racing the covers of many magazines both in the United States and then in different countries throughout the world, one would think Jean Shafiroff leads a very easy and glamorous life. But what people do not realize is that Jean Shafiroff is a hard-working philanthropist who has authored a book on philanthropy, hosts a weekly TV show, and serves on multiple charity boards. Often referred to as the First Lady of Philanthropy by international and national press, Jean is a tireless and positive thinking leader who has dedicated her life to her work in philanthropy. She advocates for many causes with a particular focus on underserved populations, women’s rights, animal rights and health care. Jean has been honored by dozens of charities for her generosity, leadership, and fundraising abilities. Recently NY Lifestyles met with Jean to talk about her outlook on 2026, her philanthropy and fashion. NYLM: What are your thoughts about 2026? Jean Shafiroff: I am excited for this year and am keeping a very positive attitude which helps make everything easier. To very young people I say, “ Do all you can to get a good education. Education opens all doors and opportunities . If school is not your thing, then prepare for your future by going to a trade school. In this country we have so many opportunities to create a good career for ourselves. Opportunities abound. Remain positive, work hard, live an honest life, and a great future can be yours. “ NYLM: What encouraged you to become a philanthropist? How did you come to the realization that this was your path? Jean Shafiroff: At a very young age, I was encouraged to get involved in helping those in need by both my teachers and parents. I attended 12 years of Catholic school on Long Island where the nuns taught us the importance of helping the less fortunate. Both my parents were good role models, too. My father was a schoolteacher, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom. They instilled in me good values. My higher education, travel experiences and then work experience were also key in encouraging me to become a philanthropist.
After high school, I continued my education at Columbia University where I earned a BS in Physical Therapy and then an MBA in Finance from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. My education played a key role in the philanthropic work I do because it taught me valuable skills that I would need to become a leader, organizer and volunteer fundraiser in philanthropy. In between college and graduate school, I worked for one year as a physical therapist at the inner-city hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. There I worked with patients who lived at or below the poverty level and who also had serious illnesses. This experience made me see first-hand all the suffering that existed in this world. I then decided to go to graduate school to pursue higher education. After earning my MBA, I worked on Wall Street as an investment banker for a number of years where I learned a great deal about business. Soon, I realized I had to do more with my life to help those who truly suffered. I gradually got involved with different charities by volunteering, donating resources, and serving on the board of directors of a few different charities. Then, I started to volunteer at my daughters’ schools. Today I serve on seven charity boards, one honorary board and two advisory boards. Some are charities with a regional scope while others are international in their influence. Each year, I chair about eight to nine charity galas. I also host and underwrite many large cocktail parties in my homes and elsewhere for various non-profit organizations. In addition, I host a TV show on philanthropy called “Successful Philanthropy.” Philanthropy is my life’s mission. It is greatly fulfilling. I plan to stay involved with it for the rest of my life.

NYLM: The number of projects you support as a philanthropist is unbelievable. Which ones are a priority for you at the moment? Jean Shafiroff: I have four areas of focus: women’s rights, rights of underserved populations, health care and animal rights. Although these are my main interests, I also support LGBTQ rights and the arts. Since fashion is a great interest of mine, my involvement as a long-standing board member of the Couture Council of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology is also something I love to support. NYLM: You are the author of “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give”. Please tell us what this book is about. Jean Shafiroff: The main message of my book is that anyone can become a philanthropist. If you do not have large amounts of money to donate, you can become a philanthropist by giving your time and knowledge. Time and knowledge are very valuable resources. However, I do believe that those that have financial resources have an obligation to give financially. Another important message in my book is that giving is greatly rewarding. When we generously give to help others, we achieve great personal satisfaction. Giving is most often far more satisfying than receiving. The purpose of writing my book was to motivate others and then to serve as a guide for philanthropic work. NYLM: In your TV show “Successful Philanthropy” you interviewed many people, including candidates for the US presidency. Why did you decide to produce and host this TV show? Jean Shafiroff: On “Successful Philanthropy” I have interviewed many different celebrities, politicians, fashion designers, executive directors of charities and billionaire philanthropists. My TV show gives others a platform to speak about their philanthropic work. The show is designed to motivate others so that they too will want to become involved in the giving process.

NYLM: What is your main dream as a philanthropist? Jean Shafiroff: I love to inspire others to become interested in the giving process. Especially important to me is encouraging future generations to get involved and excited about philanthropy. It is my dream to see a world where more and more people on all socioeconomic levels realize that they can help change this world for the better. The divide between those that have resources and those that do not, is too large. Philanthropy can help to greatly reduce that divide. I dream of a day when poverty and war no longer exist. I also dream of a world where all people have an opportunity to receive a good education and improve the conditions of their lives. NYLM: You have been honored by many charities and in 2022 you were recognized as the “First Lady of Philanthropy of New York” by the New York State Assembly, at what point did you decide to make this your life’s work? Jean Shafiroff: It all happened gradually. Once my daughters went off to college, I became more and more involved with different charity boards, charity galas and then hosting philanthropic events in my homes and elsewhere. I also started to do a great deal of volunteer fundraising. I love the volunteer work I do and believe it is a great privilege to be able to do it. As I said, it is far more enjoyable to give than to receive. There is a sense of satisfaction, or accomplishment, from a spiritual point of view, when giving. Remember, philanthropy helps to bridge the gap between those who have resources and those who do not. I feel it is my duty and obligation to do this work. NYLM: You are widely known for your fashion and wonderful sense of style. You have been on many bestdressed lists. Which designers do you especially love to wear? Jean Shafiroff: For years I have purchased and worn clothing by Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Chanel. In addition, I love to support the work of many other great designers who are not as well known. These include Malan Breton, Victor dE Souza, Zang Toi, B Michael, Ese Azenabor, and Ron Dyce. I have a large ballgown collection that I plan to donate to a museum one day. NYLM: On December 27, 2025, you were one of 24 people listed on Tatler Magazine’s Style Icons Most Glamorous Gown’s Lists. HRH Princess Catherine of Wales, many Royals and international celebrities were on the list too. You feel honored to be on that list. Tell us more. Jean Shafiroff: Yes, I am greatly honored to be on Tatler’s list for the Style Icons Most Glamorous Ballgowns of 2025. I congratulate all the others on the list. To be on an international list such as this is a great honor for me. NYLM: You have over 1.2 million Instagram followers. How do you keep your followers interested? Jean Shafiroff: My Instagram platform @jeanshafiroff promotes positivity and my love of philanthropy and fashion. It is my passion to inspire good will and positivity in this world. MY NIGHTMARE STALKER: THE EVA LARUE STORY

aytime Emmy Award-winning actress Eva LaRue endured a harrowing 12-year ordeal of stalking that profoundly affected every aspect of her and her daughter’s lives. Her stalker subjected her to relentless harassment, sending depraved, threatening, and obsessive letters not only to LaRue but also to her loved ones. The campaign of terror began in 2002, as she rose to stardom on CSI: Miami. Although the stalker served three years in jail and is now on probation with a restraining order, LaRue and her daughter continue to live under the shadow of constant vigilance and fear. The Paramount+ Documentary, My Nightmare Stalker, explores the devastating mental abuse inflicted from afar. Throughout her ordeal, LaRue faced the frustrating reality that stalking is often a “crimeless crime.” Law enforcement, constrained by legal limitations, could do little until a physical crime occurred—even as the emotional and psychological toll on LaRue and her family mounted. She lived with the knowledge that stalking frequently escalates to more serious crimes, forcing public figures like her to take extraordinary precautions: mapping police stations, checking around and under the car daily, and teaching her daughter to be perpetually cautious. “I remember once when Eva and I were talking on the couch, and the doorbell rang. Kaya, who was about seven, ran to answer it, and Eva quickly followed, unsure who was there. After the neighbor left, Eva was distraught, and Kaya didn’t understand why. That was the first time I really saw her fear. I had been the one forwarding the awful letters, but I hadn’t felt her fear myself. In that moment, I realized how dangerous things could have been, and for the first time, I truly understood what she was going through.” – Anthony Turk, longtime publicist and friend
The trauma was not only emotional but also physical. LaRue experienced hair loss, developed severe anxiety, and suffered health complications as a result of relentless psychological stress. Her daughter lost much of her childhood to fear, and their daily lives were shaped by routines designed for survival. The stalker’s identity remained uncertain, keeping LaRue and her team on edge. LaRue recalls, “At one point, we thought it was the landscaper or the neighbor. We had no name or face to this entity.” LaRue’s faith was a significant tool in helping her cope, guiding her through dark moments and allowing her to find gratitude and joy despite the constant threat. She leaned on her Baha’i beliefs, seeking spiritual tools and guidance to protect herself and her daughter, Kaya. Even after the stalker’s imprisonment, the fear persisted. LaRue describes her reality as a “life of vigilance,” acknowledging that while her stalker’s jail time was finite, the impact on her family is lifelong. Her story underscores the urgent need for stronger anti-stalking laws, better victim support, and greater societal awareness of the seriousness of stalking. Practical advice also proved essential: LaRue learned to purchase homes under an LLC for privacy, to document everything, and to seek support from organizations like SPARC, which trains first responders and provides resources for victims. LaRue hopes to amplify awareness of the severity of stalking and its connection to mental health issues. Despite everything, LaRue and her daughter have rebuilt their lives, emerging stronger and more resilient. By sharing her experience, she hopes to help others—reminding them that they are not alone, that their instincts are valid, and that survival and healing are possible, even in the long shadow of trauma. And the beautiful thing about being a New Yorker is that we’re usually only a direct flight away. Here’s a rundown of a few spots to have on your radar where if you’re not going, you’ll certainly be hearing about someone who is in 2026. CAP CANA – THE CARIBBEAN’S NEWEST GEM In a sea of idyllic isles, Capa Cana has quickly emerged as the Caribbean’s new ‘It’ destination for the jet set and travelers looking for a slice of paradise in an exclusive setting with privacy and premium offerings. The newly opened St. Regis Cap Cana Resort alone is a gem not to be missed – newly opened in 2025, the property has become an attraction in and of itself with a unique design that pays homage to Dominican culture via its tapestries, materials and colors. Its swim up rooms and luxury amenities are exactly what you would expect from the luxury hospitality brand in the middle of the Dominican island. And with world class golfing, pristine beaches, and luxury amenities, expect Cap Cana to be 2026’s hottest Caribbean destination. ENGELBERG – THE APRÈS SKI DESTINATION For those that are fans of snow, nestled in the middle of the Swiss mountains is the Alpine village of Engelberg which has become Switzerland’s latest most trending destination. Only a short drive south of Zurich, which counts with multiple straight flights from both Newark and JFK, Engelberg has become the new St. Moritz for today’s luxury thrill seekers, providing world-class skiing in a quaint and charming village setting that instantly transports you to a story-tale setting. At the center of the town lies the Kempinski Palace, a 5-star luxury hotel that blends historic Belle Époque architecture with modern elegance, offering premium rooms, a rooftop infinity pool, spa, fine dining and direct access to slopes that have been the backdrop setting to 007 Bond high-speed adventures. South Korea’s affinity for luxury details and fine attention to service has elevated the country’s premium offerings which in result is attracting cityseeking travellers who want to experience culture, haute cuisine, avant garde style and design in an electrifying metropolis that balances high speed with tranquillity. Every moment of the experience inside the G90 reinforced the feeling when first buckling in and hitting the throttle, the sensation that this is a special car designed to do it all. Want to hit 70mph in a flash? This powerful four-door sedan accelerates so quickly, quietly and smoothly that you’re booking down the highway without a blink. In fact, you may realize you’re driving 90mph with such ease that watching the speedometer is definitely advised, even if the speed limit is 75mph! The car’s all-wheel drive was obvious during the torrential rainstorm we ran into in the mountains, by actually detecting the slippery conditions and controlling the driving force. From our point of view in the driver’s seat, it gripped the road beautifully, with nary a slip nor slide. The windshield wipers are also intuitive, for when set in auto mode, they know just how much precipitation is falling and adjust accordingly. That power comes from the car’s 3.5L V6 that combines with a 48V e-Supercharger that puts out 409 horsepower, using an 8-speed automatic transmission. THE ADVENTURE AND SERENITY OF SRI LANKA AND THE MALDIVES

’m not the kind of traveler who rearranges her life to lounge on the beach. When the opportunity arose to travel to the Maldives, I wondered if the 20 travel hours were worth it. Well, it’s definitely worth it, but I learned there’s also a fantastic travel opportunity that is often overlooked.
If you’re game to travel that far, make the most of it by spending a few days in Sri Lanka before heading to the Maldives. It’s a quick two-hour flight from Sri Lanka to the Malé airport in the Republic of Maldives, and I’m eternally grateful that I could experience both destinations. Also, I’m admittedly feeling wholly satisfied by its efficiency, though most of the credit belongs to Sun Siyam Resorts. EXPERIENCE SRI LANKA’S ELEPHANTS AND CULTURE As in many countries, driving in many areas of Sri Lanka feels like a hybrid of a celebratory parade and a scene from a Mission Impossible film—tuk-tuks zipping within inches of other cars, pickup trucks spilling over with market goods, and people speeding along, going to and from daily life obligations. It calms as the roads weave through the many forested areas, probably because elephants and monkeys cross the road with the same regularity as a common deer in the United States. In a word: exhilarating. It’s a five-hour drive from Colombo to the 5-star resort, 34-room Sun Siyam Pasikudah, but the hotel-arranged driver made a strategic coffee stop along the way. Once at the hotel, I spent a surprising amount of time chatting with staff—many of whom contributed to a recent renovation project. The General Manager, Arshed Refai, led a team of 25 skilled local artisans and laborers in transforming the property into a luxuriously sustainable DIY gem—complete with tables fashioned from felled trees, upcycled furnishings from the previous aesthetic, and exquisite hand-woven lampshades that loom like mammoth clouds overhead. The serene beachfront property boasts onsite snorkeling, a spa, and an elegant tea house. In terms of experiences, Sun Siyam Pasikudah’s offerings are beautifully raw. If you want to get a glimpse of a day in the local life, the hotel will take you to the market and drive you around to a few beaches to see where the fishermen are that day—no prearranged meet-up, script, or souvenir shop, just villagers hauling in the day’s catch.

Further offsite, guests can opt for gastronomy tours, whale watching, hiking and exploring other UNESCO sites, and excursions centered on the country’s Buddhist culture. I had my heart set on the Minneriya Safari outing in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and was surprised by the ease with which we could find and see elephants.

As far as insider’s tips, I suggest chatting with the breakfast staff to have them get you set up with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast of Hoppers—wispy pancake cups with coconut sambol and curry. TWO HOURS AWAY: THE MALDIVES AWAIT Sun Siyam includes six properties—all but Pasikudah are located in The Maldives. Hop on one of the daily two-hour flights from Colombo to Malé, and you’ll find yourself in a second paradise. From Siyam World, which boasts the largest Floating Water Park in the Indian Ocean, to the all-inclusive Sun Siyam Iru Veli, each Sun Siyam property is on private islands—all Maldivian-owned. Of the three Maldives’ properties I visited, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, located in the Noonu Atoll, seemed to best capture my travel style, blending adventure, culture, and relaxation in a grand yet approachable style. I love that the entire 52-acre island is framed by velvety white beaches, so it’s common for guests to walk around the entire island. There are 12 styles of villas and retreats, but I highly recommend one of the Deluxe Beach Villas with Pool. The circular thatched roof villa is as gorgeous as it is enormous, with an outdoor, double shower open-air bathroom, complete with a canopy bed and hot tub. The terrace and garden area include a large plunge pool plus an oversized canopy gazebo along the private beach path. It offers the highest level of privacy, with a private path leading to the beach.

Among the joys readily available on the island, the plump and oh-so-stunning island cats can be seen basking in the sun or napping in the shade. Many island resorts benefit from having cats around to balance small critter populations, and though these cats provide this service, it’d be easy to assume they’re show cats. Their pristine, shiny coats and royal personas directly result from the extraordinary lengths the resort goes to in feeding and caring for the feline residents. So much so that these cats are regularly transported by boat for veterinary checkups. Though the weather during my stay was unfortunate—intense winds and less-than-stellar vacation forecasts, my stay at Iru Fushi was anchored by the property’s award-winning spa, The Spa By Thalgo. The spa itself is surrounded by water, so a river rock-studded pathway leads guests to the treatment areas. After my massage, I enjoyed a private hydrotherapy pool area and freshly brewed tea. I was managing a health challenge at the time, so I also met with the resort’s Ayurvedic doctor, who spent an hour chatting with me and making short- and long-term recommendations. Much of his guidance I follow to this day, a priceless souvenir.

Of the eight dining options, the fine French dining at Flavours was an absolute standout. It’s at the end of a long pier, dappled with guiding lights on either side. The indoor dining space is chic and quiet, while the outside tables offer views of the many fish swimming in the water, which seems to sparkle a bit in the reflection of the evening light. Though the property has plenty of casual spots, Flavours showcases creative decadence. Those looking to take a break from beach-bound relaxation can take classes like traditional Maldivian cooking, weaving or coconut-based crafts, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, jet skiing, catamaran sailing, or romantic picnic excursions to nearby islands. Looking for a novel adrenaline boost? Consider the Jet Car Ride—a two-seater powered boat hybrid that looks like a sports car skimming across the turquoise waters. A few in-the-know tips can help you make the most of your visit. Be sure to review the extensive pillow menu when you arrive. The hotel will happily deliver a few options—from cassia or buckwheat filling to hypoallergenic and snore-reducing pillows. And for the cat lovers, ask your butler to stock your room with creamers, which the island cats adore.

UTAH’S WINTER WONDERLAND SKI, SNOWBOARD AND HAVE A BLAST By Jenny Peters

alt Lake City is having a moment, as this once quiet, extremely conservative Mormondominated town has transformed into a much more welcoming place to those who do not follow that religion. These days it’s completely changed from when I started visiting in the winter (both for skiing and for the Sundance Film Festival) back in the 1990s, when finding even a glass of wine with dinner was the impossible dream.
Today SLC has acknowledged that visitors and locals alike are interested in a craft cocktail before dinner and even a glass of wine, too, which means that the nightlife scene is jumping year-round, complete with cool bars, restaurants serving up international tastes and elegant hotels with a focus on culinary delights (and wellness, too). This change to the city that also serves as Utah’s state capital and the jumping-off place for adventure in the rugged Wasatch Mountains nearby is a welcome one – and one worth making sure to stop and stay a while before or after hitting the powder.

START (OR FINISH) YOUR VACATION WITH SAVORING SALT LAKE If you’re champing at the bit to hit the powder up in the Wasatch, then go straight to Park City or Deer Valley to get in your runs (and read more on that below). But be sure to pause and check out the airport’s new terminal as you travel, which has transformed SLC into a scenic center, with huge glass walls opening out to incredible views of the mountains. We really recommend staying for a few days in the city, perhaps after all your athletic exertion on the slopes, or ahead of to do some dining and decompressing beforehand. The Grand America Hotel is the place to make home base, the 5-star hotel built to accommodate visitors to the 2002 Winter Olympics that’s been going strong ever since. THE NOBEL PRIZE TOUR A NOVEL WAY TO SEE STOCKHOLM By Anne Raso

tockholm offers a captivating journey into the world of Alfred Nobel, blending history, culture, and the prestige of the Nobel Prize. From Nobel’s restored home and the iconic banquet halls to immersive museums and elegant Swedish dining, this compact itinerary reveals the traditions, stories, and brilliance behind the world’s most honored awards—making it a uniquely enriching long-weekend escape. THE NOBEL PRIZE BANQUET & BEGINNING THE JOURNEY The legendary Nobel Prize banquet takes place on December 10th (the “deathaversary” of Alfred Nobel). It’s held in Stockholm Town Hall’s prestigious Blue Room with a lot of pomp and circumstance--including a grand entrance on a long marble staircase by formally dressed award recipients, professors, gifted students and even royalty. I recently took the rather novel Nobel Prize tour of Stockholm and it’s quite easy for you to plan one for yourself as all sites are close together with the exception of Alfred Nobel’s house up in Karlskoga, Varmland. (Being a bit of a snowbird, Nobel spent the cold half of year in San Remo where he died and the warm half in Karlskoga). This unique tour is perfect for a three or four day trip and it will have you saying, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” VISITING BJÖRKBORN MANOR: NOBEL’S HOME You can take a 3.5 hour bus trip to Nobel’s house called Björkborn Manor straight from Arlanda Airport’s bus station in Terminal 4 (and it will be super easy to get from Karlskoga to central Stockholm by train later). At Björkborn Manor, there is an actor portraying Nobel who talks to guests, telling them how he accidentally invented dynamite (his most famous patent and biggest moneymaker that made him arguably the richest man in the world). Despite the fact that the house has been used as offices in recent years, it has been restored back to pretty much how it looked when Nobel lived there, and you can see his home office complete with original desk, brass bed, bookcases and more. There are all sorts of bric a brac on display from the home as well as old letters and legal documents. JANUARY 2026 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 33
STAYING IN KARLSKOGA While in Karlskoga, you will find reasonably priced lodgings that are actually quite posh. I suggest Hotell Grönfeltsgården which is beautifully situated by Lake Möckeln. The hotel consists of two historic wooden buildings from the 1880s and offers a total of 16 recently renovated rooms with views of the water or the park. While in Karlskoga, be sure to go to the posh Bofors Hotel to enjoy and elegant and authentically Swedish dinner dinner. The relaxing country club vibe has made this a place where the elite mix with the locals (the Shah Of Iran and Swedish royalty have stayed at Bofors). TRAVELING TO STOCKHOLM When you are ready to board the train to Stockholm, you will notice that there are assigned cushy seats and that the cars are clean, well run and safe. Maybe the Metro North execs could take a few pointers from a train ride in Sweden, LOL! You can easily get around by bus or subway in Stockholm and the cavern like Central Station is full of art and artifacts including columns from regal old buildings. GRAND HOTEL: A HUB FOR LAUREATES Near to Central Station is the Grand Hotel where the majority of out of town Nobel Prize winners and their guests stay. The awards banquet was held for many years in the hotel’s most famous room called Spegelsalen, the Hall of Mirrors. It boosts highly detailed ceiling paintings that look like they were done yesterday, not in 1899. If you look closely, there is a nod to New York City via a section of ceiling art depicting the still unknown model for the Statue Of Liberty sitting down on a couch, torch in hand, with Lady Liberty as we know her shown in the distance. ALTERNATIVE LODGING & BREAKFAST TRADITIONS The Grand Hotel has the best people watching in town and paparazzi “stockades” are often seen outside. (This is the Rolling Stones’ go-to hotel when performing in Stockholm.) It can be tough to get a room here especially around the time of the Nobel Awards banquet so as an option, try the elegant nearby family run Hotel Kungstradgarden (“the king’s garden”) which was originally built for Countess Eva Bielk back in 1764. All Stockholm hotels both grand and quaint include a buffet style breakfast that includes local favorites like kanelbullar—large cinnamon and cardamom rolls. THE NOBEL FOUNDATION While in town it is a must to visit the Nobel Foundation has ultimate responsibility for fulfilling the intentions in Alfred Nobel’s will. It is full of fascinating Nobel Prize artifacts and correspondence but the really amazing opportunity is getting to see the albums that have notes handwritten by every Nobel Prize winner, even Bob Dylan and Barack Obama. WHERE TO DINE IN STOCKHOLM Take a lunch or dinner break at the reasonable and delicious The Fishery & The Farm Family, offering seafood in large portions caught in local waters. Another option that is a bit pricier is Lux Dag för Dag (Day by Day). Henrik Norström, creative leader and his team take the term “farm to table” very seriously. 34 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JANUARY 2026
Scandinavian flavors and local produce are the main focus. The cozy atmosphere and secluded location with Lake Mälaren nearby make it a super romantic spot. CITY HALL & THE NOBEL BANQUET HALLS Be sure to take a guided tour of Stockholm City Hall with its famous spire featuring three golden crowns (this is one of the most famous silhouettes in the Stockholm cityscape). City Hall is one of the country’s leading examples of national romanticism in architecture. As previously mentioned the annual Nobel Prize banquet is in the building’s Blue Hall and afterwards; Nobel Prize laureates, royalties, and guests go upstairs to dance in Gyllene Salen, the Golden Hall, with its 18 million gold mosaic tiles. DINE LIKE A LAUREATE AT STADSHUSKÄLLAREN On the tail end of City Hall is the popular restaurant Stadshuskällaren, which opened its doors in 1922, carrying a strong tradition of gastronomy and dining culture. It is the only place in the world where you can enjoy any Nobel menu from history, served on the official Nobel porcelain. Just go to nobelprize.org, look at the banquet menus listed from over the years, and choose one. Make a res and give the resto your choice of year. Dinner will be served to you in a private room that usually houses the overflow guests from the Nobel Prize banquet; you will have to buy a table for ten whether you have ten guests or not. CAFÉ WINTERVIKEN: NOBEL’S WORKSHOP TURNED EATERY It’s a must to have lunch at Café Winterviken located in Nobel’s old workshop and dynamite factory built in 1891. Since 2008, Winterviken is run by Erika Michael and Markus Aujalay who were in charge of the menu at the Nobel Prize banquet in 2008. Have one of the staff take you outside to the secret tunnels were dynamite was detonated as part of quality control. FIKA AT MAGNUS JOHANSSON BAGERI & KONDITORI For a “Fika” (the Swedish term for coffee break), visit Magnus Johansson’s famous bakery. The affable pastry chef has made dessert for the Nobel banquet a total of 11 times, which makes him the current record holder! At his café and bakery in Hammarby Sjöstad called Magnus Johansson Bageri & Konditori, you’ll get a taste of his pastries, cakes, cookies, bread and the aforementioned buns. A few weeks before Christmas each year, Johansson makes a special saffron bun that is unforgettable but you can enjoy the classic cinnamon and cardamom ones year round. CREATE YOUR OWN NOBEL-INSPIRED FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS Finally, if your Nobel Prize mania accelerates to the point where you want to live out every part of the Nobel banquet for yourself, you can actually make your own floral arrangements with the people who created the centerpieces for the 2024 banquet. The florist Per Benjamin is in charge and works with many other florists; one of them is Linda Corell. You can visit her studio at Astha (a multifunctional creative gallery and vintage clothing shop) and she will lead you in making arrangements similar to those on the Nobel Prize banquet tables. h, Las Vegas – the dazzling lights, the excitement of the play on the casino floor, the secrets that remain in Vegas, and the stunning beauty of its natural treasures. Wait – what’s that? Stunning natural beauty? Isn’t Las Vegas in the middle of the desert? That may be, but a number of beautiful, scenic parks are within easy driving distance of Sin City. We recently spent five days in Las Vegas avoiding The Strip and visiting two gorgeous natural parks and a few of the city’s noteworthy museums. “OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD” NATURAL BEAUTY Our first visit was to Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada’s oldest and largest state park. It didn’t take long after entering the park to know the reason for its name. Striking red sandstone formations with amazing color variations present an other-worldly landscape. The park has a variety of scenic drives that make it very easy for those not interested in hitting the trails to experience and appreciate the park’s beauty up close. Valley of Fire State Park is 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas. We decided to hike two of the park’s easy to moderate trails and would highly recommend them. The White Domes hike takes you to an area of sandstone formations with brilliant contrasting colors. The hike took us down a gorge with towering brilliant rock formations on both sides and then to a cool slot canyon. The Fire Wave Trail leads to a stunning rock formation - Fire Wave. Brilliant red sandstone deposits in swirling formations resembling rivers – or red waves – are frozen in time. In addition to colorful rock formations, the park also has a number of 3,000-year-old petroglyphs and exhibits of petrified wood.
CRIMSON GLORY RISING FROM THE DESERT The second park we visited was Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The canyon is aptly-named because of the crimson colored rock formations that rise almost magically from the arid floor of the desert. The park has excellent hiking trails, outstanding rock-climbing areas, and a visitor-friendly 13-mile scenic drive. Just like the Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon is accessible for all visitors to enjoy the park’s stunning rock formations from the scenic drive stops. It was amazing that these serene views are only 15 miles from the frenetic scene of The Strip.

A MUSEUM WITH “CONNECTIONS” Another way to experience Las Vegas in a unique way is to visit some of the museums that take a peek into the past. One we strongly recommend is The Mob Museum, located in a former courthouse just minutes from Fremont Street. Obviously the story of the mob and its influence has a major chapter in Las Vegas, and The Mob Museum provides a fascinating history of the mob’s presence in Sin City. But the Mob Museum also presents an indepth study of the origins of organized crime and its spread throughout major U.S. cities. Exhibits include a number of authentic artifacts including the actual wall of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. After spending several hours viewing the museum’s exhibits, we headed to The Underground – a Prohibition-era exhibit with a working distillery and a speakeasy. Surrounded by artifacts from the 1920’s, we enjoyed Prohibition-era craft cocktails. Be sure to check out the new Starlight Plaza outdoor event space, that is hosting many unique events.
A SIGN OF THE TIMES One Las Vegas myth is that people often come to town looking for a sign. Well, you can find more than 250 of them at The Neon Museum. The guided tour of the museum’s outdoor exhibit space – The Boneyard – is part history and part art. The neon signs, some of which have been fully restored, are rescued signs and architectural landmarks from some of the city’s most celebrated properties dating from the 1930’s to the present day. Since 28 of these signs are electrified, it is best to visit this museum at night. During your tour you will hear some quirky stories about who created each sign, what inspired it, where and when it was made, and how it fits into the development of Las Vegas and the city’s rich history. In addition to The Boneyard, the museum includes The North Gallery, which contains approximately 115 additional signs and is also the site of the program “Brilliant! Jackpot!” The museum’s visitor center is cleverly housed in the former La Concha Motel lobby. The Neon Museum also maintains a collection of 16 public art installations downtown. The first installation was the Hacienda Horse and Rider on Fremont St. Other signs include Binion’s Horseshoe, The Silver Slipper, the Lucky Cuss Motel, and others. A BLAST OF A MUSEUM The final museum that intrigued us was the National Atomic Testing Museum. Established in 1951 the Nevada Test Site was the site of the Cold War’s most unnerving practice – the detonation and recording of the destructive effects of America’s nuclear bombs. Through a variety of exhibits and a wealth of artifacts, the museum tells the story of America’s nuclear weapons testing program at the Nevada Test Site. The museum presents a sometimes chilling but fascinating history of the development and testing of America’s nuclear arsenal. One exhibit that was especially immersive was the simulation of an above-ground nuclear test. As sobering as the history of nuclear testing is, there is a kind of strange humor in the city’s fascination with the bomb testing. Las Vegas actually took to calling itself “Atomic City, U.S.A.” People in Las Vegas would hold “bomb parties” on the roofs of hotels hoping to catch a view of the bomb’s flash and resulting mushroom cloud. The Pop Culture exhibit illustrates this 1950’s fascination with the bomb. “Atomic Odyssey” opened in January and is the museum’s first fully hands-on exhibit. There are a number of rotating exhibits as well. Presently, “The Manhattan Project – Challenges and Consequences” and “Bomb without the Boom” are showcased. Las Vegas – what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas – right? Well, maybe some of your enjoyable experiences off The Strip will accompany you home.

I usually dread Thanksgiving and Christmas, since my father passed away during the holiday season a few years ago. But this year is even more difficult because I’ve been disconnected with my younger daughter. The entire year has been hard since we stopped talking in the spring but not having her around for any of the holiday celebrations makes me feel incredibly down and hopeless things will ever get resolved. It’s not my doing. I want a relationship with her and have told her this many times, but she keeps saying she wants space and time. There seems to be nothing I can do. Is there any advice you may be able to share? Thank you, Down and Out Dear Down and Out, I’m deeply sorry to hear about your circumstances. I am sure not having your daughter around during the holidays, in addition to the normal day-to-day, is very painful. Without knowing the reasons behind your relationship rupture, it’s difficult for me to offer any sound advice other than the mindset that you should focus on what brings your joy, who offers you support and who makes you feel safe and loved. I’m not suggesting you forget about your daughter, but it seems as though you’ve shared that you want to reconnect, and she is asking for her space. So, as hard as it may be, you need to honor her wishes and provide her with that space and hold onto the hope that when she is ready, she will return.
In the meantime, focusing on yourself and those who are in your life fully now with your attention, thoughts, and time will safeguard you from slipping deeper into despair. If you don’t speak or see anyone on a regular basis, reach out to an old friend, connect with a family member you have fond feelings for and seek the support of a mental health expert who will be able to better work with you on reframing your negative thoughts and focus on setting up healthy daily goals to meet in order to establish a routine that is suited to provide safety and serenity during a time that sounds especially turbulent. Her visit culminated on November 14, 2025, when she led a “Moment of Silence for Global Peace” at the United Nations WEDO Summit, offering a guided meditation to delegates from around the world. This extraordinary appearance continued Yogmata’s long-standing relationship with the United Nations, where she has previously spoken on International Yoga Day and conducted meditations dedicated to global harmony. There, from 10:05 a.m. to 10:13 a.m., she led delegates in a meditation for peace—eight minutes of global stillness amid a world often defined by turbulence. Her participation reflected decades of dedication: since 1991, she has performed Public Samadhi 18 times in India, an exceedingly rare demonstration recognized as evidence of enlightenment. Her teachings and global travels continue to inspire audiences seeking purposeful, grounded, and spiritually enriched lives. A LIFE DEVOTED TO ENLIGHTENMENT Born in Yamanashi, Japan in 1945, Yogmata began studying yoga and meditation as a teenager, eventually becoming a widely respected instructor. Her path transformed at age 39 when she met Pilot Babaji, a revered Himalayan master who later trained her in the mountains. Through this journey, she achieved Samadhi, the supreme state of yogic consciousness. Today, she is not only a spiritual teacher but also an acclaimed author with more than one million books sold worldwide, and a frequent presence at global peace events—including esteemed appearances at the United Nations in 2016 and 2017. he Lotus Room is the theater district’s newest modern Asian dining experience (it just opened in September to rave reviews on Yelp and other consumer dining apps). The restaurant blends contemporary Asian cuisine with sophisticated design, and believe it or not, a speakeasy that you are invited to go into after your meal is complete. You get a password to enter the dark, candlelit speakeasy from your server and—get this—you enter through a real confessional! There are also live jazz and electro performances nightly on the small stage in front of the main dining room. The Lotus Room was founded by Josh Kessler, a hospitality maverick known for immersive, high-design venues; the kitchen is helmed by Executive Chef John Creger, a Baltimore native with over 25 years of experience. Creger cut his teeth working under culinary superstars like Bobby Flay, Terrance Brennan, and David Burke, and has also worked in assorted Michelin-level kitchens. This friendly executive chef has also appeared on the Food Network and been a guest chef at the James Beard House’s private dinners. LIGHTER STARTERS The Lotus Room has plates big enough for sharing, and the staff is accommodating. There are numerous food options for vegans and pescatarians. My guest and I enjoyed the lighter starters, including the Seaweed Salad with mizuna, Fuji apple, and spiced walnuts and the Japanese Eggplant Dip featuring smoked eggplant, black sesame, sweet soy, and rice crackers. This stylish midtown eatery actually has a totally stellar list of items for the veggie crowd. A standout option that my guest and I devoured was the Agedashi Cauliflower, which is lightly tempura-fried then poached in dashi and served with kimchi aioli and togarashi. We also enjoyed the Stir-Fried Snap Peas & Lotus Root, dressed in a spicy ginger-scallion sauce with peanuts and cilantro for crunch and heat. The Miso-Roasted Carrots feature smoked labneh, a yuzukosho dressing, and puffed rice, and for those who like more boldly flavored vegetarian dishes, there is the Charred Cabbage with tobanjan broth, chili, crispy shallots, and black garlic oil. The Spicy Sesame Cucumber is refreshing, light and crunchy. They have arguably the most popular catfish entree in the entire city which is simply called Crispy Catfish—it’s locally caught catfish grilled with a sauce consisting of chili, cilantro, Szechuan pepper and red miso. SHAREABLE SHOWSTOPPERS Other shareable showstoppers that guests have been coming back for are Wagyu Skewers, which is simply chunks of ultratender beef cooked with marinated with soy sauce, brown sugar, Gochujang and black garlic aioli and sided with baked sweet potatoes. The turmeric seasoned Chicken Satay sided with a spicy peanut sauce and cucumber vinegar was my first choice from the menu when visiting The Lotus Room and it was super juicy! I almost ordered a second helping but I had to leave room for more food. I did taste my guest’s Wagyu Skewers, though—and I quickly learned why he wanted to keep them all to himself! You usually don’t find veal in Asian cooking but the cutting edge chefs at The Lotus Room have conjured up the delicious Veal Katsu, which is panko coated and cooked with Japanese BBQ sauce, bok choy and enoki mushrooms. 48 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JANUARY 2026
We perused Yelp for other favorites with regular diners and we saw that people love the Toro Tacos made with fatty tuna, avocado mousse, yuzu aioli, and crispy wontons, Salmon Carpaccio dressed in sesame and chives with a touch of yuzu. The Prawn Toast, which features a prawn mousse, ikura (fish roe), spicy mustard, and hoisin-plum sauce, is often recommended by the servers. BRING ON THE BLACK TRUFFLE LOBSTER DUMPLINGS If you are a lover of anything with lobster, try the Black Truffle Lobster Dumplings; they feature butter-poached lobster wrapped in delicate dumpling dough, coated in a shiny black truffle soy butter emulsion, and topped with a bright, citrusy yuzu ponzu. You get five dumplings in one serving and they strike a beautiful balance of rich umami, silky sweetness from the lobster, and a refreshing pop from the yuzu. It’s one of The Lotus Room’s signature dishes and a great choice if you’re looking to start with something indulgent, refined and sophisticated (it will undoubtedly impress your date, LOL). What about dessert? The Lotus Room doesn’t have a large, traditional dessert menu—usually, guests can pick from Black Sesame Gelato, a Green Tea Crepe Cake, or Pandan Donuts. These desserts reflect the restaurant’s modern Asian aesthetic: the Black Sesame Gelato brings a nutty, slightly savory-sweet flavor; the Green Tea Crepe Cake is delicate and layered; and the Pandan Donuts add a tropical, aromatic twist. Desserts are subject to change, so be sure to discuss the night’s options with your server. Most recently, Ube Cheesecake (which is very purple) has been added to the menu and has become a fan favorite in no time! I shared both the Pandan Donuts and the bright green Green Tea Crepe Cake with my guest and both tasted freshly baked but I would say that the donuts provided a much deeper flavor profile—the taste is slightly grassy and floral, with a sweet, nutty edge and a hint of vanilla. There’s also a whisper of coconut in there. Who is The Lotus Room’s typical clientele? This progressive Asian eatery tends to attract a chic, experience-driven crowd — people who come not just for the food, but for a complete night out that includes live music and drinks at the aforementioned speakeasy area of the restaurant. The Lotus Room is especially appealing to dinner-and-entertainment seekers, creative professionals, theatergoers, and social influencers who appreciate lively vibes as much as unusual cuisine. We asked Josh Kessler why he chose the heart of the Theater District for the location of The Lotus Room, and he basically stated that the vibrant neighborhood aligns perfectly with The Lotus Room’s immersive, performance-driven concept. He also remarked that being in Midtown also means very high foot traffic, especially from theatergoers, tourists, and affluent diners, which supports both the dining and “entertainment venue” model. The Lotus Room is actually a quiet and romantic setting if you go when a band is not onstage. The dramatic, free-form lighting, retro wall hangings and bright floral arrangements almost make the main dining room seem like a SoHo art gallery that only the hippest people know about. There is a no rush atmosphere at The Lotus Room despite being in the busiest part of Manhattan; be sure to ask to see the exotic cocktail and artisanal sake menus for drink experiences that you cannot get anywhere else in town. THE NEXT CHAPTERS TO ONGOING SAGAS A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS HBO This story of the Seven Kingdoms takes place 100 years before “Game of Thrones,” focusing on a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall. Based on three novellas written by George R. R. Martin, it’s a rousing tale of a wouldbe knight (played by Irish actor Peter Claffey) and his young squire, with numerous references to powerful places and families that GOT fans already know. Dexter Sol Anseli costars as Egg, the boy squire, along with Finn Bennett, Henry Ashton and Sam Spruell. STAR TREK: STAR FLEET ACADEMY Paramount+ Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti chew up the scenery with glee in this new “Star Trek” series that centers around the academy that trains cadets from across the galaxies to be part of the elite Star Fleet. They are the old school, with plenty of young newcomers along for the effects-laden sci-fi ride, including Bella Shepard, Sandro Rosta and Kerrice Brooks. Story lines follow the trainees as they navigate the school, with Giamatti popping in to threaten the learning sessions.
WONDER MAN Disney+ You know Yahya Abdul-Mateen II from his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Manta in the “Aquaman” films with Jason Momoa as well as from the “Watchmen” DC Comics TV series. So it’s no surprise that he’s now stepping into “Wonder Man,” the newest MCU series. What’s surprising is that this show blends reality with fantasy, as an aspiring actor auditions for the role of a superhero and then ends up with superpowers of his own. Ben Kingsley costars, along with Lauren Glazier and Byron Bowers.
SPIES AMONG US THE NIGHT MANAGER Prime Video It’s been ten years since Tom Hiddleston stepped into the role of Jonathan Pine, the hotel night manager who also happened to work for British intelligence, for “The Night Manager,” a limited series that was nominated for 12 Emmy Awards (and won two). Based on a John le Carré novel, it also starred Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki and Olivia Colman in acclaimed roles and Colman returns with Hiddleston in this second season, which begins years after the first story concluded. This plot isn’t one of le Carré’s genius works, so expect something totally new in this reboot. PONIES Peacock From David Iserson of “Mr. Robot” fame and Susanna Fogel, who created “The Flight Attendant” comes this new spy series set in 1970s Moscow. Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson star as American Embassy workers whose husbands are mysteriously murdered, leading them to joining the CIA to discover just what happened. Intrigue, danger and a peek into just what the 70s were like make this new series one to definitely check out.

MARGORIE PRIME AT THE HAYS THEATER

arjorie Prime” ten years ago at Playwrights Horizon. I thought the show was quite economical and interesting because the allure of AI was in the future. Fast forward to 2025 and AI is here and real. Jordan Harrison’s play has now made its way to The Hayes Theater on Broadway and it has a great cast to help his vision with AI, death and longing
“Marjorie Prime” has the same director as ten years ago (Anne Kaufman), the main star today is June Squibb (it was Lois Smith at Playwrights). Squibb is very effective in her role as Marjorie. She is both comedic and pensive, her delivery most times are precious. Cynthia Nixon too is at the top of her game as a somewhat bitter woman who questions her own mortality as a middle aged woman. Her husband, Jon (Danny Burnstein) is a warms, carrying man who helped Marjorie interact with her dead husband, Walter (Christopher Lowell) via computer. We learn about about Walter’s and Marjorie’s life together as information is fed into the prime. The prime learns more and more about Walter as the play goes on and at times the play gives us only little tid bits of warmth and feeling. The writing never hits the cords that it should and that left me wanting more from this show. The direction never pulls at our emotional cords as it should have. Lee Jellinek’s scenic design with a 70’s style green colored set has sharp angels, the sharpness may well signify the cut and dry life of all four characters. Trapped in what could have beens, Jon seems like the only one content of the four. Happy in his marriage, his life, he goes about life wanting to help, to fit in with the family. Ben Stanton’s lighting was without question the most interesting part of the evening. He captures the many moods that this show has. He is deft in the way he spreads the field when needed under the mostly romantic lighting. Ms De La Rosa’s costumes are well done especially on Nixon’s character. Tess is a woman of means, her style is always eye catching every-time she steps on stage. “Marjorie Prime” is not a show for everyone, the subject matter may not please the passive theater goer. The plot is not an ordinary one and the occasional audience member may just not be interested in its writing. STRENGTHENING A LIFELINE FOR EAST END ANIMALS The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF), one of the region’s most vital resources for animal care and rescue, has embarked on an essential modernization effort aimed at securing the shelter’s long-term sustainability. These critical repairs and environmental upgrades will allow SASF to continue its mission as an open-admission, no-kill refuge— one that accepts every animal in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or background. A UNIQUE COMMITMENT TO OPEN ADMISSION Unlike most shelters, SASF upholds an open-admission promise that makes it a rare and indispensable safety net for both animals and the East End residents who rely on its services. While the Town of Southampton owns the building, SASF manages all operations and maintenance, a responsibility made increasingly urgent as the facility—built more than 26 years ago—faces aging infrastructure and new environmental mandates. Recognizing these challenges, the Foundation has launched a comprehensive upgrade program that modernizes the building’s systems and brings it into compliance with current environmental standards. TEMPORARY RELOCATION TO ENSURE CONTINUITY OF CARE To maintain operations during construction, SASF has temporarily relocated its animals and staff. Cats available for adoption are now housed at a Southampton property, while dogs are being cared for in temporary kennels on-site and at a Westhampton location. Work began October 1, 2025, and is projected to be completed by Spring 2026, with an expected out-of-pocket cost exceeding $350,000 for the Foundation.

A NEW MODEL FOR EQUAL EDUCATION HOW TUITION-FREE LEARNING COULD RESHAPE HIGHER EDUCATION WORLDWIDE

s federal funding cuts threaten minority-serving institutions nationwide, access to higher education is once again under scrutiny. One visionary educator believes the solution lies in redefining education as a universal right—offering a tuition-free, accredited model that has already transformed hundreds of thousands of lives globally. THE FUNDING GAP WIDENS Last fall, New York City minority college students— and others across the country—faced a major blow. The U.S. Department of Education made the pivotal decision to terminate discretionary federal grant funding for several minority-serving institutions under the notion that the programs were discriminatory and unconstitutional, citing concerns that eligibility restrictions were based on race or ethnicity. Ultimately, the department cut $350 million in discretionary funds that supported these populations with academic support and other resources. According to The City University of New York, which serves most citywide students, students of color make up 76 percent of the student body. As we enter the New Year, many are still searching for alternative ways to make up the deficit. But one man says he has the answer—not just for the oftenunequal playing field of higher education in the United States, but across the world. EDUCATION AS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE University of the People Founder and President Shai Reshef says he sees education as a right, not a privilege, and created his tuitionfree educational model to provide accredited higher learning opportunities to the masses. His reach is vast, positively impacting hundreds of thousands of people seeking a new lease on life and opportunities they otherwise could only have dreamed about. His school—the world’s first nonprofit online university—serves close to 500 New York City students, and that number continues to grow. Beyond the city, University of the People educates more than 170,000 students globally, spanning over 200 countries, while supporting refugees, undocumented individuals, and anyone facing financial hardship. Reshef, who has spent more than twenty years as a global educational leader, has seen firsthand what educational inequities look like and understands how invaluable education is for prosperity, trauma prevention, mental health stability, and—most importantly—breaking cycles of poverty. “When you educate one person, you can change a life,” says Reshef, who has been awarded the Yidan Prize for Educational Development, often referred to as the Nobel Prize for Education. “When you educate many, you can change the world.”

THE COST CRISIS IN NEW YORK CITY The current state of higher education in New York City is underwhelming. Data shows the number of students able to attend college remains bleak. A 2024 survey revealed that nearly 90 percent of New York City high school graduates say they cannot afford to pay for college. More than 30 percent of city students currently enrolled in college are considering dropping out due to cost, while over 65 percent report being financially underwater. Additionally, one in four students experiences significant financial stress due to student loan debt—demonstrating that cost issues extend well beyond graduation. A GLOBAL VISION FOR CHANGE Reshef plans to tackle this crisis one semester at a time. He is moving full steam ahead with a mission to disrupt educational inequality at its core. With the support of companies like IBM and Coca-Cola, he aspires to reach 35,000 refugees by 2030, with the broader goal of serving all underserved populations before his work is done. “The tuition-free education model has the ability to disrupt traditional education over the next ten years,” says Reshef. “By removing financial barriers, it democratizes access to education and opens doors for underserved populations worldwide.”
