ISSUE 10 Beyond The Game There are many ways to discover what golf can mean. For some, it becomes a lifelong passion. For others, it offers a new beginning, a community, or even a purpose that reaches far beyond the fairways.
Gauthier Alessandri Editor & Golf Coach
Sachin Sagar Photographer & Director
For Laura Siem, Mauritius became all of these things at once. Born in Berlin to Polish parents, she found on the island the home she had long dreamed of, but also the setting for a deeply personal new chapter. Following her experience with breast cancer, she chose to turn her connection with golf into something bigger: through the Siem Together Foundation and the AfrAsia Bank Charity Classic Swing, she is using the sport to raise awareness, improve access to screening and support women across Mauritius. Her story is a powerful reminder that golf is not always about the score. Sometimes, it is about what we choose to do with the opportunities the game gives us—and the people it brings into our lives. Josette Marchal has found her own answer in golf. At a time when many people wonder what comes next when professional life comes to an end, she has found no shortage of reasons to keep going: a club, a little white ball and an endless succession of courses to discover. For Josette, golf is far more than a pastime. It is a passion, a school of life, a source of friendship and, above all, a reason to remain curious, active and connected. Her story is a celebration of the freedom that comes when there is always another fairway ahead. And then there is Grant Labuschagne, whose story reminds us that sometimes the most exciting chapters are still to be written. From a seven-year-old boy who simply loved playing the game to the winner of the 2026 MCB Indian Ocean Open, the young South African’s journey is gathering remarkable momentum. In Mauritius, he showed that he could compete alongside professionals and gave us a glimpse of what may lie ahead. Three very different journeys, but one common thread: golf has the power to become much more than a sport. It can give us a home, a purpose, a community or a future. It can accompany us through change, keep us moving when life enters a new phase, and open doors we never expected to walk through. Perhaps that is the enduring appeal of the game. The courses may be measured in metres and the rounds in strokes, but what we take away from them is rarely measured on a scorecard. Inside this issue, we also turn our attention to the people and initiatives shaping the business of golf. Discover our BRGS Golf CEO Master feature, exploring leadership, vision and the people driving the industry forward, alongside our Axys Golf feature, taking a closer look at the company, its ambitions and its place in the evolving golf landscape. Because whether it is played for passion, purpose or business, golf continues to tell stories worth following.

Black River Golf Club The Black River Golf Club (BRGC) has its roots in the Black River Golf Association (BRGA), founded by Rajen Ramlackhan and registered on 2 June 1994. Following the introduction of the Sports Act 2016, the Association’s name was no longer compliant with the new legal requirements. A new club, Black River Golf Club (BRGC), was therefore founded by Dev Hurpaul and officially registered on 9 February 2022. Today, BRGC brings together more than 120 members from across Mauritius’s various sports regions. The Club warmly welcomes golfers of all ages and abilities, from newcomers to experienced players. BRGC organises at least four golf competitions each year at different courses around Mauritius, in partnership with golf venues and valued sponsors. LUXCONSULT (Mtius) Ltd, a consulting engineering company, has been a key supporter of the Club, notably through the provision of prizes and contributions towards meal costs during competitions. The company has also been a regular sponsor of the Mauritius Golf Federation (MGF).

Born in Berlin to Polish parents, Laura Siem found in Mauritius both the island she had long dreamed of calling home and the setting for a new chapter. Following her own experience with breast cancer, she turned to golf to raise awareness, improve access to screening and support women across Mauritius through the Siem Together Foundation and the AfrAsia Bank Charity Classic Swing.
For Laura Siem, Mauritius represents far more than a beautiful island discovered through golf. It is where a long-held dream became reality, and where a deeply personal experience gave rise to a greater purpose. Through the Siem Together Foundation, she has transformed her passion for golf into a platform for breast cancer awareness, early detection and support, bringing together players, businesses, sponsors and communities to create tangible change across Mauritius. Born in Berlin to Polish parents, Laura spent around twen-
ty years growing up in Canada, followed by two decades in Germany, where she met her husband, professional golfer Marcel Siem, just as he earned his card on the DP World Tour. Golf and travel quickly became inseparable from their lives, taking them around the world. Mauritius was one of their Tour destinations. Later, when Marcel became an ambassador for Heritage Resorts & Golf, the island took on a much more personal significance. The couple began spending Christmas there every year, and what had once been one destination among many gradually became a place they felt profoundly connected to.
“I felt I had been given a second chance, and I didn’t want to keep postponing the things we had always dreamed about.” LAURA SIEM 19
20
21
They fell completely in love with the island. For years, they shared a dream of eventually living there, always attached to the reassuring promise of “one day.” Then Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer. The experience completely changed her perspective on life. Faced with the vulnerability and uncertainty of the disease, she realised she was no longer willing to postpone the things she and Marcel had always dreamed of. “I felt I had been given a second chance, and I didn’t want to keep postponing the things we had always dreamed about.” The couple consequently moved to Mauritius, turning that long-standing dream into reality. What had once been a place they loved visiting became their home and, in Laura’s words, the setting for a second chapter of her life. Cancer also changed the way she viewed time and priorities. Things
22
that once seemed overwhelmingly important could suddenly feel insignificant, while relationships and experiences became even more precious. Laura emerged determined to make the most of her time, continuing to enjoy golf, travel, laughter, friends and family—perhaps more than ever. But the experience also left her with a strong sense of responsibility. She had been fortunate to have access to excellent doctors, reliable information and a strong support system. She became acutely aware that many women did not have the same advantages. If her experience, knowledge and network could help improve access for others, she wanted to use them for something positive. Mauritius provided both the personal setting and the community through which that ambition could grow. Today, Laura considers the island home in every sense: it is where her family and friends are, and where she feels she can make a genuine difference.
23
24
25
26
Golf has been central to that journey. Mauritius has a relatively small golfing community, where relationships develop naturally. Through the sport, Laura met people who became friends, supporters and eventually partners of the Siem Together Foundation. Her relationship with golf has always been multifaceted. She loves playing and competing, but values just as much the people, laughter and social connection surrounding the game. “Today, golf has taken on another meaning for me. It has become a platform.” She realised that bringing people together around something they already enjoy could encourage them to care about something much larger. Golf therefore became not simply the setting for her philanthropic work, but the mechanism through which a community could be mobilised.
The Siem Together Foundation emerged directly from Laura’s experience of breast cancer. Having lived through the fear and uncertainty of the disease, she understood the crucial importance of early detection. When she looked at the situation facing many women in Mauritius, she knew that awareness alone was not enough. Her goal was practical: to improve access to screening and support women throughout the process when they needed it. Golf was the natural starting point. The AfrAsia Bank Charity Classic Swing became the first major expression of that vision, but what began as a golf tournament quickly grew into something much larger.
27
28
29
The Foundation has now opened its first breast cancer screening centre. A second has been ordered, a third is fully financed, and the organisation is working towards its fourth. The AfrAsia Bank Charity Classic Swing brings golfers, sponsors and partners together around the cause, while preserving the enjoyment of the game. Laura wants the event to feel alive— with friendship, music, fun and energy—rather than like a conventional fundraising occasion. “Breast cancer has already taken enough from people. I don’t believe everything surrounding the cause has to be sad.” That philosophy has resonated with the community. In 2025, the AfrAsia Bank Charity Classic Swing raised approximately Rs 3 million. In 2026, that figure reached Rs 5.3 million for Breast Cancer Care Mauritius. For Laura, however, the number matters because of what it makes possible. The first screening centre is a tangible result of that generosity, and women are already walking through its doors. Some 30
may have their cancer detected earlier because people chose to support the Foundation. “I can now point to an actual screening centre and say, ‘This is what you helped create.” Laura is clear that none of this could happen through one individual alone. Sponsors and corporate partners are essential— not only for financial support, but because they believe in what the Foundation is building and help create lasting impact. Her message to companies is simple: sponsorship should be viewed through the tangible difference a contribution can make. Companies can see where their support goes, visit screening centres, meet the women benefiting from the work and follow the progress.
31

34
She believes businesses have a genuine opportunity to use their resources and reach to strengthen the communities around them. When companies, charities and communities work together, they can achieve far more than any one of them could alone. That collaborative philosophy is at the heart of Laura’s vision for the future. Her dream is that a woman’s location or financial circumstances should never determine whether her breast cancer is detected early enough. That means continuing to build an accessible network of breast screening facilities across Mauritius.
The first centre is open, the second has been ordered, the third is financed, and the Foundation is now working towards the fourth. Laura’s intention is simply to continue. And her ambition ultimately extends beyond Mauritius. Having seen what can be achieved by bringing together golf, businesses, NGOs and communities, she hopes one day to explore whether the same model could help women elsewhere.

JOSETTE, LIFE IN SWING
JOSETTE MARCHAL Photos : Sachin Sagar Location : Paradis Golf Club, Le Morne 40

At a time when many people dread the time that opens up after their professional life, Josette Marchal, for her part, has found her answer: a club, a little white ball and endless golf courses. Since discovering golf, this vibrant woman has made it much more than a sport. Golf has become a passion, a school of life, a source of friendships and a wonderful reason to keep moving. It all began as retirement approached. After years of an intense professional life, Josette was looking for an activity capable of filling her days. Some friends then told her about golf. Her first reaction? « What, golf? Never! » She imagined the sun, the outfits… and was frankly not convinced. Her friends nevertheless found the right argument: clothes! After a little detour through the shops, where she discovered some lovely golf outfits, Josette eventually let herself be tempted. She took her first 42
lessons with Silvia Knauber at the Tamarina hotel, which she remembers with great enthusiasm. « I was lucky to come across her. » She immediately enjoyed golf. Perhaps because it awakened in her a deeply rooted taste for challenges. « Since I like taking on challenges, it has to go all the way. » And off she went. When she thinks back to her beginnings, she still has fun remembering her handicap of 35 and her first Masters de l’Île aux Cerfs; in 2018, she had moved to 20. But behind the figures, there was already something there, a natural ability, particularly for driving, and above all a fierce desire to improve.
43
She particularly remembers an exercise devised by her teacher. A Moroccan cushion placed in front of her, a driver in her hands, and a rather… unusual instruction: to imagine that she wanted to « smash someone’s head » and hit the cushion with all her strength! Josette loves the image and laughs heartily about it. Above all, she understands the lesson behind it: that golf can help release tension, let out frustrations and focus on a goal. Because for her, golf bears a striking resemblance to life. There are good days, bad shots, frustrations, little miracles and that desire to start again and again. « You have to persevere to succeed. First, you have to love it. And when you love it, you want to improve. » And improving is something Josette knows how to do. Her success is the result of regular and relentless work. Lessons, training, accompanied rounds, technical work. She 44
does not hesitate to spend hours hitting balls or working on a specific area of her game. For her, golf is not simply about knowing how to hit a ball. You also have to learn how to manage a course, the wind, the conditions and tactical choices. The famous « course management ». But perhaps golf’s greatest lesson lies elsewhere: in humility. « You think you know, and then you realise that you know absolutely nothing. Because it’s a little ball that teaches you lessons in humility. » Josette particularly finds this humility when she plays with beginners. She knows how much a few disparaging remarks can unsettle someone who is just starting out. So she chooses the opposite approach. She encourages, accompanies and builds confidence. In her eyes, everyone has a place on a course, whatever their level.
45
This is also what makes her recent victories particularly enjoyable. In July, she won the Ladies Net at the AXYS Eastern Golfers Challenge at Île aux Cerfs. And that day, something was different. No pressure, no tension : simply the pleasure of sharing a round with two young beginners. « I had forgotten all the stress. For me, it was just a round and it was relaxing. » The result: victory! And immense joy. « I was incredibly happy. I said: “This is incredible!” » With a smile, she adds: « That day, the Golf God was with me. » A few months earlier or later, the dates are already getting mixed up in her memories, but another achievement remains etched in her memory: her hole-in-one at Tamarina Golf Club, for which she received a trophy. She tells the story with that characteristic mixture of pride and self-deprecation: « A hole-in-one is really a matter of luck. It’s not because you’re a great golfer! »
46
47
Her recent victory in the Ladies 1st Net category of the first AMCHAM Mauritius Golf Day 2026 also reflects who she is. There, she found herself back in a world she knows well, that of the professional world. For her, golf allows the pressure of responsibilities and work to fall away for a few hours. « It brings a kind of oxygenation to your mind. » Four hours on a course to think about something else, take a step back and sometimes even return to your problems with a different perspective. Golf becomes a breath of fresh air. And then there are the encounters. Because although golf is an individual sport, Josette has never made it a solitary adventure. « Golf has taken over my whole life. » Her own children even joke: if anyone wants to see Mum, all they have to do is go to the golf course! There she meets her friends over coffee, sometimes a beer, shares rounds, laughter and convivial moments. Her two 48
daughters now live in Malaysia and Switzerland, while her son has returned to Mauritius. Golf has become her anchor, her meeting place and almost her second home. But it has also changed her daily life. She even speaks of a genuine « lifestyle hygiene ». Competitions start early, rounds are tiring, and the next day you have to be in good shape. So sleep, diet, late nights out… everything is organised differently. And the passion shows no sign of slowing down. For the remainder of the AXYS Eastern Golfers Challenge, Josette simply wants to keep doing her best. She knows that time is passing, and she also knows that she will not become a professional. But that is not really the point.
49
50
The result matters, of course. But not as much as the pleasure of playing, meeting people, sharing and improving. To those who are still hesitating about taking up golf, particularly those approaching retirement, she issues a genuine call: « Go for it, go for it! Because it’s really good for your morale. » The courses, the encounters, the competitions, the lunches after the rounds… and that constant desire to improve. Because once you have had a taste of it, she warns with a smile: « It almost becomes a drug. You become addicted. Hooked! » For Josette Marchal, golf has therefore not simply filled the days left free by retirement. It has given them a new rhythm, new challenges and a multitude of reasons to rejoice. And clearly, the swing is far from over.

A Young Golfer With Big Dreams
GRANT
LABUSCHAGNE WINNER OF 2026 MCB INDIAN OCEAN OPEN
From a seven-year-old boy who simply loved the game to the winner of the 2026 MCB Indian Ocean Open, Grant Labuschagne’s golfing journey is gathering remarkable momentum. In Mauritius, the young South African proved that he can hold his own against professionals, and perhaps gave us a glimpse of a much bigger future.
60
Photos : Sachin Sagar Location : Anahita Golf Club, Mauritius 61
At just 19, Grant Vincent Labuschagne has already added another impressive chapter to what promises to be a very exciting golfing journey. In early July, the young South African claimed victory at the 2026 MCB Indian Ocean Open, held at the spectacular Anahita Golf Club in Mauritius. With a three-round total of 207, nine under par, Grant not only won the Amateur category but also topped the overall championship, finishing ahead of the professionals and amateurs competing in the event. His performance was particularly impressive in a field of 93 golfers representing 14 countries. But behind this Mauritian victory lies a much longer love story with golf. Grant first discovered the game at the age of seven, after being introduced to it by his father. And, in a telling reflection of his personality, he explained a few years ago that his father had never pushed him into the sport: “My Dad never pushed me. I just loved 62
the game.” The passion quickly turned into talent. As a junior at Randpark Golf Club in South Africa, Grant became a familiar name on the local golfing scene. He won the club’s Junior Championship four consecutive times, from 2021 through 2024, an extraordinary achievement that underlined his consistency from a very young age. And Grant is not exactly the kind of golfer who goes unnoticed on a course. Randpark describes him as big, strong and confident, with a remarkable ability to generate power. His drives have been measured at more than 320 metres, and he has the length to reach all of Randpark’s par 5s in two shots. In the 2024 Junior Championship, he even reached the demanding 17th hole of Bushwillow in two, using a huge drive followed by a seven-iron over the water and onto the green. His talent, however, goes well beyond distance.
63
In 2023, Randpark reported that Grant had already established himself among South Africa’s top junior golfers. He had won three Central Gauteng Golf Union Under-19 tournaments, finished runner-up in the Central Gauteng Open and helped the Central Gauteng team win the Junior Interprovincial Championship. He had also produced a remarkable bogey-free seven-under-par 65 on Royal Johannesburg’s challenging East Course. By 2025, he had moved beyond junior success and claimed his first Randpark Club Championship, shooting rounds of 73 and 75 for a 148 total. Then came 2026, and another significant step forward. Before arriving in Mauritius, Grant had already put together an impressive season. He finished seventh at the Free State Open, including a brilliant final-round 65, tied for fifth at the GolfRSA International Amateur, and then won the Northern Cape Open Amateur Championship with a 204 total 12 under par. 64
At the MCB Indian Ocean Open, Grant took his game to another level. His nine-under-par 207 earned him the overall championship title as well as the amateur crown. For a young amateur competing against professionals, it was a statement performance. But perhaps the most exciting part of Grant’s story is that he has never been shy about dreaming big. As a teenager, he was already looking towards college golf in the United States, before eventually turning professional and pursuing a career at the highest level. And his ambitions were clear: he dreamed of reaching the biggest stages in the sport, including the Masters at Augusta.
Today, that dream may still be some distance away, but the journey is firmly underway. At Anahita, Grant Labuschagne showed that he has the game, the power and the composure to compete successfully on an international stage. More importantly, at only 19, he still has time to develop, learn and build on every experience. Perhaps one day, when his name appears on the leaderboards of the world's biggest tournaments, we will look back at the beginning of his story, at a seven-year-old boy discovering golf, simply because he loved the game. And perhaps we will also remember that one of the early chapters of that story was written right here in Mauritius.
