The official opening of “A Journey through Colour” by Ashleigh Price artist and jupiter youth ambassador took place on April 11. Brooke Vitnell, the President of Caring for our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY), said that jupiter is the only free youth mental health counselling service in Port Stephens run by the community for the community. Alongside Ashleigh’s art work will be the promotion of jupiter’s service where

Artist Ashleigh Price told News Of The Area, “I’ve been a drawer my whole life, always envious of the way paint looked and I used to imagine how it felt to be so free and reckless - kinda crazy I know right? “I guess I spent so many years perfecting my drawings, aiming for realism is no easy feat and while I enjoyed the outcome I fell out of love with the process. “I lost the spark, the enthusiasm, the drive. “I craved, well the

exact opposite. “To be daring, careless, carefree, I craved the chaos, the mess. “And so I made the jump, about 3 years ago I started painting with a beautiful friend and artistic genius herself, Nannette Basser and I’ll never forget sitting there that first day staring at the white canvas. “Small as it was, it was so daunting - white and empty. “It stared back at me, waiting; and I didn’t know what to do. “My artistic life had consisted solely on outlines and sketches done over and over till

the proportions were just right. ”I didn’t know how to put paint down. “I didn’t know how to not be so attached to the outcome. “Even though I knew once it dried, I could paint over it if I hated it. “It was really hard (3 years in the making) to unlearn everything I had strived towards. “To unlearn perfection. “To unlearn pretty. and let go of structure, surrender to emotion; to expression; to freedom. “It felt foreign and unnatural at first, I often fell back into my fiddling pedantic ways.

Port Stephens Council has stated, “Applications for development need to consider the flood risk associated with the site and address the relevant flood planning controls provided in Council’s Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan. “Controls include various mechanisms to address the flood risk such as limiting development in high flood risk areas and raising floor levels above anticipated flood levels.” Anna Bay has been mired by other failed ecotourism developments,

one of which has left a scar on the landscape and residents outraged. Anna Bay residents are not all convinced that this development is right for the area, local Kelly Hammond who has been fighting hard to get change at the “eyesore” told News Of The Area, “When you mention Ecotourism in Anna Bay the first thing that comes to mind is our very own eco friendly sand swallowing 8-year-old "eyesore". “So, we try to ignore the white elephant at the end of our village. “The Bay Resort 4177 Nelson Bay Road Anna Bay was sent back to the drawing board and now returns redesigned on stilts, I for one will need convincing that it is a genuine Eco-Resort,” said Hammond.

Cane Toads In Hunter By Marian SAMPSON

CANE toads were released in North Queensland in 1935 it was believed that they would help control beetles that were damaging sugar cane crops. These introduced pests have not only taken a foothold in Queensland but have migrated rapidly poisoning native species. This migration has seen multiple cane toads found in the Hunter as well as on the

Mid North Coast. Cane toads have previously been found in Salamander Bay.and Hawks Nest. As cane toads aren’t native to Australia, there are no natural predators or diseases that control them.. The Cane Toad has become a huge threat to the biodiversity of the nation with a female cane toad able to lay 70,000 eggs. Scientists have determined that it may be more effective

to increase our understanding of cane toads and how to minimise their impact on Australia’s ecosystems. The Department of Agriculture, water and environment states, “We don’t want cane toads to establish in the Hunter - it only takes one toad to have a huge impact on our biodiversity. “If you catch a suspected cane toad, don’t kill it but store it in a ventilated container and report all sightings

Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Thankfully all the quilts and craft items were unharmed. “With the support of our volunteers and fantastic local trade people our Maintenance Director was able to obtain the support she required to save our beautiful heritage building from further damage.” Now that repairs are completed, the gallery has reopened. From 21 April until 8 June the Centre will be holding an exhibition entitled “Exploring Faces and Spaces as well as Spinners and Weavers”. Meryl and the members of the Centre invite everyone to pop in to see the artists’ interpretation which could be - people, animals, clocks, urban landscapes – all these and more have faces just waiting for your interpretation. “This might be through paint, fabric, or 3D items. “Spinners and Weavers have two years of creations to keep you warm this winter be quick! “The garden café is scheduled to open 24 April. “Watch our Facebook Page for more information,” she said. Residents of Port Stephens and the Midcoast are being asked by their local authorities to be vigilant and to learn how to identify cane toads. “If you intend to dispose of cane toads it’s important you can tell the difference between cane toads and local native frogs so you don’t kill frogs by accident.

“While adult cane toads are usually very large - around 9 to 15 centimetres (or 3.5 to 5 inches) long, smaller toads can easily be confused with native frogs. “Cane toads have a number of distinguishing features, including: dry, warty skin that may be grey, yellowish, olivebrown or reddish-brown: a bony ridge from their eyes to their nose; leathery webbing between their back toes; no webbing between their front toes and large glands on each shoulder.”

EROSION at Stockton Beach is an issue that many residents are impacted by. Businesses have suffered temporary closures and the old tip site has been exposed. Now there is positive action and the City of Newcastle is seeking feedback from the community on erosion management options for the northern area of Stockton Beach as part of work underway on the

Stockton Coastal Management Program (CMP) 2021. The land to the north of Meredith Street is owned and managed by Defence Housing Australia, Hunter Water, Crown Land and the Department of Communities and Justice, and the City of Newcastle is working closely with these stakeholders during development of the 2021 CMP. Four schemes have been identified to best complement the mass sand nourishment agreed on in the Stockton CMP 2020 while also providing a buffer from erosion and considering the environment, social amenity and recreational use of the beach.

The schemes being considered for further investigation for the northern end of Stockton Beach from Meredith Street to the Port Stephens Local Government Area boundary include maintenance nourishment, an artificial reef, an artificial headland and sand back passing. Sand Nourishment involves replacing around 45 olympic swimming pools of sand that currently moves north from Stockton Beach along the Stockton Bight each year. Actively ‘keeping the sand moving’ reinstating the natural sand flow. An Artificial Headland would involve building an artificial headland that would extend into the ocean by around 150 to 200 metres. This would slow the northern movement of sand along Stockton Bight while creating recreational benefits. An Artificial Reef involves building a submerged artificial reef. The artificial reef would slow the northward movement of sand along Stockton Bight by reducing wave energy reaching the beach, providing a surfing benefit. Using a Sand Back Passing System involves recirculating sand using machinery that will collect sand, feeding it via a pipe network to the south, to outlets placed along Stockton Beach. The event is all about seniors getting out and having fun while connecting with their community. This year’s Seniors Festival is offering a range of free events and activities. You can learn to improve your swimming stroke at Tomaree Swimming Pool. Attend a Boomerang Bags art and craft session at the Raymond Terrace Senior Citizens Hall or take on some low impact martial arts at Terrace Central. Seniors are also eligible to enjoy a free yoga class at Medowie or One Mile Beach with Yogasphere. There are cooking demonstrations, woodworking demonstrations and sessions as well as an open day at the Men’s Shed where you can stand shoulder to shoulder with other blokes while keeping busy. Karuah RSL and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club are hosting a free lunch with a jumping jukebox session and Tilligerry RSL are also holding a free seniors lunch with live entertainment. One Shoal Bay senior told News Of The Area, “I am looking forward to hearing the Australian Stories in Song at the library.” On a more serious note there are some finance and legal sessions for seniors as well as e-safety tips for using the internet. For those that would like to delve into the Indigenous culture and heritage here in Port Stephens there is also a cultural awareness activity which includes a tour of Worimi Conservation Lands Learn about Aboriginal culture where participating seniors can enjoy a 4WD tour and free lunch. Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said work is underway on the Stockton CMP 2021, with an aim of identifying additional coastal management options to extend the life of mass sand nourishment. “We’re investigating the feasibility of these schemes to ensure each is possible and would provide consideration to the entire Stockton Bight,” Cr Nelmes said. “During this early phase we are gathering feedback from the community on the schemes that have been developed to help prolong mass sand nourishment. “The Stockton Community Liaison Group has provided feedback on the positives and drawbacks of each scheme, allowing the designs to progress to this point. “We would now like to hear from the wider community about what people like or don’t like about the options we’re considering, and why.” City of Newcastle is working closely with owned and managed by Defence Housing Australia, Hunter Water, Crown Land and the Department of Communities and Justice during development of the 2021 CMP. “These stakeholders must agree to the coastal management actions in the Stockton CMP 2021 to allow it to be sent for certification from the State Government. Without agreement, the CMP cannot progress,” Cr Nelmes said. The community is encouraged to learn more about the management options and provide feedback at newcastle.nsw.gov.au/ Stockton or by accessing a paper survey at Stockton Library. There are drop in sessions where members of the public can speak to the project team on 15 and 22 April 2021.

Stockton Bridge maintenance work

TRANSPORT for NSW say motorists who use Stockton Bridge each day will be pleased to hear essential maintenance work is speeding ahead and is on track to be completed by mid-2021. Transport for NSW Director North Region Anna Zycki said the iconic bridge’s $6 million facelift is being funded by the NSW Government and is being carried out to ensure the crossing of the Hunter River continues to provide a safe and reliable journey for years to come. “More than 19,000 vehicles a day use this essential transport and freight link between Newcastle and Port Stephens, and almost 1000 of those are heavy vehicles,” Ms Zycki said. “Maintaining the four-lane, 23-span concrete arch bridge is no easy feat but crews have been working within the bridge’s interior 35 metres above the river, installing steel plates to strengthen the expansion joints. “This work is helping

support eight full time positions and is also providing employment for another eight companies, including steel fabricators and spray painters. “Work is now progressing on fitting steel plates externally and to do this, crews are using a customdesigned lightweight access platform which is 11 metres wide and stretches under the entire width of the bridge.” Ms Zycki said this purposebuilt apparatus has been key to the success and quality of work to date. “This platform allows the crew to safely access difficult areas on the bridge and make steady progress without any major setbacks or issues,” Ms Zycki said. “The project team is currently installing the external steel plates at the Newcastle end of the bridge and once this is complete, the scaffold will be moved to the Stockton end to complete the works.” Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their continued patience while this essential work is carried out. To Russia with Love

WITH ANZAC Day approaching, it's probably appropriate to focus on the RAAF, as this year celebrates the centenary of its formation in 1921. We will also trace the service of a certain Grant Lindeman who retired as a distinguished WW2 commander to become an oyster farmer in Lemon Tree Passage. Today the RAAF has some 14,000 serving personnel and 309 aircraft. It's hard to believe, but during WW2 the RAAF had 216,000 serving men and women consisting of 76 squadrons and 6000 aircraft. It was, at the time, the fourth largest air force in the world. On top of this, the air force suffered the highest number of casualties for its size of any of our armed forces with around 10,000 killed. Huge numbers of our young fighter and bomber

crews perished in the skies over Britain and Germany. With this as a backdrop in mind we begin our tale of leadership, sacrifice and hardship in the frozen arctic seas. Convoys carrying vital war equipment were sent to Russia to assist in the war against the Germans. It was no easy task as the two major ports of Archaengelsk and Murmansk were icebound and only accessible during the brief Arctic summer when the sun never set. Convoy escort was essential to protect them from German submarines and bombers but one convoy, PQ 17,was left unattended and 24 of the 34 transports were sunk. An Australian, newly promoted Wing Commander Grant Lindeman, was chosen to lead a squadron of torpedo bombers to Russia to give convoy protection and to train Russian pilots. He had previously distinguished himself in coastal patrol duties.

It was no easy task as bad weather and navigational problems saw some not make it. Indeed one of the pilots who ran out of fuel, Jimmy Catanach, (second from left in the photo) was captured and executed by the Nazis. For outstanding leadership, Lindeman, aged just 28, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He finished his war service with the rank of Group Captain. After the war, Grant Lindeman became an oyster farmer at Lemon Tree Passage. He was a regular guest at the Officers' Mess at RAAF Williamtown where he was treated with great respect. Lagoons Estate Saga By Marian SAMPSON

THE Lagoons Estate development has been plagued by flooding since it was built and the costs to the community have stacked up. Lagoons Estate comprises 8.44 hectares of land bounded by Dowling Street to the east and south, and is substantially the low point in a catchment area of about 68 hectares. The land's lower 2.2 hectares was a dunal swale supporting a melaleuca paperbark forest and some swamp mahogany trees. This area was described as an ephemeral wetland, meaning that it was from time to time inundated as the water table rose with prolonged rainfall but was dry when the water table fell. After almost 20 years of ongoing legal proceedings, Port Stephens Council came to an agreement with the current owners of Lagoons Estate. In January 2020 Council published the following statement in relation to Nelson Bay’s Lagoons Estate. “Since 2002, the cost to ratepayers has been $7.15 million on public drainage works, settlements and legal

costs, with an estimated $2 million to be spent on future public drainage works. “All costs to date have been disclosed in Council’s financial statements and annual reports.” Mayor Ryan Palmer stated, “This Council has worked hard to resolve a complicated drainage issue and it’s disappointing that it has been going on for many, many years,” he said. However extensive drainage efforts have not managed to stop the residences from flooding during the March 2021 extreme weather event. News Of The Area put some questions to Council on this and they have responded. “We have undertaken remedial works on our drainage infrastructure. “More work will be required to ensure the system can cope with large rain events.” There has been a general concern raised by members of the community in relation to costs incurred due to the recent flooding at Lagoons Estate and whether the local ratepayers will be footing the bill. Council said, “As this event has been declared a natural disaster, we are working with the NSW Government to recoup

costs through emergency grants.” Going forward, Council is working closely with Lagoons Estate Community Association for short and long-term solutions to flooding. “As this was a natural disaster, we have been able to pump out flooded areas such as Anna Bay and Lagoons Estate as part of our emergency response. “We wish to thank the local NSW Police and Hunter Water for facilitating this pumping.” Council went on to say that the weather event in May 2021 was unprecedented and that most drainage systems are not designed to handle the amount of rainfall Nelson Bay experienced. “Future Development Applications need to consider the flood risk associated with the site and address the relevant flood planning controls provided in Council’s Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan. “Controls include various mechanisms to address the flood risk such as limiting development in high flood risk areas and raising floor levels above anticipated flood levels.”

IN a new study by the University of New England, it has been revealed that 80 per cent of New South Wales farmers have reported being targeted by criminals. It has been reported that between 2015 and 2020 over $22.5 million worth of livestock, including cattle and sheep have been stolen across regional New South Wales, with an

The survey of 552 farms from a vast geographical spread across New South Wales has also displayed shocking statistics of victimisation with 23.3 percent of farmers experiencing any time of farm crime more than seven times, and 76.8 percent experiencing farm crime more than twice. Dear Tina, Now I can't make a professional judgement, but perhaps you are a bit of an introvert and the screaming shrieks, strobe lights, vertiginous rides, loudspeakers playing the theme from Deliverance and 60,000 people dashing around looking at oversized pumpkins and rally cars just isn't your vibe. We are all different, Tina. That's what makes the world an interesting and intriguing place. Personally, my favourite places at the Royal Easter Show are the Lost Persons room, which I like to think of as a metaphor for contemporary life, and the art displays. Throw in a pig and a bloke cutting a bit of timber and I'm done. For others, though, they thrive on the loud screams of others. They embrace the idea of battling crowds while vacuuming up some reconstituted offal and deepfried batter dipped in a slosh of tomato sauce, and they are enthralled watching the temper tantrums of children on sugar highs whose dads can't win a fluffy unicorn. Maybe you should start with something less taxing that mirrors the big event as a way of building up to it. Chop some wood in your backyard wearing a navy singlet and steel-capped boots (safety first). Put a blue ribbon on your dog and pop it in a cage for half an hour. Play the theme music to The Fast and The Furious and drive some Matchbox cars around a hand-chalked track. Make some colourful cellophane glasses and shine a flashlight in your eyes ever few minutes while spinning in circles to mimic The Beast ride. Lock the bathroom door and wait 30 minutes until you can enter in preparation for the real deal where there are queues of people with bladder issues. Slow steps, Tina. Slow steps.

THE Addams Family Young @ Part is a shortened version of the Broadway Addams Family Musical, presented by The Young People’s Theatre. The musical is based around the familiar family everyone knows and loves, with a twistWednesday Addams has fallen in love with a very normal boy, Lucas Beineke and is planning on getting married to him. The Young People’s Theatre has double cast the show with 44 students across, with the ‘Creepy’ and ‘Spooky’ casts. Assistant directed by Port Stephens’ Harold Phipps, and starring Bridget Phipps in the role of Mortica, the production will have you impressed by the professionalism of the young cast. From the first clicks of the theme song, to the comedic ‘Just Around The Corner’, and the fun ‘Let’s Not Talk About Anything Else’, the whole cast were given many opportunities to shine. A highlight of the production was the phenomenal Bridget Phipps. Her performance of Mortica stole the show, from her developed poise, outstanding comedic timing and brilliant vocals. I can see Bridget performing on Broadway in a matter of years. Her counterpart Gomez, played by Jackson Archer was the perfect casting choice, with the complex role performed with clever wit and hilarious acting choices. Uncle Fester, played by Aiden Clarke had audiences bursting with laughter every time he appeared, complimented brilliantly by the ensemble. Amelia Accardi performed Wednesday Addams with the perfect contrast of naivety and darkness, and Mabel Moras-Young cleverly took on the of Pugsley, a young child with a lot of angst. Special recognition should go to Sophia Bastian who spooked audiences with her performance of Lurch. Carpe diem, Riley Freebody played the role of Lucas excellently, and I can see a bright future for him in Jasminda. further roles. Gaming Profits Stack Up By Marian SAMPSON

WHEN it comes to gambling there are plenty of punters willing to put their money into poker machines. For some a trip to the local club and a flutter on the “pokies” is a fun part of life. For others gambling is an addiction which leads to other issues including financial hardship. This week has seen Liquor and Gaming NSW release its latest gaming machine data reports as part of the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to transparency on gambling activity across the state. Some will see the figures

as staggering. Between 1 June, 2020 and 30 November, 2020 the total net profit from gaming machines in NSW Clubs is $2,171,070,059. From this the government collects $436,741,144 in tax. Other venues with gaming machines including hotels reported a net profit of $1,567,974,851 between 1 July 2020 and 31 December 2020. Surfers in the competition have been enjoying pumping four-foot surf. Boys and Girls divisions for the event include 8-andUnder Mixed, 10-and-Under, 12-and-Under, 14-and-Under and 16-and-Under.
