DOZENS of Stockton residents were victims of vandalism and break-ins on the night of 20 February 2021. Residents are reporting smashed windows, mailboxes and car break ins in a number of Stockton locations including: Roxburgh street, Dunbar Street, Douglas Street, Monmouth Street and Clyde Street Damage was also reporting along Mitchell Street, with damage to pot plants, letter boxes and turning/ leaving water taps on. Residents are reporting that the crimes took place early on the morning of 21 February, reporting loud electronic music being played and noise around 2:30am. One resident reported that the alleged criminal was using a

baseball bat, and many reported larger 4WD vehicles circling the streets of Stockton in the early hours of the morning. Port Stephens-Hunter Police District Crime Manager Detective Inspector, Ranald Urquhart reminded residents of recommended safety procedures. “These crimes can often be prevented through simple crime prevention tips people can introduce in and around their homes, including security systems, sensor lighting, and keeping all valuables locked inside the home or shed at all times. “Make sure all doors and windows are locked before leaving your home or leaving your car. “We will continue to run operations throughout the district- those who choose to continue breaking the law, we will charge you and put you before the courts.”

Essential Pages Blocked By Tara CAMPBELL ON Thursday 18 February, Facebook banned Australians from sharing or viewing news content. Facebook made the decision to block news outlets and publications from its platform after the Australian Government made the decision to progress with

their Media Bargaining Code. The proposed Code states that Facebook and Google would be required to share revenue with Australian publishers for use of any news content or links to their sites. It also required Google and Facebook to provide notice for changes to any algorithms. Facebook explained repeatedly to the Australian Government that, “The Code would force Facebook to

pay news organisations for content that the publishers voluntarily place on our platforms and at a price that ignores the financial value we bring publishers,” arguing that the platform is Social Media first and foremost. Unfortunately, during the Facebook block many pages belonging to charities, small businesses, public services and governments were all removed too.

Directly related to the Port Stephens area, the ban included Save our Children Australia, The Bureau of Meteorology, Suicide Prevention Australia, 1800RESPECT (National sexual assault and domestic family service counselling service), The Women’s Rugby League, Fire and Rescue NSW and thousands of other essential services. This inaccuracy in removal of claimed ‘news’ sites was

met with anger and frustration of users both nationally and internationally, with fear that essential information could not be easily accessed. “This is a really hard thing to do. “We’ve never done it before. We are sorry for the mistakes we made in some of the implementation,” Simon Milner, Facebook VicePresident of Public Policy said. Since the apology, many pages have been restored, however many people are still concerned by this ban,

with other services still not restored. Facebook users are still grasping the new changes, and are anxious about what the upcoming weeks will look like due to this code. WITH the retail price of mud crabs hovering around $60/ kg they were a much sought after crustacean by both professional and recreational fisherfolk alike. They still are, although the price has crashed to around the $20 mark. This was the result of the collapse of the export market to China. It is believed that recreational fishers catch more mud crabs than the professionals and that is why researchers need our help. The mud crab's life cycle is fascinating with the females spawning at sea. Each carries some two million to five million eggs under the flap beneath their shell and the hatchlings drift into bays and inlets to complete their life cycles. They live for about four years and NSW is one state where you can keep female crabs as long as they are not carrying eggs. Females are easily identified as they have smaller nippers and a larger flap than the males. Mud crabs feed at night, spending their days in burrows around the foreshore and in the mangroves. Fisheries researchers want to know more and here is where you can help. If you catch any mud crabs, look for a 'T bar' tag

$5 million to fast-track the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan NELSON Bay is one step closer to more car parking and a revamped Stockton Street after Port Stephens Council last week voted to borrow $5 million to fast-track the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan thanks to revenue from the Smart Parking scheme. Mayor Ryan Palmer said locals are ready for action. “We’ve been working closely with residents and businesses over the recent weeks and they tell me they’re hungry to see the rubber hit the road. “Delivery of the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan was a key aim of our 2018 application for a Special Rate Variation — when this got knocked back, we had to investigate another way to fund the much needed work in the Bay,” he said. “More car parking, street

trees, pathways, lighting, more car parking, corridors that connect the CBD with the foreshore — this work is vital to ensuring a future for the Nelson Bay CBD, making it a place where people want to invest and spend time with family and friends.” At Tuesday 9 February’s ordinary meeting of Council, Councillors voted to borrow the $5 million over a maximum of 10 years to pull forward a plan of works, with repayments to the loan generated from the Nelson Bay Smart Parking revenue. Mayor Palmer said Council will be engaging with the community to determine their priorities. “We’ll continue to work together with businesses and residents as we map out a plan for how to spend this money.

They have organised the first ever Port Stephens Health & Wellbeing Expo which is to be held on March 28, at the Shoal Bay Convention Centre. VET Courses in 2022

HEALTH Administration, robotics and social media are just some of the 20 new online Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses to be made available to every Hunter government high school student in 2022. In addition to existing face-to-face VET, Year 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity to study online courses that will give them in-demand skills for the workplaces. These courses will form part of their HSC and contribute to their ATAR. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Taylor Martin said the new courses will allow students in the Hunter to receive world-class skills training. “These courses will help students build skills across emerging industries, including advanced manufacturing, technology and engineering,” Mr Martin said. “I am excited to see students in the Hunter get the opportunity to access these new courses as part of the NSW Government’s Curriculum Reform. “These new online courses are a win-win for students. Not only does it make them instantly employable, they also have the choice to pursue further education in fields with plenty of career opportunities. The new online courses, specifically designed for high school students, cover a range of future-focussed industry sectors including cyber security, data analytics, accounting, horticulture, gaming, community and

Raymond Terrace woman arrested after alleged home invasion

A 27-year-old Raymond Terrace woman was arrested in relation to a home invasion at Raymond

Terrace. It is alleged that on Thursday 11/02/21 the female attended an address in

To set the scene for our tale we have to backtrack to 1962. These times were very different to the open and permissive social ones of today. Children were raised in a strict way where obedience was the iron rule and the word of adults was law. It was in such an environment that a then 16 year old girl, now Judy Camm, found herself in a Catholic home for unmarried mothers with her infant daughter being taken from her arms. Nothing more was said about the matter and she was sent home to get on with her life. Fast forward some 25 years and a certain Louise Wilkins heard family rumours which suggested she was an adopted child.

When questioned, her adoptive parents told her the truth and Louise was given the documentation. Then began her tentative correspondence with her birth mother Judy, which led to an emotional reunion. There were a lot of tears as the pain of the past melted

What is the go with people not allowing others to merge when driving? Some silly git almost ran me off the road yesterday.

“Should I proceed with the purchase of a house if termites have been detected?” KNOWLEDGE is power, so your question highlights the importance of getting pest/building inspections. The CSIRO estimates that 1 in 5 Australian homes will be visited by termites, which should, in some small way ease your fears because, very clearly, you are not alone! Once you have the inspection report you can make an informed decision based on the status of the infestation – is it historic or current? If historic, is the treatment under guarantee and is that transferable to you? Or you may be satisfied that the issue has been dealt with accordingly. If current, how extensive and what level of treatment is required to prevent future attacks? And at what cost, both of treatment and any repairs? Given the prevalence of termites in Australia, swiftly rejecting a property where termites might be active, may mean missing out on a brilliant opportunity. Vendors will accept there’s a problem and clauses can be included in the contract to ensure all necessary actions are taken, possibly at the vendor’s cost or this cost may be able to be negotiated from the agreed price. Or you may just wish to move forward regardless and have the damage and little critters dealt with yourself. Termites can be treated and eradicated, so don’t panic. Think calmly, clearly and logically, basing your decision on the facts and you’ll make the correct decision. In life you will come across people who respect others, and those who think they are somehow more important than their peers. The merging rule is the etiquette equivalent of holding open a door so the person behind you doesn’t get a fly screen slammed in their face. It’s socially on par with adhering to the 12 items limit at the express queue instead of loading up the week’s groceries. And it’s having the same level of decency as those who give up their seat for an elderly person with a dodgy leg. Some of us have been brought up properly, and others are angry, selfentitled numb skulls destined to go through life ignorant and sad. A blight on humanity. There’s no point wasting energy feeling hostile against people who are lacking the basics. If letting them push in front prevents an accident, then try to stave off your anger and put more energy into people who deserve it. A chat with Mayor Ryan Palmer PORT Stephens is known for its incredible natural beauty and we all want to keep it that way! That’s why we’re taking part in the statewide Don’t be a Tosser! campaign encouraging residents and visitors to take responsibility for their rubbish by putting it in the bin or taking it with them. We’re rolling out the campaign on radio, online and in newspapers across our region to remind everyone that throwing your rubbish anywhere other than a bin is unacceptable. We are all proud to call Port Stephens home and have a duty to protect our natural landscape — by raising awareness of littering and the serious impacts it causes we’re hoping to drive changes in behaviour. Litter doesn’t just look bad — it’s also very costly. More than $180 million a year is spent managing litter in NSW. That money could be much better spent on services or projects for communities like ours. During a recent local litter check in Nelson Bay, Port Stephens Council found over 480 cigarette butts in a 12 metre survey area alone — while at 20 sites across Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay a further 1449 cigarette butts were found. These cigarette butts ultimately end up in our waterways polluting our beautiful beaches and coastline. That’s why it’s so important they go in the bin. Medowie Futsal Club crown Grand Final winners

MEDOWIE Futsal Club have crowned their champions after Grand Finals were played across junior and senior divisions last week. In the Senior competition Grand Final, Numberwang defeated Misfits 8-1 to cap off a dominant season in which they won 12 games from 12, with a final goal difference of +68. In the U6/7s Grand Final, the Little Rascals dispatched of the Medowie Minions 4-0 to take the crown. In the Under 8/9 competition, the Lightning Strikers earnt a tight victory over the Green Machines 2-1. The All Stars claimed glory in the U/10 competition, with a 2-1 win over Nelson Bay United. The Under 12 crown went to the Ninjas, who came out on top after a 4-3 victory over Beetlejuice. The Hooligans proved too strong for the River Rats in the Under 14s, while Green Team edged the Losers 4-2 in the Under 16’s.

Killorn found a handful of playful and punchy lefthanders in the heat to post a respectable 10.45 two-wave heat total to cement his spot into the round of 64. “The conditions were definitely tricky,” said Killorn.

“There were some scorable waves but it was really hard to find them. “I was a little worried coming into this heat against Mike. “He knows a lot more about this beach than I do, so to get the win over him feels pretty good. “My whole tactic was to sit on my own and stay away from all the other competitors.” The four-event series will see three QS1000 rated events (Maroubra, Great Lakes and Port Stephens) and one men’s and women’s QS3000 (Central Coast). Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW was enthusiastic about the surfing, he told News Of The Area, “Of the locals Mike Clayton-Brown has shown some good local “nous” surfing these waves using his knowledge of the surf.” Josh Stretton got through the first heat and was knocked out coming fourth in his second, but it doesn’t end there as Josh and other Port Stephens locals are heading off to surf Maroubra in another competition over the weekend. Local wildcard Jasmine Sampson was also knocked out on day one of the competition. Information and results correct at time of publication.
