DEAR READER, We are delighted to present you with the first edition of this year’s IN!SIDE Truck magazine. After a very successful 2021, the war in Ukraine is impacting on the supply chain and, as a result, general costs for transport companies are increasing dramatically. This is why it is very important to provide the best support and services to the HD aftermarket industry - not only by supplying parts and components, but to also create concrete services and concepts. Meanwhile, the industry is evolving and has to adapt to the major challenges of the future (EV, new mobilities, lack of skills & training; and of course, sustainability). As sustainability is on everyone’s lips, the whole aftermarket community is working towards a common industry vision and roadmap (creation of green parts and services, sharing best practices, etc.) and to ultimately make firm commitments. These issues will be on the agenda of Climate Day, taking place on September 12th, during the opening day of Automechanika Frankfurt. We are, of course, already implementing changes on buses used in public transportation – the electric buses of today could become powered by green hydrogen tomorrow. This transition falls under our responsibility. Keep SCR Systems Running AdBlue Urea Filters

SCR systems (Selective Catalytic Reduction) in modern vehicles are operated with a solution of 32.5% synthetic urea and 67.5% demineralized water, known under the brand name of AdBlue®. AdBlue® is dispensed from the tank via the metering unit as required based on driving condition and injected into the exhaust tract upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. The reaction of urea with the hot exhaust gases in an SCR catalytic converter, converts toxic nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. AdBlue Urea filters ensure that no contaminants enter the metering unit to guarantee long component service lives. The mesh and change intervals are comparable to those of a diesel fuel filter. If the filter is clogged or the SCR system no longer functions due to neglected maintenance or damaged components, the engine control unit will switch to an emergency program. Engine speed and power will be reduced depending on vehicle type. If the fault in the system is not rectified, the drive to the closest garage will happen at walking speed in the worst case. URVI LAUNCHES PADEAM, THE FIRST SENIOR MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AIMED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE AFTERMARKET During Motortec Madrid 2022, Urvi, a distributor of specialized spare parts for commercial vehicles (and an IDAP member), presented PADEAM, a Unique, Exclusive and Specific Senior Management Program for the Automotive Aftermarket. NEXUSTRUCK LITHUANIA TRAINING PROGRAMS What an Incredibly dramatic year the start of 2022 was - starting with the members event for NexusTruck Lithuania concerning training programs for local sales and workshop specialists.

An incredibly high demand exists for professional workers focused on commercial transport maintenance services. Therefore, lectures were delivered by several vocational training colleges; and delegates were involved in a brainstorming session focusing on the development of a training program for the freight transport mechanics of the future. Another key event that took place was the uplifting internal company ‘Annual Awards’ presentations. SPEEDING TOWARDS NORMAL TIMES AFTER THE COVID PANDEMIC For Finnish company Tavo Ltd, the start of the pandemic, like for so many companies, was very concerning. However, this seller of spare parts and accessories for heavy equipment, weathered the storm and pulled through well. Tavo’s Purchasing Manager Juha Korpinen says that the demand for spare parts has largely ridden the effects of the pandemic. “COVID-19 influenced the availability of goods all over the world and, of course, our business experienced it also,” he added. Summer 2022 marks a return to meeting customers at the fair as well. In early May, Tavo participated in the three-day Maxpo Trade Fair, which is one of the largest events in the offroad machinery industry staged in Finland. TAVO Oy is a Finnish company importing, wholesaling and retailing spare parts for heavy equipment. Operations began in Tampere in 1976 and today there are five locations throughout Finland.

A truck battery must not only Minimum be capable of deep discharge, size: it must also withstand a large number of charging cycles. The charging cycle is the term for discharge and recharging of the battery. Batteries with many charging cycles reduce operating costs and increase service life. The more often a truck battery can be discharged and then recharged, the more overnight stays are possible in the vehicle. With the right battery technology, a large cyclic depth of discharge can be achieved to supply the large number of electrical consumers during break times. Charge acceptance – a critical factor for regular batteries

“AGM technology allows the batteries to deliver more energy, while at the same time absorbing more charge – meaning this battery will be fully charged within a few hours.” says Thorsten Werle, Engineering Design Lead Heavy Duty at Clarios EMEA, referring to another feature of the battery, the charge acceptance. This is the ability of a battery to accept and store energy considering factors like temperature, state of charge, charging voltage or battery history. A half-discharged AGM battery can be recharged to 90% in only one hour and is fully charged after less than 3 hours of driving. In comparison, a conventional battery needs 2.5 hours to reach the 90% and more than 5 hours for a full charge.

Comprehensive ZF range for commercial vehicle clutch service ZF offers solutions for shaping the future of the commercial vehicle sector that ensure greater efficiency, safety, connectivity, and intelligence. For many years now, the Group has been known as the number one supplier of driveline and transmission systems. The ZF Aftermarket range therefore includes all spare parts for clutch and transmission repair. And the range goes far beyond the commercial vehicle brands with ZF transmissions. The TraXon automatic commercial vehicle transmission with 12 or 16 gears is the most widely used system in young vehicle heavy trucks on the European market. In addition to major brands in the truck sector, many bus manufacturers also use this transmission system. In series production since 2014 as the successor to the AS-Tronic model, vehicles with this type of transmission are increasingly appearing in independent truck workshops. Although automatic actuation significantly reduces clutch wear compared with earlier manual truck transmissions, the friction clutch of the TraXon is still a wearing part. The service life depends to a large extent on the usage profile: In long-distance traffic, a mileage of up to one million

kilometers is possible in view of the comparatively few starting and shifting operations. Conversely, in heavy construction site traffic a change may be necessary after just 250,000 kilometers. A significant difference compared to the predecessor model, AS-Tronic, is in the clutch actuation. The TraXon transmission is always equipped with ConAct®, a concentric pneumatic release cylinder that has replaced conventional clutch actuation by release lever. The system automatically determines the optimum release position; the vehicle electronics gently regulate the actuation. This eliminates the risk of clutch overload by the driver. But ZF Aftermarket not only offers spare parts for its own transmissions. Rather, ZF is also the most important supplier of clutches for those truck manufacturers that produce their own transmissions. Even for models that were equipped with a clutch from another supplier as original equipment, aftermarket components of OE quality can be found in the ZF program. At ZF Aftermarket, OE technical innovations find their way into the independent aftermarket particularly quickly. No later than two years after the start of production, these are available as spare parts for all independent operations.

TECHNICAL ARTICLE A look inside Monroe Magnum shocks Why has Monroe Magnum technology gained such widespread popularity among commercial vehicle fleet professionals and technicians? Here’s a quick overview of a few of the “inside” advantages of these units. Blow-off rebound valve technology Monroe Magnum axle shocks include blow-off rebound valve technology that helps provide better control and stability through higher forces at low piston speeds, thereby minimizing body roll. At the same time, the blow-off valve maintains these forces at comfortable levels at high piston speeds. This technology helps provide a safer ride due to the fact that these “extra” efforts both minimize cabin roll and increase handling and road holding of the truck. The hydraulic lockout feature Many Monroe Magnum shocks also include a “hydraulic lockout” feature. Here’s why this matters: on commercial vehicles with air suspensions, the shock absorber helps limit suspension travel, including over-extension of the air spring, which can cause expensive damage. The hydraulic lockout consists of a patented secondary piston positioned above the valving piston. This design helps transfer mechanical force through the entire diameter of the piston rod, but its primary function is to reduce the velocity at full extension. So, as the lockout piston travels into the extended rod guide, increased hydraulic pressure reduces rod velocity and minimizes metal-to-metal contact at full extension. High-quality oil seal A high-quality oil seal is absolutely vital to shock durability. Failure of the seal can allow hydraulic oil and/or gas to leak from the unit. A bad seal can also permit dirt, grit and other contaminants to enter the shock. This elastic element should be designed to withstand strong friction forces and high temperatures. Monroe Magnum shock absorbers feature an advanced Viton double-lip high-temperature-resistant oil seal designed to minimize leakage and help extend operating life under even the most demanding working conditions. In fact, this seal allows Magnum shocks to maintain excellent performance in temperatures up to 200º C. Protective paint coating Even the shock’s outer “skin” – its protective paint coating – can be an important differentiator. Keep in mind that shocks are often subjected to brutal conditions, including exposure to road salt and other corrosives. Monroe Magnum shocks are painted using a high-quality electrostatic process that attracts paint molecules to all metallic surfaces, ensuring outstanding coverage, consistency and protection. Once the shock housings are correctly coated with paint, they receive a thermal treatment for added hardening. Every shock is different Just as all shocks are not the same, commercial vehicles can vary widely in terms of operating demands. Fuel filtration for the D15, D20, D26 and D38 engines from MAN. For its customer MAN Truck & Bus, Hengst used the Blue.maxx modular system for diesel filtration as the basis for development of a custom solution: the Fuel Service Center (FSC). The FSC is a five-stage filtration system with lifetime water separation, in which the single stages are optimally integrated in a pre-filter and main filter. The fuel filter system meets the requirements of Common Rail technology and is able to remove finest dirt particles and also water from the fuel. With the respective sensor system (partially optional) and various valve functions, the fuel circuit is monitored and, if required, the flame start system is supplied and the separated water automatically discharged from the collection tank. The special feature of this custom application is the mixing valve. At cold temperatures (during winter operation) warm diesel fuel from the return flow of the common rail system is mixed with cold diesel from the fuel tank. This prevents blockage of the filter insert by paraffin crystals. The system also ensures reliable operation during the transition period from summer to winter. This makes it possible to eliminate the electric heater in the pre-filter for normal use. The FSC will first be installed in MAN’s new D15, D20, D26, and D38 engine series.

APRA,Remanufacturing is the highest form of recycling APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association) is the only global association that has been representing the interests of automotive remanufacturing companies since 1941. APRA’s Europe Middle East Africa division (EMEA) is well-known as APRA Europe and is based in Brussels, Belgium. The association has approximately 600 members worldwide and are primarily vehicle manufacturers, tier 1 suppliers and independent remanufacturers, as well as core brokers. They represent approximately two-thirds of all employees in the European automotive remanufacturing industry. APRA Europe promotes remanufacturing as an integral part of the circular economy and represents the interests of the industry which includes free trade, an independent aftermarket and legal certainty. Remanufacturing is the highest form of recycling and should therefore be actively promoted by politicians, law giving institutions and companies. Members benefit from the organization’s close integration with other industry associations, receiving guidance and support for business matters. APRA Europe also holds its own conferences and other events to bring together supply and demand – for the benefit of each. In 2021, APRA merged with FIRM, the European umbrella organization representing the interests of engine remanufacturers and rebuilders. There are currently 10 national trade associations that are members of FIRM comprising more than 1000 engine remanufacturers and rebuilders. APRA is the Voice of Remanufacturing since 1941.

Remanufacturing as best practice of the Circular Economy For service and maintenance of motor vehicles, the automotive industry has to provide the relevant spare parts to the aftermarket. These service parts have to be available for decades after the original parts were developed and produced. The market demands, even for older vehicles, quality spare parts at a reasonable price.

Often, this is only possible with a remanufactured product. When purchasing a remanufactured spare part, the customer has the right to return the defective used part (which is called a Core) out of his vehicle. The reverse logistics process, back to the supplier, is normally supported by financial incentives to ensure the availability of used parts for remanufacturing. Cores are the raw material for the next remanufacturing cycle. Within the European Community, about 10% of the technical spare parts in the automotive aftermarket are remanufactured.

Motor vehicles are progressively getting more complex utilizing specific production processes and a higher diversity of materials. Many of these specific production processes will not be available in future decades to come. For example, today the life cycle of semiconductors is less than the production life of a vehicle. We can expect that in the future the production costs of new spare parts will dramatically increase. This will become even more important, when in the process towards HV electrical vehicles production lines for legacy technology, will no longer be available. Without remanufacturing, obtaining spare parts for a reasonable price will not be achievable. Relatively new cars could be scrapped when maintenance costs become unaffordable to the customer. A remanufactured part fulfills a function which is at least equivalent to that of an original part. It is restored from an existing part (Core), using standardized industrial processes, in line with specific technical specifications. A remanufactured part is given the same warranty as a new part; and it clearly identifies the part as a remanufactured one and states the name of the remanufacturer.

Remanufactured products are supported by the politicians within Europe because it has manifold positive impacts in the following fields: • • • •

Environment: Reducing potential CO2 emissions by 400 kt (only EU 27+1). Saving natural resources: Up to 85% of raw material and using only 55% of the energy compared to that of producing a new unit. Safety: Remanufactured products fulfill the equivalent function and are warranted as the “original product”. Employment: 32,000 jobs are offered (only EU 27+1). A remanufactured product is the best choice for the end user by offering great quality at a reasonable price compared with a new unit.

Reduce fuel costs with the oil change package Thanks to LIQUI MOLY, fleet operators can reduce their running costs

The current fuel prices are putting a big dent in the cost calculation of many fleet operators. There is little that can be done about the prices themselves. But the fuel consumption of the vehicles can be reduced quite a bit. Every kilometer traveled, every hour the engine runs, then saves money. How? This is done with the oil change package from LIQUI MOLY. The package consists of four parts. Firstly, the additive Pro-Line Engine Flush, which is added to the oil just before the oil change to remove deposits and sludge from the system. Secondly, the right motor oil. Often, the motor oil is seen as a mere cost factor and therefore low-priced, high-viscosity oils such as 10W-40 or 15W-40 are used. This may have been approved by the vehicle manufacturer, but here it is a waste of potential savings. A savings potential that is all the greater the more expensive the fuel becomes. A lower-viscosity oil is thinner, so the engine needs less power to pump it. “This won’t cut fuel consumption in half, of course, but it will reduce it by a few percent,” explains Patrick Frei, who looks after the commercial vehicles sector in exports at the German oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY. “The more often the engine runs, the more money is saved.”

Thirdly, Pro-Line Engine Wear Protection follows. The wear protection additive is added to the motor oil. It contains tiny particles of MoS₂, which act as a solid lubricant to reduce direct metal-to-metal contact. This not only reduces fuel consumption even more, but also increases the service life and reduces the risk of breakdowns and engine problems. Fourthly, the Pro-Line Diesel System Cleaner K is added to the fuel. The additive dissolves combustion residues and encrustations on the injectors, so that the diesel is finely atomized again. This restores the original fuel economy. With this four-part package, consumption costs can be reduced by several percent, so that the expenditure for it is quickly amortized. LIQUI MOLY also offers fleet operators individual oil advice. “We analyze the vehicle fleet together with the operators, so that they need as few different oils as possible for their fleet,” says Patrick Frei. “This simplifies procurement and reduces the risk of costly mix-ups.” “With this oil change package and our advisory services, consumption costs can be reduced, while money can also be saved for repairs because defects are avoided,” says Patrick Frei. “It’s a two-pronged way to be kind to your budget – and the environment at the same time through reduced emissions.”

The Knorr-Bremse aftermarket portfolio includes remanufactured products under the EconX® brand, offering them as replacement parts for older commercial vehicles. In 2021, EconX products not only saved 1.85 million kilograms of CO2 in Europe, but also 7.5 million kilowatt hours of energy and a good 640,000 kilograms of material. DINEX: RECONDITIONED DPF EXCHANGE FILTERS PROVIDE SUBSTANTIAL SUSTAINABILITY BENEFITS Buy a recon filter and see an 89 pct. lower carbon footprint compared to a new filter, new calculations from Dinex reveal. Dinex, the exhaust and emission leader, has clear green credentials when it comes to reducing exhaust gas emissions and helping to create a cleaner air environment. The Danish company also provides substantial benefits in the field of sustainability. New calculations from Dinex show that a DPF filter achieves an 89 pct. lower carbon footprint when buying a recon filter compared to a new filter. The calculation shows a burden of 293,5 kg CO2e for a new filter, compared to only 31,3 kg for a recon filter (per unit). This calculation takes into account ceramic raw materials, stainless steel, sintering fuels, electricity, transportation, recon energy consumption etc. The reason for the big difference among others is the high consumption of energy in production with precious metals. It’s a much simpler process, when it comes to the production of recon filters. The recon circulation of filters includes an average 3 cleaning processes and thereby 4 lives of a DPF filter.

EUROPART TAKES A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY

At the beginning of 2022, EUROPART - Europe’s leading commercial vehicle parts dealer and provider of workshop supplies - launched the “Sustainable Transformation” project. The company, which coordinates sustainability activities across Europe, sees this as a vital step towards meeting the future challenges facing the sector. Solar power can only be one of many building blocks: true sustainability must go much further, according to Olaf Giesen, CEO of EUROPART. He has a clear vision of what the business needs going forward and, with more than 1700 employees across 27 countries, wants to transform the company into a sustainability pioneer within the industry, by initiating a benchmark for sustainable, social and economic action.

“True sustainability starts with high-quality, durable and innovative products,” emphasises Ralf Stepputatis, Director Category Management. Strict quality controls - especially for the products of the EUROPART Premium Parts own brand - have always contributed to EUROPART’s success. Recently, however, remanufactured parts have also found their way into the range for price-conscious and sustainable acting customers. “Remanufacturing - the reprocessing of still usable components for the spare parts market - conserves natural resources, reduces CO2 pollution during production; and is thus undoubtedly an important component of a sensible sustainability strategy,” says Stepputatis.

When it comes to sustainability, EUROPART does not limit itself to the company itself, but includes the entire supply and value chain, all the way to disposal. Whether it is a sustainability certificate for waste disposal in the central warehouse in Werl, its own recycling circuit for vehicle batteries, or the selection of particularly sustainable suppliers, such as the manufacturer of own-brand oils (which have been produced in a climate-neutral manner since 2020) – EUROPART sets a good example in all areas. This often requires a change in thinking and a great openness for new, innovative and particularly sustainable products. With its strategic orientation and the clear communication of its goals and values, EUROPART creates the willingness in management and at all employee levels to broaden horizons and explore uncharted territory. On the one hand, this applies to the company’s own use of renewable energies. Since 2021, the headquarters in Hagen and 90 percent of all 33 German branches, have been obtaining 100 percent of their electricity from renewable sources. In addition, charging stations are being installed and the company’s own vehicle fleet is being gradually converted to electric cars. On the other hand, this also affects the product portfolio and the range of sustainable products for customers. module systems of the Scandinavian manufacturer Green Energy. These modules are ideally suited for mounting on vehicle roofs and supplying electric power to trucks, mobile workshops or other mobile facilities. The first promising projects with customers have already started and show that there is a great demand for these types of innovative, sustainable products on the market. However, climate-friendly products and measures are by no means enough for EUROPART. “Our sustainability goals are based on three fields of action which, with their different focus topics, form the framework for our corporate actions,” explains Giesen. In addition to climate protection (Environmental), these also include responsible corporate management (Governance) and social action (Social) with regard to the company’s own employees, as well as society. As early as 2023, the company will install a central decision-making body with members from various central divisions and functions of the company. It will initiate a wide range of sustainability measures on behalf of the management, coordinate them throughout the company and monitor their implementation. “We have already achieved a lot in terms of sustainability,” says Olaf Giesen, who added “but the greater part of the journey still lies ahead of us. It’s good to know that our employees are very committed and passionate about supporting our sustainability strategy and are actively shaping the transformation of our company with all their expertise and many good ideas.” The top-class jury of one of the most important company awards also recognised how successful this approach is. For the second time in a row, EUROPART this year received the TOP 100 seal for outstanding innovative strength in trade.

Climate change is one of the biggest dangers facing mankind and requires urgent action. According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, commercial vehicle traffic was responsible for around 38 percent of CO2 emissions from EU-wide road traffic in 2019. In view of the CO2 fleet emission targets introduced by the EU in 2019, the commercial vehicle sector must also contribute to the climate and energy goals of the Union and reduce its CO2 emissions. This is where synthetic fuels can play a role. Synthetic fuels can be produced sustainably from biomass – for example straw – or organic waste such as used vegetable oil. Electrofuels or e-fuels are synthetic fuels produced using renewable electricity from water and carbon dioxide, for example. Synthetic fuels allow greenhouse gas-neutral operation of conventional gasoline and diesel engines. The premium MANN-FILTER brand of the global filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL already offers various fuel filters for commercial vehicles that are compatible with synthetic fuels. Dr. Björn Schmid, Director of Material Development at MANN+HUMMEL, explains: „Synthetic fuels can be aggressive to some types of elastomer seals and can leach plasticizers from the fuel filter sealing ring. As a result, a seal can lose up to ten percent of its volume. In the worst case, this can even cause fuel to flow out and the filter to come loose while driving.“ The seal materials in MANN-FILTER fuel filters for synthetic fuels according to DIN EN 15940 have been tested, are ideally suited for the application, and have the relevant OE approvals. They ensure a permanent hold and a complete seal of the filter. MANN+HUMMEL has already started series production of these highly efficient fuel filters for various

commercial vehicle manufacturers. In the independent automotive aftermarket, for example, the MANN-FILTER WK 11 052 is available in original equipment quality for Volvo and Renault trucks. This is just one of the MANN-FILTER fuel filters for synthetic fuels, and the range is being consistently expanded. „The mobility of the future will certainly consist of a mix of different drive technologies, and liquid fuels will be required for a long time, such as in the area of long-distance heavy goods traffic. Here, synthetic fuels can make an additional contribution to effective climate protection in transport,“ says Schmid. Building success together In close cooperation with industry and trade, TecAlliance improves the quality of catalogue data Correct, comprehensive and up-todate catalogue data is crucial for success in the independent automotive aftermarket. The Lion Truck Racing marked the return of the NEXUSTRUCK colors for 2022 thanks to Anthony Janiec,pilot of the Lion Truck 66. Pascoli, a member of NEXUS Italy,also supporting the race,attended the event and took the opportunity to meet some of the suppliers and workshops partners. A superb 5th place was achieved in the qualifying Misano race practice run. The team’s excellent progress this year – following technical developments in the ‘off-season’ – were clearly demonstrated with a 6th and 8th place in the race.

Unfortunately, luck was not with Antonio Albacète, who missed his start just ahead of Anthony Janiec in race 1 and wiped out all his hopes of a good result. Then Norbert Kiss lost a lot of time due to a flat tire in race 4 - probably costing him 2 positions at the finish. These two unfortunate incidents resulted in the loss of several places in the championship. However, the truck is really fast as evidenced by achieving the 6th fastest lap in the last race. We are still in the top 10 and the team has once again done a great job and looks to the rest of the season with confidence.

Remote diagnostics Remote diagnostics plays a really differential role, since it gathers all information directly from the different on-board electronic control units and sensors in real time. This way, it makes it possible to deploy failure models that prevent failures, to collect all information related to present or non-present errors, when applicable, and even to carry out certain advanced functions. These include: error clearance remotely, the remote particulate filter regeneration, or the remote reset of units and counters - allowing the vehicle to continue on route, thus avoiding road assistance. This solution allows efficient maintenance, since it guarantees the correct operational state of the vehicles and reduces the fuel consumption excess due to poor maintenance states. Therefore, for example, an anti-pollution system in bad conditions can increase consumption by up to 7%, an air filter can increase it by up to 1.6%, etc.
