Community comes together for Medowie’s 7 Day Makeover

The program was instigated after the success of the Anna Bay 7 Day Makeover which created a sense of place for the beachside town. Now the leafy rural town centre of Medowie has its own theme and sense of place. Port Stephens Central Ward Councillor Chris Doohan couldn’t be happier with the results of the program. He told News Of The Area, “What an amazing week for Medowie. “The transformation of our town is nothing short of incredible. “I’m immensely proud and honoured to have been part of this epic event. “The town transformation is impressive, but even more importantly the community bonding that happened over the last seven days is inspiring. “The legacy left for the next generation has been laid. “Good on you Medowie, you are awesome,” he said. Medowie’s 7 Day Makeover, like the Anna Bay one, showed that the Port Stephens community is a giving one.

Medowie’s Makeover set records, with the program claiming the most volunteers in one day with 201 locals turning out to lend a hand. The youngest ever volunteer was also on the books at the tender age of 10 weeks old. Importantly Medowie’s makeover was made all the better due to the $63,000 raised, of all of which has been spent with the exception of just $100.

"Working through the design and budgeting process, it seemed to some a bit daunting, but the enthusiasm of the project groups soon took over with many keen to start work immediately. "The civic area has been a hive of activity for the last seven days, full of

volunteers and tradies lending a hand. "The transformation has been wonderful, and now Medowie has an amazing civic entrance, one that everyone should be proud of,” he said. There was also a special nod to Geoff Dingle who was a passionate resident who planted and cared for one of the parks, with a sign in place honouring his commitment to the space and community. Medowie is certainly on the map, so if you haven’t been to Medowie recently, now is the time to visit this leafy township and enjoy the fruits of our community's labours.

Recovering From The Severe Weather Event FROM Page 1

to prioritise these projects and seek approvals. “We are currently reviewing the Anna Bay Flood Study in accordance with NSW Government best practice. “We will consider the need for additional pumps through this process.” Facilities and Services Manager Greg Kable said the repairs to Foreshore Drive are imminent and would be completed by the end of 2021. “We’re working with Transport for NSW to secure funding under a natural disaster claim and we’re expecting to know more about design and timeframes of the rebuild by mid-May. “A full Environmental Impact

Statement (EIS) has already been conducted and will be used for replacement works. “The wetland is a precious environmental asset and will benefit with the new structure. “In terms of design, what we know already is that the replacement structure will also allow for bikes and pedestrians,” Mr Kable said. Kable said assessments of landslips at Marine Drive Fingal Bay and two others at Teramby Road Nelson Bay were underway. “Our number one priority is the slip at the end of Teramby Road, and we’re working closely with the business owner who’s been affected since the storm first hit. “We’ve had slope stability assessments done by

geotechnical engineers and we’re expecting those reports back later this week. “The report will look at immediate and long-term fixes at these sites.” Other damage at Kallaroo Road and Corlette Point Road, Corlette, is being scoped and works expected within the next fortnight. Meanwhile the severe flooding in Anna Bay and Stockton Ponds is easing with generator pumps remaining on site and repairs to permanent pumps underway. “Our permanent pump automatically activated during the March event and it’s been pumping continuously since,” Facilities and Services Manager Greg Kable said. “Due to the amount of rain Anna Bay received in the March event, we also accessed an additional pump.” Mr Kable also said patching the

potholes that have appeared since March was a key focus. “Procurement problems due to increased demand along the east coast means the patching work we did in those early days was of a lower quality than usual, meaning we’ll still be dealing with potholes over the next few weeks. “We know road users are frustrated, and we’re aware of the work that needs to be done, so thanks to everyone for being patient,” he said. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer has praised the community for their ongoing patience. “Our crews have been working hard to repair the damage and have already done so much — but we’ve still got more to go. I’m very grateful to our community for your ongoing patience as we get to all these jobs,” Mayor Palmer said.

Appeal for information following home invasions across Hunter POLICE are appealing for public assistance following two home invasions in the Port Stephens and Lake Macquarie regions. About 4.15am on Tuesday 23 March 2021, three men allegedly forced entry to a home at Lemon Tree Passage, and seriously assaulted a man. The men were armed with a hammer and a knife.

In the second incident, about 2pm on Thursday 25 March 2021, two men allegedly forced entry to a home at Kahibah and seriously assaulted a man. The men were armed with a pole and bat. Detectives attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District are conducting investigations into links between both

incidents. The same vehicle was reportedly used on both occasions, described as a blue Mazda6 sedan. Police are seeking to speak with three men who may be able to assist with their inquiries. They have all been described as aged in their 20s. Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have information about the incidents, or has

dashcam footage of the incidents, to contact Port Stephens-Hunter Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Major Makeover for Mallabula By Geoff WALKER

TILLIGERRY’S existing sporting complex at Mallabula is to be given a major makeover to improve the existing facilities and to make it much more user friendly. This will include access pathways, car parking and the construction of new and updated recreational and

sporting venues. And that's not all. According to Port Stephens Councillor Steve Tucker, Henderson Park at Lemon Tree Passage is to get a sail over the platform behind the pool ($90,000) and the waterfront recreational area at Tanilba Bay beside the amenities block is to be upgraded ($40 000). “The big ticket spending

will be at Mallabula,” he said. “This will transform the area into a sporting and recreational hub with much improved facilities,” he added. The planned expenditure is as follows: Skate park: $230,000; new tennis court: $200,000; soccer and Little Athletics amenity block: $200,000; multipurpose court, playground and pathways

CONCERNS have been raised around the potential sale of 615 lots of land within the Port Stephens Local Government Area. This comes off the back of a newly launched Government Property Index which lists all land owned by the NSW State Government. The index includes National Parks, Crown land including foreshore spaces in Port Stephens, such as the parkland on Beach Road at Little Beach. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Prior to the 2019 state election, Premier Berejiklian promised on national television that

there would be no more privatisations. “She said ‘No, no, no, and if we were we would have told you’. “The Premier has broken that promise. “And now, 615 parcels of public land in Port Stephens have appeared on a government website seeking privatisation proposals. “Local school grounds are on the list. “Precious public foreshore land is on the list. “Parts of our local cemeteries are on the list. “It’s a disgrace. “Our community will never forget the Government’s terrible track record selling Mambo Wetlands to a property

JET SKIS are a popular form of leisure craft, one that raises contentious issues. These range from noise pollution to illegal operation of the craft. The issues peak in school holidays when tourists flock to the region to access the Port with their craft which are banned on Sydney Harbour. Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) has received reports on the increasing impacts of jet skis on marine animals including dolphins, whales, turtles and little penguins. These animals find it difficult to take evasive action due to the low underwater noise emitted by approaching jet skis. There are also threats to swimmers on the many heavily used beaches around the Bay, and noise pollution affecting both residents and visitors. TRRA President, Ben van

NSW Transport tells us that, “In restriction zones, PWC must not be used for 'irregular driving' within 200m of a river bank or shore. “This means they must be operated generally in a straight line within 200m of the shoreline.” Irregular driving includes activities like; driving in a circle or other pattern; weaving or diverting and surfing down or jumping over or across, any swell, wave or wash with penalties applicable if the rules are broken. In NSW PWC restriction zone rules apply to these waters (including tributaries): Avoca Lake; Botany Bay; Brisbane Water; Broken Bay; Bulbararing Lagoon; Cockrone Lagoon; Cooks River; Dee Why Lagoon; Georges River; Hawkesbury River; Manly

Reservoir; Manly Lagoon; Narrabeen Lakes; Nepean River; Port Hacking; Prospect Reservoir; Terrigal Lagoon; Wamberal Lagoon; and the Woronora River but not on Port Stephens or the Myall River or Myall Lakes. Interestingly, Jet Skis are also banned in Cape Byron Marine Park, however the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park has no such protection. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “Since COVID hit our shores, the number of jet skis on our beautiful waterways has risen noticeably. With that, noise impacts and safety concerns have also risen. “I’ve reported residents’ concerns to the Minister for Transport and Roads. “Unfortunately the response simply recounted the government’s inadequate rules and a hotline residents could call. “I thank the TRRA for their advocacy and look forward to meeting with them next week to discuss solutions to ensure everyone can safely enjoy our pristine waterways,” she said.

WE’RE a nation of sport lovers and participants who are proud of and inspired by our Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games athletes, with new data from Sport Australia showing four in five of us are proud of the athletes representing the nation at these global events. Sport Australia’s latest AusPlay report found that 10.4 million Australian adults play an Olympic sport and 1.8 million volunteer in Olympic sports. Minister for Sport, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck said the upcoming Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics present another great opportunity to get Australians more active and involved in sport. “The report shows that Australians love

participating in Olympic sports and also feel a lot of pride and are inspired by our Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games athletes further highlighting that sport really is an essential part of Australian life.” It is also a ringing endorsement for Australia’s current bid to host the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics. Sport Australia Acting CEO Rob Dalton said the results show the Olympics and Paralympics impact us all, whether it’s playing a sport, volunteering or being inspired watching our Olympians and Paralympians compete. “Just over 7 million Australians participate in athletics, swimming or cycling each year, making them the most popular Olympic sports,” Mr Dalton said. Athletics (including running/jogging) is the most

popular sport for men while swimming is the most popular sport for women. When it comes to Olympic team sports, football/soccer and basketball are played the most. “More men participate in shooting, rugby union and mountain biking, while more female participants enjoy equestrian, gymnastics and softball,” Mr Dalton added. The top three Paralympic sports are swimming, cycling and athletics making them the same as Olympic sports but in a different order. Mr Dalton said now is the perfect time to get involved in sport, either as a participant or volunteer adding that you don’t have to play the sport you volunteer in. “Sports such as rugby union, football/soccer, gymnastics and basketball have a higher number of volunteers who don’t play. In many cases, this could be a parent volunteering to coach

Port Probus Clubs Riverboat Mailman Cruise By Marian SAMPSON

FOR some residents of NSW the mail is delivered a little differently. We are not talking about a drone drop; what we are talking about is a ferry service. For those living on the Hawkesbury River there is a tradition that sees the mail delivered by the Riverboat Mailman. On the mighty Hawkesbury River, 60 members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens, led by the lovely Fran Wathen, made the coach journey to Brooklyn and the Hawkesbury River Station to join the

Riverboat Postman cruise, and cover 40 kilometres of the river going as far as Marlow Creek. David Heath of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “On boarding the Riverboat we were served tea, coffee and homemade Anzac biscuits by the very cheerful and energetic crew. “Out on deck and on top level the views of the river and nature are stunning, and the Captains commentary on the history of the different settlements, and the eventual spanning of the river with a prefabricated steel bridge,

was a delve back into the past and the pioneering spirit that stretched across Australia in those days.” Throughout the journey The Riverboat Postie stopped to deliver mail and goodies to residents that don’t have, and probably don’t want, a road. “Lunchtime gave way to a very well prepared and very fresh ploughman’s style lunch, prepared and cheerfully served by the crew, with care and attention to gluten and other dietary requirements. “The bar service throughout was good and at prices that left your wallet with its original thickness.”

The three and a half hour journey covers 40 kilometres of the lower Hawkesbury River, and the very informative and historical details are covered with entertaining commentary by the skipper. “The journey home to the Bay on our Port Stephens Coaches bus was another wave of information from our skilful driver Mark, and arrival at the coach depot brought a round

Social Inaugural Bowls Gala By Louise CLEMENTS SUNSHINE, breeze, bowlers and a BBQ were the perfect ingredients for our inaugural Medowie Social Bowls Gala. We had a fantastic turnout with 24 bowlers coming from as close as Tea Gardens while others from Mornington Peninsula in Victoria came to enjoy a day of fun and a little competition. We had two very close games on the day with the first being Bev and Warwick Lowe scraping home against Joanne and David Boucher 15/14 and our second between Adam Clements and Gary Higgs nudging out Jason Price and John Hall

I can’t write this report without mentioning one of our funny moments throughout the day, with two of our players pausing for the “smooch” on the change over. I think this might have been a tactic to put the opponents off but sadly it wasn’t effective and they lost by just one shot. As we all know it wouldn’t be a game of bowls if we didn’t have “the wrong bias” bowled. I promised not to mention names; this time; but the gold coin donation was very quickly handed

over. Our prize winners on the day were A. Clements and G. Higgs for the winning rink and M and J Ware for the runners-up rink. Our “play of the day” winner was J. Taylor from Maitland City Bowling Club for his amazing bowling skills displayed throughout the

He realized his situation too late and despite trying to recover from the dive, crashed into the mud flats at low water. Vampires served with the RAAF between 1949 and 1960 and were produced as both a single seat fighter and a two seat trainer.

Local Swimmers Bring Home Medals and Set Records By Marian SAMPSON

LOCAL swimmer Ebony Nix has been enjoying a winning streak off the back of some serious training and hard work. Ebony has recently competed in the National Swimming Championships and the State School Championships where she has had some great success. Ebony was among three

swimmers from Nelson Bay Swim Club to compete at the Nationals. She was there alongside Randal Ingram and Taylor Corry. Nix competed in the 13 year old girls with Randal Ingram in the 14 year old boys. She took out Silver in the 100 metre butterfly event for her age group with a personal best of 1.03:20 seconds.

She also came 4th in the 200 metre butterfly with another amazing personal best of 2.22. Pamela Nix Borthwick told News Of The Area, “After the Nationals she competed in the School State Championships and got a state record in the 100 butterfly as well as a gold in the 50 free and a silver in the 100 backstroke.” Other members of the Nelson Bay Swim Club also did well at the nationals with Randal Ingram coming in as the second fastest 14 year q

old in the country for the 200 breaststroke at the Nationals. Also of note was Taylor Corry who took out Gold for in the 50 metre butterfly, bronze in the 50 metre backstroke and silver in the 100 metre butterfly. The Nelson Bay Swimming Club is located at Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Salamander Bay, in beautiful Port Stephens and part of the Coast & Valley Swimming Association. The club is very proud of the achievement of the swimmers who represented them at the nationals.

IT’S amazing what a difference a week can make. Last week, the Medowie 7 Day Makeover transformed the town centre through pure people-power. Medowie local Councillor Chris Doohan says the makeover has been a huge success. “With a little elbow grease, almost 200 volunteers created a vibrant and welcoming town centre. “The park next to Medowie Community Centre now has a fairy garden, sensory trail and a new reading stage. There’s relaxed wave seating is throughout the town, while artistic leaves and a huge mural show off Medowie’s creative side,” he said. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said it has been a true community effort. “I want to thank everyone who helped in any way — no matter how big or small — to make this makeover a success! “If you haven’t been down to check out the results, go and spend some time in Medowie and enjoy the newly transformed town centre,” he said. This week is an opportunity to celebrate another important community space — our libraries. Council’s Library Services Manager Kris Abbott says Library & Information Week is a great opportunity to reconnect with your local library. “We want our libraries to be welcoming and inclusive places for everyone — where you can learn something new, get involved in your community and have some fun! “Every year we ask our users to tell us how satisfied they are with our services. “This year we’re also asking people who aren’t current members what would encourage them to return, as we’d love to see even more people rediscover their local library,” she said. BEAUTIFYING MY NATURE STRIP “I’d like to beautify my nature strip. Are there any processes I need to look at?” AS property owners, we don’t own the land that constitutes our nature strip, yet Councils expect us to care for and maintain it. Additionally, if there are existing trees or shrubbery we can’t cut/remove them – they’re Council assets and Council’sresponsibility – consequently nature strips have become a bit of a grey area. Nature strips have practical functions, predominantly ensuring clear sight lines for pedestrians and traffic, but that doesn’t mean we’re all consigned to maintaining wastelands. Rules vary between Councils regarding what can be done. Some Councils prevent any plantings, others are more flexible but have strict guidelines. Still other Councils have fully embraced residents’ requests to plant vegetable gardens, or small shrubs/flowering plants with spectacular results: reducingtraffic pollution, creating shade, thereby reducing that hideous bare asphalt heat, reducing run-off and providing welcome safe havens for insects and birds. And one of the best results? The improvements in human health and wellbeing by providing not only an aesthetically pleasing vision but a means for the community to connect and engage. AFTER just retiring recently to Shoal Bay I have been telling my family and friends how beautiful this hidden little treasure is, calling it the North Shore of Nelson Bay. That is until these cheap nasty parklets arrived. They serve absolutely no purpose except for one cafe. They have completely devalued and cheapened the look of Shoal bay.

Now that the foreshore is under renovation and even more parking is temporarily taken away, it is extremely urgent that these Parklets be removed immediately. Police continue to search for missing Pindimar man

POLICE are re-appealing for public assistance to locate a man missing from Pindimar. Allan Bentley, aged 63, was reported missing to the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District on Thursday 29 April 2021; CCTV footage has confirmed he was last seen leaving his home on Pindimar Road, Pindimar, for work about 7.30am on Tuesday 27 April 2021. Police have conducted extensive land and air searches – with the assistance of PolAir – however have not located Mr Bentley or his vehicle. Police and friends are concerned for his welfare as he hasn’t attended several pre-arranged appointments which is out of character. Allan is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 179cm tall, of medium build

with short brown and grey hair and a beard. It is believed he may be driving a white coloured Holden combo van, with NSW registration UQG-146, which has ‘catering’ written on the side. He may also have power tools and firewood on board his vehicle. He is known to frequent the Pindimar, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, North Arm Cove, Hexham and Karuah areas for both work and personal purposes. Cheryl and Jim won the final 7-5 to become NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles State Champions. In the fifth to eighth playoff Kay and Rae beat Lorraine Sheargold and John Reynolds (EDSACC) 7-3 and then Helen Chalmers and Ruth Mulvaney (Toronto) 7-6 to finish fifth.
