Motor vehicle crime in Port Stephens By Tara CAMPBELL

CRIME in the Port Stephens area is at a high, particularly in regards to stolen motor vehicles. Since 1 January 2021, there have been over 140 incidents reported relating to motor vehicles, with 64 in January, 47 in February and 29 in March. Detective Superintendent Chad Gillies of the Port StephensHunter Police District said, “The vast majority of these crimes are from unsecured vehicles with items left inside. “My message to everyone is, please lock your cars up. “Don't leave items visible in your car or in your vehicle especially if they're valuable.” The commander said the

DISASTER recovery assistance is now available in the Armidale, Bellingen, Central Coast, Cessnock City, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour City, Dungog, Kempsey, Lake Macquarie, Maitland City, Mid-Coast, Nambucca Valley, Newcastle City, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Port Stephens, and Tenterfield local government areas following severe storms and floods from 10 March 2021 onwards. Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said the storms and floods have caused widespread damage

across the impacted council areas. “This is a serious event with heavy rainfall, severe winds and widespread flooding, resulting in a high number of flood rescues, damage to roads and properties and a large-scale, multi-agency response led by the NSW SES,” Minister Littleproud said. “Through the DRFA, a range of practical assistance measures are now available to help people get back on their feet and help councils get on with the clean-up and repairs to infrastructure.” New South Wales Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said communities experienced significant disruption due to heavy rainfall and flooding over several days,

including damage to and closure of roads and schools. “As NSW continues to deal with this serious weather event, today’s announcement will help reassure those already affected that there is assistance available to cover the costs associated with the operational response and support households, small businesses, primary producers, not-for-profit organisations and councils as they continue to repair the damaged,” Minister Elliott said. Assistance available under the DRFA may include: ● help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged ● support for affected local Councils to help with the

Pot holes will be the least of Council’s worries with the damage bill for Foreshore Drive alone being extensive. The wash out at Foreshore Drive in Salamander Bay has some thinking perhaps it is time to rethink this roadway. The road is a scar through valuable koala habitat and is an area known for koala sightings and vehicle strikes. Foreshore Drive was recently resealed and traffic calming infrastructure was installed which saw the “short-cut” through the wetlands closed for many weeks. The only piece of the road

not repaired or made safe for pedestrians was the Mambo Culvert which is now completely washed out. The culvert has long been blocking the natural flow of water from Salamander Bay into the wetland and has been a dangerous pinch point for pedestrians travelling along Foreshore Drive. The water that has rushed through the washout culvert has carried out stagnant water and the wetland will for the time being benefit from clean water from the bay being pushed through with the tide. Foreshore Drive is going to be a costly roadway to maintain going into the future, rising sea

Endless Summer entertains community

ENDLESS Summer is the newest incentive by the Port Stephens Council, to support artists and creatives in the area. The event will bring live music and entertainment to the Shoal Bay Foreshore Reserve each Saturday until 10 April 2021. Y NSW Youth Parliament application deadline extended

YOUNG local changemakers can still make their mark on NSW politics with the Y NSW extending applications for Youth Parliament.

The deadline to apply for the youth empowerment program has been pushed to Friday, March 26 5pm. Y NSW Youth Parliament

brings together young people in years 10 through 12 (or equivalent age) to lead, learn and connect through parliamentary education,

community engagement, confidence building and teamwork. Y NSW Executive Leader of Youth and Community Louisa McKay said securing a diverse representation of the state’s youth was key to the success of the program.

PORT Stephens is home to some very special community groups. One of these is the Port Stephens Friendship Group. Fran Wathen joined the group 10 years ago when she came to the Bay and loves the sense of community. We are no longer confined to our four walls with COVID-19 restrictions lifting and Fran wants to encourage people to step out and get back to where you used to be or to take a new step forward with new activities. Fran Wathen told News Of The Area, “This is what keeps you young and going, it is being active and being out there on the go. Fran recently took on the presidency of Friendship Group which meets once a month for planning purposes and holds recurring activities and outings every month. “There’s movie days, bowls days and special events.” “Members of The Port Stephens Friendship Group recently enjoyed a cruise on Imagine which is celebrating 25 years of cruising on beautiful Port Stephens. “It has been some time since they have been able to get back to all their regular meetings and events, but this week they certainly enjoyed a wonderful time together on the water. “There was also resumption of social bowls and lunch at Nelson Bay Bowling Club, regular movie days at the cinema, happy hours at Roy Wood Reserve, and their regular meetings are now allowed to have 90 people in attendance,” she said. Port Stephens Friendship Group has 101 members and around 50 potential new friends for you to meet at each meeting. This group welcomes new members to come and make new friends whilst enjoying a happy and active life in retirement. Alternatively a turn to the right would take them along our most beautiful walks – the Bridle path to Bagnall Beach. Now when people walk to the end of Teramby Road they end up doubling back on their steps. This landslip creates an opportunity for the foreshore precinct to deliver better gardens, without weeds like lantana. This area could become a highlight part of the foreshore rather than a messy eyesore. Margaret suggests that if this is an option that you would like to see considered, or you have another great idea which will improve rather than simply rebuild, please contact your East Ward Councillors and ask for it to be considered

Hunter Horse Haven Inundated By Victoria HENDERSON

WHEN the skies opened last week many four-legged residents of Port Stephens were caught by the deluge. Hunter Horse Haven is a local horse rescue which provides community programs. The charity normally covers 80 acres of lush pasture. “By midnight the big paddock on the right started getting bad,” said the charity’s founder, Deb Barber. “We had to rescue our rescue horses. “All they have left now out of 80 acres is half a hill.”

There are currently thirty horses at the haven, twentytwo of those are ‘turned out’, living in paddocks. The remaining eight have higher needs- requiring rugs, shelter and round the clock attention. When the water started rising it did not catch Deb by surprise. She has long planned for such events, seeing it as part of her responsibility to the animals. What did surprise her was how fast and deep the water was when it came. Faithful volunteers answered Deb’s call to move the horses to higher ground. This meant people and animals slogging through flood water.

Authorities often warn against this due to the dangers of contamination and submerged debris. In the case of the horses, it was a do-or-die situation. Some of the animals being moved were ponies and already at risk due to their size. “The things we need the most right now are rugs and feed,” Deb explained. “Even horses, in this weather, they get wet and cold and start to shiver. “At the moment- with no grass, we’re having to hand feed and we’re going to have to get feed in for all of them.” Deb and her volunteers face many challenges. Many of the animals are already in delicate health

and will be vulnerable to the effects of the flooding. Hunter Horse Haven is

A chat with Mayor Ryan Palmer WE’VE experienced some heavy rain and downpours this month with severe weather lashing our coast and inland areas. The damage across our region has been substantial and I thank everyone for your patience while we restore damaged roads, drainage and other infrastructure across Port Stephens. We are committed to rebuilding what we’ve lost so things can get back to normal as soon as possible and we aren’t wasting any time — works to replace the culvert on Foreshore Drive are already underway and will be built to last for many years to come. I want to thank our Council work crews who have been on the ground from the beginning to protect the community and are now repairing the damage. The community spirit across our region is like no other and I am so proud to see how we continue to pull together and help each other during these times — thank you to you all for keeping Port Stephens safe. Easter Fundraising Appeal WOOLWORTHS customers can help support the mobility and medical equipment needs of children and families across NSW and ACT with the launch of the Easter Fundraising Appeal in support of Variety - The Children’s Charity. Customers at Woolworths Medowie, Raymond Terrace, Raymond Terrace North and across NSW can support the Easter Fundraising Appeal by simply adding a $2 Easter egg shaped token to their shop or rounding up their purchase to the nearest dollar when they spend over $30 at the self service check-out. The appeal is running in stores and online from March 17 to April 6, 2021. You see, it was drought that sent them from their natural habitat of the inland marshes to take up residence in coastal areas and it looks like they are here to stay. Sydney alone boasts some 10,000 of these avian vagrants. They have even been given unflattering names such as 'bin chicken', “tip turkeys' and 'picnic pirates.' This is because they are bold birds which pester picnickers for food and rummage through garbage bins. They have, however

Indeed our Council mowing teams just can't keep up with their rotational maintenance program of parks and reserves. Apart from phone calls about potholes created by the incessant rain, Port Stephens Council has been inundated with complaints about the

long grass. You just won't find the white ibis (Investikiorinis molucca) annoying people in Henderson Park at Lemon Tree Passage these days. They aren't even fighting the pelicans and seagulls for scraps of food and discarded chips. You see, they have taken up station in the large grassy park near the sewerage pump house and are snaffling the grubs and worms which have been forced to the surface by the rains. If nothing else, this change back to their natural diet can only help their health. We’ll just have to see what happens when the dry weather returns. Meanwhile enjoy your ibis free picnics while you can.

Spearfisherman reunites with rescuers A SPEARFISHERMAN has reunited with the officers who saved him from the ocean after being separated from his boat and circled by a bull shark in Port Stephens. On Saturday 26 December 2020, Matty Smith was spearfishing off his boat with a friend near Broughton Island, Port Stephens, when they surfaced to find the boat missing. After experiencing an engine problem, the boat drifted from the spearfishermen before the skipper on board – a friend of the pair – let off a flare. Senior constables Glen Young and Nick Leach from the Port Stephens Marine Area Command found the boat and picked up the skipper before commencing a search for the stranded spearfishermen. Senior Constable Nick Leach said they were searching for the men in difficult conditions. “The wind had got up so there were whitecaps on the water, so finding a couple of divers in the water was

pretty hard, like finding a needle in a haystack. “They’re dressed in camouflage gear,” said Senior Constable Leach. The men, aged 36 and 28, were attempting to swim about five kilometres to

shore and had been circled by a bull shark before being found by police about 4.25pm. “I looked up and saw the red and blue lights and the relief and gratitude I had then.

“I thought, I need to get on that boat, especially after seeing the shark,” said Matty Smith. “Had the officers not arrived, the thoughts I was having were either: with it being dusk and the sun

going down, potentially a shark attack or probably one of us potentially drowning,” he said. Senior Constable Glen Young said it was lucky they found the men when they did.

MORE than 1,000 General Practices, including those across the Hunter Region will join the COVID-19 vaccination program from this week. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said services supporting the Phase 1B Vaccine Rollout would come online from 22 March. Phase 1B includes vulnerable groups, such as older people and people with certain underlying medical conditions. In Tea Gardens, the vaccine will be accessible at Ochre Health Medical Centre Tea Gardens. Across Port Stephens, the vaccine will be available at Raymond Terrace Respiratory Clinic, Stockton Surgery, Soldiers Point Medical Centre, Salamander Medical Centre, Tilligerry Medical Practice and Central Health Alliance in Williamtown. “We all know the invaluable work our local GP’s do for our community, now we will see them play a vital role in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout,” said Mr Gillespie. “Across the Hunter this includes general practices in Williamtown, Lorn, Thornton, Rutherford, Swansea, Charlestown, Abermain,

Salamander Bay and Cardiff to name a few,” Dr Gillespie said. “Phase 1B of the rollout will see 1,000 GP’s across Australia delivering COVID-19 vaccines for our elderly and immunocompromised, progressively increasing in number to more than 4,000 by the end of April,” Dr Gillespie said. “Australians eligible for Phase 1B will be able to find a vaccination provider through the new national vaccination information and location service, at the Department of Health website.” “This will enable people to locate their nearest general practice providing vaccinations and link through to their online booking system or phone number to make the appointment.” “Vaccines are the game changer in our fight against the COVID-19 virus and I urge everyone in Australia to come forward and get vaccinated when they are able to. “It will protect themselves, their family, and their community.” In making the announcement, Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt MP, said the rollout would continue to

grow in the coming weeks. “This staged scale up will align with the supply of the locally produced AstraZeneca

vaccine, and as more vaccine becomes available more services will come online,” Minister Hunt said.

THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club held a Members Car Show on Saturday March 13, the day previously reserved for their Annual Community Aid Motorfest. This popular event was unfortunately

cancelled due to uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Club members with their cars gathered at a magnificent Pindimar property to celebrate the ongoing success of the Motor Club and, along with enjoying lunch and the car display, discuss plans for future outings and Club

organised events. The date for the 2022 Motorfest has already been confirmed with MidCoast Council as Saturday March 12. The car display consisted of about 20 well prepared vehicles with models from MGB, Austin Healy, Ford, Holden, Mercedes, Citroen and VW. The Motor Club meets 7.00PM on the second Tuesday of the month at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

Dear Jasminda, I recently made a negative comment about someone jet skiing in the duck pond during the floods and now I'm apparently a whinger. I was concerned about the safety aspect and flood water whooshing into houses, but instead I am one of those people who can't have a bit of fun. Mrs Mary P.

TO ROOF OR NOT TO ROOF! I’ve discovered my roof is leaking. I am placing it on the market. What do I do? DURING this extremely wet weather event we are currently experiencing, it has brought to light the properties where the roof needs attention. I always advocate that when you are preparing to go to market you attend to all the little repairs and maintenance jobs that are outstanding. That way, when buyers walk through your home, they won’t be overwhelmed by things that need to be completed or repaired. Even if those items are only small insignificant jobs, they could be enough for an already nervous buyer to feel completely overwhelmed and walk out with no intention of buying. Now a new roof is a big ticket item. Like a kitchen or bathroom that needs replacing, a new roof can be a very costly affair. Sometimes though the roof doesn’t need replacing. Get a qualified tradie to inspect your roof if it is leaking. It may just be that some of the screws are loose, or that one sheet of iron needs replacing etc. Regardless, leaking roofs scare off buyers. If they still do want to purchase, after finding out that the roof leaks, then you may find that they want you to reduce the price of the property considerably. So if you have a roof that is leaking, have it inspected, then repaired or replaced. This will ultimately lead to a much faster sale, more thank likely a higher sales price achieved and a happy buyer. I hope this helps Denise

Celebration Of Words Lions Club Of Raymond Terrace Celebrate the Return Of Celebration Of Words in 2021

PORT Stephens is about to see the best of the best in our young speakers at the annual Celebration of Words – better known as the COWS event. Last year the Lions Club of Raymond Terrace who organise the annual Celebration Of Words event was disappointed not to proceed with the event due to COVID-19. However the Lions have worked hard to ensure that in 2021 the event will go ahead with students from four Port Stephens Schools competing for the prize. Lion Club of Raymond Terrace member

Ted Arneson told News Of The Area, “The COWs Event which is on the night of the 26 March at the Raymond Terrace Senior Citizen’s Hall with the doors open 6:00 pm. “There will be three students from year 10 at each school – Hunter River High, Irrawang High, Medowie Christian and St. Philips Christian College competing,” he said. Each student will speak for three minutes on one of three given subjects relative to youth in the area. In 2019 the speeches delivered by the competitors at the Celebration of Words contributed to the Port Stephens Council’s Youth Plan.

Dear Mary, There are some people who take on a natural disaster as a personal invitation to be a risk taker and others who do what the SES and emergency broadcasts tell them to. The fact you are the latter doesn't make you a whinger, but someone with a bit of common sense. There are clear directives for what to avoid during floods -- water over the road, nonessential travel and so on, and certain safety measures such as sandbagging or moving items to higher ground in the event of a flood. For others, though, a flood somehow beckons them to dust off their kayaks, windsurfers, surfboards and (god-help-us) jet skis and use them as mobility devices on flooded roads and retention pits for water runoff. There, floating along with sewerage from people's overflowing septics and dangerous tree limbs and mud, you will find Garry doing a bit of impromptu paddle boarding or Kim lolling around on a blow-up flamingo without a care in the world. Next to them voyeurs in cars ignore water across the road so they can create waves and make impromptu videos of people's homes going under. What fun. Then there's parents videoing their kids who are slowly sinking in what looks like quicksand in flooded beach car parks. Boys will be boys, they laugh. To have this desire for self-gratification over the health and safety of others, including rescue workers, is truly mind boggling. Not only does the Celebration of Words encourage the development of confident communication but given the subject matter it highlights what is important to our local youth in their own words. Discover and Dine Vouchers Available for Port Stephens By Victoria HENDERSON

ECONOMIC recovery will be one thing on everyone’s mind as the area moves on from the pandemic. The New South Wales government has introduced a new scheme to assist with that recovery. Under the ‘Discover and Dine’ scheme four $25 vouchers are provided to NSW residents. These vouchers are divided into two categories: - 2 x dining vouchers for use in restaurants, cafes, bars, wineries, pubs and clubs - 2 x entertainment/ recreation vouchers to be used at cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues. The Service NSW website

states that the purpose of the scheme is to, “Encourage the community to get out and about, supporting dining, arts and tourism businesses.”

To access the scheme residents and businesses need only register on the Service NSW website or app.

So far the scheme has been embraced by the Port Stephens area with several businesses already registered. Similarly, some residents have already been using their

This concern aside, business owners are optimistic about the scheme. One of the businesses registered is the Little Pantry Co coffee shop in Medowie. The owner, Zali Morcom, is optimistic about the impact it will have on her business and others. “We’ve already had a couple customers use the vouchers. “Hopefully, it will encourage people to come out and spend a bit more,” she said.

a change of committee and is welcoming new leadership. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “March is the time for Probus Clubs to ring the changes and elect a new president as well as confirming all those members who are happy to take on all organisation of the activities that fill the clubs with friendships, fun and – very often – enlightenment!” Fingal Bay Probus Club’s recent annual general meeting saw Jenny Wright retire after a two-year presidency. Jenny congratulated the members on keeping the club flourishing despite COVID regulations. She then handed the president’s position over to the popular and experienced Rex Sneyd, and other members confirmed their willingness to take on other

work. “From some of the suggestions made there are even more exciting times ahead!” she said. The Fingal Bay Probus Club meets at 9.30am on the second Monday of each month at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. New members and visitors are welcome to learn about the club and its activities that include wine and dine evenings, walking for pleasure, barbecues, coffee mornings, wine appreciation time and a variety of guest

speakers. If you would like to participate in a fun and lively social community group the members of Fingal Bay Probus Club would welcome you warmly. Port Stephens is home to several Probus Clubs which support positive social interaction for retirees. Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Damage By Marian SAMPSON

STORM damage from heavy rains have seen the region drenched resulting in flooded roads, landslides and a clean up bill that will challenge Council and residents alike. The SES has been busy responding to calls for help and Raymond Terrace SES and Corlette SES are offering sandbags to residents to assist with the protection of property. Businesses in Magnus Street in Nelson Bay were seeing water flow in their front doors as cars continued to drive through the flooded street on Thursday creating yet another interruption to trade in trying times. Nelson Bay Golf Club rose from the ashes of a fire only to suffer water damage this week, however the resilient team have ensured the club is open for its members. Teramby Road in Nelson Bay was subject to a landslide with closing the road access to the Fisherman’s Co-operative and the break wall.

Another land slip has occurred opposite Conroy Park at Corlette closing Sandy Point Road to traffic.

The Visitors Information Centre on Victoria Parade was also closed last week due to flooding. The list of street closures around the region included Dowling Street, and Lilly Hill Rd, in Nelson Bay, Foreshore Drive and Sandy Point Road, in Corlette, Horace Street, and Tomaree Headland in Shoal Bay, Kirrang Drive, in Medowie, and Wanda Avenue, in Salamander Bay, Marine Drive near Barry Park in Fingal Bay, Tomago Road at the Pacific Highway and Riverside Drive, in Karuah. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “Engineers have been inspecting the buildings above the landslip at Teramby Road and there appears to be no issues with the buildings above the

Rainfall Statistics

IT doesn’t take a meteorologist to realise the Myall Coast and Port Stephens regions saw a lot of rainfall in the past week or so, but how much did we actually get? Tea Gardens resident Geoff True’s rain gauge recorded 535 millimetres in 5 days, close to 40 percent of the mean annual rainfall for the area. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, from Thursday

18 March 2021, to the time of writing (Monday 22 March 2021 at 1pm), the weather station at Williamtown RAAF recorded 331 millimetres (mm) of rainfall. This included a peak of 96.4mm on Friday 19 March. Prior to this period of consistent rainfall, Williamtown had experienced 69mm of rainfall from March 1 to March 18. The mean (average)

rainfall for March at the Williamtown RAAF is 120mm. In Nelson Bay, 539.6mm of rain was recorded in the first 20 days of March, with 457.9mm recorded in just three days between 18-20 March. This included a peak of 202.5mm on Friday 19 March. At the Stroud Post Office, 233.4mm has been recorded for the month to date, including 106.8mm on Friday 19 March, The mean rainfall for Stroud in March is 145.6mm.

Fire & Rescue NSW told News Of The Area, “We encourage locals to be smart when near floodwaters. “Never drive through them, and definitely don’t walk in them. “Leave early if threatened by floodwaters. “Rain means slippery roads, so drive safely and don’t take unnecessary risks. “We don’t want to have to see you in bad circumstances,

so use common sense and contact emergency services if you’re not sure about something. “Listen to advice from the SES and other emergency services, and stay safe,” he said. As the rain continues to fall residents are waiting for forecast high winds as the weather event continues across the region.

Subsidised Flights

WHILE Newcastle Port Stephens airport is a safer model than some due to its partnership with the Australian Defence Force it is still facing financial challenges due to the pandemic. The Federal Government’s new tourism and aviation support package will do little to ease the crisis facing our local airport and nearly every other NSW regional airport. While acknowledging the $1.2 billion package will

help the struggling aviation and regional tourism sectors transition past the end of the JobKeeper program, ALGA said it offered nothing substantive to regional airports, many of which are struggling to survive. Since the onset of the pandemic, revenues at some local council-owned airports have collapsed by as much as 90 percent. Newcastle Port Stephens Airport was facing a 90% decline in revenue as reported in September 2020 due to the

pandemic. Moreover, despite sharply fewer regular airline flights, councils like Port Stephens and Newcastle Councils which jointly own the airport are still having to pay the full costs of compliance, safety, and maintenance for their airports. However the subsidy not being offered to our local airport means that our local residents are at a disadvantage. Some residents around Australia will have access to

ALGA President Cr Linda Scott said councils are grateful for ongoing federal and state government programs to support or enhance aviation safety and accessibility. “There are almost 4000 jobs generated by regional and remote airport precincts across the country and given the uncertainties about when the pandemic will be brought under control, federal and state governments need to reconsider their level of direct support for local government. “Local government has

been given little direct financial support during Covid-19, apart from subsidies to help meet the costs of governmentmandated security screening of passengers and freight,” Cr Scott said. Cr Scott added that because local governments were not eligible for JobKeeper payments, councils have struggled to hold on to airport staff. “There’s a real risk that without further direct support, these skilled people will leave their communities in search of work elsewhere – making a return to normal operations for regional

airports extremely difficult in the short term.” About 200 airports are owned by councils, and besides keeping local communities connected with large urban centres, these facilities are needed for medical services and disaster emergencies. The federal government’s recently announced discount airfares do little to assist those living in regional NSW wanting to take advantage of a discount flight. Newcastle Airport doesn’t have one scheduled discounted flight under the scheme at the time of writing.

Michael Fix and Mark Cryle join forces, creating a unique musical perspective on Australian history. People and events are brought to life in song; whether singing of the Aboriginal fast bowler Eddie Gilbert, or the doughty St Patrick Day's protesters confronting police batons in Brisbane in 1948, or Ronald Ryan, the last hanged man in Australia. When Mark sings about visiting Sideshow Alley at the Brisbane Ekka as a child and a Dad, every word rings true without any cloying sentimentality. Both Mark and Michael are multi-instrumentalists and seasoned performers, and both are passionate about keeping Australia’s chequered history alive - the good, the bad and the ugly - revealed through a catalogue of important original songs.

HEALTH and wellbeing have risen in our priorities particularly given the challenges of 2020 and COVID-19.
