The 4 Most Common Meditation Struggles

You sit. You try. And somehow, it never looks like the pictures. Let's troubleshoot the four most common meditation struggles no fluff, just fixes.

Struggle 1: "I Can't Sit Still"

The Fix: Don't.

Seriously. If sitting still feels like torture, stop sitting still. Try walking meditation. Try yoga. Try lying down. Try meditating while stirring your coffee. The posture doesn't matter. The attention does.

If you want to sit still but can't, try:

• Sitting in a chair instead of on the floor

• Moving first—shake out your body, stretch, jog in place

• Setting a shorter timer (two minutes, not twenty)

Struggle 2: "My Mind Won't Stop Racing"

The Fix: Give It a Job.

A racing mind is an under-stimulated mind. Instead of fighting it, give it something specific to do:

• Count breaths: 1 (inhale), 2 (exhale), up to 10, then start over

• Label thoughts: "planning," "remembering," "judging" as they arise

• Focus on the triangle of your breath: the pause after inhale, the exhale, the pause after exhale

A busy brain needs a task. Give it one.

Struggle 3: "I Fall Asleep Every Time"

The Fix: Meditate with Your Eyes Open.

Falling asleep usually means one of two things: you're genuinely exhausted (in which case, just sleep your body needs it) or you're so relaxed that you tip over into drowsiness.

If you want to stay alert:

• Keep your eyes slightly open, gaze soft and downward

• Sit up straight, not lounging

• Meditate earlier in the day, not right before bed

• Try a walking or standing meditation

Struggle 4: "I Don't Feel Anything"

The Fix: Stop Looking for Feelings.

Meditation isn't about feeling something specific. It's about being with what's already here. If what's here is numbness, boredom, or "nothing," that's fine. That's your experience. Be with that.

You don't need to feel calm, blissful, or enlightened. You just need to show up. The feelings will come and go on their own.

Why Troubleshooting Matters

Each struggle has a physical component. Racing mind? Stress response. Falling asleep? Nervous system crash. Numbness? Possible disconnection from body awareness . Addressing these struggles isn't just about "getting better" at meditation it's about understanding your own nervous system.

And when you understand your system, you can regulate it. And when you regulate it, your digestion improves, your sleep deepens, and your body heals .
