THE Salvation Army at Anna Bay has opened its Sensory Community Garden to the public and are inviting people to come and enjoy the wonderful space and to consider volunteering. The garden is a place that anyone can visit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and offers a tranquil place where people can sit and enjoy nature. and play board games. People who are interested in volunteering at the garden are invited to come and take a look, the team are particularly looking for more gardeners for Wednesdays and Fridays. The Salvation Army project has just received

an additional grant from Port Stephens Council of $6,000 to put in pathways in the lower section of property allowing people to stroll in amongst trees and they also hope to install more seating areas where people can sit and immerse themselves in art projects.

APART from being a safe swimming place, the sandflats between Mallabula and Tanilba Bay provide a protected and popular foraging area for migratory birds. At high tide, particularly during the night, stingrays glide in and shovel up the soldier crabs. That's why there are so many dished out holes visible across the sand. Whiting and bream then scour these depressions for tasty morsels left behind. The best time to capture on camera the waders is on the incoming tide. It is then that the

curlews, snipe, godwits and tattlers work the tide line as nippers and worms clear their holes and start to feed. The eagle eyed long billed waders spot the tiny telltale bubbling fountains and thrust their bills down to snaffle them. If, however we look at the big picture on an international scale, a serious and threatening problem has developed. In fact, it has led to some three quarters of the migrant bird population disappearing in just a few decades. The first chill autumnal westerlies are the signal for the waders to head north to their breeding grounds in Asia. Indeed they can venture as far north as Siberia.

“This is a garden for everybody, a safe space to come to and get some relief from anxiety or to just enjoy nature.” Some volunteers are participating in the garden for as little as an hour others come and spend several hours. “The Rotary Club of

Salamander Bay have been a great help in getting the garden this far; they helped to get plans on paper and at working bees,” said Leadbeatter. The Sensory Community Garden is located on Port Stephens Drive at Anna Bay and everyone is welcome to share in the space.

In short, many of the birds simply starve and do not reach their northern summer nesting sites. They just don't come back. To illustrate the amazing migratory journeys of these athletic avians we turn to E7, a female bar tailed

godwit fitted with a minute tracking device. It left New Zealand and flew nonstop to China, a distance of some 10300 km. She then flew to Alaska, covering 6,500 kms. Back then she came to New Zealand after a trans Pacific flight of 11700 kms.

commemorate those who have served past and present. We commemorate the ANZACs who took the fight to the enemy in the Great War and who fought bravely and died for our freedoms. We also honour the courage, sacrifice, and self-service of the Australian servicemen and women who embody the ANZAC spirit. Today’s Australian Defence Force (ADF) continues to answer the call to serve the nation whether that is on operations abroad or closer to home. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said, “Anzac Day is truly a time for the community to unite and show our respect for those who have fallen in service and those who have serviced. “I have such pride every year looking at the vast crowds of people who attend each service to pay respects to Veterans and Defence families. “Anzac Day is a part of the nation’s fabric. For many, there is no greater day on which we honour and reflect on the service of our current and former service personnel.” Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington laid wreaths at the Karuah, Seaham and Raymond Terrace ANZAC Day services. “As time grows since the original ANZAC conflicts, so too does the significance of ANZAC Day to our community. “The large number of people participating at public services or at home on their driveways demonstrates the importance our community places on remembering the fallen and showing gratitude to all service personnel,” Ms Washington said.

“I thank all of Port Stephens’ RSL Sub Branches, especially in circumstances where it wasn’t possible to host their usual services. “It’s thanks to their efforts that the connection between past conflicts and those who fought continues today, reminding us of the sacrifice of many to allow the freedoms we all enjoy,” she said. Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC, said the sailors, soldiers and aviators of the ADF have much to be proud of. “Every day I see our people humbly carry out their duty with excellence and initiative, and display great mateship. This is the essence of the Anzac Spirit,” General Campbell said. “We remember and honour those who went before us from the Gallipoli landing in 1915 through to the campaigns and operations of today.” There are currently approximately 2500 ADF personnel deployed on operations and activities, both abroad and domestically, including ADF personnel assisting with disaster relief efforts or supporting the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We also remember and thank the families and communities who love, trust and enable our people to remain resolute in service—this too is part of the ANZAC Spirit,” General Campbell said. In one of many Light Up The Dawn commemorations locally, Major David Rodley (Army) conducted a small ceremony which 10 neighbours attended. The service included the reading of the poem In Flanders Field, an address on the significance of ANZAC Day, The Ode

Anna Bay Drainage Woes By Marian SAMPSON

WHILE the community is dealing with the cleanup after the recent weather event it appears that perhaps some of the flooding could possibly have been avoided. A source told News Of The Area, “Back in 1990 Port Stephens Council installed a pipeline and a pump to pump water away from Anna Bay residences, but that the pump was never commissioned. “In years gone by there was a drainage committee which residents paid a levy too which enabled the drains to be cleared annually.” The flood water was originally destined for Taylors Beach. However it was the source's understanding, “That due to concerns from the Department of Primary Industries around releasing acid sulphates into the environment that this practice was stopped.” There are also community concerns that the water which

ended up being pumped into the duck pond opposite Anna Bay Public School during the clean up from the March weather event was possibly contaminated with septic waste. One thing is certain, Anna Bay is subject to flooding and the community would like a working solution as they anticipate more regular severe weather events attached to global warming. A council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Council did build a pump station during this time period (1990’s). “The important thing to remember is that no infrastructure is designed to cater for or is able to cope with the size of storm we had and the amount of rain we sustained in Nelson Bay back in March. “The Anna Bay Drainage Union is a NSW State Government organisation that is still active and undertakes maintenance on their drains. “Council contributes to the

levy they charge to allow us to discharge into their drains,” the spokesperson said. Meanwhile there is a DA currently open for comment to build what has been described as an Eco-Tourism Resort on a wetland at Anna Bay and many locals are fearful of the potential for an environmental disaster and black water events for the adjacent Marine Park in the event of future flooding. This is the second time the developer has put in a DA for the site with the first DA rejected by the NSW Government. You can comment on “The Bay Resort” development at the NSW Government Planning Portal, comments close on 20 May, 2021. With Port Stephens Council having spent a small fortune on legal fees and remediation at Lagoons Estate many are wondering if we can learn from these problems before we once again build on land which is not suitable.

Works underway for new Soldiers Point revetment CONSTRUCTION of a new revetment rock wall and path along a section of Soldiers Point foreshore, north of the existing marina has commenced. The new rock revetment wall will help stabilise the area, which is currently experiencing coastal erosion and provide a safer connection between the boat ramp, car park and the marina. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the works are essential to protect and conserve our coastline. “We must stabilise this area to ensure the safety of our community which is paramount to Port Stephens Council.

“The works will also ensure we protect our unique landscape and significant Aboriginal Place to conserve its cultural significance. “The upgrades will also improve accessibility for the local community and visitors to the area around the headland,” he said. The project has been funded by both Port Stephens Council and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund. The works will be undertaken by a specialised sub-contractor experienced in working in the sensitive coastal environment and are

expected to be complete by early June 2021. Works are also planned at Spencer Park in Soldiers Point later in the year, which is set to be overhauled with a $280,000 upgrade thanks to funding from the NSW Government Stronger Country Communities Fund and Port Stephens Council. The planned works will see Spencer Park receive a brand new playground, amenities, pathways and additional park furniture. KATE Washington MP is encouraging local community groups, P&Cs, sporting clubs, and other not-forprofit groups to apply for the annual Community Building Partnership (CBP) grants program. CBP grant funding can be used for building or renovation projects, or to purchase equipment. Given the impact of COVID-19 on local not-forprofit organisations, Ms Washington is encouraging

community groups to apply for funding to kick-start their re-openings and enable services and events to resume. “Local groups have many wonderful plans and this funding can see projects become reality,” Ms Washington said. “Previous grants have been used to kick start the Port Stephens Koala Hospital, the Hawks Nest Bridge Club, Tilligerry Scout’s hall getting solar and batteries, the Wirreanda Public School

CCTV appeal following Raymond Terrace break and enter POLICE have released CCTV footage as they continue to investigate a break and enter at a Raymond Terrace business last month. About 1.20am on Thursday 4 March 2021, two men approached an automotive business on Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace, and walked around the perimeter before leaving on foot. The pair returned about 20 minutes later, before one of the men climbed under a fence and entered the premises. They left a short time later and returned with a third man about 2.20am and again entered the premises before leaving on foot along Kangaroo Street. No items were taken from the business during the incident. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were notified later that day and commenced an investigation into the incident. As police continue their inquiries, they have released CCTV footage of three men who may be

able to assist with their inquiries. The first man is described as being of a slim build, between 175cm to 180cm tall, with a lightcoloured hat, a jumper, long pants and a backpack. The second man is described as being of a medium build, between 175cm to 180cm tall, wearing a hat, a jumper and shorts. The third man is described as being of a medium build, wearing a jumper and long pants. Anyone who may have information about this incident which could assist investigators is urged to contact Raymond Terrace Police or to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. MOTORISTS are advised of changed overnight traffic conditions on the Hexham Bridge over the Hunter River at Hexham to carry out additional maintenance work. Transport for NSW will carry out the work from Monday 26 April, which includes servicing the deck and the lift span trusses. To minimise impacts to motorists, work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 5am from Mondays to Thursdays and is expected to be completed in two weeks, weather permitting. The southbound bridge will be closed during work hours with motorists diverted onto the northbound bridge, which will have one lane

operating in each direction. The pedestrian footpath will also be closed during work hours with traffic control on site to ensure safe escort of pedestrians across the bridge. The bridge’s opening span will not be in operation while the work is carried out. Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control. ISABEL Mitchell is the owner of Stockton’s very first Little Street Library, a new concept of book swapping with the central idea to ‘Take a book, leave a book.’ These libraries are entirely free to use, and encourage trust and hope in the community; there are no check ins, holds, or late return fees. Isabel’s street library even has its own name, The Little Red Street Library. Isabel spoke to News Of The Area about her library, “My hope in setting up The Little Red Street Library in Stockton was to make reading accessible to every member of our community. “I have themed and genre weeks for my library too, with some of my favourite weeks being Children’s and Young Adult literature. “I time these weeks with school holidays so it’s easy for kids to pop down and have a look.” These street libraries are all about encouraging reading, and in no way are they trying to discourage visitors of traditional libraries, they simply provide a different avenue

to receive and donate books. “It’s so important now more than ever, especially in this digital age, to encourage reading within our young people and wider community. “The connection through reading has been especially important in the last 12 months as we’ve seen more physical isolation from our communities,” said Isabel. The Little Red Street Library can even be found on Facebook, “I post pictures of the latest additions to encourage people to come down and take books, and through this Facebook page I’ve had so many interesting people contact me about donations and to request certain authors. “At the moment I’ve been on the hunt for female Australian authors for a community member who has taken up reading after the death of her husband,” Isabel told News Of The Area. “I’m so grateful for the new connections I’ve created in the Stockton community,” said Isabel. How do you leave a party in a socially acceptable way without insulting everyone? If you do the rounds and say goodbye, it can add another hour to your expected time of departure. Mrs Kate W. Dear Kate, I rarely have this problem because I avoid large social gatherings like the plague (now there's a slightly outdated simile/cliche for you). And maybe that is why I avoid them, because I can't help but overthink everything. I'd much prefer to dine out with a small group of friends. I do, however, understand your dilemma, because I have been in this situation myself, quite recently in fact, for a 50th. It seems strange to me that it is socially acceptable to drink so many strawberry daiquiri slushies that you have to hold onto a post, or to flirt outrageously with the man slicing bits of pig off a spit (dexterous, strong forearms, good in a vegetable shortage), and yet it is not okay to just slink out of a party without having the same dreary conversations you've had an hour earlier (yes, you did tell me that Luke got into a medical degree at Sydney Uni, but thanks for reminding me that our children were commando crawling at the same age, but now my kid is backpacking with a sound bowl, a book of inspirational quotes and a smudging device -- none of which he knows how to use). Or you have to endure yet another round of definitely-not-bloody-Covid-safe social gaffes where people you have met only hours earlier feel perfectly entitled to hug you so tightly that there is danger of breaking a rib or else kiss you on the lips with their beerfroth hipster moustaches (never trust a man with too much facial hair). I think if you simply say goodbye to the hosts and also that guy who said he'd fix your faulty wiring for free (assuming this wasn't a euphemism), then you've done your duty as a guest, and it is time to get the hell out of there before things get really messy. Help create a safer, more inclusive and accessible Port Stephens PORT Stephens Council is calling on the community to provide feedback on their lived experiences to help create a more socially inclusive, accessible and liveable place for all as part of the Community Wellbeing Strategy. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says that Council is taking a holistic view of wellbeing. “Wellbeing is all about feeling safe, included and able to participate in your local community. Wellbeing is something we want for all of our people — that’s why we’re working on a strategy to create a more liveable place for all,” he said. “This strategy will help us continue to create a place that fosters positive attitudes and behaviours for people of all abilities and backgrounds.” Mayor Palmer is encouraging the community to have their say and complete the survey before Friday 14 May 2021. “We want to hear from our community about how safety, accessibility, inclusion, housing security, contribute to and impact on their wellbeing.

“We’d particularly like to hear from people living with a disability and disability service providers about what matters most to them to make sure our actions will make a real difference. “Your individual experiences and stories will help inform our strategy and make sure we are equipped to create safe, welcoming, liveable places and spaces across our region,” he said. Council’s Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Amber Herrmann says community feedback is central to understanding and meeting the needs of our community. “To be successful, we’re preparing this strategy in consultation with our community and our employees to reflect the needs of the population and visitors to the region. “We’re also undertaking an internal awareness campaign to ensure accessibility and inclusion are front of mind for our people at Council. “We recently held a wheelchair challenge in our Administration Building to give

our employees, leaders and Mayor first-hand experience living with a disability. This helped create more awareness about the challenges people face when completing everyday

tasks,” she said. The survey is open until 5pm Friday 14 May 2021 and every survey participant has the chance to win 1 of 4 gift vouchers valued at $50.

In Sydney’s Lavender Bay parklands, host Costa Georgiadis returns to the garden of Wendy Whiteley. New Police Recruits for the Hunter SEVENTEEN new probationary constables will commence duties in Hunter Police Districts after they attested at an attestation ceremony at the Goulburn Police Academy. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the newest recruits in Goulburn. “Police officers perform a crucial role in protecting the community. As the

THE recent floods delayed the roll-out of the much anticipated Covid-19 vaccine but the nationwide distribution is now back on track. After an initial shipment of 80 doses of imported vaccine, two Tilligerry medical centres are now getting as many as 100 shots of the Australian made 'AstraZeneca' product each week.

A Guide To Street Libraries By Tara CAMPBELL LITTLE Street Libraries have been popping up around Australia rapidly in the past twelve months. Australia’s first Little Street Library was created in 2015 and now, in New South Wales alone, there are over 1278 street libraries presented in many ways. From fridges to TV Cabinets, book shelves and many other homemade creations, street libraries are occurring more frequently. Street Libraries are a mini collection of books centred around the concept of ‘leave a book, take a book’. They are entirely free and there are no cards or fees for late returns. In the past twelve months, many residents have created their own street libraries to unite the community in a time where many could not visit a library. Many members of the public are always on the lookout for little street libraries in the area. Isabel Mitchell, who owns The Little Red Street Library in Stockton said, “I’m so grateful for the new connections I’ve created

have chosen to start their careers in the Hunter district,” Mr Martin said. “On behalf of our community, I am pleased to be able to welcome our newest police officers.” Class 346 includes 149 men and 55 women. Some recruits entered the NSW Police Academy straight from school or university, while others left established professional careers and

trades. The recruits have completed eight months of foundational training and those allocated to commands will report to their stations from Monday 26 April 2021. Indigenous Youth Art Program By Tara CAMPBELL

TOMAREE Neighbourhood Centre has teamed up with Koori Colours Art Gallery to bring a free Art Program for Indigenous Youth to the area. This program launched on Monday 26 April until 19 May 2021 and will be running Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:45PM4:45PM and is generously funded by AGL Australia. It will run at The Centre For Hope in Tanilba Bay. cancer. The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Network spend many hours driving

local women to treatment in Newcastle and Maitland but alongside the driving are other tasks that need to be done including being active on the committee. It’s hard to be on treatment and it takes it out of you, driving after chemo just isn’t a great idea, and driving for over an hour when you are tired, and maybe not feeling too well isn’t safe for you or other drivers on the roads. Volunteer drivers are on a roster so they can plan around their contribution to the community. For 20 years the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group have been driving ladies and men to treatment, mowing lawns and even babysitting. Over 400 patients have been shown a little extra care and support by members

of the community who take over the driving and let those doing it tough sit back and relax on their way to and from treatment but that’s not all they do. Christine Walton of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area, “We really need some people on the committee to assist with getting patients needs accessed and to be a point of contact for patients.” The service is seeking volunteers that can coordinate and help deliver to meet the needs of the patients. Some patients have children so the service provides baby-sitting. Others have a large yard that they can’t mow so the service sends in the lawn mowers.

SHOAL Bay’s shopping precinct has become a little safer with the installation of CCTV surveillance. This comes after an assault on a Body Corporate Member (Mr Rawson) when skateboarders were asked

to stop skating for safety and insurance purposes. A representative of the body corporate told News Of The Area, “Senior Constable Michael Shcarf has confirmed this week that the offender pleaded guilty at Raymond Terrace and is on a 9 months Good Behaviour bond.”

There is no one size fits all approach to those diagnosed with breast cancer that the service supports, what they do is figure out the best way that they can meet the needs of the individual, taking off the pressure and allowing them to focus on their health. Today the service is at risk because there simply aren’t enough volunteers to meet the demand for the service especially on the committee where they need some extra help for a few hours a week. The group is also working towards getting a chemo chair and qualified staff at Tomaree Hospital which would make treatment far more accessible for patients. Turning On The Lights

IT’s all too true – it’s easy to make a baby in the dark, but it is much harder to deliver one there. The Rotary Club of Salamander Bay has been actively working on international projects in Papua New Guinea for many years specifically supporting Save The Kula Babies. Now they are working on a project that will put light into the hands of midwives not only in Papua New Guinea but in other remote communities around the world. Of course this is not the only Rotary Club involved in making women’s health and education for our nearest neighbours a priority. The Rotarians at the Rotary Club Of Salamander Bay are putting some research and

development into power – specifically solar power that is highly portable. Teaming up with Durst they have developed a Solar Powered Case that is literally turning on the lights for midwives and doctors in remote areas across Pacific and Asian nations. So far the club has commissioned and tested three cases, with more planned on the way. The case has been developed, first and foremost, to provide light in remote health centres, aiding health workers where the availability of electricity is problematic at the best of times. The idea is not new, the redevelopment by Durst is. There are currently some 5000 similar units out of the US distributed across Africa, India and Nepal. However, these units are

prohibitive cost wise to land in Australia. The ability to provide portable lights for village birthing assistants is a major priority in areas where women often give birth in village huts or village health centres where the light from kerosene lanterns or mobile phones is otherwise the best available alternative. The Solar Case also has application in regions that have been subject to natural disaster where there has been a disruption to conventional power. Providing immediate light and ability to recharge phones etc to maintain emergency contact channels. Nelson Bay Golf Club Invests $2.3 Million in Sustainable Irrigation System By Marian SAMPSON

NELSON Bay Golf Club has embarked on a long-term project which will be more sustainable, saving labour, water and power, increasing irrigation efficiency and improving the landscape of the 27 hole golf course. The club is investing $2.3million on a complete replacement of the irrigation system on the 27 hole courses which sits on 175 acres of land. The investment in the system is expected to last around 30 years. The course is not only a beautiful place to play golf but it provides a safe habitat for a range of local wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, native birds and the occasional goanna. The scope of the replacement is staggering with 1,400 sprinkler heads, use of valve head sprinklers, 40km of irrigation pipe and a state of the art Rainbird

Smart Parking: Big Brother Is Watching You! By Marian SAMPSON SMART Parking in the Bay means that Big Brother is watching you or at least your car! The introduction of Smart Parking has caused plenty of headaches for locals and visitors already raising the ire of business owners who are concerned about the negative impact they will have on visitors shopping time in the Bay. But there is at least one bit of good news. A Council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Permits do not need to be renewed for this financial year however, renewals will be required by

30 June 2022.” Originally permits needed to be renewed in June 2021. “Council will send a communication to permit holders closer to the renewal date.” Sensors have been installed into the parking spots in Nelson Bay over the past few days. The vehicle sensor is positioned in the centre of the parking bay, and detects the car as it enters the parking space. The sensor constantly monitors the vehicle’s presence in the bay until the driver re-enters the vehicle and the vehicle departs. “Information about the arrival

and departure of a vehicle is sent back to our (Councils) network, where it is recorded and managed according to the time of day, the bay location, any applicable parking restrictions, and any additional event or clearway information that may affect the status of the parking bay and the vehicle parked within it.” While locals can park free with a permit, time limits still apply. “This means you can still be fined if you overstay the signposted time limits. “The sensors tell us how long vehicles have been parking for however they don’t know if you have a Disability Parking Pass. “Our compliance team checks for

OUR pristine beaches are the setting for two sets of State Surfing Titles which are being held at Port Stephens with some of the state’s best stand-up paddle boarders and longboarders competing across two events. The two-state title events will form the Port Stephens Surf Festival and decide the NSW Teams for the upcoming Australian SUP Titles and the Australian Longboard Titles. 170 surfers and paddle boarders are expected to take to the surf during the event which will see longboards run from 29 April – 1 May and the SUP's from 2 May – 4 May.
