PRIME Minister Scott Morrison returned to Port Stephens in the Hunter making this his third visit to the region in recent times. The Prime Minister took the time to visit Energy Renaissance’s new site at Tomago where a $28 million plant is about to be built. Once operational the facility will produce lithium batteries. Energy Renaissance has been working in partnership with the University of Newcastle and the CSIRO on the development of the technology which will be used at the plant. The facility is expected to be completed in October of 2021.

During the visit the Prime Minister launched the Federal Government’s resource roadmap. The Prime Minister Scott Morrison told News Of The Area, “In the Hunter, they're building the future; on this site with lithium-ion batteries. “When I think of all the regions of our country, it's very hard to consider a region that will benefit more from the economic policies we're putting in place than the Hunter.” For some time now, the Australian government has been working internationally through partnerships, on ways that Australia can be a part of the supply chains for critical minerals and rare earths. “It has been a keen topic of our national-level discussions.

“It is a sovereign and strategic priority for Australia to ensure that we are hard-wired into this supply chain around the world. “Because these rare earths and critical minerals are what literally pulls together the technology that we will be relying on into the future,” said the Prime Minister. Karen Andrews Minister for Industry, Science and Technology said, “What we have determined are that there are some priorities for manufacturing here in Australia where we have comparative or competitive strengths. “Today is the opening of funding for resources technology and critical minerals processing.” She announced two streams of funding; one which funds the commercialisation of good ideas and the other supports businesses q Prime Minister Scott Morrison with the Lithium batteries. IT is not uncommon in Port Stephens to find dead or injured turtles wallowing in the shallows or dead on the sands. Indeed, with increasing use of the waterways by recreational fishermen and boaties, between five and ten of these creatures fall victim to propeller strikes each year. They were also drowned by becoming enmeshed in ‘witches hats’ crab traps before they were banned. There are three distinct types of turtles which frequent the waters of the Port Stephens and Greater Lakes Marine Park. These are the green turtle, the hawksbill and the loggerhead. What's more they are tagged and radio tracked. They even have individual names, such as 'Crabby,' 'Jodie,' 'Lucy,' and 'Max'. Long time local Mike Colecliffe, a sailor and Marina Manager, sees quite a few. “Years ago I found a dead one on Bull Island but I think it died

LIKE many sporting clubs in NSW, Nelson Bay Croquet Club took advantage of the NSW State Government’s Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program which enabled the Club to purchase and instal an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in 2019. The installation of the defibrillator was accompanied by training in the use of the AED and in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). While understanding how important this was in meeting the Club’s duty of care to members, the then Management Committee decided that the CPR training should be complemented by more general first aid training

such that members could be assured of assistance in the event of other medical issues and accidents while playing croquet at the Nelson Bay courts. With assistance from a Federal Government Volunteer Grant, the Club is providing certified first aid training to 15 members of the Management Committee, Day Captains and coaches. The first aid course offered by Tomaree Community College comprises an online learning component which is followed by a one day, faceto-face practical session. Both components require 100% pass rate before certification is approved. The members who have completed the training to date are: Rob Batho, Trevor

job,“ she mused. “You could ring him at any hour of the day or night and he'd be on the spot immediately for serious offences,” she said. “One officer was even known to turn up to a crime scene in his pyjamas with his gun!” she added. Doreen said this changed when a new commissioner centralized control of local police operations in Maitland. “If our local officer received an emergency call at night, he would phone Maitland to 'clock on' and was told not to respond as the incident would be 'prioritised’. “This meant that a couple of officers would arrive a day or so later. “The system just collapsed with crime running rampant,” she said. Doreen said her community came together to try and improve policing in the local area, in response to a perceived drop in standards. “This community ran a

relentless campaign to get policing back on track and it worked,” she said. ”We started our own 'buy a cop' initiative which went viral nationwide in the media and 'A Current Affair' was in town twice. “We also conducted a very effective Crime Forum,” she added. “These actions put pressure on the Minister and the Commissioner to the extent that the new Port Stephens Command was established and things improved,” she asserted. It was then that talk began of the development of a new police station in Tanilba Bay. “The overwhelming push out this way was to see a new station built in q

A huge problem has been created by those responsible for the logistics and administration,” he added.

Man arrested and charged on outstanding warrants POLICE have arrested and charged a man on outstanding warrants with serious domestic violence-related offences and firearms offences in Raymond Terrace today. About 5.30am on Sunday 7 March 2021, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were called to Truscott Street, Raymond Terrace, after reports a man was attempting to gain access to a home. Following inquiries, the officers established the 29-year-old man was wanted on four outstanding arrest warrants for offences relating to domestic

violence and firearms offences, and a revocation of parole. By the time police arrived at the scene, the man had gained access to the home. A 26-year-old woman, who is the occupant of the property and known to the man, was also inside. Upon seeing police, the man attempted to flee the home through a roof cavity and was stopped by officers. He was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. A New Medowie CBD Is Just 7 Days Away

ANNA Bay was Port Stephens first host of a 7 Day Makeover and now it is Medowie’s turn. The benefits of the 7 Day Makeover at Anna Bay are as clear as the sign that spells out the communities pride in the township. The volunteerism was huge at Anna Bay; businesses and community groups are continuing on with donations of time, tools and expertise across the township and public spaces. Medowie is now in line to be transformed by this community-driven initiative from 8 to 14 May 2021. The brainchild of David Engwicht from Creative Communities, the 7 Day Makeover empowers communities to improve their places and spaces. Creative Communities aim to empower communities to continue to create vibrant spaces that are lived in and are interactive. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “The 7 Day Makeover is all about creating places where people want to spend their time and their money. “That fits perfectly with our Council’s focus on improving the liveability of our town centres and enabling our communities to own and drive the growth of their place.” “Port Stephens Council is proud to be partnering with Creative Communities again to bring the 7 Day Makeover to Medowie and I’d encourage all of our community and local businesses to get involved however you can.” Local resident and makeover advocate Councillor Chris Doohan says it’s time for Medowie to take on the challenge. “We are a proud town that is growing rapidly. “Now is a chance for some of the older and newer residents to meet and work together to help make our town centre something we can be proud of, and continue to energise and promote our strong community spirit,” Cr Doohan said. The Seven Day MakeOver in Anna Bay broke the Creative Communities record for the most number of volunteers to ever take part in a 7 Day Makeover. “It doesn’t matter about skill level or ability — there are important roles for absolutely everyone. “It’s all about working together to make Medowie a better place,” he said. Creative Communities Director and internationally renowned placemaker David Engwicht said he’s excited to be back in Port Stephens. “Anna Bay was one of the highlights of the

Local businesswoman Brooke Vitnell has established an office in Medowie in the last 14 months, she told News Of The Area, “I welcome the 7 day makeover as this project will be driven by the Medowie community for the benefit of the Medowie community.” “In our CBD there is no where appropriate for people to congregate or to meet, I

welcome any proposals that make our CBD a more harmonious and user friendly place,” she said. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the workshops where the community will identify its priorities for Medowie. An information night with a presentation by David Engwicht will be held at the Medowie Community Centre on 13 April at 6.30pm, with the makeover scheduled for early May.

History Repeats Itself By Geoff WALKER

TO commemorate the sesquicentenary of the landing of Lieutenant William. Caswell, a reenactment and gala day was held on the foreshore at Tanilba Bay in 1981. A large sailing boat hove to and a landing party was rowed ashore to be greeted by local natives. The Union Jack was raised, a cake cut and a commemorative stone unveiled. It was later set in the central gateway column at the main road intersection. Those present were then taken on a walk around the perimeter of the historic homestead but were not permitted inside the grounds as it was privately leased at the time. A great day was had by all. Indigenous people have been reported as being positive during colonial times. Indeed the recently published 'History and Heritage of Tanilba House' (2019) states that, 'The Worimi and Lt. Caswell's family certainly had respect for one another and a peaceful co-existence and inter-cultural exchange developed between them which saw the Aboriginal people undertaking seasonal work for rations and tobacco alongside convicts, and, also sharing knowledge.' at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters at the Corner of Port Stephens Drive and Nelson Bay Rd at Anna Bay. Sea Shelter works with Taronga Zoo and other wildlife rescue organisations to save turtles and other animals that

need care and rehabilitation before they can be released back into the wild. A baby turtle was recently recovered on a local beach. Unfortunately this young turtle did not survive, however if rescued turtles are placed into suitable care quickly they stand a better chance of long term survival and

reintroduction into the wild. Worldwide, six of the seven sea turtle species are classified as threatened or endangered, due to the actions of humans. According to NPWS Ranger Keely Markovina, marine turtles are a threatened species and it is important to protect them, as they are very vulnerable and should not be disturbed. “Marine turtles face many threats, including beach erosion, artificial lighting and climate change and these issues could also affect nesting patterns. “We believe NSW beaches will become increasingly important for turtle nesting if sand, sea and air temperatures continue to rise, as our climate

is cooler than in QLD where there is a higher amount of turtle activity than here.” The National Parks and Wildlife Service is urging people to report sightings of turtle tracks, hatchlings and dead or injured turtles to the local NPWS office as soon as they see anything. “Don’t disturb a nesting turtle, be careful where you walk and remember that dogs are not permitted on beaches in national parks,” Miss Markovina said. “It’s also important to dispose of litter, plastic and fishing line properly as turtles can become entangled or eat plastic rubbish washed into the sea.” Balloons released into the

atmosphere also form a deadly hazard for turtles and we are encouraged not to release balloons. Lia Periera Founder of Sea Shelter told News Of The Area, “It’s our mission to save as many as we can, so if you see any turtles in the wild that need our help please get in touch. “They are a keystone species just like sharks and rays, they help keep our oceans healthy. “You can do your bit by taking your used fishing lines and nets away to dispose of responsibly, reduce your plastic waste and keep nesting beaches clean and clear for turtles to lay their eggs,” she said.

Honouring Sgt Geoffrey Richardson THE life and service of Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson was honoured on Friday, as the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District dedicated its multipurpose training room in his honour. Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson from the Port Stephens Local Area Command was killed when the police car he was driving crashed into a tree on Lovedale Road, Allandale, around 11.50pm on Saturday 5 March 2016. At the time, Sergeant Richardson had been driving to assist colleagues who were engaged in a pursuit. He was the only person in the car at the time of the crash. Sergeant Richardson graduated from the NSW Police Academy in 1998, serving at Campbelltown Local Area Command as a Constable until 2005. During his 18-year policing career, he served at Cobar, Central Hunter and Lake Macquarie, before returning to the Port Stephens Local Area Command in 2015. Sergeant Richardson was the recipient of numerous awards, q

including a Region Commander’s Commendation for Bravery, and a posthumous Commissioner’s Commendation for Service. On the fifth anniversary of his passing, Sergeant Richardson has been remembered by his final command, with the station’s multipurpose training room at Raymond Terrace Police Station being dedicated in his name. Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys APM joined Northern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell APM, Port StephensHunter PD Commander, Detective Superintendent Chad Gillies, and Sergeant Richardson’s family and loved ones for a dedication ceremony on Friday 5 March 2021. Public speaking is often ranked as one of the biggest fears we can imagine, but for most of us in daily life, standing up and talking in front of large groups of people is not a regular occurence, so we can get on just fine. But for a surprisingly large portion of society, small group interactions – even just one-on-one – can be equally as terrifying and debilitating. Comedian Rhod Gilbert is no stranger to the stage, but it masks his crippling social anxiety and shyness that is no laughing matter. Here, he attempts to get to the bottom of what makes him so shy in the first place and what the experts suggest can be done to reduce its impact.

Kind of like the <i>Doctor Who</i> of detective series, we get a new DI every few seasons of <i>Death in Paradise</i>, which keeps this entertaining and not-toogruesome British comedycrime drama ticking along just nicely. In series nine, DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) has landed on the island of Saint Marie, but his debilitating allergies, creepycrawly phobias and general neurosis has meant this plum job in paradise is more of a living nightmare for him. Luckily, there is always plenty of work to keep him busy. Tonight, Parker and the team investigate after the leader of a survival training course is found dead in the remote forest of a neighbouring island.

Shark caught off the coast of Sydney. Caught by Captain Paul Barning from the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club on the boat ‘Dark Horse’, the fisherman spent over 45 minutes attempting to pull the shark onto the boat.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced the NSW Government had approved an exploration licence to identify suitable offshore sand for renourishment. The work off the coast of Newcastle is set to occur in the coming weeks as part of a longterm plan to permit offshore dredging to secure sand for Stockton Beach. Newcastle Council is working on developing their coastal management programs and programs to help to shape future plans to enhance the coast including the management of Stockton Beach. Newcastle City Council has launched The Love Our Coast

On the topic Climate Change, the environment and the Brandy Hill Quarry project which is endangering koalas; the sensitive nature of the environment locally as well as the vulnerable dingo population at Hawks Nest the Prime Minister told News Of The Area, “I read recently a book, a friend of mine sent me a book by David Attenborough. “I don't know if you've read it. “I'd encourage people to read it - I think it's a very interesting read. “And he makes a very important point. “As serious as issues around climate change and these things are, he points out that, at the end of the day, what survey, which will collect a range of information including what beaches people visit and how frequently, what they do while they are there and why they choose the beaches they do. It will also investigate how people get to the beach and how much money they spend during their trips. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the survey is key to identifying priorities and plans for the coastline moving forward. “The responses from this survey will help us develop plans and

DEVELOPING future leaders is important to the community and it is something that the Raymond Terrace Lions Club have been supporting through their Youth of the Year Quest. The Quest is always well supported and is a project that the Raymond Terrace Lions are passionate about. Recently the Lions held their Youth of the Year Final for Year 11-12 Students with students from both Hunter River High and Irrawang High School participating in the quest. Neil Goldthorpe of the Raymond Terrace Lions Club told News Of The Area, “This Quest is for students who are in the Senior Years 11/12 High School and are open to judging on personal, academic, sporting and cultural areas as

Medowie To Lose Only Bank IN what is seen as a step backwards by local community members the Newcastle Permanent branch in Medowie is set to close. Medowie is a growing township which without the Newcastle Permanent will not have a financial institution, with the nearest banks and building societies located at Raymond Terrace, Stockton or Nelson Bay. Community groups like Medowie Lions moved their banking to the Newcastle Permanent when it came to Medowie, now they are unsure about where they will be travelling to, to conduct their business. There are also concerns for locals that the Newcastle Permanent ATM is the only financial institution ATM in the area, and non financial institution ATM’s are charging high fees for people to access their cash. Brooke Vitnell is a solicitor and local business woman who says that the branch will be missed by the community. “Some non institution ATM’s charge over $3.00 per transaction and that can add up.” While COVID-19 has seen a move away from cash there

PORT Stephens Women in Business (PSWIB) is all about supporting women who own and operate their own businesses. The group held a meeting at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters with 40 local businesswomen in attendance. Fiona Brown President of Port Stephens Women In Business told News Of The Area, “Lia Pereira, owner of Irukandji spoke about how their business began, the great services they currently offer to benefit

our sea creatures and local environment, plus their amazing plans for expansion over the coming years.” A highlight of the meeting was being given the opportunity to wade knee deep into the pools and feed the rays and small sharks, as well as feed rays and eels in the tanks. “The women in attendance really loved the experience.” Guest speaker at the event was 2020 Port Stephens Citizen of the Year and Founder of Plastic Free Port Stephens (PFPS), Alicia Cameron, who spoke to the

STOCKTON and Northern District Cricket Club started Round 13 started with high hopes and at the halfway point of the round there is a club championship still on the line and semi final spots in three of the four grades. In first grade at Bernie Curran Oval, skipper Nick Foster won the toss and elected to bowl after a delayed start. University battled their way to 161 lead by a fine 75 from their skipper Andrew Harriot but the star of the show was Stockton youngster Jared Humphries who took an impressive 7 for 22 from 11.4 overs. In response the Seagulls lost a flurry of late wickets to be 5 for 72 with all to play for the coming weekend. At Lynn Oval, the ladder leading second grade team continued to dominate all comers having claimed first innings points by the end of day one.
