Deputy Mayor Paul LeMottee has failed to have his nomination accepted by the Australian Electoral Commission, it is understood that he is contesting the matter. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington is asking residents to consider how they vote with care. She told News Of The Area, “The people of Port Stephens deserve representatives who act with integrity and always put the interests of our community first. “As a local leader, I’ve learned the most important skill is listening. “When leaders don’t listen, they can’t be trusted to speak for us. “We need energetic and engaged people on Council who will listen and deliver,” she said.

Changed overnight traffic conditions at Raymond Terrace MOTORISTS are advised of changed overnight traffic conditions from this week on the Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace to carry out maintenance work on bridges over Richardson Road and Mount Hall Road. Work starting on Monday 8 November includes routine

maintenance on the bridge noise walls in both directions on the highway. To minimise impact to motorists, work will be carried out from 6.30pm to 5am from Sundays to Thursdays and is expected to be complete in five weeks, weather permitting. Lane closures and a 60km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may impact travel times.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control. PM Launches Hydrogen Energy Solution With Hunter Hub For Zero Emissions at Tomago FROM Page 1

Newcastle are perched in a space that has business ready to adopt and develop new technology. The Prime Minister recognised the potential of the Hunter to be a leader of Australia’s clean hydrogen industry which continues to grow, with work beginning on the viability of a hydrogen hub at the Port of Newcastle. The Morrison Government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), will deliver an extra $1.5 million to support Macquarie Group’s Green Investment Group, the Port of Newcastle and project partners to conduct a $3 million study on the hub’s potential. The study will consider the best location in the Port for hydrogen infrastructure, with Newcastle having great potential both as a local energy provider and exporter of clean hydrogen. Other project partners include Snowy Hydro, Idemitsu, Keolis Downer, Lake Macquarie, Jemena, and project collaborators Macquarie Agriculture and the University of Newcastle. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the study would identify the region’s current and future potential as a

hydrogen hub.

“Newcastle and the Hunter will be a key part of the $1.2 billion we’re investing in Australia’s hydrogen industry,” the Prime Minister said.

“The region has been key to Australia’s energy security and with continuing strong demand for baseload power fuels and the potential as a clean energy hub, Newcastle and the Hunter will be an important part of Australia’s transition under our plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050. “Newcastle is the biggest port on the east coast, with 50 percent of its capacity available for future industry development making it a great asset for the region to become one of the seven Clean Hydrogen Industrial Hubs my government is delivering. “Not only does it have the highly skilled workforce and natural resources to sustain a hydrogen industry, the Port also has existing export routes to the important markets of

Japan and Korea. “We’re committed to developing a world-leading hydrogen industry while providing investment and growth opportunities for our communities like Newcastle and the Hunter.” Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said the Government was determined to reach the goal of producing clean hydrogen at a competitive price, and this work underway in the Hunter will help Australia to achieve that goal. “This feasibility study will investigate the deployment of a 40 MW electrolyser, which would be four times bigger than the current largest electrolysers in the world,” Minister Taylor said. “Producing hydrogen in the Hunter not only provides fantastic export opportunities, but also the chance to grow local industries such as using clean ammonia for domestic fertiliser use. “Importantly, Government is partnering with industry, business and researchers to create new economic opportunities and new jobs. “We expect the future Australian hydrogen industry to directly support

more than 16,000 jobs by 2050, plus an additional 13,000 jobs from the construction of related renewable energy infrastructure.”

This means jobs in an emerging technology for Port Stephens locals.

The potential for growth in the Tomago industrial precinct is high with hydrogen being delivered alongside new battery technology in the region. “Australian hydrogen production for export and domestic use could also generate more than $50 billion in additional GDP by 2050. It’s a win-win.”

The Morrison Government released the National Hydrogen Strategy in 2019, which sets out a vision for Australia to become a major global hydrogen supplier by 2030. Producing clean hydrogen under $2 a kilogram (‘H2 under 2’) is a priority under the Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap, part of the long-term plan to reach net zero by 2050. The Government is investing more than $1.2 billion to accelerate the development of an Australian hydrogen industry, including $464 million to develop up to seven Clean Hydrogen Industrial Hubs in regional Australia. Hydrogen is a flexible, safe, transportable and storable

fuel that when used produces no carbon emissions. This sits alongside the NSW Governments commitment to attract more than $80 billion of investment, drive deep decarbonisation and establish itself as an energy and economic superpower with Monday's launch of the NSW Hydrogen Strategy. Premier Dominic Perrottet said as NSW worked through post-lockdown recovery, hydrogen was an opportunity to drive new investment and help secure jobs right across the State. “Australia has an opportunity to be an energy superpower, New South Wales will lead the country with this hydrogen strategy,” Mr Perrottet said. “Our major trading partners see hydrogen as part of their energy future, this state has the skills, infrastructure and renewable energy resources to compete globally in this new industry.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said hydrogen was a huge opportunity for regional NSW. “We know that regional economies are diversifying, and the NSW government’s Hydrogen Strategy is bringing that to life,” Mr Toole said.

THE Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) is holding a meet the candidates meeting on 15 November. The Forum will be held in the Nelson Room of the Nelson Bay Bowling Club. The Club will require participants and those attending to comply with all COVID restrictions which are applicable on 15 November. If the Covid situation changes significantly, TRRA would consider the alternatives of a full Webinar or Zoom format for this Forum. their response to the three questions (three minutes on each) and they will be given a one minute ‘right of reply’ on any issues raised which they wish to comment on. The formalities will be finalised with an open floor for questions from attendees.

The motion lapsed without a seconder and the Council voted to pass an additional fifteen minutes. The only notice of motion that was addressed at the meeting was the first motion, put forth by Councillor Ken Jordan regarding Port Stephens Koalas. Cr Arnott expressed his frustration at the situation. “If any Councillors move from here to go to dinner and wine instead of dealing with the Council business, then it is going to be one of the most distressing and frustrating things that’s happened in the life of this Council. “Council is here to discuss items and do their jobs - it’s a disgrace,” Cr Arnott concluded. Notices of motion regarding illegal dumping, roads, pathways, libraries and animals in the area were amongst eighteen motions which will now be transferred to the next term of Council.

Just before 8pm on 2 November, Port Stephens SES were tasked to assist with locating a missing twenty year old with autism in Medowie. The man and two other friends were kayaking, but only two returned. Port Stephens SES responded with multiple flood boats and eleven Operators, including two InWater Rescue Technicians. Resources from other local SES units were also called in to assist with the search. PolAir was able to spot the man from the air using a thermal imaging camera, who then guided the flood boats and In-Water Rescue Technicians to the location.

The Williamtown/Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade want to inform the community to save the date as Santa has informed the brigade that he will be borrowing the fire truck on 18 December 2021 to drive around the streets in the local brigade area.

It was a busy week for the Williamtown/ Salt Ash Brigade who were called to a car fire on the Stockton sand dunes on 1 November. The Brigade spent lunch time working to extinguish the blaze and want to thank members of the public who safely gave way to the responding vehicles.

DURING the Prime Minister's visit to Tomago this week the new Liberal candidate for Paterson was launched. The announcement of Brooke Vitnell’s candidacy was no surprise with the PM having been quizzed as to whether he would choose her as a “captains pick” at a media event earlier in the year. Now the Medowie based solicitor and local community advocate has been officially selected to contest the election. Ms Vitnell has pledged to put the people of Paterson first by tirelessly working to deliver a stronger community with more jobs and economic opportunities. AS the Local Government Elections approach, Labor Party candidates for Port Stephens have made promises to involve and listen to the community. With low scores in the recent community satisfaction survey, it’s clear that Port Stephens residents have high expectations for the nominated Council. Mayoral candidate Leah Anderson believes that this can be turned around, vowing to involve and listen to the Port Stephens community. “We’ve got three main pillars to work on and the environment is one of those. “I don't think the current Council has done anywhere near enough, or really focused

on it until right at the end, but both the environment and climate change are going to be things that we’re working on from the absolute beginning,” Ms Anderson said. “I’m no expert on it all, but I know our community has excellent groups and experts in the field that we should be bringing in to help us make decisions and policies. “For us, it’s about engaging with those in the community who may know more about these things and working together to make a change.” The community satisfaction survey showed that a major point of contention for the community is road maintenance, with many residents frustrated at the lack of action in regards to this.

Ms Anderson believes the key to solving these issues is looking at successful examples from other Councils to assist in implementing new strategies. “There's one example in Moreton Bay Council where they've got cameras on the front of the garbage trucks, so basically they’re proactively reporting back potholes and then the Council can actually see them and take action before the community has to drive in one and have an accident or damage their car,” Leah said. The Labor candidates are aiming to engage Port Stephens youth, believing that they should be involved with decisions about their future. “I’ve actually got two children in the youth age bracket and it’s so interesting because they’re coming along this journey with me and they’re now actually

IT’s no secret that businesses are struggling to fill roles in hospitality businesses. The Shoal Bay Country Club has a sign placed at the entry stating that they have 100 roles to fill. As the state opens up it is devastating to businesses if they are unable to trade simply because they cannot find the right staff. No PFAS solution from Williamtown SAP By Marian SAMPSON

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) has turned the lives of residents in the Red Zone the Airport at Williamtown into one of uncertainty, financial loss and fear. Prior to the 2019 state election, the NSW Liberal Government labelled the Williamtown Special Activation Precinct (SAP) a “positive permanent solution for the PFAS situation”. The Government claimed that the SAP would provide a framework for PFAS remediation and property buybacks. This gave hope; hope of a new life, hope of financial security and hope on the horizon rather than fear. However two and a half years later, hundreds of local residents have been informed that the promised SAP will extend nowhere near their properties. The 10,000 hectare ‘SAP investigation area’ has been reduced by 98 percent, to just 135 hectares. Just 10 percent of properties most affected by PFAS will likely fall into the new SAP boundaries. In an update to local residents, the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment said, “The Precinct will be much smaller than originally anticipated, and will focus on the area around Newcastle Airport and Williamtown RAAF Base.” Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “The Liberals promised a ‘positive permanent solution for PFAS’, but in reality, this is not

positive, it’s not permanent, and it’s nowhere near a solution. “The SAP was never going to solve the PFAS situation, so I will never understand why the Liberal Party made that promise. “To be honest, I think these families’ lives were used by the Government for shameless electioneering because they had nothing else to say about the PFAS issue. “Labor promised a suite of policies to begin removing PFAS from the local drains, and all the Liberal Party could point to was the SAP. “Well, now we know that the SAP has nothing to do with fixing PFAS contamination. “So after six long years, residents are still no better off,” she said. It is not all bad news for the wider community with Washington recognising that the SAP represents a great opportunity for the community. “I have supported it 100% because it should create local jobs, industry and help transform our local economy. “But the Government lied to our community. “They tried to say this project would help local families affected by PFAS contamination. “It won’t. “It was never going to. “This has been a cruel hoax, and I’m heartbroken for these local families,” she said. A spokesperson for the Department of Regional NSW told News Of The Area, “Investigations into a Williamtown Special Activation Precinct were announced by the former

Deputy Premier in May 2020. “The vision for a Williamtown precinct will capitalise on the defence and aerospace industries to create up to 4,300 jobs for the region. “Investigations into the Williamtown precinct have been taking place as part of the usual master planning phase, where a range of technical studies are conducted, and boundary options are considered. “A team of expert planners, engineers, economists and environmental professionals, amongst others, are working together to constantly refine and evolve key matters to inform the boundary, such as environmental and flooding and drainage solutions, potential land uses and longterm economic viability, which all form part of a draft master plan. “The investigation area for a Williamtown precinct initially covered 10,000 hectares within the Port Stephens Local Government Area, including the suburbs of Salt Ash, Tomago, Campvale and Fullerton Cove. “As work progressed, this area was refined and residents in these locations were advised that they would not be included in the Williamtown precinct. “In face-to-face sessions with the community in December 2020, we informed residents that despite the large investigation area, the precinct was likely to comprise a smaller parcel of land, based on market and economic demand, including environmental factors. “As the State Government has previously acknowledged,

Sometimes, it’s hard to know whether to cringe or be thrilled by another series based on a great book. Normal People recently proved how expertly the tricky adaptation process can be done, but the jury’s out on this reworking of Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed book in which racism is inversed. The premise of an alternate world where Europe has been colonised by black people is arresting. In this second instalment, Callum (Jack Rowan) and Sephy (Masali Baduza, pictured) are desperate to be alone together.

If you think getting a pet is as simple as waltzing into a pet shop or local RSPCA and pointing at the dog you fancy through a window, or simply paying a breeder and rocking up six weeks after the due date to pick up your furry friend, you’d be wrong. If The Dog House Australia is anything to go by, acquiring a pet involves a meeting of minds – and that isn’t a bad thing at all. Anyone watching this heartwarming series is reminded how important choosing the right pet is for a fruitful and affectionate relationship. Operation Rural Roads

OFFICERS from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, including Traffic and Highway Patrol, conducted Operation Rural Roads between 7am and 5pm on Wednesday 3 November 2021. Operation Rural Roads was focused on reducing road trauma, with officers maintaining a high visibility presence throughout Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula, Tanilba Bay and Salt Ash. “The community can expect to see police patrolling the roads across the district, taking a zero-tolerance approach for driving that endangers lives or breaks the law. “As the roads get busier again with regional travel now allowed state-wide, we are asking everyone to exercise patience and take extra care to keep our roads safe,” said Commander Chad Gillies. During the operation, police conducted over nine hundred tests across the district, including 54 mobile breath tests and 839 stationary breath tests. A 32-year-old man was issued an infringement notice for driving with low

range PCA, and his licence was suspended. Almost 40 random drug tests were conducted, with three people allegedly returning positive results, which have been sent for secondary examination. A further twenty drivers were issued infringement notices for the offences of speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt and licencerelated offences. Five searches were conducted, with a 28-year-old man issued a Court Attendance Notice for allegedly possessing a prohibited drug and knives in a public place. Port Stephens-Hunter Police District Commander Chad Gillies said operations like this will continue throughout the remainder of the year. “This summer, make sure you’re doing the right thing or you will also have your license suspended and end up before the courts. “Unfortunately, we keep having to push this message as a small element of people still want to risk not only their lives, but the lives of others,” Commander Gillies said.

New playground to Raymond Terrace

THERE will soon be a new place to play in Raymond Terrace, with works now underway on a new playground and accessible public amenities at Bettles Park. Port Stephens Council is undertaking the works thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the $280,000 grant will provide a new and improved play space for our community at the southern gateway to Raymond Terrace. “It’s wonderful to see even more places to play for our growing community of Raymond Terrace and visitors to our area. “The playground design has been decided by our community and extensive engagement based on the NSW Government’s ‘Everyone Can Play’ guidelines. “We heard our community wanted a playground to suit a range of ages and abilities. “This will help improve accessibility and inclusivity for young families in Raymond Terrace and surrounding areas. “Bettles Park is a highly visible reserve at the southern gateway to Raymond Terrace. “It was once a very popular highway stop

before Raymond Terrace was bypassed and used to house the Sabre Jet, which is now on display nearby at Fighter World. “I hope these improvements to Bettles Park with new play infrastructure and accessible public amenities will continue to support residents and visitors into the future,” he said. Strategy & Environment Section Manager Brock Lamont said the new recreational space supports Council’s objectives to create inclusive and accessible spaces. “All of our recent amenities and recreational upgrades across Port Stephens focus on accessibility and inclusivity for the community. “The Bettles Park design meets these objectives and looks at play spaces as precincts that are supported by pathways, seating and shade in an accessible way,” he said. You just took me back to a childhood affliction I had for several years which manifested as a stomach ache, but was actually a chronic need to stay home and be doted on by my nanna. This was a carefully orchestrated illness with symptoms commencing the night before. I would leave a few mouthfuls of my dinner and say I didn't feel great. This was a master stroke as it meant I could go to my room and read instead of doing the dishes. Halfway through the night, I'd go into my parents' room and say I felt like I needed to vomit. I'd then go to the bathroom and make retching sounds, planting further seeds of doubt into the mind of my fatigued mum. In the morning, I'd feign stomach pains, which was normally enough, but if she suggested taking my temperature, I'd ask to do it in the bathroom as I was feeling queasy, and then I'd run the thermometer under the hot water tap. Then I'd be delivered to my nanna's house on Mum's way to work where I'd make a miraculous recovery by about 10am. COVID is a whole new ball game. Not just for kids, I suspect, but for anyone who doesn't want to go to their workplace. The whole 'soldier on' concept has been replaced by a need to stay home with the slightest symptom and the only punishment is a Q-tip up the nose. Life has never been better, except for those of us who already work from home and are now surrounded by kids and partners, who happen to make the worst work colleagues ever. Perhaps make your home environment less inviting. You could do up a jobs list with unappealing tasks or become one of those irritating homeschooling experts, so manically enthusiastic about their dodgy attempts at the curriculum, that little Karl and Trinity can't wait to return to school. Two men charged following shooting death By Tara CAMPBELL

TWO men have been charged over their alleged involvement in a fatal shooting in Port Stephens in August this year. About 1.45pm on Sunday 29 August 2021, emergency services were called to Hideaway Drive, Salt Ash, following reports a white Ford Ranger utility had hit a tree. Officers from Port

Stephens-Hunter Police District attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics and located a male driver suffering a fatal gunshot wound. He was later identified as 45-year-old David King. A short time later, officers located a burnt-out white Santa Fe located on Masonite Road, Heatherbrae, which police believe is allegedly

linked to the shooting. Detectives established Strike Force Breve to investigate the incident, with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. “Early investigations indicate that a male with a firearm left [the ute] and, nearby, a white Santa Fe was seen to collect that person with other people and drive from that location,” Port Stephens-

Hunter Police District Commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said at the time. Following investigations, at approximately 11.30am on Friday 5 November 2021, police stopped a vehicle travelling along Wahroonga Street, Raymond Terrace. The driver, a 27-year-old man, was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station.

IT’S time for the weekly police update for Port Stephens. Operation Chrome In the last week, officers from the Port StephensHunter Police District together with Highway Patrol conducted Operation Chrome, a high visibility operation across roads in the district. Five people were detected with alcohol in their system: one with high range and four with mid-range. All five drivers had their license suspended and will now face their local courts. District Commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said that these results prove why these operations take place. “Although most people do the right thing, that's five too many and it's still a danger

on our roads, that’s why we complete these operations, to remind people that this behaviour is an unacceptable risk to not only themselves, but others too,” Commander Gillies said. Melbourne Cup There were a number of incidents in the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District on Melbourne Cup day, particularly around local hotels in the area. One individual was issued with a Fail To Quit notice and $550 fine. Two other males were issued separate move along directions by police for antisocial behaviour. Council purchases key 7.6 hectare Medowie site q Medowie community champions at 38 Ferodale Road, Medowie – Council's new land purchase.

PORT Stephens Council has confirmed the purchase of land that it says will future proof Medowie and drive investment to cater for planned growth over the next 20 years. Covering a total of 7.6 hectares, the key site identified in the 2016 Medowie Planning Strategy is located at 38 Ferodale Road, Medowie. Port Stephens Council General Manager Wayne Wallis said the purchase of this property is a critical step in the ongoing development of Medowie. “We know that having a well-planned town centre and high quality recreation facilities is a key priority for the Medowie community,”

Mr Wallis said. “This is an ideal location opposite Coles and Woolworths and the new development will include a mix of recreation facilities, open space and residential housing. “This purchase of the site will be a catalyst for new development and growth in Medowie providing opportunity for better connectivity between housing and recreational facilities. "With the development of this land, we will be able to host more events in the area and look forward to a large scale regional playground," he added. Council is working with residents and businesses

Marlins Amalgamate For A Stronger Club By Marian SAMPSON

THE Marlins have amalgamated to create a football club that allows for easier transition from juniors to reserve grade. On 30 October the Nelson Bay Marlins junior and senior clubs held a joint AGM where it was decided after 21 years apart, the junior and senior clubs would amalgamate. Joshua Horvath, the new Nelson Bay Marlins AFC President, told News Of The Area, “I was voted in as President. “This comes after serving as president the past three years of the junior club.” Joshua will now oversee the amalgamation. Shane Roche was voted in as Vice President. “The split between the clubs happened in 2000, and there was no real answer as to why.

“It has been my goal for the past three years to once again become one club. “Being one club enables a much easier pathway for our under 17's to transition into reserve grade and first grade in both men's and women's. “When it comes from a club standpoint it makes it a lot easier when working with the AFL, Council, coaches and the Marlins family, to just be one committee and one club.” In becoming one club once again, the men and women will work with the younger age groups to help develop their skills and instill a good strong football culture. “In coming together as one club it is my goal to bring home both a men's and women's premiership in the next three years, and to continue our juniors dominance. “One club, one goal stronger together,” Joshua said.

Adored Poppy of THOMAS, EMMA, HOLLY, JOCELYN and LUCAS. A great family man and friend. Family and friends are warmly invited to the Service at St Stephen’s Catholic Church, Witt St, Tea Gardens on FRIDAY 12th November 2021 at 12pm. Cricket Club By Tara CAMPBELL NELSON Bay Junior Cricket Club will share in $10,000 worth of grant funding made available as part of the Toyo Tires Sixers Community Grant program. An initiative of the Sydney Sixers and Toyo Tires, the club who plays in the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association will receive a $1,000 grant to purchase new Woolworths Cricket Blast equipment.
