The year 2000 has been an exciting year in many archer’s lives. This issue features the 2000 Olympics and the Paralympics which were exciting events for all attending. Congratulations to everyone, the competitors, the volunteers and the organization's staffs. All of you make a great Archery Team! Don’t forget to compliment each other. As this year of 2000 winds down, (this is being written at the end of the year) my thoughts are going back to 1994. Attending my first IFAA World Championships, the WFAC-1994 at Bury St. Edmonds in England, my involvement in the sport of Field Archery was extended beyond my imagination. A pan of my duties as the President of the National Field Archery Association of the United States was, to attend the IFAA Committee meeting as the U.S. delegate. My comments regarding that meeting in 1994, have always included this observance: sitting in a room with the other 21 delegates of IFAA affiliated nations, the IFAA Officers and others, I found myself unable to understand even one of the delegates who-were all speaking English. At the time I marveled at the patience it took to handle each Legislative Item to its conclusion. To this day, I continue to marvel at this process. Because ofexperience gained at that meeting, my method is to proceed very slowly on each item and to make sure each delegate understands the item to his/her
satisfaction. (Words of English do not always mean the same to all people) During times the meetings were in recess, I was approached by several groups- asking me to stand for the office of IFAA President. At first I was hesitant to reply instead, saying I would consider it. For the life of me, I could not imagine why nor, even the possibility ofthat happening. As the President of NFAA- USA, my term was fast approaching an . end. I had already declined nomination A for a further term. The upshot was of /.\ course, the possibilities were Z'LA explored and my election to the /f IFAA Presidency in K' 1995 is a matter of record-as ® ® well as re" elections to this date. Why do my thoughts return to 1 9 9 4 ? Perhaps,with 'tfoasspr the re election for the 2001-2002 term of office, this has the possibility of being my last. This then, brings to mind the question -

What, if anything, has been accomplished during these past six years? The role of IFAA President is described in the IFAA Constitution in these terms: to preside at all meetings of the IFAA Committee or, any other duly constituted body; To appoint standing and special committees; To initiate and develop activities of the IFAA Committee or any other duly constituted body and; To conduct the affairs of the association in accordance with the programs, policies and budgets, established by the IFAA committee. In the role of President, it has been my intention to lead the IFAA to a higher level of International and National recognition. Generally, the IFAA Committee has - through their consideration and careful deliberation made it possible to exercise new thoughts and actions. Be sure -1 do not lay claim to doing anything by myselfl I have a great deal of respect and pride in our IFAA Committee for their spirit of cooperation in taking actions to move our association into new areas and, new endeavors. World Bowhunter Championship was re-written. This was forwarded as a means of providing a greater uniformity to thisevent Eventhough the organiser of such an event is able to present the WBHC in a manner which may be different from another WBHC, the format comes from a known and recognizable source. The IFAA Committee accepted this premise and enacted the legislation that was forwarded for their consideration. In 1996 the IFAA put forth the first ever IFAA World Indoor Championship and, the years of 1998 and 2000 saw repeats of this tournament. In recommending the addition of this tournament to IFAA’s schedule, the main compulsion was, ifwe are to lay out rules for this game - we must provide the ultimate recognition for those who participate in that sector of the sport. That recognition comes through an IFAA World Championship venue. Unfortunately, this world championship appears to be in

trouble. After awarding the 2001 event (for the first time on the rotating schedule basis) to the IFAA affiliate for Singapore, nothing more was heard from the affiliate. During November of 2000, with the event less than a year away, the bid was retracted. No new host has surfaced, which places the very future ofthe Indoor championship in jeopardy. During 2000, a committee appointed by the President,
developed a format for a fourth IFAA World Championship the IFAA World 3-D Championship. The 3-D committee, under the chairmanship of past IFAA President Syd Green of Australia, was charged with considering two items in particular. The format should be one that would be familiar to IFAA competitors - not a copy of what existed at the time. The format should include provisions that would allow 3-D targets from any part of the world to be utilized in the IFAA 3-D games, without prejudice. Rational for adding a 3-D championship was: 3-D is a legitimate form of Field Archery; IFAA makes provision for 3-D within its current WBHC format; No legitimate International entity exists for world certification of 3-D championships; Recognized 3-D targets are generally available from the United States only. This can, and does, place an undue financial burden on any organiser of 3-D events.) The 3-D format was approved and accepted by the IFAA Committee in its meeting of2000 in South Africa. The first event is scheduled for April 2001 in Orange, Australia. The second event will occur during 2002 at a location undetermined at this time. From 2002, the event will occur each two years thereafter, on the even year.
These items of change deal mostly with the games and championships sponsored by IFAA. In addition to this we should add the “Champion of Nations” event. The basic concept ofthe Champion of Nations was worked out by three IFAA Officers, during the period of WBHC-95 in Australia. The Vice President of IFAA, the late Dorothy Southgate,
IFAA Secretary, Loet Smit, and I, tackled a suggestion by Dorothy regarding the need for such an event. During an on-going meeting of the officers, this was discussed and, at the conclusion of the WBHC, an agreement to a rough format, was hammered out in a Hotel in Sydney, Australia. The event was added to the World Field Archery Championship in 1996 and the following WFAC events in 1998 and 2000. The IFAA Committee amended and accepted the Champion of Nations Format at its last meeting. Even though the Champion of Nations event does have its detractors, this event has captured the interests ofboth the competitor and even the media to which we have limited access. The intent has been to honor the nations through the recognition of their archers in a team format. During the last months of 1999 and the first few months of2000, we became aware that some IFAA approved paper animal target faces no longer complied with IFAA specifications. My guess as to how this has happened is, the various targets were changed from time to time without notification to the IFAA. By approving a series of suggestions presented at the meeting of the IFAA Committee for information, the Committee paved the way for the item to be presented to the full committee via a Postal Vote. This item was passed and entered into the new IFAA Book ofRules to be effective on 1 January 2001. By so addressing this subject, the IFAA Committee has provided a solution to the situation. All target manufacturers and/or national entities that control change to their targets, have been given six months in which to bring the targets into compliance with IFAA specifications. On 1 July 2001, those targets that have not been brought into compliance will no longer be approved by IFAA. Targets previously approved by IFAA were: Freitag (Germany); Guthrie (Republic of South Africa); NFAA (USA); Saunders (USA); ABA (Australia) and: Martin Archery (USA) Of these, only the Guthrie target set # 1 was in compliance. In addi tion, Guthrie set #2 was approved in July of2000. The balance of the targets fall into these categories of none compliance: Saunders - no longer produced; Martin Archery, being approached to see if they are interested in bringing their target into compliance; ABA, has indicated they will bring their targets into compliance; Freitag, has Continued on page 13,

apparently been purchased by the German IFAA affiliate who has indicated they will bring them into compliance. Note: These targets have been approved and can be seen on the IFAA website. NFAA - USA, target set no longer used by NFAA. Owner Finnwood, indicated they will consider bnnging their faces into compliance. NOTE: The current NFAA (USA) animal targets have never been approved and, are not in compliance with IFAA specifications. All targets approved on or before 1 July 2001, will be under a lighter control from that point forward. Each year, the nation (or manufacturer) will be asked to certify their targets continue to be in compliance with IFAA standards. Each three years, an appointee of the IFAA President will physically measure all target sets for approval, which will be extended for another three years subject to continued compliance. These actions ensure that I FA A targets will be standard throughout the world. There are other steps that have been undertaken over these years however, in my opinion, these are the major items acted upon by the IFAA Committee. There are many legislative items brought before the Committee that are not earth shaking in nature. I repeat my opinion of the IFAA Committee - They are thoughtful and careful in their deliberations. Let me go back to the beginning of this article. One of the reasons for my eventual agreement to stand for the office of IFAA President was how it would impact on my own national association. The NFAA-USA (in my opinion) had never been as active an affiliate within the IFAA as it perhaps should have been. My hope was that a possible election to the office of IFAA President would provide the impetus for the NFAA-USA to become more active. It would surely be agreed that my urging (through my columns of the past six years) has resul ted in a greater awareness and participation ofthe NFAA-USA archers. The fact that the association has hosted the first three IFAA World Indoor Championships, Has entered a full team and won, the first three Champion of Nations contests and, Has carried their fair share of IFAA’s Championship events, should point to that increased interest. However, recent legislation enacted within the NFAA-USA appears to have diminished the possibility ofcontinuance along thcselines. We can only hope that the NFAA-USA, because of their influence in the sport and, status as an original founder of the IFAA, would become an ever increasing and influential affiliate of the IFAA. Archer’s Advantage allows you to fur ther select your Brace Height, Draw Length, Peak Weight, Let Off Percentage or Holding Weight and Bow Length. Each of these parameters go into Archer’s Advantage’s calculations to determine how much energy your bow puts into an arrow under launch. You can even enter your own Force Draw Data to customize the software further for your bow. Once you have fully characterized your bow, Archer’s Advantage automatically estimates your IBO Speed, AMO Speed and the speed of any shaft you select. There are many factors that can introduce uncertainty to these reported speed esti mates. However, you can update the speed estimates from cither the Manufacturer’s reported IBO or AMO Speeds or more precisely from your own Arrow’s Chronographed speed or Calculated Speed from Sight Settings. This simple calibration process enables Archer’s Ad vantage to determine how much energy your bow applies to a shaft with un matched accuracy.
A Shaft Selection Form uses the bow in formation supplied above to determine which shafts will work with your bow. The Shaft Selection Form allows you to select Release Type: Fingers. Rope Release, Jaws Release or Tied Loop. The software further allows you to select Arrow Length. Point Weight, String Material and Over draw Length. Archer’s Advantage automatically gen erates a list of all Shaft Sizes from various Manufacturers that will work with this setup. The list includes Manufacturer, Model, Size, Spine, Estimated Arrow Weight, and Estimated Arrow Speed. This unbiased report allows you to directly compare the performance of shafts from different manufacturers. When you select one of these shafts, Archer’s Advantage indicates how close to optimal spine the shaft is on a custom control. If you find that the shaft is a little on the stiff side or a little on the weak side, you can change things like Peak Weight, Arrow Length and Point Weight and immediately see the effect on spine by observing the custom control. If you find that the shaft you are currently shooting does not show up on the list, you can select the shaft independently and play with Arrow Length, Point Weight, Peak Weight, etc. to determine what changes you should make to get the shaft to work for you. Frank H. Scott Dies Unexpectedly November 4,2000
Gainesville, FL - Frank H. Scott, Director of the Fred Bear Museum, headquartered at the North American Archery Group LLC in Gainesville, died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 4lh. He was 79 years old. Bom in Ekin, Indiana, Frank was Fred Bear’s first employee. Traveling with his family on the circus-county fair-vaudeville circuit in the 1930s, Frank discovered that following Fred Bear around and helping with his archery demonstrations was more to his liking and perhaps gave him more independence than traveling with his illustrious family, “The shooting Mansfields.” When he met Fred Bear, Frank gave up .22 trick shooting for the bow and arrow and never looked back. During his service with the US Army during World War II, Frank was decorated with the two Purple Heart following action in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to work with Fred Bear, whose small shop was still located in Detroit, Michigan. Colt was trying to go into archery and wanted someone who know archery. Archery never thinned entirely in Frank’s blood, however, and he eventually returned to Bear Archery which had moved to Grayling Michigan since Frank’s departure in the’50s. Sales Manager Bob Kelly asked Frank to come back when sales rep Ed Marks for the northeast passed away. Fred put him to work in sales management and he worked in one capacity or another, certainly including the Museum, in sales and promotion for Bear (and its 16

Realizing that there was no archery pro shop within 25 miles of Gainesville in any direction, he and the Bear management team redeveloped the Museum pro-shop. Selling at full mark-up to avoid any hint of underselling its dealer network, Frank built the pro shop into one of Bear’s largest dealerships.
To the archery community, however, Frank is perhaps best known as an avid archery historian, and enthusiastic bowhunter until the very year he died (primarily Nova Scotia bears) and a genuine personality. Frank was truly a member of the “old guard.” The man worked his way up from sweeping and cleaning up the original Bear store in Michigan to a trusted position with Bear, now a member of the North American Archery Group LLC. “He is going to be missed deeply,” says Joe White, Vice President Sales/Marketing at the North American Archery Group. “He was a member of the Archery Hall of Fame and the Michigan Bow Hunters Hall of Fame. His passing is a sorrowful thing for the entire community of Gainesville where he was a Mason, a member of the Shrine Club, the First Lutheran Church... and, an avid Florida Gator fan. We loved Frank, so his sudden and totally unexpected death leaves us all in shock.” Frank is survived by his wife, Elly Robertson Scott, of Gainesville. Bonus-Point System Commentary
In this article, we arc publishing several commentaries and responses to the proposed and novel “Bonus-Point" system outlined in my article that appeared in the July-August issue of US and International Archer magazine. Truthfully, 1 am very pleased with having generated enough interest on the subject and to have received considerable input and valuable commentary from archers in the U.S. and from distant countries throughout the world. In reality, the “Bonus-Point” system is merely another approach to scoring and a positive suggestion that comes from a very concerned archer who has been in the sport of archcry for nearly six decades. Like many others, I am concerned about the future of archcry and about the importance of attracting new shooters to our sport. So far, the “Bonus-Point" system of scoring is based solely on the element of hope and much speculation. I also find that what is good for the majority may be totally unacceptable to the elite top shooters and pros. By all indications, I can generally relate that top shooters don’t buy it and that the remainder of archers arc divided between adopting the “Bonus-Point" system or abandoning the idea completely. While it may be said that interest in archery is declining and that archcry's worse enemy is our ever changing and extremely demanding fast pace of living, the ever popular and ongoing use of the “compound bow" in archcry continues to grow and to hold its own throughout the world and in the U.S. This statement is verified by the astonishing number of participants that take part in 3-D archery in the US. For example, at the 2000 IBO World Championships held in August of the past year, the tournament
attracted over 2200 shooters including several recurve and traditional bow shooters who took part and competed in this great and popular tournament. There must also be something very popular and attractive about the “one-arrow" 3-D concept introduced to the world of archery sometime during the late eighties. As most of us know and realize, 3-D archery also requires the shooter to judge the distance to each target before making and executing each shot. This popular form of archcry has also become the best practice available for bowhunting as compared to other forms of archcry competition that arc based on marked yardages and multiple arrow shooting formats. It is the opinion of this writer that the easier and shorter that we make our shooting rounds, the more participants we will attract to our tournaments and competition by giving them a better chance to enjoy archery to the fullest extent. Luckily for new shooters, modem day archcry and improved equipment are still advancing and making great strides in our great sport. However, leaders of the industry feel that it is imperative for all of us to make an all-out effort to recruit new shooters and to maintain our present ranks of archers. We can make this happen. if we are willing to dedicate the necessary time and effort required for reaching and attaining these goals. If new archers can experience immediate success in hitting what they arc shooting at, chances are good they will continue shooting and will stay in archcry depending on their success and prowess with a bow and arrow. Following are several responses that we have received from readers regarding the all-new “Bonus-Point" system. Make certain to read what Dick Sage of Archcry Magazine fame has to say about several previous ideas that have appeared in the sport of archcry over the years. I also recommend reading and examining Mr. Schweitzer’s clever variation of the "Bonus-Point” scoring system. His approach definitely shows what clever concepts and ideas can bring about with regards to developing new and exciting rounds of archery. regulations designed to “level the playing field.” This usually occurred after a rather rapid growth period over the first few years. Of course, each type of shooting had some aspect of competition in it from the beginning. We shot against each other and every club had a few who were always able to beat the rest of us. Yet, it didn’t seem to bother most of us. Wc just kept plugging along content with doing our thing to the best of our abilities. The fact wc couldn’t beat everyone, never seemed to deter us. But, after time, we found our “fun competitions" turning into full blown knock down and drag out events. Winning was important; having fun was being pushed into the background. We still went but found we had to spend some of our time standing and waiting while the “perfectionists” took forever to shoot their four arrows. Wc were aware they shot better by shooting slower, but wc didn't necessarily do better as wc cooled our heels. Our 56 target events turned into marathons. Even after wc cut down to 28 target shoots, wc were in the same bind. Gradually, wc went to fewer and fewer tournaments and. eventually, none at all. We still shot in the informal club activities but there were not so many of us. Of course, wc had an element who couldn’t stand being beaten and they rapidly bit the dust. But a lot of us just abandoned organized archcry shooting. Took too long, was much less fun and wc could get our kicks with our bows in other ways. I’ve often thought about the comparison between archery and golf. I am a very active golfer but, during the years when 1 had to work for a living, golf was a “Saturday thing". And, it took a whole Saturday because of the crowds. I gave up golf until the additional free time of being retired came along. I play golf several times a week now but never on a weekend. My excuse is 1 want to give the workers time to be on the course. The fact is I don’t like to take 6 hours to play on a weekend when I can do a round
in 4 during the week. When I golf I do so with several companions and we are all about the same skill level. It bothers me not that Tiger Woods can do better on a course than 1 have any hope of doing. I am not competing against Tiger. But. in archery, even though they try with classifications, it is hard to escape the idea you're not competing against the very best. It leads to discouragement. I don’t know how the “golf arrangement” could be adapted to archery but it is worth some thought. Equipment availability has helped. The competency of the average archer today has risen significantly, partly because of equipment, partly because of better instruction. Yet, if you look at the pro instructors, they make it so complicated the average archer may just throw in the towel. Perhaps it is necessary to bring out the fine points as certain writers do. but it sure turns me

Hi fellow archers and welcome to the third millennium. The real entry into the new millennium got lost in the year 2000 change over, but if you look at it logically this is the real thing. If the first year in our AD calendar had been given the date 0000 instead of 0001 all of the confusion could have been avoided. Look at it this way. If you were bom the first day of the start of the AD calendar or 0/0/01, you would be 10 years old on 0/0/11, not on 0/0/10.1 know most of you are thinking,” Who cares and why is this guy dredging this all up again”. Well, I’m a little short of material, as usual, for a winter article and I’m trying to stretch out what I have with some of my nuggets of wisdom. Sometimes when I get up in the morning, 1 feel old enough to think 1 may have been around when it all came down anyway.

I hope you arc all looking forward to a good year 2001. I’m excited by all the things we have planned for this year and I hope to see a lot of you faithful readers at some point in my travels. At the end of last year I asked my daughter and son in law, Janet and Bob Wood if they would like to join me in my archcry business and eventually take over the reins, and they agreed to do it. I really didn’t want to build it into anything more then a nice pastime if there was no one to benefit from it, but now they’ve given me a reason to it. We’ll be kicking it off at this year’s AMO show in Indianapolis, Jan. 26-28. If you’re going, stop by booth #1540 and say hello, or if you can’t be there, check out the website Bob has built at www.zcnitharchery.com. He’s got a gift for computers and design that 1 think will help us a lot in getting this thing to fly. If you get to the website, there’s a schedule you can look at that lists what shows I’ll be at this year. I hope to see as many of you as possible, as I sure enjoy it when I meet someone who reads this column face to face. What’s that? You haven't got a computer and can’t get to the Internet. I though we went through all of this once before and that by now everyone would be hooked up. If you’re still holding off, hoping it will all go away, forget it. Jump in and try it. It’s a great pastime and helps to keep the old brain clicking and the fingers nimble. You should sec me at the keyboard! I tried to learn to touch type but I’m afraid 1 don’t have enough time remaining for that. Wish I’d learned it as a kid. but it wasn't considered a "guy" thing when I was a lad. The youngsters now will learn it as a matter of course and that’s good. Some things you’re taught stay with you through the rest of your life and help you every day. Other things, like Latin and Solid Geometry don’t help me much these days. I’ve also found another computer site that helps keep me up with the new things in archery. Look at the message boards link at www.archerynetwork.com and you’ll find all kinds of discussions and help there. Join in if you need an answer to something, it’s free and it’s easy. If you have something to share, you may be able to help someone else yourself. I haven't seen any schedule yet for the archery events at the Senior Games, but that should be coming out soon. If you’re going, do some heat training as I'm sure it will be hot. Also, if you know someone who has qualified but is still not committed to going, give them a push in the right direction. It would be nice to hit the magic 300 archers number this year. That’s it for now. Hopefully, I’ll have a little more to write about next time and you’ll be well on your way to your best season yet.

As my wife Jan and 1 travel the archery tournament and show circuit promoting our instructional videos and conducting the mobile Shooter’s School for NFAA. we get lots of questions about judging yardage to 3-D targets. Because we've interviewed and videoed so many pros over the years, we've been lucky enough to pick-up dozens of little “secrets to success” and pass them on in our videos and shooter’s schools. Lots of them arc shared with us by 3-D legend and # 1 “good guy”, Burley Hall in his video, “Winning at 3-D". Because this video is chocked full of inside tips and info, including timing, tiller tuning, secrets of speed, shooting form and many more, it has become one of our #1 selling videos. Regarding yardage estimation, one of the more innovative techniques is “Head Yardage." This refers to setting the pins to the way you over-estimate or under estimate yardage, rather than by setting them to actual, tape measured 20, 30, 40, and 50 yard increments. By keeping track at your next few tournaments, and logging each and every miss as to whether it is high, low, left, or right, you can go back and check your log to see where all your misses were. There is usually a pattern. If your misses were left or right, at 9 o’clock or 3 o’clock, then move back to close yardage and work on your shooting form. If your misses were high or low, at 12 o'clock or 6 o’clock, you can adjust your pins to how you over or under-estimated the yardage. This is “Head Yardage". As an example of what happened to Burley, he says, “On 400 point courses, I was consistently shooting 388 to 394. 1 couldn’t seem to get those few extra points. I started keeping track of my misses, and after about 6 shoots, I found out that 99% of my misses were out the bottom of the 10 ring. What 1 did was set my pins to the way I under-estimated yardage, which
ended up being about 3 yards short. Now my “20 yard pin" is zeroed in at 23 yards, because when I look at a 23 yard target, my head tells me it’s only 20 yards. So, I made my 20,30,40, and 50 yard pins about 3 yards “hotter". Now my sight settings arc about 23,33,43, and 52. Can you remember a time or even a day in your life when you were right on. dead center, couldn’t do anything wrong, and everything you touch turned to gold. If it was sports related, you felt a super heightened consciousness, you felt as if your mind was expanded into almost knowing the future moves of your opponent/s. or in this case archery, you felt as if you could almost reach out and touch the bull’s-eye as you aimed, and knew positively that your arrow was definitely going to go there each and every time.. .and it did! Everything was right on that day. you must have had just the right breakfast. or maybe no breakfast at all. just the right amount of nutrients in your system, the right amount of sleep, or for some people. enough sleep, and everything just clicked into place like it was meant to be. At that time you were in what I will call a “Winner's State of Mind", because all you had to do to win was just to do what came naturally and very fluidly, without trying, straining, or becoming tense because you were afraid you weren’t going to win. or to be your best, or to come out ahead, you may not of even cared if you won or maybe never thought you could win. It was all so easy then wasn’t it
....before you got really good and won your first tournament in the C or B division. Then on to the A level of competition, now you’ve got to really bear down and concentrate because these shooters at this level don’t mess around...you thought. You’re shooting good scores, you’ve pre programmed your automatic responses and you know what to do, but you’ve never won an A level shoot, against the shooters you once thought were tops. Now one day everything is perfect, the weather is great, your equipment is tuned perfect, and you feel fantastic. You go out there and tear ’em up. You win. and you even shoot better that some of the AA shooters you thought were Gods. You...have...arrived! You were shooting from a winner’s state of mind. You had not reached the top yet so there was no fear of losing, I mean losing a reputation, a position, or a self-image of a top shooter, and you had none of these fears to cloud your concentration, or perception of the events around you. It was totally your state of mind that took you to the winner's circle. Wouldn’t be great if we could return to that perfect winner's state of mind that we had on that one special day or time we can remember when we could walk on water?

You can, any time you want to, there arc just a few tricks, exercises, and a bit of new knowledge you need to know. It is definitely a learned response to be able to return to that state, and nobody says it is easy. The mind is an extremely powerful thing, just like a bulldozer, but if you only know how to drive a car. a bulldozer won’t even start up for you. Knowledge is rightfully king, when you have the right knowledge you can accomplish the task at hand easily, but even the simplest task can't be accomplished if you don't know where to find the start button. Returning to that state, the Winner's state, is much like a little mouse running a maze. Once he learns the maze he can run it again the second time faster with less mistakes. For you, learning how to return to that winner's state is like learning the maze. There arc certain things you must know about yourself, what kind of a person you are, how you take in information, and how you learn at a rate that is comfortable to you. A new psychological science called Neuro-Linguistic Programming tells us that some people learn by visual, some by listening or audio, and some by their feelings or as it is called. Kinesthetic. If you are a visual person you SEE things in your memories and replay events in this manner, if you arc Audio in your memories you Icam by listening and hearing your surroundings, and if Kinesthetic you remember the feelings more about all your past successes and failures. Here is an EXCERSISE: Sit in a comfortable chair with no distractions around you. and relax. Take a few deep breaths, and let all the tension of the day drain out of your body. Now, go back to a time that we talked about earlier. A time when you were right on, dead perfect. In your mind, start the day out just like it happened all over again, what you had for breakfast, what you did, heard, and said to those around you. Make it real.. If you are a visual person...SEE all of the surroundings in great detail, but this time make the mental movie BIGGER., BRIGHTER, CLOSER, than before. Sec THE U.S. and INTERNATIONAL ARCHER
yourself doing a perfect job of executing shot after shot with dead center accuracy. Feel like you felt at the time. Now...think of a word or phrase that sums that feeling all up into one nutshell. A word or phrase that is easy to remember, this is your power or trigger word that you will as they say in NLP, Anchor this state of mind to be recalled when ever you say or think this word or phrase. Say the word out loud, and clap your hands together loudly or slap you thigh when you say it to give you a physical anchor along with an audio anchor. If you arc an Audio person who by nature is a little lower keyed person, using sounds and listening as a means of learning new information, then as you relive this experience, HEAR all of the sounds that made this day special. Make is LOUDER, stronger, and bring it up right in front of you, hear the voices of those around you as the events unfold, and get the same feeling you had at that time. Then...come up with that word or phrase that will be your anchor to cause you to quickly return to that state. If you arc a very, low keyed, slow talking, low resonance to your voice, no hand gestures when you talk, kind of person, then you are probably in the minority of people who arc called Kinesthetic, and arrange their life around FEELINGS. It is your job to recreate the FEELING you had because it will begin to recreate more times when you arc in this center of power, and winning more and more. There is nothing like winning to instill greater confidence. Set a special time for your visualization or “Winner Therapy" each day or twice a week at least, no matter how great your success, you still need to do it. Each time you play this mental movie, make sure to use the LAST time you were in your center of power for your visual, auditory, or kinesthetic play-back, then call up your Anchor word or phrase. This creates an upward spiral that just gets more powerful each time we do it. When you FEEL like you are back there in that spot, think of your anchor word, and let it seep into you totally, FEELING every aspect of that moment. Then shortly before you walk out on the line, and the range captain says. "This is for score", say your Anchor word and get ready to break some records. All of us have had the moment of miracle, that hour of power, and that day when you were THE man or the THE woman. You were totally centered, totally in control, and when you leant to return to that state you were in at the time, you can achieve the same results you had the last time you were in that place of control. Also, the more times you return to that place using your anchor word or phrase the easier is becomes, because each time your “Anchor” has more power than the time before, in that it gives you more confidence that it will work because it worked the last time. This entire process is called “Anchoring", and it can be used to help you to return to any state that you find beneficial, in ANY area of your life, not just archery, or competition in sports. We all have the power within us. it's just opening the channel with relaxed confidence, and allowing this power to flow through us, guiding us, rather than blocking it with fear of losing or in some cases the fear of winning. This gives new meaning to the old phrase you sec on the front ofTcc shirts, “No Fear". It's simple, be more concerned about just relaxing, and enjoying the moment, becoming part of the experience, and the rest will take care of itself. Winning must be a by-product of the enjoyment of competition, not the other way around. The best of luck, and good shooting!

Stay Relaxed It was four hours before my line time to start the World Championship. One of my friends looked at me and said. “What are you frowning about?” I replied, "1 was thinking about those mountains. There could be some real interesting shots out there today." "You spent the whole week practicing hill shots. If you aren’t ready now, you’ll never be," he replied. Then it hit me. 1 was getting tense and my muscles were tightening. It was time to start my mental program and relax. I'm sure most of the archers at the World Championship were feeling the tension that I was experiencing. Why were we feeling that way? It was a combination of things that we allowed to happen. First, doubts about our up-coming performance became part of the thinking process. An archer or any other athlete cannot permit negative thinking to take place. You must fill your thought processes with positive thoughts concerning the shoot. Another option is to keep your mind occupied with another subject till it is shooting time. Then focus on good shooting form. Thinking about the awaited tournament raises your anxiety level and then your muscles begin to tighten. The telltale sign of this was when my buddy asked me why I was frowning. In order to frown, I had to tighten facial muscles. That was when I realized my shoulder and back muscles were tense also. There are many things that can cause an individual to reach this level of anxiety, but it mainly comes down to a misdirected train of thought. Let’s look at some of the more common pitfalls that can cause you to become tense. One of the most common problems is self-doubt or lack of confidence. This is why archers need to practice. Once you

have mastered the shooting skills on the practice field, you have proven these skills to yourself. Then you merely shoot the same shot as you do in practice. Another problem that causes a lot of concern is when an archer decides the distance to the target. Once you determine the yardage, believe in your decision. You cannot execute a perfect shot when you arc wondering if your distance estimate is correct. Make your decision, then

concentrate on the shot. Another common mistake is when an archers’ focus is on winning the tournament. The focus should be on shooting each shot with perfect form. As part of pre-tournament mental preparation, you might try visualizing yourself shooting all the different animal targets with perfect form. Make sure you visualize your arrow hitting in the middle of the ten-ring. This will reinforce your form and give you a positive picture of the tournament. Another obstacle for some archers is the score card. They arc too concerned about their score. Once the score is recorded on the card, forget that target and start preparing for the next shot. Rehashing the previous target cannot change the score. The target that you arc now preparing to shoot is the most important target on the course and should receive all of your attention. Learn to shoot a tournament for yourself. If you arc shooting it with the objective of beating your buddy or impressing your friends, you arc putting limitations on your performance. Your focus and thoughts will be misdirected. You owe it to yourself to shoot the best shot that you are capable of shooting. Focus on the objective. How many times have you heard someone say, “I wonder how ‘Joe’ is doing today? If I’m going to win, I know I have to beat him.” That isn’t the ease. The only person you have to beat is yourself. Stay relaxed and focused on your shooting. There isn’t anything you can do to change anyone’s score other than your own. Let's say you have avoided the common causes for tension, but you arc still very tense. The next step in relaxing is to regulate your respiration rate. Rapid breathing increases your pulse so you will need to slow it down. Now you need to relax the tight muscles. Take a deep breath and tighten all your muscles. As you slowly let the air out, relax the tightened muscles and concentrate on relaxing. Slowly take another deep breath. As you exhale, relax the muscles more. Do this a couple times. Each time you will feel the muscles in your body reach another level of calmness. At this point you should feel more relaxed. Once relaxed, it is important to keep your positive focus on the shot that is in front of you. Try to stay in “your own little Contiued on next page.

Focus on a shot with good form and then execute that shot. (Refer to article "Tournament Nerves”, May/Junc 1994 3-D Times) In order for this to become an effective part of your program, you have to do the same thing on the practice field. That is where you learn mental control. You practice it during tournaments. Once you have learned how to relax and stay relaxed, you have mastered one of the biggest challenges in archery.

NOTICE TO ALL ARCHERS In November 1999, Center Spot, Inc. received a letter accusing our shooting machine (The Hooter shooter) of infringing on a patent. Between November 1999 and February 2000, we received several telephone calls from the accuser stating that he had purchased the patent and that we were “infringing" upon his patent. Therefore, in February Center Spot filed a lawsuit in federal court asking the court to confirm that Center Spot did not infringe on the patent. Ontario Spring Classic June 10/ 11 / 2000 Crescent School Toronto, Ontario, Canada by Stewart Bowman This was the second annual Ontario Spring Classic tournament at the beautiful Crescent School in Toronto, Ontario , which is a private boys school at which the tournament organizer . Gary Gillies helps out by teaching archcry to the students. The school has a large grass field with a rubber paved running track behind the shooting line (a great place to stand while waiting) and is the ideal spot for a FITA tournament as it is surrounded by large trees and buildings and is in the heart ofdowntown Toronto, which is one of the largest and most scenic cities in Canada. The site is only fifteen minutes from the Toronto International Airport and about a three and a half hour drive from the Detroit Airport which is how I travel there. Toronto also has many tourist attractions such as Lake Ontario which is only 5 miles from where we shoot, and the CN Tower which is the highest building in the world and offers an elevator to the top, for a view that must be experienced. This tournament is well run in an area known for a great climate in June and has the added incentive of a substantial cash purse raised by Gary Gillies thni his company “General Vending “ and with some help from Lancaster Archcry and The Crescent School. with S750.00(cdn.) for first place in the 4 major classes. Men and Women’s Compound and Men and Women's Olympic in 2001 it will be S1000.00(cdn) for first place. On top of the cash Gary awards a hand made Stained Glass Canada Goose to the four winners as a lasting memento. These Geese arc approximately 20” long and 30" wide when hanging and arc a beautiful trophy. All classes pay three places and the registration fee is very reasonable and as an added bonus Gary arranges inexpensive accommodation for the archers at a nearby College (5 minutes walk) so a car is not a necessity. This tournament has quickly become a “Do Not Miss" tournament for those that tried it and I expect it will grow rapidly once the word gets out. I almost hate to write this article as 1 have been lucky enough to win this tournament twice and would like
to continue collecting a flock of Geese which will be tougher as the tournament grows .but I cannot keep this great shoot to myself! The tournament consists of a FITA round shot in on Saturday for positions in the elimination round on Sunday. The elimination round is a modified FITA Olympic Round Match Play with a double elimination. This system has been developed by Joan McDonald and the shoot crew and I like it. All archers (instead of just half the field) advance into match play, and when an archer loses a match they advance to a secondary pool. If they lose a second match they arc eliminated. The final two archers in the secondary pool will advance to the semi-finals with the opportunity to win the Gold, Silver or Bronze medal. This system gives every shooter a good chance and seems to bring the best shooters to the finals. To open the shoot on Saturday the Crescent School Head Master, Geoffrey Roberts, fired the opening arrow with the help of some of the Canadian Olympic Team members and after a short speech and introductions to the staff we started shooting. The Directorof Shooting was Vienneau Dos (CAN), and working as officials were our own Jane Johnston (USA), Rae Jones (Barbados) and Richard Chong-Kjt (CAN). In Attendance were 83 shooters, mostly Canadian with 8 from the USA and seven shooters and an official from Barbados, who were some of the "most fun to be around" archers 1 have met. The conditions were good with some wind but a comfortable climate as usual in that area in June. Once underway we got into the action and Joan maintained a leader board so we could see our positions and add some pressure to ourselves. In the Compound Men 1 was unable to get ahead of Matt Cleland (USA) who finished with a 1348 (USA) but gained some ground at 50 M. and was only 4 points behind with a 1344 when we were done, with Ed Wilson (CAN) only 3 points behind me with a 1341 in third. 1322, 5th was Sean McKenty (CAN)with a 1320 and in 6th was Owen Guenther (CAN) with 1317 and the next 10 places were all within 12 points so as you can see it was a very competitive group. In the Compound women it was Sally Wondcrle's 1362 (USA) ahead of Fiona McClean (CAN) with a 1339 and Ashley Kamuf ( USA) in third with a 1307. In 4th was Marthe Cusson (CAN) with a 1269, 5th was Dawn Smale (CAN) and in 6th it was Lyn Durward (CAN) with a 1253. As you can see Sally and Fiona were shooting extremely well as it was fairly windy. In the Olympic Men we saw a close battle with Jcannot Robitaille (CAN) leading with a 1271, with Dave Dalziel (CAN) in second with a 1269 (only 2 points behind) and Guy Gerig (USA) in third with a 1253, Shawn Riggs(CAN) in 4th at 1252, Hugh MacDonald (CAN) in 5th at 1248 and in sixth place Rob Rosnoth (CAN) with a 1246. In the Olympic Women in first place was Linda Tripney(Can) with a 1241 and in second Julie Welbum (CAN) with a 1219, Marlene Caron (CAN) with a 1188 , in 4th place Jacuie Saito (CAN) with a 1181 and in 5th Judy Magras (Barbados) with a 1164 and in 6th Diane Wicks (CAN) with a 1151. I wish 1 could mention all the scores but they were all competitive and I know we all had fun. After celebrating our finishes or creating some new excuses for our shooting we all went home to prepare for the elimination’s on Sunday. On Sunday the weather was clear and breezy and we got underway on lime (which docs not always happen at an elimination, round). As the round progressed there were some

surprises, such as Jeannot Robitaille who qualified first in Olympic men going out in the second round. Also Guy Gerig (3rd) was eliminated in the third round. In Olympic women, Julie Welbum (2nd) and Jacquie Saito (4th) were defeated early. In the Compound Men the biggest Surprise was Benny Parcntcau moving all the way to third after qualifying in 9th place. I am sure Matt Cleland was disappointed when I eliminated him in the finals but I warned him I am trying to collect a flock of geese! In the Compound Women Sally Wonderle dominated the elimination’s and Ashley Kamuf moved up ahead of Fiona McClean in the finals. One thing I should mention is that in the early afternoon when we still had 4 elimination rounds left a nasty cold front moved in and the temperature dropped approximately 20 degrees F. in about a fifteen minute period and then the skies opened up. 1 would guess we had an inch of rain in a forty-five minute period and I feel sorry for those who had to shoot their arrows while it was raining so hard you could barely make out the targets at 70 Meters was lucky and was not shooting at that time as it was the second pool on the line, but we all got wet and cold before stopping the shoot for a half hour until the storm blew over. This freak storm was unusual as I have been told it was the first rain on this specific weekend in 13 years, but I believe the FITA Gods control this stuff and we must have offended them again! Once it all cleared up we finished shooting and then dried our equipment as well as possible, and then moved into the school building for the awards. I will list the final results for the top 5 in each class and I strongly recommend that you put this on your list of “must Go” shoots for the future. Koreans arc waving theirflags as the women‘s team shoots in the finals
Few people can imagine the prestige and immense pressure of competing in the Olympics, I've heard it over and over from professional athletes ... it is the most humbling and pressure-packed competition in the world. The responsibility of representing their country is awesome. Simon Fairweather. AUS, almost gave up competition after a poor showing at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (52nd in a field of 64). But his new Coach Lee from Korea helped him modify his form, and Simon chose to make the attempt to represent his home country of Australia in the year 2000 - his 4th Olympic Games participation. Vic Wunderle. USA. took two years off from college to practice 10 hours a day for his premier apperance in the Olympics. Teammate, Butch Johnson, gave up his personal life to compete in three Olympics Games (Gold Medal Team in 1996). Rod White left his wife and new baby home to compete in his second Olympics (Gold Medal Team in 1996). USA's Janet Dykman has spent years of sacrifice for this drcam, her second Olympics. Denise Parker has grown up in front of the U.S. 36
since her first Olympic showing in 1988 at the age of fourteen. She also felt like quitting archery after her 1996 when she failed to make the Olympic Team. Karen Scavotto, at the age of 18. has spent hours of training with coaches, Tricia and Butch Johnson. The Korean archers live most of their lives with this goal once they have been identified as having a special skill in their field. Athletes throughout the world leave their families at young ages to fulfill their drcams of becoming an Olympic champion. This is only a very small sampling of the sacrifice that these athletes, the best in the world, make in order to take their place in history competing in the Olympics. The format of Archery in the Olympics spans seven days of competition. On the first day, the ranking round is shot for all competitors. The 64 women shot in the morning and the 64 men in the afternoon. This determines the pairings for the individual match play to follow. Days two through five consist of individual events. Women compete on day two, men compete on day three. After this competition, the
field is cut to 16 competitors each, men and women. Day four determines the individual women's champions. Day five is the day the men complete their individual competition. On days six and seven, team competition takes place. The sixth day of competition brings the top sixteen women's teams to the field to determine the championship team. Day seven belongs to the men's team championships. All arrows arc shot at a distance of 70 meters (approximately 77 yards). The “ends" of shooting consist of six arrows in the ranking round to three arrows in the elimination rounds. Women’s Individual Elimination Rounds The Koreans have once again dominated the Olympic Games. In an early development, the Korean women totally dominated the field. At the conclusion of the ranking round, Kim Soo-Nyung was in first place with 671, Kim Nam-Soon in 3rd with 662 and Yun Mi-Jin was in 4th with 661. The 1/2 Final Round found the three South Korean (KOR) women (Kim NamSoon, Yun Mi-Jin and Kim Soo-Nyung) and North Korea’s Choe Ok Sil competing for the top four places. Yun Mi-Jin, at the age of 17, narrowly defeated veteran Kim Soon-Nyung in a very close match, 107105. Kim Nam-Soon surpassed Choc 114 - 107. The Bronze Medal match was another close competition. After the first three arrows, Kim Soo-Nyung was up by one
point over Choe. The second end of three arrows brought Kim up to a 4-point lead over Choc, in the third end. Choc and Kim tied to remain 4 points apart. The final end was strongly shot by Choc with a 27 to total 101. Kim managed to hold on to a 2-point lead finishing with a 103. Korean teammates, Yun Mi-Jin and Kim Nam Soon, proved to be up to the challenge of the Gold Medal Match. The first end of three arrows had Yun up 28 to Kim’s 27. Scoring for the second end had them tied at 27, still a 1 point lead for Yun. The third end showed the pressure of this competition. Yun was shooting first. She raised her bow in the wind and shot her arrow. It scored a 7. This opened the door for Kim. If Kim shot an 8 they would be tied ... a 9 or 10 and Kim would have the lead with only three arrows remaining for the gold medal. Kim took aim but was distracted. She let down. With the clock running, she drew again and released the arrow. She also shot a 7. The score was 80 for Yun and 79 for Kim. To open the final three arrows. Kim shot a 9 which was answered by Yun's 10. Kim shot another 9, Yun shot a 9 - still a 1 point lead for Yun. Kim shot a 9. The pressure was on Yun. She needed a 9 or better for the win. With a look of concentration, Yun raised the bow and shot her final arrow ... a 9. Yun was the 2000 Gold Medal winner and Kim Nam Soon became the Silver Medalist. A clean sweep of the Women's Individual medals for Korea. Men’s Individual Elimination Rounds The men’s ranking round had similar results to the women. In the first three places were Korean teammates Jang YongHo (665). Oh Kyo-Moon who was the 1996 Olympic Bronze Medaliast (660), and Kim Chung-Tac(655). USA’s 1996 Gold Medal Team Winner, Rod White, was in 4th place with 651. For the USA, Vic Wundcrlc held 7th place with 643 and 1996 Gold Team Winner, Butch Johnson, was in 31st place with 627. Long-time competitor, Stanislav Zabrodsky showed the world his continued dominance in archery by placing in 5th following the ranking round by shooting 649. 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist, Magnus Pctcrsson (SWE), placed 6th with 646. Australian favorite, Simon Fairweather, continued on with a 170-161 win over Juan Carlos Stevens (CUB). The 1/16 Elimination Round again saw the Koreans victorious. USA’s Butch Johnson had to shoot against Oh KyoMoon and was eliminated 160-166. Jang (KOR) was victorious over Hasan Orbay (169-160) and Kim Chung-Tac defeated Ilario Di Buo(ITA). 162-159. Fairweather had a strong 161 to eliminate Jocelyn De Grandis of France who scored 150. Simon Needham (GBR) and Ismcly Arias (CUB) had a tie at 164. Arias won the shoot-off 9 to 8 and progressed to the 1/8 Finals. Michele Frangilli (1TA) who finished in 6th place in the 1996 Olympics, defeated Scott Hunter-Russell (AUS) 164-154. USA’s Vic Wundcrlc pulled out a 1 -point victory over Magnus Petersson (SWE) by shooting a 10 on his last arrow, 108-107. The stage was set for the medal matches. The Bronze medal match saw Wietse van Alton and Magnus Petersson in a close battle on the first end. Wietse and Magnus both opened with 29 point on their first end of three arrows. On the second end, van Alten shot 10-10-9 for 29 and Petersson dropped to 26. The third end saw them tie again with 28 points, van Alton was in the lead 86-83. The final end saw van Alten shoot 10-9-9 for a grand total of 1 14.

Petersson sho 9-9-8 for a total of 109. Wietse van Alten won the 2000 Olympic Bronze Medal. For the Gold Medal match, Vic Wundcrlc (USA) shot first opening with an 8. Fairweather (AUS) shot a 9 on his first arrow. From that point on, Fairweather was in control of the match shooting an awesome six out of the twelve arrows in the 10-ring, five arrows in the 9-ring, and his final arrow in the 8-ring. Wunderle shot very well but fell short of Simon’s 113 by 7 points in the end with a 106 for the Silver medal. Simon’s previous best ranking in the Olympics was 16th.
Women’s Team Round The Korean Women’s Team set a new Olympic and World Tearn Record of 1994, ten points higher than the previous record of 1984 set in 1996 by... the Korean team.

To say the least, the Paralympics was one of the most exciting events I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. Being a judge at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was great and competing in two world championships was great. However. 1 can honestly say those accomplishments pale in comparison to being involved with these courageous and upbeat archers at the Paralympics. From the moment I set foot on the archery venue at Homebush. 1 could tell I was around an enthusiastic group of archers. All week long. the archers were positive and fun and enjoying archcry as well as enjoying life. Sure, they had minor disabilities and at times, major disabilities but they did not dwell over them nor did they
complain 1 found that the attitude of the Paralympian archer is about ‘what they can do’ and not about ‘what they cannot do’. One of the most courageous and creative archers is Lany Townes of the United States. He is not able to use his right arm to shoot archcry, instead, he uses his teeth to draw and shoot an arrow. Lany shoots from a motorized wheelchair and points it straight at the target. He is the only one who faces the target in that fashion as all the other archers turn 90 degrees to shoot. Larry places his bow between his thighs and loads his bow with his left hand. There is a nylon strap sewn just below the nocking point. Once loaded, he holds the grip with his left hand, grasps the strap with his teeth

and pushes the bow forward with his left arm. He takes steady aim and when ready, he relaxes his hold and the arrow is sped to the target. It is interesting to note that others have used this method but most of them use their back teeth to draw and hold whereas Larry uses his front teeth. His compound bow is rated at 55 pounds so tremendous teeth, jaw. and neck muscles arc required to overcome that extraordinary pull. Larry practices several hundred arrows a day and is as strong as a bull. Paralympic archery classifications Archery Standing (ARST or W3): Archers in the Standing Class have minor disabilities in the arms and/or the legs but show some degree of loss of muscle strength, coordination, and/

or joint mobility. They get around with or without the use of canes, walkers, etc. Some archers may spend time in a wheelchair for relief but they have enough strength to cither stand at the shooting line or sit on a stool to shoot. Archery Wheelchair 2 (ARW2) or W2: Archers with paralysis in the lower part of the body, including the legs but have enough strength and control in the upper body to function the same as an ablc-body archer. Both the W3 and W2 use the Olympic style bow the recurve bow. Archcry Wheelchair 1 (ARW1) or Wl: Archers with disabilities in the arms and legs. They arc athletes with limitations in range of movement, strength, and control of arms and poor or non-existing control of the trunk. The legs arc considered non-functional, due to amputations and/or similar limitations of movement, strength, and control. They compete in a wheelchair and straddle the shooting line. They may use a release and a compound but no scope or peep sight. They arc limited to a draw weight of 60-pounds. The venue The venue site was reminiscent of the Middle Ages of England with the many vaulted, pointed tents surrounding the area. Support tents lined the field for security, medical, restroom facilities, dining, media and for just resting The dining tents were complete with cooks onsite so instead of the food being catered, it was prepared daily. Special ramps were built for easy access to bathrooms and a nylon-linked mat allowed the archers easy access around the practice field and the archcry stadium The venue was absolutely beautiful under the warm sun and blue skies of Australia. The temperature allowed a jacket in the crisp, clear morning and shirtsleeves in the afternoon. Terry Reilly, the vcnue/competition manager and Jim Larven. the deputy competition manager did an outstanding job in preparing and staging the Paralympic archcry program. Qualification round The qualification round is the same as in the Olympics - shooting 72 arrows at 70 meters. They shoot six arrows per end (or set) and have four minutes to do so. The archers arc ranked and then matched up for the elimination rounds. There were 67 men and 29 women from 25 countries competing. Elimination round In the elimination rounds, archers are paired in head-to-head matches. The earlier elimination rounds consist of three ends of six arrows per end. The later elimination rounds consist of four ends of three arrows per end. Men's Qualification Round The USA contingent started their competition with the qualification round. All three of the USA team competed in the Wl division. Larry Townes placed second with a score of 617 behind Zdenek Sebck of the Czech Republic - Sebek shot a world record 643. Aaron Cross was eighth with a 575 and Sid Williams was tenth with 528. Men's Elimination Round In the opening round elimination match. Sid Williams shot well but did not advance. This was Sid’s third Paralympics and he has

represented the USA very well. Aaron Cross of the USA set a new World and Paralympic record with a fine 156 for the 18-arrow match. Aaron placed fourth in Atlanta. Larry Townes had an opening round bye. Quarterfinals Zdenek Sebck claimed a bit of revenge by beating Aaron Cross 109-91. Aaron had taken away one of Zdcnek’s records in the previous round. In the process, Sebek claimed a new Paralympic record in the 12-arrow match with a 109. Larry Townes defeated Koichi Minami of Japan 96-93 and was the first person from the USA to do so. Minami collected Bronze in Atlanta and Gold in Barcelona and Seoul. Minami has minimal dexterity of his shooting hand and has to have an assistant load the arrow. Once the arrow is loaded, he draws the bow into position and with only a twitch of his hand. the release is triggered. Minami is a talented engineer who designed his own release - an excellent example of creativity and tenacity. Absolutely incredible what these people can do with their limited resources. Semi-finals Larry lost his match to Oliver Hatcm of France 97-90. Ironically, both of the archers who ousted the USA men. met in the finals for Gold and Silver. Larry then went to the bronze medal match and lost to Dejan Miladinovic from France. 102-4. Larry placed fourth place in his very first Paralympics but in my books, all these guys arc pure GOLD!

Finals In the W2 division. Young-Joo Jung of Korea beat teammate Ouk-Soo Lee to advance 99-92. Ouk-Soo Lee was the defending Gold medalist from Atlanta. Hong-Gu Lee. also from Korea, then beat Young-Loo Jung for the Gold medal 113-103. In a previous round. Hong-Gu smashed the existing record of 161 by shooting incredible 170 points. That score would do well in the Olympic Games. Never Give Up The words “give up” or “quit” are not in these archers vocabulary. Case in point is Reiner Schneider of Germany who has won two world championships. This is his fourth and final try at a Paralympic Gold medal. In Seoul Korea, he broke his leg. In Barcelona, his father crashed the car and had to return home leaving his son to a different helper. In Atlanta, they changed the qualifying rules. Schneider did not make it out of the quarterfinals, but feels his archery career was worthwhile, even without a GOLD medal. Ladies* Division In the women’s division, Paola Fantato set the tone by breaking the world record in the qualification round with a score of 593. easily outscoring the previous record of 551. Paola won 101-96 over Kathy Smith of Great Britain in the finals to claim the gold medal. Paola was a member of the Italian Paralympic team in Atlanta and a member of their Olympic team as well. In Atlanta, she was ranked #1 in the Paralympics but a clicker error in the semi-finals relegated her to the bronze medal match in which she won. Paola was only the second person to compete in the Olympics in a wheelchair. Truly incredible! Kathy Smith was in the standing division in Atlanta but no longer has the stability so her category changed and in the new category, she claimed her first Paralympic medal. There is no “quit" to these people I The very first person to compete in the Olympics in a wheelchair is another archer. Neroli Fairhall from New Zealand. She came in a respectable 35“ place at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984, just before her 40* birthday. She won a GOLD medal al the 44

Silver HI Medal winner Olivier Hatem (France) Paralympics in 1980 in Moscow and after a 16ycar hiatus, she is back competing in Australia Although she didn't fair too well, she is proud to represent New Zealand and the Paralympic archers. One of the most exciting rounds was the semi-final match of Malgorzata Olejnik of Poland and Masako Yonezawa of Japan. They were tied at 86 points each and had to shoot a tiebreaker. A tiebreaker is when each archer shoots one arrow, high value wins. In the first one-arrow shootoff, they both shot a 7. A second-arrow tiebreaker resulted in another tic with 7’s. On the third-arrow tiebreaker, Olejnik
Team Round Italians sweep team rounds! A team consists of three members of a country. regardless of their classification. In the qualification round, the Italian ladies set a new team world record with a score of 1659 - the previous record was 1578 They have won the gold medal in the past three international competitions and arc the defending Paralympic champions from Atlanta. They went on to defeat the Great Britain team, 199 to 198. The Italian men's team claimed they were inspired by what the ladies accomplished and responded by winning their first team gold

Gold Medal winner W2 Paola Fantato (Italy) medal at a Paralympic games The Korean men's team was the perennial favorites by virtue of being the defending champions from Atlanta and Barcelona but would have to settle for Bronze in Sydney. The USA team was not expected to do well for the simple fact that all three archers are in the Wl class, which was defined earlier. In the individual competition, each archer is allowed an average of 40 seconds per arrow. In the team competition, each team is allowed three minutes for all three archers to shoot three arrows each • one archer at a time. That is an average of only 20 seconds to shoot an arrow. Even for ablc-body archers. 20 seconds allows no time to be wasted. Watching the USA in the team round will make you hold your breath because it only takes one fumble to drop an arrow on the ground while the clock continues to tick away. During one particular end, Larry Townes had 45 seconds to shoot his three arrows. Try to imagine lifting the bow off your lap. placing it between your thighs, pulling an arrow out of your quiver, loading the arrow on the bow, grasping the strap with your teeth, pushing the bow out with your one good arm. aiming and releasing. Then repeal that process - all three arrows in 45 seconds! Sid Williams shot a perfect 30 during one of those ends and not only brought the crowd to its feet but sparked the USA to win its opening round match against Spain. In the quarterfinals. France eliminated the USA by only a couple points but the USA received another thundering ovation from the enthusiastic and appreciative fans. Although the USA placed sixth, their coach - Glen Harris, and assistant - Kelley Cowan, were very proud of their team. Glen. Kelley and all the other support people should be commended for their commitment in helping the physically challenged to excel.
