LIONS often hear from community groups that are seeking support or simply to improve their profile in the community. The Raymond Terrace Lions Club recently heard from a representative from Friends with Dignity, an organisation which supports victims of domestic violence. Raymond Terrace has a very high prevalence of domestic violence with NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research reporting a surge of 59.6% in domestic

First week holiday fun

THE lead up to the first week of school holidays often creeps up far too quickly. There are plenty of free, or very affordable opportunities to optimise your last few days of the school term as well as the first week of school holidays. MarketPlace Raymond Terrace will be running a series of free colouring workshops from 10AM until 2PM each day from Tuesday 6 April until Friday 9 April. Colleen MulhollandRuiz, Centre Manager of MarketPlace said, “There’s no need for kids to be bored this school holiday.
“We have plenty of free school holiday events for everyone to attend. “We want to see kids getting creative and artistic these school holidays, we hope that our programs can facilitate this.” Tomaree Library and Community Centre will continue their coding series for children aged eight to twelve. Attendees will have the chance to use Raspberry Pi and Scratch to learn coding on 1 April from 4PM until 5PM as part of the Kid’s Crew program. The Raymond Terrace Library will be facilitating it’s final event of the Kid’s Crew program, with games and Lego at the library from 3:30PM to 4:30PM.

The easing of these restrictions allows many businesses that accommodate live entertainment to return to the live music venues many know and love. In the Port Stephens region, many businesses and venues have tried their
hardest to keep the live music sector of the industry thriving but it has been a challenging time. Tracey Aria, Secretary Manager of the Stockton Bowling Club told News Of The Area, “We have been supporting our local musicians as best we can, and it’s wonderful that they are now able to perform without restrictions. “To ask people not to dance has been extremely hard for my staff as a lot of patrons couldn’t understand why, so to say we are happy that dancing is back is an understatement.” Some venues have only existed in COVID-19 times, and have never actually gotten the opportunity for
patrons to fully experience live music. “We are really excited about the next lift in restrictions to allow dancing. “Medowie Social has only been here a short time, all of which has involved seating so we are incredibly excited to bring more music and more fun into town,” Charlie Way, General Manager of Medowie Social said. With the lift in restrictions, patrons are still encouraged to social distance as much as possible, but visitors are being encouraged to support the live music acts that will be performing at various clubs, pubs and venues around the Port Stephens’ region.

Darren James told News Of The Area, “We are in a rally to raise money for Country Hope who look after sick children and their families in times of need in the Riverina and surrounding areas.” The Riverina Redneck rally is their main fundraising effort each year. “We have raised over $30,000 dollars this year alone thanks to private sponsors and the Port Stephens community.” $12,835 was successfully raised at the third annual Country Hope Pig Races with the local Anna Bay Tavern Social Golf Club contributing $2,700, which came from the weekly meat raffles and the club’s winnings from the the last pig race. “To Belly and his mates, a big thank you from our team The Coasties,” Mr James said. The final tally shows the local crew have raised over $380,000 for Country Hope this year alone. That’s really stepping up and making change for those in need.

THE Port Stephens Libraries in Raymond Terrace and Tomaree will be facilitating many exciting activities these school holidays. On 7 April from 10:30AM until 12:30PM both libraries will have a range of retro video games and pizza for children aged five to twelve, with a gold coin donation for pizza. On 9 April at Tomaree Library from 10:30AM until 11:30AM, woodwork workshops will take place, where children can make their own toolbox, craft or gardening caddy with the Port Stephens Woodworkers for a cost of $10. Emma Holgate, Branch Librarian at Tomaree Library spoke to News Of The Area about the program.
“Libraries are community spaces where everyone is welcome and where lifelong learning is encouraged, they offer a wide variety of programs to encourage everyone to learn and grow. “Our school holiday activities are fun and exciting. “Not only will the kids learn new skills they will meet other children and they’ll get to take their creations home,” Emma Holgate said. The Libraries will continue their affordable school holiday fun during the second week of the school holidays as well. On 12 of April Raymond Terrace Library will have the free Youth Week program with retro console games, board games and pizza, for children aged twelve and over from 9AM until 5PM. On the same day at the Tomaree
ON Tuesday 23 March Police were called to an address in Lemon Tree Passage after three males entered the property armed with knives and a hammer.
The males left a short time later after assaulting the male occupant. A crime scene was established with investigations continuing.
POLICE were called to Bennetts Beach at Hawks Nest on Tuesday morning, in response to reports of a body found in the surf at the south end of the beach. The discovery was made just after 7.30am, by two women who were walking along the beach.
The body was first seen in shallow water about 500 metres south of the Surf Club. Tea Gardens Police were notified and quickly arrived on scene via four-wheel drive. Tea Gardens Police confirmed that the body was male. Investigations continue.

Education On ANZAC Day Free For All

SCHOOLS throughout Australia are about to gain valuable resources to help our children learn about the legacy of those who have served as ANZACs. New resources are being supplied free to educational institutions and include a range of different learning materials. These resources can also be accessed by members of the public. The addition of oral histories where students can learn about war from those who have served in their own words. The Department of Defence tells us that, “The resource will
help students to gain a deeper understanding of Australian military history through firsthand accounts.” Interviews in this series focus on veterans' views on ANZAC Day. The resources available include over 100 biographies. Port Stephens has a rich military history starting with colonialism and having played a vital role in the defence of Australia during WWII. Naval Ships were at anchor off Jimmys Beach, while Shoal Bay beach was the site of amphibious landings. Tomaree Headland is the site of gun emplacements with additional gun emplacements

Ruben’s plea for help

MEDOWIE is home to a special family that are in need of the community’s support. Ruben, who attends Wirreanda Public School, is a beautiful nine year old miracle boy, who surprised his family by arriving nine weeks early, and he is continuing to surprise them. Ruben was diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy just before the age of two. Due to damage to Ruben’s brain, the muscles in Ruben’s
legs are tight, causing him to walk up on his toes, which makes some everyday tasks difficult. Ruben’s mum, Lyndell Phillips, told News Of The Area, “Over the past few years we have been treating the spasticity in Ruben’s legs with botox injections and serial casting.” This relaxes the muscles and then stretches them through the casting. Yes, ladies and gents, botox has more uses than those that help stem the tide of age and it is used extensively for those suffering from cerebral palsy. “We get a small window where Ruben can walk with
his heels on the ground which improves his balance and gait - but it wears off quickly and we start all over again!” The family is applying for life changing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Surgery in Boston, United States. A neurosurgeon will separate the nerve roots into groups, finding those that bring sensation back from the legs and leaving the motor nerves aside. The operation releases tone in the muscles, initially this can expose underlying weakness that has been masked by the spasticity. Intensive rehabilitation is required post operation. Without this surgery, there is a chance that Ruben will decline as he gets older

Today we see the names of the ANZACS on the memorials in our towns, we see our returned service men and women standing tall on ANZAC Day. Knowing that we care is important, in 2020 with COVID-19 Australians came out in force and stood at their driveways to stand with our returned service men and women. Learning about the sacrifice those who serve make and what war means is an important lesson in nationalism for all Australians. ANZAC Day will be commemorated across the nation at memorials once again on 25 April. It is hoped that access to the new resources will engage our youth in the meaning of ANZAC Day and the sacrifice made by so many to secure the lives we live in this country today. Port Stephens FM honour long term friend By Doug CONNOR ON April 1 2021, Port Stephens FM will pay tribute to longterm listener Betty McTackett through the installation of a plaque on the door of the station’s Studio A. Prior to Betty’s passing in December 2020, she had a close to 20-year relationship with the station, first as a listener and regular caller, and later as a member and a firm friend to all. Port Stephens FM President Paddy Twohill, said he is proud to be able to honour Betty’s memory in this way. He recalls fondly the friendship he and many of his colleagues enjoyed with the delightful Betty over the years. “We first connected in the early 2000’s, when she found out about our station, and thought ‘you beauty, I like listening to them’.” “She would ring the presenters up every day, not only to talk to but to have a real conversation as she was a great listener as well. “I think all of the presenters found her very engaging,” Paddy said. Aside from her penchant for a chat, Betty had an insatiable passion for music.
“She loved music very, very deeply, she was a real music lover,” Paddy said. “Music was her connection to the world and she saw music as a gift from heaven.” Over the years, the station's presenters benefited from Betty’s kindness, compassion and her sense of humour. At Betty’s funeral it was said that when Betty was around seven years old, she took great delight in giving supplies and water to soldiers stationed on her property during WW2. Through her interactions with the station, it is clear this caring quality continued throughout her life. “She would ask you things about your life, and about your

family,” said Paddy. “She would remember if you had been low the previous week, and check if you were feeling better. “She really cared for everyone,” he said. The plaque, which will
be hung on April 1 to mark the 28tth anniversary of the station, reads, ‘This studio is dedicated to the memory of Betty McTackett. Music lover, avid listener, dedicated supporter and friend to all of us here at Port Stephens FM.
Music comes from heaven.’ The plaque will be set on a pink background, as a tribute to the colour of her hair that Betty, as a hairdresser by trade, wore until her passing at 86 years old.

Officers receive Australian Bravery Decorations for actions in Port Stephens
ON Wednesday, Sergeant Hogg, Senior Constable Gray, and Senior Constable Leach of the NSW Police Force were awarded Australian Bravery Decorations by the GovernorGeneral. Sergeant Hogg, Senior Constable Gray, and Senior Constable Leach received the Bravery Medal following the rescue of race yacht crews in treacherous seas off the coast of Port Stephens on Wednesday 6 January 2016. A total of 24 officers received decorations on the day. Six police officers received the Bravery Medal and a further 16 received a Commendation for Brave Conduct after they displayed
courageous efforts in the face of fires, dangerous boating and vehicle incidents, and flood waters. NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller APM, said he was proud to see so many officers recognised for their selfless and courageous actions. “The reality is that police face many dangerous scenarios every shift they work, and they will do everything they can to protect the lives of the people of NSW. “In the face of extreme challenges, these officers displayed bravery and are worthy recipients of the awards and commendations today,” Commissioner Fuller said. The Governor-General,
His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) awarded a total of 111 Australians with bravery decorations, including the 24 NSW Police Force officers. The Australian Bravery Decorations recognise courage and service to the community. Two Australian Bravery lists are announced every year. The independent Australian Bravery Decorations Council makes recommendations to the Governor-General regarding who should be recognised and at what level of award. Climate Change Increases Flood Events By Marian SAMPSON
FLOOD DISASTERS, such as those currently unfolding in New South Wales and parts of Southern Queensland, are made more likely by climate change, say experts from the Climate Council. “The intense rainfall and
floods that have devastated NSW communities are taking place in an atmosphere made warmer and wetter by climate change, which is driven by the burning of coal, oil, and gas,” said Climate Council spokesperson Professor Will Steffen. “For many communities
dealing with floods right now, this is the latest in a line of climate change-exacerbated extreme weather events they have faced, including drought, the Black Summer bushfires, and scorching heatwaves,” he added. Global temperatures have risen 1.1°C since pre-
industrial levels, and this has led to a 7 percent increase in water vapour in the a t m o s p h e re — i n c re a s i n g the likelihood of extreme downpours. “Climate change is harming the health, safety, and livelihoods of Australians, racking up billions of dollars

in economic losses, and damaging many of our unique ecosystems. “It’s time for all levels of government and businesses to step up their climate action efforts to protect people, our environment and the economy,” said Professor Steffen. “We must take decisive action this decade to bring climate change under control. “Australia must get to net zero emissions well before 2040, and accelerate efforts to shift away from coal and gas to a fully renewables-powered economy,” he said. Former Emergency Services Chiefs have also warned that climate change is worsening extreme rainfall and flood events such as the current situation in NSW and QLD, putting immense pressure on emergency response services and communities. “In my 40-year career I have never seen rainfall and flooding as widespread as the events occurring across much of NSW and QLD,” said Jim Smith, former acting Commissioner, NSW State Emergency Services and Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) member. “Climate change is
increasing the intensity and severity of extreme rainfall and flood events, and we are seeing the devastating consequences of this on people’s safety, homes, and livelihoods,” he said. “It has long been the norm for states to help each other by sending personnel and resources across borders during emergencies, but the simultaneous extreme flooding in NSW and QLD shows how climate change threatens this practice,” said Mr Smith. Major General (Retd) Peter Dunn, former Commissioner, ACT Emergency Services Authority, added, “The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements outlined 80 recommendations to improve Australia’s disaster response and preparedness, but the Federal Government has shown resistance at fully accepting and implementing all 80 of the recommendations. “Australians are on the frontline of back-to-back extreme weather events fuelled by climate change, and cannot afford the growing costs of inaction,” said Mr Dunn. Free land titling for property owners affected by flooding Raym ond Terrace
NSW Land Registry Services (NSW LRS) will make title searches, replacement Certificates of Title and plan images free for property owners affected by flooding in NSW. Property searches and plans can assist landholders with insurance claims and development applications to council, as well as provide peace of mind regarding land ownership in the aftermath of natural disasters. Adam Bennett, NSW Land Registry Services CEO, said having fast and free access to land titles could help bring peace of mind to affected
property owners when the clean-up starts. “We are seeing widespread flood damage to properties across NSW, our team are here to help property owners to access their lost or damaged land titles for free. “NSW Land Registry Services encourage affected landowners to contact our team so we can do what we can to provide titling support as they start to rebuild their lives, homes and properties.” This support will be provided direct by NSW LRS when property owners contact our team on 1300 396 076 (regional callers) or (02) 8776

Rainfall disaster response recognised ON Tuesday March 23, Port Stephens Council tonight moved an urgent motion to acknowledge the ongoing severe weather event affecting NSW, which has been declared a natural disaster for the region. Mayor Ryan Palmer expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the emergency response. “We received a record rainfall across Port Stephens since late last week and the impacts on our roads and across our community are significant. “On behalf of all councillors and the whole community, I want to thank our wonderful staff for all their hard work across the week. “They’ve worked day and night to ensure the safety of our locals by getting our roads and infrastructure up to the best standards despite the conditions.” Mayor Palmer also recognised all the other agencies involved. “Congratulations and sincerest thanks to our incredible emergency services, especially the SES, and all the

Mambo Culvert Concerns By Marian SAMPSON
FORESHORE Drive has become the focal point of the storm damage in Port Stephens, with images of the washed out culvert appearing on capital city television news. EcoNetwork Port Stephens, a communitybased environmental and sustainability network, have called for a thorough review of Foreshore Drive’s infrastructure and adjoining wetlands. “Such a review is critical to ensuring that wetlands’ long-term health, as well as public safety, are not further compromised by future impacts,” said EcoNetwork President Iain Watt. Mr Watt believes a review will show how the poor ecological state of the Mambo Wetlands and adjoining mangroves can be restored to health.
“The study must include extensive community consultation,” he said. It is understood that Council has already prepared an environmental impact statement for the replacement of the culvert. “In 2019 Port Stephens Councillors unanimously voted to replace the culvert and install speed humps, signage and a bicycle pathway. “Foreshore Drive was closed to traffic for several months during construction, yet no work was done to improve the culvert, the most dangerous part of Foreshore Drive. “So, of course with the first serious weather event – a super storm cell – the culvert has been completely destroyed.” Mr Watt said that a number of alternative solutions are available. “Whether or not the road
is restored, there are sound ecological solutions that can be applied to improve management of the area and reduce flooding in the residential areas. “For example, several drainage points between the Mambo wetland and the mangrove/open sea areas could be opened, thereby better linking the wetland with the estuary (and Port Stephens Great Lakes sanctuary zone), with reduced risk of flooding. “It should be remembered this is very low-lying ground and will always be subject to inundation. “This will also allow clean water to reach and drain the inland area of the wetland, which will help clear blocked internal drainage systems and lead to improved wetland health.” Mr Watt said improving the health of the wetlands will reduce flood risk in the area.

PANTRY PEEKERS “I saw your recent Instagram post where you suggested that a tidy pantry is essential when selling because buyers peek in pantries! Is that really a ‘thing’?” FIRSTLY, thanks for checking in to randrproperty on Instagram! I hope you’re enjoying keeping up with our listings, sales and community activities. And yes, pantry peeking is definitely a ‘thing’. While keeping your entire home clean and tidy throughout the sales period is essential, often forgotten is what lies behind cupboard doors and buyers will look, generally to see how the space is configured – but also to sticky beak. It is regularly said that kitchens sell homes; storage being a key component, so clean, organized cupboards including the pantry – the heart of every meal – creates a sense of space and calm. Messy packets spilling and bottles oozing onto shelves not only creates a sense of chaos they are also a foundation for mice and rats. Opening a cupboard door to be greeted by chaos and worse - mouse droppings - is a major turn off for buyers. Pantries don’t have to be filled with expensive products, it’s not about status, it’s about care for a home a vendor is seeking to sell. The streams of vehicles that are continually approaching the roundabout from all directions will eventually result in collisions. NBCC start State Pennants SPORT with a win THE 2021 State Pennants season started for the Nelson Bay Croquet Club on Sunday 28 March with Team Birubi hosting EDSACC White in a Division 3 match at Tomaree Sports Complex. Rae Black, Sherry Gordon, Kay Smith and Rae Uptin did the Club proud with a close fought 2-1 win. All 3 matches went to 3 games and 2 were decided on the 13th hoop. Miss Wendy P. Dear Miss Wendy, I am having trouble imagining a Miss Wendy saying anything offensive. The name reminds me of that lovely lady from Romper Room, although I think that was Miss Kim. We shouldn't let names confuse us, however. I do believe Miss Kim swore like a trooper and chain smoked once the cameras stopped rolling. I mean, who wouldn't after years of trying to get kids to balance bags of rice on their heads or having to listen to that repulsive milk slurping noise when they had their refreshments. Holy sugar. Back to your question. I think, like most things, swear words in moderation can be used to great effect. There are some situations where a well-placed swear word is absolutely necessary to get the intended meaning across. If you were snorkelling at Fly Point and a dark shadow approached that had a distinctive shark shape, you possibly wouldn't be saying 'oh darn', into your snorkel. This would sound like 'glop dlop' to the shark anyway, due to the effect of speaking through a tube underwater. Instead, what he'd more likely hear would be 'hoblo flug, whobla flugging hlop.' He wouldn't understand that either, so you'd probably still get eaten, but at least you'd feel the momentary release that well-placed swearing offers. On the other hand, people who feel the need to litter every sentence with swear words are just lazy and disingenuous. Some songs and movies would only be half their current length if they took out all the expletives. These words become so commonplace that they no longer have any impact. It's a bit like tattoos. A few strategic, meaningful ones are interesting, but when entire bodies are tattooed there is no delineation and therefore no impact. So, is the word bullsh-t offensive? Medowie couple take on World’s Greatest Shave By Doug CONNOR
10 YEARS ago, Medowie resident Ann Byron shaved her head in support of the Leukaemia Foundation, after a student at the school she worked at passed away from blood cancer. This year she is at it again, taking on her second World’s Greatest Shave, this time inspired by her own family. “I shaved my head ten years ago because I lost one of my students, and I was working at the school at the time. “Now I have a cousin whose son has been diagnosed with Leukaemia, and I thought it was about time I did it again,” Ann said. 47 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer every single day. Funds raised through
World’s Greatest Shave help families facing blood cancer meet costs like putting food on the table, covering rent or paying bills. After a few short weeks of fundraising, Ann has raised $2,650.80 of her $3000 goal. “I have just been asking people for donations, and when I had my head shaved I had some friends around to watch.” Ann states on her fundraising page, “Please sponsor me to give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need. “You'll also fund vital research to help more people survive blood cancers, while improving their quality of life.” On the day of the shave, Ann’s fundraising efforts were given a boost when guests at her home suggested they would donate more if Ann’s husband Patrick were to undergo the razor as well.
With the shave completed on Sunday March 14 by Michelle from Sylvan Hair Boutique, the married couple enter the colder months of Autumn with a little less

PORT Stephens has a very active VIEW Club. These active women work to support the Voice, Interests and Education of Women. Locally that means that the group sponsors girls in Australia to have better educational outcomes. VIEW Clubs of Australia (VIEW) is delighted to announce Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley as the organisation’s first ever Patron. As a passionate advocate for children’s education, and with close ties to communities across Australia as the wife of the Governor-General, Mrs Hurley is the perfect fit to represent the organisation. She joins 15,000 members who give tirelessly in their local communities to support young Australians in need. VIEW, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020, is a national women's volunteer organisation. Rotary Centenary Project Closing The Gap By Marian SAMPSON
THIS year Rotary is celebrating its centenary. Rotary clubs throughout Australia will not only be celebrating this milestone but will exercise the opportunity to further contribute to their communities and provide help to those in need. Helen Ryan past District Governor of Rotary told News Of The Area, “Here in the Bay the Rotary clubs of Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay will be acknowledging the centenary by partnering with the Port Stephens Council to supply one hundred trees to be planted by local Public-School children around the Tom Dyer Oval in Nelson Bay. “In addition, the clubs will be holding a fund-raising raffle the proceeds of which through Rotary Australia will
go to the Australian Trachoma Alliance which is a network of organizations including the World Health Organization, Australian Governments, and Indigenous authorities in their endeavour to specifically eliminate Trachoma here in Australia.” Trachoma is a serious eye infection which is spread by personal contact (hands, towels and clothes) and if not treated can lead to permanent blindness. Australia is the only developed nation in the world that has trachoma. Addressing Trachoma is an important initiative which will also address closing the gap for Indigenous Australians. Throughout Australia the infection is identified as prevalent in a number of remote Aboriginal communities.
It is Rotary Australia’s objective to supply individual hygiene kits and education to affected regions throughout Australia so as to completely eliminate the disease. To raise funds to assemble the health and hygiene kits Rotary are holding a raffle in the Salamander Centre over four consecutive days (29 March – 1 April). The raffle will consist of a wheelbarrow full of goods and services supplied by a large number of local businesses with the value of the one only prize is now expected to exceed $2000.00. “Rotary wishes to sincerely thank the local business houses for their generosity, and at the same time invite the Tomaree community to help Rotary help others by buying a ticket or two in the Trachoma Raffle, which will be drawn on

Yes, even after a deluge we know that Australia will eventually be faced with drought once more and every drop saved today is a drop in the bucket of a sustainable future. Learning lessons around sustainability and saving water can be somewhat dull however Hunter Water have developed a series of colourful workshops for schools and kindergartens. Kids can enjoy popping balloons and bopping along to catchy tunes in a fun, colourful and interactive way, spreading the value of water to schools across the region. The ‘Let’s Love Water’ program, which is being coordinated by Hunter Water in partnership with local talent group Jollybops Science for the first time, highlights simple ways to save the precious resource

The ‘Let’s Love Water’ show includes simple tips like having four-minute showers, turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, and sweeping hard surfaces. It comes after a successful 15-year partnership between Hunter Water and Ship ‘O Fools, the creative agency that brought a ‘Bubbles and Supa Squirt’ production to thousands of Lower Hunter school students. Hunter Water Education Coordinator, Jessica Crow, thanked Ship ‘O Fools for its dedication over the years while expressing excitement at a fresh approach. “We encourage any Lower Hunter schools that may be interested in featuring this free show to contact us,” said Ms Crow. RAYMOND Terrace Athletics Centre athlete Cody Hancock has taken out an U/17s National Title in decathlon at the Australian Junior Combined Events competition in Melbourne. Over ten events in two days, Cody achieved six 1st places, two 2nd places and one 3rd placing in the final event, the 1500m. At the end of Day 1 of competition, after five events, he was leading by just over 800 points. At the start of the last event, the 1500m, he was ahead by 1050 points. He finished that event in 3rd place, but had enough points to ensure a Gold medal. Cody was the only NSW Athlete from the NSW Combined Event, where he placed 2nd outright, to compete at the
