You were stupid to think that moving in with a hot girl was ever going to result in her sleeping with you. But a spot of creative thinking may bring unexpected reward. It would be stupid to try and sleep with your flatmate but if you end up sleeping with their friend then that really isn’t your problem.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

You will continue to feel the unmistakable tingling of a post O-Week romance. Maybe you met at the jungle party, or stood next to that special someone in a 50th anniversary shirt. It may well be love. However if the tingling continues through Wednesday you may need a shot of penicillin.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Unless you are a chemistry major that is attempting to go “Breaking Bad” this week you will face some tough financial realities. It is important to remember that adversity builds character. It is more important to remember that you can pay one in three pizza delivery people in weed to save money.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Two weeks into your new academic year and it is obvious that you will find fortune and success in all your endeavours. You are driven, determined and have managed to avoid distraction. NB This horoscope does not apply to philosophy majors: you are doomed to failure but at least you will always know why.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

HOROSCOPES

When your parents ask you about all the Bar101 photos you were tagged in all last week respond “It is a melancholy truth that even great men have their poor relations.” – Dickens. Then simply hang up the phone. Education is awesome when you can throw it back in your dad’s face.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

You may meet someone wearing a tee shirt from last week’s O-Week. Do not talk to that person they clearly don’t understand the rules. Civilised society works on very few rules but one of the key ones is that it is only acceptable to wear the 2014 O-week shirt again in 2015 and beyond.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

I’ve asked Nexus to help me out. I met you at the Paint Party last week and felt like we had a connection. We talked for a while and I promised to text you but I lost my phone that night. I know your name is Sarah, you’re living in College Hall and a Virgo. Please email Nexus with your number - Dan.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

In times of real stress in your life ask yourself simply, what would Jesus do in my situation? The answer is always the same: he would be freaked out by cars, wonder why no one here speaks Hebrew and have a few glasses of “water.” Feel better?

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

Ask about that awesome party that DebSoc had last week. You know the one with the drinking and the strippers and the Shortland Street stars. DebSoc people are the best people to hang out with. This horoscope has been purchased by the Debating Society who are actively seeking new members.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Do something each day that scares you. Unless that involves asking the lecturer questions in an agri-business 101 lecture. I would rather get in the car with a samurai sword wielding junkie. If you can talk about both agriculture and business at the same time you possess an unnatural witchcraft that should not be interrupted.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

The secret to living a happy life is to freely and unconditionally love those in your life without expectation. The secret to living a wealthy life is to not buy food on Campus. The secret to leading a successful life is believing the bullshit you read in a horoscope.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Allowing ourselves even a kernel of truth in this world, an exasperated moment of real expression and growth is the best we can hope for. Unless you own an Xbox One. If you own an Xbox one then Hell’s Pizza, Titanfall and a box of Corona is the best thing you can hope for.

"SEALIFE IS FOR HOW TO MAKE PUSSIES ANYWAY" FRIENDS AND - COLIN BARNETT THEN WEED OUT THE WEIRDOS. Give a Shit Tee-Ship Alix Abroad Alix Higby

As I sit here on the sand, the sweet breeze of summer blowing through my majestic leg hair and the bronze heaven that is Lion Brown passing my lips, I can’t but help but contemplate my place in the world. And that bring me to the plight of Western Australia’s sharks. Because... doesn’t everyone think about sharks while drinking? The Western Australian State Government’s ‘Capture and Kill’ policy was implemented this year. Widely referred to as the “shark cull”, this is a system by which 72 drum lines are used to bait and hook large sharks off the coast of Western Australia, particularly around popular beaches and surf spots such as the famous Margaret River break. The sharks are then shot and dragged out to sea in what the Government considers an ‘extremely humane’ killing. The policy of murdering sharks in their natural habitat has garnered some disapproval with people gathering in their thousands to protest. However, opposition from Australia’s RSPCA and even such high profile names as billionaire philanthropist and founder of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson, has done little to quell the government’s efforts. But why exactly are they taking such damaging and drastic actions against a predator doing what predators do in their own backyard? The cull is being implemented due to fatal attacks on seven individuals in the waters off Western Australia between 2010 and 2013. Seven. In 2013 alone a whopping two people were killed in fatal shark attacks in Australia. Just out of interest I decided to do a little comparison on the deadly actions of other Australians last year. The amount of fatalities caused by car crashes between December 2012 and December 2013 was 1,197 with 162 of these deaths occurring on Western Australia’s shark- hating roads. 162! But you don’t hear our old mate Premier Colin Barnett or Fisheries Minister Tony Buswell advocating shooting their stupid cars in the head now do you? I must make 100% clear that I am by no means belittling the tragedy of the deaths of Australian citizens in any way, shape or form. All I’m saying is that if you chose to enter the territory of any apex predator you do so with a certain amount of respect for the fact that you may or may not have your weak little human face ripped the fuck off… Also a few less Australians in the world might not be such a bad thing…. oi jokes oi

So I was sitting in the dining hall on my own one Wednesday morning, and was approached by a man. I suppose you could call him a man. Or a boy. A man-boy. It was a late breakfast, this was week two and I couldn’t smooth out my sleeping pattern to allow me to wake up before 9 with more than 4 hours sleep. I had snuck down to grab a quick waffle before six hours straight of lectures, and was filling my cup with my third shot of espresso when, “Excuse me, do you know where the cutlery is?” This weedy but confident looking guy was asking me where the cutlery was. Yessss. Not an absolute outsider. I pointed him in the right direction and hit the button for a fourth shot. He didn’t move. He asked if I was sitting with anyone and when I said no he told me he was new, and I should sit with him. I was new too, so it felt rude to turn away a fellow freshie. Turns out maybe I should have. I picked up my plate of waffles and my death by caffeine and joined him at his table. Skip past the pleasantries of where I’m from and what I study blah blah blah, and in the space of five minutes he’s telling me his entire backstory. His ENTIRE backstory. Including, but not exclusive to, how he’s published a book and climbs mountains and sky dives and worked in an impoverished medical centre and wrestles with bears (Maybe not that last one.) I thought this had to be some kind of a joke, but no, he was deadly serious. I’m not sure why he had to tell me his life in so deep and efficient an explanation, but he also handed me a business card (cos he’s an author, right) and asked for my number. At this point I feel really awkward cos he’s done all the talking and I haven’t exactly got around to the part where I have a boyfriend, and is that awkward to mention it now? What if he is just being friendly? I gave him my number. But then he did that really not cool thing where he’s like “I’m going to call you later. You better pick up. Hahaha. But seriously though.” Aaaaaand that’s when I decided to pocket his business card for the scrapbook of hilarious memories I will never make, and never answer my phone again. He rang half a dozen times and added me on Facebook, and I halfheartedly tried to make plans to meet up, but I was overwhelmed by his intensity. I also Googled his book and decided I just couldn’t take him seriously. But it was nice to know that meeting new people just kind of happens if you let it. Making friends isn’t that hard. It’s the graceful dodging of people who are “not meant for you” that is difficult.

WHY DON'T KIWIS LIE TO THEIR MOTHERS MORE?

CHAFING HAZARD AHEAD Road to Fitness Lauren Heginbotham

The Foreign Invasion Melody Wilkinson

Fitness101: Wear suitable attire to all fitness classes involving a bike, 16 years later and the cultural differences between me and my husband are still an issue. Recently we had a surprise visit from my in-laws, who loathe my very existence because… I don’t know, it’s something to do with the food I eat (my obvious disdain for fish and chips) and cook (too much chocolate in the chocolate chip cookies), the way I have an opinion (even though I am a woman and clearly, because of my accent, unintelligent) and the fact that I don’t always use a knife when eating things like salad. These things stack up to make me the worst choice of partner for their glorious specimen of a son. Maybe they’re afraid that being American is contagious and if I kiss my husband, or worse, sleep with him (in case they are reading this- it only happened one time in order to conceive their precious grandchild) he might catch it. I must admit it’s a valid fear because after we were married, we lived in the States for a while; during which time, my husband became best friends with my Dad and inexplicably fell in love with driving a pickup we nicknamed Tonka. He even started asking for snake skin cowboy boots for every birthday. (I didn’t buy them… I did buy him tickets to a Bob Dylan concert so he could see Bob’s snake skin cowboy boots, because while I appreciated his commitment, some people just shouldn’t wear cowboy boots.) Anyway, it goes without saying that, being married and all, we should be on the same team when in-laws invade our house. But as I was explaining to the mother-in-law that I was working on two novels, my husband breezes through the room and announces that I am no good at writing novels, that they just aren’t my ‘thing’. He swore later he was comparing it to my screenwriting ability which he thinks is “amazing” but his mother just got all the confirmation that my time at Uni, mooching off her son, has indeed been a waste, as she has suspected all along. I tried to explain later (through the sobbing) that in my culture when speaking of your wife to the mother-in-law you should just LIE. Just say she’s amazing at everything. I hate it here today.

especially when you’re expected to sit on one for an hour. To say I was unprepared for my first class at UniRec is an understatement. However, I’m philosophical about the likelihood of many more future mishaps as I ponder, then tackle my 2014 fitness challenge. Board shorts. They may seem like they belong to the noughties, but if I’m truthful, I bought this pair last year when I was dreaming up my foray into paddle-boarding (trending at the time). Where could the harm be in dusting them off for my first session at UniRec? You’ll be feeling my pain right about now if you’ve made the same mistake. Although they may feel lightweight and comfortable when out in the water, I can confirm there is no place for them in a REV class. Having had my gym gear sitting in my car most of the week, on Monday it was time to get the show on the road and step through to my new happy (endorphin inducing) place. I knew two things that needed to happen; try out something new and be in a group environment where I would resist the urge to walk out after doing the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day. Why REV? Well… Cycling is a growing sport in NZ. Look at the athletes we produce who then go on to represent NZ on the world stage. They certainly give ‘thunder thighs’ a very different, impressive connotation. Yes, I’m thinking of track sprinter Simon ‘Rhino’ van Velthooven, bronze medallist at the World Champs last week. I’ll be checking him out later this week at the new Avantidrome for the BikeNZ Track Nationals. Call it ‘cycling inspiration’. So, did I survive? In a word, yes, all 59.37 minutes of it. Besides the discomfort brought on by non- standard attire and failing miserably when it came to getting out of the seat for the hill climbs (it’s tough), I hung in there till the end and for a first timer, that’s an achievement in itself. I caught up with REV instructor Tanya after class who passed on some encouraging advice and sowed the seed for setting a goal to work towards. REV Instructor Tanya reckons “your backside needs to get used to the bike” so coming along to a REV class twice a week is the minimum. After 6 weeks I’ll be able to test out the outdoors. Apparently I’ll be able to survive 1.5 hours (gasp) in undulating terrain. That actually makes me kind of excited.

CHICKEN AND LEEK PIE Cooking for Students Zac Lyon

Alrighty, some of you have moved into the big wide world of flatting, where you now have to fend for yourselves, pay rent, bills, work job(s), do your own laundry and cook. In other words, putting your big boy/girl pants on and acting semi-grown up (hugely overrated). So while you monkeys wonder how you are going to pay the rent for the week or finish the growing mountain of Uni work I’ll help on the cooking front. This week it’s a nice and simple pie. Everybody likes pie.

Ingredients 2 large chicken boobs (cubed) 1 Tbs butter 1 large leek (or two medium leeks) sliced 1 cm rings 3 celery stalks finely sliced 3 carrots finely diced handful of fresh thyme 1-2 cloves garlic diced 2 Tbs Cornflour 285 ml milk 1 wineglass of either white wine or water 1 chicken stock cube Puff pastry Salt and Pepper to season

Directions 01_  In a hot pan on high heat, throw in the cubed chicken boob and cook until lightly browned and not pink. 02_  Remove chicken from pan. Add butter, let melt and add in chopped veges, along with garlic and thyme. Cook until veges soften slightly. 03_  Mix cornflour with a bit of the milk to get the flour lumps out and add with rest of milk into veges in the pan. Crumble over stock cube and add winesies or water. Let the whole mixture thicken and season. 04_  Add in chicken and coat with creamy vege mixture. 05_  Prepare a large pie dish with a greasing of butter, lay out bottom pastry. Empty chicken filling into the pie dish and cap the pie with more pastry and roll in pie edges. 06_  Brush the pastry with milk, cook for 30-40 mins at 180C or until golden. 07_  Allow it to cool slightly, it will be pretty warm- burn your mouth and throat as you swallow warm!

Again, if you manage to not follow my instructions or they make no sense, head over to my youtube channel, Cooking4Students and watch the video. Peace.

The bolded groups of squares are called “cages.” In the

upper-left corner of each cage, there is a “target number” and a math operation. Fill in each square of a cage with a number between 1-9. The numbers in a cage must combine—in any order, using only that cage’s math operation—to form that cage’s target number. You may not repeat a number in any row or column but you can repeat a number within a cage. Example: Your target number is 5, your operation is addition, you’re using the numbers 1–9, and the cage is made up of two squares. You could fill in 2 and 3 (because 2 + 3 = 5) or 1 and 4 (1 + 4 = 5)
