PORT Stephens Council has joined Port Stephens Hunter Police in distributing COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) to community groups and organisations across Port Stephens. Deputy Mayor Paul Le Mottee joined NSW Police Inspectors Chad Giles and Rob Post at Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) late last week to deliver 6000 face masks, 48 bottles of sanitiser and 200 packets of cleaning wipes. Council has also provided face mask recycling bins. Deputy Mayor Le Mottee said the initiative supports the Local Emergency Management Committee’s (LEMC) response to the pandemic. “These organisations are on the frontline and

THE Medowie community is a step closer to gaining its first ambulance station, with the

preferred location announced. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the new purpose-

built ambulance station will be at 30 Ferodale Road, providing the optimal location

to service the community, with construction due for completion in 2022.

IT is with great sadness that the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group Inc. has to announce that their beautiful Patron Nola Lawler, sadly passed away in John Hunter Private Hospital on Tuesday night. Nola was an amazing woman, starting the Support Group 20 years ago to help a friend who was suffering Breast Cancer. With a small circle of her friends and a $100 donation she was off and running, helping hundreds of women and men over the years. Christine Walton, Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, told News Of The Area, “We

work together with Port Stephens Council and the entire LEMC to protect these organisations,” Inspector Skelly said. Bulk PPE is being made available thanks to Resilience NSW and Healthshare, who provide the items to NSW Councils to equip community organisations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Karuah LALC Chief Executive Officer Dave Kernick said access to PPE was critical to minimising the spread of COVID-19 in the Karuah

$1.1m win for Port’s sports complexes KING Park and Tomaree Sports Complex are the lucky recipients of the NSW Government’s Regional Sport Facility Fund to keep communities healthy, active and connected. Mayor Ryan Palmer says the grants will improve the quality of sport infrastructure across Port Stephens. “Investing in sporting infrastructure is an investment in the health of our community, now and into the future. “It’s also an investment in keeping our community connected and creates economic opportunities through hosting events. “Thanks to this grant, more than $840,000 will go to King Park Regional Sport Complex to help us continue to deliver the King Park masterplan. “We’ll upgrade the existing amenities building to provide unisex change rooms, revamp the meeting and function area, create new pathways to

THE High Court of Australia has ruled that media outlets which run Facebook pages can be held responsible for all defamatory comments published. This new ruling means that anyone who runs a public social media page can be theoretically sued over defamatory comments by users or group members, even if the owner of the page isn’t aware of the comment. This decision comes after a two-year-long case involving former Don Dale Youth Detention Centre inmate Dylan Voller and three media companies who published stories about Dylan following a Four Corners report. Although the stories from

these media companies were not defamatory themselves, Facebook users took to the comments on the pages of these outlets with highly defamatory remarks. Dylan then attempted to sue the owners of the Facebook pages, rather than the commenters, centring the case around the idea the media companies could be defined as the ‘publishers’ of this content. The High Court concluded, “The Court of Appeal was correct to hold that the acts of the appellants in facilitating, encouraging and thereby assisting the posting of the comments by the third-party Facebook users rendered them publishers of those comments. “The appeals should be dismissed with costs.” Although the case was

centred around Facebook, the High Court’s ruling affects all social media platforms such as Twitter or Instagram, other social media and websites that have a comments section. In other words, anyone who is responsible for managing and running a social media platform or website that invites readers, members of the public or group members to share comments will now have to actively monitor and moderate comments published across all platforms. Measures that can be put into place to ensure that no defamatory comments are published include: disabling comments if moderation is not possible, using tools including keyword and profanity blockers or offensive comment blockers, restricting who can respond to posts.

Tomaree Sports Complex will also receive grant funds for upgrades. “At Tomaree Sports Complex, we’ve received $260,000 to revitalise the Elizabeth Waring building into a high-quality sporting

and community space. It will also fund new pathways, seating and signage. “We want to encourage community events, meetings and training programs to be delivered from this modern function area that overlooks the John Nell Match Field. “This will complement works already underway at Tomaree Sports Complex to construct a new multipurpose amenities building, which is scheduled to be complete in early 2022. “These new facilities are going to be a game-changer for our local community as we continue to deliver on the vision of the Tomaree Sports Complex masterplan,” he said. The projects will be delivered under the 2020/21 Regional Facility Fund. Minister for Sport Natalie Ward said the projects will provide a welcome lift to sporting infrastructure across Port Stephens.

“This investment will help improve sporting facilities across Port Stephens, meaning more locals will have the opportunity to enjoy and take part in sport,” Mrs Ward said. “The NSW Government is committed to creating spaces and facilities that will meet the current and future needs of communities and support participation at all levels.” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the funding will improve sport infrastructure in Port Stephens. “The upgrades to Kings Parks and Tomaree Sports Complexes will provide Port Stephens locals with modern facilities for grassroots sport,” Mr Martin said. Council will continue to work with sporting clubs and community groups on the scope of the projects. Works are expected to be delivered in 2022. Cr Arnott was asked to no

longer voice his thoughts on the issue. Throughout the meeting, there was a clear tension amongst Councillors, with Cr Arnott at one point “invited to spend a little time in the Council,” by Mayor Palmer, despite his four-year stint as West-Ward Councillor. This is not the first time that drama has entailed between Cr Arnott and Mayor Palmer, with an illegal expulsion in a Council meeting in late December 2019.

A MAN has died following a single vehicle motorbike crash in the Hunter Region on Saturday afternoon. About 2.45pm on Saturday 18 September 2021, emergency services attended the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Sailors Way, Raymond Terrace regarding a crash involving

an unregistered motorbike. Police have been informed that the motorcycle collided with the curb where the 36-year-old male rider and a 6-year-old female passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. The male died at the scene and the girl was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics

for minor injuries. The man was not wearing a helmet. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation. A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

CHANGES to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) will see the Hunter region join a list of 16 local government areas where gas exploration and production is prohibited. The NSW Government has given effect to its Future of Gas Statement, with historic amendments to the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP), helping deliver a 77 per cent reduction of areas available for gas exploration in NSW. DEMENTIA Action Week 2021 runs from 20-26 September. Tuesday 21 September is World Alzheimer’s Day. Recent research conducted by Dementia Australia has identified that discrimination against people living with dementia is real and so entrenched that even those at risk expect to experience some form of discrimination. The Dementia Action Week Report ‘Discrimination and dementia - enough is enough’, has found more than two-thirds of people living with dementia anticipated they might experience discrimination. Maree McCabe AM, CEO Dementia Australia, said the research shows that people living with dementia and carers experience discrimination that can lead to social isolation, loneliness and poor mental health. ACON has received a share of the NSW Government’s $8 million Suicide Prevention Fund. The LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual) community is one of the most at-risk communities in terms of suicide attempts, with LGBTQIA+ youth from 16 to 27 five times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. Due to stigma, past trauma and social isolation, many members of this community struggle with mental health. ACON is NSW’s largest LGBTI+ health organisation and has spent over 35 years working to create opportunities for people in their community to live their healthiest lives, striving to be a global leader in community health, inclusion and

HIV responses for people of diverse sexualities and genders. ACON’s Acting Director of Community Health, Teddy Cook spoke to News Of The Area about this funding and how ACON is working to help regional and isolated members of the LGBTI+ community. “Part of this funding is to help us increase the level of our services for people who are in crisis and people who have recently made an attempt. “We will be providing ‘aftercare’ support which helps support counselling, care coordination and peer support, which we are very excited about. “We know that when people are linked into inclusive and affirming mental health support, they are considerably less likely to experience suicidality,” Teddy said This part of ACON’s service will also include a care coordinator

The impact of COVID has been great on those with dementia with 34% of family carers and 30% of people living with dementia indicated their physical wellbeing had declined due to COVID-19 restrictions. “Research demonstrates that this discriminatory behaviour impacts all aspects of a person’s life; from the way they engage socially to the types of services they access and receive and the way their human rights are interpreted,” Ms McCabe said. As part of Dementia Action Week, Dementia Australia is sharing simple and practical tips to give a little support to a person living with dementia; give a little support to a carer, friend or family member of a person living with dementia and support health care professionals to make their practice more dementiafriendly. Medowie parents receive notice of change to school zone redistribution By Victoria HENDERSON LAST week Medowie parents received a letter regarding the redistribution of public primary school zones in the suburb. The letter was shared on social media as many parents

expressed their surprise but clear understanding why the change was being implemented. There are currently two government primary schools in the suburb. Wirreanda Public is reported to have over 600 students, with Medowie Public reported at over 350. Both schools have seen an increase in student numbers in the

past few years as new estates are established in the suburb. These increases are set to continue as the estates mature and expand. The changes detailed in the letter and supported by the NSW Department of Education ‘School Finder’ website suggest that these new estates would now be zoned for Medowie Public. This would potentially ease the burden on Wirreanda Public but also place pressure on the smaller school. Parents enrolling their

kindergarten children for the 2022 school year are also now feeling the pressure. “My biggest concern is that the younger siblings of the Wirreanda Kindergarten class aren’t guaranteed a position at the school,” Vanessa Black, a parent from the Bower Estate said. “The transition process for our eldest started months ago with discussions about his ‘big school’ and the friends he will be going with. “Now we need to decide between potentially sending our children to

two different schools or undoing all of our eldest’s transition progress. “Had we been notified at the beginning of the year then the decision would have been so much easier.” The changes to the primary school zones could also be a sign of more significant changes to come. Many Medowie families would be glad for news of progress regarding the long anticipated government high school. The Department has been contacted for comment.

Spoonville Revitalises Community Spirit By Marian SAMPSON

THE community of Anna Bay is embracing a new trend designed to make life more fun for kids enduring the long lockdown. During the 2020 lockdown, it was teddy bears hiding in windows all designed to spark some joy for passers by. 2021 has seen community spirits revived across the country as Spoonville becomes the latest craze. The idea of ‘Spoonville’ originated in England, and was brought to Australia by Melbourne woman June Wilson during Covid to give children an indoor activity and to revive community spirit. A ‘Spoonville’ community starts by making characters from wooden spoons and placing them in a shared space. Members of the public can then

add their own spoons to the ‘Spoonville’ community. Though a seemingly simple child’s art project, small villages of decorated spoons have been sprouting up all over Australia on nature strips and in parks. There are now 182 registered Spoonvilles world wide. Spoonville has since popped up in Port Stephens and there are several satellite villages where spoons are now adorning gardens and creating a crafty activity for kids to get stuck into. The Spoonville community started at Anna Bay Public School, however you can spot Spoonvilles in other places, including one that has arrived at the end of Scott St, Anna Bay which members of the community are welcome to add to. To get into making a Spoonville contribution, simply

For the team seeing a turtle swim free after months of care is a truly momentous and joyful occasion. On 8 June, 2021 World Oceans Day, Sea Shelter held a competition. The winner would be whoever collected the most rubbish and the prize was to be a part of releasing Krill back into the Bay. “John and Mandy Dedman of Nelson Bay did an amazing job, collecting 805 pieces of rubbish from Main Beach and Little Beach.”

Due to lockdown restrictions, Seashelter was unable to make Krill’s release a public event, with all the volunteers attending.

Visitors to Spoonville are also asked to please keep their dogs under control as the Spoonville Community is not overly robust. Local mum Chontelle Grecian told News Of The Area, “Lilly loves that her friends have spoons there and they can be together even if they can’t see each other. “Lilly’s little brother Ben, he just loved turning his spoon into a monster,” she said.

Green Sea Turtle Released In Bay By Marian SAMPSON

IT’s no secret that our marine life is under pressure. Pollution and the effects of lights impact on our turtles. Krill is a juvenile green sea turtle with a carapace measuring 50cm. She came into the care of Sea Shelter and the team at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters at Anna bay in early March 2021. Corlette local John was in the water enjoying his daily swim when something bumped into the back of him, it was Krill. The female Green Sea Turtle had a heavy starboard list (leaning to the right) and was struggling to swim. John gave Sea Shelter a call and Marine Biologist Ryan Pereira, owner of Irukandji, drove down to rescue Krill. When Krill came into care faecal samples were taken and tested. These revealed that Krill had an infestation of Coccidiosis, a type of protozoa;

$665,000 to fix local roads in Port Stephens TWO Port Stephens roads will receive much-needed improvements to the tune of $665,000 thanks to a successful grant application by Port Stephens Council. A section of James Road at Medowie will be rehabilitated while Hannah Parade at One Mile will be resealed and the car park will be upgraded with funding from the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads initiative. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin congratulated Port Stephens Council on the funding, which is part of a $382 million program. “Fixing Local Roads is all about helping regional and rural councils carry out

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the funding will allow Council to start work on these much-needed projects sooner than anticipated. “We know the community of Medowie has been calling for a fix for James Road for some time, so it’s fantastic that we’re now able to get to work on rehabilitating this section of road. “The funding will also allow us to reseal Hannah Parade at One Mile including the car park. “Anyone who loves One Mile beach will know how popular this short stretch of road is and how much of a difference this will make to users. “We’re also focused on the adjacent Gan Gan Road over the

Fans were anxious if the ’80s-set dramedy from Aussie-born, London-living stand-up comedian Sarah Kendall (pictured) would ever return: viewers were left hanging by a thread in the season ﬁnale when Sammy Cooper (Kendall) discovered she had been misled out of her dead, cheating husband’s fortune by his smooth-talking lawyer Rufus (Robert Webb). In tonight’s return, Sammy is back in London on mission, but money is still scarce. Back in Australia, the police are watching the Cooper family over the missing person case. It’s a quirky, comical treat.

Port Stephens' Waterway Strategy in motion By Tara CAMPBELL

PORT Stephens Council met on 14 September 2021, discussing the development of a waterway strategy for the region. A motion put forward by Mayor Ryan Palmer, for Council to develop a waterway strategy that “sets out a

sustainable approach to managing our iconic waterways” was carried. Port Stephens Strategy and Environment Section Manager, Janelle Gardner reported that Port Stephens’ waterways are what make the area unique and thus, should be managed accordingly. “Our Port and tributaries, our

beaches, the drinking water catchment of Grahamstown, and the rivers in the west, shape the landscape and sustain vibrant communities. “The waterways support diverse habitats and important biodiversity as well as contributing to the local and regional economies, including aquaculture and international tourism.

“Planning for our waterways will ensure we balance the protection of our natural assets with strategies to promote community access, sustainable activities and recreation and economic opportunities,” Ms Gardner wrote. The Waterway Strategy will be a long-term plan and strategy to ensure

the greatest recreational use and preservation of the waterways, whilst developing a Coastal Management program to mitigate hazards and promote ecologically sustainable development in coastal areas. This motion was unanimously carried.

“Are buyers really purchasing properties sight unseen??” OH YES! Sight-unseen purchases aren’t uncommon as overseas buyers will often purchase on the strength of a video inspection. But for on-shore buyers denied access by state border restrictions, or a total lockdown as we’ve just experienced, combined with a shortage of properties, where there’s a will, there’s a way and sight unseen purchases have sky-rocketed. There is however, more than sufficient information for buyers to make informed decisions before purchasing what is probably the most valuable single purchase they will make. NEW statistics published by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) have shown that crime across NSW has primarily remained stable across the past two years. This report details trends in criminal incidents, violent and property offences over the 60 months to June 2021. The Port Stephens LGA has seen an annual increase of 3.1% in violent offences, however property offences have dropped 7.3% annually. The only major offence to show a significant upward trend in the 24 months to June 2021 was sexual assault. Recorded incidents of sexual assault rose 21.0% year-on-year to June 2021 (up 1,367 incidents). Over twelve months to June 2021,

Dear Petra, Isn't it interesting that in a pandemic it is not the politicians or the academics or the fashion designers that we miss. It is the essential workers: psychologists and hairdressers. In fact, for many of us these are one and the same. A hairdresser is not just someone who makes you look better, they make you feel better because they will happily play with your hair while you unload, which is really all most of us want. Now, in the absence of your hairdresser, may I suggest a home colour kit. If you are going grey, you will need a permanent colour. Now is not the time to do anything fancy such as highlights or balayage. Just try to match the colour on your ends to the colour on the box. This is, of course, impossible when you are shopping using the Click and Collect method, so do your best. You know, as we all do, that you will not look like the woman on the packet. Even the woman on the packet doesn't look like the woman on the packet. You will instead look like someone in lockdown who can't stand their hair and who is sick of wearing a beanie (particularly now the weather is warming up). There are very clear instructions on home dye packets, and I can guarantee you will probably ignore quite a few of them (the good old patch test for example). But do try to wear the enclosed gloves or you will end up with looking as though you've also done a home-tan job.

Free swimming lessons for kids during Learn2Swim Week 2021

SWIMMING is one of the most important skills that Aussie kids can learn. Local swim schools will be offering free swim lessons for children under the age of five to help spread the skills that keep our kids safe in the water. Kids Alive is a program created by famous swim coach Laurie Lawrence. The program has become a national institution with its support from athletes and celebrities and the catch phrase “Kids Alive - do the five”.

Every year in Australia an average of 12 kids drown and backyard pools account for half of these deaths. The Learn2Swim Week initiative, supported by the Poolwerx pool maintenance network, aims to provide every child under the age of five the chance to learn to swim. By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens beaches are back under patrol, making a day out at the beach a great way to enjoy essential exercise safely. For our Surf Life Savers, COVID has created a new set of procedures and protocols but our local volunteers are ready to support the community. The commitment of volunteers through the NSW Surf Life Saving Clubs is huge – they literally save lives simply by being there. Every person that makes the safe decision to swim between the flags is utilising the combined knowledge of locals that understand the beach conditions.
