World Of Work

WITH the job market constantly changing and many jobs not thought of two or three decades ago now existing, it is important that young people are prepared for the world of work. Irrawang High School recognises the need to equip young people with employability and life skills. Prior to school break-up Year 10 students participate in the World Of Work, or WOW Program. In partnership with The Real Futures Foundation and with the sponsorship of the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, students have engaged with a professional learning opportunity. Across three days, one day per student, students learnt important social

and work skills, a program that has been hosted by the school for the past six years. It is a school to work transition program, facilitated by Ms Alexandra Joy from UQ Power in Newcastle. The program consolidates the themes and topics covered by the careers program at Irrawang High School. Three groups of thirty students caught the bus to the Club each day where they enjoyed morning tea and a formal, sit-down business-style lunch with compliments of the Club. An important component of the program was having six community representatives come in each day to lunch with the students. This gave the students the opportunity to talk with professionals in

their local area. News Of The Area was proud to have been invited each day to speak with the students about working in the media. Some of the topics students learnt about as part of the program, included: networking skills, group interviews, relaxing techniques, boundary setting, teamwork, communication strategies including body language, and social etiquette such as eating in a business environment. Students reported at the end of the day that the program provided an excellent opportunity for them to learn about work futures. The Real Futures organisation is part of a national not-for-profit organisation that seeks to assist young people to develop skills for personal success. It has a focus on initiating original projects that help prepare students for the world of work to avoid unemployment.

Attempted armed robbery of Metro

AT About 7.10pm last Friday 27 December, a man entered a the Metro petrol station on Adelaide Street, Heatherbrae and approached the counter. The man asked for a pack of cigarettes before allegedly threatening the male staff member with what appeared to be a firearm and demanding cash and cigarettes. The man jumped the counter, before struggling with the staff member who managed to escape from the premises. The staff member returned, and a further struggled followed. The man ran from the store, jumping on a bicycle and fleeing the scene without any cash. No customers were inside the store at the time, and no one was hurt. Officers from Port

Stephens-Hunter Police District were called and began their investigations. A crime scene was established, and a number of items were seized for forensic testing including a paintball pistol in the shape of a firearm, a cap, a bag and a bicycle helmet. The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged between 20 and 25 years old, around 180cm tall, with red hair and a medium build. He was last seen wearing a brown hooded jumper, brown pants and black shoes. Anyone with information about this man or this incident are urged to contact Raymond Terrace Police Station on 02 4983 7599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

How do you defriend someone on social media? Their views upset me and I realise we have nothing in common. Mr PL, Tanilba Bay MR PL, I think you are being emotionally sensitive, which is an admirable quality. Social media seems to bring out the very best and worst in people and sometimes a good old spring clean can be quite liberating. You can do this in a few ways. The first is to grandly announce that you are having a break from social media, which you aren’t actually doing, it is just a bit of a decoy, like the Liberal party trying to pretend Scott Morrison wasn’t in Hawaii. Then you can go about and delete whoever you want. Alternatively you can write a contemplative post full of emojis indicating that you have reevaluated your friendships based on your star sign and deleted anyone who is incompatible. You may also like to add that you’ve changed your name to Powerful Deer and joined a tribe of like-minded people. Another option is to write offensive comments on each post this person makes and eventually they will block you, which is sort of like the ‘it’s you, not me, but I’m going to make you think it’s me so you feel better about you’ traditional method. Finally, there are all sorts of settings you can alter to change what you do and don’t see and if you have the time or inclination to go to this much trouble, Mr PL, then perhaps you just need to delete your account altogether as it is causing you too much pressure at this festive of year. CONGRATULATIONS are in order for Tomaree High School teacher Adrian Crew. Adrian Crew has just been announced as the winner of the annual Robert Begg’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) Teacher of the Year. VET is Vocational Education and Training which replaces some subjects students are studying with units of competence. VET Courses are offered to students in high schools. The courses include apprenticeships and traineeships which can lead to over 500 different career pathways. VET Courses offer students a different approach to school one which sees them complete their schooling with either a part

qualification or the completion of a part of an apprenticeship. This sees them better placed when finding employment. VET delivers training for 8 out of 10 occupations predicted to have the greatest new jobs growth in the five years to May 2023. These include roles in aged and disabled carers, child carers, software and application programmers, waiters, education aides, chefs, kitchen hands and advertising, public relations and sales management. Adrian received the award due to his commitment to student excellence in VET studies. Students are prepared to operate successfully in the workplace, through initiatives including the construction of a scaled house by Year 12 students. Stephen Jennings of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, “All staff and students would like to congratulate Adrian on this tremendous recognition of his efforts & results.” Adrian teaches Industrial Arts for Years 7-12, in particular he works with Y11 & 12 VET Construction Y11, Y12 Industrial Technology Timber, , Year 11 & 12 Design & Technology, Y9 & 10 Timber. Adrian started working at Tomaree High School in January 1999, and while he has left and returned to the school, he has taught for around 17 years at the school. Adrian isn’t only a teacher He also holds qualifications as a Carpenter and Joiner and a Motor Mechanic prior to being a Teacher, this gives him a wealth of real world experience to pass on to the students.

Council Approve Third Service Station

THE last Port Stephens Council meeting for the year saw a controversial Development Application approved by Councillors for a new service station and convenience store in Medowie. Established in 1979 as a farm, the park has remained in the hands of local family, the Sansom’s. In 2017 Oakvale Wildlife Park decided to give back to the wildlife that call their property home and started making a contribution to conservation through aiding in the rehabilitation of sick

and injured wildlife, restoring habitat and providing a second chance for animals that can’t be released back into the wild. WOMEN’S AFL in the region is growing and with it comes some promising stars of the future in Port Stephens. News Of The Area took some time to interview one of those upcoming players from Port Stephens Power AFL Club.. Kayla Merritt is now 15 years old, having started playing at 11 years old, and has just received clearance to play in the women’s team, previously having to play in Newcastle due to lack of junior youth girl numbers. Kayla told News Of The Area, “AFL has been a big part of our family for a very long time so it’s no surprise that I joined the sport. I’ve grown up watching it since I was little and

was inspired by how much passion my Dad has for the game.” Dad, Anthony Merritt, is also the Senior Women’s Coach for the 2020 season. In the past 5 years Kayla has played for four different clubs, playing in all positions, but mainly on the wing or in mid field. Her goals for AFL are to try her hardest at every training session and game and to try to make the Representative team again, but most importantly to make her Dad proud. Kayla supports Port Adelaide in the men’s AFL and doesn’t really have an AFLW team, however enjoys watching Erin Phillips of the Adelaide Crows play. Port Stephens Power are starting pre-season training for both the Senior Women’s and Juniors at Ferodale Oval in Medowie on Tuesday 14 January and would encourage any new players to come along to train with them.
