From feeding the SES or the RFS when the chips are down, to supplying groceries for the needy or delivering local primary schools with a BBQ, the Lions Club of Soldiers Point are there. Soldiers Point Lions Club applied for a grant under Stronger Communities Grant Program and were successful for the amount of $3800.

Brooke told News Of The Area, “The most common reason that women in general end up homeless is escaping a domestic violence situation or family law proceedings.” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin told News Of The Area, “The NSW Government works to provide social housing to eligible applicants as quickly as possible, prioritising those most in need, including people who are homelessness, escaping domestic violence or with severe and ongoing medical conditions. “The $1.1 billion Social and Affordable Housing Fund is delivering 3,400 new homes across NSW, including hundreds in the Hunter and Central Coast. “There is also a range of housing assistance products available including help for people to rent in the private market. “Support is available to help people pay rent, cover rental bonds and to sustain tenancies. “One such program is Rent

However, this again isn’t ideal as Kirsty is driving 1hr and 30 mins to drive her children to school as she is trying to keep a routine for the children. “All the kids just want a roof over their heads, my eldest boy is turning thirteen on 16 June and all he wants is a roof over his head so we can at least have a party with his new friends.”

Shorebirds Need Seaweed By Marian SAMPSON

WE often witness seaweed washed up on our beaches, with the sight and smell leaving something to be desired. However there is new research that is calling for us to conserve coastal seaweed. University of South Australia (UniSA) ecologists are urging coastal communities to embrace all that the season brings, including the sometimes-unwelcome deposits of brown seaweed that can accumulate on the shoreline. Both Port Stephens and the Myall Coast are home to a

range of shore birds. While tidal seaweed (or sea wrack) may seem

Parklets Removed

By Tara CAMPBELL IN March 2021 a series of parklets were placed in Shoal Bay. These parklets are pathway extensions that convert part of the road into community spaces with more seating for local businesses; however, local residents voiced their opinions rather quickly about these extensions.

In the UniSA study, researchers show that beachcast seaweed provides shelter, and a range of microclimates, in addition to food, that ensure the survival of many shore-bird species. Specifically, sea wrack acts like a reverse-cycle air conditioner creating cooler conditions when the weather is hot and warmer

With over 1,000 signatures by locals asking for the parklets to be removed, Councillor Giacomo Arnott put forth a motion for the removal of Shoal Bay’s parklets by the end of June 2021. Although the motion was supported, Cr Giacomo Arnott voiced not only his own, but the community’s frustrations about the extensions. “It’s disappointing that Council has taken three months to finally listen to the community.

“The trial of these parklets failed very early on, and decisive action needed to be taken months ago,” he told News Of The Area “I’m glad that my motion has been supported,” he continued. “Businesses and locals have suffered while Council dithered and discussed.” Leah Anderson from Business Port Stephens was a leading advocate for the cause, working closely with Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay locals to get this outcome. Ms Anderson believes the parklets impacted local

conditions when it is cold, helping sea birds regulate their body temperatures. UniSA researchers Tim Davis and Associate Professor Gunnar Keppel say that councils, residents and tourists must be educated about the ecological role of sea wrack and how removing it from beaches can have a significant impact on the environment and the survival of bird species. “Australian beaches are renowned for stretches of golden sand – it’s one of the main draw cards for tourists – so it’s not altogether surprising that beachside destinations tend to favour a seaweed-free coastline,” Davis said. “The challenge is, however, that while people may see

Women shot dead in Stockton By Tara CAMPBELL

STOCKTON residents were shocked and heartbroken after a beloved local was shot dead on Wednesday 9 June after answering their front door. Stacey Klimovitch, a 61-year-old resident was shot in the chest after answering her front door in her Queen Street Home in Stockton.

She unfortunately died at the scene. Police were called to the scene at approximately 8pm on Wednesday night after reports of gunshots. Stacey’s 31-year-old daughter and eight-week-old grandchild were in the home at the time but did not see the shooter. Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey believes that the attack was targeted but for a reason that remains unknown. “It’s horrendous, an innocent

person who answered the front door of her home was shot in the chest and killed in the presence of a relative and child,” he told reporters. “It doesn’t get any worse.” Klimovitch was a loving mother and local swimming coach involved in the support of local support in the Newcastle area for over 25 years, with Stacey teaching most of Stockton how to swim. Local police are reassuring the Stockton community that the likelihood of a recurrence of this

Dine and Discover extended

NSW Government’s Dine and Discover scheme will be extended for a month. This decision was made after learning that almost half the vouchers had not been utilised just weeks before they were due to expire. More businesses will now be able to register, and NSW residents will have more time to apply for vouchers and get out and about. The Dine and Discover is an initiative for NSW residents

Berejiklian describes the initiative as a win-win for all. “For too long because of Covid, we haven't been able to support these businesses, so it's a win for citizens and a win for businesses as it boosts their ability to receive people again as we move through Covid,” Ms Berejiklian said. Cooking Up A Storm

MEMBERS of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre have been cooking up a storm. The storm that went through Port Stephens in March this year caused extensive damage to the kitchen at Port Stephens Community Arts Centre. The members of the centre have recently revamped the kitchen with new flooring, dishwasher, air conditioner and painting. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Madeleine Quinlan who runs a team of café volunteers is delighted with the improvements to the kitchen.

THE relentless flood of holidaymakers and those seeking a better lifestyle continues with real estate agents run off their feet dealing with prospective buyers. One waterfront home at Tanilba Bay sold recently for $1.7 million. That number may be nothing exceptional by city standards, but the property had 20 000 'views' on online real estate sites. The Sights They See OYSTERING is one of those jobs you can hate at times but on the other hand, when conditions are perfect, there is simply nothing better. With orders to fill, going out in the frigid wintry weather is not much fun but a warm clear autumnal day

“At other times we see sights which can be distressing,” he said. Paul speaks about the time he came upon a dead sea turtle snared in a crab trap,” he added. “It wasn't in one of the now banned witches hats.

“It had apparently tried to get the bait out of a double hooped trap, become stuck and died. “As it bloated it floated to the surface,” he stated. Paul said remaining vigilant is key. “We really have to keep our eyes wide open as some amateur crabbers have clear plastic bottles as floats.

“They are hard to see and can become entangled in propellers and if the rope is cut, the trap can catch many fish which in turn die and become bait for others. “It just goes on and on,” he suggested. Paul is optimistic for the future of oyster farming locally. “Currently the oyster industry is going very well with

supply problems caused by the floods forcing prices up. “Prime Port Stephens oysters are plentiful and are in high demand,” he remarked. “Barnacle overgrowth is a bit of a problem at the moment as conditions favour them, but overall we are quite optimistic for the industry,” he concluded.

WHILE residents struggle to understand why there are changes to dog on-lead and offlead areas for Boat Harbour, Port Stephens Council has cited environmental issues alongside amenity to the headland. It has become a contentious issue which is causing considerable stress to some dog owners. Nearly 50% of households in Australia now have a dog. Brock Lamont, Community and Recreation Coordinator, Port Stephens Council has advised, “Council along with State Government agencies collect data on threatened fauna and flora sightings. “The Boat Harbour southern headland and the surrounding area contains a number of these sightings associated with the White Bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus

IT’S been long awaited and motorists will win in the long run. The link that lets us down daily on our roads between the M1 to Raymond Terrace is close to an upgrade that will deliver the missing link. The game-changing extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway to Raymond Terrace is a step closer following early talks with the construction industry. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project would deliver improved highway connections and more reliable travel times, as well as support 2,700 jobs over its life cycle.

“The Australian Government has committed $1.6 billion and the New South Wales Government $400 million to deliver both the M1 to Raymond Terrace and Hexham Straight projects, continuing our transformation of journeys between Sydney

and the Queensland border,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. “We have already crossed the finish line on the $15 billion Pacific Highway upgrade, duplicating the 657-kilometre stretch between Hexham and the Queensland border. “Work is also

Citizen Scientists Counting Kangaroos At Nelson Bay Golf Course q

NELSON Bay Golf Club is renowned for the great 27 hole course and for some of its resident kangaroos. In fact the course and its resident kangaroo population are part of a university study. The study involves citizen scientists in population counts, and until COVID-19 hit, included regular tours for tourists run by volunteers. The program is headed up by Phil Murray who is known locally as ‘Kangaroo Phil’. Kangaroo Phil told News Of The Area, “In terms of the tourism aspect we have been closed since March last year due to COVID.” The Kangaroo Tours cater to tourists from everywhere,

international and domestic. With the tours generally operated by volunteers who are older, the program closed as the tour guides fell into a high risk group for COVID-19. Since the tours began there have been over 1000 tours that have raised over $70,000. The volunteers conduct a kangaroo count every three months. In 2012, there were 220 eastern grey kangaroos on the course. That population now sits at 40. Kangaroo Phil isn’t concerned with the drop in numbers, “It’s a dynamic population which moves in and out of the National Park.” These kangaroos are

living in a peri-urban environment. Just like our koala population, road trauma is one of the biggests risks for our kangaroos. Kangaroo Phil has appealed to Council for kangaroo signage to be installed up and down Dowling St, as the mob often crosses at the crest where unfortunately this is also the most dangerous stretch of road adjacent to the golf course. Most don’t know it but there is a freezer on the golf course where any kangaroos who have died on the road or course are stored and are later analysed under autopsy by the university. Kangaroos live in a

Indigenous Youth Program By Tara CAMPBELL

ON 10 June, selected youth from the Port StephensHunter Police Indigenous Program were lucky enough to visit Taronga Zoo in Sydney for the day. This trip was a reward for the ongoing excellent behaviour displayed by these

members and they were granted the opportunity to be involved in various activities, behind-the-scenes tasks as well as a general visit to the zoo. The Port Stephens-Hunter Police have been running the program for the last five weeks, and next week will be the final week of the course,

however this will not mark their final contact with the mentors in the program. Maddie Wade is a proud Aboriginal mentor for the program and explained how local police will provide ongoing support for the youth. “For the next twelve months we will be here as a mentor for the kids on the program, we’re their port of call if they need any assistance or guidance,” Maddie said. The program currently has two girls and six boys involved and over the last five weeks

THE arctic blast has seen a change in setting for the Probus Club of Fingal Bay as they have warmed up together at some indoor gatherings. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club have enjoyed recent get-togethers that proves that the fun and friendship that they enjoy can bring a great warmth to shivery winter days.” Daryl Chalker hosted a delightful morning tea when the “bring a plate” instruction proved that those attending had

been happily at work in their kitchen. The members went all out making savoury sandwiches and creamy cakes which were among the treats to be relished. “The cheerful conversation about future plans and past events added to the pleasure of the day.” When Probus Club Member Jenny Wright asked everyone to her home for the monthly wine appreciation afternoon, the enjoyment levels were the same. “Roy Jeffery supplied the reds and whites for consideration, and Bob Mitchell added two more.

Port’s Harmonious Singers By Marian SAMPSON

SINGING and immersing ourselves in music is something that is universal to the human race. Port Stephens community choir Port Harmony is delighted to report that they are back in the swing of things! That means these talented singers are tackling new choral scores and developing their repertoire and they have a new Musical Director. Joanna Davies, President of Port Harmony told News Of The Area, “Importantly, we would like to introduce you to our new Musical Director whom we are thrilled has joined us.” Dr Chris Hawkins is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

She has an impressive background, having majored in string playing, composition and conducting. She also has a Masters Degree and two Doctorates. Chris began her career in the National Youth Orchestra at the age of 12, winning a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the age of 18. By the age of 19, Chris had become a well-known conductor, helping to form and conduct new youth orchestras in Sydney. She has played the pipe organ for several churches and directed their choirs. Chris taught for 40 years in schools for NSW Education Department and was responsible for the professional development of

music teachers across NSW. She has also played violin and viola in many professional orchestras and chamber groups and founded a professional string quartet which performed successfully for 10 years. She has written many published vocal works. In 2010, as a conductor, Chris founded a community orchestra which was invited to perform at the Premiers' Concert in Darling Harbour for the FIFA Fan Fest. In 2012, Chris travelled with some opera singers, the NBSO orchestra and combined with a variety of choirs from rural NSW where she conducted a variety of operatic performances at the Prince of Wales Opera House in Gulgong. Her career has been vast

Home Invasion

THREE people have been charged over an alleged home invasion at a Raymond Terrace home. About 3.40am on Saturday 12 June 2021, emergency services were called to a home on Gwen Parade Raymond Terrace, after reports four people had forced entry to the home. Police will allege three men and a woman threw a concrete object into the window of the house and smashed the windows of a car parked in the driveway. The group then allegedly forced entry to the house when they became involved in a physical altercation with the occupant, a 51-year-old man, before the group left the location. Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene. Following inquiries, police arrested four people – two men aged 35, a 30-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman - at a home on Green Slopes Drive, Raymond Terrace a short time later. They were taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where one of men, aged 35, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a cut to his arm before being transferred to the John Hunter Hospital under police guard, where he remains in a stable condition. The other three were all charged with aggravated enter dwelling with intent to inflict actual bodily harm, two counts of destroy or damage property, and common assault. The older man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday 13 June 2021. The younger man and woman were granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 5 July 2021.

COMMUNICATION is vital, especially during natural disaster incidents. For Port Stephens there is an ongoing collaboration of agencies where Marine Rescue assists the Rural Fire Service with radio communications playing a major role during bushfire events. The Public Safety Network (PSN) in the Hunter has been expanded with the completion of a new site at Raymond Terrace. The network is designed to help keep people and communities safe. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the new radio site, delivered by the NSW Telco Authority, is vital to ongoing community safety across the Hunter. “These sites provide emergency services organisations with a single, integrated network on which to

place as a keyboard player in the show. Alex was involved in the orchestra in 2018 and 2019 and was supposed to be a member in 2020 before the show was cancelled due to COVID-19. THIS morning in the supermarket I challenged a fellow shopper on her choice of selecting caged eggs over free range. I felt some remorse afterwards as I normally mind my own business and don’t like to be rude to people, however on the other hand I feel torn as I find the cruelty these poor chickens have to endure just to save a few cents at the checkout is worth calling someone out on their choice. If we all stay silent on these cruelty issues they will continue. Was I overstepping the mark? How do you see it? Dear Liz, HAVE you seen that advertisement on television where the little pig sings 'Somewhere' from West Side Story before it flies out of its factory farm? I tell you, that ad absolutely kills me. It brings me to tears. It is so well executed (terrible word choice) that for a moment I can imagine a world where there is no animal cruelty. Yeah, and pigs might fly, some will say. Well, in this ad, they do. It is abhorrent that supermarkets still stock eggs from caged chickens. Offering them at a cheaper rate than freerange is negligent. I agree with you that staying silent on cruelty issues will mean they continue. Perhaps the answer is to approach the supermarket's manager and ask why they are still providing an option that supports inhumane practices. Having owned chickens, I know that they each have individual personalities. They deserve room to move, a place to have dust baths, sunlight, and the ability to stretch their wings. I wonder if the caged-egg cartons had pictures of baby chickens with part of their beaks removed so they don't peck each other to death from stress, or living a life in cramped and dark conditions over a manure pit, those sunny-sideup eggs would taste as good? Education is the place to start, so no, not only were you not overstepping the mark, but you were also giving a voice to the voiceless. FERN Bay’s Michael Hoysted took top spot on the dais at the Volkswagen NSW Surfmasters Titles last weekend. The Volkswagen NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby’s Beachside Retreat got off to a flying start with four new state champions crowned after a long day of surfing in playful two-foot surf. Perennial Surfmasters standout Rod Baldwin of Copacabana added another title to his mantlepiece, taking out the Over-60 Men’s division. Port Stephens was well represented with Michael Hoysted of Fern Bay managing to steal Baldwin’s hopes of a second 2021 event title as he posted a decent 5.7 wave score in the final 30 seconds of the Over-55 Men’s final for an array of searing turns. The last-minute heroics saw Hoysted leap-frog Baldwin and

earn the top spot on the dais. The event celebrates both men’s and women’s surfing. Belinda Koorey of Manly Vale nabbed herself a victory over multiple time NSW and Australian Champion Sandra English in the Over-50 Women's division. Koorey shone in the dual heats and in turn cemented herself a spot in the upcoming Australian Surf Championships. The prominent four-day event saw over 150 competitors aged 35 and above battle it out in an attempt to secure an NSW shortboard title and a spot in the national titles at the 2021 Australian Surf Championships. A range of former World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour surfers and Australian Champions will compete in the event including Shane Wehner of Broulee, Rod Baldwin of Copacabana and Mel Bartz of Pacific Palms. 2021 is the tenth year running the NSW Surfmasters Titles, presented by Moby’s Beachside Retreat, has been held in the Great Lakes region. Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens has some great surfers in all age groups and we are looking forward to seeing more of their talented performances in the future.”
