The aftermarket has not been used to type approvals, so there is still a lot of education for the industry – an education we still want to take part in. Furthermore the green image is a strong part of our DNA – in the end our goal is less pollution and cleaner air for everyone.
On the type approval listing Dinex have just over 50 parts approved with 55% of those DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filter), and the rest split pretty evenly between DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalysts) and SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction).
Non approved spareparts on the independent aftermarket can cause increase engine loads, higher fuel consumption and damaging downstream components.
Dinex has been in ongoing dialogue with authorities all over Europe, when it comes to regulations, fines and illegal products. But in spite of the work and big costs concerning type approval and other producers on the aftermarket not having these approvals, Dinex don’t regret the comprehensive approval-work. It’s illegal to sell these products without approvals, and both owners of the vehicles with illegal emission parts and the drivers risk large fines all over Europe. Besides the stress test of the

EVS MARKET, WHAT IS HOLDING IT BACK?
ALEXANDER GRUZDEV CEO, Gruzdev-Analyze IS THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES MARKET STUCK IN THE SLOW LANE? In an exclusive interview for IN!SIDE, Alexander Gruzdev, CEO of the international market intelligence company Gruzdev-Analyze, discusses the development of the electric vehicle market, and suggests why, for the next few years, its growth could be stuck in the slow lane. Alexander’s company is based in California, one of the United States’ most ‘electrified’ states.
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
The EV car parc will inevitably get bigger as the trend towards sustainability and greener living, partly driven by legislation, gathers momentum. However, your research shows there could be some bumps along the road? Yes, one obvious key factor is the cost of batteries. Since 2010 the cost of a battery for an EV has decreased by nearly ten times. However, you cannot overlook the fact that lithium, which is used for the battery, is significantly increasing in price. In addition, its reserves in the world are limited; lithium is available in only a few countries. And, this material is in demand not only to produce automotive batteries but also for the production of batteries widely used in a variety of industries. According to Bloomberg estimates, lithium has risen in price by 446% over the past year. And according to analysts, this year the demand for this material will increase by 40%, and the cost growth will continue. The increase in raw material prices cannot be effectively compensated by reducing battery production costs. Therefore, in general, this factor negatively affects the dynamics of sales of electric vehicles. EVs cost more than ‘ordinary’ cars, but there are incentives to switch. Will these be enough? Currently, the cost of electric vehicles exceeds the cost of ‘ordinary’ cars, so governments need to act. As the experience of some European countries shows, the sales of such cars directly depend on the effectiveness of implementing programs aimed at stimulating demand for electric vehicles. Thanks to such programs, the buyer can get an electric car at a more attractive price than a car with a conventional internal combustion engine.
However, considering the increase in the cost of lithium and other raw materials, it can be predicted that, in the future, automakers will not be able to hold down the prices for EVs. Therefore, electric cars will become more expensive. This will require expanding governmental programs aimed at ‘sponsoring’ such sales. Remember that earlier, many governments announced their intention to completely abandon ‘conventional’ cars by the end of this decade and switch to electric vehicles. However, there are concerns that even before this deadline - and in European countries, this should happen in 2025-2027 - the industry will face a significant shortage of lithium. As a result, a situation may arise that stated goals for the transition to eco-friendly transport will not be possible. How is the infrastructure of charging stations developing? What is the position in the USA? This issue was relevant at the global level 3-5 years ago. Currently, the development of charging station infrastructure is no longer a major problem. In large cities where many electric vehicles are concentrated, many office parking lots and shopping malls have charging points. In the USA, the infrastructure issue is also not acute since most of the population lives in private homes, where they can charge their electric car. However, even if the infrastructure issue is mainly solved, the problem with electricity generation is still acute. For example, in the summer in California, where electric cars are widespread, there are frequent power outages during the period when people actively use air conditioners.

Steps are already being taken here to switch some houses to using alternative energy sources: for example, the Government subsidizes the installation of solar panels to households.
total sales volume, increasing gradually. Therefore, the bulk of vehicles in which the after-sales service sector is engaged in traditional cars with internal combustion engines. For the next five years, at least aftermarket won't be much affected by electric veBut it is worth admitting that this does not help to hicles; however, it is the right time to prepare. solve the problem completely. And the increased demand for electricity already requires an increase in its production. Is there anything else that might impede the growth of the EV car parc? All this leads us to the second factor that can start to slow down the development of the electric car market — the increase in the cost of ownership. We are already used to the fact that an electric car is more profitable in terms of cost of ownership than an ICE car. But it is worth recognizing that the wear of some essential components of an electric vehicle, such as pads and tires, occurs more intensively, which means it requires more frequent replacement and increases maintenance costs. For the moment, the difference in ownership cost is just about 10-15% and continues to decrease. In such conditions, it will be possible to ensure the necessary growth rates of sales of electric vehicles only under pressure from the governments, like making EVs the only legal cars. An alternative possibility is that countries will postpone the transition to electric transport or expand the vehicles allowed for use due to hybrids or plug-in hybrids. So how will these factors affect the field of aftersales service of electric vehicles? It is evident that even though sales of electric cars are growing, they still occupy an insignificant share in the INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022

The Coolant Control Hub:
The revolution for thermal management in electric vehicles HELLA has implemented an advanced valve concept based on its high level of system expertise in the areas of fluidics, engines, electronics and software, as well as its interfaces with the cooling- and refrigerant system and its many years of know-how in high-performance electric pumps and actuators. The innovative 7-way valve, for which a patent is already pending, makes it possible to achieve ideal heat recovery and thus increase efficiency. In short, this helps distribute heating or cooling demand for the vehicle’s critical components as needed, resulting in improved thermal performance.
The electrification of the automobile is progressing steadily. However, there are still many challenges to tackle along the way. On the one hand, end users are demanding longer ranges as well as short and fast charging cycles. Manufacturers, on the other hand, need to minimize the impact on battery life through short charge cycles. At the same time, they are looking for ways to make the best possible use of the heat energy generated and to reduce the complexity in the coolant circuit. “One key to successful electrification is efficient thermal management,” says Björn Twiehaus, Managing Director responsible for HELLA’s global electronics business. “With the Coolant Control Hub, we are therefore now launching an innovative subsystem that revolutionizes thermal management in the vehicle.” HELLA’s Coolant Control Hub (CCH) is based on a modular principle and, in its highest level of integration, connects three circuits with each other in the vehicle: the battery, interior electronics as well as the power electronics and electric motor circuit. “What they all have in common is a significant reduction in components, which means that logistics and overall costs for installing the vehicle can be reduced - a major advantage for manufacturers,” says Twiehaus. For example, CCH combines multi-way valves, actuators, distribution systems, electronic circulation pumps, expansion tanks and heat exchangers as well as sensors in one product. “This allows for significant improvements in the structure and number of individual components such as actuators and water lines.”
HELLA permanently transfers this original equipment competence to the independent aftermarket and, together with Hella Gutmann and Hella Pagid, naturally remains loyal to independent garages and wholesalers providing the right solutions for the requirements and mega trends of the future like electrification, digitalization and autonomous driving. With high-quality parts, uncomplicated processes, efficient diagnostic tools, product data and practical technical trainings. In this course, informative trainings for highvoltage systems are already offered via Hella Gutmann. You can find more information on the HELLA Academy website www.hella-academy.com.

PANDEMIC AND RELATED SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGES
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
AUDREY HARLING Group Vice President and General Manager EMEA Motorparts DRIV
DRIV BRANDS HELPING DISTRIBUTORS, WORKSHOPS CAPTURE EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES Highlight Importance of Strong Partners and World-Class Brands KONTICH, Belgium – The automotive parts and service industry might not be as glamorous as the tech sector, but it certainly offers greater resilience. In spite of the pandemic, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, the rise of electrified powertrains and the ever-growing influence of eCommerce, the aftermarket’s fundamentals remain rock-solid. The current state of the market also points – perhaps more clearly than ever – to the importance of close collaboration among leading parts manufacturers, distributors, and their mutual customers, through leading-edge products and trusted brands driving success on the street. “The end customer’s reliance on the independent aftermarket has never been greater than it is today,” said Audrey A. Harling, group vice president and general manager, Tenneco DRiV Motorparts. “In spite of all the unprecedented challenges providing opportunity for life impacting flexibility since
the beginning of the pandemic, we are all working longer and harder and, consequently, have less time to shop around for vehicle maintenance and repair. Consumers want to establish lasting relationships with convenient, trusted service providers who can help keep their cars in safe, reliable condition.
20
And aftermarket workshops – backed by a highly sophisticated and effective parts supply chain – are increasingly seen as that preferred choice.” Ironically, one global supply chain issue, the shortage of computer chips, is causing many consumers to invest more in their current vehicles, since the supply of new models is extraordinarily tight. Additionally, consumers’ increased reliance on Internet-based research and mobile shopping plays to the strengths of the most web-savvy workshops and the industry’s premier brands. “In the eCommerce world, there’s virtually no way for the consumer to accurately evaluate the quality of one product versus another,” Harling said. “That’s why established brands are so important and can play a role in which shop the vehicle owner ultimately chooses.” DRiV Motorparts’ brands include leaders in each of their respective categories. From Monroe® and MOOG® to FERODO®, Payen® and Champion®, DRiV brands have been the predominant choices of workshop owners and mechanics for multiple generations. “It is very difficult for a brand to remain relevant over several decades, but each of our leading brands is even more appealing today for professionals and consumers who want the confidence of a high-quality repair with no surprises,” Harling said. “Our investment in R&D and world-class manufacturing facilities throughout Europe bring confidence to the installer and ultimately the driver.”
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
Partnering with a leading supplier can also help businesses avoid supply disruptions during global emergencies, according to Harling. “As one of the world’s largest suppliers of OE and replacement parts, we have more (sourcing) options and flexibility available through our network of manufacturing facilities,” she said. “Our objective is to always provide best-in-class service to our distribution customers so they can help their own customers capture the market’s growth opportunities.” About Tenneco Tenneco is one of the world's leading designers, manufacturers and marketers of automotive products for original equipment and aftermarket customers, with full year 2020 revenues of $15.4 billion and approximately 73,000 team members working at more than 270 sites worldwide. Hitachi Astemo, new global leader in automotive mobility Hitachi Astemo, a major new technology company with ambitious growth and environmental goals entered the automotive market in 2021. Hitachi Astemo was created from the merger of Hitachi Automotive Systems with three former Honda affiliates: Nissin Kogyo, Keihin and Showa. Astemo stands for Advanced Sustainable Technologies for Mobility, a name fully aligned with the company’s plans to define the future of mobility through technologies and solutions in powertrain, chassis systems and advanced driver assistance for cars and motorcycles.
Building on the strength of our four founding companies, Hitachi Astemo is committed to creating a sustainable future and improved quality of life. Globally the company employs 90,000 people at nearly 140 facilities in 27 countries enabling them to be close to their customers around the world. In Europe, Hitachi Astemo employs 3,300 employees and operates in eleven countries: Germany, France, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Turkey and UK.
Compact, Lightweight Direct-Drive System to Make In-Wheel Electric Vehicles Closer to a Production Reality Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Astemo, Ltd. have jointly announced the development a compact, lightweight direct-drive system for the increasingly popular EV segment, which combines the motor, inverter and brake into a single unit (Fig. 1). This enables the installation of the entire system into the wheel, thus moving the world one step closer to a zero-emissions society. The new motor transmits the high drive force necessary to run an EV directly to the wheels and its lightweight design and world-class 2.5 kW/kg power density significantly limit the weight increase traditionally associated with in-wheel units. Moreover, adopting an in-wheel unit does not require a substantial change to the existing configuration of the suspension and other components. Driveshafts and other indirect mechanisms have been eliminated, allowing motor power to be applied directly to EV operation. This reduces energy loss by 30 percent and increases the range on a single charge compared to existing EVs.
Hitachi and Hitachi Astemo will continue research into practical implementation of the technology, which enables more expansive interior and battery installation spaces. In addition to the vehicle control technology it has been developing, Hitachi Astemo will apply the new direct-drive system to its already-extensive, global EV product lineup. MAIK EVERS Head of Chassis Systems, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket
INTELLIGENT CHASSIS SYSTEMS: PIONEERING INNOVATIONS FOR AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY Schaeffler is steadily expanding its involvement in autonomous mobility based on intelligent chassis systems. On which technologies do you focus? Within the last months, Schaeffler has presented a variety of technologies that will pave the way for autonomous driving. Today, I’ll present you three of them. First, our Space Drive 3 Add-ON, which is ready for production. Space Drive transmits driving and steering commands to the vehicle wheels via purely electronic signals, opening the way for autonomous driving. The technology has been proven in the field, with more than a billion accident-free kilometers and is undergoing fine-tuning under extreme conditions in motorsports. Now, the latest generation, Space Drive 3 Add-ON, is ready for small-volume production. The Space Drive system is triple redundant for maximum safety and meets the exacting functional safety requirements of ISO 26262.
Space Drive 3: Controls every driving manoeuvre.
32
You mentioned a variety of technologies that will pave the way for autonomous driving. What other innovations can we look forward to? Schaeffler has recently unveiled its force-feedback hand wheel actuator (HWA), a mechatronic solution that replaces the conventional steering wheel and mechanical steering column. This reduces the amount of space required for the steering system and opens up completely new possibilities for the design of cab interiors – such as the ability to stow the wheel in the center console when in (semi-)autonomous driving mode. The system can further suppress undesirable feedback, such as vibrations from uneven road surfaces, and supports variable steering gear ratios, enabling new driving dynamics functions.
FOR GREATER EASE OF ACCESS
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
Last but not least: Which third new system can we expect? Schaeffler’s rolling chassis, a modular vehicle platform, which will enable new, driverless mobility solutions for passenger and freight transport. Its flexible architecture supports a broad array of steering and drive variants to suit customer requirements – everything from single electric axles in combination with central steering to implementations incorporating four Schaeffler corner modules. Each one allows a steering angle of up to 90 degrees and comprises a wheel hub motor and a wheel suspension system incorporating air suspension that enables the vehicle to “kneel” for greater ease of access. In addition, it contains an actuator for electromechanical steering and a brake mechanism.

However, if we look at the climate targets that politicians have set themselves, one thing becomes clear: In order to make Germany and Europe greenhouse gas neutral in 2045, we need to be just that: innovative and sustainable. A transformation is currently taking place in many areas. One of the biggest transformations is taking place in the mobility sector. The automotive industry in particular, with its manufacturers and numerous small, medium and large suppliers, is facing unprecedented challenges. The end of the classic combustion engine has been decided. From 2035, only electric cars will be allowed to be registered.
The traffic turnaround has been heralded - and that's a good thing. However, there are several problems that we are still ignoring. In theory, the plans sound great, but in practice, the project resembles a mammoth task for two reasons. taken steps in this direction today will no longer be a participant in the market in a few years, that much is certain. Until a few years ago, my company was also almost completely dependent on the classic combustion engine. For example, we are the world market leader in cylinder-head gaskets. Unfortunately, this component is no longer needed in e-cars. It is a discontinued model. This is a pity for us, because the cylinder-head gasket has made ElringKlinger famous. Fortunately, however, this does not get us into trouble because we positioned ourselves in the direction of sustainable mobility more than two decades ago. ElringKlinger has been active in the field of fuel cells for a good 20 years. We can manufacture com-

plete stacks as well as components. A fuel cell stack consists of a specific quantity of bipolar plates. The finishing and machining processes, such as stamping, embossing and surface finishing, are similar to those used for cylinder-head gaskets and that's how we ultimately came to fuel cells back then. We successfully transferred our knowhow and have continued to research and develop over all these years. With our joint venture with Plastic Omnium, EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies, we are now driving forward the development and large-scale production of fuel cell stacks for CO2-neutral mobility. The company is a full-range supplier of fuel cell stacks and components used in cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and rail and marine applications.
We need the fuel cell if we are to achieve our climate targets. The technology for this comes from us companies. However, the whole thing is doomed to failure if the right framework conditions are not set by policymakers. I therefore expect openness to technology and rapid expansion of the necessary infrastructure. We must finally step on the gas here - otherwise Germany will lose its leading position in the automotive sector in a few years' time. And none of us can want that.

THE ART OF FORMULATION
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
HAKIM EL BAHI Research engineer, electrical and transmission fluids Total Energies
FLUID THINKING Changing requirements in lubricant and coolant technologies have led to a versatile, multipurpose solution The drive toward electrification is impacting every single area of drivetrain development, and lubrication is no exception. In the case of TotalEnergies, the company has been developing a range of dedicated EV fluids, under the brand Quartz EV-Drive MP, able to act as both a transmission lubricant and motor coolant. Hakim El Bahi, a research engineer who specializes in electric and transmission fluids at TotalEnergies, summarizes the challenge of creating such a versatile fluid: “It’s the art of formulation, of balancing properties that sometimes may sound contradictory. It is a new concept.” There are many benefits to a multirole approach to cooling and lubrication, from both a mechanical and electrical efficiency perspective. “With most EVs currently on the market, the motors are cooled indirectly, using a water jacket,” notes El Bahi. This approach has
its limitations when it comes to removing heat from hot spots within the motor; increasingly an issue as manufacturers push smaller motors to higher performance levels. El Bahi highlights the reasons behind this trend toward more power-dense, higher RPM motors. “You can increase the torque or you can increase the speed, but if you do want to increase the torque you have to increase the size of your machine. So, instead of increasing the torque, manufacturers increase the speed. But by increasing the speed you’re increasing heat loss and with that come problems in cooling. ”The answer lies in being able to feed the coolant directly to areas such as the motor windings; using the transmission fluid, which is a dielectric, seemed an ideal solution. As El Bahi outlines, “If you can put the coolant in direct contact with the hot spots of the e-motor, you can

increase the heat extraction. “We thought, let’s use the transmission fluid. It is a dielectric fluid so you can send it to the motor without any fear of short circuits or electrical damage. Now, the fluid is not only a lubricant, it is a coolant as well. That is why we are shifting the vocabulary from lubricants to fluids.
“The fluid is not only a lubricant, it Is now a coolant as well” Hakim El Bahi, research engineer, electric and transmission fluids, TotalEnergies
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
Multiple choice The result is a fluid that is fully capable of lubricating transmission gears and bearings, and electric motor bearings – which, in some vehicle applications, would traditionally rely on dielectric greases – as well as cooling the motor windings. Friction reduction in the electric motor and transmission, combined with greater cooling potential for the motor – enabling higher power outputs to be achieved – will ultimately lead to an increase in overall vehicle efficiency and thus range. Of course, creating a fluid that can meet these opposing requirements to the correct standards was not easy. Considerations such as the heat capacity of the fluid, its viscosity, wear reduction properties and compatibility with the various components it meets all had to be balanced. Of course, every manufacturer will have its own specific motor and transmission architectures, each requiring a different cooling and lubrication strategy. El Bahi explains that there is scope for customization of the latest product: “The idea with Quartz EV Fluid was to design a kind of platform because we know the direction of trends in electric vehicles for lubrication and cooling purposes. However, when working with OEMs, we can start with this platform and design a tailor-made solution, because each will have their own specific requirements.” It is efforts such as TotalEnergies’ that will drive the efficiency of next-generation EVs, and the company is already looking at areas in addition to motors and transmissions where its EV Fluids can be deployed.

THE ADVENT OF ELECTRIFICATION
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
GUIDO SCANAGATTA Senior Product Manager Transportation EMEA Exide Technologies
The evolution of vehicles and the gradual transition to electric traction are transforming energy storage systems. Exide, a world leading manufacturer of energy storage solutions, shows us why the lead-acid battery still has a crucial part to play.
Until recently, the traditional automotive battery was a simple rechargeable energy source to start the engine and power on-board services, such as lights, windshield wipers and basic electrical accessories for driver/passenger safety and comfort This all changed with the introduction of StartStop cars in the early 2000s. The demand on the battery intensified due to an increased number of starts, coinciding with higher vehicle equipment levels. After the initial cold cranking, reoccurring hot starts are less demanding in terms of inrush current. However, during ‘stop mode’, the energy required to maintain control units, cabin climate/
audio systems with enough reserve to still keep the engine (and therefore alternator) operational, has risen exponentially. Exide is widely recognised as the leading innovator in Start-Stop battery technology. As an OEM partner with major vehicle manufacturers, Exide developed and launched the first European AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery in 2004, followed by the first EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) in 2008. The company strives to continuously improve product performances. For example, ’Carbon Boost® 2.0’ is a unique recipe of chemicals developed by

Exide for our Premium and EFB ranges. Exide’s latest EFB battery shows unmatched energy recovery and exceptional dynamic charge acceptance. Unlike most other EFB batteries, Exide EFB is recommended for vehicles incorporating regenerative braking. It also offers significant performance advantages for conventional vehicles in urban use such as taxis, emergency and street services. The advent of electrification Some new vehicles have the dual benefits of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Variations of this arrangement are categorised as mild/full/plug-in hybrids. For cold starting of the engine, lead-acid batteries remain the best solution. The electric powertrain has different requirements. Higher tensions from 48V to 400V+ are essential to operate high-power electric motors. Even though specialist lead-acid batteries can be used for traction, new Lithium-ion batteries have an advantage in terms of light weight and faster recharging. But challenges still remain with this new technology to lower the initial cost and find practical recycling solutions. Lead-Acid in fully electric cars 12V lead-acid batteries have already proved essential in most fully electric models as an auxiliary unit to the main traction power. Independent Auxiliary Batteries maintain continuous power for all critical safety and security functions of Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), especially in the event of faults in the high voltage pack. You must be able to stop and exit the vehicle, INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
meaning ADAS and door locks must be powered at all times, and a 12V lead-acid battery is the safest solution. This power segregation, which is becoming a feature in all cars with heavy reliance on ADAS, will become even more vital to safely operate driverless systems in the future. The aftermarket and the current light vehicle parc Currently, about one third of the European LV parc fleet is made up of Start-Stop vehicles and newer conventional cars are equipped with more electrical devices than ever before. A modern vehicle's electrical system depends on the correct battery and exact original part matching is essential. This task is made easier with the Exide battery finder app or online. Simply enter the registration or chassis number to instantly identify the vehicle and best battery options. Because Exide is an original OE manufacturer, you can be assured that our aftermarket products are produced with the same high quality processes as the original.

MARKUS SCHMITT Head of Service and Network Passenger Cars ZF Aftermarket
The acceptance of e-vehicles has increased significantly in recent months thanks to new government regulations and incentives, a more sophisticated battery technology, and an attractive range of new vehicle models. This will also change the aftermarket, as Markus Schmitt, Head of Service and Network Passenger Cars at ZF Aftermarket. How would you describe the transformation? Working on electrified cars is now part of everyday life in automotive workshops. Many technicians have fortunately already acquired the necessary qualifications - for example at ZF Aftermarket. Service on e-vehicles may only be performed by personnel who have been specially trained for this purpose: We offer training for all levels of high-voltage competence, up to and including the ability to carry out work on live components. At least a level 1 high-voltage qualification is required for work on high-voltage systems. In this area, ZF Aftermarket offers both pure online training and training based on the blended learning approach, consisting of classroom and online training.
How do you make the workshops fit for e-mobility? The workshops need to have an integral understanding of the entire system, and strong partners by their side to secure their long-term success. ZF is such a strong partner working as the technology leader in driveline and chassis technology as well as active and passive safety. With our training offer, we are taking workshops a decisive step further towards Next Generation Mobility and future technologies. The different functions in a workshop also require different knowledge. Just two examples: We have a new basic training to become a "Vehicle Electrics Expert" which includes knowledge of control technology, data communication as well as sensors and actuators and their testing.
48
In addition, we developed a training "Fit for e-mobility as a manager". The workshop owner does not actually carry out the work himself, but he needs to know the most important information on handling e-vehicles, necessary safety measures, qualifications, and equipment.
BE READY FOR THE CHALLENGES

What product offers do you have in the area of e-mobility? Strengthened by the technology leadership of the ZF Group, ZF Aftermarket incorporates the power of the OE engineering innovation and expertise in the aftermarket offer, delivering a complete solution to its customer base. ZF Aftermarket is the One-Stop-Shop for e-mobility. The product range extends from SACHS Shock absorbers to suspension and steering components for the VW ID.4, ID.3 and Skoda Enyaq up to a special low-noise brake disc for the Tesla Model S or the OE innovation Electric Brake Booster which we bring to the aftermarket under the TRW brand. And again, we have added a new training to our program "Brakes and safety systems in e-mobility". This is in high demand, as in EV the drive is included in the braking system and poses a special challenge for the technician.
ZF and CATL signed a strategic partnership agreement. How do you rate that from your point of view as Global Head of Service? We are proud to complement our aftermarket competencies with those of one of the world's leaders in new energy. Together with CATL we will bring the global footprint and leading service solutions of ZF Aftermarket further into play. Just one example for the already started collaboration: CATL will provide ZF with comprehensive battery training know-how, which will be combined with ZF’s DGUV high voltage training to enhance the competitiveness of its training programs.
Would you recommend such kinds of partnerships also for workshops? We are entering into a new era where collaboration will be key to success. This is also valid for workshops. Collaboration across different fields of expertise will become growingly important to face this increased complexity. This can be on a local level – for example with the local insurance agent. In my role as Head of Network Passenger Cars, I also know how important a workshop concept is as a strong partner. With workshop concept like ZF
[pro]Tech workshops get access to vehicle-specific assembly instructions for ZF, LEMFÖRDER, SACHS and TRW parts, service information direct from vehicle manufacturers, exclusive practical trainings, personal on-site support and much more. It's everything workshops need for their everyday – all accessed at a glance via an online portal. ZF shapes the mobility of the future now and with that background ZF Aftermarket is the right partner for everyone in the aftermarket who wants to be ready for the challenges ahead.

The premium filtration brand MANN-FILTER is well prepared for future tasks in the IAM and already offers numerous filters for vehicles with an electric drivetrain. Looking at the aftermarket business, what changes do E-mobility signify? MANN+HUMMEL, one of the global market leaders for filtration with over 80 sites worldwide, has a global strategy that also recognizes changes in mobility. To be fair, e-mobility does not yet play a decisive role in today’s aftermarket and I don’t expect any fundamental changes over the next few years. However: we will not be able to avoid topics such as digitization, access to vehicle data, customer journey, or price transparency. These topics are more present than ever and are continuing to develop at high speed. Plus, we are already well prepared for the filtrati-

PAOLO CATALDI EMEA Sales Director Aftermarket Global Business Unit Brembo SpA
MAINTENANCE OF BRAKING SYSTEMS IN NEW-GENERATION CARS Today, electric and hybrid vehicles use regenerative braking in addition to traditional dissipative braking, resulting in less use of the friction brake than a car with a combustion engine. However, regenerative braking has its own applicability, which depends on the total battery capacity and the battery capacity available at the time of use. In general, for Mild Hybrid and Full Hybrid cars, regenerative braking has very little influence on the use of conventional brakes due to the reduced battery capacity; while it has a moderate influence on plug-in cars and an important influence on electric cars. In addition, cars with high regenerative braking, i.e. electric and plug-in cars, can make the most of their characteristics in driving situations where acceleration/slowing down
(city driving) or uphill/downhill (mountain driving) prevail. In addition, regenerative braking cannot generate the same braking power as dissipative (frictional) braking. Therefore, not only in emergency braking, but also in other modes of use, dissipative braking is always necessary for electric cars. Today, most hybrid and electric cars use carry-over braking systems from equivalent conventional models. This means that, particularly for electric cars, these braking systems are oversized for normal car use and the actuation components will wear very little. However, three key points should be highlighted. In electric and hybrid cars, weight reduction is a key factor, because it allows the car's range, one of the most critical points, to be increased.
56
Moreover, car manufacturers, together with brake system manufacturers, are revising the design standards for these braking systems. This is done, among other things, to be able to lighten the braking system and consequently the car, increasing its driving range. However, the maximum performance of the dissipative braking system must be maintained, which must be able to function optimally even without regenerative braking. Finally, with regard to the replacement of braking components of electric cars, one of the main causes will be deterioration, that can be caused by oxidation due to lack of use. A factor that seems to be particularly relevant in countries with harsher and rainier climates.
FROM SUPER SPORT TO CITY CAR
Manufacturers are reacting by trying to develop technological solutions suitable for this type of vehicle. In particular, the most important solutions concern: lightness, reduce of noise and residual torque, corrosion and friction material. The lightweight design of discs, brake pads and calipers makes it possible to reduce the weight of unsprung masses, thereby reducing consumption. For an electric vehicle, this means, above all, greater autonomy. Brake noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) are key parameters for modern cars, especially in the premium segment of the market. Even more so in a quiet vehicle like an electric car, where brake noise is not allowed. In an electric vehicle, residual torque has a much greater influence than in a standard car, as it affects the vehicle's energy balance, reducing its range.
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
As the braking system is used less frequently, special care is needed to prevent excessive corrosion of brake discs and pads. The friction material must guarantee a high and stable coefficient, even if the braking system has undergone long periods of inactivity. Putting all these characteristics together, it is clear that the brakes must be developed specifically for electric vehicles, with very good possibilities for innovation in relation to corrosion prevention, friction materials and lightness. As far as maintenance is concerned, it is very important to check for corrosion and possible deterioration of the components. The proper functioning of the brake caliper and the possible replacement of deteriorated components must be carried out promptly so as not to compromise the operation and safety of the system. Speaking of the future of braking systems, at the end of last year Brembo, thanks to its many years of experience in the field, introduced SENSIFY™, a new pioneering intelligent braking system that integrates the most advanced software based on artificial intelligence with the Company’s world-renowned brake components. SENSIFY™ combines the current Brembo product portfolio of calipers, discs and friction materials with digital technology and artificial intelligence to create a flexible and revolutionary platform that includes software, predictive algorithms and data management to control the brake system digitally. With SENSIFY™ the braking system is no longer simply a sum of its parts but an ecosystem, where
artificial intelligence and software play an active role. Data collection is leveraged to improve the driver experience and allows the system to be constantly updated. By introducing SENSIFY™, Brembo is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with a braking system, opening up entirely new opportunities to drivers to improve their experience on the road and customize brake response to their driving style. SENSIFY™ fully embraces Brembo’s vision - Turning Energy into Inspiration - and it’s another significant step forward in providing cutting-edge, innovative, intelligent and sustainable solutions to the automotive industry. SENSIFY™ has evolved naturally from Brembo’s heritage and know-how. It combines the design of the best braking components with the integration of a digital brain and sensors that control each wheel independently. The result is more precise car handling, increased performance and confidence: a unique driving experience. SENSIFY™ is also a more sustainable braking solution. Thanks to the optimized braking action on each wheel combined with the absence of drag between pads and discs, emissions are minimized. Furthermore SENSIFY™ opens up opportunities in car design, offering great flexibility for car makers and simplifying integration in any electric and internal combustion engine platform – from super sport to city car and, potentially, to the latest commercial vehicles.

SKF’s constant investment in product development and innovation, based on sustainable practices, make SKF the right reliable automotive partner for a better world.
Intelligent, connected, safe: The Future of Brakes Brake systems are becoming increasingly intelligent so they can meet the future needs of a modern E/E vehicle architecture. Continental, one of the largest original equipment manufacturers worldwide, actively shapes the future of tomorrows brake systems. Its aftermarket brand ATE supplies the independent aftermarket with premium brake products and services. Brakes are the single most important element of active driving safety. So far, they have primarily been mechanical systems with vacuum brake boosters and hydraulic power transmission from the brake pedal to the wheel brake. Electronic safety systems, such as the anti-lock brake system, ensure that the brakes proactively contribute to the driving safety in borderline situations even without driver intervention. In addition, brakes must now also contribute to vehicle efficiency by helping to prevent CO2 emissions or even particulate emissions during friction braking. With more functions added, the vehicle architecture became a complex network of dozens of dedicated Electronic Control Units (ECUs). However, to realize a modern E/E architecture, single functions such as the anti-lock brake system need to be integrated in a more centralized structure, in which there is one high performance computer responsible per domain (e.g. infotainment, Driving Assistance). This architectural revolution of motion control has already begun – one recent example: Continental has supplied VW’s e-car ID.3 with the world’s first mass-produced high-performance server for cars. Brake-by-wire technology An important development for brake systems in terms of assisted and automated driving functions as well as the electrification of vehicles is the switch from hydraulic to electromechanical
actuation (brake-by-wire). The first existing electrohydraulic brake-by-wire brake system named MK C1 by Continental went in production in 2016. The MK C1 as well as its successor, the MK C2, build up brake pressure faster than any conventional hydraulic system and do not require any brake booster or vacuum pump. While the brake feeling is simulated for the driver, dosage of the maximum braking power does not depend on the force in the foot. In case of an emergency braking, the actual braking request comes from the automation or an assistance system and takes instant action.. Furthermore, in 80 percent of deceleration situations in electric or hybrid cars, recuperative braking can help to recharge the battery while the pedal feels completely normal to the driver. Eliminating the hydraulic system step by step The MK C1 by Continental was only the first step towards a true brake-by-wire technology operating the rear axle wheel brakes electromechanically. In theory, if all four wheel brakes are actuated electromechanically (“dry”), this could entirely eliminate the hydraulic system. The current focus on pressure generation and modulation with appropriate control intelligence would then no longer be necessary. As this is a future scenario on how the brake system can be designed in the future, there is still some time until true brake-by wire technology and the elimination of the hydraulic system become relevant for daily business in the workshops. Today’s daily workshop business focuses on hydraulic brake systems and therefore, the right spare parts and services are needed. ATE is the well-known premium brand by Continental that offers the brake technology and products in car manufacturer quality. 64
a radiator fan. When the vehicle isn’t moving, the radiator fan provides the additional airflow which is needed to prevent overheating. A/C system in electric cars Like normal modern engine powered cars, electric cars also have an air conditioning system. In traditional vehicles, the engine provides the power for the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. At electric cars, they use electricity. Electricity is used to power the compressor for example. For the heater often an electric heater is used. Because these parts are electrically powered, the vehicle range will reduce when the AC system is operating.

ERIC SCHULER President of Service Valeo
MICHEL FORISSIER Chief Engineering and Marketing Officer Valeo
FOR VALEO, THE FUTURE OF THE AFTERMARKET LIES IN ELECTRIFICATION AND DIGITALISATION We have asked Eric Schuler, President of Valeo Service, and Michel Forissier, Chief Engineering and Marketing Officer of Valeo, to share their opinions on the future of the automotive aftermarket business. Here are their thoughts.
68
Eric Schuler: We see two major revolutions that will be having an outstanding impact on our aftermarket business: vehicle electrification and digitalisation. Indeed, today, automotive is experiencing a radical shift towards electric vehicles. With CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations becoming more global, with an increasing number of cities and states banning diesel cars in the next few years, with China imposing quotas of 40% purely electric vehicles by 2030, and with car makers significantly developing their EV offer (there are already more than 200 electric models available in 2021), we are seeing a drastic shift in the vehicle sales mix going from less than 5% for EV worldwide in 2020 to an estimated 68% by 2030.
WE'LL DO WHAT IT TAKES TO HELP OUR PARTNERS
Michel Forissier: Valeo is N°1 worldwide for electrical systems. One car out of every 3 on the planet is equipped with a Valeo solution. We are ramping up production of low and high voltage solutions for hybrid and electric, and we will equip 90 new vehicles in the next three years with our technology. Our portfolio is continuously growing with new solutions, and we are looking beyond cars and LCVs as new types of eMobility are emerging. Indeed, we are already delivering ePowertrains for e-bikes, e-scooters, e-robots, e-droids, light city e-cars and last-mile delivery e-trucks. Last but not least, in 2022, we will be launching a new product line with our AC charging stations in order to help electrification expand.
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
NEW OPPORTUNITIES Eric Schuler: For our aftermarket customers, our value proposition is to fulfil the future repair and maintenance needs of hybrid and electric vehicles currently present in the car parc. We will offer the very best support in terms of product offer and services, growing our portfolio from 2,500 SKUs to more than 4,000 in 2022. We have opened new opportunities in 2021 with the 48V iBSG systems (Integrated Belt Starter Generator) and will continue to pursue these opportunities, from 2022 onward, with technical parts linked to the new cooling technologies in EVs as well as the new power transmission devices such as e-motors, on-board chargers and DC/DC converters, including all information about the software linked to these products. In order to further help workshops and distributors, we are also putting a lot of effort into the digitalisation of our services. For example, Valeo Tech@ssist has been developed to provide technicians with advanced online technical support.
Tech@ssist is a digital module that offers three main functionalities: it is a very quick and intuitive search engine which already covers more than 45,000 references. One can easily search products by VIN number, vehicle type or by product references and access all available information including technical characteristics, pictures, or automakers’ compatibility information. Tech@ssist also gives access to a complete library of more than 5,000 technical documents including technical service bulletins, security data sheets, tutorials, videos and fitting instructions. And finally, because we’re aware of the increasing complexity of technical automotive maintenance, we have developed a complete training library of online webinars which can be followed live or on demand (more than 450 webinars are already available).

12 VOLT BATTERY LEAD-ACID BATTERIES ARE READY TO SUPPORT ELECTRIC VEHICLES
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
DR. CHRISTIAN ROSENKRANZ Vice President Industry and Governmental Relations EMEA Clarios
THE ROLE OF 12 VOLT BATTERIES IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Dr. Rosenkranz, as Vice President Industry and Governmental Relations EMEA at Clarios, you probably know everything there is about battery technology. Can you tell us, why modern electric or hybrid electric vehicles also have a 12 Volt lead-acid battery on board? We were under the impression that the high voltage lithiumion battery would power the car. The high-voltage Li-Ion battery powers the drivetrain and the propulsion system, but not the whole car and it’s electrical power net. The internal electrical 14V power net system with its comfort and critical safety features is powered mainly by the 12 Volt battery, also known as an auxiliary battery. It works as a secondary power source for
the vehicle electrical system and ensures that an electric vehicle maintains its functionality during driving but also during key-off overnight parking when the high-voltage battery is disconnected from the drive train. Can you give us an example? Of course. First off, it does not perform a starter function, but it supplies the onboard computer, which ultimately controls the high-voltage battery. If the 12 Volt battery is discharged, the on-board computer cannot start up. Thus, the frequency converter is not activated and starting is impossible. The 12 Volt battery also serves as a buffer to create redundancy for functional safety aspects. In the event of a failure of the high-voltage propulsion lithium-ion battery,
72
the auxiliary battery takes over and powers the safety features of the vehicle to enable the car to safely pull over. For example, power steering and brake boosting must work at all times to maintain manoeuvrability. Finally, auxiliary batteries are also essential for a vehicle’s comfort features such as radio, sound systems, and even the interior light, which may also prove crucial in an emergency. All these factors call for a reliable, high-performance power supply.

INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
But why use lead-acid technology? Isn't Lithium-ion superior? Lithium-ion technology is often considered the successor of lead-acid when it comes to battery technology. However, it is not as inherently robust as other rechargeable technologies and requires continuous monitoring. Lithium-ion cells need protection from being overcharged and deep discharge. Special protection circuitry is mandatory to maintain the voltage within safety limits. Additionally, the cell temperature distribution must be controlled by either passive or active cooling systems. Overall, it is a very sophisticated technology. Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, are known to be both reliable and affordable. Their wide operational temperature window intrinsically enhances the operational robustness of the entire system. The safety record of lead-acid batteries makes them invaluable for Europe’s future low-emission mobility sector.
Lifecycle analysis of a vehicle’s environmental impact shows that lead-acid has a lower impact compared to other technologies: From a production and supply standpoint, lead-acid batteries are domestically produced in Europe for all target markets. This independence from global supply structures is due to the established and well-maintained recycling industry, where almost 80% of material in a new VARTA lead-acid battery comes from recycling. This is one of the leading examples of a circular economy in Europe. Overall, it is safe to say that the unique benefits of lead-acid technology will be important to meet growing consumer expectations for safety, comfort, and connectivity. So, lead-acid technology is old but not oldfashioned. But what makes VARTA® batteries stand out? VARTA AGM and EFB batteries have proven their reliability for years, making them the perfect companion in supporting the 12 Volt electrical system of electric or hybrid electric vehicles. Their sturdy construction and behaviour as well as their lack of electronics make them a reliable and robust power source. The VARTA 12 Volt battery portfolio is ready to support both today's as well as future electric vehicles. Our batteries deliver energy for crucial safety systems, comfort features, and fuel-saving functions. They even have sufficient spare capacity to power vehicle systems that are yet to come.

EYAL ZBEDA Chairman Zbeda Group
ELECTRIFICATION IS HERE AND HERE TO STAY Things are going to look a whole lot different. We can argue when it will start impacting our business, but for sure it will. An internal combustion engine (ICE) has about 2000 moving parts, an electric car has less than 50 moving components! Car maintenance services will become much less frequent, and most will just make sure all is o.k. This means that many of the product we are currently selling, will slowly fade away or will be consumed much less. We cannot fight these trends. Nothing we can do to stop them or stall them. But there is a lot we can do once we acknowledge it's coming soon. It's now the time to ack! There are endless ways to act. I will just put few of them just to show you, you can do it and move forward.
Workshops are stuck. Not prepared for the new age. They will need training. You must use Nexus Academy to position yourself as the one who helped them most in the transition. Many new "car maker" will arise, whether Chinese or European, most of which do not have logistics, nor a garage network. Build and enforced your NexusAuto Garage concept, you could become those car makers service-provider, both as a garage network, logistics and also on a technical level. An Electric car must have a Charging Station. Find a partner to cooperate with. Charging stations will be needed at every household, naturally, but also at every workshop. Charging cable comes with it. Start selling it. EV Batteries will become a major product category. Start being involved in it, think of EV battery maintenance, replacing cells will become big volumes.
76
Let's not forget that we are currently all about parts…do not forget to position yourself as the best option for EV parts. Make an inquiry with all your suppliers, which parts they have for EVs, start informing the market, position yourself as the TOP EV supplier. No doubt things will be much more digital. Digital Services will start emerging and we need to start implementing them. Start-up world and new initiative are all around us. Use Mobilion Ventures and adopt at least one start up that would match your business, your contacts or your close circles. Dare to go to places you never were in, software, digital, it all comes to bringing value to your customers and to your customer's customers.
ACT NOW AND OWN IT!
You cannot make it all happens. Start by doing some of it, and things will gradually start moving towards your company. New activities, new initiatives, new state of mind. We have to take ownership on the Electrification age, now when it is just starting to impact.

INTELLIGENT CHASSIS SYSTEMS:
Pioneering innovations for autonomous mobility Schaeffler is steadily expanding its involvement in autonomous mobility based on intelligent chassis systems. Within the last months, Schaeffler has presented a variety of technologies that will pave the way for autonomous driving:
flexible interior design
• Space Drive 3 Add-ON is the third generation of its Space Drive drive-by-wire system • Force-Feedback Handwheel Actuator (HWA) will replace the conventional steering wheel • Rolling Chassis is a vehicle platform that opens the way to completely new forms of autonomous mobility
stowable steering components Space Drive and HWA: Supported by mechatronic actuators on the steering gear and steering wheel, the system controls every driving maneuver
Space Drive ready for production
Rolling Chassis: technologies for new mobility solutions
Schaeffler’s Space Drive steer-by-wire system transmits driving and steering commands to the vehicle wheels via purely electronic signals, opening the way for autonomous driving. The technology has been proven in the field, with more than a billion accident-free kilometers and is undergoing fine-tuning under extreme conditions in motorsports. The latest generation, Space Drive 3 Add-ON, is ready for small-volume production. The Space Drive system is triple redundant for maximum safety and meets the exacting functional safety requirements of ISO 26262.
Schaeffler’s rolling chassis, a modular vehicle platform, will enable new, driverless mobility solutions for passenger and freight transport. In addition it contains an actuator for electromechanical steering and a brake mechanism.
HWA opens up completely new possibilities Schaeffler has recently unveiled its force-feedback handwheel actuator (HWA), a mechatronic solution that replaces the conventional steering wheel and mechanical steering column.

CHARGING TOWARDS AN ELECTRIFIED FUTURE
INSIDE EDITION 27 • MARCH 2022
NEIL FRYER Vice President and General Manager for Global Aftermarket business Delphi Technologies
DELPHI TECHNOLOGIES AFTERMARKET LEADS THE WAY FOR WORKSHOPS CHARGING TOWARDS AN ELECTRIFIED FUTURE Electrification is a multi-sector phenomenon with the ultimate aim of de-carbonising industries and their products. The automotive industry’s own revolution is working to find the right electrified vehicle (EV) solutions for a sustainable future. OE & Aftermarket alike are incorporating the latest technological developments into their products as part of a journey which is still in its relatively early days. We operate in a sector that is rooted in the continuous progression of technology, services, and solutions. It is the historic blueprint of the workshop to be in a near-constant state of transition and asking, ‘what’s next?’, so why are workshops feeling so daunted by this omni-present trend? In recent surveys, Delphi Technologies Aftermarket asked customers around the world what
they perceived as their biggest challenge when it comes to electrified vehicles. A third* were concerned about keeping up with the latest technology and when we look back to the past we can begin to understand why. Gasoline Port Fuel Injection (PFI) was followed by the introduction of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), diesel injection saw the advent of high performance, common rail (CR) technology. Hydraulic power steering systems were superseded by electronic power steering (EPS) technology, all these innovations were incremental in nature and therefore easier for workshops to embrace the shifting tech, bit-by-bit. However, the adaptation to electrification is taking workshops in new into unfamiliar territory. In 2020 Europe overtook China as the market
80
leader for the first time with EVs making up 43.3% market share^, and in the Middle East EV production grew 735.5% in 2021 while still being far behind all other regions**. So, with the fast-developing electrification model and the varying adoption rates across the world, we understand how important it is for us to partner together with our customers on this journey; dependable advice on the right investments for workshops, training to upskill staff, and providing solutions the aftermarket can trust.
CHARGING TOWARDS AN ELECTRIFIED FUTURE
“The transition towards an EV world is inevitable. This may cause worry and anxiety for our customers, thinking they’re ill-prepared or ill-equipped for what’s happening right now and what’s to come. Building trust between us and our customer is at the forefront of what we do. We have provided market leading engineering throughout our history, and we will continue to offer leading technology as the aftermarket explores what electrification will mean in the future,” comments Neil Fryer, Vice President & General Manager Global Aftermarket. “We will remain a go-to source for the tools, knowledge and resources needed to meet the real-time challenges our customers face today, while at the same time we continue to serve their ICE needs in the foreseeable future.” Delphi Technologies Aftermarket is keenly focused on innovating and leading automotive sustainability for people and the planet. Electrification clearly is a cornerstone of sustainable mobility, and we will continue to break down barriers to enable the aftermarket to embrace the EV transition. * Delphi Technologies Electrified Vehicle Technology customer survey Jan 2022 33% cited concerns keeping up with the latest technology, 33% cited keeping up with the latest training, 22% were unfamiliar with EV requirements, and 12% cited safety concerns. ^ Frost & Sullivan Global Electric Vehicle Outlook 2021. ** HEV and EV engine installation IHS Feb 2022

CHRISTOPHE NICOT Vice President Europe Research Innovation Development NTN
NTN, GOING ELECTRIC For over 100 years, NTN has been designing and producing bearings and transmissions, adapting them to the needs of its clients. This is how NTN has been able to earn the trust of car manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, as well as the aftermarket operators. The automotive market is entering a new phase through the electrification of various means of transport, and even towards autonomous driving. NTN continues to innovate alongside its clients by developing products and services specific to these new applications making up the market of tomorrow. The Group is indeed more than ever looking ahead towards the future. This philosophy is reflected in its new identity, summed up in the phrase "Make the world Nameraka". NTN is indeed committed to achieving a more fluid, mobile, and harmonious future, based on a more efficient use of energy. NTN's product range is centred on three markets: transmission, chassis, and both internal combus-
tion and electric motors. In addition to bearings, transmission joints, clutch release bearings, linear modules, distribution rollers, suspension parts, and the related services and training, NTN also has a mechatronics offer in its catalogue. The latter integrates speed and position sensors that are already equipping ABS/ESP systems, as well as the electric motors of hybrid or 100% electric vehicles of the Group's clients. These very same sensors will enable embedded diagnostics and predictive maintenance on vehicles in the future. From the outset, NTN has always focused on the mechanical and energy performance of its products. The Group brings innovative solutions to this new challenge of electrification. For example, it has developed specific hybrid ceramic ball
84
bearings for electric geared motors, along with two new generation 3 wheel-bearings that meet the specific charging and space constraints of electric vehicles: • A lighter, bi tapered bearing module to help counteract the increased weight of the batteries on the axle. • A particularly compact double-row ball bearing module with an associated transmission seal. This enables a saving of almost 35 mm on each wheel, reducing the axial space requirement and facilitating the installation of the motor, its gearbox, and equipment within a very tight space. The turning radius is also significantly improved.
CHARGING TOWARDS AN ELECTRIFIED FUTURE
"Innovation forms an integral part of our Group's DNA. The trust our clients place in us rests on our ability to provide them with new, competitive solutions, developed in partnership with them", explains Christophe Nicot, Vice President NTN Europe Research Innovation Development. "To further develop this approach, we stepped up our open innovation policy over the last three years. This enables us to track changes in usage, identify industrial needs upstream, and thus propose new technologies to meet them. We endeavour to turn these changes into an opportunity.” Thanks to this dynamic approach, new partnerships for the development of specific metallurgical treatments and green lubricants for electric vehicle applications were signed with major manufacturers. NTN also collaborates closely with start-ups to facilitate, for example, automotive maintenance operations. Finally, because mobility is no longer limited to cars, NTN is extending its offer to include bicycles, specifically electric bicycles. With this in mind,

NTN is participating in the development of geared motors alongside various players in this market. The Group provides its expertise in mechanical and mechatronic products where reliability, compactness, and performance are the key words. Studies are underway on the development of bearings and speed, position, and torque measurement solutions drawing on the Group's automotive know-how. NTN also intends to participate more extensively in the development of this ecosystem. To this end, the equipment manufacturer is developing complementary activities such as designing an autonomous recharging station for electric bicycles, equipped with a vertical axis wind turbine and solar panels generating electricity for recharging. A new adventure for NTN!
