50 Years A Member By Marian SAMPSON
97 not out is a pretty good innings and one Mr James Page of Raymond Terrace is proud to have reached. Mr Page was honoured this week for his 50 year membership of the NSW RSL. Mr Page served with the Royal Navy on the battleship HMS KING GEORGE V during World War II. He subsequently moved from the UK to Australia and joined the Royal Australian Navy. In 1956, Mr Page settled in Raymond Terrace where he has contributed to our community and the RSL for more than half a century. At 97 years of age, Mr Page is the oldest member of the Raymond Terrace RSL sub-branch and one of the few remaining WWII veterans in our community. This week he received a standing ovation at the subbranch’s annual luncheon held in anticipation of ANZAC Day. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “On behalf of the people
of Port Stephens, I was honoured to present Mr James Page with his 50 years of membership with RSL NSW.” HMS King George V had a vital role in WWII. The vessel was the lead ship of the five British King George V-class battleships of the Royal Navy. HMS King George V operated in all three major theatres of WWII, the Atlantic,

who has a lot of say about how autism is currently portrayed in the media. “We’re not unintelligent, I’ve seen that shown in media a lot,” Jessica said. “People make movies about us and they will make us look like we’re so incapable. “There is no need to treat us like we’re still kids, even when we’re in our twenties. “I have thought we would have better representation [by now] but sadly I’m sort of used to seeing that right now for people who are deemed marginalised. “It makes people not very accepting towards me, but I hope it changes.” Jessica hopes that one day portrayal of characters with autism will align closer to real life, and all the success that people with autism are able to achieve. Local mum Cate Richardson, whose son Chris has autism, told News Of The Area, “Autistic children struggle in crowds, loud noise and bright lights.

ANZAC Day In Port Stephens

ANZAC Day will be commemorated in many different ways in 2021. For some the Light Up The Dawn will be their way of showing respect for those who have served and continue to serve. For others attending a local service at a cenotaph will be on the calendar. Others still will look up and see the RAAF fly past and send our thoughts to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice be it in the air, on the ground, or at sea. This year in Port Stephens we will be seeing a range of ANZAC Day activities for veterans and the community to participate in. Nelson Bay will see a 10.30am Anzac Day service in Apex Park followed by a lunch at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers for invited guests while Medowie will hold a Dawn Service for members of the sub branch. In Tanilba Bay a 5.45am Dawn Service will be held at Tilligerry RSL Sports Club war memorial followed by gunfire breakfast for gold coin donation.
This will be followed by a March at 9.30am from the southern gates of Avenue of the Allies, Tanilba Bay to the club for a 9.45am service. Raymond Terrace RSL SubBranch will hold an ANZAC Day Dawn Service and ANZAC Day Main Service in ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace; and an ANZAC Day Service at the “Knitting Circle” memorial on Newline Road, East Seaham; on Sunday 25 April. Raymond Terrace RSL will hold a Dawn Service at the War Memorial in ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace, “ParticIpants” will assemble by 05:45am for a Service which will run from 05:50am until 06:20am. A “Gunfire Breakfast” will be held in the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club on completion of the Service, however numbers may be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time. The East Seaham “Knitting Circle” Memorial Service will be held at the “Knitting Circle”
memorial, Newline Rd., East Seaham. “Participants” will assemble by 08:50am for a Service which will run from 09:00am until 09:30am. The Raymond Terrace Main Service will be held at the War Memorial in ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace, “Participants” will assemble by 10:50am for a Service which will run from 11:00am until 11:40am. Refreshments will be available in the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club on completion of the Service, however numbers may be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time. In Karuah there will be a 5.45am March from the garage on the Old Pacific Highway to Memorial Park for 6am Dawn Service followed by a ticketed breakfast at the RSL Club. Vic Jones, President Raymond Terrace RSL SubBranch told News Of The Area, “While Anzac Day services will be scaled back
to some degree this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, ANZAC Day commemorations are iconic events in our national calendar and Port Stephens residents are encouraged to be involved in some form of commemoration on the day. “Not every resident or visitor will have the opportunity to gather at one of the Services being held to honour our ANZACs, but I would still encourage them to take the time to remember our veterans by participating in the national Light Up the Dawn campaign which was so well-supported last year. “By decorating your driveway, fence or letterbox, and coming to the end of your driveway with a light or candle before the dawn, you and your neighbours will also be ensuring that the spirit of the ANZAC’s is commemorated on this special day. “We can all honour the ANZACS by observing a Service or participating in Light Up the Dawn again this year. Remember, on ANZAC Day: Honour the Fallen, Cheer the Survivors, Care for the Wounded, Reach out to a Friend,” he said.

New Alliance to make the Hunter an Age Friendly Community
HUNTER Ageing Alliance spokesperson, and geriatrician, Dr John Ward, said there is not enough attention on meeting the needs of the growing number of local older people. The Alliance has been meeting with key groups, including through a forum of 50 local political, business, and community leaders held last month, to gain agreement on the problems, priorities, and way forward. People over 65 will soon make up a quarter of the region’s population and the number of people over 85 will double in the next 20 years. Dr Ward said the Royal Commission on Quality and Safety in Aged Care has shone a spotlight on the crisis in residential aged care as well as home and community care.
The number of older homeowners is declining and the number of older women becoming homeless is growing. Social housing stock is declining and waiting lists can be more than ten years. He said ageing issues were far greater than aged care and accommodation. “Ageism and the organisation of communities is denying older people of their right to be physically, intellectually, socially and sexually active,” Dr Ward said. “Some people living alone are lonely for substantial parts of the week and depression is common,” he said. “Facilities, events and infrastructure are often not designed with the needs of older people in mind.” One of the Alliance’s solutions is for the region
to become a World Health Organisation (WHO) Age Friendly Community. The WHO has produced a guide, and established a global support network, around eight areas that cities and communities can address to better adapt their structures and services to the needs of older people: the built environment, transport, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication, and community support and health services. “We can use this proven framework to rise above the blame game and tokenism and take action to promote healthy and active ageing and a good quality of life for older people.” “We need new types of

Stockton Erosion Gets Funding By Marian SAMPSON WHILE Council has plans on exhibition and is seeking community feedback on what is hoped to be the long term solution for erosion at Stockton Beach, there is some good news. The NSW Government has provided more than $768,000 to the City of Newcastle Council under the 2020-2021 Coastal and Estuary Grants Program. Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock congratulated Council on successfully acquiring three grants that will assist them in dealing with coastal erosion issues at Stockton Beach. “This funding will enable Council to investigate the suitability and feasibility of delivering sand dredged from the South Arm of the Hunter River estuary to potentially deliver mass sand
nourishment at Stockton Beach,” Mrs Hancock said. The approved grants also include emergency funding under the Government’s Significant Open Hazard Locations stream following erosion events that impacted Stockton Beach last year. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the Berejiklian Government is committed to supporting the City of Newcastle in their efforts to manage their coastlines. “This funding is yet another investment in Stockton as we work with the Council to shore up the coastline and protect our communities,” Mr Martin said. “The NSW Government has made the Coastal and Estuary Grants Program available to support local Council’s manage their local coasts and I am glad that Newcastle Council has taken this opportunity to apply for

funding and take the next steps to protect Stockton Beach.” There are currently five funding streams under the Coastal and Estuary Grants Program. One stream is for planning and studies, while the other four are for implementing works identified in certified coastal or estuary management plans. “Councils are encouraged to apply for funding to undertake planning and studies at any time during the year, while applications for funding to implement works are available annually,” Mrs Hancock said. The grant program aims to help manage risks from coastal hazards, such as coastal erosion, restore degraded coastal habitats and improve the health of estuaries, wetlands and littoral rainforests across New South Wales.

You’ll love our weather, big skies, beaches and that wonderful feeling of space and freedom that comes with our coveted, relaxed lifestyle. If I’ve read your query correctly, you think you need to choose between fruit and ornamentals. It doesn’t have to be that way. Also, free yourself from the idea that you need a specific ‘orchard’. Mix fruit trees with ornamentals and you’ll have a wonderful range of practical and decorative trees. Plus, many fruit trees do brilliantly in pots: lemon, lime, orange spring to mind, and of course their vibrant colour is delightful. You could also mix fruiting pear trees with the beautiful and stately Manchurian or Capital Ornamental Pears. Their Autumn colours are simply breathtaking. You can espalier fruit trees as well, so you’ll have the practical fruit element with a stunning ornamental aspect. One thing you should be careful of though is fruit fly. Ensure you select fruits not prone to attack, keep your trees small and cover them with bird-safe netting to avoid ruining fruit and fruit-fly accessibility. Fish killing frenzy on Fingal Bay OPINION DEAR News Of The Area, WE have recently moved to Shoal Bay and this afternoon around 2.30pm, my partner and I ventured down to the southern end of Fingal Bay beach. We were disgusted to see tens of thousands of live fish being dragged up the beach in nets by people driving utes. It was a revolting and cruel spectacle to see and we left immediately. We had observed these same utes driving up the beach the day before and wondered what they were up to. They had no signage on their vehicles, no flashing lights or warning signs for adults and children walking on the beach at the

Safe People Safe Places NSW Police urge locals to stay safe amid Medowie incidents

MEDOWIE locals have recently reported young children in the area being followed by a white van. In the local community forum on Facebook, one local reached out to warn parents and caregivers to be cautious in the Medowie area after the original poster’s son was followed twice in recent times by a van. New South Wales Police Force Assistant Commissioner Jeff Loy said, “The safety and wellbeing of our children is important to us all. “As parents and carers, we can't always be with our children to advise and protect them walking or riding to or from school, on public transport, or if they're out with friends. “Children can be confronted with situations where a right response is vital. “With this in mind advising our children with deliberate responses to certain situations will help them avoid trouble and danger.” Assistant Commissioner Jeff Loy, together with the New South Wales Police Force issued the following advice utilising the ‘Safe People,
Safe Places’ practice. “When walking home, always identify safe places for your children like a school, shop or church that they can go to if they feel frightened. “Ensure that they know not to stop and talk to people that they don't know, and to instead, go straight home. “Teach children to never get into a car with someone they don't know unless told to by a parent or carer. “On public transport, children should never travel in isolated areas- on a train find a crowded carriage and if travelling on a bus, ride near the driver.” Jeff Loy also recommended that children always try to travel in groups of friends if possible using the buddy system, as well as ensuring children carry or have easy access to a contact number for parents or caregivers. It is crucial to have conversations with children to help them stay safe in dangerous situations. Medowie parents and caregivers are urged to be more cautious than usual to ensure the safety for all.

THE stages of washing are never-ending, so to have to wait for five hours before you can even start the process seems absolutely ridiculous. Laundromats or shared-accommodation laundries are cool places when depicted in movies. There's always an edgy looking girl (who can't afford a washing machine but can afford killer Mary-Jane shoes, a leather jacket and an ironic beanie) perched on a seat, her legs crossed in a provocative manner, flicking through a magazine, and a hapless dude who accidentally goes to the wrong machine and takes out her lacy underwear. Then she giggles instead of slapping him across the face and they leave their washing to hail a cab (this is an American movie) before starting a Woody Allen-type romance (the sort he depicts in his movies, not his real-life romance that involves his adopted child - that would be a turn off for viewers). The reality is quite different. The first shared laundromat I experienced was when I moved out of home and lived in an apartment complex. At the time I was a frazzled first-time mum washing baby clothes, so to be confronted with a 'cold water only' machine that invariably had smelly tradie clothes in it was a crass and unhappy introduction to adulthood. Personally, I would say ten minutes is an acceptable time to leave clothes that have finished their cycle in the washing machine. You would actually be doing the person a favour by putting them in an open space to air. You could leave a little note saying 'dear owner of boxer shorts with a tacky fish print and the Rolling Stones shirt that has not aged as well as Mick Jagger, I have removed your items so I can do my own washing and left them to air in the communal basket someone thoughtfully left behind. Australian Pied Oystercatcher By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens is home to many different species. One is a very rare bird, the Australian Pied Oystercatcher. The Port Stephens estuary is an important shorebird habitat with 3,000 birds across 31 different species surveyed in recent years.
The endangered pied oystercatcher is a local shorebird that breeds in the estuary. In Summer, many locations like Karuah and Swan Bay become feeding and roosting spots for pied oystercatchers and other migratory shorebirds including bar-tailed godwits and grey-tailed tattlers.
These migratory shorebirds travel up to 25,000 kilometres each year between their breeding grounds in the Arctic to join our local species in the Port. Port Stephens Council is a member of the Port Stephens Estuary Working Group with Hunter Local Land Services, BirdLife and the NSW
Department of Environment. The aim of the working group is to protect important shorebird habitats and limit threats to shorebirds like dogs and 4WDs. The NSW Department Planning Industry and Environment tells us to “Look out for bird nesting signs or roped-off nesting areas on the beach and follow the advice. “Walk your dogs on dogfriendly beaches only and always keep them on a leash,

unless you’re on a designated off-leash beach. “Drive only on designated beaches and keep below the high-tide mark. “When you’re near a nesting area, stick to the wet sand and give the birds plenty of space.” The Hunter Bird Observers Club have noted that The Endangered Australian Pied Oystercatcher occurs near undisturbed sandy and shelly shorelines throughout all of
Australia and southern New Guinea, where it feeds on small bivalves and worms. Port Stephens is the main area in NSW in which Australian Pied Oystercatchers accumulate. In regular summer and winter surveys of Port Stephens, conducted by members of HBOC, Australian Pied Oystercatchers are found to congregate (feeding and roosting) around Dowardee Island.

Heart Pen Letter Sharing Love For Mother’s Day By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens resident November Sheehan is a lady that has a big heart. It can be seen sharing love right across Australia in her initiative Heart Pen Letter. Heart Pen Letter was started during COVID-19 when nursing homes were locked down and residents were being socially isolated. It was meant to be something to help the locals – now it is a nationwide network
that is continuing to grow. November Sheehan told News Of The Area, “This is our first Mother’s Day and we are sending cards all up and down the east coast through Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.” November will be personally delivering the cards to Port Stephens nursing homes. “I have personally made 2,000 cards for Mother’s Day and we have now made Card
School Packs which students are working on. “The students colour in the cards and write a few words on the inside for the residents,” she said. St Philip’s Christian College, Tomaree Public School, Shoal Bay Public School and Tomaree High School are all involved in completing Heart Letter Pen letters which will lift the spirits of those living in care. also include Thinking of You Cards for those that may have lost a child or not have their own children. There are now Heart Pen Letter Boxes in Medowie and Raymond Terrace as well as across the Bay you can find locations on the Facebook Page. Heart Pen Letter now has 445 members from as far afield as Western Australia and these members either make cards for the project or write cards that others have made. November is seeking donations of cards and more members to make or write cards. The initiative focuses on three key events each year and the boxes are in place for 8 weeks for each event, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas. You can help by donating cards, prepaid post satchels or writing messages which show that we have a community with heart. Heart Pen Letter boxes are picked up and dropped off by a crew from Sunnyfield Disability Services which allows those with disability to be active in their community. Heart Pen Letter started on Facebook and has grown into a grass roots feel good cause which shows Australia that Port Stephens is a place full of love.

Ireland’s Interest in Port Stephens’ Industry Innovation Ireland’s Ambassador to Australia says a recent tour to Port Stephens’ worldleading industrial spaces provides unique opportunities for collaboration

BREANDÁN Ó Caollaí joined last week’s EU Trade Mission to Williamtown and Tomago where they witnessed the groundbreaking technologies of BAE Systems, Ampcontrol and more. The trade mission is the fifth in three years and forms part of the State Government’s strategy to increase investment in regional NSW. On Friday, the delegates were given a hands-on approach at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources. Ambassador Ó Caollaí says Australia’s advanced technology is part of why the region is so successful. “That’s why the Australian economy is doing so well particularly now given COVID
19 and all the challenges we’re facing,” he said He believes “that kind of top-end technology will be one of the paths out of this,” and that is what makes the region’s investment opportunities so attractive. When comparing Port Stephens and his experience in Dublin, he said, “When I was young we were a poor country so we had to create our advantages.” “Ireland needs to be attracting investment, that’s what really has transformed our economy,” Mr Ó Caollaí said. “We’re very similar, we’re hungry, we’re ambitious and we have certain commonalities,” he explained. “We have a beautiful country, it’s great for tourism, our agriculture is very important but it is
diminishing in significance.” He said [Ireland needs] “to be in a 21st-century economy and that’s very much where Williamtown and Tomago are.” When reflecting on the tour and looking to the future, Ambassador Ó Caollaí was amazed at, “the variety and the intensity of what we visited both across the commercial sector and the academic sector. “We have no current free trade agreement with Australia, I think there is potential for close cooperation between Australia and each European member state,” he said. “So when Australia and the Hunter want to export its expertise in partnerships in the European Union, you’ll have a friend in Ireland,” he finished.
The University is calling for divers to contribute their old and new diving photos, videos, observations and knowledge to a new UNSW Sydney research project. The hope is that the images and recollections collected through the Bygone Dives project will lead to a better understanding of how the underwater world has changed over recent decades.
“Old dive photos hold a wealth of information, and potentially valuable scientific data on the past health of reefs and the species that were present,” lead researcher and PhD candidate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UNSW Sydney, Chris Roberts said. “We can use these photos and observations to

Many underwater changes may have gone undocumented as they occur over time scales that are beyond most scientific studies, she said. However, many recreational divers will have likely observed and recorded such changes over many years or even decades while visiting their favourite dive sites. Currently most of this valuable information is stored in personal archives and collections, often largely unused. Mr Roberts is hoping to motivate people to recover these valuable underwater photos from forgotten drawers or hard-drives so that they can be used for research. Project co-leader Professor Alistair Poore from UNSW Science said that by obtaining a better understanding of the past, this project aims to unlock information that can help conserve reefs into the future. “Recreational divers gathering and sharing
photographs and videos, combined with image recognition technology, could enable increased monitoring of marine life at many reefs rarely visited by professional scientists,” Prof. Poore said. Divers who want to contribute photos to the project should upload them to the In Bygone Dives iNaturalist page. Chris Roberts told News Of The Area, “I had heard about the impact that the floods had on Fly Point, but I have yet to go up there and see for myself. “Impacts such as these are definitely the sort of thing we think recreational diving photos could be good at monitoring. “A similar impact occurred at Halifax some time back now, where a lot of the life was buried by shifting sands and this change is one we think we could potentially explore using old diving photos,” he said. Local Melissa Gole told News Of The Area, “I’m concerned about the loss of the Medowie bank because we are about to have two new over 55 villages, I work in aged care, and we have a lot of older people who still operate on cash.” Brooke Vitnell, a local business operator in Medowie said, “I believe this is a step backwards for Medowie.” Medowie has between 11,000 and 15,000 people living locally all of whom will have to travel over 30 minutes each way to access face to face banking when the branch closes.

Nelson Bay Croquet Club Success at Hunter Challenge TORONTO Croquet Club hosted the inaugural Division 3 Hunter Challenge Golf Croquet Doubles on Tuesday 13 April 2021. 15 doubles pairs from across the Hunter region clubs were divided into 3 blocks based on handicap.
Each block played a round robin of 4 games of level play. Nelson Bay Croquet Club entered three doubles pairs with Sherry Gordon and Rae Uptin playing in Block A, Victor Goodsir & Jan Puckeridge in Block B and Barry Elliott & Ian Spight contesting Block C.

SPARTAN Race is coming to Port Stephens and with it comes a range of physical challenges. This is far more than a fun run and will test the limits of those who participate. Spartan Race is a leader in the sport of obstacle racing, offering open heats for all fitness levels, as well as competitive and elite heats for those with something more to prove. The first of its kind to feature timing and global rankings, Spartan Race provides a proving ground for beginner and professional obstacle racers looking to test themselves in new ways across the world.
