Social opens its doors By Tara CAMPBELL MEDOWIE welcomed its newest venue to the area with an official grand opening on 29 May 2021, just months after business commenced. Medowie Social is a new restaurant and venue owned by Charlie and Ben Way, locals to the area who have a passion for community spirit and creating a family-friendly environment. The official opening of Medowie Social commenced with Worimi elder, Uncle John Ridgeway performing the Little Worimi song and introducing the event with a heartfelt Welcome To Country. A sacred smoking ceremony took place as visitors crowded around the venue with many children huddled to their parents being educated about the significance of the ceremony.

During a search of the bag, police seized 100.8 grams of a substance believed to be methylamphetamine, 80 grams of an unknown white powder, prescription medication and $32,840 cash. All will be forensically examined. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with supply prohibited drug –

Social grand opening, a welcomed addition to the Port FROM Page 1 Mayor Ryan Palmer took a moment to address all the attendees, welcoming the ‘new community hub’. “This club was conceived in the mid 1980s and we’re standing here in 2021 with this amazing facility here in Medowie. “Throughout COVID we were looking at many options for the club. “We had our plans, but to find the right operator was a journey in itself. “I believe we’ve got the best operators that we
possibly can and I know that Charlie and Ben will do an amazing job with this facility.” Mr Palmer continued with his short speech, emphasising the community benefit for a club such as Medowie Social. “I have young children and I know that Medowie is a community that is full of families and that’s what this club is all about, it’s a community facility.” Councillor Chris Doohan said, “I’m so proud to be
officially opening Medowie Social. “I’ve worked so hard for this facility for over 10 years, and it was actually the reason I put my hand up to be on the Council in the first place. “The success of the facility will ultimately be driven by the community and it seems so far success is a walk in the park. “I couldn’t be prouder to leave something like this as my legacy for our wonderful town of Medowie,” he said.
The afternoon was filled with smiles by all, despite the cold and windy day. Charlie and Ben Way, as well as the whole Medowie Social team, created the first of many community events. With jumping castles, face painting, sack races and live music by Megan Snow and of course, lots of food and drinks, the grand opening had something to entertain everyone in the family. The venue is now officially open with trading from Wednesday to Sunday.

Tomaree Headland was fortified and you can still see the remnant gun emplacements and torpedo tubes which were in place to protect the east coast of Australia against invasion by the Japanese. At just the other end of Stockton Beach which was fortified for the duration, Fort Scratchley fired on the enemy in the early hours of 8 June in 1942. Newcastle after it travelled across Stockton Bight and positioned itself about 9 kms north east of Newcastle. 34 shells were fired at Newcastle in the engagement. After 13 minutes of firing, the guns at Fort Scratchley returned fire with four rounds. The shelling caused minimal damage and no casualties in Newcastle. Make no mistake, the war was on the doorstep of Port Stephens and the area was defended by the servicemen stationed at Fort Tomaree and those of the HMAS Assault, a naval training ground in Port Stephens that prepared soldiers for war. On 24 May 1943 one of the
Catalinas stationed at Rathmines, Lake Macquarie crashed off Jimmys Beach at Port Stephens. Sadly, seven of nine crew members under the command of Flight Lieutenant Brian Higgins lost their lives. This week the anniversary of the crash was commemorated at the Inner Light of Port Stephens hosted by Marine Rescue and organised by the Tomaree Museum Association. A nephew of the late commander of the plane Flight Lieutenant Higgins also by the name of Brian Higgins attended the service. Special guests were RAAF Williamtown Commander Group Captain Anthony Stanton and the Mayor of Port Stephens, Ryan Palmer.

IT was all hands on deck for the team from Salamander Bay Fire and Rescue when a horse got stuck in a drain at Anna Bay over the weekend. The 17 hand, six year old gelding that became trapped was an ex racehorse. The rescue crew was led by Glenn Penn and they
were joined by Technical Rescue from New Lambton for the call out. The two crews worked tirelessly to get the horse free. Captain Malcolm Smith of Salamander Bay Fire and Rescue told News Of The Area, “The team used a steel hoop to secure a belly strap behind both the front and back legs and then mauver the horse onto its side and then it was dragged from the drain using a rubber mat.” This is not the first rescue of a horse for local Fire and Rescue

Crews teams and it probably won't be the last. Fortunately teams in Australia have embraced new methods for getting large animals rescued which mean that the crews working to free the animals are safer and so are the animals involved. Once out of the drain the horse was walking and appeared to be in good spirits. It has been a busy week for the team at Fire and Rescue Salamander Bay, hopefully they can have a quieter week, next week.

Environmental Citizen Nomination For Sea Shelter By MARIAN SAMPSON
LOCALS Lia and Ryan Pereira are active when it comes to supporting the local environment and it is not just the two of them - it is already a family affair. Their not for profit Sea Shelter recently conducted a clean up of d’Albora Marina’s at Nelson Bay with teams of volunteers. The organisation also rescues and rehabilitates turtles and other marine creatures, with the most recent release being a green sea turtle called Gabbi that was released back into the waters of Fly Point this month after 6 months of care at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters home of Sea Shelter at Anna Bay. Now the duo have been nominated as community champions by the public of Port Stephens in the annual Australia Day 2021 – Environmental Citizen of the Year NSW Awards. The awards aim to
recognise outstanding achievement during the past year and/or contribution to the local community over a number of years. The state-wide winners of the NSW Environmental Citizen of the Year and Young Environmental Citizen of the Year Award will receive oneoff donations of $3,000 and $1,000 respectively, to put towards their community initiative. In 2017 the duo cofounded Sea Shelter, a not-forprofit marine conservation organisation that’s dedicated to the research and rehabilitation of local marine life around Port Stephens. Sea Shelter runs entirely on volunteers who devote their time to marine cleanup activities and deliver education programs. They also conduct research into many Elasmobranch species including sharks, to ensure they’re protected from extinction. are countless inspiring community members making a positive impact in their local regions - from recycling and regeneration to protecting our flora, fauna and oceans.” The 2021 NSW Environmental Citizen of the Year Award is sponsored by Return and Earn, a NSW Government initiative that has seen over 5.5 billion bottles and cans returned for recycling by the NSW community through its network of over 620 return points across the state.
Over $22 million has been returned to community groups and charities via donations and fees from hosting return points, and an overall 43% reduction in drink container litter. Lia Pereira told News Of The Area, “It is wonderful to be nominated and this came after our environmental award from Port Stephens Council On Australia Day. “If we win the award we will buy an extra state of the art rehabilitation tank to
assist with our rescue and rehabilitation work,” she said. “It is actually fitting that we find out this weekend, (which is) World Environment Day, as we are actually holding a Beach Clean up in celebration of it and World Oceans Day, it would be great if you could help us get the word out so we can have more helpers cleaning up Port Stephens habitat.” Please register to participate on Irukandji or Sea Shelters facebook pages. At the moment Sea Shelter has five turtles including two Sea Turtles in care. Beryl, the longest resident rescue and largest turtle, is finally beginning to show signs that she will heal, however the team will have to wait around 18 months to finally set her free! “We cannot wait, watching her recover and the joy of releasing our rescued animals back into their home in the wild is what it is all about, it's what keeps us working these crazy hours every day for wildlife,” she said.
Seaham Storm the 10,000th Good Sports Club

MEMBERS of the Seaham Storm Baseball Club have plenty to be proud of. The Club has been actively inclusive for many years and they have recently been recognised as the 10,000th Club to join the Good Sports program operated by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. The Good Sports Program is Australia’s largest community health sports program which has been helping build strong community sporting clubs across Australia for over 20 years. The Program works with clubs across the country, teaching leaders
and administrators how to structure their club activities to encourage healthier behaviour, and become safer, more welcoming and familyfriendly places to enjoy sport. The program was designed as an alcohol management program – a way to change the drinking culture associated with sport. Now, 10,000 Good Sports clubs are using the program’s free tools and resources to build a policy around alcohol management, smoking regulations, mental health, illegal drugs and safe transport. The two-step online accreditation program is free for all Australian community sporting clubs. It’s simple to use

Nelson Bay Working Bee By Marian SAMPSON BEFORE 7 Day Makeovers came to Port Stephens there was the Nelson Bay Civic Pride Group and their Working Bees. The Civic Pride Group is an initiative of Business Port Stephens. These dedicated volunteers maintain gardens on a regular basis throughout the township and identify areas which need improvement. Much of their work is sponsored by local businesses who sponsor various gardens and installations. This week ona very wet weekend volunteers once more hit the streets of Nelson Bay to make the town look better and increase the positive vibe of the township. Margaret Wilkinson is one
of the lead volunteers on the Civic Pride Group; she told News Of The Area, “It was a working bee the Civic Pride Group had kicked down the road so when only intermittent showers were forecast, we opted to soldier on with the gardening jobs. “The paint jobs were naturally postponed. “Despite pouring rain we had 12 volunteers who worked hard putting in a new garden on the south eastern corner of Yacaaba and Donald Streets and lots of spring flowering colourful plants were added to the Stockton Street gardens. “At least the new plants didn’t need watering!” It was three years, almost to the day, since the community working bee had been held to clean up Nelson Bay CBD. Since then a handful

This week students Worimi Dates and Cooper Langham were both recognised for their sportsmanship while Irrawang High School’s Christina Muddle and Bella Rose Newell were recognised for their charitable contribution to the Leukemia Foundation after Christna shaved her head and Bella sold handmade jewellery as fundraisers for the cause. Kindness was also recognised with Fletcher Fisher and Grace Barry and Tyler being kind and caring towards others. Salt Ash Public School’s PBL student of the week was Libby Vogtmann, who was awarded
for her contribution in supporting younger students during the ANZAC Day commemorations. All of these students are to be commended and the support of MarketPlace at Raymond Terrace and the businesses within it has seen these students’ efforts recognised. The PBL awards that started in Raymond Terrace have proved to be a very successful initiative, one which has spread across the LGA in various formats, all of these recognise students for their community contribution rather than academic or sporting achievements.

Big Brother devotees may bemoan rule changes that allow strategising and scheming, but new fans love the mind games this season, as well as the sneaky house surprises. After 52 days, reality is setting in that the $250,000 prize is within reach. 30 MAY 2021. As mentioned in the last edition both of our No.7 Grade Sides won their Section and proceeded to the Playoffs for the District “Flag” and if successful go on to the
State Playoffs. Our No.6 Grade Side were in with a chance of a Section win but unfortunately other results did not go their way and they missed out by 2 points. The No.7 Grade District

playoffs were held at the Club Lambton Bowling Club on Saturday and Sunday 29 and 30 May. The 8 Sides were split into 2 Sections and played 3 games to decide a Section winner to contest the Final.
Our No.1 Grade Side played Valentine in the Saturday morning game and in a cliff hanger the match ended in a 63 shots draw and 5.5 points. In the afternoon game they played Lowlands and in another tight finish were edged out by 50-53 shots and

1 point. On Sunday morning they played East Maitland and again finished on the wrong side of the Master Board losing by 51-54 shots and scoring 2 points. Our No.2 Side played Teralba on Saturday morning and won by 68-43 shots securing 9 points.
In the afternoon they played Nelson Bay1 Side and in another close game the match finished in a 57 shots draw and 5.5 points. On Sunday morning they played Edgeworth and won by 59-55 shots and 8 points.

Probus For Active Retirees

THE sun has been shining and members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club have made the most of it with enjoyable gatherings. The purpose of the Probus Club is to enjoy the fun and friendship that come with joining up with fellow retirees
who have much to offer. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “There has been a barbecue beachside at Corlette, a four-day away trip to Port Macquarie that included a sea voyage, not a trans-Tasman one of course, but we found that the Hastings River leads to wonderful watery places!
Parking Not Parklets PARKLETS were launched in Shoal Bay with anticipation, with Council keen to see the streetscape activated. Some business owners of Nelson Bay initially rejected the parklets citing potential business downturn and loss of jobs being directly related to loss of parking spaces. Shoal Bay was Council’s plan B for the installation of parklets and the structures were installed on Shoal Bay Road in mid March and at the time were well received by food outlets in the shopping precinct. However, not all business operators are enjoying the parklets. Lisa England of the Shoal Bay Newsagency told News Of The Area, “We have found that customers are complaining due to the reduced level of street parking. “There is also a safety issue attached to the design of the parklets, one split second will
be all that it will take if a child climbs on the rails, and there is also a trip hazard.” The rails to stop pedestrians spilling into the street were an afterthought as the original design allowed people to spill directly into the oncoming traffic. “The pathway has also been reduced in size as it is now one way for those on walkers.”

Every month the centre has a Feature Artist. This month it is Robyn Bailey whose work will be on display until 17 June. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Art has always been one of Robyn’s passions.” Robyn started her artistic career with a scholarship to East Sydney Technical College where she studied Commercial Art and Commercial Illustration.

Robyn retired to Anna Bay in 1997 and joined the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, The Newcastle Society of Artists and Maitland Regional Society of Artists. “Robyn has won multiple awards in art competitions and her work is represented in many private collections as well as, The Newcastle Permanent Collection, The Max Watters Collection and featured in Australian Artist magazine,” Meryl said. Robyn’s current painting direction presently lies in developing “Plein Air” skills and Portraiture and after
a long association with life drawing groups she continues to enjoy the opportunity to enhance her drawing skills. Alongside Robyn’s work the gallery has another exhibition running from 9 June – 27 July, in which visitors can experience “What’s On Your Plate?” There is also a feature of pastels on display. Known for their brilliant colors and its delicate, velvety texture, pastel is one of the most versatile and beautiful materials in the history of art. “Our pastels artists will have a variety of works demonstrating the beauty of pastel medium,” she said. IN these uncertain times, many people are looking for a better return on their investments to secure a comfortable retirement in their twilight years. nest egg and it's all due to the pandemic as he explains. “The covid thing has sparked interest in vintage cars and in particular 'muscle' cars which people have scooped up as an investment,” he said. Phil, who is registrar of the Tilligerry Car Club, has had his finger on the pulse and some of the price increases seen lately have been mind boggling. “I bought four Holden SUVs in 2015 for $2000 each and now they sell for $30,000,” he added. It's not only cars which are sought after, motorbikes can appreciate in value as well. “I have a Kawasaki Z 1900

EIGHT live music venues in Newcastle and the surrounding areas have received funding from the NSW Government’s Live Music Support Package. Across the state 162 businesses have received a share of $24 million to support live music, operational costs and payment of musicians and crew. These eight venues include Port Stephens’ own Stockton Bowling Club, as well as Newcastle venues including Kent Hotel, The Rogue Scholar, Cambridge Hotel, Lizotte’s Restaurant, The Beach Hotel,
The Newcastle Hotel and Bar On The Hill. These venues are all known for their constant and ongoing support of the live music sector in Newcastle and the surrounding regions. Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS, Australia’s music body for copyright management and royalty collection said of the grants, “APRA AMCOS data shows that live music has been operating at less than four percent of pre-COVID times. “The risk for NSW without this package was not only the loss of valuable cultural infrastructure but also thousands of jobs that are

WHEN passing Fingal Bay Beach children’s Play area I noticed how run down it was looking. It needs some attention before summer arrives. I have never been able to understand why the actual children’s play area is not covered by sun shade sails, like they are at Nelson Bay. I have written to Council but never received an answer.
During the summer months this park is well used by children. About eighteen months ago picnic seating was erected with corrugated sun shade over the picnic tables. I thought then sun shade sails would be erected over the actual play area as the slippery dip gets so hot the little ones can not use it, but that was not the case. Regards, P. WARDELL, Fingal Bay.
Call for Aboriginal participation in road projects
INDUSTRY forums are being held in Newcastle to help Aboriginal businesses and employment, skills and training providers interested in participating in road construction. Transport for NSW Director North Region Anna Zycki said the NSW and Australian governments are investing $2.4 billion on three major road upgrades to significantly improve the way local and through traffic moves around the Newcastle area. “The Newcastle Inner City Bypass between Rankin Park to Jesmond, M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace and the Hexham Straight upgrade will be transformative projects for the Hunter region and regional NSW, which will improve safety and support the local economy by providing work to suppliers and contractors,” Ms Zycki said. “Harnessing the skills of the local workforce for these projects is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to safer and stronger regions.” Ms Zycki said Transport for NSW is committed to maximising participation from
Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund are open until 25 June 2021. “The Crown Reserves Improvement Fund maintains and upgrades reserves and community facilities on Crown land for community use,” Mr Martin said. “This year the NSW Government will invest $17 million across the state to benefit community, recreational and tourism facilities on Crown land reserves. “Grant applications are open to Crown land reserve
managers and users including local councils, community groups, showgrounds and caravan parks, so I strongly encourage eligible local organisations to apply. “The fund will support improvements to community facilities while supporting local jobs, businesses and the region’s economy through upgrade work. “It will also fund bushfire management and weed and pest control on reserves.” Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said grants will support
local Aboriginal communities through sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal businesses and employment for Aboriginal people. “Two forums will be held in June and will provide an opportunity for collaboration to identify practical actions available to Transport, the Aboriginal skills, training and employment services sector, the Aboriginal business sector and major contractors to help maximise Aboriginal participation,” Ms Zycki said. “There will also be sessions about pathways for Aboriginal employment on the projects and planning for work with the Aboriginal community.” The first of the two industry forums will be held at the Travelodge Hotel Newcastle on Friday 4 June between 9am and 4pm with the second scheduled for Wednesday 30 June between 9am and 3pm. Checking out the groceries of the person in front is a pretty innocent past-time, but commenting is next-level intrusion. I've often wondered about the lives of people in front of me when they purchase 16 tins of cat food, a Tiramisu and some Deep Heat cream. A crazy cat woman who has so many cats that curl around her body at night while she's eating dessert that she has sustained a shoulder injury? Who knows. 'Enjoying date night tonight, are we? I'd go easy on the Fish Oil if I were you. That stuff can cause some quite unpleasant reflux.' More irritating, though, is the man's use of the first-person plural pronoun 'we'. It seems to insinuate his involvement, somehow, in your evening meal, and, by extension, the potential for his involvement in the more intimate example offered to show just how inappropriate it is to chat to someone about their trolley contents.

Council News PORT Stephens residents are encouraged to have a say on Council’s performance in key areas as part of the 2021 Community Satisfaction Survey. Every year, Port Stephens Council asks the local community to rate its services across a range of areas including waste, facilities, parks and gardens and libraries. General Manager Wayne Wallis says it’s a great opportunity for residents to share their feedback. “We’re committed to continuously improving our performance and the services we provide for our community,” Mr Wallis said. “Our Community Satisfaction Survey is a great opportunity for residents to let us know how we’re performing. “Our community is at the heart of everything we do — the feedback we receive helps us understand how we can better meet the needs of our residents and improve the quality of the services we provide,” he said. “The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete so I’d encourage everyone to take the time to have their say,” he added. The survey is open until 5pm Friday 18 June 2021 with results to be published on Council’s website later in the year. Third Time Lucky By Geoff WALKER IT was very much a case of 'third time lucky' for Mallabula businessman David Everingham as a snap lockdown threatened him with being isolated for the third time. His business interests see him regularly fly in and out of Victoria. Twice after disembarking from a flight into Newcastle he was tested for Covid-19 and forced into isolation for two weeks on each occasion. The tests proved negative. “I was working in a town which borders Victoria and
South Australia when yet another lockdown was announced,” he said. “My schedule had me booked to fly home from Geelong,” he stated. “I realized that this would mean another lockdown so I drove home via the western highway system. “I obtained a permit online, beat the deadline by three hours and got tested when I got back. “I self-isolated until my test results came through. “This proved negative and I've since had my first Covid jab,” he said.

Super Moon By Marian SAMPSON THIS week residents across NSW watched a spectacular Super Flower Blood Moon which is also a lunar eclipse appear in our skies Dr Ben Montet is a Scientia Lecturer at UNSW Science’s School of Physics, where he leads the Nearby Worlds and Their Stars (NEWTS) Lab, spoke to News Of The Area. “There are two things: the first is the super moon and the moon is closer to the earth. and rural areas normally see greater detail of astronomical events, on this occasion people living in urban areas would also get a great view due to the intensity of the spectacle. The Super Flower Blood Moon was best viewed between 9.10pm and 9.25pm at Nelson Bay.

Tomaree Headland Walk Reopens

THE view from the summit of Tomaree Headland is one of the top views in the state. After being closed due to a landslide after the March 2021 storms the walkway to the summit has reopened. Tomaree Head Summit walk is a 2.2km, grade 5 return hike, located in the Tomaree National Park, New South Wales. The hike should take approximately 1.5hrs to complete. The walk climbs 161 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views across Port Stephens to Seal Rocks and down through Stockton Bite towards Newcastle. Views also take in Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah islands – these nature reserves are the world’s only nesting sites for the endangered Gould's petrel. For those who take the trek and reach the summit, you will enjoy panoramic views of Yacaaba Head, Cabbage Tree, Boondelbah and Broughton Islands from the north platform. At this time of the year it is not uncommon to see the annual migration of whales from the viewing platforms. To earn a place on the NSW team, he had to undertake two state qualifiers and a state championship, where he was first place on five of six apparatuses, coming second in the state.

Josh has worked extremely hard for six years to get to this point, and even trains in Sydney, but has always been a very strong and flexible person. “When he was about three and half he had socks on and we had wooden floors. “I was cooking away in the kitchen and I heard him yell ‘Mum look at me’ and there he was, in full splits and at that moment we knew we had to get him into some sort of kindy gym and it just grew from there,” Josh’s mum Jade
I think he forgot he had feet because he was walking around the house and everywhere on his hands,” she joked. With dreams of representing Australia in the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, Josh gave some advice, “If it’s hard just push through it, anything that is hard you’ve just got to imagine what it’s going to be like when you can do it and how easy it will get.” Congratulations on an amazing success.

JOSH Teelow is a twelve year old with big dreams. Recently, Josh has travelled from Pindimar to represent NSW on the Australian stage in men’s gymnastics. He headed to Queensland with his NSW team mates, coming home with a gold medal for the NSW team, a second position overall and placements for four of six apparatuses. The journey to his success in Queensland has been a long one. With gyms closed in NSW due to COVID, Josh had to make do with Zoom training. However, Josh maintained his commitment and earned his spot in the team.
