AUSSIE Helpers is calling on everyday Australians to help make Christmas feasible for hundreds of farming families around Australia by purchasing hampers of essential goods. The economic burden of years of drought coupled with a crippling pandemic means many farming families are facing the very real prospect of skipping Christmas due to financial stress. Aussie Helpers CEO Tash Kocks said that this year had proven to be one of the most gruelling for farmers already struggling to make ends meet. “Aussie farmers have battled seasonal labour shortages, volatile commodity prices, international trade tensions and recession all the while recovering from devastating bushfires and one of the longest droughts in living memory,” Ms Kocks said. “Farmers keep our fridges and pantries full but sometimes struggle to feed themselves. “It’s heartbreaking the dire reality of their situations.” With support from Woolworths and Real Pet Food, Aussie Helpers’ Christmas hampers

DETECTIVES are appealing for information as part of an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a young girl at Port Stephens almost two years ago. Earlier this month, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a young girl had been sexually assaulted by an unknown man at Nelson Bay last year. Investigators have been told the girl – then aged 11 – was at Dutchmans Beach Reserve when she was approached by an unknown man, before being taken to nearby bushes and sexually assaulted.

The incident is believed to have occurred between 11am to late afternoon on Sunday 27 January 2019.

The man has been described as being aged in his 60s or 70s, with an olive complexion, grey hair below his ears and a moustache. He is believed to have been wearing a black t-shirt. As investigations continue, detectives are appealing for public information – including any photographs, video recordings or dashcam footage – from Dutchmans Beach Reserve on Sunday 27 January 2019. Anyone who has information about the incident is urged to come forward immediately. The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and serious cases of neglect. TWO builders with a dream to renovate a derelict hall in Tanilba Bay have seen their vision realised after only eight weeks, thanks to the generosity of local residents and tradespeople within the Hunter. The derelict hall had been the main operating space for Centre for Hope for the last two years but when COVID-19 set in, normal means of community support ceased. Todd Hutton and Scott Curtis pitched an idea to renovate the hall to their employer Komatsu, as part of the Live Your Dream program, granting $10,000 to reinvigorate the space. Last Thursday the volunteers who had worked on the hall, which is known as ‘The Drop’, came together to celebrate the final product. The former girl guides hall is now a usable space for younger children and their parents thanks to the efforts of the wider community. Natasha Reece, Project Manager for The Smith Family’s Communities for Children initiative, coordinated the various arms which made the endeavour possible and said, “I’ve never seen as much support from the business sector as this.” She said not only was it a great collaboration but the renovation provided “a space which answers the calls of the community.” “This project allowed a range of services to connect back in with the community including

Safer Children who’ve been using this space,” she said. “It allowed them to reconnect with the children who generally weren’t receptive to the tele-practice which took the place of face-to-face work during COVID-19.” Centre for Hope CEO Geraldine Moran said to Todd and Scott they don’t yet know the significant impact their donation and time will have upon the community.

She said, “What Scott and Todd dreamt as part of their Komatsu employment but then what they initiated and what they created is something even greater than what they expected.” “The bricks and the mortar are beautiful and provide the space, but the heart that [they] put into this provides something for young people that you won’t expect,” she said. Scott acknowledged the great

community support but said, “It wasn’t just Todd and I, it was a massive effort.” “If it was just the $10,000 [from komatsu], Todd and I would’ve been done in a couple of days, the money would’ve been spent,” he said. With the renovations completed, ‘The Drop’ will now provide a space for professionals and community workers to connect with children and youth in the area.

Man arrested following investigation into corrupt betting on international table tennis tournaments ORGANISED Crime Squad detectives have arrested a man following an investigation into an alleged gambling syndicate placing corrupt bets on international table tennis tournaments. In June this year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, with assistance from Sport Integrity Australia, established Strike Force Brombal to investigate a transnational gambling syndicate allegedly placing corrupt bets on international table tennis tournaments. Inquiries revealed a 40-year-old Broadmeadow man received information relating to fixed table tennis matches in Europe. Corrupt bets were subsequently placed on the matches, resulting in winnings valued at $500,000. Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives executed nine search warrants at homes at Broadmeadow, Wickham,

Bushfires and floods have ravaged the countryside across the nation and COVID-19 has impacted the world on a scale that has taken so many lives. Here we have been relatively safe however the economic toll and the toll on the mental health of the community cannot be underestimated. This year more than ever we need to have hope, and we do. Hope coming from those who lead us, hope coming from those who support us. Concerns after privacy breach By Miles PROUST

MISSION Australia has accidentally leaked the personal details of more than 1400 housing tenants from the Mid North Coast in what is being called a massive privacy breach. In an email viewed by News Of The Area, Mission Australia attached a document containing the names, addresses, emails and phone numbers of tenants to an email addressed to residents warning of upcoming severe

weather. One tenant who asked to remain anonymous said the privacy breach could have severe implications for residents who have escaped domestic violence or child abuse if the personal information was to be accessed by perpetrators. News Of The Area spoke to two tenants about the privacy leak, both of whom were upset about the breach. “I don’t have any issues with hiding from people, but there’s going to be a lot who

do,” said one tenant. “If it leaks out, it’s going to be really really bad, there could be perpetrators who are out there that have not been jailed and are in the housing system somewhere and might be able to find people through this.” In a followup email, Mission Australia asked recipients to delete the leaked information and to confirm when they had done so. “I think it’s disgusting to be honest,” said another tenant. “Myself and a few other people I know on the list have

ART takes on many forms and the artwork Flotsam and Jetsam shows how collaboration in art can create something very special. In 2020, for many members of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre considered vulnerable to COVID-19, art became a way to focus on something positive. During the COVID-19 lockdown from March to July this year the Fusion Group took up a challenge to create ‘inchies’ using a fabric embellishment Texture Challenge. Their brief was to take a five-centimetre piece of fabric and to use varied hand sewing techniques to transform it into something unique, the work is titled Flotsam and Jetsam. It’s been a long year, but the <i>Gardening Australia</ i> team is looking on the bright side – more people are gardening than ever before. For the last show of 2020, they’re celebrating with a look at what has changed this year. Josh Byrne ﬁnds out how the nursery industry kept up with unprecedented demand for vegetable seedlings during lockdown. Looking to the Christmas table, Jane Edmanson discovers what it takes to produce the tonnes of delicious cherries Australia eats every summer, while Sophie Thomson whips up some tasteful decorations.

One of the best things to come out of 2020 for music fans has been getting the band back together for the <i>Spicks and Specks</i> specials. In this third and ﬁnal instalment of their decade-themed episodes, Adam Hills, Myf Warhurst (pictured) and Alan Brough relive the music of the 2010s – the decade that brought us ﬂossing, the Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style – with musicians Kate Miller-Heidke and Vance Joy alongside comedians Claire Hooper and Luke McGregor. Joy demonstrates a knowledge of Taylor Swift in “Know Your Product”, while Miller-Heidke takes the mic for everyone’s favourite game Substitute.

Port Stephens students can now apply for $2000 to help with studies in 2021 A TOTAL of $34,000 is now available to help Port Stephens students starting TAFE or university in 2021 as part of the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships. Now in its twelfth year, local students can apply for a $2000 scholarship to help cover the cost of their studies thanks to the joint initiative by Port Stephens Council and local businesses. This year, 14 local

businesses have collectively contributed $34,000 to the scholarship pool creating 17 scholarships. This year’s generous sponsors include Ampcontrol, Destination Port Stephens, Hunter Land, Hunter Readymixed Concrete, McDonald Jones Homes, MOJO Homes, Newcastle Airport, Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Salamander Bay Recycling (2), Soldiers Point

Bowling Club, SUEZ Resource Recovery Centre, The Wests Group (2), Tomago Aluminium and Weathertex (2). Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the program helps local students on their way to further education. “For over a decade, Port Stephens Council has been working with local businesses to help local students who are just starting out on their academic journey. “Whether it’s paying for textbooks, buying a laptop or helping with living costs — we

know these scholarships go a long way to helping students pursue their passions and achieve their goals through further education. “If you’re a resident of Port Stephens and you’re thinking of starting university or TAFE next year, I’d encourage you to apply for a scholarship and give yourself a head start in your academic career,” he said. Mayor Palmer recognised the generosity of local businesses in supporting this important initiative. “In the past 11 years, we’ve

THIS Christmas Eve, Thursday afternoon 24 December, Santa has engaged the services of the Pindimar - Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade to do a last-minute visit before the big day. The schedule is: • 2.00pm: Depart Tea Gardens shed, Captains Cove (off Leeward Circuit), Cnr Budgeree St & Nautilus Close, Cnr Coupland and Sidney Street • 2.30pm: Dunshea Park, Tea Gardens Soccer Field, • 3.00pm: Swan Bay foreshore (near Munleena Ave); cnr Dolphin Ave and Mermaid Ave, Hawks Nest Beach Caravan Park • 3.30pm: Surf Life Club carpark, Jimmys Beach Caravan Park • 4.00pm: Winda Woppa Boat Ramp, Moira Parade Boat Ramp, ANZAC Park Marine Drive, Back to shed.. THE 2021 PROPERTY MARKET LANDSCAPE “It’s been such a crazy year. How do you see real estate heading in 2021?” HASN’T it just! So much has happened, with so much written – by myself included – about the market. It’s fair to assume the bushfires, then Covid-19 should have sent the market plummeting, but it didn’t. Real estate in our region has enjoyed a stellar year with vendors selling quickly and strongly and buyers making their lifestyle dreams come true. Certainly, there was a frenzy where urbanites seeking a regional (better!) lifestyle rushed to purchase, sending prices sky high as they picked up properties on or before listing day. This has now tempered, but the selling prices remain strong as buyers understand they are securing quality properties that align with their changing needs. And make no mistake, Covid-19 has seen a very real realignment of lifestyle choices. Consequently,demand continues to outstrip supply. Because of this, I predict the market will remain buoyant well into 2021. Each of R&R’s five offices – Stroud, Gloucester, Forster, Bulahdelah and Raymond Terrace are enjoying impressive sales across residential, rural lifestyle and housing block sectors. The Spider’s Gift A Christmas Poem

THE donkey stopped by the stable door, the star beamed bright above, the gentle maid sank on fresh, sweet sweet straw and gave birth to her own, dear love. Then she wrapped Him tight in swaddling cloths and places Him where cattle fed; for the town had no room for her infant son, so a manger served as His bed. The spider scurried across the floor, and picked its way up the wall, and settled itself in a comfy niche right over the cattle stall. It gazed in awe as three great men - rich eastern clothes, they wore came in, and worshipped the tiny babe and offered the presents they bore. The Child-King slept, the young mother too, the father watched over the pair; the spider visualised it could give, then worked on its present, rare.

It was a wondrous, intricate, delicate thing made of finest, silken strands; - a pattern the world had ne'er seen before designed by immortal hands. The baby woke to a golden dawn though never uttered a cry, but focused His eyes on the sun-kissed web stretched out across beams, up high. You see It isn't the really expensive gifts of the gold and silver kind, nor the jewels from Earth's Treasure Chest that The Father has in mind: but rather, the simple joys of of life taken from Creation's Store that please the eye, and warm the heart, and bring Gods peace, for evermore. So the next time you find a wild creature's home don't sweep it away with a broom; it's likely the Christ-Child's first delight was work from a spider's loom....

We are the parents of teenage children which, as you know, means they want very little to do with us. That's not the problem. The problem is we have friends with four young children who also happen to be feral. They come over and terrorise our pets (and us). The parents seem oblivious. How do we deal with this? Henry and June W.

When you say they are feral, do you mean they are a bit loud and boisterous, or do you mean they are the type of kids who are liable to set your cat on fire if you turn away for a few moments. Regardless, I can hear them now, racing around your precariously arranged garden ornaments, squealing like stuck pigs, using your rake, gardening shears and garden hose to truss each other up and inflict corporal punishment because their parents let them watch Vikings instead of Play School and so on. What tends to happen in these situations is the menfolk retreat to the shed to have a much-needed beer, and you get stuck with the little treasures, dividing your time between averting medical emergencies and hiding in the bathroom to pop a sedative or two. Look, you have paid your penance for procreating, and now it's time to revel in the fact that your kids wake up after you and then slink off, grunting occasionally and chiming in when they smell dinner. Life is calm, and you don't need to have it disrupted by these wild juvenile miscreants. May I suggest a lock on your gate, or perhaps one of those special monitors that requires a password for entry. Alternatively, always arrange to meet at their house. That way you can determine when you've had enough and leave. It's not up to you to have to discipline someone else's offspring. If the parents can't do it, maybe you need to set them free along with the free spirits they've brought into the world. Find some new friends with children of a similar age to yours. Skateboarding from Melbourne to Cairns all for a good cause By Miles PROUST

IT’S a journey unlike any other - Melbourne to Cairns on a skateboard - and a mission Tom Drury, aka Gordy Fruito wants to be the first to complete. The mammoth 3600 km ride is for a good cause, with Mr Fruito raising money to build a skatepark in Laos - the only country in South East Asia without one. The 28-year-old from Broken Hill was inspired to make the trip after living in Laos where he worked as tour guide and English teacher. “I was there for three or four years and when I first went there ten years ago skateboarding was just being introduced and over time and since I’ve been back it's just getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “There’s a really big culture but nowhere for them to skate, they just skate on the street, temples and in car parks.” Mr Fruito has already completed the first leg of the journey, from Melbourne to Sydney, in less than a month and he hopes to arrive in Cairns by mid-March or early April.

Taking the coastal route via the Princes Highway, Mr Fruito averaged 60 to 70 km a day, skating from 7am to 5pm

PORT Stephens has been selected as the venue for the Women’s qualifying series of the World Surfing League. The event will be held at Birubi Beach over three days at the end of February 2021. The Port Stephens event is one of four: World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) events that will form the brand new Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series in the early stages of 2021. Ethan Smith Of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Surfing NSW has joined forces with the NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, Vissla and World Surf League to bring four QS events back to Boomerang Beach, Port Stephens, Maroubra and Avoca.” The four-event series will see two QS1000 rated events

(Maroubra and Great Lakes), one men’s and women’s QS3000 (Central Coast) and one women’s QS3000 (Port Stephens). “We are likely to see domestic competitors but it will be the cream of the crop of Australian Qualifying surfing that we will see at Birubi Beach.” The event at Birubi Beach is being supported by Port Stephens Council and Middle Rock Caravan Park. The new tour structure will provide a more streamlined and affordable career pathway for WSL athletes by allowing up-and-coming surfers to develop closer to home without financially overleveraging themselves. Athletes will compete on their regional QS tour in hopes of qualifying for the Challenger Series (CS), and ultimately the Championship Tour, which will reduce the economic pressure on surfers and their sponsors, as well as provide increased opportunities to celebrate local stars.
