By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens SES Unit have taken home gold and silver medals in the 2021 World Rescue Challenge. Drones and virtual reality replaced the face-to-face competition in the world-first virtual World Rescue Challenge. The World Rescue Challenge is an annual event hosted by the World Rescue Organisation, where teams are presented with scenarios, which require them to work together to rescue and treat casualties. Competing under the name Hunter Valley Rescue, team six was composed of four NSW SES members and two NSW Ambulance members.

Alysha Springett, a member of the team, spoke about the experience. “It was a little bit challenging this year as we usually train hands on with our tools and with vehicles. “It makes it a little bit different to be virtually walking around a car in a simulation environment but the concepts do still apply the same way,” Ms Springett said. The team put their rescue experience to good use, performing scene assessment, taskings, casualty assessment and triage, injury management, vehicle stabilisation, extrication planning, safety management, vehicle deconstruction and casualty handover to ambulance paramedics. IN the bid to secure the position of popularly elected Mayor for Port Stephens, the race has been a tight one. As of Monday evening, with 100 percent of formal votes counted and 4.15 percent of Informal/Other Votes counted, Incumbent Mayor Ryan Palmer was ahead of Labor Mayoral Candidate Leah Anderson by a slim margin of around 137 votes, according to the Electoral Commission. The race for the seat of Mayor for Port Stephens has been one of the closest run in the state. This result is in stark contrast to the 2017 election when Mr Palmer romped home, taking Glen Dunkley, the second on his ticket, through as a Councillor for East Ward. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said on Saturday night that the election for Mayor was “too close to call”. Mayoral Candidate Leah

Anderson said she is incredibly grateful for the community's support and is excited to be taking a seat at the table as a Councillor for East Ward. She is still hopeful that she will “get up” and win the Mayoral race. Speaking to News Of The Area on Monday night, Mayor Palmer said he was remaining positive about retaining his position as Mayor, despite the closeness of the election. “When you get 38,000 votes, and only 100 something votes between us, it is a very close run thing. “You have to remain positive about the whole thing.” Running as an Independent, Mr Palmer said he was proud to challenge the major political parties in the Local Government arena. “We have increased our vote from last time, and we are just a group of friends and family trying to do the best thing by Port Stephens. “We are going against a political party that has been around for 100 years, with a large supporter base across Australia, I think we are doing pretty good to be even in there with a shot.” Mr Palmer thanked the Port Stephens community for their support during the campaign and

his time as Mayor. “It’s been amazing, the support we have received throughout the campaign. “The people who have seen what has happened over the last four years and want to see those things continue. “That’s why I am running, there is a lot more to do. “It wasn’t just about doing a four year stint and getting out, it is about continuing the good work we have done. “Whether you voted for myself or the Labor party, I am sure If I get back in, there is a lot more we can achieve together.” Monday 5 December saw the counting of postal and pre-poll votes. The NSW Electoral Commission will be notifying the final results on 23 December, potentially leaving the two candidates waiting weeks for the final result.

Join The Renewable Revolution By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens has the opportunity to take part in the new energy revolution which will assist Australia in reducing emissions as per the COP26 agreement. Workers in the Hunter and Central Coast are set to benefit from the powering up of renewable energy projects in the regions, with registrations of interest now open for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Treasurer and Minister for Energy and Environment Matt Kean said the REZ will connect multiple energy generators and storage projects across the regions, which will help industry thrive and create the low carbon jobs of the future. “This new REZ will ensure the Hunter and Central Coast remain the powerhouse of New South Wales, with 60 percent of the State’s homes, businesses and industry already powered out of these regions,” Mr Kean said. “The Hunter-Central

Coast REZ will provide cheap, reliable and clean electricity for the homes and businesses of NSW, while supporting new job creation as we shift to a low carbon future. “The NSW Government has the nation-leading policies and plans in place to deliver on our commitment to halve our State’s emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050.” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said there are already 13 renewable energy and battery storage projects in the Hunter and Central Coast, which are approved or progressing through the planning system. There are currently cutting edge technology battery storage businesses being built and operating in Tomago. “The Hunter-Central Coast REZ is a key part of our State’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which is expected to deliver $32 billion in private investment, and create 6,300 construction and 2,800 ongoing jobs by 2030,” Mr Martin said.

Farmers Plight Over Development By Marian SAMPSON

ARE the rural properties in Port Stephens at risk of residential developments? Local farmers that have been on the land in Seaham for years believe that they are. In a region that floods as Nelsons Plains does, there is a need for high ground where cattle and other animals can be moved to to keep them safe during floods. Now, a potential development could see the loss of one of the last remaining areas of high ground where cattle can be moved to safely during flood events. Farmer Peter Manuel raises cattle on a farm that has been operating locally for over 200 years. He told News Of The Area, “The local farmers are deeply worried about getting shut down over time if the development goes ahead.” The two cattle farms and three poultry farms around Nelson’s Plains contribute an estimated $3 million dollars to the economy of Port Stephens annually. Mr Manuel believes that his farm is at risk by the proposed development of large residential blocks right on his boundary. His house, working sheds and cattle yards sit close to where the 8000 square meter blocks are proposed. He has concerns that his farm will be effectively shut down by complaints when he fertilises with chicken manure. He believes that when the calves are weaned in the cattle yards, the new residents, who probably won’t have a farming background, will complain nearly as loudly as the calves do when they are separated from their mothers. He also feels that the odours from the cattle yards in

periods of rain will be an issue for the new residents. There are also concerns about water catchment and the runoff of rainwater once the natural land is replaced with roofing, and hard surfaces. The farm will be impacted by household and garden chemicals from the new development and there is also the risk of leaking sewage into the dam. The farmers are also worried about dog attacks on young calves. Associated with the farms are 24 hour heavy vehicle movements, with trucks arriving at the chicken farms in the area at all hours. Chickens are collected at

night while they are sleeping which is less stressful for the birds. The farmers are fearful that their businesses and livelihoods are in jeopardy, as they believe Council is so busy working on developing the region that they are prepared to see the end of local farming businesses in favour of development. Local farmers are now in the position where they are calling the police in relation to acts of trespassing by the developers and their contractors. Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, "For decades, developers have been favoured by this Council over people in our local community. “Where developers submit proposals that will disadvantage our community, it says a lot about how much they care about the people of Port Stephens. "I voted against this proposal when it came to Council, because our agricultural land should not be threatened by developments like this, and the local families who are trying to make a living in this area should not have their livelihoods destroyed.”

THE NSW Government has officially opened the $7 million TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre (CLC) in Tomaree. As of Thursday 2 December 2021, the centre is now open, offering students access to the latest learning technologies, expert teachers both on and off-site as well, personalised support

services all encompassed in Tomaree’s new modern campus experience. Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the NSW Government is significantly investing in the future of education across regional NSW. "This latest investment in Tomaree is enhancing TAFE NSW's capacity to deliver quality training locally and offer a wider range of courses so young people can live and learn close to home," Mr Lee

said. "Enrolments are now open for Semester One 2022. “Local students will have their pick of more than 37 courses, including the in-demand Certificate III in Community Pharmacy and the Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business. "We are proud to invest in TAFE NSW and ensure students in regional communities can build the skills and abilities for the jobs of today and tomorrow." Parliamentary Secretary for

in being part of the REZ. “The NSW Government is focused on making sure new energy infrastructure is built in places where the community wants it, and the Central Coast is ready to welcome the renewable technology of the future,” Mr Crouch said. “Extensive and meaningful community engagement is at the core of the NSW Government’s REZ program, with the Hunter-Central Coast REZ expected to take several years to design and develop.” Member for Upper Hunter Dave Layzell said the REZ will support the development of the Hunter Hydrogen Hub, which will result in some of the cheapest green hydrogen in the world. “The Hunter-Central Coast REZ is a fundamental part of our Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, to build NSW into an energy superpower, and will provide a huge boost to the State’s clean, affordable and reliable electricity supply,” Mr Layzell said. “Planning, designing and building new electricity

infrastructure is complex and requires a detailed understanding of the Hunter region. “The NSW Government is committed to engaging closely with the local community and stakeholders every step of the way.” The Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo NSW) is in the early stages of planning the Hunter-Central Coast REZ and the registration of interest (ROI) will help to inform the timing, capacity, design and location of the Hunter-Central Coast REZ. REZs are modern day power stations bringing together low-cost solar and wind generation with transmission and storage to produce cheap, clean and reliable electricity. The call for registrations of interest in the Hunter-Central Coast REZ will close on 4 February 2022. FOR the first time, the old school site in Lemon Tree Passage was abandoned as a polling place and the auditorium at Club Lemon Tree took its place. This was seen as both more voter friendly and more in keeping with the Covid restrictions. Tanilba Bay Public School was the other venue on the Tilligerry Peninsula, and at both locations social distancing and face masks were mandatory. To lower the risk of Covid transmission, each voter was given a pen which they could keep. Prospective councillors and their helpers were not allowed to hand out their 'how to vote' flyers for fear of spreading Covid. HUNTER Water has delivered its single biggest upgrade to one of the Lower Hunter region’s Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW). $36 million will be spent in Port Stephens as part of the upgrade. Upgrades and water saving measures are designed to ensure the water security of the region into the future. The $73 million investment at Farley WWTW near Maitland caters for an increasing population in the fastest growing regional area in New South Wales. The upgraded plant services

large parts of the booming Maitland community, including 8,000 new and planned homes in Rutherford, Lochinvar and Aberglasslyn, together with the suburbs of Bolwarra, Gillieston Heights, Largs, Lorn, Oakhampton and Telarah. Minister for Water, Housing and Property, Melinda Pavey, said the major investment demonstrated Hunter Water’s ongoing commitment to service the region’s population growth for the next decade and beyond and continue to protect the environment. “The Farley WWTW upgrade improves the capacity, reliability and performance of the plant to provide high-quality wastewater treatment, delivering better community and

environmental outcomes for the growing region. “The NSW Government has supported Hunter Water to complete the new, $28 million WWTW at Dungog earlier this year, and now with the Farley upgrade finished more than $100 million has been invested on these two projects alone,” Mrs Pavey said. Hunter Water Managing Director, Darren Cleary, said innovation in design and during delivery included combining two treatment processes in one structure to minimise the construction footprint. “The $73 million upgrade at Farley is our largest capital works investment at a WWTW to date and will ensure we can continue to cater

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update. Fullerton Cove Fire On November 30, crews from Williamtown/Salt ash and Medowie Rural Fire Brigades responded to reports of an unknown fire in the Fullerton Cove area. On arrival they found a shed alight and quickly worked to extinguish the blaze. Although it has been quite wet weather recently, the brigade wishes to remind residents that fires can still occur and that for all planned burns, a fire permit needs to be obtained. SES Training This week, members from NSW SES Port Stephens undertook more refresher training on winching, recovering connecting trailers and accessing spare tyres. The unit consistently works hard to ensure that all members are well versed in completing

largest in the southern hemisphere by the National Register of Big Trees. “It was a brilliant evening - it’s always amazing to see everyone come together to celebrate this special time of year with their family and friends. “We were overwhelmed

by all the people who came down to join the festivities,” a representative from NSW SES – Port Stephens Unit told News Of The Area. “We are so lucky to have such an amazing community.” Throughout the night, community members flooded in to hear live music from Irrawang High School Students and enjoy carols by the Anglican Church choir and were even surprised by a guest appearance from Santa and his elf who stopped in to wish the Raymond Terrace community a Merry Christmas. The bad weather stayed away after an inconsistent day allowing everyone to have an enjoyable night before the lights were switched on and met by a chorus of ‘wows’ from attendees.

“With our role in pandemic response winding down as the state progresses along the road to recovery, I want to encourage our newest recruits to remember what’s at the heart of everything we do as police officers – community safety.” Education and Training Commander, Assistant Commissioner Dean Smith, said the Class of 350 had been presented with unique challenges throughout their training due to COVID-19, but had shown resilience to reach this proud moment. “The 218 students were first required to study at home for a lengthy period, and once on site, were placed in lockdown at the academy

– unable to take weekend leave to see their families until two weeks ago,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said. “I congratulate them for the strength and dedication they have shown – it sets them up well for long and distinguished careers.” Class 350 has a total of 162 men and 55 women sworn, with 192 Australianborn recruits and 26 born overseas in countries including countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia, China, Greece and Ireland. Languages in addition to English spoken by students in Class 350 include Arabic, Assyrian, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Filipino, Korean, Nepali, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. PORT Stephens-Hunter Police District have welcomed three new Probationary Constables to the district. Class 350 are the newest attested recruits from the NSW Police Force who were sworn in on Friday 3 December 2021. From Monday 6 December 2021, 218 recruits will commence duties across the state, seeing them undertake a year of on-the-job training and completion of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice by distance education with Charles Sturt University before being confirmed to the rank of constable. The local district welcomes Probationary Constables’ Kayla Wilson, Emma Nicholson and Darren Rondo to the Port StephensHunter Police District. Professionals can be pricey, but this is what they do, day in day out and often over decades so their skills are very refined. Plus, they can devote all day every day for the duration of your job, so there is a time-related benefit in outsourcing. Alternatively, your partner may be super handy and happy to spend hours sanding, gapping where necessary, fixing any weatherboards or cracks in brickwork and then spending his – and your – afterwork hours, weekends and holidays to have the job done in a reasonable time frame so that you don’t have half your house painted and lose heart on completing what can be a daunting task! Plus you don’t mention whether yours is a single or double storey home because whether inside or out, you may have to hire scaffolding to reach those ‘beyond the ladder’ areas. Safety first! Stockton Part of First Disability Action Plan By Marian SAMPSON

THE City of Newcastle is calling for comment on its new draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) as part of its commitment to creating an accessible and inclusive community. This plan includes the Stockton precinct. City of Newcastle’s Interim Director of Strategy and Engagement, Kathleen Hyland, said International Day of People with Disability (December 3) was the perfect time to reflect on key achievements of Newcastle's inaugural DIAP and ask the community for their input on the updated Plan. "Today we celebrate the progress made through the 2016 DIAP, including the establishment of the Access Inclusion Advisory Committee," Ms Hyland said. "It's now time for the broader community to provide input into the new draft 2021 DIAP, which sets the direction and outlines key actions to be implemented over the coming years to ensure our services and programs are accessible for everyone. "City of Newcastle remains committed to ensuring our city is inclusive for all who live, visit and work here, by leading action towards a more equitable society." City of Newcastle was the first Council in New South Wales to adopt a DIAP under the current legislation, which saw 55 of 57 actions significantly progressed or completed across the four-year period from 2016 to 2020. Positive outcomes from the first plan include: the establishment of the Access Inclusion Advisory Committee to ensure decisions are informed by direct consultation with people with lived experience with disabilities; the establishment of Newcastle’s Count Us In festival to raise the profile of disability inclusion across the city; and the inclusion of people with a disability in the consultative processes, including provided input into or co-design of major projects by City of Newcastle. MOTORISTS are advised of changed traffic conditions from next week on Nelson Bay Road to carry out work on a 500-metre section of road about five kilometres east of Marsh Road at Salt Ash. From Monday 6 December, lane and shoulder closures will be in place from 9:30am to 2:30pm, weather permitting. One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic during this work. HSC Exams Over THE 2021 Higher School Certificate exams officially ended at 12:30 on Friday December 3, when 3,756 Food Technology students finished their final exam. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said it was a momentous day for the Class of 2021, who have shown incredible resilience and hard work to get to this point. “Today officially marks the end of 13 years of schooling for 69,000 Year 12 students and I am incredibly happy to see them so triumphantly reach the finish line,” Ms Mitchell said. “HSC students should be very proud of what they have achieved over the past two years. “The resilience, focus and adaptability they have shown

will serve them well in the next chapter of their life, whether that is university, vocational training, or employment. “To safely deliver 400,000 individual exam sessions statewide with no disruption amidst a global pandemic is a huge success. “I thank the school sectors, principals, teachers, school staff, exam supervisors and invigilators, students and their families for their engagement and adherence to the COVIDsafe HSC exam guidelines." Over the past four weeks, students sat 110 exams across 750 exam venues, with strict COVID-safe protocols in place. Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Paul Martin said the 2021 HSC was a huge success, with all exams going

ahead safely even when a small number of schools closed due to COVID-19. “Having a robust set of COVIDsafe exam protocols in place was vital to the success of exams this year,” Mr Martin said. “The protocols and plans in place also proved effective in mitigating against other issues throughout the exam period, including flooding in parts of the state. “Students in the impacted areas were able to safely get to alternate exam venues. “My sincerest gratitude goes to the school community and exam staff for delivering a COVID-safe HSC this year.” Marking is already underway, with results to be delivered via SMS and email on Monday 24 January. Funding available for Surf Life Saving Clubs

LOCAL Surf Life Saving Clubs can apply for grants up to $500,000 following the opening of the NSW Government’s Surf Club Facility Program. Up to $4 million is available to Surf Life Saving Clubs across NSW for the upgrade, restoration and construction of facilities. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin

said local surf clubs could receive grants of $30,000$500,000 for projects that will enable them to continue to keep people safe on our beaches. “Our local surf life saving volunteers provide a world-class service to keep safe in the water and on our beaches,” Mr Martin said. “It’s vital surf life savers have modern fit for purpose

HORIZONS Golf Resort in Salamander Bay has obtained funding from The Australian Golf Foundation (AGF) to

support five lucky teenage girls to pursue their passion for golf. Scholarships are open to girls aged 10 to 16 and while

the program’s primary aim is to retain girls in golf by giving girls a shared golf experience, girls new to golf may also be

engaged in this program should they demonstrate a commitment to learning the sport. This also applies to girls aged 7 – 10 years who have shown a keen interest in golf and have

good experience. “This is a terrific opportunity and a wonderful achievement for golf in our region,” said Vince Owen, Head Professional at Horizons. “Not only will girls receive 24 coaching sessions with our PGA Professional team, but also a one-year junior club membership that carries playing rights, to ensure girls can participate in club competitions and obtain a handicap.” The Scholarship program is part of a national campaign to get more girls playing golf. Along with 134 other golf facilities across Australia, Horizons will be working closely with golf’s national body Golf Australia throughout 2022 and they are the only course who have been awarded this funding in the Newcastle, Hunter and Port Stephens region! “All we ask is that applicants display a desire and willingness to improve their golf skills, obtain a handicap, play in club competitions (or at least social play) and engage in any extracurricular activity that fosters friendships between scholarship holders.” A total of five scholarships will be available for 2022, and the program is expected to commence in February 2022.
