WELCOME FROM THE CEO

INSIDE EDITION 34 • DECEMBER 2023

Dear Esteemed NEXUS Friends, As we bid farewell to another remarkable year, we are thrilled to present this special edition of INSIDE Magazine.

What makes it special, you may ask? Well, N! was conceived in 2014 with a bold vision - to engage and thrive in emerging markets - and this ethos has been an integral part of our DNA from the very beginning. Within these pages, you’ll discover the latest initiatives, successes, and insightful reflections tailored specifically for the dynamic landscapes of Africa, APAC, Latin America, and beyond. Looking ahead, the anticipation is building as we eagerly await the upcoming 10th-anniversary celebration in Monaco. The Principality of Monaco, with its revered status as the automotive temple, hosts not only the iconic F1 Grand Prix, but also the prestigious Automotive Club—an event that promises to be a gathering of automotive enthusiasts and industry leaders. As we eagerly count down the months until we can meet in person, we encourage you to immerse yourself in the enriching content of INSIDE Magazine. Best Regards,

Gaël Escribe CEO of NEXUS Automotive International

Emerging Markets: In the Focus of the Corporate Strategy

For decades, the majority of European suppliers in the Independent Aftermarket (IAM) has been focusing on Europe and North America. The growth driven by increasing vehicle numbers in Western Europe and the huge backlog of development in Eastern Europe, has been sufficient to achieve double digit growth rates almost every year. Accordingly, investments into making replacement parts available in those developed countries and for the respective (European) car parc has been highly prioritized by the major IAM players. The bilstein group, a truly independent aftermarket player, has early chosen to focus on both, the developed and the emerging markets, but with different approaches: In the Northern hemisphere, the number of vehicles and purchasing power has been too attractive to neglect. Accordingly, major investments into European logistics centres such as Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal safeguard the availability of more than 70,000 different spare parts under the febi, SWAG, and Blue Print product brands.

In the emerging markets, the bilstein group has built partnerships with the leading regional wholesale distributors over decades. Real partnerships have been established through strong efforts for market adequate pricing, brand building and sales support, without lowering the product quality. On the contrary, the 3-year manufacturer guarantee introduced for all febi, SWAG, and Blue Print products distributed by the bilstein group worldwide, highly supported the common efforts in the emerging markets.

Always Close to the Customers In order to support the strategic partnerships, the bilstein group has established sales organizations with technical support in almost all Southern Hemisphere regions. After Sales Service (ASS), technical training for trade and workshops and close interaction with retail trade organizations are supporting the wholesale distributors and strengthen the brands united under the umbrella of the bilstein group. In addition to that, the local teams better understand the respective needs and guide the Category and Brand Development teams for market adequate range development. Very often, vehicle models are in operation in Asia, Africa and Latin America, before the leading catalogues even recognize those cars. Since its foundation, NEXUS’ international focus combined with the regional business development teams supported the bilstein group’s strategy in the emerging markets. The recently founded entity IAMaga, focused on the needs for business development in Africa is a good example. Common actions against counterfeit, harmonizing different technical standards (which are an obstacle for trading), elevating technical know-how in workshops, are just some of the reasons, why bilstein group has partnered with IAMaga from the start. Michael Steck Regional Sales Director for Middle East and Africa Latin America and India: Key Markets with Great Potential In recent years, the aftermarket business has significantly increased in several key markets. One example is the ASEAN region, where the bilstein group has optimized its sales structure in recent years.

By focusing on regional key customers, better positioning our supply chains within Asia and selectively building staff and structure in key future markets such as India, we have become an even stronger and more reliable partner. Suchirthan Ratnasingham Regional Sales Director for Asia Pacific A similar development can be observed in Latin America, where markets continue to prosper. With the increase of vehicles on the roads, the demand for aftermarket products and services has soared. The automotive aftermarket in various markets is thriving due to the growing vehicle ownership, aging vehicle fleet and e-commerce platforms. João Ramos

Regional Sales Director for Latin America But there are still challenges, such as competitors offering low quality products, which can undermine consumer trust and safety. Therefore, only with the right strategies and a focus on quality and customer satisfaction the aftermarket business can capitalize on the vast opportunities presented by the emerging markets. For the bilstein group, this task marks a key factor of the global strategy.

New PRO kit for popular compact SUVs Timing belt kit for easier fitting on the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Xceed From a night at the opera to driving in off-road terrain, a compact SUV cuts a fine figure almost anywhere. Their versatility, sporty looks and practicalitymaxing space have made them popular all over Europe. The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Xceed are two particularly notable representatives of this breed of car. Some 420,000 of them have been registered in Germany alone since 2016, meaning they will soon be coming into workshops for timing belt changes in large numbers. Everything the workshop professional requires As professional mechanics also need an oil pump belt for this job, and not just the timing belt for the camshaft, we have combined the two into a practical kit: the new CT1237K2PRO kit for turbocharged 1.6-litre CRDI engines. This ensures mechanics have everything instantly to hand, allowing components to be replaced even more easily, conveniently and reliably – and all to our customary standards of OE quality, of course.

New on the aftermarket TVD with overrunning function

As usual, further information and fitting instructions can be found in the Product Information Center (PIC). www.continental-ep.com/pic

An absolute first for the automotive aftermarket: torsional vibration dampers with overrunning function. With their integrated rubber track, torsional vibration dampers (TVD) are able to neutralize the crankshaft’s vibrations and rotational irregularities that act on the belt drive. This protects the entire belt drive system while also ensuring far smoother and more efficient running.

As usual, further information and fitting instructions can be found in the Product Information Center (PIC). www.continental-ep.com/pic

Photos: Continental, iStock, Hyundai, Kia

And now a genuinely ground-breaking offering for the automotive aftermarket goes one better: Our torsional vibration dampers with integral overrunning function decouple the belt drive from the crankshaft and isolate high torsional vibrations, paving the way for a low belt tension and reducing belt friction. This eases the strain on all components in the belt drive while also looking after the environment by lowering carbon emissions. Plus, they are fully manufactured to OE quality standards in Germany.

Practical, uncomplicated, adaptive

The AQUACTRL®2 wiper series from Continental wipes away chaos in the spare parts warehouse in no time at all Windshield wiper series with high market coverage and easy installation: workshops can choose between pre-assembled sets (Direct Fit) and a single wiper with an adapter system (Multi Clip). Furthermore, the AQUACTRL®2 windshield wipers impress with an innovative spoiler and, last but not least, with their modern, sleek look. Checking models and searching through the warehouse – the search for the right windshield wiper can cost workshops and their customers a lot of time. Continental’s AQUACTRL®2 series windshield wipers provide a remedy. They are easy to handle and have a slim design. But what makes them special are the two different solutions Continental offers: the DirectFit set consists of two pre-assembled wipers that can be fitted to the car particularly quickly. The single MultiClip wiper with adapter solution is suitable for an even wider range of car models – the MultiClip series covers 90 percent of the vehicle market in Europe. A small number of part numbers in relation to market coverage saves the workshop unnecessary stress. The wipers can be found quickly and are easy to order via the TecDoc online catalog system. High quality for a clear view The coupler ensures that the windshield remains clear and driving safe. It connects the wiper arm to the wiper blade via an adapter and is narrower and slightly longer in shape. This distributes the contact pressure on the windshield more favorably. The spoiler helps maximise windscreen contact, and a patented graphite-coated rubber ensures a longer life. The flat-beam wiper also brings out the best in wiping performance, ensuring that motorists maintain a clear view in all weathers. Incidentally, this also works in the new AQUACTRL®2 series on many vehicles where washer nozzles are built into the wiper arms. The multi-talented MultiClip The MultiClip series is a true universal solution: 90 percent market coverage with 21 part numbers. A selection of supplied adapters makes this possible. The adapters are a perfect fit, robust, and allow very easy, quick installation on any standard wiper arm without an intermediate plate. The individual packaging also contributes to the flexibility of the MultiClip wiper.

In the AQUACTRL®2 DirectFit series, an asymmetrically shaped spoiler ensures that the wiper blade maintains constant pressure on the windshield.

Whether on both sides or only on one side, whether driver or passenger side, the MultiClip fits. DirectFit – installed with a flick of the wrist Compared to the MultiClip series, the DirectFit series with two wipers and a total of 77 part numbers comes with the adapter already pre-assembled. This speeds up installation and makes it even more convenient: the DirectFit can be clicked into the wiper arm with just one flick of the wrist directly after unpacking. It is particularly suitable for replacement on newer vehicle models where the original equipment wipers are due for replacement. Here, the DirectFit series scores with its design: the adapters looks almost the same as their OE counterparts. Quickly find the right model: AQUACTRL®2 makes it easy for workshops The AQUACTRL®2 series thus helps workshops to work efficiently. Apart from the quick search, workshops also benefit from simplified ordering processes and reduced space requirements in the warehouse. A large QR code on the front of the packaging leads to all matching vehicle models, making it easier to quickly decide which items will work for the car in question. To ensure that nothing goes wrong during installation, the back of the packaging is imprinted with an easy-to-understand explanation. Continental offers a 24-month warranty on both the MultiClip and the DirectFit series.

The new AQUACTRL®2 windshield wipers from Continental are available as MultiClip single wipers with adapters for precise and flexible installation (front in the picture) or as convenient DirectFit set solution with pre-mounted adapters (rear).

SHAPING THE FUTURE WITH DELPHI IN TURKEY... At Delphi, we’re committed to investing in the future, and it begins with empowering the next generation. With Europe’s youngest population, Turkey represents a hub of potential innovators and industry leaders. Our ongoing technical schools project serves as a platform where young talents, particularly in the technical field, are nurtured. STRENGTHENING FOUNDATIONS IN ISTANBUL Our initial focus has been on two technical high schools in Istanbul — Borsa Istanbul Başakşehir and Borsa Istanbul Pendik. Our involvement transcended typical partnerships; we renovated classrooms and supplemented them with advanced learning materials, including real engine oil samples and diagnostic tools. At one school, students now have access to a lift, an impact wrench, and a full tool trolley, fostering an environment where theoretical knowledge meets practical application. Delphi Aftermarket Turkey, Caucasus, Middle East and Africa Regional Director Reşat Dumanoğlu said, “At Delphi, we highly value the education and investment in our future generations. We are committed to providing outstanding education and support to the future of the automotive industry. We have invested in the renovation of classrooms, and have donated diagnostic and technical tools as well as product samples. But it doesn’t stop there - “Delphi Aftermarket Class” is our promise to continue supporting young technicians through education and training projects going forward.”, Reşat Dumanoğlu added, “I believe that these students will shape the automotive industry and be the pride of the Turkish nation.” THE ‘MASTERS OF MOTION’ INITIATIVE Beyond the physical enhancements, we introduced the ‘Masters of Motion’ concept through Delphi seminars, offering in-depth insights into our diverse product range. This initiative ensures that students and educators have immediate access to a wealth of informational content and real-time support, bridging knowledge gaps efficiently.

...SUPPORTED BY MASTERS OF MOTION EXTENDING OUR REACH To date, we have reached 1,000 students in Istanbul. This achievement marks the beginning of a broader vision. Our expansion plans include bringing our unique educational approach to additional schools in İzmir and Ankara. Before the year ends, we’re excited to introduce this project to three more schools during 2023. These institutions include: • Ege University’s Ege Higher Vocational School Automotive Technology Department in İzmir • Bornova Mimar Sinan Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in İzmir • Bornova Vocational Training Center in İzmir TAILORED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES IN İZMIR Students at Ege University, Bornova Mimar Sinan Vocational School, and Bornova Vocational Training Center will soon experience our customised, product-specific training sessions. They will also get handson experience with our Hartridge bench (Sabre Expert), complemented by an exclusive tour of our İzmir manufacturing plant to witness the practical applications of their learning. FOSTERING A LEARNING ECOSYSTEM Our commitment extends to delivering product-specific trainings and ‘train the trainer’ sessions, ensuring a cyclical process of learning and teaching. This approach not only amplifies the depth of knowledge but also enhances adaptability, ensuring that educators and students alike are equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of technology and innovation with agility and expertise. AN INVITATION TO COLLABORATE Our actions are rooted in a comprehensive vision for the future — a future where young technicians are not only well-versed in current technologies but are also prepared to innovate and lead. We’re not on this journey alone; collaboration and partnership are integral to achieving a future where technology and skill harmoniously coexist. Every step forward is a stride towards a world led by skilled, informed, and innovative Masters of Motion.

BREAKING NEW

GROUND IN TURKEY

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Derya Kocaoglu, Nicolas Bailly, Selami Tülümen, Franck Jolly

BELGIAN LUBRICANTS MANUFACTURER CHAMPION LUBRICANTS HAS RECENTLY INTENSIFIED ITS EFFORTS IN THE TURKISH MARKET, RECOGNIZING ITS SIGNIFICANT GROWTH POTENTIAL. The company had entered the market with their exclusive distributor, Dinamik Otomotiv, to bring high-quality Champion products to customers throughout Turkey. This collaboration has demonstrated a harmonious synergy due to the shared values and objectives of the two companies. Selami Tülümen, Chairman of the Board at Dinamik Otomotiv, provided his perspective on the dynamic nature of this partnership and how Champion Lubricants adeptly tailors its approach to meet the distinctive demands of the Turkish market.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CHAMPION IN THE TURKISH MARKET?

The most important point here is that we, as partners, evaluate the broader context with sincerity and trust by compiling the information from the field.

IN TERMS OF COLLABORATION, HOW DO YOU SEE THE CHAMPION TEAM? SALES, MARKETING, TECHNICAL ETC?

Our first contact with Champion was in the last months of 2020 through Nexus. As a company, we were looking for a collaboration with a real, high-quality European oil brand with which we could compete with internationally famous brands in terms of quality, vision and presentation in our country.

We start by determining the product range that will be offered and highlighted in the market, guided by this data. We then continue to support our business plan with field actions, advertising and promotional campaigns.

We see a team with a professional approach, open-mindedness, belief in success and sincerity.

This contact and the combination of Julien Fahkreddine’s (Champion’s Sales Manager Middle East & Africa) persistent, consistent and reliable approach started our collaboration. From the beginning of our partnership until today, the success, honesty, quality-oriented approach and team spirit at Champion have always impressed us and become the cornerstone of our partnership.

HOW HAS CHAMPION ADAPTED ITS PRODUCTS OR SERVICES TO SUIT THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT AND MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS? As we know, each local market has its own demands and expectations. We have started and are continuing very productive collaboration with the Champion team taking this into account.

We are happy Champion, as a European brand, displays remarkable proactivity in tailoring their offerings to suit the Turkish market’s specific needs.

HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE CHAMPION’S ON-SITE VISIT IN YOUR PREMISES? The visit by the Champion team to our headquarters demonstrates their eagerness for close collaboration, a customer-focused approach that we value. This is the only path to establish a genuine connection and think creatively to boost our shared growth. The first time the team visited us, they stated that they were impressed by our distribution and logistics network and capacity, which consists of more than 1500 personnel and more than 500 vehicles and serves all of Turkey.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU VISITED CHAMPION FACTORY IN BELGIUM? Our visit in Belgium showed us how being uncompromising in quality, aesthetics and timing brings perfection. We really enjoyed the trip and met the bigger team behind this success.

WHAT SETS CHAMPION APART FROM OTHER COMPANIES OPERATING IN EMERGING MARKETS, PARTICULARLY IN TERMS OF FOSTERING LONG-TERM, MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL PARTNERSHIPS? What distinguishes Champion from others in this regard is its spirit and belief in understanding, supporting and guiding its business partners to success with trust, persistence and loyalty. They possess the ability to adjust their approach, services, and offerings according to the market’s distinct requirements. They maintain a strong collaborative relationship with their partners, regardless of their location. This level of agility and flexibility is what leads to success.

FACILITATES THE EMERGENCE OF AN AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET ECOSYSTEM MEETING INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

AFRICA STRIVES TO CONTROL FOREIGN TRADE IN THE SHADOW OF ITS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT When we talk about emerging markets, we refer amongst other things to the African continent - a group of developing countries which are working to establish economies that meet international standards. Their economic development is often referred to as emerging countries. But can we speak of the African continent as a homogeneous whole from both a social and economic point of view? If we consider the economic context, the different African markets don’t evolve at the same pace, or in the same way. They are, for the most part, dependent on political decisions which determine their economic orientations by having a direct impact on their economic development.

INSIDE EDITION 34 • DECEMBER 2023

Their main problems fall into two main categories: availability of the currency; and the control of the exchange rate of the local currency in relation to the Dollar and the Euro, which are the currencies most used in the foreign trade of these countries. Availability is linked to the level of exports from each country, which are the source of foreign exchange income and which are used to supply ‘inputs’ for industries; and to import equipment and consumer goods. The nature of the exported products is essentially linked to the existing natural resources in each of these countries. At the macroeconomic level, the arduous task of governments is to maintain the balance of trade and to control the level of debt which would result from an imbalance. They then use the levers of exchange rates and inflation to control these macroeconomic aggregates with a direct impact on the standard of living of citizens and the purchasing power of consumers. This also has a direct bearing on the operation and development of businesses and greatly influences each country’s ability to do business. In the context of trying to control the situation, some countries are resorting to introducing regulations to regulate or limit foreign currency spending through such mechanisms as these: • import quotas per importer (in value) • import authorizations • import quotas equivalent to export quotas on certain categories of product • incentive measures for the development of a local industry If we return to our spare parts distribution business model, companies operating in the automotive aftermarket hardly escape these constraints.

Operators, whether they are equipment manufacturers or importers/distributors, see not only their growth restricted but also their products subject to tough competition in terms of price compared to products originating mainly from China. It should be noted that the lack of mastery of the various technological developments introduced in recent years (EV, ADAS, etc.), due to the weakness of training, and the absence of workshop operating standards, restrict the development and growth of maintenance and repair activities. Within this context, Nexus fully plays its role as a growth accelerator by providing support services, training and solutions and concepts for the benefit of its distributor members and their workshop customers. By working at a local level in each country and abiding by their rules and regulations with regard to the implementation of levers and tools, this facilitates the emergence of an automotive aftermarket ecosystem meeting international standards. This is achieved by using adapted training programs (managed by N!Academy and the equipment manufacturers partners involved), and by developing N!Auto, N!Truck and N!Carrosserie garage networks, which are based on proven standards. Maybe at this stage, given that we are at the start of setting-up a process for this ecosystem, we will take the opportunity to start this in a context of respect and promotion of sustainability. ‘Does this mean that the Green Garage label has come at the right time?’ Nexus continues to act as a catalyst to stimulate and accelerate growth in the sector on behalf of our members because “we owe you more than business as usual!” 

EXPANDING THE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENT REPAIRERS

INSIDE EDITION 34 • DECEMBER 2023

BORGWARNER’S ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT DUALTRONIC CLUTCH IS NOW AVAILABLE TO THE AFTERMARKET Since BorgWarner developed the world’s first high-volume series production dual clutch module for automated manual transmissions, it has helped to deliver the fuel economy of a single clutch transmission, with gearshift quality to rival the best conventional automatic transmissions.

BorgWarner has now announced that its dual clutch modules will be made available direct to the aftermarket, expanding the business opportunities for independent repairers. The company’s global reach ensures that wherever in the world a vehicle requires a replacement DualTronic module, a BorgWarner authorized supplier can provide the original part to a local workshop. Dual Clutches are available for various transmission platforms for Audi, BMW, Porsche, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen. The dual clutch modules for the aftermarket are original spare parts, manufactured in the same facilities as the original equipment (OE) products, and identical in every respect. Originating from the same supplier base as the clutches for car manufacturer series production, and subject to the same rigorous quality control, the accuracy of fit is therefore guaranteed. For the workshop, this improves throughput by avoiding fitting de-

lays due to non-matching parts being supplied and, for the customer, it provides peace of mind that their vehicle has been restored to factory specification, with the associated expectation of reliability. A further advantage of fitting the original part is that any DualTronic specification updates and upgrades requested of BorgWarner by a vehicle manufacturer will be immediately reflected in the parts supplied to the aftermarket. The workshop and customer can always be confident that the newest design - incorporating the latest enhancements - is being fitted. Product background Within the automobile industry, there is a continuous effort to improve the efficiency of the powertrain. This not only makes a valuable contribution towards reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, but can also improve vehicle

SIDE dynamics and enhance the driving experience. Reducing energy losses during manual gearshifts is one solution, which can be achieved by automating the clutch operating and gear shifting processes that would normally be performed by the driver. In an automated manual transmission, sensors convey relevant information to an electronic control unit (ECU), which uses the data to calculate the optimal shift points. Electromechanical or hydraulic actuators then carry out the clutch and shift actions with minimal interruption of torque.

EXPANDING THE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENT REPAIRERS

How a dual clutch automated transmission works The internal layout of a typical dual clutch automated transmission resembles two manual gearboxes within a single casing, each requiring a clutch. One clutch serves a defined set of gears via a solid input shaft, whilst the other clutch serves the remaining gears via a second, concentric hollow input shaft. By using separate input shafts, two gears can be engaged simultaneously. Engine output is coupled via one clutch to one part of the gearbox, whilst the next gear is preselected in the other part of the gearbox. During a gearshift, one clutch opens and the other closes within milliseconds, allowing an imperceptible change of gear ratio under load, without interrupting torque or traction. Tunable performance, better fuel economy and high-quality shifting BorgWarner developed the world’s first high-volume series production dual clutch module for automated manual transmissions – the DualTronic Clutch System – and today produces almost one million units annually for both factory fitment and aftermarket replacement. Electronic control

of the clutches and gearshift means that launch and shift characteristics are tunable by managing the shift points and shift speed. This caters for different driving styles from relaxed to sporty, different weather/road conditions, or special situations such as towing a trailer. A DualTronic-equipped transmission delivers fuel economy that rivals single clutch automated gearboxes; it also provides shift quality matching that of the best conventional automatic transmissions, but in a package that is lighter and more compact, yet competitive on price. Design characteristics The DualTronic clutch plates are composed of high energy wet composite friction materials. Compared to a dry clutch system, durability and reliability are improved, and the higher slip energy capacity enables a smooth and rapid launch from rest, as well as superior hill-hold and creep performance. Over its lifetime, the wet clutch maintains more stable friction and damping characteristics with reduced fluctuation in operating temperatures.

The clutch package is of modular construction: by varying the number and size of the friction plates, it can be optimized for either a short axial dimension or minimal radial dimension according to the platform architecture. It can also be configured to handle engine torque of up to 1,500 Nm or input speed in excess of 9,000 rpm, to support the widest range of vehicle applications in the segment. Actuation can be achieved by oil feedthrough or concentric slave cylinder with thrust/ release bearing. Optimized efficiency with vigorous performance A BorgWarner DualTronic-equipped transmission offers the comfort and convenience of an automatic transmission, plus the enhanced dynamic response of a manual gearbox for extremely fast gearshifts with improved acceleration and no interruption of power delivery. DualTronic clutch technology also improves powertrain efficiency to support a reduction in CO2 emissions. 

SIDE CHINA MAKES THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET GO AROUND. DOES IT?

A KNOWLEDGE HUB FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET

According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), 85 million vehicles were produced worldwide in 2022, most of them in China accounting for 27 million units. By comparison, a total of 10.1 million units were produced in the USA, 3.7 million in Germany and 1.4 million in France. These impressive figures from the Far East prompted Carmunication to look at the Chinese market but also into the behavior of Chinese vehicle manufacturers (VM) in Europe through the lens of the aftermarket. Carmunication is a knowledge hub for the automotive aftermarket and supports its members including NEXUS - through market research and knowledge transfer. This support happened most recently in the context of a conference around the General Assembly in Toulouse. A brief excursion into Chinese industrial history The Chinese automotive history began in the period between 1950-1970, when the stateowned car manufacturers were founded. Probably the best-known representative of this group in Europe is SAIC. From 1980 onwards, political reforms made privatization and the establishment of private companies possible. The best-known representatives from this era in Europe are, for example, Geely and BYD. Since 2014, the third wave of automotive development has been ‘rolling-out’ in China, focusing on electric mobility with countless new manufacturers such as Nio, Aiways and Xpeng being examples of this.

INSIDE EDITION 34 • DECEMBER 2023

According to figures from the Chinese Manufacturers Association (CAAM), China now has - as of 2022 - the largest vehicle fleet in the world with 417 million vehicles. The share in new sales of BEVs has recently risen to over 25%. This Chinese transformation in the mobility market has seen exports to Europe become more visible. What to expect from Chinese VM influence in the aftermarket? In Toulouse a far-reaching insight into access and attitude of Chinese vehicle manufacturers to the aftermarket was provided by Lei Yang. As an expert in the automotive sector, she accompanies businesses from China and Europe as they enter each other’s markets. In a nutshell, the situation can be described as follows: the Chinese vehicle market is a growth market. This applies even more to the BEV segment with a current vehicle fleet of around 11 million units. According to Yang, Chinese manufacturers are therefore focusing primarily on the production and sale of new vehicles. The manufacturers refrain from setting up their own dealer or service networks relying primarily on direct sales models. In China, the aftermarket is therefore nowhere near as important as it is for established manufacturers in Europe. According to Yang, Chinese manufacturers stick to this attitude when entering the European market. Whilst distribution models are relatively flexible from direct sales to importers - aftermarket services are primarily dependent on local partners, which often come from the IAM. In Germany, for example, NIO partners with Global Automotive Service, Aiways with ATU, or Elaris with Euromaster. VM’s strategy: A risky opportunity for the IAM So far so good. At first glance, the market strategy of Chinese vehicle manufacturers basically seems

to offer room and opportunities for the independent aftermarket (IAM). However, Yang also points out the downsides of a strategy focused purely on the sale of new vehicles. From the aftermarket’s point of view, this relates in particular to difficulties in warehousing and the supply of spare parts. And then there is the market’s lack of confidence in the long-term commitment to the European market and in the long-term viability of Chinese manufacturers. This fear doesn’t appear to be entirely unfounded. According to Yang, sales figures in Europe, especially in the BEV segment, are sometimes below manufacturers’ expectations. This could cause manufacturers to withdraw from the market just as quickly as they entered it. In addition, individual manufacturers are increasingly experiencing financial problems - similar to what can be observed in the Chinese real estate industry. Currently, Aiways and Xpeng in particular are said to be under financial pressure. Florian Precigout elected to the Carmunication Board of Directors Clear rules for fair access to data and fair use of data - this is how the EU wants to pave the way for a prosperous European data economy. However, it is up to companies in Europe to make something out of it. Carmunication supports its members on this path. NEXUS Service Concepts Director Florian Precigout, newly elected to the board at the recent general assembly in Toulouse, explained: “Carmunication is now internationally known as a knowledge hub in the industry. This is increasingly reflected in our membership and organizational structure.” 

The tests were conducted in authorized independent laboratories using standardized industry tensile testing methodologies* on control arm samples. The tests were performed on control arms for popular applications, including Renault Megane II/Captur, Ford Fiesta VI, Volvo S40/Ford Focus II, Volkswagen Golf V&VI/Audi A3, and Ford Transit.

For drivers and automotive professionals prioritizing safety and durability, opting for MOOG steel control arms is a clear and logical choice. With up to 2x the strength of the aftermarket competitors, MOOG control arms stand as the ultimate selection for any driver seeking peak performance and optimal safety.

E

Although all materials possess a certain level of elasticity, they can only withstand a maximum load before experiencing permanent deformation, known as Yield Strength. If the load exceeds the Yield Strength, the control arm will not recover its initial form, leading to irreparable deformation. This can detrimentally impact wheel geometry and the car‘s safety, making it impossible to correctly align the wheel within the tolerances set by the manufacturer.

Robbie De Moor, Steering and Suspension Product Director EMEA, DRiV Motorparts.

O

Control arms are safety critical car components that must withstand extreme loads, particularly in demanding driving conditions. They encounter significant forces when the car is cornering, accelerating, and decelerating and especially when driving over bumps or through potholes. Control arms need to be able to handle these forces continuously and therefore the material from which they are made needs to be of exceptional strength and quality.

*Tensile testing is a destructive test process that provides information about the tensile strength, yield strength andductility of the material. It measures the force required to break the sample and the extent to which the specimen sample stretches or elongates to that breaking point. The static tensile tests were performed according to the M1 - WYT procedure “Tensile test” of 9th September 2021 in accordance with the PN-EN ISO 6892 – 1:2020-05/EN ISO 6892-1:2016 standard “Metallic materials – Tensile testing – Part 1: Method of test at room temperature.” The testswere carried out using a ZWICK universal testing machine with a maximum force of 250 kN – accredited methodology. Ran in SGS INTRON Laboratory, Sittard, Netherlands and Upper Silesian Institute of Technology, Gliwice, Poland.

DENSO AFTERMARKET PROVIDES A TASTE OF ITS HYBRID AND ELECTRIC VEHICLE PORTFOLIO Sales of new energy vehicles (NEV), whether full battery electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), mild hybrid (MHEV) or even hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV), are continuing to grow across Europe.

Underlining its continuing position as a major original equipment (OE) component supplier to vehicle manufacturers (VMs) globally, DENSO is also highlighting its commitment to the independent sector by demonstrating the diversity of its aftermarket offering.

Despite the fact that the AC systems in NEVs and those powered by a traditional combustion engine have the same function, there are also several distinctions in how they operate, not least of which is the compressor, a central component of both.

Whilst there are significant differences when it comes to their power units and drivetrain, there are still many similarities between NEVs and traditional petrol and diesel powered vehicles when it comes to their driving comfort and safety, for example.

DENSO’s high voltage aftermarket E-compressors are available for a number of Lexus and Toyota HEV applications. In addition, DENSO condensers are OE fitment with several VMs, whilst the aftermarket range caters for almost 140 applications. In addition to ensuring the peak performance of the AC system, premium quality cabin filters also safeguard the health and wellbeing of the vehicle’s occupants, and this is another category where DENSO has a comprehensive aftermarket offering, with application references for more than 730 models from multiple brands.

Both of these areas are DENSO OE specialisms, which is why it should come as no surprise that air conditioning (AC) products, including cabin filters, and wiper blades, form a large part of its NEV replacement parts offering.

The next generation Generation X Trailer intelligence Simple structure, highly intelligent With iTEBS® X Knorr-Bremse is introducing the most advanced generation of the intelligent, electronic trailer braking system. A simplified and standardized piping layout offers advantages in terms of installation and service. And the range of applications and functions has been further expanded and refined.

S E R V I C E M A D E S I M P L E R : iTEBS® X, the new generation of trailer EBS, comes with a removable connector plate.

In the human brain, it is primarily the networking of certain areas that determines an individual’s intelligence. In the case of trailers, that intelligence is found in the electronic braking system (TEBS) – which is why KnorrBremse calls its trailer EBS iTEBS® X, with the "i" standing for “intelligent”. Here too, the networking of individual components plays an important role in the overall performance of the braking system. But the more complex and varied the piping of a TEBS is, and the more components it requires, the more time-consuming it is to install and subsequently service.

T H E C H A S S I S S U S P E N S I O N M O D U L E is available in two versions with identical connection layout.

This is where the Knorr-Bremse experts stepped in. With the introduction of the iTEBS® X generation, which follows on from the G2.2 model, they have further refined the range of functions and simplified the networking of the individual braking system components, including the parking and maneuvering valve and air suspension. iTEBS® X combines the control unit, sensors and pneumatic brake control system, as well as braking functions such as ABS and load-dependent braking. This enables more precise control of the braking force and improved coordination between the tractor and trailer, reducing wear on the trailer brakes and therefore also cutting the overall operating costs.

Further optimizations include utilizing the widelyused HDSCS plug system which is freely available on the market. And in addition, iTEBS® X offers a modular connector concept, with functions that were previously controlled via a single connector now distributed across seven sockets. This gives the vehicle manufacturer even greater flexibility than before when it comes to selecting functionalities and assigning them precisely. A further fundamental design feature is the TEBS module’s detachable connector plate – the compressed air manifold with the connections for the pneumatic supply lines. When it comes to servicing, a technician now no longer has to disconnect all the connections individually, but only one single compressed air manifold in order to rectify a problem either on the fittings or the modulator.

Since not every vehicle needs all possible functions, Knorr-Bremse offers the iTEBS® X module in three versions with different levels of functional integration. This enables an attractive price-performance ratio without customers having to compromise with regard to the intelligence or application possibilities of the TEBS. This is because the basic range of functions of the three iTEBS® X variants remains identical, with the models differing, for example, in the number of electrical inputs and outputs. While the iTEBS®X PLUS and iTEBS® X LAC models offer even more connections, the iTEBS® X ECO version is the most suitable solution for the cost-sensitive volume market. Vehicle manufacturers thus stand to benefit from an optimum price-performance ratio for their specific application. iTEBS® X LAC (Lift Axle Control), on the other hand, has an integrated lift axle control and is therefore recommended for all trailers with at least one lift axle. In this case, only the air lines need to be routed to the lift axle, with no additional valve required. This also means that no additional installation space is required, and the chassis does not have to be drilled. The bridge between LAC and ECO is supplied by the iTEBS® X PLUS version, which offers, with the P28 connection, an additional controllable pneumatic connection, for example, for a lift axle valve or a steering axle lock. Knorr-Bremse has also combined the lifting and lowering valve with the parking and shunting valve (POS) into a parking and maneuvering valve (POM) in order to save installation space. As part of this, the overflow valve has been moved to the TEBS modulator - which also helps to simplify the piping system. In addition to the proven two-button design, an HMI (Human Machine Interface) version is now available, which offers a lever for manually raising and lowering the vehicle body.

T H E P A R K I N G A N D M A N E U V E R I N G V A L V E offers the familiar two-button operation and also an integrated raising and lowering function.

iTEBS® X can be installed on all common types of trailer and semi-trailer and used for all conceivable applications. Despite this, it comes with a uniform and highly streamlined piping layout. In the new TEBS generation, Knorr-Bremse has routed electrical and pneumatic lines between the individual TEBS modules and trailer components along the shortest possible route. This saves considerable time during assembly, and also reduces the number of system components and amount of piping.

Knorr-Bremse is now also offering the new Chassis Suspension Module (CSM) in two versions, either as a conventional, purely pneumatic basic version or as an electro-pneumatically controlled iLvl version that offers additional smart functions. The latter is recommended for trailers that have to offer more than two driving heights: for example tippers in road finishing applications. With the new generation iTEBS® X, Knorr-Bremse is thus once again demonstrating that networking is the basis of a TEBS's intelligence and functionality. At the same time, the simplification and harmonization of networking between the various TEBS components in no way compromises the system's functionalities.

SIDE NEW WAVE OF LAUNCHES FOR NTN EUROPE’S CVJ RANGE

ADDING +800 REFERENCES TO THE RANGE

A strategic development axis since its launch in 2017, NTN Europe’s CVJ range has been added to each year since then. The range is continuously evolving to meet the entire market’s needs in the coming years ahead. With this aim in mind, 400 new references were added in October to the existing 900. With an annual production level of many millions of units, NTN in Europe has the expertise to cover all related driveshaft requirements covering: performance, efficiency, vehicle dynamics, weight reduction, vibration, noise etc. NTN in Europe can draw on its knowledge and expertise to develop a higher level of quality for original equipment and replacement parts. Over the past 5 years, this global leading equipment manufacturer has truly invigorated this CVJ range, which is experiencing exponential growth. It has indeed quadrupled since 2017, with a significant acceleration over the last two years, adding +800 references to the range. It

INSIDE EDITION 34 • DECEMBER 2023

has thus grown from 360 references initially offered to 1,275 today. Available in stock, the 400 references launched in October are divided into 3 product families as follows: • 133 new full transmission references, including 5 covering Tesla’s Model X and Model S. Indeed, it’s essential for the equipment manufacturer to keep pace with the expansion of the electric vehicle fleet by offering anticipated aftermarket parts. • 127 new seal kits, with 9 strengthening the gearbox side offering launched in 2022. Overall, this expansion aims to address significant demand for LCVs (Light Commercial Vehicles). • 140 bellows kits, including 5 “twin” bellows kits - a first for the equipment manufacturer. Each kit includes bellows and components for the wheel (in board) and gearbox (out board) sides, providing a comprehensive solution for repairers, who tend to replace them in pairs whenever they work on the interior below.

The primary objective of this launch wave’s references is to strengthen NTN Europe’s presence among LCVs and further penetrate the European and Italian markets, which offer significant commercial opportunities for the equipment manufacturer. Indeed, LCVs represent a strategic focus as they face more constraints due to their usage and loads that they transport. Wear parts like CVJs are thus expected to be replaced more frequently than on a passenger car. Thanks to this expansion, NTN Europe now covers 37 additional LCV models from 11 different manufacturers. In response to market demand, the manufacturer is also expanding its range to include more PSA models with 83 new dedicated references, Ford models with 56 references, and Italian models including FIAT applications - with 47 references. NTN Europe is thereby tapping into the potential of the Italian market, and increasing its fleet coverage by +20 points, which should invigorate sales there. The European fleet isn’t being left behind either, with coverage also increasing by +14 points thanks to the 400 new references launched. 

» DIAGNOSIS ON DEMAND:

NEW FUNCTIONS FOR TESLA Innovative partial diagnosis and camera calibration For the innovative diagnostic solution Diagnose on Demand VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface), we now offer additional functions for selected Tesla models. With Diagnosis on Demand (DoD), we are addressing the point where independent workshops often reach their limits. After all, many multi-brand diagnostic devices are as expensive as they are incomplete. However, due to the growing proportion of electronics in vehicles, more and more components are connected to an ECU, so that parts have to be unlocked or married to the vehicle in order to function properly. When it comes to unlocking or teaching, more and more processes can only be handled via the manufacturer portals. Especially for workshops that repair many different vehicle brands, the procurement of OE diagnostic devices and the introduction of employees to the different manufacturer programmes is very costly. Furthermore, the multi-brand devices often reach their limits and the workshops have no other option than to transfer the vehicle to the respective manufacturer. This is not only time-consuming, but also associated with high costs. Our diagnostic solution, on the other hand, offers an efficient and time-saving alternative.

New functions for Tesla In order to continue to meet the requirements of the changing market, we have expanded our range of services to include functions for various Tesla models. We offer the possibility to read out the fault memory and view the documents. In addition, we can calibrate the front camera on the Model 3 and Y as well as on the newer S and X models if an autopilot camera is installed. Diagnostic support can still be provided to a limited extent. For technical reasons on the hardware, it is unfortunately not possible to install the software or unlock the HV components. Further functions for Tesla are currently being prepared and will follow soon.

KYB TAKES TO THE TEST TRACK

SCAN HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO

In a recent video series produced by KYB America, KYB takes to the test track, revealing the stark differences between new and worn shocks.

THE RESULTS

THE VEHICLES

Braking Test: To understand the impact shock absorbers have upon stopping distances, KYB conducted braking tests in both wet and dry conditions. When comparing worn shock absorbers with a low-cost competitor, KYB found that lowcost shock absorbers fared worse when it came to stopping safely in both conditions. In contrast, stopping distances were drastically improved when testing both KYB and its premium competitor in dry conditions. However, in wet conditions where traction was reduced, the vehicle equipped with KYB product stopped 6 foot shorter than the premium competitor – the width of an entire car.

To ensure fair testing, KYB enlisted a pair of independent, third party, professional test drivers from the tyre industry to drive two matching 2015 Chevrolet Equinoxes, each having driven over 150,000km. To guarantee consistent and reliable results, each vehicle was fitted with new brake pads, discs, and stabiliser links prior to testing, alongside a full four-wheel alignment. Before every individual test, each car was also fitted with four brand new tyres and a full tank of fuel was added. The only difference between the vehicles? The shock absorbers.

THE COMPETITORS Over the course of two days, KYB compared and tested four different manufacturers. These included: the OEM shock absorbers; a low-cost competitor; a premium competitor and KYB’s Excel-G range.

THE TEST

Designed to allow the test drivers to experience each of the products in real-life driving situations, the test included: Wet track: A sprinkler system evenly soaked the road to emulate wet driving conditions, so traction, handling and braking could be tested. Slalom: To evaluate control and body roll. Braking: Measuring stopping distances from 80-0kph in both wet and dry conditions. Real Roads: 11km loop on real roads to evaluate performance in the real world.

Using data gathered from electronic data acquisition equipment installed within both vehicles, results showed that KYB outperformed all alternatives; both in the real world and on the test track.

ABS Activity: ABS activity was also monitored to demonstrate the direct impact shock absorbers have on the performance of crash avoidance systems. The ABS system was activated multiple times when monitoring worn shock absorbers – every time this happens, the ABS releases the brakes, adding time and distance to the stopping process. KYB, by contrast, showed far less activation – allowing the car to stop quickly and smoothly. These tests clearly indicate the importance of replacing worn shock absorbers, as undermaintained vehicles and worn parts affect a crash avoidance systems ability to perform as originally intended. Road Test: Both drivers concluded that whilst driving, there was a noticeable difference between KYB shock absorbers and worn OEM shock absorbers. Admitting that they did not initially believe there would be discernible difference between the two, they concluded that difference between the two was “night and day” and that the KYB product makes the vehicle feel more “locked down”, “following the movements of the road” more effectively.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the automotive industry, emerging markets have become fertile ground for the remarkable growth of automobile spare parts. These regions, once considered peripheral players, have now become vital contributors to the global automotive supply chain. The surge in demand for spare parts in emerging markets is not only a reflection of the expanding middle class and increasing vehicle ownership but also highlights the dynamic shifts in consumer preferences and industry trends. In Misfat Group, with our Mecafilter brand, we are constantly working on our products to meet this trend and demand for quality products and specifically on the filtration area. Here are some explanations of this trend. The Expanding Middle Class and Rising Vehicle Ownership One of the primary drivers behind the growth of automobile spare parts in emerging markets is the rapid expansion of the middle class. As disposable incomes rise and urbanization accelerates, more people in these regions can afford to purchase and maintain vehicles. This burgeoning middle class has fueled a surge in vehicle ownership, leading to increased demand for spare parts, maintenance, and repair services. As a result, local and global spare parts manufacturers and suppliers are seizing the opportunity to tap into these expanding markets. Localization and Market Adaptation To cater to the specific needs of emerging markets, many automobile spare parts manufacturers are localizing their operations. They are tailoring their products to suit the environmental conditions, driving habits, and the preferences of consumers in these regions. For example, manufacturers are producing spare parts that are more robust and durable to withstand challenging road conditions, as well as adapting to local regulations and safety standards. Mecafilter is producing most of its products in Tunisia with high quality for every filter family, Air, Cabin, Oil and Fuel. E-commerce and Online Marketplaces The rise of e-commerce and online marketplaces has played a pivotal role in driving the growth of the automobile spare parts industry in emerging markets. These platforms provide consumers with convenient access to a wide range of spare parts, enabling them to compare prices, read reviews, and make informed decisions. In turn, this has spurred competition and encouraged innovation in the industry, benefiting consumers with a wider selection and competitive pricing. Mecafilter is aiming to be present on most of these platforms but respecting a correct policy towards all other distributors, we aim to propose a viable alternative with these platforms and making sur not to harm other distributors.

Innovation and Technological Advancements The automotive industry’s evolution has led to more sophisticated vehicles with advanced technologies, resulting in a greater demand for specialized spare parts. Emerging markets are no exception to this trend. As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and other technologically advanced automobiles grows, spare parts manufacturers have adapted to provide components compatible with these modern vehicles. This shift towards innovative and sustainable solutions aligns with global environmental concerns and reinforces the growth of spare parts in emerging markets. With Mecafilter you’ll find a wide range of cabin filters for EV and hybrid vehicles available in 3 versions, pollen, carbon and now anti-bacterial version that is our newest product proposing a better filtered air in the cabin of the car. Investment in Infrastructure and Distribution Networks Global and regional players are investing heavily in expanding their distribution networks to reach more remote areas in emerging markets. This effort to reduce lead times and ensure the availability of spare parts is crucial for meeting the demands of consumers in these regions. This not only supports the growth of the industry but also bolsters economic development and employment opportunities locally. The growth of the automobile spare parts industry in emerging markets is a testament to the evolving dynamics of the global automotive sector. As the middle class expands, and consumers in these regions continue to invest in vehicles, the demand for spare parts shows no signs of slowing down. The industry’s adaptation to local needs, the embrace of e-commerce, technological advancements, and investment in distribution networks are driving this remarkable growth. With these trends set to continue, the future looks promising for the automobile spare parts market in emerging markets, contributing to their economic development and technological progress. Misfat group’s aim is to continue to be present for the aftermarket business with great investments and continuing to propose to the consumers premium quality products and a very attractive and reasonable price all over the world and specially for the emerging markets.
