What’s next for Raymond Terrace? NEW places for people to gather and spend time are on the way for William Street in Raymond Terrace to create a more vibrant town centre and support local businesses. In the first stage of works, Port Stephens Council plans to deliver three art-inspired shade structures featuring new seating and greenery underneath, lighting and cameras to improve safety, and improved accessible car parking. munity about their vision for Raymond Terrace including what they love about the town centre and what could be improved,” he said. “We heard they want more shady spots and street furniture, public art, trees and greenery, and improved lighting and safety. “These works are all about delivering on our community’s vision, which is captured in our award-winning new Public Domain Plan — a long-term plan to revitalise the town centre and create better public spaces. “With the beautiful river, our Jacaranda-lined streets and a wide array of businesses and services, Raymond Terrace is a great place to spend time and it’s about to get even better. These works are all about creating places for people to relax, stay a little longer and support our local businesses. “And this is just the start — we’re continuing to work with our community to plan Stage 2 works that will see more of the town centre spruced with things like landscaping, art, shade, seating and safer pedestrian crossing. “We’re also getting to work on extending the footpath along the river levee bank and making improvements to nearby Bettles Park to make the area even more attractive for locals and visitors alike,” he said. There will be some changes to parking as a result of the works including improved accessible parking, moving five spaces

“Instead, the Government is expanding the two high schools in Raymond Terrace so they never have to build one in Medowie.”

Ms Washington welcomes the upgrades in Raymond Terrace which she believes are desperately needed, however she believes that the underlying expansion plans are a ruse, locking in an unfair situation for years to come. Of great concern to Washington is that, “There is nothing in this budget to help desperate families in Port Stephens who are homeless. “Homelessness is a growing problem in our community, and we need more social and affordable housing to keep local families off the street. “After all the community campaigning and the desperate pleas from local families, the Liberal Government allocated Port Stephens a measly $67,000 for social housing. “That’s hardly enough to build one-fifth of a house,” she said.

People Power Wins Over Abalone Farm By Marian SAMPSON

THE Independent Planning Commission has advised that Austasia Leefield has withdrawn its state significant development application for the proposed Pindimar Abalone Farm project. The community remembers only too well the environmental impacts of the last failed aquaculture project for the region with Huon Aquaculture's ‘Fortress Pens’ failing off the coast in January 2018 releasing 20,000 kingfish into the environment after a severe weather event. However the potential impact to the region from this proposal was seen as far more devastating by some members of the community, as further water events, man made or otherwise, could be catastrophic to the delicate balance of the Port’s environment. In line with the applicants withdrawal of their application, the Commission has cancelled its planned stakeholder meetings and site inspection while the withdrawal is formalised by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. An electronic public meeting, scheduled for Tuesday 6 July 2021, will also now not go ahead.

Had the development application been approved the environmental impacts for Port Stephens would be significant. According to a NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment assessment, ‘The proposed farm infrastructure includes tanks, sheds and ponds to accommodate the quarantine, breeding and growing out of up to 60 tpa of Blacklip Abalone. ‘The farm would require the continuous flow of saltwater for its operations. ‘Saltwater would be sourced from the estuary of Port Stephens via two new pipelines extending into the estuary to a depth of around 15 metres (m). ‘At full production, up to 50 megalitres (ML) of marine water per day would pass through the farm systems. ‘Wastewater (effluent) would be treated to remove solids, dissolved nutrients and pathogens via filtration, settlement and algae bioremediation before being discharged via two pipelines back into the Port Stephens estuary, at a depth of around 6 m. ‘The discharge outlet is approximately 400 m north of a designated Sanctuary Zone and approximately 100 m east of a large area of Posidonia seagrass beds’. While there are successful abalone farms in Australia all of these are sited on the coast not within estuaries.

Corlette dance teacher in court over alleged sexual abuse of students A CORLETTE dance teacher has faced court charged over the alleged sexual abuse of students in the Port Stephens area. In March this year, detectives from Port StephensHunter Police District established Strike Force Wairakei to investigate reports of inappropriate behaviour by the dance teacher towards a

number of students. Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 27-year-old man at Nelson Bay about 8.30am Wednesday 23 June 2021. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with 12 offences, including three counts of aggravated indecent assault- victim under authority of offender, three

counts of indecent assault person under 16 years of age, aggravated sex assault- victim under the age of 16 years, aggravated sex assault- victim under authority of offender, assault with act of indecency, common assault, sexual intercourse reckless as to consent (ACT not NSW) and sexual intercourse with person under care (aged between 17 and 18). Police will allege in court that the man, who is a dance teacher, sexu-

ally abused four students and a girl – aged between 12 and 17 – who were known to him between 2013 and 2019. The man, from Corlette, was refused bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday 24 June 2021. As inquiries under Strike Force Wairakei continue, anyone with information is urged to contact Port Stephens detectives or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

IT is the end of an era as MarketPlace Raymond Terrace has been sold and the management team are moving on. SCA Property Group struck a deal to acquire the centre for about $87.5 million.

The centre has been a stalwart of the Raymond Terrace community, supporting many events and activities over the years.

The centre has worked with schools and community groups for many years to create positive opportunities for as many people as they could. From hosting the Positive Behaviour and Learning Program to donation boxes for those in need, MarketPlace and the team have helped our community, under the leadership of Colleen MulhollandRuiz. This week in tribute to Colleen, the Drum Corp from Irrawang High School dropped in to perform and honour Colleen for all the assistance and care that she has shown to the students at the school over the

years, many of whom Colleen has watched grow up. Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Irrawang High School’s CAPA Drum Corps gave Colleen a big, and very teary surprise on Wednesday with an unannounced short farewell performance. “As you know the centre has sold and Colleen and the team have been incredible supporters of the Raymond Terrace Community Positive Behaviour for Learning program, our whole school and specifically the Drum Corps,” she said.

Smart Parking Paying For Infrastructure in Nelson Bay By Marian SAMPSON

WHEN it comes to Smart Parking in Nelson Bay the jury is still out with some businesses still finding the new scheme potentially detrimental to trade. The Smart Parking signs which will identify where available spots are for motorists are about to be turned on. There is no hiding the fact that the Smart Parking in Nelson Bay town centre is designed to raise revenue. A council spokesperson told News Of The Area,

“Smart parking revenue has raised approximately $800,000 to date.” The good news is that the money raised in Nelson Bay will stay in the area, with the spokesperson going on to say, “All Smart Parking profits are being reinvested into the Nelson Bay town centre and foreshore — funding road and infrastructure upgrades, improvements from the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan and activities as part of the new It’s On! in Nelson Bay place activation trial.” The township is already showing some of the money

The priorities for the smart parking scheme were identified in the Smart Parking Infrastructure Program listed in the Council report on 12 May 2020. This is a list of

infrastructure works that prioritise road safety and efficiency, and also seek to fund projects from the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan.

Major Makeover for Aquatic Centre

Bradley Pool' after the community worker who was a driving force behind the idea. 2020 was a challenging year for the pool with the Covid pandemic. Patrons had to book 15 minute time slots and observe strict protocols of social distancing. Change rooms were closed and swimmers were limited to three sessions per week. Rather than close for an extended period last winter, Tilligerry remained open as both Tomaree and Lakeside were out of action due to technical issues. Regular users of these centres travelled to Mallabula for fitness workouts and squad training. Lakeside swim center will be closed for two weeks from 28 June 2021 for cafe and entry renovations. No decision has yet been made regarding a winter shutdown of the Tomaree Centre.

TILLIGERRY Aquatic Centre is to be given an upgrade during its winter shutdown. The pool will be closed between 5 July and 30 September 2021. During this time the pool will be drained, the existing vinyl membrane removed and a new fibreglass lining will replace it. The $40,000 upgrade will ensure the long term viability and integrity of the facility. Patrons will have the option of using season tickets to gain access to either Tomarre or Lakeside centres without cost or having them extended at Tilligerry for time the pool is out of action. Some 20 years ago the pool became a reality after a committee raised over $100,000 towards the $1,000,000 cost. It was named 'The Doreen

BILL Doran has decided to run for Central Ward once again in the upcoming Port Stephens Council elections. “My main objective for the term is to rebuild community trust and confidence in Council through open two way communication and common sense decision making, for the benefit of all,” Mr Doran told News Of The Area. Mr Doran said he has plans that focus on community engagement designed to tackle issues that will support community growth, our environment and set an example for other Local Government Areas in the state. He believes that this will include pushing back against State Government policy and from time to time the State Government themselves. Adding value to the Medowie community ON Saturday 26 June 10 local residents completed a nationally recognised first aid course at the Medowie Community Centre. Taking part in the course run by Business Wise First Aid were six members of the Medowie Lions Club together with one rep from each of Medowie Netball, Football, Rugby and Port Stephens AFL. Medowie Lions fully funded the course including hiring of the hall and providing lunch to the participants. “We do a lot of work that is invisible to the community,” said Club President Mr John q

MARKETPLACE Raymond Terrace has been there since day one for the Positive Behaviour and Learning program which operates across nine schools in the area. It is a testament to the team at MarketPlace and the wider community which has helped shape the future for many students living locally. The Positive Behaviour and Learning Program recognises students who contribute to the community whether it is within school or in a broader sense. This week we see demonstrations of honesty, charity, sportsmanship, leadership and kindness from our Positive Behaviour and Learning nominations. Across the board it is hard to think of a program that motivates and recognises so many young people when they excel. When it comes to charity this week’s nominee from Hunter River High School has been making a national cause, his own.

By the time they made the sequel, the folks behind Despicable Me had clearly realised the goldmine they had in the Minions, so they’ve got an expanded role here, which should please fans of their madcap mischief. One-time supervillain turned super dad Gru (voiced by Steve Carell, above) is back, and this time he’s fighting evil, not masterminding it. Every bit as enjoyable as the original.

What could go wrong when five comedians compete in an off-the-wall game show? Well, as it turns out, nothing. Everything goes spectacularly, hilariously well in Taskmaster. A huge success in Britain, the panel show panel boasting some very batty banter has since spawned offshoots in Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland and New Zealand. Hosted by Greg Davies (right) and Alex Horne, it’s the sort of show that can make Monday a joyous affair. Tonight, settle in for a raucous double episode. Fishing Club Supports Community By Marian SAMPSON

THE members of the Anna Bay Fishing Club have always supported their local community. Today the Fishing Club donated $9,000 to local community groups. Organisations funded included Port Stephens Koalas and Hunter Horse Haven. Kelly Hammond gratefully accepted a $1000 do-

nation towards Anna Bay All-abilities Play Park. She told News Of The Area, “The committee continues to strive for greater facilities in Anna Bay, including space that provides inclusive play and a Multipurpose court to replace the derelict & abandoned tennis courts in Anna Bay.” The committee for the All-abilities park hope to see a pump track on the site in the future as well as a

play area which they believe should encourage physical activity, social interaction, creativity and problem solving as well as contact and interaction with nature. They are active in supporting both physical health, mental health and inclusivity. The Anna Bay Tavern Fishing Club holds its fishing competition on the last Sunday of each month. All fish must be weighed in by 2.00pm at the Anna Bay Tavern Beer Garden, starting from 12.30pm.

Old Swan Bay Road WHEN is a road not a road? The Old Swan Bay Road is a road that many locals get frustrated about. The condition isn’t good but perhaps there is more to the situation than initially meets the eye. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area,

“Council maintains Old Swan Bay Road to the extent of the legal road reserve which ends approximately 110 metres west of the bridge. “There is no legal road reserve from this point through to Pond Road — the current track through land is not owned by Council or gazetted as road reserve.” So while locals use the track – in fact the track is just that and it is not a road. “However, we are advocat-

ing on behalf of the community and are in the process of ordering and installing signs to advise drivers that there is no through access ahead. “We hope this will alleviate some of the traffic issues in this area,” said Mayor Palmer. While the bridge by all reports has been in disrepair for some time Councillor Doohan has confirmed it is not a Council asset and therefore Council are not responsible for its repair.

LEMON Tree Passage was a stop-off point for solo circumnavigator Lindsay Warner on Sunday 27 June. The South Australian resident started his epic jet ski journey on April 1 this year from Albany WA and after crossing the Great Australian Bight he worked his way up the coast of Victoria and NSW. He covers around 400 kilometres per day, weather

permitting. High seas and the Covid lockdown in Victoria slowed his progress somewhat but he has had no mechanical problems at sea and tows a pontoon behind his craft carrying fuel tanks. Dorothea Willey from Tanilba Bay, who greeted her friend at the foreshore, said that Lindsay took all safety precautions which included a satellite phone and a beacon.

“We watch his progress via a satellite tracker,” she said. “We met him in outback WA when he was on a solo motorbike trek,” she added. “Lindsay spent the night ashore in Lemon Tree Passage before continuing on his epic Australian circumnavigation,” she remarked. “We wish him well,” she said.

Bay Players At State Championships By Marian SAMPSON NELSON Bay was well represented at the NSW State Hockey Championships. The Steggles U15 Girls State Hockey Championships were held in Lithgow over three days. Four Nelson Bay Hockey members played in the Hunter representative team. Despite the cold weather the Hunter team was very competitive and came away third in their pool. Nelson Bay Hockey Club members Emily Kabayama, Jordan Fischer, Tahlia Andrijic and Lily Payne all attended training at Maitland in the lead up to the carnival, and then played in five games over the three day carnival.

Roxy Gee Kay of Nelson Bay Hockey Club told News Of The Area, "The girls were really fortunate to have Peter Moore offer to coach them over the weekend, and also at four training sessions leading up to the event. “Peter is the U13s State girls squad coach, so it was really a wonderful opportunity for our girls to experience the talent of a high level coach." The girls had a great time getting to know the other Hunter players who joined the team from Maitland and Newcastle. For the Nelson Bay Hockey Club members representing the Hunter region it was a great learning experience as well as an opportunity to have a great time.

There are so many around that competition is fierce, the quality and range superb and deals are there to be done. Select trades wisely and only use qualified electricians and plumbers and ensure waterproofed areas – around baths, showers, toilets and vanity are professionally done. If you like your current tiles but not their colour, you can save lots of money simply by painting them with special tile paint. For the best result, and painted tiles can look fantastic, read – and follow – the instructions especially regarding priming! Alternatively, you’ll be surprised what a lift the simple act of changing grout colour gives a bathroom. Turn your bathroom dreams into your dream bathroom. I can’t wait to see the result!

THE Tomaree Family History Group are an eager group from the Port Stephens region who are researching their ancestors. With 36 keen members, the group has a committee meeting each month with a newsletter sent out to all, keeping everyone updated and informed about the proceedings. On Saturday 3 July 2021, the group will be holding a workshop at the Tomaree Library and Community Centre – Acacia Room. Marg Anderson, Secretary of the Tomaree Family History Group told News Of The Area, “The group has a Workshop on the first Saturday of each month, in the Tomaree Library and Community centre, with a guest speaker like in July we have Ruth Graham from the Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) in Sydney.

“As our research progresses we find more family members and sometimes reconnect with cousins we had lost touch with. “With guests like Ruth Graham we learn how to find more information; where to find it; and how to add this information to our family tree.” The Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) was formed in 1932 and Ruth Graham has been researching family histories for almost thirty years. SAG has one of the largest private genealogical and historical reference collections in the world, with records covering all of Australia and overseas (especially the UK and Ireland). The group invites anyone who is interested to join at 9:30am in the Tomaree Library and Community Centre, Acacia room to come along and hear from Ruth.

When I take my dog for a walk, she now rubs her body over the grass, no doubt spreading her pheromones to alert every mutt that there's a pedigree in town. It's hard work. Bear with me, Jenny, this is leading somewhere. When a male leaves his toiletry bag, it's a not-so-subtle sign that he's marking his territory (admittedly in a far more gracious way than a rabid hound.) Next, you'll find a pair of his shoes at the door, or a spare phone charger in the wall. Soon, he'll keep a carton of full-cream milk in the fridge because he doesn't like the way your almond milk tastes, and then, before you know it, you'll both be 27 with a kid on the way, and you'll wonder how it all stemmed from a rather innocent looking bag containing a toothbrush, some mouthwash, anti-fungal cream (what the?), tweezers, a shaving brush and some deodorant (at least he has reasonable hygiene -- don't even pretend you didn't have a sneaky look at the contents). Now, where you go from here is entirely up to you. If you aren't ready to move into this next phase, then you need to let him know he's accidentally left his bag behind. If you're more than happy for him to start taking over your personal space, one item at a time, until he's on the lease agreement, then just say nothing and enjoy the slow slide from independence to cohabitation. LAKES Trail Fest Postponed By Marian SAMPSON

TRAIL running is a big thing that has grown as a fitness outlet since COVID-19 hit and Australians seek new ways to exercise. Sadly, Australia’s newest off road ultra running event, the LAKES Trail Festival, which will see runners traversing the Myall Lakes region, has been postponed due to recently implemented Covid-19 restrictions. The Festival now hopes to be bringing trail running to the coast from October 29 to 31 2021. The event, which was meant to be held over the first weekend in July, will see runners descend on Hawks Nest to explore the region's tracks, trails and beaches. “Well we almost made it to the start line but COVID-19 had other ideas. “(With) Sydney now in lockdown until midnight Friday 2 July we have made the tough decision to postpone the LAKES Trail Festival.

Most of our runners and the event team are now restricted to Sydney and we do not believe it is right to leave it till the last minute to make a call,” said a statement on the LAKES Trail Festival Facebook page. and 5km course for those wanting a shorter trail experience. Solo runners can go for a quick run or go all day in the ultimate 100km. Teams of up to four can run the 100km course separated into 25km legs and finish together as a team. The race will start and finish in Hawks Nest taking runners along beaches, past

NELSON Bay Croquet Club moved to their present facility on Tomaree Sports Complex on 17 June 2008. Since then, the Club has marked this occasion with a Gala Day held every year on 17 June. The Gala Day returned in 2021 following a gap in 2020 due to COVID. Seventeen visitors and 35 members gathered at the courts for the celebration and were greeted by a brilliant clear and bright winter day. Visitors came from local croquet clubs Maitland, Mt Sugarloaf, Newcastle National Park and Toronto plus two members from the Canberra Croquet Club. The day started with morning tea which was followed by a series of games that tested mallet skills. The games included perennial
