects. And oh yes, Gold en Valley would be closer to the Laughlin buffets. Stewart never met a buffet he didn’t like! Be ing always personable and out going, Stewart had no shortage of friends. His stories could make you laugh till you cried. Archery will miss you, Stewart. God rest your soul.
Brady Ellison Breaks World Record and USA Men’s and Mixed Teams Break Continental Records to Top Pan American Games Qualification

LIMA, Peru - The Pan American Games is a prestigious multi-sport continental championship that runs every four years in the year prior to the Olympic Games. Recurve archery is on the program for the 11th time, and compound archery makes its debut this year, as a step on the path toward Olympic inclusion. Like the Games, athletes from all sports reside in the Athlete Village and with Olympic quota spots on the line in many events, the atmosphere is intense and exciting. World Champion Brady Ellison posted a 708 in practice yesterday, putting the world on watch for a new record. Since Rio 2016, no one has broken a 700 in competition, until today. Ellison's smashing 702 raised the bar and put another notch on the belt of his most incredible season to date. "1 finally got it," commented Ellison. "I have been shooting some amazing scores in practice and when I stepped onto the field today, I knew I had the weather. I'm not going to lie, I was nervous at the start, but I just had the feeling that everything was going to hit today, and I would break it. "I had a 56 to close out the first half and that made me a little mad. I wanted a big first half so I could relax but I just shot a 350 and knew 1 had to keep pushing and make every arrow count. 1 shot back to back 60s in the second half and just relaxed. I knew 1 had
it then. The last end I wanted a 60. My first 3 arrows were tens. I knew I only had to hold gold and just shoot one good one at a time and I would get it. Those were the 3 hardest arrows I have shot. I shot 9-9 then the last one I just smiled and told myself'you got it bud. Just shoot a ten and make it better.' The last arrow went off very middle and I knew it was good. 702." Jack Williams also had an incredible morning, scoring a personal best 689 to seed 3rd and teammate Tom Stanwood was 8th with a 666, putting Team USA solidly in first with a new continental and Pan American Games record of 2057 (previous continental record was 2032 and Pan Am record was 2006). A personal best 662 for 15-year-old Casey Kaufhold, the youngest archer at the Games, put her 2nd for the recurve women behind Mexico's Alejandra Valencia. Teammates Khatuna Lorig, the defending Games Champion, and Erin Mickelberry were 6th and 8th with 642 and 636 respectively, and put the team 2nd behind Mexico. Kaufhold and Ellison's combined 1353 also set a new continental record for the mixed team event, which also makes its Games debut in Lima and will make its Olympic debut next summer in Tokyo. This is so critical because a gold finish in the mixed team event here will guarantee Team USA a women's spot for the Tokyo 2020 Games along with the men's spot earned at the World Archery Championships earlier this summer. World number one and world record holder Braden Gellenthien opened compound archery's Pan American Games debut with a qualification topping impressive 712. Gellenthien thinks putting on

TOKYO, Japan - The leadup to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has seen three-time Olympian Brady Ellison in the best shape of his career. Finally healthy, finishing on three world cup podiums this year, including two gold finishes, winning the World Championships and earning the World No. 1 rank, Ellison is on fire. The Olympic Champion title is the last major accomplisiunent evading Ellison’s impressive resume, and possibly the biggest. The Ready, Steady Tokyo Test Event is a preview of what is to come next summer. Yumenoshima Park will host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and unlike the last two Games, which were contested in iconic venues of the host nation, this is a new and modem facility that will leave a legacy as a permanent archery range. The Test Event is a dress rehearsal that allows archers to compete in a preliminary version of the venues. Ellison battled a rainy qualification to rank second with a 677, just two points behind Korea’s Kim Woojin. Then, like the Games, all individual elimination matches were shot one at a time on the big stage. With no room for error, Ellison was lights out, breezing through his first few matches. Until the semifinals, Ellison never put an arrow outside of the gold; scores of29,29,30,30 gave him a 7-1 1 /8thround win and he pulled off a strong 6-2 quarterfinal win after that. Korea’s Lee Seungyun posed a challenge in the semifinals. Ellison took a 2-0 lead, but Seungyun’s three consecutive sets of perfect scores brought the match to 5-3. The two split the final set with 28s, but the set point gave Seungyun the win. Ellison then shot against the Netherland’s Sjef Van Den Berg for bronze - a rematch of his individual final from the U.S. Archer Inc. 36th Anniversary
Rio 2016 Games. The match went in Ellison’s favor again, as it has all six times the two have gone head to head in international matches, with an exciting back and forth before he clinched the 6-4 victory, finishing with a perfect 30. Ellison gave his first impressions of the venue to World Archery: “I think it’s going to be pretty protected but I think it’s going to be hard to read the wind. All week it’s been a headwind. With the big back wall behind the targets, you don’t see it on the flags on the targets until it comes from the side and is a true sidewind. So we’re going to have to rely a lot on feeling and then the flags on each side of the field. Overall, I think we’re going to be able to shoot some big scores on here.” He added: “1 think you do gain a certain amount of advantage just with familiarity. You’ve been there, you know kind of what to expect. Everything that we learn with the wind we can bring into next year. I’m excited because I think Japan has a big archery history to it and I think the fans here are going to understand and want to come watch us compete. The Award, named for the 1960 founder of JOAD, is presented to an individual who has shown continuous support of the program throughout the years. Recipients of this lifetime achievement award have gone above and beyond in their involvement and service to the sport of archery and have made a significant impact on their local or surrounding communities. Coach Cindy Bevilacqua has been involved in the sport of archery for over 50 years, as a decorated JOAD archer, collegiate champion, beloved international team leader, celebrated coach, accomplished teacher, passionate community advocate, and her contributions to the sport have made a deep and lasting impact on the archery world. Level 4-NTS Coach Bevilacqua began archery with her father as a hobby that would shape the rest of her life. A two-time All American, named twice to the United States Archery Team, inducted into multiple halls of fame including James Madison University’s, Coach Bevilacqua’s most notable roles have come from her 35 years of coaching. Cindy was one of the youngest coaches ever to receive a coaching certificate from The World Archery Center, and in 1996 she was named Developmental Coach of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee. Registration is open for the 2019 USA Archery National Symposium, a conference designed for coaches, athletes, parents and club leaders to take their athletes, clubs and abilities to the next level.The Symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Houston Intercontinental Airport, Houston, Texas on October 18-20, 2019. Previously known as the Coach Symposium, this event has been rebranded and expanded to include sessions for athletes, parents and club leaders. Attendees can expect various key breakout sessions led by experts in a variety of coaching, leadership, and archery related fields. USA Archers Lock Up Women’s Spot for Tokyo and Top Podiums with Big Pan American Games Wins

LIMA, Peru - Capping an absolutely stellar week for USA’s archers at the Pan American Games, all Team USA recurve archers topped the podiums in today’s finals and locked up a women’s quota spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Icing on the cake; World Champion and World No. 1 Brady Ellison, who set a new world record in qualification earlier this week was selected as Team USA’s flag bearer for the closing ceremonies later tonight. Casey Kaufhold, at just 15 years old, is the youngest archer at the Games. Joining forces with veteran Ellison, who set a new world record in qualification earlier this week, the two stormed the mixed team event. Seeded first, the strong duo took some impressive wins, including strong scores to take gold today over Colombia. The win garnered Team USA a women’s quota spot for next summer’s Olympics (USA Archery already has a men’s spot following Ellison’s world championship win). “Shooting with Brady is always fun. I always shoot almost always my best when I shoot with him because he gives me confidence like nobody else does,” Kaufhold told World Archery. “It’s just great to be able to shoot next to him and compete with him. He’s just one of the best teammates I could ask for. It’s such an honor to win the medal with him.” “Winning the mixed team gold, it’s good,” shared Ellison. “Casey shot good, I felt like 1 shot good. And it’s a huge relief for the women to have one spot because now we can all just go do our jobs... now that we know we have athletes going [to Tokyo].” With the win and the quota spot locked down, Kaufhold, five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig and Erin Mickelberry returned to the stage to fight for the women’s team title against a strong rival team from Mexico. Despite an equipment failure for Kaufhold in the first set causing her to shoot without stabilization for the first two arrows, the team fought through a dramatic four-set match to take the win. “1 could not be happier. I have great teammates and it’s a great team,” Lorig shared, impressed with her young teammate’s cool head in the crazy first set. “In 30 years of experience, this is something I’ve never seen, how she handled that.”

Ellison and teammates Jack Williams and Tom Stanwood also clinched the bronze in the men’s team finals 5-3 over Mexico - splitting each of the last three sets in an incredibly tight race to the finish. Kaufhold and Lorig took the finals stage once again, head to head in the women’s semifinals. Lorig took a 4-0 lead, but Kaufhold battled the match back to a 4-4 tie. Coming down to the final three arrows, Lorig won out by just a point to advance to the gold final - a chance to defend her title from 2015. Shooting with Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia. The two experienced Olympians shot a close back and forth match. At the half, the two were tied 3-3, but Valencia held in the gold, taking the last two sets and the win, leaving Lorig with silver. Kaufhold matched Colombia’s Ana Maria Rendon for bronze, where she smoked a 6-0 shut out with high scores and 9 arrows that never left the gold. Kaufhold leaves her Pan American debut with a full sweep of podium finishes. Kaufhold shared: “I definitely feel honored to be able to compete for my country - and to bring home three medals for them is even better. Archery's mass participation indoor circuit returns in November. The six tournaments on the calendar of the Indoor Archery World Series in 2019-2020 season have been announced with a competition in Sydney joining last year’s list of hosts in Luxembourg, Macau, Rome, Nimes and Las Vegas. All of the events are open entry, meaning archers can register themselves and athletes do not have to be part of a national team. For the second year, the Indoor Archery World Series will have both elite and open rankings. Athletes accrue elite ranking points with high placings at each stage. The 16 athletes in each competition category with the most elite ranking points after the last stage in Las Vegas are invited to compete in the Indoor Archery World Series Finals. Every archer that competes across the tour will receive an open ranking, which is based on the three best 60-arrow qualification scores shot over the season.

Twenty of the Americas' best archers contested the inaugural compound events at the prestigious quadrennial continental championships in a significant push toward eventual Olympic inclusion. Paige Pearce, the reigning world target silver medalist, world field champion and world indoor team champion had a tough bracket with many strong competitors in the lineup. She qualified fourth and battled her way to the bronze final against Argentina's Gonzalez Briozzo. Pearce took an early lead, and only dropped one point on the finals field to finish with an outstanding 149-143 win. "Being the first U.S. compound women to attend the Pan American Games meant so much to me," commented Pearce. "But to be walking away from this week with a medal is unlike anything I have ever felt. With this being the first games compound has been allowed to attend, this is a medal and an experience ] will never forget!" World No. 1 Braden Gellenthien was a standout from qualification with an impressive 712 and earned a spot in the gold final against El Salvador's Roberto Hernandez. Hernandez pulled ahead after the third end and while Gellenthien fought back over the last three arrows, he finished with silver 146-147. "I feel incredibly honored to be representing Team USA as the first compound shooter invited to the Pan American Games," Gellenthien shared before his final match. "It's a giant step forward to one day representing the USA in the Olympic Games - which I hope to see happen in my career's lifetime." Competition concludes tomorrow with recurve finals where the Team USA women will officially earn their first quota spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison will tackle the mixed team gold final and Kaufhold, Khatuna Lorig and Erin Mickelberry will also shoot for the women's team gold before Kaufhold and Lorig go head to head in the individual semifinals and then shoot individual medal matches. DUBLIN, Ohio - The 135thU.S. National Target Cham pionships and 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials - Archery, Stage 1 wrapped today with the second 72-arrow scoring round. National champi ons were crowned following some of the best weather USA Archery has seen at an Outdoor Nationals and many new national records were set in an exciting day. Team USA has locked up one men’s and one women’s spot for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games so far, with World No. 1 Brady Ellison earned the first spot at the World Archery Champion ships in June and Casey Kaufhold earned the women’s with a mixed team win at the Pan American Games just days ago. The defending National Champions Ellison and Kaufhold took the wins again today with huge margins over the rest of their fields and definitively lead the

Olympic Trials process thus far. Kaufhold broke the double 70 national record with a 1314, taking the win over Eliana Claps by 17 points, while compound su perstar Crystal Gauvin pulled a big bronze finish with a 1276 on the Road to Tokyo. Kaufhold commented: “There was more wind today, so I made sure I was cautious, paid attention and still made the good shots 1 made yesterday. Some were in, some were out, but I tried to focus on the positive, keep go ing, and 1 didn’t know the previous record and am glad it wasn’t in my mind to put pressure on me.” On leading the Trials, she added: “It’s definitely a confidence boost and a relief and I’m happy to pick up the bonus points for a good start.” Ellison agreed: “I felt like my shot was a little off the first half, I was still catching some but it wasn’t quite there and then as
soon as the wind started blowing, I started shooting better. It was a weird wind on the field today that not a lot of us saw, but still a lot of people were shooting pretty good. I’m happy to win another one, happy to be leading Trials, but wish I could have shot two 680s instead of 670s but I’m feel ing good and looking forward to Texas [for stage 2 of the Trials].” Ellison finished first with a 1351. 16-year-old Josef Scarboro came between Ellison’s world team members Jack Williams and Tom Stanwood, finishing second with a 1330 over Williams’ 1325 and Stanwood’s 1321. Crowned National Cham pion, Louis Price took a massive win in the compound senior men’s division with a strong 1426, while Matt Sullivan and World Cham pion James Lutz took silver and bronze with 1415 and 1413 re spectively. World No. 1 Alexis Ruiz won another National Champi on title, clinching victory in the final arrows after a multi-way tie headed into the final end. Ruiz’s 1388 pulled ahead of Sophia Stra chan and Savannah Vanderwier’s 1386s: “Yesterday went really good. Today started really slow ly, I lost the lead, so I told myself to put together a good six ends to finish it out, changed my mindset and it went a lot better. I don’t like to know the scores, so after the last end, everyone was hugging me, and I was shocked to find out I won after the start I had today. for the 2020 Paralympic Games and shattering her personal best by over 60 points. “Coach MJ Rog ers helped so much with working on my bow arm pressure, and just keeping at it,” commented Ravish. “It feels absolutely incredible to win this event, it was a great day.” WI Jason Tabansky also set a new record with a 1224 finish. World Champion Ben Thompson edged out Paralympic Champion Andre Shelby by two points with a 1370 to claim the compound open men’s gold, while Martha Chavez won gold for the compound open women with a 1275. Linda Klosterman had a big 20-point record to win the com pound masters women 50+ di vision with a 1350: “1 struggled through three of the rounds and only had one mediocre round, so I didn’t realize it would be a record. I think I won this tournament in like 1994 or something, when it was the old style FITA round, but 1 started shooting some again in
2012. It feels good to finish with the win.” Scott Rissinger also broke the recurve masters men’s 50+ record with a 1286 win. Competition continues to morrow with the U.S. Open. With over 500 archers at this record-breaking event, scores were tight and as the af ternoon grew windier, extra chal lenges were thrown into the mix. Spectators were welcomed with a free nacho bar and adult beverages were available for purchase. 15-year-old Casey Kauf hold took the recurve women’s win at the Target Nationals, in between major medal finishes at the Pan American Games last week and before she headed to the World Archery Youth Champi onships later in the day. Shooting strong through the brackets, she met five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig in the gold final - a rematch of their semifinal in Lima, where Lorig was again victorious, 7-3.

“I’ve been shooting in the wind for a long time, this win feels great,” shared 7thseeded Lorig. “My qualification score was low er than I expected - I’m exhausted from international trips. Louis Price was the big win ner for the compound men - de stroying the qualification rounds with matching 713s in what is likely the widest margin win of the season. Claire Xie, the barebow women’s champion this weekend made an incredible national stage debut at her first target nationals, winning both the qualification round and U.S. Open. Shaking with shock that she had smoked a 6-0 gold victory, Xie commented: “It’s amazing, I don’t know what I was thinking, I just focused on my shooting. I don’t have that much experience in the wind, so I just tried my best.” Barebow icon John Demmer III got redemption for his 2018 U.S. Open silver finish, reclaiming the title in a windy shoot off against John Dillinger. This is the second year in a row the barebow men’s final has come down to one arrow and “It’s quite a common occurrence that we go head to head,” shared Demmer; “it just feels right, it’s a good match,
always a good match, we usual ly shoot pretty well, so that part is fun.” Marcus Cooley and Antonella Bath were barebow bronze medalists after strong performanc es this weekend. World Champion Ben Thompson and Paralympic Cham pion Andre Shelby went back and forth all weekend, each taking the lead in the compound open men’s qualification after one day, but it was Thompson that claimed gold in both the National Target Cham pionships and the U.S. Open with a 141-137 final over Shelby. Andrew Pike won bronze over Lance Thornton. The masters divisions also had spectacular showings, with many national records in qualifi cation and great growth in partici pation. National Champions Scott Kissinger and Tatyana Muntyan also took recurve gold at the U.S. Open, as did Greg White and Linda Klosterman in the compound mas ters divisions. Richard Stonebraker and Kim Hartman claimed the bare bow masters U.S. Open titles.

The finest archers among countries participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program were invited to compete at the 2019 National Archery in the School’s Program All-Star Championship at Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The AllStar event was one of six events that took place July 26th-27 at the NASP® Open Championship. All eleven countries that participate in NASP@ to include: USA,
United Kingdom, Canada, British Virgin Isles, Australia, New Zealand, Mongolia, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe were invited to the All Stareventon July 26th. Canada and the USA were present in Nashville and shot both Bullseye and 3D formats. Namibia, while still in Africa, competed ,and submitted their results electronically. The All-Star event was at full spectator capacity as the best shooters from these countries “gathered” to showcase their archery talents. Just like at the National Tournament that advanced them to this championship, each archer used Genesis Bows and Easton
Aluminum Arrows, designed specifically for NASP® to compete. Bows are free from sights, stabilizers, and other aides to keep the playing field identical and affordable to every archer, just like the NASP® archery class they take at school. Archers shot the same format they shoot at every NASP® tournament, with five practice arrows at both ten and fifteen-meter shooting lines, followed by fifteen scored arrows at those distances. Archers have two minutes to shoot their “end” of five arrows and the highest possible score for an archer is 300, both for Bulls-eye and the NASP®/IBO 3D Challenge. Nashville, Tennessee, known for its country music and barbecue, opened its doors to the 2019 National Archery in the School’s Program Open & Championship, July 25th-27th. This isn't the first time Nashville has welcomed NASP®, and this year Music City Center was on fire with archery enthusiasts, spectators, and competitors for this 3-day venue that held six different events including the NASP® Bulls-eye Open, NASP® All-Star Championship, NASP® Bulls-eye Championship, NASP® IBO/3D Challenge Open, NASP® 1BO/3D Challenge Championship, and finally the NASP® Scholarship Shoot-Off. Once known as the NASP® World Tournament, the new Open Championship allowed students who had never been invited to a world tournament or who had never participated in any NASP® tournament, to attend and compete on the first day of the tournament, the “Open” on July 25th. Those who shot well in the “Open”, advanced to the Championship portion of the tournament on the 26th & 27th. The competitive format was identical to ail NASP® where tournaments students release five practice arrows followed by fifteen scored arrows at each of the ten and fifteen-meter distant shooting lines. Archers shoot bare-bow style without the help of sights or release aids. The highest score possible is a 300 with 30 tens. 28
789 student archers shot in the bullseye “Open” on day 1, with 113 qualifying to advance to the championship, 106 did so. As spectators waited with anticipation, archers stoodby for the first two whistle blows signifying to “Get Bow”. Once the single whistle blast sounded to “Shoot”, 200 arrows arced towards the bulls-eye. At the conclusion of each 75-minute flight, bubbled score cards were collected by range officials and electronically scanned for internet posting. Top individual and team results are posted below. What makes this year’s championship a little more unique is that, archers who had either not advanced from a national tournament or who had never participated in a NASP® tournament, got to shoot for spot in the Championship during the “Open”, first day. Tommy Floyd, Vice President of NASP® says, "NASP® is thrilled to have offered our first ever “Open” Tournament. Th is tournament did not require any prior participation or qualification from a separate NASP® event. We want to establish an opportunity for any NASP® student that has participated in NASP® at their school to experience the atmosphere of one of our large tournament events. With 789 students participating in the 2019 Open, we are thrilled...but we know that there are so many others out there that could benefit from this wonderful experience. We are asking anyone who knows of a NASP® archer near them to make sure they know about the Open!” The overall male shooter from the Open went to Mason Kamlitz, a 1 Oth grader from Oakes High School in North Dakota. He shot a 294. The overall female went to Savannah Sadler, an 11th grader from Norwood R-1 School

Not just a fun fact, but another amazing outcome to this year’s tournament was a shooter who won overall female in the 3D Open, also advanced to the championship and won overall female in the elementary division there as well. Archers tied in other categories were presented duplicate awards. Following the tie-breakers the very popular and intense “NASP® Scholarship Shoot-Off’ took place. President of NASP®, Roy Grimes, shed some light on the history of NASP® scholarships. “Early in NASP®’s 18 years of existence, scholarships were established both nationally and in states and provinces to recognize noteworthy achievement. Top team scholarships were rewarded
for performance at the Nationals in Salt Lake City, UT and Louisville, KY this past April and May. However, individual scholarship levels were determined at this Open Championship in Nashville via a shoot-off. Archers Quest is a standard achievement ranking system for advancement in Archery! Archery is the practice or skill of using a bow to propel ar rows. The word comes from the Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modem times, it is mainly a competitive sport and a recreational activity. A person who participates in archery is typically called an archer or a bowman— and a person who is fond of or an expert at archery is sometimes called a Toxophilite. Archery for many beginners can be a bit overwhelming because there is a lot of information in ar chery, many different techniques, and many different styles of ar chery equipment associated with the sport of archery. The purpose of this program is to give a begin ning archer a basic understanding of what archery is and how to get started in the sport of archery, and to help you become a Toxophilite. PARTICIPATION Individuals need not join anything (no membership fees), just START! When you complete online e-learning curriculum, QUEST adventures, and shooting challenges.. .you submit the quali fying results for rank achievement recognition in order of progres sion: Jr. Yeoman; Yeoman; Bow man; Archer; Master; and Toxo philite! Initial award levels may 32
be earned while participating in common recreation programs like summer camp, park classes, NASP, youth programs, where ba sic equipment is normally provid ed. You will acquire knowledge and resources in a logical progres sion to develop your ability and equipment decisions. PROGRAM One of the unique things about this program for the indi vidual is that it anticipates your evolution in skill and equipment.
Right now, you may be borrowing a simple barebow from an archery program, say summer camp. You will be shooting outdoors most ly, but later you may you maybe shooting in a NASP program in doors at a local school gym with a standard Genesis bow. No prob lem. As you move through each venue and equipment change, we have a plan. The target size stays the same depending on equipment used (barebow uses the largest tar get, recurve-sights on a smaller target, and compound-sights gets handi-capped with a tiny target)... but everyone will shoot from the same distance indoors or outdoors. Distances get longer and harder as the program continues!
YOUTH PROGRAM AWARDS Recreational programs like Summer camps, NASP, Scouts, 4H, etc. may want to use the first three Archers Quest rank awards to challenge and recognize par ticipation and achievements in ar chery. The shooting requirements are done onsite at your location. The e-learning curriculum, as signments and testing are avail able online to be download by each archer. SHOOTING IN THE WIND OR THE WIND IS YOUR FRIEND! by Rick McKinney
ny Rick McKinney, President of Carbon Tech Arrows and U.S. Representative for Win & Win Archery Windy days are normal when shooting an outdoor tour nament. Unfortunately, wind is hardly ever constant. There can be gusts. There can be soft breez es and strong breezes. There can be tail winds, head winds, easter ly winds and westerly winds or a combination of all four! So it is important to train in the winds with the main focus of learning of what happens to your arrow in the wind. First of all, it is important to tune your bow so that the arrow drift is not magnified by a poor tune. The more movement of the arrow during flight, the more drift you will probably experience. The real area of concern is the nocking point against a head wind or tail wind. Normally, you would expect a head wind to cause your arrows to hit low. However, if the nocking point is not correct, you might end up shooting high. The same as a tail wind, since it should cause the arrow to hit high, it just might hit low. The reasoning behind a head wind normally hitting low is due to resistance in flight. However, if the arrow has a wrong attack and descent angle the wind will cause the arrow to hit differently than ex pected. Thus, make sure the nock ing point is as accurate as you can get it. Also, if the arrow is weak or stiff, this will cause your arrow to drift more. Thus, it is important to make sure your tune is as good as you can get it. Once you have a fairly good tune, then you can focus on your form. The form is the biggest cause of wind drift than anything else. Ifyou shoot a strong shot, the arrow will fly on a straighter path and have less drift. If the archer collapses on the shot or shoots a 34
poor shot, the wind will cause the arrow to drift severely. Thus, it is important to execute a good strong shot. It is interesting to watch an archer who shoots in the wind and says that when they aim on the target, the arrow drifts badly and yet, when they aim off, the arrow goes right where they are aiming it. This is mainly due to shot exe cution. Normally, when the wind is blowing, the archer will shoot timidly (insecure of where the ar row is going to go). For example, The biggest challenge is to be able to determine which flag gives you the best indicator of what the arrow will do during flight.
if the arrow drifts in the blue ring (or whichever ring you chose to translate to), the easiest is to aim off in the opposing side (blue ring for this example). They will still be timid, so they shoot the arrow and it drifts into the gold! They relax and feel more confident, so the next shot is performed with less trepidation. Since they aimed the sight in the blue ring and since they had a better shot execution, the arrow drifted less than before, and now the arrow hits either in the blue ring or possibly in the red on the side they were aiming. Ini tially, this causes confusion. They aim the next shot closer to the center but shoot with less confi dence, thus causing the form to be timid and the arrow drifts further from the center. This causes a lot of confusion and frustration from the archer. This is the reason for focusing on form and shot execu tion. The smoother the shot, the less drift they will experience.
Rick What do you do when the winds are inconsistent? This is where it is important to study the trees, flags or anything else to indi cate what the wind is doing. This is at least a 500-year-old problem. Roger Ascham, who wrote and presented the book “Toxophilus; The School of Shooting” in 1545 to King Henry the VIII, talked about how the winds were incon sistent and the archer needed to study the winds in order to know where to aim. He recommend ed the archer go outside during a clear wintry day with snow on the ground and watch how the swirl ing winds affect different parts of the snow on the ground. Today, we have flags every where to observe what direction the winds are coming from. The biggest challenge is to be able to determine which flag gives you the best indicator of what the ar row will do during flight. This takes several shots and then it is not always a guarantee that the ar row will cooperate! I watched one of the expert archers, at my first international archery tournament practice the day before the com petition began at the competition field and I felt very confident that he was going to shoot poorly be cause his arrow impacts were all over the target. He was looking around (out of embarrassment?). I “assumed” that he was not having a good day. The following day and the first day of the competi tion he was pounding gold after gold during the first scoring dis tance (90 meters). I was struck by his accuracy and his form looked no different than the day before. U.S. Archer Inc. 36th Anniversary
That was when it occurred to me that yesterday he was aiming right on the center of the target and was observing the field flags to see which ones were similar to his ar row impacts. A great learning ex perience for me! I took a long break years ago after I retired from elite com petition. When 1 came back about 10 years later, I was appalled at the lack of knowledge and under standing most archers had with the wind. Most commented that since they were shooting xlO’s they did not have to aim off! I watched their arrow flight as the drift was still there but they were told by marketing gurus that the arrow was designed not to drift! Simple physics discredits this ridiculous statement. I talked with Frank Pearson some time ago about the wind and he has performed more tests in windy conditions than most. Tuc son, where he lives, is very windy and gusty. Normally, he can shoot early in the morning and the weather is fairly calm, but when it hits near 10 AM, the winds pick up and it is very difficult to shoot in. He set up a target where he could shoot out of his garage out of the wind while the target and most of the distance was outside in the wind. He was amazed at how little drift he had. This is consis tent with my observations over the years. The wind affects you more than anything else. Thus, you need to learn how to execute good shots under windy conditions. 1 know this is easier said than done, however, it has been proven that champions have learned to do this. And the one important thing to re member is that everyone has to deal with the wind. There has been talk about point weight and how it helps to have a heavy point weight or what the latest craze is called heavy front of center. That is fine, if you can tune the arrow properly with a heavy point. If it weakens the arrow, then you will suffer more due to the weakness of the arrow than the gain of having a heavier
point to fight the wind. My first world championship title was won in Australia. The winds were a bit fierce and my bow setup was the slowest on the men’s line. This was proven when everyone shot through the chronograph to re ceive “Fred Bear’s Field Notes” book. I had a very high brace height in order to get the arrows to tune. This weakened the arrow, but slowed the bow down con siderably. Since there was no ar row at the time to fit me properly I had to either drop down a lot in poundage (not viable due to shoot ing 90 meters) or go to a stiffer arrow. Several archers, coaches and even manufacturers before the tournament ridiculed me due to my slow bow. Fortunately I did not pay attention to their snarky comments. I won that event even though I had to aim off the target at times, I was still able to judge the wind correctly and focus on my form. Years later, a large com pany said it was important to have a very heavy front of center or a very heavy point in order to shoot good groups in the wind. I was so excited about this new concept and wanted to see what I used at the World Championships in Aus tralia, thinking that maybe that was why I shot so well! What a surprise when I found my arrow and checked it. The recommend ed front of center (FOC) was 1215%. Anything less and you will struggle grouping in the wind. Mine measured out at 5.6%! I laughed and decided “proof was in the pudding!” My other two world titles, I used a 10% and a 15%. There was no continuity to FOC. However, there was conti nuity of a good tune!
So, remember, that tun ing your bow the best you can is very important. Then make sure you shoot good shots in the wind and learn about the field of play flags so that you can shoot as good as you do without the wind! Good shooting!

Picture yourself in a tournament setting with one target remaining in the competition. You and another person in your shooting group are tied for first. Your opponent steps up and scores an 8 on a shot at a long, difficult turkey target. Now it is your turn. What is going through your mind? Are you thinking that you need to capture a 10 to win? Are you thinking that you have to at least score an 8? Are you concluding that you cannot hit a 5 or you will lose? Entertaining any of these thoughts can be detrimental to your game. Instead, you need to be focused on shooting the best form that you are capable of producing. Mentally block out anything that interferes with the task facing you, which is perfect shot execution. Many things can interrupt an archer’s concentration; and once this happens, the performance will suffer. Ways to combat the distractions and help you remain
focused include the following: 1. Use pre-toumament prepara tion: Do not think of the up coming tournament in terms of winning or having a fabu lous score. Instead, keep your focus on making every shot with the best form that you can produce. As you replicate your shot again and again, mentally “see” yourself using this form in the tournament setting. 2. Relax: The whole key to being able to execute good form is staying relaxed. Regulate your breathing by taking deep, slow breaths. Constantly remind yourself to drop your shoul ders and relax your muscles. 3. Think performance: You know you can shoot great form be cause you do it constantly in practice. All you need to do is execute the same shot that you have been practicing. 4. Do not be concerned with re sults: Do not put any empha sis on your score or the score of others. You can think about that after the tournament is over. Dwelling on points while competing will distract you from a top performance. 5. Be totally involved in the mo ment: Forget the shots that you have already taken and the ones that you are going to

face. Only be concerned with the shot that is in front of you. 6. Do not give shots a more sig nificant value: In the scenario at the beginning of this topic, most of you probably looked at the shot as a win or lose sit uation. With this attitude you placed a higher value on the arrow. Too often you will try to fine-tune your sight (over aim) and then make a poor shot execution. This is just another arrow, so allow your self to shoot the way you have practiced for months. 7. Use Mental Imagery: Before releasing the arrow, look at the target and visualize going through the motions of using perfect form. Let your body and mind feel the shot and then execute that same shot. Distractions can easily in terfere with your archery perfor mance, so stay in the moment and concentrate on making each shot. If your mind wanders or detrimen tal thoughts creep in, stop what you are doing and refocus on exe cuting your best form. Successful archers strive to develop self-dis cipline and a strong mental game. usually write something about bow hunting deer in western Kentucky. Most likely my thoughts turn to deer hunting because the season begins so early here. Our region of the state is slated to begin on September 7 this year. Some feel that it is cruel to hunt while others think about the scripture above. I simply think about how good the meat tastes after I smoke it until it is done. I like to hunt, but I hunt for meat. To me smaller is better. Although I would take a trophy buck if one presented itself. 1 saw three 150 plus class deer together the other evening. Usually, my trophy is a small doe for the table not to hang on a wall. The title might indicate you can hunt wherever you choose. That is not what I mean. Always have permission to hunt the land. My reason for the title refers to where I hunt. 1 hunt a 200 acre bottom that this year is filled with corn. The field lies almost east and west. Since out prevalent winds are westerly, I hunt from the eastern end primarily. Most evenings my wife and I ride by the field. Nearly always we see deer crossing from the com to the woods on the north. So when our fall season begins, I’m going to hunt the com. If you have never hunted standing com before, you’re in for a treat. Especially if there’s a bit of wind. I start on the end that the wind blowing from the other end—in my case I begin on the east end because the wind blows from the west. I ease my head between the first row and look
towards the west to see if there are deer. Seeing none, I step into the next row and repeat the process. I continue this process until 1 cross the field. At that point, I walk towards the west the distance I have been able to see down the rows, and begin my trek across the field in the other direction. This way you can hunt the whole field by keeping the wind blowing from the deer to you. I've found deer bedded down not five yards from me. One of the major drawbacks to this way of hunting is the bucks usually bed down further to the west of the doe. Unless you find a buck bedded by himself, your chances of shooting a buck is less hunting this way. You will spook him if you shoot or disturb the doe. Yes, you will make some noise; however, if the wind is blowing, there’s going to be rustling of the com leaves anyway. The only thing you have to worry about is if the wind changes or a deer slips into the field east of you after you have covered that area. This deer is downwind and you’re busted. If you get a chance this deer season, try this method of bow hunting. I know you will find it exciting. Most likely and because of my age, I’ll probably revert to sitting above the trail that leads from the east end of the corn field through a small patch of woods. Sitting can be better than walking. Scholastic 3-D Archery Names Dirk Dieterich as S3DA President

Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Dirk Dieterich of Colorado Springs, CO as the President of the S3DA Board of Directors. Dirk comes to the presidential position with extensive leadership experience, demonstrated success as a committee board member and a history of building capacity in the nonprofit sector. Dirk has either started or purchased 25 companies in oil & gas exploration, natural gas services, automobile refinance, low income housing, environmental consulting, hunting products, and ranching. He currently owns four businesses. From approximately, 2005-2015 Dirk served on the Board of the Pope & Young Club as Treasurer and then Director. Dirk currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech. Dirk’s areas of focus include strategy, finance, board management, and program delivery. Dirk’s goal is to utilize his business experience to help grow the organization in an organized and structured environment. Dirk was bom and raised in Richardson, Texas,

where he resided until he went off to college. Dirk enrolled at Texas Tech University and graduated in 1978 with a degree in Finance. After graduating from Texas Tech, Dirk was hired by Hunt Energy Corporation in Bismarck, North Dakota. Dirk started his career there as a Petroleum Landman and worked there for a couple of years before he was transferred to Midland, Texas to serve as a District Manager. Dirk lived in Midland for 27 years before moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he currently resides with his wife, Didi. They have been married for 35 years and have a son in Austin. TX and a daughter in San Francisco, CA. Dirk became interested in archery in college and bought a compound bow back in the late 1970’s. He hunted with it for 2 seasons and then switched to a recurve. He has hunted with recurves and longbows ever since. Dirk stated, “It is fair to say that I am a traditional bow addict. I cannot imagine shooting anything else. I have harvested whitetail deer, mule deer, black tail deer, elk, moose, black bear, turkeys, hogs, javelinas and probably a few more species. I have actively shot in 3-D shoots for the past 30 years or so.” In 2015, in Phoenix, AZ, Dr. Jack Frost, who was also on the Pope & Young Board, encouraged Dirk Dieterich to spend some time with Jennie Richardson, who had recently started a new organization called Scholastic 3-D Archery and had a booth at the convention. Jack had been out to visit with Jennie and was very interested in how she was introducing young folks to archery. At the time, Pope and Young was searching for a signature conservation initiative to partner with. Dirk spent a couple of hours talking to Jennie and was blown away by her compassion and background in the industry. Dirk stated that it was easy to see that S3DA was the future of archery and bowhunting. Following the call, Dirk and Jennie worked out a plan to connect the Pope & Young Club and S3DA to service S3DA’s immediate need for funding. Pope & Young made a financial commitment to S3DA and S3DA agreed to include bowhunting in their curriculum. The relationship between the U,S. Archer Inc. 36th Anniversary
two has been wonderful and both organizations have benefitted greatly from the partnership. Dirk states, “I believe that one of, if not the most important, role we have as adults is to help young people reach their potential and make the best decisions they possibly can growing up. I have a unique opportunity to do this both as a member of the S3 DA board, as well as the Rawls College of Business Board. The most gratifying time 1 get each year, is the time I get to spend interacting with these incredible young folks. Kids love archery and there is no better organization out there to introduce them to this wonderful sport. There are other admirable youth organizations out there in the archery industry, but I believe that S3 DA is positioned well and destined to be the leader going forward. Jennie, her amazing staff and the board, have done an incredible job of getting this organization to this point in its evolution. With several thousand kids as members, the industry support we currently have and the growth we are experiencing, the most important thing we can do is apply sound business practices to the organization and manage the growth carefully. With all of that said, we should support each other, act as a team and not as competitors and do what is best for the kids. After all, it is all about the kids and building our future leaders.” Dirk wants S3DA to have a presence in every state and county in the United States. Accomplishing this goal will take quality management and considerable funding. S3DA will continue to find the best people available in geographic locations and encourage participation in the organization. Dirk stated that S3DA would have to be able to generate the necessary operating funds from events to reach a point of financial sustainability. S3DA will continue to seek both industry and non-industry funding.
Scholastic 3-D Archery Names Jack Fares as S3DA Vice President Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Jack Fares of Grand Rivers, KY as the Vice President of the S3DA Board of Directors. Jack will work with the Board of Directors and other S3 DA Administrators to plan, develop and enforce S3 DA policies and objectives for the S3DA organization to maintain values and meet established goals. Fares has extensive business experience having bought a Harley-Davidson dealership in 2005 as well as building a new 55,000 square feet dealership, which became one of the top twenty-five Harley-Davidson dealerships in the country. In 2017, Jack decided to follow other interests and sold all his businesses. With Jack’s experience in the business industry, he will contribute to S3DA in a variety of ways including sales, profitability requirements, strategic planning, evaluation, customer base and markets. Jack attended Evansville College. Upon graduation, he spent the next six years in the United States Air Force. During the next thirty years he flew for Northwest Airlines as a Pilot. In 2015, Jack built a state-of-theart indoor gun range next to the dealership where he met Archery Coach Tom Patterson, who told him about the NASP program. After that meeting, Jack started working on getting the program into his granddaughter’s school. It took two years, but with the help of Tom, they were successful. In 2016, Jack’s granddaughter was introduced to S3DA and shot her first tournament. Jack stated, “From that time forward, I have been very impressed with not only the organization but with the people involved with S3DA. It seems like the more I found out about the program, the more 1 wanted
Jack Fares to be a part of the organization.” Jack became an S3DA Coach and helped during both the Kentucky State and National S3DA Tournament events. When S3DA Executive Director, Jennie Richardson asked Jack if he would like to be a representative on the S3 DA Board of Directors, Jack did not even contemplate the decision. Jack stated, “I knew if I could help one more child be introduced to archery it would be worth it.” Jack Fares, S3 DA Vice President stated, “I believe over the next 5 to 10 years, S3 DA can become one of the largest archery organizations in the country. I want to thank all the great sponsors, staff, National, State and Regional Coordinator’s, coaches, parents and of course the archers for their support and dedication to this program. We would not be where we are today without everyone’s contributions. My goal is to see S3 DA grow at a pace from which we can continue to give a first-class experience to all our archers. Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery has named David Kirkwood of Sparks, Nevada as the new Nevada State Coordinator. David will oversee all aspects of the S3 DA program in Nevada including tournaments, trainings and the division of the state into regions. David will be the very first State Coordi nator in Nevada and his plan is to divide the state into 4 regions: East, West, Central and South. David will recruit Regional Coordinators through contacts at his archery range, as well as through national conserva tion groups. Kirkwood was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the age of eight, he moved from Las Vegas to Arizona and started hunting and harvesting deer, elk, javelina and several small game species with a bow. David said that he enjoyed the challenge of harvesting an animal with a bow versus a rifle. Later, he would spend sev eral hours per day at his friend’s archery shop while in high school and that fueled his desire to open his own archery shop. In 1996, David moved to Reno, Nevada and married his beautiful wife and hunting partner and became a Construction Contractor. He continued to shoot archery tournaments and hunt every chance he got. Over the years he has pursued his passion for archery and bowhunting in Nevada by harvesting a Pope and Young quality Antelope and several Mule Deer. In 2001, David and his wife welcomed their first child. David said they knew the name was going to be “Hunter” whether they had a boy or girl, because that was their passion. In 2004, David and his wife welcomed a second child. David Kirkwood states, “As soon as my chil dren were old enough to start shooting archery, we were shooting in the back yard and local tournaments as a family. My son’s growing love for archery had me coaching and in 2015 opening an archery shop and range, where, with a USA Archery Level 3 Certifica tion as well as being a Certified Judge, 1 coach JOAD, NASP, Adaptive Archery and now S3DA. My passion is sharing my love for archery with everyone.”

David learned about S3DA during the S3DA Vegas National Championship at the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Vegas Shoot. He said when he stopped by the S3DA booth, he remembered thinking that S3DA was right up his alley because it combined target archery, 3-D and hunting. David plans on growing S3DA in Nevada to become a large youth program involving as many kids as possible and opening the doors for youth that would never otherwise get to experience archery or hunting. David plans to implement several tournaments in different regions of Nevada to give the Nevada youth archers more opportunities to compete as well. The goal is to recruit kids through flyers distributed throughout the school districts and several outdoor shows such as the Wild Sheep Foundation, Mule Deer Foundation and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Archery in Schools Program. S3 DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) Names Bob Gattorna as Northeastern National Outreach Coordinator
Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Bob Gattorna of Connecticut as the S3 DA Northeastern National Outreach Coordinator which will significantly increase participation within the program in the Northeastern states by emphasizing communication from the national to local level, as well as ensuring that there is consistency in following the rules, mission and ethical stance of the S3DA program. Bob will work directly with State Coordinators in the Northeast region to educate them on how to be effective leaders and promoters of S3 DA
in their respective states. Gattorna was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin and raised in Enfield, Connecticut from the age of 5. He became interested in archery at the age of nine when he was given a fiberglass recurve as a birthday gift and the interest blossomed from there. In high school, Bob took his hunter education class and started out small game hunting. He enjoyed it so much that he began deer hunting with a shotgun, eventually buying his first compound bow, which provided him the opportunity to be in the woods even more. Bob said, “I got my dad started with bowhunting in his sixties. I go deer hunting every year with my dad, who is currently a young 81-year-old. We do black powder, rifle and bowhunting together.” Bob Gattorna is a Certified Archery Technician (helping at shops and shows) and current Pro Staff for PSE Archery and Mossy Oak. He is the Vice President of the Northeast Championship Series (NECS) which was organized in 2013 by a group of archers throughout the Northeast to promote archery and specifically competitive 3-D archery. Working with a national 3-D organization, NECS tripled archer participation and created two tournament series within the Northeast. Bob enjoys working with youth, introducing them to the sport of archery and hunting. Some of his accomplishments include:
oversaw New England and New York State Reps in selecting clubs, running shoots and raising awareness of the IBO in the area. Oversaw the New England Championship Series, New York State Championship Series and New England Traditional Rendezvous from 2014-2018.

His passion is to grow archery, so future generations will continue what their forefathers left them. he held positions in the finance, banking and private business sectors. Quentin has held a CPA license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky since 2014. The National Archery in the Schools program first piqued Quentin’s interest into the archery world. Quentin stated that Jennie Richardson (S3 DA Executive Director) was a major contributor to his archery involvement and success. Quentin said that after competing in his first NASP tournament, he was hooked from there on. He began competing in national tournaments with his own compound set-up. His involvement with competitive archery easily transitioned to a love for bowhunting. Young stated, “There is just something special about adoring God’s creation in a tree stand during the fall of the year as the leaves begin to change colors.” Quentin learned about S3DA through Richardson. Since learning about the program, Quentin has continued to notice the organization’s activity and growth across the country. Quentin was very excited when he received the invitation to be a member on the S3DA Board of Directors. Quentin states, “I wanted to serve and give back to an industry that truly made a difference in my life. I would not be where 1 am today without the life lessons learned through archery. I believe in the work and opportunities that S3 DA is creating for the youth of today. I believe we will continue to see phenomenal growth over the next few years. With hard work and vision of its leadership team, continued great success is certainly on the horizon.”

Williamsburg, KY - South Carolina S3DA hosted the 1sl 3-D Regional Tournament of the 2019 season at the Midlands Archery Center in Hopkins, South Carolina. This was the very first S3 DA 3-D Tournament for new clubs Point-On Archery from Catawba, SC and Midlands Archery Club. Emmanuel Baptist College in Georgia awarded $10,000 in college scholarships while Union College in Kentucky awarded $17,000 in college scholarships. Alexander Hemmila (high school traditional) and Malachi Sewell (high school fixed pins) are homeschooled archers that received scholarships. Nine-year-old Bayleigh Johnson, current member of Point-On Archery said, “1 like S3DA because it is a stress reliever. In our group, we had several kids who were shooting 3-D for their very first time. I have been shooting archery in ASA with my family for 3 years and I am the 2018 ASA SC Junior Eagle Champion. Archery is a good sport for kids of all ages and we just like having fun and meeting new people.” “I love S3DA. It is a good way to have fun. It is fun to beat your personal best, but it is also

Williamsburg, KY - May 4,h, 2019 - Team On-Point S3DA hosted the Is1 annual Georgia S3 DA Outdoor Target State Championship in Social Circle, Georgia. Jake Martin, GA State Coordinator, said he had planned for 60 archers to participate but three weeks before the event it appeared they could have up to 150 kids to register. Jake was able to reach out to another S3 DA club and secure a new larger venue. The city and school of Social Circle, GA was gracious enough to lend the use of their old High School football field. There were two lines of competition with elimination rounds to immediately follow. Everyone was advised to bring rain gear and tents; which turned out to be a pretty good decision as there was delays in the competition throughout the day. It was a long day due to the weather, but a first-time experience for many parents and kids who have never been to or competed in an S3DA event. With some torrential downpours, the B.A.M.M. Archery club’s tent suffered a huge blow. B.A.M.M. Archery Head Coach, Leonard Hardy stated, “The morning line was perfect, but the evening line was where all the rain came in. My tent did suffer a little, but hopefully that will open the door for my wife to let me buy a new one. The event ran smooth and everything was great. Everybody had a great time and if it was left up to these kids, they would participate every weekend.” S3DA parent Sarah Bates stated, “My son, Justin, has never shot 50 meters in competition. There was a lot of preparation and many hours put in. As a parent and volunteer, I always learn something new about archery and I am continually impressed with the dedicated coaches who work so hard at growing this sport and S3DA’s organization. However, 1 am particularly proud of my son for his performance in High School Fixed Pins and that he volunteered on his own to help with concessions. I believe what any
sport’s main goal should be about seeing positive change, not only in an individual, but also in growing community spirit. I am very happy that my family is a part of S3 DA and Team On-Point.” The tournament was a huge success and a new venue was definitely needed. Georgia S3DA had 118 students from 12 different clubs from all over the state to compete. Jake Martin, GA S3DA State Coordinator, said “The Social Circle venue was perfect, centrally located in the state, had indoor restrooms and a functioning concession stand. Everything you need.”

S3DA North Carolina holds 4th 3-D State Championship

Williamsburg, KY -June 9,h, 2019 - North Carolina S3 DA held their fourth 3-D State Championship in Sage Creek, North Carolina. Sage Creek is a beautiful course with three ranges. There were 117 competitors and 300 spectators on-site, making this the largest NC S3DA event to date. Over $5 million dollars in college scholarships were available at the conclusion of the shoot. The competition was tight with 9 different divisions being decided in a shoot-down. In addition to awarding scholarships, S3DA teams and clubs competed for top honors and “Shooter of the Year” belt buckles. Walk-On Archery club S3 DA archer Cooper Franklin won the shoot-off for the Male High School Open division and his father Chad was ecstatic. Chad said, “I almost killed him. He was 8 up and in 2nd place going into the shoot-down and he decided he would shoot at a 14 on the second target! Luckily, he hung an 8 and I managed to not pass out.” During this very intense shoot-down in the male high school open division, S3DA coach Matthew Shumate from Cornerstone Christian Academy stated, “Holding it together during those shoot-downs was almost impossible. I have never been prouder to be a part of such a fine group of people in my life. These young men and women are truly some of the finest,

Scholastic 3-D Archery 225 North 3rd Street Williamsburg, KY 40769 Williamsburg, KY-Buffalo Ridge Wildlife Refuge and officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency hosted TN S3DA at their facility on the Buffalo River in West Tennessee for the 2019 3-D State Championship. The beautiful rolling ridges and riverbanks were filled with colorful jerseys and the sounds of foam being struck by hundreds of arrows. Approximately, 700 spectators and participants were on hand. Archers competed for the state title in their respective categories and age groups, while also competing for “Shooter of the Year” honors to receive a NEW belt buckle. To be eligible for “Shooter of the

Year,” participants had to compete in at least three regionals and the state championship. In addition to the participants, parents and volunteers, TWRA Agency representatives Lance Rider, Freddy Couch, James Askins, Melissa Raulerson, Don Hosse and other TWRA volunteers Tim and Wanda Anderson and Sabrina Buchanan helped to ensure the events success. “Through amazing partnerships with our Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Tennessee State Parks, we are able to offer new venues such as these which welcome our archers and programs. We
only see the potential of these connections growing in order to provide more opportunities for our youth. Tennessee’s archers were able to enjoy a beautiful new venue, second to none. Thanks to TWRA, our state tournament was an amazing event to finish off a fantastic 3-D season,” stated Tennessee S3 DA State Coordinator, Matt Adams. Covenant Ranch Youth Archery Club won 1st place in the elementary and middle school division, followed by Tuckasee Archery and Muddy Bayou. for Tennessee S3DA. They began their Indoor season in December and finished in February with a huge event at the NWTF Convention Center in Nashville,
TN, where thousands of visitors could see the program. Around that same time, TN S3 DA received notification of a full partnership with TWRA, to include funding
for new and existing clubs, coach certifications and to support the infrastructure of the organization. The 3-D season began in April and finished with two amazing state tournaments that allowed archers to be showcased across the state. Over S440,000 in college scholarships were presented to TN S3 DA students at each state tournament with only nine seniors graduating from the program statewide. The future of TN S3 DA is bright and the talent and skill of these competitors will be showcased even further at the national level on July 9th-13lh in Metropolis, IL. More information on Kinetic Kids San Antonio Xtreme Para Archery S3DA Team When the US Archer magazine received information about what Texas S3DA was doing in 3D and Outdoor Target, I (as the editor) wanted to know more about their program. Little did I know that I would meet another person by the name of Roger Koss who cared as much as I do about the kids and what we can do to help them develope their character through Archery into adulthood. I asked S3DA’s media director, Kayla Bolton, if we could use the photo, to the left, for our July/August cover. She contacted Roger and he called me to confirm

He had this to say, “Dennis “Trey” Lively is one of the many members of a terrific organization Kinetic Kids based in San Antonio, TX. His venture into archery' started while I was a graduate student at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio (UIW). I was introduced to the organization by Scott Leblanc who is the Director of Sports and Wellness at UIW. Scott is a certified Recreational Therapist and coaches with Kinetic Kids in many sports.

Congratulations Wes Hodges, Deric Forrestier, Wilson Brown, Jonathon Davis, J.D. Mars, Joel Dewey, and John Pipes on your June Training. My business partner Barry Watson owns Alamo Area Archery. Our goal is to bring the joy of archery to families in the San Antonio area. We are both USAA Level 3 Coaches and follow the National Training System Method of archery. We acknowledge that all youth need the opportunity to have fun and allow for a flexibility as each student finds their comfort zone. With Scott’s help we organized a youth para archery clinic at UIW. Initially we had 5 kids attending. Then we held two more clinics... each clinic growing in size. The growing interest in youth para archery, gained the attention of the Kenitic Kids leadership enough to allow us to form a team. This is how the San Antonio Xtreme S3 DA Archery team was founded. To add to the excitement, the organization was given a sizable grant from the Hartford Foundation and Disabled Sports USA, to assist many of the sports Kinetic Kids supports. We were included in the allocation of support. With the help of Leading Edge Archery owners, Scott Hamlin and Cody Wells, we were able acquire the perfect mix of recurve and compound bows with the supporting equipment to outfit 19 complete archery equipment kits.

Wisconsin S3DA 3-D & Target Regionals Williamsburg, KY-Wisconsin S3DA hosted a 3-D and Outdoor
Target Regional at Outagamie County Conservation Club in Hortonville, WI. Blazin Arrows Inc., and the conservation club worked together to host 56 S3DA archers on a very challenging course for the 3-D event, while 32 archers stayed for the afternoon field target competition. With over 200 spectators on hand, families from all over the state traveled to this event. 9 Wl S3DA clubs sent participants to both the 3-D and field target competitions. “It is hard to believe there is that many kids here and they are so quiet,” said one parent. While the parents may have thought that kids were quiet, they were full of energy. Some students said they were excited to shoot on the same course as what they would compete on for the upcoming state event, because it gave them a little familiarity with the range layout. Other archers were extremely nervous, because it was there first time shooting in competition. Overall, the archers said they had a blast and made friends that would last a lifetime. Andy Coon ran the registration for the event and commented, “These archers moved through the course, seeing friends they have made in what we call "The Big Wisconsin Archery Family” and they lightly conversed over one another being done with school for the year or showing each other their new shooting equipment. As they returned from the course, laughter and conversation could be heard all the way up the clubhouse, where I was located. It was like sweet music through the woods. As afternoon approached, the 3-D shoot-ofl's fired up and parents and teammates encouraged and cheered for each other as the numbers was called out by the officials. As the shootoffs ended, each archer congratulated one another. These kids have grown so much in the last 3 years as archers, competitors and friends.” “When I left my house, 1 thought what a great day to have an S3 DA shoot. As I walked around the grounds, I listened in on some conversations and got to see how excited all the kids were to shoot. The most popular conversation was all the archers

The Outdoor Group Staff Shooter Alexid Ruiz Captures the Gold at the Hyundai World Cup July 9, 2019
West Henrietta, NY - The fourth stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup concluded over the weekend in Berlin, Germany, with Elite Archery’s Alexis Ruiz tak ing gold and stealing the show for Team USA. Shooting her custom USA Victory X, Ruiz took to the field in Berlin after having medaled in the previous three World Archeiy stages. Her collective points to date had already earned her a spot in the World Cup Final in Moscow, Rus sia this September, but that didn’t stop her from putting on one of her best performances of the season to win the individual gold medal (143-141) and women’s compound team bronze medal (231-221). “I’m still very excited about how I did in Berlin; I have been on the podium at the first three World Cups but I still was chasing that gold medal,” Ruiz said. “When I made it to the gold medal match, I knew this was the one where I’m going to get the gold. I focused on every shot to make it the best that it can be. It got a little windy, but my Victory X helped me, and I finally got the gold medal. I’m still speechless about this amazing weekend.” Ranking fourth after qualifi cations at the start of the tourna ment, Ruiz earned herself a spot on the women’s compound team. The US women began team qualifica
tions in first, ultimately dropped to Turkey (227-231) in the semifinal and bested Germany in the bronze medal match (231-221). “I shouldn’t be surprised with Alexis’ success after the year she has had, but she continues to impress - Alexis works as hard as anyone in archery and it shows,” said Darrin Christenberry, Elite Archery pro staff manager. “A gold medal was just a matter of time as she continues to prove that she is a force to be reckoned with. Pope and Young Club Names M.R. James First Recipient Of The Glenn St. Charles Outstanding Member Award Chatfield, MN During the recent Pope and Young convention held in Omaha, Nebraska, M.R. James was presented with the inaugural “Glenn St. Charles Outstanding Member Award.” Since 1971, M.R. has worked tirelessly promoting the Pope and Young Club and encouraging bowhunters to get involved. M.R. has supported the Club with his time, countless donations and has worked tirelessly to educate the bowhunting public about the Club’s history and the important role the Club plays in the protection of our bowhunting heritage. As a staunch supporter of fair-chase bowhunting, M.R. has devoted his life to these efforts. This is a very prestigious award and it is fitting that M.R. is the inaugural recipient. “During our Recognition Banquet on Friday, April 12th, I gaveout our first Glenn St. Charles Outstanding Member Award,” said Kathy Strecker, Membership Chair for the Pope and Young Club. “This is a very prestigious award presented to a very deserving member; a member who has volunteered their time, and effort supporting the Pope and Young Club. Archery Hall of Fame visits ETAR Last month 1 had the opportunity to travel with my Amish friends to central Pennsylvania to one of the largest Traditional Archenevents in the country. .Along with eight Amish archen- bowman and their driver we left the little town of Spartansburg, Pennsylvania at 4:30 on a Saturday morning to be able to spend the day in Denton 11 ill State Park, the site of one spectacular archery event. Over 2,800 shooters from rhe age of 4 to 84+took on the challenge of seven different 3D courses laid our along die Kill side (I would call it a mountain) with eleva tions ranging from 1800 to 2400 feet above sea-level. What use to be a skiers winter wonderland was turned into an archers paradise.
Ourfirst stop was to see Bowhunting Legend Barry Wensel.

On its 30th anniversary over 8,000 spectators made dieir way through the venders tents and watched archers from all over the country display their skill on the ranges.
1 was honored to meet Mike Knefley (the MAN behind the event and he took the time to escort me around all rhe courses (up and down the mountain) as he gave me the first class tour. He spoke to almost everyone we passed by and once and a while would jump out and borrow some ones bow to shoot at one of die 3D targets. He and his staff did a fabulous job in setting up the courses in less that a weeks rime. Mike’s enthusiasm was contagious
and I could sec that he and his wife and family are rhe heart and sole of this major archery happening.
