PORT Stephens has a huge number of community members who go above and beyond. Eleven of Ports finest were recognised on Australia Day at the Council’s official commemoration ceremony. Quietly and behind the scenes is where Rotarian and Raymond Terrace community John Chambers prefers to be, however on Australia Day he was named the 2020 Port Stephens Citizen of the Year. John has been recognised for his extensive contributions to the community, including a driver training program to help people get on the road and a furniture bank for families in need, among many other initiatives. John works closely with Di Ball, Port Stephens Australia

By Victoria HENDERSON IT isn’t often that communities see long term projects come to a positive outcome but Medowie is glad to see the Medowie Social open at last. After a soft opening for friends and family, Charlie and Ben Way were able to welcome the community which has waited so impatiently
The Medowie Social opens its doors to locals for their latest hotspot to open. Sue Xenos was one of the locals lucky enough to be there for the opening. “There was really good service and even though there were large crowds they were all dealt with calmly and efficiently,” she said. “All our meals were delivered together and of good quality.
“I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to have a drink and meal in nice surroundings where you are made to feel welcome.” Following a good opening with a great day the Medowie Cricket Club coordinated their ‘Pink Stumps’ event for the Social’s first day in business. The event is held in
support of the McGrath Foundation which raises money for breast cancer support. Locals were keen on Saturday for somewhere to hide from the rain and enjoy community cricket in support of a great cause. Thanks to a raffle held at the Social, the Cricket Club was able to raise over $1300 for the
charity. There is also a great deal to be said about their mini cob loaves and pork belly it seems. Social media has been awash with praise following the opening and it seems that the Medowie Social is the venue the township has been waiting for.

Day Ambassador, who was unable to suppress her joy on the announcement that John was the Port Stephens Citizen of the Year. John Chambers told News Of The Area, “I find this a little bit embarrassing, but I think it’s important that a person can see that a person like me can do what I do and get the support from so many others who want to do the same thing; there is no reason to stand back.”
John is certainly a quiet achiever and that is how John works. “We are not about building egos, we are about building communities.” John is proud of his work with the Indigenous community and, importantly, his work that contributes to bridging the gap. “We are working on addressing poverty in the area and bringing the standard of living up.” In John’s work he not only assists people out of

poverty, he does it face to face with them and works with them to change their lives. “We don’t have clients, we have mates,” he said. John believes that the work he does is creating a two way street for the future of our community. The team at the NOTA congratulate John on being named Port Stephens Citizen of the Year and the team that he works with for the good that they do in our community.
Cancer Doesn’t Stand a Chance CANCER has had it’s last laugh according to six intrepid adventurers who are Stand-up Paddle Boarding 40km up the Port Stephens and Myall coastline to promote awareness and raise money for charity. After losing close relatives and fighting off their own cancer battles, Nicki Day, Rita BoysSmith, Ronald Cropper, Neale Martin, Marshall Kane and Charne Lindsay decided enough was enough. The team have undergone strenuous training for their three day paddle which starts on 11 February. The SUP’n it Forward team has been raising money to conquer cancer since 2017 and remind their community to get a check before it's too late and find a cure. Port’s Best Honoured By Marian SAMPSON LOCAL Community Groups and champions were honoured at the Port Stephens Australia Day ceremony held at Medowie. Alongside Port Stephens Citizen of the Year, John Chambers, were 10 others who were recognised for their work in the community. From the environment, to sport and culture our community leaders were applauded for their contribution to our community. Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “All of our recipients have generously given their time to help others, whether that’s through contributing to community groups and programs, caring for the environment, celebrating our culture or dedicating themselves to help our sporting community.” Ports Young Citizen of the Year is Daniel Howard who is a basketball coach and mentor with PCYC for the past 9 years. Throughout COVID-19, Dan used technology to help to motivate local teens to keep fit during the lockdown. Four Port Stephens Medals were awarded to individuals, organisations or groups for distinguished service to the
community. One of these went to Dennis Peters, the recently retired captain of the Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue team. Not only has Dennis stood on the front line for 23 years he has been a community educator, working with young people and our community about the importance of fire safety. Another went to John de Ridder, the former president of Caring for Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) since he has been working to improve mental health and wellbeing in young people in Port Stephens. Also awarded was Andrew Smith, a proud Wonnarua man, and a well-

since 2006. Andrew is dedicated to advocating for and strengthening
relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, and to protecting and fostering Aboriginal culture and identity. Andrew Smith told News Of The Area, “I think this is an excellent recognition of all of those people out there in the Port Stephens Community, they talk about leadership but really it is about servanthood, we have a passion for our people, our environment on both the social and commercial level. “I think taking time to stop and
think and just say thank you is a really big honour and a very humbling experience,” he said. A fourth Port Stephens Medal was given to the Medowie Girl Guides, a group run by volunteers who give their time to help teach young women new skills, develop independence, build confidence, make friends and become active community members. Alongside the Port Stephens Medal Winners was Sportsperson of the Year, awarded to Maya Stewart, who is currently vying for a spot in the national Wallaroos squad to participate in the upcoming Olympics and Rugby World Cup. The Cultural Endeavour went to Kay Newton and Peter Robinson who now reside in New Zealand for their efforts and contributed to historical education in our area. The hotly contended Environmental Award went to Lia and Ryan Pereira the founders of Sea Shelter, a not-for-profit marine conservation, research and rescue organisation. They are passionate about preserving the local environment and supporting threatened and endangered animals through breeding programs, research, rehabilitation and rescue.

OVER the Australia Day period 22 to 26 January 2021 Port Stephens-Hunter District Police conducted a total of 2,226 RBT throughout the District and charged 12 Persons with Drink and Drive Offences. Heatherbrae/Eagleton High Range PCA, involving a 44-year-old male from Port Macquarie. About 6.50am on 24/01/21 the driver of a vehicle was observed in Heatherbrae, to be "all over the road", crossing the centre line and the verge line. A witness had contacted Triple Zero and while speaking with police, the offending vehicle failed to negotiate a slight bend and continued straight, driving through and over the median strip, colliding with a tree, then continued into the south bound lane for a short distance before returning to the northbound lane. About 7.10am police arrived at the location and spoke with the witness and

the driver. The driver was breath tested, returning a positive result and placed under arrest for the purpose of a breath analysis and conveyed to Raymond Terrace Police Station where the driver underwent a breath analysis which returned a positive High Range PCA result. The driver was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice and had their licence suspended. Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area On Saturday 23/1/21 police from the Port Stephens - Hunter PD conducted an interagency operation in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area. The operation involved Port Stephens - Hunter Sector Police, Marine Area Command, Traffic and Highway Command, NSW Maritime, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Midcoast Council, and NSW National Parks and Wildlife. The operation encompassed the both
townships as well as the waterways of Port Stephens, Myall River, Myall Lakes and associated campgrounds, Jimmy's, Bennett's and Mungo Beaches, and offshore to Broughton Island. During this operation, police targeted driving offences, permit related offences, boating and PWC compliance, and anti-social behaviour with a focus on positive community interaction and education During the operation, police conducted 227 random breath tests, issued 8 cautions for beach permit infractions, with 3 infringement notices issued. Across the agencies a further 29 infringement notices were issued for relative offences and 1 traffic related charge. Police were involved in numerous positive community interactions throughout the day with police presence warmly received by the general public.

Port Stephens Celebrates Australia Day By Marian SAMPSON
FOR some Australia Day is contentious; for many it is a day to celebrate. A day when we come together from all walks of life and simply celebrate our lives under the great southern sun. This year there were no parades, no live entertainment and even the Australian National Anthem was something that we listened to rather than sang, yet still Australians in Port Stephens celebrated. At the Port Stephens Australia Day ceremony our Australia Day Ambassador Di Ball delivered a speech which honoured her people and made her an example to us all. Di Ball is Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation Executive Director, Order of Australia Medal recipient and the CEO of Karuah Aboriginal Land Council. Di Ball is a proud Aboriginal woman, the first one to graduate Year 12 in her country of Gumbangerri (Armidale). Di moved to Port Stephens in the mid 1990’s where she co-founded the Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation in 1994 in response to local need. At the Australia Day function held by Port Stephens Council Di Ball spoke of reconciliation, she
broke it down to our daily lives and offered powerful insight into the needs of her community. Di Ball said, “That developing really good relationships, which I call unified with government agency and with community, that is reconciliation. “How we ventured out with Rotary, the programs we got out there were for the community, in breaking down the barriers we became united, especially with our driver training program, the activities that we did in the schools, it was about bringing our kids together whether they were Indigenous or non Indigenous, it didn’t matter –
it was about reconciliation,” she said. Di Ball also stated how honoured she felt to be the Port Stephens Australia Day Ambassador for 2021. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer paid tribute to Di Ball for her honour of receiving the OAM last year and said that her services to the Port Stephens community are “Second to none, Di is an incredible advocate for Aboriginal people in Port Stephens.” The Mayor said, “To have her (Di Ball) here and Uncle Neville here shows that Australia Day here in Port Stephens is truly inclusive and that people are here to

COPSY VP Gets OAM By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens youth charity advocates and volunteers have been recognised amongst many in the Australia Day honours. Geoffrey Basser has received a Medal of the Order (OAM) for his services to the community of Port Stephens. Basser has most recently been heavily involved with the development and delivery of free youth counselling services in Port Stephens and serves as the Vice President of COPSY (Caring For Our Port Stephens Youth) which delivers the jupiter service. Basser, who is a past APEX Club Member and Rotarian was a recipient of the Port Stephens Medal in 2018 an honour that fellow COPSY Executive committee
member, John de Ridder, was a recipient of at the 2021 Port Stephens Council honours held at Medowie on Australia Day. COPSY’s services were identified as an area of need for the community after a study was conducted by Newcastle University in 2016. It was this needs analysis that identified the gaps in services to Port Stephens youth. The analysis provided credible ‘whole-ofcommunity’ research to both back up anecdotal evidence as well as provide guidance into the strategic direction we needed to take within the community. Throughout 2017 community consultation was carried out to narrow the
18 recommendations from the report, resulting in the following priorities for the community: Provide a free local counselling service; provide School/Community/

By Victoria Henderson AS the year begins anew, many community and social groups are coming back to life after their holiday period hibernation. This year for many groups it is doubly significant and their work in a distanced world doubly important. One of the groups in the area making important connections is Port Stephens Women in Business.
The group held their AGM last week and this was their first chance to meet face to face again since our world changed.
Their committee is made up of seven local businesswomen with their President, Fiona Brown, returning this year.

Lorna Bennett’s ‘The Lone Watchman’, a mesmerising artwork featuring a lone bird guarding the Port Stephens coastal and water area. Second and third places went to Lisa O’Donnell’s ‘Last Stand’ a triptych acrylic artwork of the trees in the area and Bev McKinnon-Matthews’ ‘Into the Burley Bucket’, an artwork utilising Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese method of printing fish. The exhibition’s theme was the heritage and sustainability of the Port Stephens area, in line with the Tomaree Museum
Association’s goal. “The Tomaree Museum Association aims to develop a Tomaree Museum and Interpretive Centre to document, protect and promote the history and changing natural environment of Port Stephens and Tomaree Peninsula, contributing to preserving the historic, cultural, marine and tourism value of Tomaree Headland,” Ian Farnsworth of The Tomaree Museum Association said. The art competition strongly highlighted the
excellence in talent from all involved, with many stand out articles. Excellent commendation should be given to Bev Bush for ‘Sammy the Seal’, a beautifully painted seal, Rebecca Cavanagh’s ‘Octopus’ a fascinating mixed media piece utilising wood, rope, sand and shells and Amanda Sutherland with her work ‘Birubi Reflections’ which was crafted entirely with bottle caps found on the local beaches. WINNERS have been announced for the AGL Port Stephens Art Competition, a Tomaree Museum Association activity supported by AGL. Judged by Paul Dear and exhibited at Broughtons at The Bay, d’Albora Marina Nelson Bay, the exhibition featured a range of artworks in a variety of media. First place of the competition went to

A SEA of blue Aussie flags fluttered in the breeze as Tilligerry Car Club celebrated Australia Day on the foreshore at Lemon Tree Passage. They were joined by outof-towners with the '48 - '78 Holden Car club rolling into town. The club members swapped stories and were kept cool by the gentle sea breeze.
Surprisingly, Henderson Park, the traditional venue for Australia Day celebrations, saw few people gather there despite BBQ facilities and play equipment being on hand. It was a different story at Mallabula and Tanilba Bay where every shady spot near the water had families picnicking and swimming safely in the shallows. Tilligerry Car Club hosts the largest community annual gathering on the peninsula
“There needs to be a balance between giving and getting,” she said. Although the group has reached their highest ever membership this year, with 64 paid members, Fiona says that it is the quality and not the quantity of their membership that matters. They also offer corporate memberships aimed at giving female driven businesses access to the networking, events, offers and information they share. The group aims this year to be the group that brings the most value to the women in business of Port Stephens. Their tag line is “Connect, Inspire, Support” with a free ‘taste test’ for new members to ensure that the group is able to meet their needs.

Hundreds of classic and vintage cars are on exhibition and profits from the event (around $130,000) have been forwarded to the children's section of the John Hunter Hospital over the years. Covid-19 saw it cancelled in 2020 but they are hopeful that 2021 will see its return. The club has regular outings around the Hunter but have been limited this past year by social distancing rules.

The clever casting crew behind this crime-drama did an excellent job of nabbing British heartthrob Ioan Gruffudd to play the lead. Sometimes you just need a wildcard to be the point of difference among all the other crime-dramas out there (and let’s face it, his smile doesn’t hurt, either). Not that you’ll see much smiling in this season three return as Dr Daniel Harrow (Gruffudd) investigates the death of a young man who claimed to be his son. The news shocks those close to him, but Harrow is pushed to reveal a chapter of his past. But just like in many of the cases his team investigate,

IS the Council joking? We have infrastructure falling apart in Lemon Tree and they want to build another skatepark less than 4kms from an existing facility.
Please, give us a break. The roads in Lemon Tree are falling apart, Lemon Tree Passage Road is a goat track from the old tip to the Bowling Club. The road has got to a point where the pot holes on pothole

repairs are not sustainable and they are causing massive damage to our cars, after rain you need a four wheel drive to navigate. If the Council has 250k to spare for a (second) skate park, give it to the residents

New Australian Citizens Join Port Community By Marian SAMPSON EVERY year as a part of the Port Stephens Australia Day formalities we welcome new citizens to Australia. These people are a part of what makes Australia great, our history of immigration and multiculturalism is a story which is woven together and told in our families and communities. recognise our similarities and differences. In becoming citizens of Australia, we become one. We salute our nation and we respect all our people equally. 4X4 Adventures Newcastle are a group you’ve probably seen lately. The convoy of heavy duty vehicles and keen drivers can often be spotted at trail heads and en masse at the local servo before departing the tarmac for rougher roads.
This intrepid group are heading into their third year of operation with their largest ever membership. It's easy to wonder if they should rename the group 4x4 Adventures Port Stephens with many adventures launched down Lavis Lane onto Stockton beach.

High-range drink driving in Heatherbrae POLICE have charged a man with high range PCA (prescribed concentration of alcohol) in Port Stephens after a member of the public reported him for dangerous driving before confiscating his keys when he pulled over, during the Australian Day road-safety operation. Between 12.01am last Friday, 22 January 2021, and 11.59pm Tuesday 26 January 2021, officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command with assistance from Police Area Commands and Police Districts conducted Operation Australia 2021 across NSW. About 6.50am on Sunday 24 January 2021, police received reports from a motorist that the driver of a Nissan Navara was driving dangerously on the Pacific Highway near Heatherbrae, Port Stephens. Police have been told the man, aged 44, drove onto a median strip and hit a small tree before pulling over on Six Mile Creek Road, Eagleton, where the motorist – a 46-year-old man, also stopped and took the driver’s keys away. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police Area Command arrived a short time later and breath tested the man, who allegedly returned a positive result. The man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where a subsequent breath analysis returned an alleged positive reading of 0.186. The man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for drive with high range PCA; and is due

Police conducted more than 96,000 breath tests, with more than 300 drivers charged with drink driving. In addition to the drink-driving charges, 386 people returned positive results for drugdriving. More than 9200 people were fined for other traffic offences, including not wearing a seatbelt and speeding. “While the poor behaviour of some drivers is disappointing, we’re overall encouraged by the behaviour of the vast majority of drivers over operation,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner Hegarty. “Sadly, three people lost their lives on NSW roads over this period. We continue to work hard in improving road safety for all road users across our state,” said Mr Hegarty.

AFTER playing cricket in Stockton since he was nine and cricket in the first grade competition in Newcastle for the past four years, Keith scored his maiden First Grade century, a score of 100 or more runs in a single innings by a batter. “A hundred is hard to get, especially in first grade and I’ve gotten close so many times and it feels so great to finally get there,” said Keith.
