Gropers Muscle Up Against Australian Army ahead of weekend’s Clash By Mitchell LEES COURAGE, respect and teamwork. Three words the Australian Army Rugby Union men’s and women’s teams embodied in a set of trial matches against the Nelson Bay Gropers at Bill Strong Oval last week. The trials came after the week-long Inter-Brigade Rugby Competition that saw the best of the Australian Army’s rugby talent descend on Port Stephens to make the national squads. Australian Army Rugby Union National Manager Lieutenant Colonel Ashley Cootes described it as the perfect place to prepare for their upcoming tour of Tonga.

One Nation’s Neil Turner Jan Davis The Greens

NEIL Turner lives in Raymond Terrace and works as a fitter machinist, mainly in the coal industry. He is standing in the seat of Paterson for One Nation in the Federal Election. He has lived here for the past nine years with his Wife. Together they enjoy travelling and boating at the Bay. Neil started his working career as an apprentice toolmaker in the whitegoods industry and studied engineering through to design manufacturing and a Diploma in Business management. Neil Turner told News Of The Area, “I first joined Pauline Hanson’s One Nation in 1998 and stood for Election in 2001 and 2004 in the Federal seat of Riverina.” More recently, Neil stood as a candidate in the State Election held in March for the seat of Maitland where he achieved 10.9% of the vote. “I want the financial assistance Grants by the Federal Government to local Councils be restored to pre 1996 level of at least 1% of Commonwealth taxation revenue. “It is currently around .55%, and lack of Council funds has led to unaffordable rate rise applications by Councils.”

Meet United Australia Port’s Senate Party’s Graham Burtson Candidate

ENTERING the Political ring for a second time contesting for the seat of Paterson is Graham Burston for the United Australia Party (UAP). Graham has successfully operated his own building consultancy and design drafting business for many years and has extensive history in the mining industry. Graham was elected to Cessnock City Council as an Independent Alderman in 1991, and was re-elected in a landslide victory in 1995 and becoming Deputy Mayor. He ran as a State candidate for Cessnock in 1999 achieving two party preferred status. In the 2016 Federal Election, Graham first challenged for the seat of Paterson where he gained 13% of the vote on a limited campaign. The UAP is famous for its bright yellow advertising and of course its equally colourful leader, Clive Palmer. In regard to preferences Clive Palmer is confident, a recent media release claimed “The United Australia Party will win Government, consequently our preferences may never be distributed.” The statement goes on stating, “In the final analysis, a poor economy is a bad result for all Australians. “Therefore, our United Australia Party Executive has decided we will be preferencing the LNP,” Mr Palmer said. Of local concern to Port Stephens residents’, candidate Graham Burston is standing

on a platform which includes the buy back of PFAS affected properties in Williamtown’s Red Zone, and the duplication of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Nelson Bay. Graham Burston told News Of The Area, “We would provide compensation for those impacted by PFAS. “Both the Labor and Liberal Parties voted against a buy back, which we find unacceptable. “People in the Red Zone are suffering: there are over 50 people in the Williamtown Red Zone that have varied types of cancer which I attribute to PFAS.” Mr Burston claims his Party will force the Government to compensate those affected. If need be, we will put forward legislation from the Senate, to do something constructive to help those poor buggers that are doing it tough.”

The UAP will also continue to fund the groundbreaking work with hemp seed by Newcastle University to address the PFAS contamination in the groundwater and soil. “It is terrible for families; there are Grandparents that can’t have their Grandchildren visit them, for fear of contamination,” he said. This is not just Williamtown: there are PFAS issues across Australia. Mr Burston also believes that upgrading of the road between Williamtown and Nelson Bay must be completed and Federal funding should be forthcoming for the project. “The local member needs to make sure that happens,” he concluded.

First training for F-35A Joint Strike Fighter

NUMBER 3 Squadron from RAAF Base Williamtown will conduct the first training for F-35A Joint Strike Fighter aircraft over Salt Ash Air Weapons Range (SAAWR) from Monday-Friday, 6-17 May 2019. Up to four jets will conduct a number of passes over the range for up to two weeks during weekdays only. Acting Commander Air Combat Group, Group Captain Harvey Reynolds, said the initial training runs would involve a series of dry passes over the range, and be followed by gunnery activities. GPCAPT Reynolds said residents living in East Medowie, Salt Ash and Lemon Tree Passage can expect the range to be used intermittently throughout this period. “SAAWR training activities are an important part of the validation and verification phase for the newly introduced aircraft and the aircrew,” he said. “The program will include practicing F-35A weapons loading and unloading procedures, and provide gunnery practice which remains an essential skill for fighter aircrew,” he said. The F-35A aircraft will operate over the range in a similar manner to the F/A-18A/B Hornet aircraft. F-35A operations over the SAAWR were assessed and approved as part of the F35A Environment Impact Statement.

“Annual use of SAAWR will remain well under the usage allowed under the operational conditions for the range which is a maximum of 115 days each year over a 10 year rolling average,” GPCAPT Reynolds said.

“Air Force has a responsibility to ensure personnel are ready and able to deploy at short notice and this involves necessary air to ground training that is employed at SAAWR,” he said.

Every effort was made to minimise any inconvenience to residents during SAAWR training and advised the range schedule could change at short notice due to weather or operational considerations.

My kids have asked me for Mother’s Day ideas. What would you like for Mother’s Day?

Do I need to give notice if I want to leave when my lease ends? There seems to be a lot of confusion around the different notice periods required with a lease, which is not surprising, given the varying rules and regulations and depending on whether you are within a lease, out of a lease, a tenant or a landlord. The answer to your specific question is that yes you do need to give notice in writing to the management agency. As the tenant your responsibilities are: If you are still within your lease period and you decide to leave, you must provide the managing agency with 2 weeks notice to vacate, in writing. If you are out of your lease and paying week to week then you are required to provide 3 weeks notice to vacate, in writing. Note that if you wish to break your lease early a break lease fee will apply. The best thing to always do, is to communicate regularly with your management agency, thus providing them with the time to be organised and to re-advertise the property for when you have vacated. FROM New York to New Delhi, Australians overseas urged to vote early. Australians who are enrolled for the 2019 Federal Election and will be overseas on Saturday 18 May will be able to pre-poll at any one of 85 overseas voting centres. “Centres are commencing voting services progressively from 6 May, and they will be located at participating Australian diplomatic missions and other offices around the world,” the Electoral Commissioner, Mr Tom Rogers, said. “Please carefully check opening times at the website address below Overseas voting centres, dates and times at participating Australian diplomatic Missions: https:// www.aec.gov.au/election/ overseas.htm General information: READING:

DOESN’T every day feel like Mother’s Day? I mean being a mother is not something you are never given the opportunity to forget from the moment your screaming newborn is placed on your belly, through to the terrible twos, the angst-ridden teenage years, the ‘I’m back, renting is too expensive’ decade, and so on. Mother’s Day, therefore, should be a 365-day-a year commitment from your children, so with that in mind, here are some things I would like from my children. When I put your folded clothes on your bed, I’d like you to get them into the drawer instead of letting them sit there for a week until they have fallen off onto the floor where you assume they are dirty washing and put them back in the laundry basket. When I drive you to your casual job, I would like to listen to my own playlist, not the expletive-ridden, misogynistic trash that you need to get you into “work mode”. When you have finished your meal, I’d like you to deal with your plate instead of quietly skulking off to your bedroom, thinking I won’t notice. When you apply spray tan in my white bathroom, I’d like you to at least attempt to remove those rust-coloured stains from every surface when you are done. When you try on every item of clothing before going out, I am not a sales assistant who is on hand to hang those items back in your wardrobe. Clothes and towels do not live on the floor. If all those ideas fail, please just give me a massage voucher so I can get rid of some of the nervous tension that resides in my temples and neck due to dealing with the above. NELSON Bay Hockey have come up trumps with the 2019 Season off to a great start. The Club is very excited to be hosting Zeke Newman, the top official umpire for Hockey NSW will be conducting an umpiring session at the Bay after club member Cathy Churchill was successful in her bid to win the session via a facebook competition. Cathy Churchill told News Of The Area, “Hockey NSW put up a request for anyone

to comment on the post if their club was interested in having the top umpire in NSW come and run a specialised umpiring clinic. “Nelson Bay Hockey is always looking for opportunities to further the experience of our players, and we haven’t really had the ability to focus locally on our umpires before. “They would usually have to travel to Maitland or Newcastle to take up this kind of opportunity, so we are really grateful that we are now going to host Zeke right here at Nelson Bay,” she said. Zeke is the Umpire and Officials Development Manager and is responsible for actively managing the umpire and official pathways by developing the quality
