THE Australian Defence Force and many locally based aerospace businesses celebrated as the first F-35 Joint Strike Fighter arrived at BAE Systems Williamtown facility in Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison was on hand at BAE Systems with the Minister for Defence the Hon Linda Reynolds, Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price, Chief of Air Force Air Marshall Mel Hupfeld and BAE Systems CEO Gabby Costigan. BAE Systems is the Southern Pacific regions F-35 Heavy Airframe Depot supporting the F-35 aircraft in the region for the next 30 years. 32 highly skilled technicians have been recruited to provide airframe maintenance and sustainment for the depot. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “Australia must always, must always be prepared, always looking to the future to be prepared. “We are here today to mark a milestone, one which is about keeping Australia safe.” The Prime Minister noted that this year we will

Firearm and drugs seized in Raymond Terrace

A MAN has been charged after police seized a firearm and drugs following a pursuit in Raymond Terrace yesterday. About 3.15am, Saturday 6 February 2021, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were

conducting routine patrols on Tathra Street, Raymond Terrace, when they attempted to stop a Toyota Kluger for the purposes of a random breath test. When it allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit commenced. It’s alleged the

Club Lemon Tree’s donation is one of many, with the community banding together to support this centre. Former Port Stephens mayor Bruce MacKenzie has donated a shop in the

pursuit. Following a search of the vehicle, police seized a handgun, methylamphetamine and cannabis. No one was injured. Club President, Kevin Colman, told News Of The Area, “It (The Jupiter Centre) is something that the club is incredibly passionate about. “We’ve had a few services like this in the area to support local youth, but nothing ongoing.” With no facility in

Bob Royal, who has since passed away, started the fishing competition as a way to get children out of the house and onto the water, rather than sitting inside on devices, organiser and Lions Club member Dirk Kopcsandy explained. The annual fishing competition is his legacy to the community. Fewer participants entered the competition this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the date change, however this

did not spoil fundraising efforts. With counting yet to be finalised, $2411 has been raised so far to establish a free counselling service for young people aged 10-19 years at the Koorindah Centre in Tanilba Bay, which is nearing completion. This service is expected to commence in early February. Mr Kopcsandy stated that the competition was a good day, despite the reduction in participant numbers. “Hopefully it will be bigger and better next year,” he said.

IN true summer style, a day of fishing proved to be an enjoyable way to get out into the sunshine. Raising muchneeded funds for a community service added a whole new layer of good summer vibes to a pleasant day out on the water. The annual Bob Royal Fishing Competition, hosted by Tilligerry Peninsula Lions Club, went ahead on 23 and 24 January, a change from the usual mid-January dates in previous years.

Love is in the air By Tara CAMPBELL AS Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, it’s time to showcase some feel-good love stories from Port Stephens. There’s love in the air, and if the last year has shown us anything, it’s that we need to hold on to the things we love now more than anything. Here’s some of my favourite love stories from the area. Tilligerry Habitat Helping Tradies and Koalas By Growing Trees and when the seedlings are big enough they are transferred to small tubes and grown until they are ready for sale. Through collection of local seeds within the Tilligerry Habitat for the program, local endemic species are being propagated. “We have a license to gather and grow seeds from certain native plants as part of our plan of management for Tilligerry Habitat.” The trees are only sold when they reach 1.5m in height. It takes several seasons to raise such large trees. Ian believes that it is well worth your while to visit Tilligerry Habitat. “We have very beautiful

THE team at Tilligerry Habitat are busy growing trees. Trees that are not only feeding our koalas but also helping tradies to meet our Councils requirements for their job sites. Ian Rabbitt from Tilligerry Habitat told News Of The Area, “The money we earn from selling the trees helps fund the habitat and goes towards path and site maintenance. “The money also helps us to fund our free schools programs.” Volunteers grow the trees from seed gathered from within the Tilligerry Habitat. These seeds once collected are placed in trays

and loving every minute of it. “We couldn’t be happier, we have so much in common and can always be completely ourselves when we’re together.”

Pensioners Free Petrol REMEMBER the free travel card seniors were given last year? Well dear reader, you can get another one for 2021. Those eligble are aged pensioners and holders of Commonwealth Seniors Health Cards. It also applies to some categories of veterans. It is not available to

those living in the greater areas of Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle. Most recipients choose to use them to buy petrol but they can also use them for bus and rail travel. Individuals get a debit card for $250. This means $500 courtesy of our State Government for a married couple.

You can check your balance over the phone. Just ring 13 77 88 and all will be reveled. A new card will arrive in the mail a couple of weeks later, it then has to be activated before use. Oh! Have your old card and pensioner or seniors' card details on hand to apply.

MHERV Free Health Checks - Saving Men’s Lives By Marian SAMPSON THE mherv van is a Men’s Health Education Rural Van which has proven itself to be a rural life-saver. Mherv is a Rotary health project delivered in a purpose built caravan. The project has attracted State Government funding however it is primarily funded by Rotary and the communities which it visits, with hotels and motels assisting with meals and accommodation. The ‘mherv’ accommodates a registered nurse, assisted by local community nurses, who run some simple health tests for rural men who are notorious for not finding time to see their GP for check-ups.

The mherv has been visiting rural centres since 2008 especially way out west but they do cover areas like Port Stephens and the mid north coast as well. The van travels around the state conducting much needed testing, the project will be continuously hosted by the many Rotary clubs in the local areas. Funded by initiatives like the Bunnings BBQ’s, Rotary will be doing these mherv health tests without charge. There are constant outgoings for this life saving service. The Rotary message is simple, “Whether you’re a farmer, a miner, a footy fan, a valued rural resident, or a local publican, if you are one of those blokes who hasn’t seen your GP for a check-up in ages, ‘man-up’ and get checked!” The epic 2021 journey is already underway for mherv - it will take in 36 stops over

IT was with the ringing of bells, cleansing ceremonial smoke and the benevolent smile of its patron’s statue that a new school opened its doors. Catherine MacAuley Catholic College was at last able to welcome the first of its students on Wednesday. The 180 year seven students and 90 year eight students will be the first to learn at the state-of-the-art campus. Schools are usually old places where new students try to fit in with. CMCC however is shiny and new. The simple message of

GLENN Forest is a local from the Lemon Tree Passage area who got into a terrible truck accident just over two and a half years ago. Before his accident, he was a truck driver, motorcycle fan and had been building pontoon boats for over ten years. Unfortunately, after his accident he was paralysed from the chest down and became a quadriplegic. Over the past twelve months, one of Glenn’s closest friends, Glen Shankley began working on a wheelchair accessible pontoon that would allow Glenn to get out on the water again.

Restart Port Stephens TO help restart Port Stephens and support the community through the effects of COVID-19, applications for round 2 of our community funding program are now open. Since launching the funding in July last year, we’ve seen some amazing initiatives get up and running including Summer on Magnus Street, the Tomaree Museum Pop Up Shop and a range of murals across our community. We’re now on the hunt for our second round of grant applicants to help restart Port Stephens and make it an even more vibrant and supportive place to live. Grants are open for the Vibrant Spaces Fund, Community Event Development Fund and Community Support Fund — whether you want to hold an event, paint a mural, activate a space, beautify a place or do anything that adds vibrancy to our streets. There really is something for everyone. As long as your idea can benefit our local community, I would encourage you to get in touch and see what’s on offer. It’s simple to apply and our team is here to help you through the process — if you or someone you know has a great idea they’d like to see turn into a reality make sure to apply. Don’t forget, if you have a smaller project, our My Incredible Place Micro Grants offer $500 year-round for artistic and creative ideas that connect our community and improve the visitor experience. The Vibrant Spaces Fund, Community Event Development Fund and Community Support Funds are now open and close 14 March 2021. Probus Club BBQ

members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club decided that they could do pretty well anything by themselves. “So the recent decision was to hold a DIY event: a barbecue to make the most of wonderful weather.” These events tend to be casual with a BYO choice of drink and BYO mains. “For those still hankering for a hot steak or sausage (or both) Roy Jeffery was on hand to help. “There were plenty of nibbles to enjoy, crisp salads and other family favourites. “And (naturally) a lot of fun and friendship to enjoy,” she said. The Fingal Bay Probus Club meets at 9.30am on the second Monday of each month at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. New members and visitors are welcome to learn more about the club and its activities that include wine and dine evenings, walking for pleasure, comfortably casual morning meetings, wine appreciation time and a variety of guest speakers. Karuah’s Rowing and Aquatic Club Offers to compete at a regatta in Rowing As A Competitive Sport set February at the Endeavour ROWING is a perfect sport for those living on and around the rivers and bays of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast, with Karuah now boasting its own rowing club. The Karuah Rowing and Aquatic Club Inc. was started in 2020. John Baskett, an accredited rowing coach with years of experience, started the club in 2019. John and his father coached for the Nepean Rowing Club for many years and were successful in coaching teams to the Olympics, World and Australian Titles. John is passionate about rowing and hopes to attract people of all ages over the age of 12 to the sport in the Port Stephens area.

He has been instrumental in acquiring boats and gym equipment for training. John Baskett told News Of The Area, “The Club will be making it easier for members from Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point, Tanilba Bay and Lemon Tree Passage areas to gain access.” The club is looking at having members picked up by qualified water taxi from these areas to train at North Arm Cove and then returned to their wharf. The club is based at Karuah which is an easy 15 minute drive from Medowie. Training is held at North Arm Cove and even at Tea Gardens. Rowing is an Olympic, Australian Championship and World Championship sport and is available for anyone over 12 years to 100 (and over if you are fit). “It is only $30 per year for membership and this allows you the use of the equipment, which includes gym equipment, under qualified supervision.” The Club had a setback earlier last year with the Corona Virus impacting on training sessions but is now up and running and looking for young and mature members to “give it go”. John can coach to competition level and one Club member, Craig Butler, is

Rowing Club regatta at Duckenfield. Rowing is an individual or team sport where you and your friends can row together or alone. You can row for fitness, competitiveness or just the thrill of being on the water and amongst nature. In the past two months, the rowers at North Arm Cove have encountered two different species of turtles, dolphins, sea lions, (21) black swans and a white chested sea eagle. The rowing club intends to maintain a good relationship with the Dept. of Fisheries and Maritime Services Dept. to help protect the native species and environment, so rowing can be enjoyed for many years to come in the Port Stephens area. The Karuah Rowing and Aquatic Club had its first AGM recently with the election of six local people as committee members, volunteering their time to keep this sport available to the people of the Port Stephens area. There were two awards handed out at the AGM, with the Clubman of the Year Award going to Victoria Prisk and the Inaugural Rower of the Year award to Craig Butler. Comedians Becky Lucas and Nazeem Hussain will join Hughesy each week to share the burden and help guests near and far sort out life’s little conundrums. The season premiere last week set the bar for some epic guest stars, with Tiger King’s Carole Baskin and Hollywood enigma Gary Busey Zooming in with their dilemmas. Karuah Triplets Take the Next Big Step By Victoria Henderson FIRST day of school is always a nerve wracking one for kindergarten students and their parents. One family in Karuah can vouch for that in multiples. The Barry family is a unique one in that they have three kindergarteners starting this year, with identical triplets heading into the classroom. News Of The Area last caught up with these unique brothers on their second birthday. It certainly is a unique thing to be identical triplets, some sources place the odds at 200 million to one. When the boys are asked what the word triplet means

they simply say, “Me and my brothers.” The boys do not yet understand all the fuss and sometimes will call themselves twins. “It’s like other people can see it but they can’t,” said their mum, Kate. According to Kate they get enjoyment out of people’s reactions and their big sister gets a kick out of it too. “She’s always helpingshe gets very bored if they’ve gone to my mum’s, even for an hour or two. “She loves to show them off,” said Kate. “She’s even happier now that she has her ‘support crew’ with her in the playground.” Having that support at ‘big school’ is important and the triplets are lucky to have

twins in the same class. Kate says it takes the pressure off them a bit, not being the only multiples in the class. Kate and her husband certainly know a thing or two about pressure. With the start of school for triplets it’s a case of three times everythinguniforms, shoes, enrolment forms. Kate said that she simplifies things a bit by keeping the choices simple for the boys. She laughed when discussing the idea of arguing with three people instead of one when trying to buy things. “It’s busy and exhausting but exciting too, any parent would say that. “We wouldn’t change anything though,” said Kate.

By Marian SAMPSON IN what might be seen as a growing problem, some of our young skateboarders could be skating on thin ice when it comes to the law. There are some growing community concerns about skateboarders on private property and in public places. Concerns have also been raised about antisocial behaviour when skaters are congregating in and around the shopping precincts. It is an issue that has seen tempers rise and there is now a matter before the courts.

(January) and Canberra (February) to enable already accredited coaches to be certified under the new program. All seven of the accredited coaches from Nelson Bay Croquet Club attended the sessions at Newcastle National Park Croquet Club on 28, 29 and

30 January. As a result, the Club now has certified coaches as follows: Trevor Black: Certified Golf Croquet Level 3, Ricochet Croquet Level 1 and Association Croquet Level 2. Karen Lilly: Accredited Golf Croquet Level 1 Cheryl Lloyd: Certified Golf Croquet Level 2

While Port Stephens Council have developed some great skate parks it seems that some of our local youth are happier skating in an urban landscape. Unfortunately this can create a safety issue particularly for our elderly residents. The skate park at Fly Point is almost half way between the commercial centres of the townships of Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay. The Council skate park offers great challenging skating as well as skating for those developing their skills. Medowie, Raymond Terrace, Anna Bay, Karuah, Salt Ash, Seaham, Medowie, Wallalong and Mallabula all

have skate parks. Skaters are encouraged to use the dedicated facilities and not to skate in the shopping precincts or contrary to signs which denote some precincts as no skating. Transport NSW tells us that, “Foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades may be ridden on footpaths unless signs specifically prohibit them, however, riders must keep to the left and give way to other pedestrians. “On separated bicycle and pedestrian paths, foot scooter, skateboard and rollerblade riders must use the section designated for bicycles, but must keep out of the path of any bicycle.”

$6000 Grants available to benefit Port Stephens

IDEAS to inject vibrancy into local towns, hold COVID Safe events or provide support to the Port Stephens community can now benefit from grants of up to $6000. Applications for round 2 of Port Stephens Council’s community funding program are now open for the Vibrant Spaces Fund, Community Event Development Fund and Community Support Fund. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the grants are designed to restart Port Stephens and support the community through COVID-19. “Since launching the funding in July last year, we’ve contributed to some amazing initiatives including the Tomaree Museum Pop Up Shop and Summer on Magnus Street. “We’re now on the hunt for our second round of grant applicants to help restart Port Stephens and make it an even more vibrant and supportive place to live. “Whether you want to hold an event, paint a mural, put on a performance, activate a space, celebrate local heritage, beautify a place or do anything that adds vibrancy and energy to our streets — we want to hear from you! “We have a range of grants for creatives, not-for-profits, businesses, community groups, schools and individuals. There really is something for everyone. “You don’t have to live in Port Stephens to apply. As long as your idea benefits our local

community, I’d encourage you to get in touch and see what’s on offer,” Mayor Palmer said. Burbridge and Burke owner Kim Burbridge says the Vibrant Spaces grant helped her partner with other businesses and creatives to put on a series of events for the community. “We’ve worked collaboratively to create a festival running through December and January in Magnus Street supporting local creatives, particularly performers who were out of work last year due to COVID-19. “We pooled our grant funding together with 4 other businesses to put on the event. It has been a real collaborative effort and that’s one of the wonderful things about being in business at Nelson Bay,” Ms Burbridge said. Mayor Palmer said it’s a great opportunity to get an idea off the ground. “It’s so simple to apply and our team is here to help you through the process. “I’d encourage anyone with a great idea they’d like to see turn into a reality to apply. “Don’t forget, if you have a smaller project, our My Incredible Place Micro Grants offer $500 year-round for artistic and creative ideas that connect our community and improve the visitor experience,” he added. OH, Yvonne, what is this mad world we are in where every move we make is monitored? You know, I think the problem is choice too many choices in every aspect of our lives. This choice has now exploded into the need for an app to monitor, quite literally, everything. It’s like that Sting song - Every breath you take, Every move you make, Every step you take, Every smile you fake - the Smartphone is watching you and the smarter it’s getting, the more reliant and dumbed-down we are becoming. Scanning barcodes of every morsel that enters our mouths takes time, and it’s also a sedentary task with your typing finger being the only body part that’s getting a workout. Along with more monitoring choices, the last couple of decades have seen a huge increase in food choices. Compare the humble school lunch box. For my generation it wasn’t even a box, just a Vegemite sandwich and an apple in a brown paper bag. Today, kids have a bento box with a three course meal, much of it made up of salty or sugary snacks, muffins, fruit juices, tripledecker sandwiches and so on. It’s a wonder the kids can get on the school bus with the weight in their backpacks. After a few years of this, they’ll then have to join the app brigade to try and undo the damage. So, in a nutshell, I think sometimes to look forward, we have to look back. Put down the phone, pick up a bottle of water, and go for a brisk walk in the sunshine. No wellbeing or diet or exercise app will be able to match that. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
