Mark hot on the trail of his forebears.
WITH cross referenced computer records and private companies researching our history, it's a relatively easy task these days to trace our forebears. Lemon Tree Passage’s Mark Skidmore is one local resident who has traced both sides of his family tree extensively, with one of the branches leading all the way back to Catherine Parr. Catherine was the last wife of Henry VIII and survived the chopping block as she outlived him. She was also the most married queen of England, having a total of four husbands before her untimely death in childbirth at the age of 36. Mark's research discovered other prominent relatives while peeling back the pages. A certain Rev John Ashley founded the Mission for Seafarers in the 1800s and before him, Dr Stephen Radcliffe was a judge in Ireland in the 1700s. The royal connection came in the 1400s when documents revealed that a Radcliffe was the cousin of Catherine. Another family history researcher, Sean Brennan, has the unusual distinction of having two

regions include masking up with mask wearing now mandatory when outside your home, except when exercising. People leaving Greater Sydney and travelling more than 50km now require a permit. Tradies are also facing restrictions including travel bans and vaccination requirements and testing regimes with these varying depending on which area of Sydney they are based in. Policing of the Sydney lockdown is increasing, with road stops on major roads leading into the region including the M1. Cases are still increasing in NSW and Victoria. At 8pm on 21 August, NSW set a new grim record of 830 cases in one day and now has a total of 10,255 active cases recorded; these numbers are growing exponentially. Locally however, Port Stephens has recorded eight cases in the last four weeks with 13,549 tests completed. Pleasingly, the Port Stephens LGA went several days with zero cases recorded. The Midcoast Council LGA has recorded just one case in recent weeks. Meanwhile, there are even more places and ways to get your Covid-19 vaccination, with a range

"WE are really keen, to really sprint. This is a race." That is the message from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian in regards to getting the state’s vaccination numbers up and combating the Delta strain of Covid-19. A Hunter New England Local Health District spokesperson told News Of The Area, “In the Port Stephens area, AstraZeneca is available at local GPs and there are a growing number
of pharmacies now offering the vaccine. “In the Port Stephens area, AstraZeneca is available at local GPs and there are a growing number of pharmacies now offering the vaccine. “People can check their eligibility and make bookings at their nearest available location via the Commonwealth Government’s eligibility checker. “Participating pharmacies and medical centres are listed here, and more will be added as pharmacies continue to
join the program. “The AstraZeneca vaccine is currently available to anyone 18 years and over, however informed consent needs to be provided. “This means understanding the risks and benefits of vaccination using the latest information and advice that is available on the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). “If you have any questions about receiving AstraZeneca, please speak with your

AT a time when we need all the help we can get the Port Stephens-Hunter Police has welcomed six new recruits. It means new boots on the beat. The six new officers are among the 182 police recruits who were sworn-in as probationary constables at a private attestation ceremony, held in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, in Goulburn last week. Member for Port Stephens Kate Wasington told News Of The Area, “It’s wonderful to welcome six new police recruits to our district. “They’ll be working between Port Stephens and
Maitland, and under our strong local leadership team in the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District. “These new probationary officers are getting a great start to their policing career, and our community is getting additional boots on the ground.” “We know that local police have been working tirelessly during the lockdown, making sure people are complying with health orders and keeping our community safe. “Having more hands on deck, particularly during this difficult time, will bring some well-deserved relief,” she said.

Appeal to find missing teenage girl – Medowie POLICE are appealing for public assistance to help locate a teenage girl missing from the Hunter region. Tylah Weatherburn, aged 13, was last seen at her home on Bower Road, Medowie, about 8.30pm on Sunday 22 August 2021. Officers attached to Port StephensHunter Police District were notified of her disappearance on Monday 23 August 2021 and commenced an investigation into her whereabouts. Police and family have concerns for Tylah’s welfare because of her age. She is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 155cm tall, of thin build, with long blonde hair and green eyes. Tylah is believed to be wearing a black Tommy Hilfiger jumper, grey track pants and black Nike runners. She is known to frequent the Raymond Terrace, Medowie and possibly Tenambit areas. Anyone who may have seen Tylah, or knows of their whereabouts, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. PORT Stephens Koala Hospital is one of the region's most important environmental not-for-profit organisations. It works across the region, including the Myall Coast, delivering quality care for koalas in need. It is hard work, mostly done by volunteers, harder still when not all of the koalas that come into their care “make it”. That is how Leah Anderson first got involved in the Port Stephens Koala Hospital. The Port Stephens Mayoral candidate has been on the board of the organisation for some years and has also been a volunteer both at the hospital and as a home carer. Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “Tolley was in home care with me in early 2020.” She is very proud to step up into my next important role in the community as CEO of Port
Stephens Koala Hospital. “This last week I stepped down from three boards, Business Port Stephens (President for four years), Destination Port Stephens (Director for almost two years) and Port Stephens Koalas (Director for one year).” Anderson’s most recent journey started with volunteering at Port Stephens Koala Hospital almost two years ago. “In that time I have learnt to be a Koala carer, Home Carer, I am the Saturday AM shift supervisor, and I also am part of the training team and I help deliver induction training to our new volunteers. “I am delighted to bring my many years of finance and management experience in the corporate world to help support and strengthen Port Stephens Koala Hospital as we continue to grow (rapidly) and to work on our plans for the future.
“In the last month I have recruited two new Vet Nurses to Port Stephens Koala Hospital to enable us to strengthen our skillset to provide seven day a week qualified care for our local koalas in care at the hospital. “I look forward to working in my new capacity as CEO with our team of 150 volunteers, our staff, our board of directors, and our

WITH boat ramps still open and a beautiful 27 degree day greeting local residents, the Lemon Tree Passage waterfront was alive with activity on Sunday 22 August. Indeed, in scenes reminiscent of Easter or the Christmas break, it was hard to find a parking spot for cars and trailers in Henderson Park. Recreational fishing and boating are two activities exempt from the current lockdown rules and those taking to the water can go more or less anywhere in the enclosed waters of Port Stephens. Masks and social distancing rules still apply and boaties should check the requirements before venturing out. As well as this, the sandflats
and foreshore at Tanilba Bay and Mallabula teemed with recreational exercisers, dog walkers, nipper pumpers, photographers and fisherfolk. Other positive feedback from businesses show an increase in cake sales from hot bread shops as locked down locals seek 'comfort food’. With city restaurants closed, a downturn in the oyster industry would be expected. This is not the case as sales are strong with people wanting to spoil themselves with top of the range seafood. As well as this, Club Lemon Tree established an upmarket outdoors food servery and sold out quickly on the first two evenings of its operation.

Residential Tenancy Support extended By Tara CAMPBELL
THE NSW Government has announced an increased financial support program for tenants and landlords through the extension of the Residential Tenancy Support Package. During the past eighteen months, NSW residents have suffered inconsistent lockdowns and losses of work, all whilst facing the worst housing crisis the Port Stephens
region has seen in decades. Port Stephens Member of Parliament, Kate Washington addressed the housing crisis at Parliament house earlier in the year, pleading for action to be taken “What we are seeing now is that this indifference has created a community-wide housing crisis. “It's not just low income families now suffering from this (housing crisis), it’s double income households that cannot secure a place to live and the COVID-19 pandemic is not making it easier,”
Ms Washington said. To support this, the NSW Government’s Residential Tenancy Support package will now be paid for a second month and eligible landlords will not be able to apply for up to $3,000 to cover the months from 14 July 2021, under the condition that they have reduced rent for their tenant/s by at least that much. Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, Kevin Anderson says that the NSW Government is committed to ongoing support for

residential tenants and landlords throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “Keeping people safe doesn’t just mean reducing the health threats of the virus. “It is vital we help keep a roof over the heads of those who may be suffering financial hardship at this difficult time. “It’s hard enough having to lockdown in your home while we stop the spread of the virus, but this NSW Government support means you can do that without fear of being evicted,” Mr Anderson said.
Landlords who have already applied can make an additional application and have the option to apply for the COVID-19 land tax benefit instead of applying for the Residential Tenancy Support Payment. Eligible COVID-19 impacted residential tenants who cannot meet their residential rent payments will be protected from eviction during the moratorium period commencing from 14 July and finishing at the end of 11 September 2021.

Community rallies against Covid-19
WHILE Sydney battles the biggest outbreak of COVID-19 seen yet in Australia, locals around the state are getting tested to protect their regions. In Raymond Terrace the need for testing facilities saw a pop-up clinic added to cope with demand. Residents queue in their cars waiting for their swabs while staff are burdened by the challenge of servicing everyone while wearing restrictive PPE. Health care workers have borne the burden of COVID-19 more than anyone else. They face the risk of infection, the discomfort of PPE and at times they have faced outrage at delays. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Our community is so grateful to all the frontline health workers who’ve been stepping up every day to protect us from this virus. “By now, almost everyone in Port Stephens has relied on our hardworking COVID testing staff, at one stage or another. “Without exception, in my own experience and from everyone else’s feedback, the workers have always been wonderful.” Local businesses are also doing it tough, yet even in uncertain times some have stepped up to make the day a little brighter for the COVID-19 testing teams. “It’s terrific to see our community returning the favour and generously showing their appreciation to these frontline workers. “KFC Raymond Terrace delivered

Place plans in development for towns across Port Stephens IT’S easier than ever for communities in Port Stephens to understand and get involved in planning for the future of their area. Place plans are being developed for a number of towns across Port Stephens, with a strong focus on the values of the local community and their priorities for the future. Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator Liz Lamb says it’s a way of planning that puts people and places first. “Place plans start with our community — your values and priorities for your place. “Together, we identify the unique local character of a place and the ways our community can enhance or protect these aspects. “A place plan is guided by strategic documents — we put a local filter on all of our Council’s existing strategies to make one easy-to-read, actionoriented plan. “It also includes analysis of potential opportunities

HEART health is often something we don’t think about, but if you are over 65 it is time to get real about your heart health. During the pandemic many people have put off getting a check up with their doctor or have migrated to telehealth, however some things need to be checked in person. High blood pressure and other conditions can be hidden without symptoms telling us that there is a potential problem. Heart doctors are issuing this public health plea to help curb our nation’s rising rates of undiagnosed, but easily treated, heart valve disease – the malfunctioning of one or more heart valves that disrupts blood flow through the heart. There is a simple test that can alert your doctor of underlying conditions and help you to avoid undiagnosed and unnecessary health complications. It’s as simple as getting your doctor to listen to your heart. The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute has released a whitepaper, which clearly warns that some types of heart disease can go unrecognised, undiagnosed and untreated, with devastating complications. DATES have been confirmed for the 2022 NSW Seniors Festival. The festival, which has become an annual event, will be running from 25 March to 3 April 2022 with ten days of activities across the state. 2022’s theme will be ‘Reconnect’, an ode to reconnecting after a socially and physically distanced year. In 2021, Port Stephens Seniors celebrated with a series of activities including swimming at Tomaree Swimming Pool, Boomerang Bags arts and crafts, low impact martial arts, lunches, live entertainment and jukebox sessions. Minister for Seniors, Natalie Ward said the 2022 festival would build on a strong legacy of showing NSW
seniors of their value to the community. “The 2022 NSW Seniors Festival will deliver worldquality entertainment and engaging activities for our over 60s, with an important emphasis on COVID-safe environments. “This is the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and I’m urging our seniors to mark the dates in their calendars. “It gives us something to look forward to during these times of uncertainty,” Mrs Ward said. The festival schedule is still in the works, with a free Premier Gala Concert, NSW Seniors Festival Expo and NSW Seniors Festival Comedy Show already confirmed. For the first time ever, she is looking terrible in comparison to the rest of us. Last week our manager asked if she was feeling unwell, and in the same conference call, he complimented me on my youthful glow. Should I come clean or revel in it a bit longer?
PLENTY OF TIME BUT NO FUNDS? How can I update my home with minimal outlay? IF you’re fairly happy with your home’s presentation but are looking to change things up a little, here are some lockdown projects with minimal financial outlay. You can accomplish so much with so little! Firstly, new feature cushions cost very little, even less if you’re able to source some new zip-on covers for your current cushions. Remove tired window treatments or wash them for a refresh, if they are still in good condition and fashionable. Work with your room’s colour scheme and layer with textures and patterns to really make your room pop. Rugs are a wonderful addition without overwhelming the eye. They’re also a great distraction if you have problem carpet areas, or floorboards look a little too bare. For the cost of a tin of paint, roller and brushes, you may like to refresh with a coat of paint. Neutrals always work best, particularly if you are considering selling. I always say it’s the cheapest way to totally transform a home. And don’t forget your green friends. Strategically placed potted plants; hanging, floor, benchtop or windowsills go with any décor and happily fill awkward spaces. If you’re a known plant killer though consider the fake ones. There are some really fabulous imitation plants available these days that you need to touch before you realise that they are not actually real. Maybe you need to reduce ornamental clutter or too much furniture in your spaces. Sometimes simply re-arranging furniture makes a massive difference to a rooms look, feel and flow. These simple things can give you a fresh new look with minimum outlay! Have fun! Denise

FRRR and Suncorp launch $1 million disaster recovery partnership THE Suncorp Group has pledged $1 million to the Foundation For Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) for a dedicated program to support rural Australian communities impacted by significant natural disasters. The first Rebuilding Futures program grant round opened last Thursday and will close on 15 September, with $200,000 available through grants of up to $15,000 each for local community groups and not-forprofits in remote, rural and regional areas impacted by flooding in March 2021. Successful grants will be announced in November 2021. Natalie Egleton, CEO of FRRR said the Foundation is delighted to be partnering with the Suncorp Group on the dedicated funding initiative. “From our many years working alongside communities as they recover from natural disasters, we have learnt that recovery is a marathon and local community groups and not-for-profits need funding for diverse recovery initiatives, as their needs evolve over time,” Ms Egleton said. Suncorp Group CEO Steve Johnston launched the first round of grants to help NSW and Queensland communities impacted by flooding in March 2021. “These communities are dealing not only with COVID-19, but the significant impacts of flooding,” Mr Johnston said.
Port Stephens Council takes two top spots at Hunter Business Awards PORT Stephens Council's employee wellness program PSCare and the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary have been announced finalists at the 2021 Hunter Business Awards this week. Group Manager Corporate Services Tim Crosdale said the announcement is a tribute to the work employees have put in the last 12 months. “Despite the challenges we’ve experienced due to COVID-19 over the last year, we’re thrilled to be announced finalists in the ‘Outstanding employer of Choice’ and Startup Superstar’ categories for

two of our biggest recent projects. “Everyone involved should be extremely proud of what they have achieved for our employees through the PSCare program and koala conservation in the Port Stephens region – which both are extremely important in our current climate,” he said. And now, on Zoom, she looks more like frumpy Edith, particularly with her computer angled in such a way as to give the impression she has a double chin, and the fluorescent lighting from her bathroom (she's locked herself in there to get away from her husband, who is also working from home) showing up every imperfection from the rash caused by her mask to her hair roots, now letting everyone in the office know that her glossy blonde locks were from a packet. Meanwhile, you, with your advanced computer skills have a French Polynesian virtual background that brings out your blue eyes, your flawless complexion, and your glowing tan thanks to some handy filter work. If she is one of those annoying types that used to say things like, 'Claudia, you're looking tired today; would you like me to order you some Rise & Shine supplements? They support your metabolism and build your immunity' then I'd let Miranda suffer until the end of lockdown (which at the rate we are going could be 2023). There is now something you can do that is free for many residents, and it could benefit your career opportunities in the long run. The NSW Government has announced an additional 3000 training places for people across NSW to skill up at home during lockdown. An extra 60 short courses are now on offer to study for free including business skills, mental health, marketing, finance and IT skill sets. Best of all, these courses can be done from the safety of your home. Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the courses are an expansion of the 10 free skillsets recently announced by TAFE NSW. “We know there is great demand for training at the moment, which is why we have added additional free courses and more training places so people can come out of lockdown with skills they
can take with them into the workplace,” Mr Lee said. “The free courses are available to anyone across the State who is unable to work due to public health orders.” “We have specifically targeted those LGA’s and suburbs in lockdown and are working with local communities and industry to understand what skills are in demand and where shortages exist. “There has never been a more crucial time to upskill or reskill through the pandemic and the NSW Government is here to support the people of NSW every step of the way. “This isn’t just about upskilling though. In these difficult times, the opportunities provided by these courses can have a hugely beneficial impact on the well- being of participants.” Training will be funded through the JobTrainer program, which has already seen more than 120,000 people in NSW skill up since it was announced in October last year. PORT Stephens Council has won a Gold Award in the Australasian Reporting Awards for its accessible and transparent 2019 to 2020 annual report. The awards provide a benchmark for world best practice in annual reports and recognise those who achieve this high standard. Council’s General Manager Wayne Wallis accepted the award on Council’s behalf at an online ceremony this afternoon. “We’re very proud to have achieved the gold standard of reporting. “It’s a wonderful recognition of our Council’s commitment to open, transparent and accessible reporting. "Our annual report is a key way we hold ourselves accountable to our community – where we report openly and honestly about our highlights and challenges for the year, and look ahead to what’s next,” he said. “Our theme for the report was connection, which has been more important than ever during COVID-19. “We chose to reflect this theme on our cover by featuring beautiful textile artworks that were knitted by our community during lockdown.” Mr Wallis said the annual report is just one way Council is focused on accessible and transparent communication. “We’re continually improving the way we communicate with our community by writing in plain English, using graphics to tell the story and making sure our content is accessible for all.

THE current statewide Covid-19 lockdown has dovetailed well for the makeover of the Tilligerry Aquatic Centre. This means that the downtime for the pool relining will not encroach on the summer swimming season. Now over 20 years old, the pool was beginning to show its age with bubbles forming between the original tiles and the overlaying vinyl liner. It was therefore decided to strip both old surfaces and fibreglass the pool to ensure its integrity for years to come. We are indeed lucky to have the facility as demographers all those years ago stated that some 12,000 residents were needed to make the facility financially viable.

There were fewer than 6000 people here at the time. Indeed Port Stephens Council set a target of $100,000 for the community to raise before they would proceed with the complex. This was achieved and the council chipped in the rest of the $1 million needed for construction. Currently 'Belgravia' has the contract for the three council pools and they are closed in rotation for maintenance. Last year, Tilligerry did not shut for winter maintenance as both Tomaree and Lakeside swim centres were out of service for prolonged periods due to technical issues. This gave dedicated fitness fanatics and squad swimmers an option with their season tickets valid for Tilligerry.
