"The control I feel when I'm shooting with a Longhorn is like nothing I've experienced before with any other back tension release - it helps me put the arrow right where I want it. Scott's new Longhorn release is a natural fit for me." Eric Griggs Littleton, MA Scott Pro Staff

release consistently provides a smooth, controlled, precise shot. Ergonomic grips balance and disperse pressure evenly across the fingers, while the half-moon trigger design utilizes a “precision click” system to deliver the superior control serious archers demand. To meet any shooting style and allow for optimum adaptability, each two-, three-, or four-finger model comes standard with small, medium and large thumb posts. The Longhorn is a true breakthrough in target release performance.

Chance Beaubouef user a Longhorn release to take top honors at the 2003 NFAA World Archery Festival in Las Vegas. Of the three Pro Shooters using a Longhorn at the 2002 IBO World Championships, two earned 1st place and one earned 2nd. Now that's proven performance.

Editorial Report by Arlyne Rhode

Hazel Jennings, an over 50 Year NFAA Member, left us April 13, 2003 for her final healing. We will miss her delightful smile.

This is turning out to be one of the greatest years in competitive archcry. The National Field Archcry Association (NFAA) held three events this spring climaxing with the most exciting and the highest prize payout of any 3- Star World Festival Championships.

Congratulations to the 3-Star Shoot Off Winners Winner of the new Ford Mustang - Brian Jones, KY Winner of a new ATX' - Colin Booth. LA Winner of the drawing for a new car - Doug W illiams, NY Winner of the drawing for a new ATV-William Bershinsky, WY The above winners had to compete in Las Vegas, Kansas City and Atlantic City to win these awards. See pages 178-184 for the Kansas City regular competition and pages 186-187 for the scores in the Atlantic City regular competition. The senior archers have been very busy this spring with the National Senior Games being covered in photos and report by Joe Bauemfeind on the cover and pages 174-177. We had planned to run coverage on the Arizona Cup but high quality photos were not available at press time. We will run them in next issue if they are available. March 27,2003 we lost a very special friend. Charlie Edward Langston was ambushed when he went to work Thursday morning. Although he fought back killing at least one of his attackers, he was killed by multiple gun shot wounds. Charlie’s wife Lucy has requested that we keep her and the rest of Charlie’s family in our prayers. We will miss the happy energetic modem "Paul Bunyan" of the archery world.

May God be with you in all your fun and all your work. Sincerely, Arlyne Rhode

Her love for the sport led her to earn a women’s world record for long-distance archery shooting during a competition in Barstow. California in 1952. Her son, Matthew Cavanaugh said that his mother loved the sport and she taught all her kids how to shoot. Mrs. Jennings also enjoyed sewing and gardening with her family. She married Thomas P. Jennings on September 30, 1989 in Camino, California. They moved to Columbia three years ago after living in Stover for several years. International Field Archery Association News I/'AA President Ken Rogers

As this column is going to press, the combined IFAA World Bowhunter Championship (WBHC-2003) and, the European Bowhunter Championship (EBHC-2003) arc about to get underway. These events will be held in Italy during July 2003. At this moment, over 700 archers have registered to compete in one or both tournaments. The Italians have requested an IFAA approval for their 3-D Animal target set and have been given interim approval. Pending on-site measurement by IFAA officials, the targets will be given full IFAA approval. This will provide an alternate set of targets to our nations for IFAA sanctioned events. More information on this will be sent to the IFAA Committee of national representatives later this summer. You can check the IFAA Tournament Schedule (this issue) for other upcoming IFAA tournaments. Please note: The NFAA-USA has confirmed their intentions concerning the IFAA World Field Archery Championship (WFAC-2004) to be held at Watkins Glen, New York 19-23 July, 2004. A local contact is listed in the Tournament schedule as well as an NFAA-USA Headquarters contact. Information is scanty at this time however, much local information is available on the New York Field Archery Assn. Website. This can be accessed by going through the IFAA website and accessing the NFAA-USA website. Select New York on the NFAA-USA site and follow links to Watkins Glen information. (IFAA website is: www.archcrv-ifaa.com The IFAA Field Mail Match for 2003 is currently underway. All information is available on the IFAA website. Information and assistance is also available at: admin@archerv-ifaa.com The Field

The results are in for 2002! Mail Match information/registration and rules arc printed in this issue as well. Don't forget to register for the IFAA North American Field Archery Championship (NAFAC-2003) to be held in December, 2003 at Homestead, Florida. While it is a bit early to advertise the warm weather in Florida as a reason to attend please keep in mind that it will be tempting in December. This tournament has grown during the past few years as more and more archers look forward to a Florida respite and. an excuse to shoot a Field event in December. On a personal note: when my current term as president of the International Field Archery Association is completed on December 31. 2004, I will have served 10 years in that position. This is certainly a much longer time than I envisioned when accepting the surprise nomination in 1994. I will be notifying the IFAA Committee shortly, of my intent not to stand for re election to office. It has been an absolute pleasure to represent Field Archcry at all levels and at the international level. However, what could be accomplished has been accomplished. What could not, 1 leave to a new (and younger) person. One of my goals was to improve the public knowledge of the IFAA throughout the world. I believe the IFAA is better known today than it was in 1994. That has come about in many ways, one being the IFAA website overseen by our IFAA Secretary, Loet Smit, from Africa. The addition of the IFAA World Indoor Archery Championship and, the IFAA World 3-D Championship has brought more archers to IFAA events. IFAA approved targets bear the IFAA Logo and "IFAA approved’’ which has certainly helped promote the association. These are but a few of the steps

taken over the years and. are the result of a team effort. The IFAA committee has been very good to me. They have not of course, given me a free rein but, they have listened and acted to put those things into effect which they thought might help. My times with the IFAA Committee have been a terrific learning session for me as to international diplomacy. Of course, they might all say that I (being an American) have none. I might agree - after all, we Americans are blunt, impatient and probably think that we know it all. I cannot believe how much patience 1 have acquired over these years although, I feel certain my wife Mie, would contest that. In all respects, it has been a wonderful experience. It should be noted that my friend and editor, Arlyne Rhode (U.S. and International Archer) has been a very special person and backer of the IFAA and of me. That - will wait until the end of the term. Another influence in my life of late,

has been our trips to Florida during the Winter months. The time spent each year has grown from a few weeks in the beginning to eight and a half months this year. This has culminated in our decision to re-locate there permanently. The last winter having been spent to a large extent. in adding on to our home there, we have made one last trip back to North Carolina to sell our home here. Thirty -two years of precious saved “Junk" goes out of the garage leaving me to explore empty areas not seen for a long time. Fortunately, there are many other junk collectors around and it is my pleasure to know that my junk will now be in their appreciative hands. You men out there know of what 1 speak 1 Well, enough rambling for this issue. My kind and benevolent benefactor, Arlyne, is figuratively looking over my shoulder saying - TODAY is the deadline 1 So - here it is Miss Rhode. Until next issue - Ken KRogcrs-IFAA@att.net

RELY o’* BCY Savage QC Ranger Improved For Smoother Operation The latest version of the Savage QC Ranger has fewer moving parts. Most of the changes are internal, but the result of a $30,000 investment in new tooling is operation that’s even smoother and more precise than the original model. The list of QC Ranger standard features remains impressive. This is the only range adjustable sight that you set to your bow speed. And it’s the only sight you can adjust while you keep your eyes on your quarry. That’s because you can set the yardage selector al increments of 1,5, or 10 yards. If you don’t know your bow speed, instructions with the sight show you how to determine it by shooting at two known distances. When your sight is right on, there is no need to tighten a lock down. The QC Ranger holds its position without lock downs, yet adjusts easily when you squeeze the trigger at the end of the yardage arm. The adjustment range is wide enough for any bow, no matter how big or small the sight window is. And it comes with the industry’s widest range of sighting options: fixed horizontal or vertical fiber optic & tritium fiber optic pins, four versions of a new round Solar Scope that accept our Night Hawk I pin, or pendulum swings that allow it to double as a trccsland sight. See the QC Raimer at your local archcry retailer, go on line with your computer to www.savagearchery.com, or call (318) 428-7733 to request a catalog. “Where Quality® Meets Innovation” Savage Systems, 110 North Front Street, Oak Grove, LA 71263 www.savagcarchery.com July-August 2003 - Visit our website at www.usarcher.com

More noise suppression. More accuracy. Higher scores. It's all here, in the unique DoinkerD2'." We have taken the original Doinker’’ technology - the same one that brought home countless trophies and two Olympic Gold Medals - and refined it, made it even better. The new ribs soak up additional noise and vibration; the lighter weight increases response-time and 360-degree active dampening. Perfect for today's technicallyadvanced bows. We've revamped the entire line, too. With Doinker D2" technology throughout, all-new stabilizers and new vivid colors. _

Stanislawski Archery Products Merged with Copper John Corp. Creating Win-Win for the Target Archery Industry Fairport. New York: March 17, 2003- For over the past 2 decades. Stanislawski Archery Products produced high quality products for the competitive archer. After 27 years. Mel and his wife, Marie, decided it was time to relax and began planning for their retirement. “We fell the first step in that plan was to find a partner that had the same appreciation for quality and integrity that Marie and I have" according to Mel. They found those qualities in Eric and Doug Springer of Copper John Corp, and on December 12. 2001, the two companies merged their operations. The Stanislawski product line was then moved to Copper John's manufacturing facility in Auburn, New York. This merger brought new blood to the Stanislawski name. Doug Springer. Business Manager and co-owner of Copper John, was excited about the venture and promised exiling things from Stanislawski Archery Products. "Stanislawski hasn’t come out with any new products in several years. We have introduced some exciting new products this year as well as upgraded the current product line. Mel’s handles were been around for at least four years and that’s on the old side of the life cycle on this type of product. In 2003. we introduced new, updated handles on the original Stanislawski releases. We have a great capacity for both design and manufacturing. The tenet of all our designing is to keep manufacturing in mind and keep the prices low. We take 158

advantage of everything our manufacturing technology can offer. What people will discover is that the Stanislawski name, where it once was on top and was knocked off by the competition, is the company you go to in order to find the latest and the greatest." Mel Stanislawski continues to be involved in the research and development of new products. Together he and Eric Springer, Copper John's Engineering Manager and Co-owner, brainstorm ideas and concepts. When a Stanislawski product is introduced, archers can rest assured the product works! It has been thoroughly tested and has met the high standards of the Stanislawski and Copper John names. Twenty-seven years ago, Stanislawski products took competition archery to new levels in accuracy. It’s hard to predict where these levels will wind up with the youth and enthusiasm of the Copper John Corp. Driving Stanislawski know-how and expertise. The real winner in this win-win situation is not the companies, but the target archer who can look forward to improved accuracy for say at least the next 27 years! Copper John Corp, was formed with the express intent to design and manufacture superior archery products at an affordable price. Its current brands include both the Copper John and Stanislawski lines of archery products. Copper John Corp., 173 State Street, Auburn, NY 13021

GOLDEN KEY ADDS TO ‘TRANQUILIZER ’™ STABILIZER LINE! In what has to be one of the most exciting breakthroughs in vibration, shock and noise control for the archer, GOLDEN KEY-FUTURA has unveiled two more models in its new ‘TRANQUILIZER’ Stabilizer Line. The new TRANQUILIZER™ ‘SHORTY’ & ’3D HUNTER’ - both designed with the incredible ’ LimbSaver' technology that reduces shock and vibration for greater comfort, accuracy and performance.

Robert Troncoso of Golden Key made the announcement. "By using the technology made available through working with the masters of vibration and noise reduction at Sims Vibration Labs, we were able to design a stabilizer, the •TRANQUILIZER’, that virtually leaves every other design including solid, hydraulic or material filled, behind." Troncoso continued. “The ‘TRANQUILIZER’ is so efficient that it reduces the noise of a release up to 12 dB. It reacts to vibrations of the shot about 70% faster than anything currently available and reduces vibrations up to 70%. In effect, the ‘TRANQUILIZER' outperforms all existing stabilizers for the reduction of noise and vibrations for a smoother, quieter and importantly, more accurate shot. There has never been anything to compare to this product."

The ‘TRANQUILIZER’ is balanced and lightweight, is unaffected by the weather, works on all bows for target and hunting and carries a limited lifetime warranty. It will be available in Black, Mossy Oak Breakup, Mossy Oak Forest Floor, Advantage, Advantage Timber, RealtreeX-tra.andTreBark II camouflage. Both of these new shock-reducing winners now feature threaded end caps for adding extra weight or another stabilizer. They will accept all AMO 5/16-24 threaded weights/stabilizer extensions. The ‘SHORTY’ is 5 5/8” long, weighs 3.6 oz. The ‘3D HUNTER’ is 7 5/8" long weighing 6 OZ. Introducing the Easy-Slide Extreme., Cobra Updates Its Versatile Movable Fiber Optic Pin Sight

The movable Easy-Slide Extreme from Cobra, America's til Sight Manufacturer, now includes a long (more than two feet!) ,030 fiber optic cable and a bubble level for accurate shooting and fast target acquisition in any hunting environment. Bixby, OK — Cobra has upgraded its popular, movable bow sight and the result is the Easy-Slide Extreme which offers a brighter .030 fiberoptic pin bead and a new bubble level. The effect is to make one of the world’s best micro-adjustable bowhunting sights even more adaptable under all field or shooting conditions. "Archers had so much success with our movable Easy-Shdc Sight that for 2003 we have added more than two feet of wrapped optical fiber around the scope ring and included an easy-to-read bubble level in the round, two-inch aperture,” states Cobra Vice President Russ Freeman. “The overall effect is to increase the benefits for experienced bowhunters who enjoy these movable sights. The longer fiber gathers more Hght on overcast days and in the very early and very late hours when you normally see big bucks. And the level is a 'cant reminder’ - you can't shoot with precision unless you hold your bow straight!"

IBO (International Bowhunters Organization) www.ibo.net

Of course, the Easy-Slide Extreme began with all of the superior features that made the Cobra Easy-Slide successful. At only 6.7 oz, the Extreme is a lightweight addition to the business end of your bow. Parts arc precision m- achincd to computer programmed tolerances. The high-grade wrapped optical fiber is securely attached to a metal, fieldadjustablc up-pin in the center of the 2" aluminum aperture. The bracket and extension bar are formed from a single piece of 6000-Series aluminum alloy, which is the ideal combination of strength and weight. Both the rriicrowindagc and elevation adjustments can be made with your finger-tips, without using any tools. And of course, the movable elevation bar pivots smoothly and may be locked in place for secure, silent shooting. The Easy-Slide Extreme is available in anodized, non-rcflective black or Mystic™ Camo. “I thought 1 got rid of it for good, but my target panic is back!" I've heard it more than once, from students that have come to me after using the empty bale and supposedly curing their target panic. The empty bale, or blank bale, has been the universal cure for combating panic for years. Shooting 3 to 5 yards away from the blank target butt will remove the direct cause of target panic...the target. It will take away the fear of missing and the anticipation of the shot can then be eliminated. if used correctly. Unfortunately, that’s about all most coaches and shooters know about the process. The problem is that there are more factors in play when dealing with most cases of panic, and shooters mistakenly think all you have to do is shoot lots of arrows at a blank bale, and target panic will be history. I’m here to tell...it ain’t necessarily that way! The following are some of the reasons why. even after shooting the blank bale, it may fail to get rid of your target panic permanently. 1.) Shooting on a blank bale alone won't cure vour target panic. If you don’t re-program your shot sequence that you had before and you continue to shoot your “normar’ shot sequence on an empty bale, it will not cure your panic. Target panic doesn't stem from the same causes that most people think. It normally comes from a bad, or non existent, shot sequence. Your shot sequence can be incomplete, out of order, incorrect, or non-existent, so consequently the “bad" shot sequence that a shooter has would simply be further ingrained by practicing it on the blank bale. Using the blank bale this way may help for a short period of time, but it will almost always come back with a vengeance. Because in this case, the root cause of the target panic, as always, was the shot sequence, not the target. The faulty sequence caused you to fear missing the target and removing it, removed the symptoms only. Therefore, you will probably get a very short and temporary relief from your flinching, snapshooting, flinching or punching. 1982 - 21th Anniversary - 2002

because the cause is still there. A correct sequence absorbed to the subconscious level is the foundation for predictable accuracy and the only way you’ll ever be free to aim! Here's an example of the 12 step shot sequence 1 teach in the Shooter’s School. Step 1 Foot Position. Step 2 Nock Arrow Sten 3 Hook Up Step 4 Set Bow Hand Step 5 Pre-Aim (pick a spot to draw to) Step 6 Draw to Anchor (with sight on target) Step 7 Call Shot to Order (Am 1 in control of 1 through 6?) Step 8 Commit (to the shot and to conclusion) Step 9 Start Motor (Start Back Tension, or your release method) Step 10 Aiming Moment (Mentally concentrate on the exact center.) You don't have to wrestle the sight into the center; it will go there automatically. Your subconscious is self-centering. Don't mentally leave the center to check out or help #9. Trust your subconscious program (#9 the motor) to cause let-go! You don't consciously cause it...you just consciously start the program. Don’t consciously finish it. Just aim! Step 11 Follow Through (happens anyway, because of released tension) Step 12 Conclusion (Pre-measured end to #11 that is reached AFTER the arrow is gone, such as touching your shoulder, before ending the shot.) Your sequence can be longer or shorter. but must include the above and be consistent in cadence and order, and must be brought to the subconscious level through off-target repetition, such as the empty bale, or with a Shot Trainer like my Laz-Air or my PanicMaster Bow Simulator. which 1 developed. ) Didn’t shoot the blank bale 2. exclusively. This is a pretty common reason for not succeeding on the empty bale. Shooters are not willing to give up tournaments or THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

leagues to get rid of their target panic. The empty bale or bow simulator should be shot without interruption, i.e., a complete sabbatical should be taken from shooting any and all tournaments, leagues, or targets for at least 21 days, 30 to 60 shots per day. Some personality types need up to 60 days to reprogram their sequence correctly. Otherwise, it will take much, much longer, or may not help at all. The shooter should concentrate on ingraining a specific program or personal shot blueprint (the correct shot sequence), to the subconscious level. Shooting targets in between empty bale sessions only serves to neutralize or reverse the reprogramming you 're trying to accomplish. ) Didn’t shoot the empty hale long 3. enough. Some shooters may stay on the empty bale for 2 to 5 days, not really understanding how long to stay, or what they're trying to accomplish. As soon as they think they have discovered the problem with their form, sequence, or execution, they quit the bale (because they found the problem) and then go right back to shooting targets. They failed to ingrain the change or solution theyfound into their subconscious and making it part of their total shot blueprint. They soon find their new solution has to be done consciously and they are not mentally free to aim. They soon develop the same or simi lar symptoms of target panic they used to have (freezing, snap-shooting, flinching, or punching). Then the cycle starts again. They try to treat the symptoms again, not the cause, which is a bad shot sequence not ingrained or trusted by the subconscious. That's why most psychologists agree that, on average, it takes a minimum of 21 days to change any habit, or ingrained program, depending on personality. (Some hard-heads will take much longer!) As an example, if you write left handed and decide you want to be right handed, it should take around 3 weeks before you could comfortably write with your right hand. Along the same line as #2 above, if your left hand was broken and was in a cast and you couldn't possibly write with it, you would learn pretty quickly to write with your right hand, if you repeatedly and exclusively practiced with it. If, however, your hand was not broken and you decided to Icam to write with your right hand just when it was convenient, it might take 10 times longer to learn to write comfortably with your right hand. ) Shot with eves closed all of the time 4. Shooting with your eyes closed will help you internalize, or make yourself really aware of details and techniques of the

At first, shoot with your eyes closed half of the time, forfeeling. individual parts that make up your shooting form, which is good if you are working on feeling some new aspect of your form, such as a new hand grip, or new shoulder position, etc. However, shooting with your eyes closed for every shot won't help target panic for long. In most cases, as soon as you open your eyes, you have to look at your target, and visual input was not part of whatever practice routine you were working on. Chances arc, the panic will re develop for most shooters. Most forms of target panic arc caused by a visual trigger, such as target acquisition or on target sight picture. Therefore, shooting with your eyes closed all of the time will not help most people. You should shoot with your eyes open at least half of the time. If you find yourself aiming at a straw on the empty bale, remove your sight. This will help you keep from rc-developing some types of target panics, such as snapshooting or freezing. The blank bale or shot trainers should be used to explore or change, and then re-program your shot. After that is accomplished, then you gradually introduce your new sequence to the target. ) Did not use a “bridge" from the 5.

to a target at 20 yards or more, won’t work. Moving back that quickly will usually shock your system so severely that your target panic may return. Going back to the target from the blank bale or bow simulator should be bridged, or done gradually, in stages. A typical bridge would be the “21 day program." After shooting the blank bale for 21 to 30 days, thereby reprogramming your shot and subconsciously ingraining a proper shot sequence, then try shooting at 5 yards at a 9 inch bull's-eye (no x ring), for 3 days. (Paper plates make great targets.) Don’t aim at any specific place on the bull’s-eye. Shoot one arrow only, then pull it, and start again. Anyplace in the 9 inch bull's-eye is okay! Spend a minimum of 3 days, 30 to 60 shots per day at this yardage and target size. After that, move back to 7* yards and reduce the bull's-eye to 8 inches. Spend at least 3 days at this yardage. Every 3 days, move back 2‘ yards and reduce the bull’seye one inch. Continue in this manner and at the end of 21 days, you will be shooting 20 yards at a 3 inch bull’s-eye. CAUTION! If you feel the target panic creeping back at any time at any yardage, go back to the previous yardage and spend more time there before moving back. You must execute perfectly every shot for at least 3 days at each yardage before moving back. For less severe cases, you may be able to cut down the time spent at each distance to 2 days, or even 1 day. in some cases, which would get you to 20 yards in 7 to 14 days. changing, analyzing, or exploring parts of your sequence or shot blueprint you think needs changing, improving, or you don't trust. Remember there are two very important things about this process, whether it's on an empty bale, on a bow, or my PanieMaster Bow Simulator or LazAir Shot Trainer: # I. It won't give you any answers unless you ask it questions', and #2, After you've discovered the answers to whatever it was you wanted to find out, you must now commit to the task of ingraining or grinding them into your subconscious, through repetition, until they happen automatically. You must trust them completely to work on their own. without conscious thought on your part. This is the only way to free up your conscious mind to concentrate 100% on. and be completely concerned with, the exact spot you want the arrow to go...this is true aiming! The perfect scenarios would be to dry fire your bow. or shoot arrows into a fog. (Both arc pretty expensive!) Obviously, we can’t afford to do either, so there are 3 main ways to reprogram your shot: 1.) Shoot without a target at short distances (empty bale), shoulder height. 5 or less arrows at a time, no groups. 2.) Attach a Laz-Air Shot Trainer device to your bow, which is a hydraulic device that attaches to your bow and lets the string down after your release, without dry firing. 3.) Practice with my PanieMaster and Bow Simulator, which people have found to be much less tedious than shooting the empty bale. It is a realistic simulation of shooting your bow, without the mental panic or anxiety of having to hit the bull’s-eye with an arrow and without the muscle fatigue of pulling past the peak weight. So remember, ifyou feel you have failed after going to the blank bale and your target panic has come back, you may not have been on the bale for the right reasons, asked the right questions, or practiced the right sequence, or for not long enough. We have verified, by survey, that almost 97% of shooters suffer at some point from one form of target panic or another (freezing, snapshooting, flinching, punching, or tournament nerves). It then becomes apparent that, sooner or later, nearly all of us will meet up with this phenomenon and will have to deal with it eventually. Hopefully, with this information, you should have a much better chance of success!

The Shot Doctor Don’t Give Up on Yourself by Terry Wunderle

Shot Doctor Terry ITunderle See the Shot Doctor ad on page 153.

At the Junior Olympics National Championship the top female junior archer in the World was having difficulty the first day of the tournament. The gusty 25 to 30 M.P.H. wind was giving her problems. Her name was way down on the leader board and negative talk was present in her conversation with me. It appeared that she was giving up on herself. This is a common reaction for most archers when they are not meeting their expectations. To be one of the best, you can not let these thoughts or feelings emerge. At this point, 1 admit that I lost my cool! 1 pointed out that you are never a loser as long as you try as hard as you can on every shot. If you think you can shoot shots with perfect form then you probably will. Every possible point was very important and there was still another day of shooting left. The next day she faced the tournament with a positive attitude and made up the 23 point defect to win. Two weeks later, she won the Junior World Championship in a 40 M.P.H. wind at Sweden. THE “NEEDS” OF ACCURACY IF/MT LINK IS INFERIOR YOUR RESULTS WILL BE INFERIOR. By Bob Ragsdale

Bob Ragsdale Years ago 1 had a need to coin a phrase to describe everything your bow can possibly do for you to help you shoot more accurately. In my judgment nothing could be more accurate than to say that it can only "determine the velocity of your projectile." Beyond that, it is all up to you. You must attend to its “needs of accuracy" and then let it do its job unimpeded. To make my point, count how many times your “boh'”is mentioned below as I explain what is necessary to achieve perfect scores. A VICIOUS CIRCLE. When adhered to carefully it becomes what I call the "Circle of Success." Each is directly tied to the other meaning if one is incorrect the others instantly become of only limited value. Here is what is required to achieve perfect accuracy. 1. Matched ammunition. 2. Perfect sight settings. 3. Knowing the exact distance to the target. 4. Performing the shot to allow the bow to do its job.

correctly and then aligning all between them in a perfect straight line. d. Accepting odd-spaced distance references as correct without question. This is the perfect place to consider what Robert's Rule #2 is talking about: "There’s no such thing as "close enough. " it’s either a hit or a miss and there is nothing in between. " Pins or marks improperly spaced and incorrect windage settings are misses waiting to happen because it means you arc beaten even before you start. I fthe spacing does not gradually increase as the distance increases then they are wrong and cannot possibly be correct. If all pin ends are not in perfect alignment between the correct top and bottom pins they cannot possibly be correct. If the level bubble is not at a perfect 90 degrees from the bar a single pin slides on the windage cannot possibly be correct at all distances. KNOW THE EXACT DISTANCE TO THE TARGET. Not knowing the distance to the target is the "great cop-out excuse of all time" and is used almost automatically with every high or low miss. If every excuse in the world had an ID number, this would surely be number 1. It is a low velocity and high trajectory path primitive weapon sport so in order to hit as close as possible on the first shot one of the necessary ingredients is to know the exact distance to the target. But let me assure you that every high and low miss is not because you did not know exactly how

MATCHED AMMUNITION. With your hunting rifle, odds are you wouldn't even expect to shoot tight groups if you mixed up several different brands of cartridges with several different bullet weights. But would you believe that many archers never relate this to arrows and must consider them magic. Robert's Rule #5 suggests you put numbers on your arrows and shoot all of them regularly. By noting where each impacts each time you may find that number 8 seems to always impact “low-left” and number 12 is always “high-right." Your competition hopes you never learn how to find these 2 particular arrow’s and that you keep on shooting them and blaming the bad hits on other things. In competition you’d never knowingly “donate" the points these 2 arrows lose each time they are shot nor would you plan to ruin your hunting trip intentionally, but that’s exactly what you are doing when you don’t know each arrow personally. During new setup times, think of how often you may have had everything set up exactly right but you shot that one particular arrow which lied to you so you just kept on adjusting. I love finding such arrows because when you find an arrow that doesn’t shoot exactly as the others it's the only legitimate excuse you may ever have that you are able to prove! PERFECT SIGHT SETTINGS. Is there anything about the word “perfect” you don’t understand. The most common oversights concerning sight-settings are; a. Making sight marks at the last minute and then using them Fig. 1 You wouldn’t mark these 2 inch low hits as correct without ever proving them correct. b. Marking a hit in the bottom of a 4 inch spot as correct when would you? Robert's Rule #2 warns "there is no such thing as 'dose enough.' it's either a hit or a miss and there is nothing in it's actually 2 inches low. c. Not setting the top pin and bottom sight pin windage between. " 168

far it was to the target. The situation is that any arrow is SO SLOW that on every shot your arrow is climbing halfway to the target and then falling during the second half of the trip to the target. So if you are standing closcrBoi to the target than you think you arc, your’ arrow will not have the time and distance needed to fall low enough so it will arrive early to impact high. That is a miss. And since most of us prefer to NOT do that we work hard to make sure it will not happen by knowing the exact distance as close as possible. Sorry Mac, but a "faster" arrow isn’t the answer, not by a long shot, but the simple basics we arc discussing here, are. EXECUTING THE SHOT. Many things are involved here, your shooting form, your aiming and leveling, your decision of exactly when to shoot, your

Figure 2. This is not a sight setting test. Aiming anywhere along these lines is a "grouping" check. Understand that "groups" are square, not round so you must check them separately for height and for width, but never at the same time. The rows of hits shows this setup to be shooting consistent elevation (nocking point) at the horizontal reference line and consistent width (centershot) at the vertical reference line. Using the aiming lines later for setting sight distances and sight windage will make your sight settings much more precise than accepting hits on a large area such as the gold in Figure 1.

All of these aiming precisely and executing each shot things are involved and contribute to perfectly earning you a perfect score. Did your success or failure. If any one item all those people with faster arrows beat is not correct, the others arc compromised. that? You guessed it. For Example: a. You guess the target to be at 40 yards and shoot it for 40 and find later it actually See Bob Ragsdale’s was 40, but your sight setting was really ad on page 171. only 38 yards, so you missed low. b. You executed 4 good shots in no wind on the 60 yard target, but you shot that #12 arrow which always hits high and to the right, but you didn’t know it so you reaped a high-right miss. c. Your wildlife game was standing at what you believed to be 40 yards and you executed a perfect shot with your perfect 40 yard sight setting, but it was really 44 yards, so you missed, low. Here is where you actually didn’t know the distance. d. The target is marked 50 yards and you have a perfect 50 yard setting, a favorite good arrow and you execute a great shot. with a pin not aligned to the same windage as the others. You missed to the left. A couple of typical excuses you may imagine might be: “I must have canted to the left,” or, “There must have been some wind down there I didn’t detect." (Aren’t those excuses number 435 and 197?) Sleep on this. You are shooting the slowest arrow in the tournament. But, you shoot matched arrows and have absolutely perfect sight settings. Then, all through the tournament you either leant or guess every

Mental and Physical Harmony By Roger W. Bretcrnitz Ch.T.

Roger W. Bretcrnitz Ch.T.

There arc two sides of every coin, two sides of every story and two sides of a person’s effort to win in competition. In this case we are talking about the mental and physical side of the forces exerted toward the goal line of wining instead of losing. The big question is. "How much does each one of the two powers play in the outcome?" Just to take a closer look at each one wc will create a real life situation to illustrate how it may play out. First let’s take the variable called the physical. This is how you FEEL, how your body functions, and how "Well oiled” your "Machine" is when it’s time to perform. In this case scenario let’s say you FEEL great, no aches, pains, sprains, or problems with your body, or joints, and everything is working fine. Before a shoot, you get up feeling well rested, you have just the right breakfast for your makeup, and you have just the right amount of nutrients in your system to give you the perfect level of energy without going over board, like too much coffee and caffeine, sugar or

170

Gatorade or what ever that would make you jumpy, and you’re in great shape to compete. This takes care of the physical side of your energy make up. You arc ready and looking forward to the competition ahead, but something happens to push you "Off center”. You get a phone call with a problem you can't fix right now, and it haunts you, or somebody cuts you off in traffic, and then shows you their IQ with a hand gesture. This really rubs you the wrong way and you begin to think of the ways you could solve the problem or picture their car in the crosshairs of a heat seeking rocket launcher you wanted to buy at the Army/Navy store. This is MENTAL stuff, but...it affects your physical instantly. You secrete an adrenaline rush into your muscles giving them more power and this power means strength, but less control, and your heart starts to beat faster pumping more blood to your system, your rate of breathing is increased and now your are ready to crush this insolent, dweeb of a bottom dweller into the ameba he once evolved from. Only problem...he turns off the road before you are ready and you have to go on to the shoot you were headed for in the first place. Now when you get there you are REALLY pumped, you should be using 651b. hold tension setting on your bow instead of the one you have. You tell yourself to calm down but it doesn’t happen and the first three ends you arc lucky to hit the air in front of you. This is just an example of the Dis harmony of the two halves of the mental physical equation. Both must be balanced in order to bring about the desired end result which in this case we call winning...or, just doing our best. In this case the physical started off great, but the mental threw it “Off-center” and the house of cards came crashing down. This is the story repeated so many times by each and every one of us in one kind of competition or another. Something in our environment pushes us off center and before we and set things right, we’re hearing the words, "These arc for score” and by the time wc "Get it back", it’s too late. The other side of the coin called "Mental - physical harmony" is when our mental is rock solid, but our physical is going off in several directions. There arc 1982 • 21th Anniversary ■ 2002

many different reasons for this and some of them are: I. Lack of sleep - This is the worst "Stealer" of coordination and breaker of physical ability there is. Your nervous system is a scries of electrical pathways, and for the lack of a better description, these pathways get blocked by lack of sleep. The messages don’t get delivered as fast, and your brain is writing a check your body can’t cash (Sugar Ray Leonard). You give your body instructions, but for some reason they never get carried out like you planned. 2. “Partyous Tremendousness" This is usually brought about the night before and is usually accompanied by the all to well known “Muuchious Drinkieuss". Both of these physical retardants can leave one with a serious headache, all of which is known to have a very negative effect of how many times an arrow is placed where it will do the most good in giving you a winning score. 3. Food - The wrong kind, amount, and type of food can really be a score dumpster. Too big a breakfast can slow you down like a tire around your neck, or not enough breakfast can leave you "Out of gas" before the last arrow. Just too much coffee can do it for some people, and some who arc hypoglycemic or diabetic can blow it with a jelly donut. Realize what is good for you and stick to it so you’ll be in your best physical form when you step up to the line for your fist arrow. The definition of harmony is the “Working together of two or more forces bringing about a positive or desired end". Take time to know your body and what it “Likes" as far as the type and amount of food, get enough sleep and give yourself plenty of time Io get to your competitive arena so you can arrive relaxed and centered. Then just let your automatic pre programmed responses take over and you WILL shoot the best you can shoot. That’s all anyone can ask of themselves, the best of luck, and Good Shooting Roger THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

in your state or even your club, who have shoot this tournament in the past. Ask around, talk to archers who have been there. Ask if they have any pictures of the site, try to visualize yourself at that site. There is an official practice day before the tournament. You must check in, ask questions then. Arrive early and practice on your assigned target, it should be marked on the scoreboard. Try to travel, eat and shoot with friends. You will still find the location unfamiliar, on your practice day walk and check the different entrances, restrooms, concession area, plus equipment, spectators and shooting areas; take pictures. In a large convention center for Indoor the lighting can seem dim. it is the same for everyone. I shoot sometimes in my back yard just before dusk to practice (no lights). As the light fades I try to gel in one more end. As the target fades I concentrate on execution, form and timing; my groups get better. This is my positive thinking, I can shoot anywhere ; never say “the lighting is bad". Your have plenty of time to shoot your arrows. Take a deep breath, calmly wait for the signal to start shooting before you raise your bow. Shoot at your own pace, it seems courteous to alternate shots with the archers next to you. This may change your routine and timing. It is your game, maintain it for your comfort. You must remain positive and confidant, to perform well, with yourself and your equipment. It may seem crowded with 500 or more archers shooting at one scoring round. Arrive before your scheduled shooting time, get set up and find a safe resting place for your bow. Look around, it should look like the pictures your friend showed you. Check a path to the nearest bathroom. Now set down and visualize shooting this round at your home range. Wow! All these archers have shot this round on their home range. The rules are standard worldwide, we are all here to do the same thing, shoot archery. They think everyone is watching them, you are going to shoot a good game, one arrow at a time. Think pleasant, positive thoughts about your shooting. You have two practice ends to get into your game. There arc no limits on your skills, you know your average; you can shoot the best you can. The score will take care of itself; think, relax and execute every shot.

SHOOTING STYLES by ORGANIZATION Let’s start with the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) because they are the most diverse in shooting styles. First division of competition arc seniors male and female, pro male and female.

Jake’s Rules for Archery Courtesy Z Consideration of you fellow archer’s equipment must be exercised, never touch equipment without permission. Z Each group on the target should help others find arrows before returning or going on to the next target or end. Z Do not take more then five minutes to hunt for lost arrows; mark the score card and go on, you can look later. Z While shooting, an archer should not be distracted by loud talking or excessive activity from on or behind the shooting line. This requires some concentration on the shooters part and the consideration and courtesy of their fellow archers. Z Before going to or leaving the shooting line wait for archers next to your shooting position to complete their shot. This should only be necessary after an archer reaches full draw. Z It is the responsibility’ of the shooter to know the rules and how the round is shot and abide by this knowledge. Such education should be the function of the local archery clubs with the help of their state organization. Z The only way to find out who is the best shot is for everyone to shoot their best. One must earn something to feel accomplishment. Z Archery is a life sport, it is our responsibility to enjoy and share our sport.

From the Senior Corner By Joe Bauernfeind Welcome to the Senior Comer, spring edition. I don't know where you are but spring in the Northeast was awful. The temperatures were 4-5 degrees below normal and the rainfall was up to the level where my wife's flowers were rotting in their pots. This is supposed to be the time of the year when we put away our 2614’s and break out the carbons for some outdoor action. As usual, in early April, practicing for the upcoming 3,J and final leg of the NFzXA’s Three Star Tour was difficult or impossible to do. If it wasn't raining or too cold to shoot, the wind was blowing down the doors and windy day practice for Atlantic City is an exercise in futility. Everyone has the same complaint coming into this shoot though and the top guns shoot the same great scores every year despite it, so I guess if you've got your “shot" together, the scores will be there. As you may remember from the last issue, this was to be the big showdown with the Mutt for barking rights for the new archery year. As sometimes happens, the showdown was a letdown. Mr. Miller tried to sidestep the match by sliding into the Senior Championship Flight, (for money), leaving me in the Senior Unlimited Division, (for medals). Well, neither of us got what he was after. I did beat his score on the first day but not with a score I'm going to mention here. He was so disgusted after the first round that he packed up and went home, forfeiting any rights to claim the “top dog” title for this year. I shot a different bow for the second round; searching for the magic I didn't bring with me and failed to find it. I'm too embarrassed to lay claim to the keys to the “doghouse" so Harry will rule by default. unless I can arrange another shot at him this year. I do offer my congratulations to all of the winners, especially my buddies Larry Hix. Pete Lucas and Tony Tazza, who all won using Zenith releases. Tony. a regular on the 3D pro circuit and shooting his first A. C. Classic, shot a perfect 600 on the second day. beating out the top shooters in archcry. That’s only the second perfect ever recorded in the Classic, a major feat when you consider the pressures felt when shooting fora major title and the prize money that comes with it, which included S200 from the Zenith Pot O' Gold. Rumors were flying that Tony may have to defend his title at a different venue next year. Word has it that the 3 Star Tour organizers are looking for a new site in the Northeast that will better suit their fiscal needs. Stay tuned 174

for news on this. I'd love to go back to the old building on the boardwalk, which is being refurbished, but I understand that there will no longer be enough open space to host a shoot of this size. The first leg of the IBO National Triple Crown in Bedford. Indiana was the next stop on the schedule for me and as usual in Indiana in the spring it was rainy and muddy. This is bad if you’re shooting but good if you have an indoor vendor area to set up in and the White River Bow Hunters have a beauty. I’m trying to eliminate most of the outdoor under the tent style shoots from my schedule. They're great when it’s warm and sunny but these old bones don’t deal too well with the rainy, cold weather in the spring or the hot, humid days of summer. The major news from Bedford was the first win, in the pro division, of Bill Scnnick. a popular long time 3Dcr. who beat out JcffHopkins for the title. I’m sure Bill was happy in finally seeing the hard work of past years pay off. Way to go big guy! The event which got me started doing this column for Arlync. the National Senior Olympics, was next on the schedule for me and if you've been reading the Comer since the beginning, it was almost a carbon copy. for me, of the 1999 games at Disney World in Orlando. The drive to the games, the week in a rented condo, this time on Virginia Beach, with my wife, two daughters and three grand children and the windy shooting conditions, were like deja vu all over again, as Yogi would say. The big difference for me personally, was that I gave up on the bike races at the games and wasn't suffering the after effects of my latest crash. 1 must have had an omen on the races, as 1 heard from a friend that the

road race was the site of a major multi-bike pile up, leading to several injuries. The major difference for the archers in general was the shooting venue and even more wind. The soccer pitch we shot on in Orlando was perfect, right down to the last blade of grass. No weeds or crabgrass allowed by the Disney perfectionists on this field. In contrast, the field used for the archery in this year’s games was anything but perfect. It was nestled in between a busy garbage transfer facility (sec the photo) and what appeared to be, from the barred

windows, a former prison or psychiatric facility. When the wind shifted to the west. the smell of the garbage wafted over us and the truck noise was ever present no matter which way the wind blew. Clearly not up to the standards set at the previous games In defense of the NSGA, the venue, we were told, was supposed to have been on the Naval base in Norfolk but due to security reasons had to be shifted to another site. I’m dubious about that excuse though since, as far as I know, the base has been secured since 9/11. Whatever the reason they should have had a better alternate site for an event of this stature. Maybe 2005 in Pittsburgh or 2007 in Louisville will see them back on track. The other major missstep was the failure to supply enough target butts to Tim Austin and his crew to allow them to shoot with the standard four archers per butt. The recurve and compound fingers groups had no problem with this but the compound release shooters were forced to shoot six on a target. This necessitated three arrow ends to lessen the chance of arrow damage, with 36 arrows THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER

in the target at once but doubled the distance walked and extended the time to marathon proportions. I’ve voiced my opinion about the length of the 90 arrows 900 round vs. the 60 arrows 600 round for shooters whose age ranges up into the 90's and beyond but Tim’s cars are closed on this. Something about causing all of the games records to be rewritten. I don’t see that as being a problem though. 1 think the current record holders would be happy to see their scores written in stone and that everyone would be happy to have a chance to make a new record of their own. Feel free to voice your opinions to Tim on this one. I’m not bashing Tim here. He’s done a fantastic job with the games he’s run and his scoring and awards system are second to none. Check out the pictures of his scoreboards and scorecard box displayed below.

Let me hit some of the highlights for you and then I’ll wrap it up for this issue. One handed archer, Ted Vance, and his home invented tongue operated release aid. Ted used a belt cup and shoulder sling to hold the bow while he loaded his arrow and used his tongue to trigger the release. Whoever said the only way to shoot a trigger was with back tension? Larry Hix and Ellis Gibson locking homs for the entire two days, only to finish in a dead heat, with Larry prevailing in the X count for the Gold and Bob Baskind sliding into third for the bronze. Bob set new Senior National and World Indoor records this past winter in the Masters 60 division with scores of 584 and 587.
