MEDOWIE’S Boyd Oval will soon be home to a new $1.4 million amenities building that will better cater for rugby union and touch football teams, with works kicking off last week. Port Stephens Council has allocated funds from developer contributions for the project and received funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program. At a groundbreaking ceremony last Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Ryan Palmer said the new facility will be an asset to the community. “To say this new facility will be an improvement is an understatement. “It will feature accessible amenities, change rooms, canteen, referee rooms and a

By Tara CAMPBELL RAYMOND Terrace Library is now home to the region’s first ‘Share The Dignity’ vending machine. These machines allow for the dispense of sanitary items and period packs to reduce period poverty for those in need in the community. Located in the library, the machine dispenses packs of six tampons and two pads to allow everyone fair access to these items. Share the Dignity is a national charity working to end period poverty in Australia and is responsible for these machines. Tracy Wickham, Corporate Relations Manager of Share The Dignity told News Of The Area, “At Share the Dignity we believe that access to period products is a right, not a privilege and that no woman or girl should ever have to choose between eating and living with dignity. “Our Dignity Vending Machines allow those in need access to pads and tampons so that they can manage their period with the dignity

THE Committee that is working to bring the All Abilities Park to Anna Bay are seeking a name for the facility and calling for nominations. Kelly Hammond who sits on the Committee told News Of The Area, “The ability to play and take part in outdoor recreation is an important contributor to our physical and mental health, as well as our sense of well-being. “Anna Bay All-Abilities Recreational Play Park is trying to create a space allowing the community to meet, play, chat and connect,” she said. The Committee is handing over to the community for engagement on what to call the park which they hope will be a destination for families year round as they enjoy the environment of Port Stephens.

Port Stephens SES Team Wins at Inaugural NSW State Road Crash Championships q Road Crash Team at work during the championships.

By Marian SAMPSON RECENTLY an amazing team of Road Crash Rescue Operators from Port Stephens NSW SES and NSW Ambulance Rescue competed in the inaugural NSW State Road Crash Rescue Championships in Mogo, on the south coast. The combined team was successful in winning 7 of the 9 awards. Alysha Springett Deputy Unit Commander & Training and Coordinator of the Port Stephens SES Unit told News Of The Area, “It’s safe to say, our ongoing training, continuous improvement and

volunteers commitment have meant that the Port Stephens and Lower Hunter communities are in good hands.” The team took out the win in these categories: Trauma challenge winner; CPR challenge winner; Entrapped Rescue winner; Controlled Rescue winner; Best Medical Team winner; Best Technical Team winner; and Overall SES winner. The Hawkesbury Team took out the Best Team Leader category and the Eden Team took out the win in the Spirit Of The Challenge. The Port Stephens SES is the State Rescue Board accredited General Land Rescue unit for our area.

Mr Fitzsimmons Cleared Of Charges After Trip In Paddy-Wagon By Marian SAMPSON

MR Fitzsimmmons the newly rescued and named koala arrived at the Port Stephens Koala Hospital in a rather unusual way. The koala was found by two Police Officers on Bagnalls Beach Road. Despite their best efforts to coax him back into the bush away from the roundabout Mr Fitzsimmons was determined to cross the busy road. Fortunately Port Stephens Koalas' volunteer, Christine Johnson, was driving along Government Rd, where a police car with flashing lights had pulled over to the side. It’s all in a day's work for a volunteer with Port Stephens Koalas to rescue koalas in need. Christine Johnson told News Of The Area, “We were all very concerned for the koala's safety, and it was going to take a while for the koala rescue to get there. “Police Officer Sean Smith arrived with a basket, but it was too small to transport the

koala in.” Christine loaded Mr Fitzsimmons into the back of the paddy-wagon with the help of the police officers. “He gripped onto a small cushion we had, and I bundled

him under a blanket,” she said. For Christine it was a rather unusual day, she travelled in the back of the paddy-wagon securing the koala throughout the ride

During the works, Council will also build new pathways to improve accessibility at the site.

Construction of a new accessible amenities building has been delayed for redesign following community feedback in March. This project is expected to be ready for construction in 2022. Little Beach boat ramp will be closed from Tuesday 13 July and is scheduled to reopen at the end of September 2021. IT has been almost a decade since former Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox from the Hunter Valley spoke out against alleged cover ups within the NSW Police and the Catholic Church in an open letter to former premier Barry O’Farrell. Peter is most commonly noted as the ‘whistleblower’ whose actions led to former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard calling on a Royal Commission investigating child sex abuse, probing organisations from Scouts to schools, state authorities and religious organisations, most significantly the Catholic churches of Australia. Recently Mr Fox spoke at a VIEW Club event in Hawks Nest where he bumped into two people whom he had worked with throughout his career; one being the ex-head of analytical laboratories in Lidcombe, and another, a former Magistrate. After moving to the Hunter Valley in 1983, Peter worked in the Cessnock Police Department where he first investigated child sex abuse cases. Peter spoke to News Of The Area about his career. “I think the first major case that occurred in the Hunter Valley was Father Vince Ryan (charged with 53 counts of Child Sex abuse). “The terrible reality was that the abuse was occurring in the Catholic Church immediately behind the Cessnock Police Station where I was working at the time,” he said. At that time, many were horrified to hear of the abuse within a Church, however this was just the tip of the iceberg. Peter then helped to convict Denis McAlinden, which he deems as “by far the worst offender that I’m aware of”; a Parish Priest who abused children across the world; and Father Jim (James) Fletcher, who was Peter’s local priest at the time. “I remember thinking geez, these fellows are coming up again and again, and it wasn't just the ones I was dealing with, I was aware that Newcastle was dealing with so many others too and there had to be people in the church that knew about what was

going on. “This couldn’t just be going on with no one aware,” Peter said. So that’s where he started looking. With other police officers distraught and told to cease investigating, Peter was determined to get to the bottom of the bigger issue and made contact with two nieces of Denis McAlinden, who both had been sexually abused as children. “When I spoke to them it really shocked me that not only were they giving me verbal accounts of their abuse, but that they'd been to the hierarchy of the church and expected something to be done and nothing was ever done,” Peter recalled. The two women then provided Peter with copies of the statements, and Detective Fox began to investigate that particular matter but soon was directed to surrender all the statements and to cease investigating the matter, heightening his concerns. In short, this led to him speaking out. Four days after his letter, a Royal

Commission was announced separating the Hunter Valley matters from other cases and Peter was labelled a discredited witness. “Even though technically I wasn’t on trial, I felt like I was,” said Peter. Eventually, Mr Fox retired from the Police Force. “It certainly took a very personal toll on myself, my wife and our family with what transpired as all of a sudden I’d gone from a fairly high profile, experienced investigator with the police to someone discredited overnight,” he said. Peter’s actions consequently ended his career but also brought justice, eventuating in the Royal Commission referring 2575 people to authorities. “In your quiet moments

you sit and reflect and think ‘why did this have to happen to happen to me?’” “You look back at it and you think, ‘well, was it worth it?’” “And I don't even need to answer that - of course it was,” said Peter. For the families of the victims, it was just pure bad luck. “They were guarding their families as I guard mine, but their families fell victim to it. “It just absolutely churns your stomach to think that your child could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time or the wrong school and that’s really all it would have taken,” said Peter.

Port Stephens Legacy’s New Chair By Marian SAMPSON

THERE’s a new hand on the helm of Port Stephens Legacy and for the first time it’s a woman’s one. Carol Selkirk is the first woman in Port Stephens Legacy’s history to hold this position. She comes well credentialled having previously served on the Executive as Secretary and as Vice Chair and, prior to that, has had extensive experience with Sydney Legacy. As the new Chair of Port Stephens Legacy, Carol will succeed Legatee Doug Jacka who will remain on the Executive Committee. The new Executive Committee for 2021/2022 comprises of Carol Selkirk (Chair), Peter Polack (Vice Chair), Doug Jacka (Vice Chair), Foz Breckenridge (Treasurer) and Bob Brown (Secretary). Brigadier in the Australian Army, is the new Secretary while Foz Breckenridge, a Reservist in the RAAF, takes up the role of Treasurer, moving from his previous role as Vice Chair. Clarence Town Road upgrades ESSENTIAL upgrades to Clarence Town Road are progressing well, with Port Stephens and Dungog Councils undertaking rehabilitation works between Raymond Terrace and Dungog. The works are thanks to $20 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Roads of Strategic Importance program and $5 million from the NSW Government. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the works have been made possible by the Australian Government’s $4.9 billion Roads of Strategic Importance initiative. "The project will deliver upgrades to 22 sections of road to rehabilitate a critical link between Dungog and Raymond Terrace. “The project will improve safety and freight efficiency, extend the existing B-Double networks and boost the productivity of local industries. "It's also an important link for families who are travelling to work, school and for our primary producers

who are getting product to market. “These works will ensure a safer journey for all. “The Clarence Town Road – Raymond Terrace to Dungog project is a key piece of our road network and opening up corridors to provide more reliable and safe road network will improve connectivity between people and jobs and facilitate movement of goods to markets,” Dr Gillespie said. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said works are in full swing. “There are 4 sections of the project that have already been completed or underway out of the 11 sections being delivered by the Port Stephens Council. “This is already making a big difference for drivers on Clarence Town Road, which has been impacting safety, commercial farm, tourist and community use for some time,“ he said. Works currently underway include pavement rehabilitation and rejuvenation, shoulder widening, alignment corrects, drainage and ancillary works.

SOLDIERS Point Bowling Club hosted its major Men's Singles Final last week before an enthusiastic crowd. The final turned out to be an epic four- hour event with high quality bowls being played by the two finalists, Mark Sheppard and Daniel Clarke. Time and again, one player would hold the shot only to be displaced by a superior shot by his opponent. Several times, Daniel had to resort to an express drive, scattering the bowls and "killing" the end forcing it to be replayed.

After running neck and neck for most of the match, Mark finally gained the initiative by drawing three shots to win the match 31 shots to 24. Mark will now compete in the Zone Champion of Champions singles event, with the winner progressing to the NSW State Finals. Congratulations also go to Mark Hayne who won the Zone Presidents Singles competition which is open to Grade 5 bowlers and below. Held at Soldiers Point,Mark was successful in defeating several Newcastle bowlers in close matches to win this knock out event.

A RECENT meeting of the Probus Club of Port Stephens turned out to be another bonus event for members and guests with the celebration of their new Nonagenarian (someone between 90-99 years young), Club member Edna Lloyd. Edna’s husband John joined the club in 1984 and together they were heavily involved in club activities, John was a director and a life member with Edna always by his side. Edna joined the club in her own right in 2013 and still attends most meetings and social events. Edna turned ninety on 29 May with much celebration. David Heath of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “The guest speaker for this meeting was local photographer Brent Mail and his wife Tracy from Nelson Bay photographers. “Brent gave an enthusiastic q

presentation showing his fascination for Australian nature and the wildlife in South African, his country of origin.” However the duo’s showcase proves that you don’t have to go on safari in Africa to see stunning wildlife with Australia’s local dingos a highlight of the event. “The stunning photographs presented by these two passionate people kept the audience spellbound, and of particular interest was the resident Dingo family at Mungo Brush and their ongoing development,” he said. The African presentation reflected the enthusiasm of the group that did the tour in the name of photography. Infrastructure Grants program

LOCAL organisations in Port Stephens can now apply for funding to support local community projects under the Berejiklian Government’s Infrastructure Grants program. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the impacts of COVID-19 are still being widely felt and support for struggling community organisations will remain a priority for this latest round. “$12.5 million is available in 2021/22 for new or upgraded facilities across sport and recreation, arts and culture, disaster readiness and community infrastructure,” Mr Martin said. “This is an opportunity for local organisations to apply for funding for projects that will provide long-term benefits to the community. “Infrastructure Grants can fund construction, alteration, renovation, completion and fit-out of buildings and community infrastructure. “Projects funded may include new or upgraded sports grounds, museums, theatres, homeless shelters and evacuation centres.” Mr Martin said community infrastructure is now a standalone category

and it can be used for spaces like halls and meeting rooms, community transport, and infrastructure that supports youth, disability, mental health, homelessness, and domestic violence services. “This is about connecting the community, fostering participation in sport, recreation and arts, and boosting social inclusion and disaster resilience,” Mr Martin said. Since 2015, the NSW Government has funded more than 441 community projects worth $73 million under the Infrastructure Grants program. These grants are made possible by the Clubgrants Category 3 Fund which reinvests profits from registered clubs’ gaming machines into community projects. Funding is available for infrastructure projects in the following areas: Arts & Culture Disaster Readiness Community Infrastructure Sport & Recreation Applications for the second round of funding for 2019/20 are open until Monday 26 July. At the rate greater Sydney is going, it won't be long, unfortunately, before we are also once again in lockdown and then your desire to have no impromptu visitors will be mandated (don't listen to the wacko lizard people flogging juice cleanses), the government can and will do everything it can to make our community safe, even if others feel it their personal right to roam, maskless, and clueless. Nelson Bay Croquet Club win at Newcastle Doubles By David WILSON

THE Newcastle Golf Croquet Doubles competition was organised by Newcastle National Park Croquet Club and was played Saturday/Sunday 3/4 July 2021. Eight members from Nelson Bay entered the competition: Cheryl Lloyd & Sandy Tawa, Peter & Sherry Gordon, Liz Friend & Rae Uptin, Trevor Black (with Steve Dilley Jr from Maitland), and Jan Puckeridge (with Scott Davis of Newcastle). The 24 doubles pairs were seeded into four blocks based on handicap, with each block playing a round-robin of level play and a round-robin of handicap play - each pair played ten games over the two days. Liz Friend & Rae Uptin won Block C with eight wins, winning all their level play games.

Peter & Sherry Gordon finished 3rd in Block B and Scott Davis and Jan Puckeridge finished 3rd in Block D.
