receiving an OAM in 2020 for her services to the Indigenous community of the Hunter. Ms Ball was the first Aboriginal woman to graduate Year 12 in her country of Gumbangerri (Armidale). She moved to Port Stephens in the mid 1990’s where she cofounded the Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation in 1994 in response to local need. The organisation guides service users through programs including emergency relief, family support, housing, employment and medical services. She is now Executive Director of the service and also serves as a member of the Port Stephens West Local Health Committee, and is CEO of the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council. She also serves as Deputy Chair, of Awabakal Ltd., an organisation that provides health care, aged care and family services to Aboriginal people in the wider Newcastle region. She is also a founding

Parkinson’s Support Name Change By Mitchell LEES THE Tomaree Parkinson’s Support Group will undergo a name change in 2021, to expand beyond the Eastern Peninsula to intake the whole of the region. Now dubbed the Port Stephens Parkinson’s Support Group (PSPSG), the community-based organisation will look to reach more of the population affected by the disease. Support group leader, Bob Crampton, said that while 2020 had been challenging through the COVID-19 pandemic, the members were still able to meet regularly and recently rallied together for some festive celebrations. “Our group got together at Pearson Park just before Christmas for an end of year picnic,” said Mr Crampton. “We had 16 members

Lions and Probus Members Donate to SES By Marian SAMPSON
THERE are many groups doing good locally and the SES are the people who don their high vis gear, and walk out the door to help us when we are all locking ourselves inside; they are the ones climbing on roofs during storms and helping at roadside accidents. They brave storms and floods and attend motor vehicle accidents. They cut down fallen trees and clear our roads, and they do it all as volunteers. The now defunct Raymond Terrace Ladies Probus Club used their final funds, and banded together with the Raymond Terrace Lions Club, to purchase the latest load rated Rescue Cribbing for rapid stabilisation
of crashed vehicles, to assist Port Stephens SES Rescue Unit. These plastic blocks of various shapes and sizes are superior to the previously used timber blocks which become slippery in wet weather. The Raymond Terrace Lions Club and the Ladies Probus Club held a meeting at the Port Stephens SES Rescue Unit, to observe the use of new stabilisation blocks used by Port Stephens SES Rescue in their road crash rescue work they undertake across Port Stephens. The Port Stephens SES have been providing Rescue services to Port Stephens for 50 years, having commenced in 1970, and have 3 Rescue trucks (light Rescue, Medium Rescue and Heavy Rescue) manned and available 24 hours per day 365 days per year in support of our community.
David Cockbain, spokesman for the SES Rescue Unit said, “The donation of this equipment to our busy SES Unit could not have come at a better time, as this is the busiest time of the year for our unit and will enhance the safety of both our Rescue operators, Ambulance Paramedics and patients. “On behalf of the NSW SES we thank you for your commitment to our community.” “At the time of publication, as the State Rescue Board accredited General Land Rescue Unit for the area, Port Stephens SES have responded to 37 Rescues and persons trapped in motor vehicle accidents this year and are extremely grateful for such an asset which is essentially life changing.” SES Commander Bruce Gendre thanked both groups for their

THE Little Tern breeding season is now in full swing, with progeny present at every stage from eggs, chicks through to fledged juveniles over three sites on Corrie Island and Winda Woppa beach. There has been combined effort, mainly from NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Save our Species(SoS) program, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Mid Coast Council, Hunter Bird Observers Club and Myall Koala and Environment Group to secure, protect and monitor the endangered beachnesting birds. The breeding Little Tern chooses the best conditions for nests, and this can change from year to year. Increasingly all native fauna are finding it hard

The overwhelming positive response, aside from one instance of sign and fence vandalism, from the beach-going public and their pets has been most heartening. So many people are reading and adhering to the in situ signs and brochures around Hawks Nest and generally taking an interest in the progress of bird activities at this important time of year. Pied Oystercatchers are also endangered shorebirds, and the natural conditions in Port Stephens result in this area being an important feeding and breeding ground for a significant percentage of the world population of this species. from the Mayor's desk Staying COVID Safe These Holidays GIVEN how popular Port Stephens is particularly at this time of year, it’s important that we remind our visitors, businesses and the community to stay COVID Safe over the peak holiday period. The current situation in NSW and across the world is a reminder to us all that we need to say vigilant when it comes to COVID-19. While there is hope with a vaccine in sight — we will continue to follow COVID Safe practices throughout 2021 to keep our community safe. As I’ve said before, there is no need to panic but it is important to be alert and ensure we all stay 1.5 meters apart, wearing masks where necessary, washing our hands and getting tested if we have any symptoms. I’d also encourage our business community to make sure they have robust COVID Safe plans in place. This includes QR codes for contact tracing, physical distancing signage and turning people away if they are coming from hotspots. I ask that people from hotspots follow the Premier’s advice and do not travel to Port Stephens or other holiday areas to keep our community safe. This is the busiest time of year for Port Stephens and we all need to make sure we do our part to protect the health and safety of our community. We all need to play our part to keep COVID Safe — so let’s make sure we follow the NSW Health advice, avoid travelling unless it’s necessary and planning our visits to recreational areas out of peak times and report breaches of the NSW public health order to the Police Assistance Line on 13 14 44. BEN Anderson of Tomaree High School was one of over 68,000 students across New South Wales who sat their High School Certificate in 2020. After a disrupted year where many students fell short with their studies, Ben rose to the occasion receiving an excellent ATAR of 96.95. This number is his Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, meaning that Ben received results better than 96.95% of students. This result earned Ben with many accolades, including the

Probus Reboots For 2021

IF ever our community has needed a fresh start, 2021 is the year for it. The Medowie Combined Probus Club is pressing the reboot button and they are having the first meeting for 2021 on 20 January, making a fresh start to the year. The group will be meeting at the Medowie Community Centre at 10.00 on the Wednesday and it is to be hoped that this year will be much better than 2020. Kevin Tomlinson told News Of The Area, members hope that the impending roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine will offer great hope that the pandemic may be controlled.” As over 55’s the group are considered vulnerable to the virus and a vaccination program is high on their wish list for the
New Year. “Our members are looking forward to the new Probus year and with proposed activities, guest speakers and planning for the Club Birthday in July (we hope),” he said. 2021 marks the 18th Anniversary for the Medowie Probus Club. The club has big plans for the anniversary with plans for the celebrations already underway however the club is mindful that in times of COVID-19. Members of the Club believe that current developments in Medowie augur well for the Club with developments like Tallowood over 55’s lifestyle village seeing first stage residents moving in. The club is hoping for an influx of new members in the

Storm Wreaks Havoc TILLIGERRY has had more than its fair share of wild weather in the past as it is an exposed peninsular. Indeed, such was the damage due to the effects of a cyclonic depression some years ago, that the State Governor was choppered in. David Hurley AC, DSC, FTC and his wife Linda inspected first hand the damage and also thanked our local firies for their efforts to restore vital services. Just last week, a storm cell carved a path of destruction in Mallabula with some 80 mm of torrential rain being dumped and winds recorded at around 100kph. The unusual thing about this storm was that it really only impacted on one street – Hartford St – in Mallabula. Usually the waterfront areas cop the full blast of the storms but this time it was different. A large tree from a corner house fell onto the roof of a neighbouring property. The single occupant was lucky to be in the lounge room at the time as the main bedroom bore the brunt of the damage. Several SES and RFS units as well as the Power Authority were quickly on the scene. The following day clean

Raymond Terrace man arrested ABOUT 11.45am on Tuesday 5 January 2021, officers from Newcastle City Police District were patrolling the Wallsend area when they stopped a Subaru Forester on Cowper Street and spoke with two men – aged 26 and 30. Both men were arrested in relation to traffic offences and outstanding arrest warrants. Police conducted a search of the vehicle during which officers located precursors consistent with the alleged manufacture of prohibited drugs, along with drug paraphernalia, methylamphetamine and GBL. NSW Fire and & Rescue HAZMAT crews were called
to render the scene safe, with officers attached to the State Crime Command Drug and Firearms Squad’s Chemical Operations Team deployed to process the scene. The alleged driver – a 30-year-old Jesmond man – was charged with driving a motor vehicle during the disqualification period. A 26-year-old Raymond Terrace man was charged with four outstanding warrants for numerous property, drug, weapon and breach of bail offences. Both men were refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 6 January 2021. Investigations into the items located during the vehicle search are ongoing.

Dance Concert Brings Hope Dave Burnett Twilight By Tara CAMPBELL
COVID-19 may have stopped most of the entertainment industry, but Medowie dance company Dance ‘n Dazzle Studio went above and beyond to arrange and perform a Live COVID-19 safe concert. For 26 years, the studio has celebrated students success through mini concerts, eisteddfods, public performances and examinations, however, with such an unpredictable year, all of these events were cancelled. Studio Principal, Corynne Darcy, tried to remain optimistic all year even after having to shut the studio down for four and a half months. Finally restrictions eased and the studio began to plan an end of year concert to bring hope. “When we were allowed to re-open, we began ordering costumes from Australian companies as we knew they were needed and welcoming sales and sewing opportunities.

When costumes began arriving you couldn’t wipe the smiles off the kids’ faces, they were so excited and the parents were even happier because it gave everyone hope and something to look forward to,” Corynne said. The COVID safe concert was the only opportunity for students of Dance ‘n Dazzle Studio to perform all year and was held at Irrawang High School, allowing for a very small audience. Implementing the customary Service NSW check in and social distancing, the studio also hired a professional videographer and photographer to ensure that all family and friends were able to experience the concert. From the youngest students of the studio, Tiny Dazzlers (aged two to four years old) to Adult Ballet, Jazz and Tap classes, the end of year concert ensured that everyone involved in the studio still had something to look forward to in such a difficult year.

RESUMING meetings after a lengthy COVID-19 break, Fingal Bay Probus Club members were ready for a celebration. There could not have been a better time than Christmas! The club’s business matters were swiftly handled at a general meeting and then it was time for morning tea or coffee with catch-up chats – and cake for all to enjoy. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “This was followed by a PowerPoint presentation of our activities compiled by photographer Lynn Moffitt, aided by newsletter editor Trish McClung. “Despite all the regulations, many of us had stayed in touch whenever possible with

Members in attendance then enjoyed some Christmas songs, a few carols of course, as well as gems such as an Aussie Jingle Bells and then they were ready for a feast organised by wine and dine officers Vicki and John Archer. Beautifully decorated tables awaited us, and a menu with a great selection of mains and dessert provided by the helpful and happy staff at the Fingal Bay Sports Club Bistro. Triples THE Stockton Men’s Bowling Club opened it’s 2021 Bowling Program with the playing of the Dave Burnett Twilight Triples. This event was run over 3 nights, on 6, 7, and 8 January. The weather seemed likely to play a big part in the running of the Tournament but all games were able to be played. Twenty eight teams
nominated and played 15 ends of 3 Bowls Triples over the 3 nights. The composite team of Ian Percival, (Charlestown BC), John Mackenzie (Cardiff BC) and Andrew Capararo (Water Board BC) who all compete using a “Bowlers Arm” and quite adeptly as the results proved. They finished in 1st spot when they won all of their 3 games with a plus margin of 66 shots. 2nd place went to the Wallsend Side of E Lewis, L Kennedy and M.Lewis (3 wins
+ 45 shots). 3rd spot went to the Stockton combination of Col Firkin, John Price and Ric Clark (3 wins + 20 shots) and 4th place went to the Charlestown team of R.Steel, D.King and D.Hill (3 wins + 18 shots). Bowls Organizer John Price officiated at the presentation of prize money and he, and all the members who assisted behind the scenes were applauded in what all players agreed was a very successful tournament.

Surf Boats take on rough Nobbys seas Tea Gardens Hawks Nest SLSC takes on Round 5 of the Streets Surf Boat Series
IT was a day of strong results in rough seas for Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club teams on Saturday, for Round 5 of the Streets Surf Boat Series at Nobbys Beach. Club members took out first place in the Junior Boys category, while the Opens teams came second and fourth.
The Club’s Reserve Crew walked away with a first, second and third in testing conditions. Unfortunately the girls competition was called off due to the dangerous ocean conditions. Competition will resume on Saturday 13 February at
Ocean Beach, before the series finale on Saturday 27 March at Soldiers. The Streets Surf Boat Series is the premier surf boat series in Australia and has been enjoyed by Central Coast and Hunter boat crews for the past 25 years. q Teams battled rough conditions at Nobbys Beach for Round 5 of the Streets Surf Boat Series.
The teams will compete in two more rounds of the series.

OVER the past couple of months, residents of Tea Gardens have reported being harassed by a group of males riding the streets on their bicycles late at night, and conducting themselves in an offensive and affronting manner. Specifically, residents of Shoreline Drive Tea Gardens have complained this group has been targeting houses along that street by using offensive language, harassing dogs causing them to bark excessively, throwing projectiles upon roofs, and igniting fireworks in a near-by reserve. TANILBA Sailing Club has high hopes for its entry in the upcoming F18 class catamaran titles to be held at Speers Point over the Australia Day weekend. A combination of experience from Mike Colecliffe and the youthful exuberance of 'Dangerous Damo' should ensure a sound showing from their entry: 027 'Acme Fireball'. Indeed, their outstanding performance at a recent club outing saw them surge through the field on the downwind leg in a stiff 15 knot Nor' Easter. Four craft gathered on the day for an impromptu sail on the high tide at their Tanilba waterfront site on January 3 to keep their hand in over the holiday break. The club season lasts from Fathers' Day to Mothers' Day and new members are welcome with training freely provided for interested youngsters. Trainer Sam Breaden said that it was very much a family oriented club with parents of the budding sailors assisting in the smooth running and in general maintenance.
