Progress for Connected Learning Centre MINISTER for Skills and Tertiary Education Dr Geoff Lee, and Liberal Member of the NSW Upper House for the Hunter Taylor Martin visited Port Stephens last week to meet with stakeholders to discuss progress towards the new Nelson Bay Connected Learning Centre. Dr Lee said a $61.7 million investment to construct eight new Connected Learning Centres in the recent Budget would help deliver the skills and training needed to support local economies across NSW, including in Nelson Bay. “The 2019-20 NSW Budget continues the NSW Government’s proud record of strongly backing the State’s public education and training provider and the crucial role it plays delivering the skills needed in local communities right across NSW,” Dr Lee said. “In this year’s Budget, we’ve delivered funding for the design and early planning of TAFE NSW’s first permanent presence in Nelson Bay. “The new modern campus, known as a Connected Learning Centre, will

is geared to deliver these benefits across NSW.” Mr Martin said the new Connected Learning Centre would add much needed choice in education and training for the region. “The new multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art Connected Learning Centre

MOST people over the age of 60 will remember exactly where they were when the first man walked on the moon. It was an event which stopped the world as grainy TV footage was relayed around the planet. Les Fellows knows exactly where he was on the momentous day as he was one of the small team of Aussies who made the lunar linkup possible. With the 50th anniversary of the event, the media is reliving the epic voyage and Les gives us the inside story. “I was one of the permanent team manning the radio telescope at Parkes,” he said. “There was no line of sight to NASA as they were blindsided by the earth’s rotation so they asked us to help,” he added. “We broke every rule in the
book,” Les said. “Despite a howling gale, our Director, John Bolton, instructed us to tilt the dish ‘till it actually touched the ground to pick up the signal,” he said. “This was then relayed around the world.” For their efforts, the Aussie team was rewarded with Certificates of Appreciation by NASA. Just four Aussies were on duty in 1970 at Parkes when a fire on board the ill fated Apollo 13 mission saw a desperate cry for help go out. ‘Houston, we have a problem,’ is a phrase still used today and was first spoken by astronaut James Lovell during this drama. Once again, the dedicated team at Parkes was able to connect the stricken craft
to mission control, a feat which undoubtedly saved their lives. The vital role played by Les and the three other staff that day was forgotten until many years later when NASA officials presented them

with medals made from the original launching platform. Both missions were turned into movies. An Apollo 11 film has just been released following ‘The Dish’ (2000) an Aussie classic starring Sam Neil. Tom Hanks played the lead role in the Apollo 13 film (1995).

Big is Beautiful By Marian SAMPSON BIG is beautiful. The artists of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre (PSCAC) has a display of “Large Modern Canvases” until 30 July. The Exhibition is an eclectic presentation covering the explosive elements of creative art on large canvasses. Elements featuring in the works include line, form, shape, volume, mass, colour, texture, space, time, and motion. Being creative is one of the joys of painting. The variety of the large canvases will suit modern homes. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “The Second Exhibition is “Quilting to warm your home” where Our Quilters have prepared items to put warmth into your home and bedroom with one of these colourful quilts.” Pam Riddel is the Centre’s Feature Potter. Diana Atkinson is the Feature Artist until 30 July. Diana took up art on her retirement in 2008. Other than art classes at
school in New Zealand, where the materials used were butchers’ paper and poster paint, she had not pursued her interest in drawing and painting, and decided art was a good way to meet and make new friends with similar interests upon her retirement. She attended workshops run by the Orange Art Society and gradually developed skills in the areas of painting with watercolours and oils. Diana is influenced by great Australian landscape artists such as Tom Roberts and Albert Namatjira. Her style has developed to take in many subjects and styles, but Diana is also greatly influenced by the colours of the Australian scenery. “She has successfully exhibited and sold art works in Molong, and through the Orange Regional Gallery and the Orange Art Society as well as Port Stephens Library and at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.” Since moving to Port Stephens in 2017 Diana has experimented with acrylics and pastels and thoroughly enjoys the camaraderie, mentoring and

encouragement offered by members of the Arts Centre. “Recently Di has been travelling to Newcastle to experiment with pastels
through classes run by Gwendolin Lewis through the Newcastle Art Society. “Di has been fortunate to become an enthusiastic
member of the PSCAC and exhibits regularly with fellow artists,” she said. Admission is free, the Gallery is open 10-4pm daily
and is found on the hill at Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road in Nelson Bay.

IN THE season of President changeovers for Rotary Clubs across Port Stephens and beyond, the Raymond Terrace Rotary Club has held their Annual Changeover dinner. For the Raymond Terrace
Rotarians, it was determined that current President Mr Steve Merritt will continue as President for a second year. The evening became a celebration of the many successes the Club enjoyed throughout the year. President Steve told News
Of The Area, “I attribute the successes to Mr Merritt and the hard working Club members in both fundraising and in front line delivery to the community.” “Rotary has worked alongside other community groups including the Salvation Army, Friends with Dignity, and Port Stephens Council.” “Our best results come

from the combined efforts of like minded community groups.” During the evening, President Merritt thanked local businesses including Bunnings and MarketPlace for their continuing support that enabled the funds raised from the public, to go so much further. A selection of highlights celebrated included the organisation of Australia Day Celebrations in Raymond Terrace, Pride of Workmanship Awards, and the Annual Primary School Debating Competition. In working with other community groups, the standout events included raising funds for Drought Relief and the recent visit to Raymond Terrace of the Rotary Men’s Health Education Rural Van, previously covered in the News Of The Area. Over two days the Van averaged an assessment every 11 minutes with three people identified with life threatening conditions and referred to their doctors for immediate follow up. Within Rotary, the highest recognition a Club can bestow is the award of a Paul
FIVE people were injured (two critically) after a backyard heater exploded at a Medowie home last weekend. Fundraising for a Cause By Heather SHARP
MS KATRINA Ridley, a Bowen Health Therapist in Boat Harbour, is organising a fundraiser for the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). It will be held at The Shoal Bay Country Club on Saturday, 3 August and will include an afternoon and an evening event. A HMRI representative will give a keynote at the event and will join a panel of health and wellness practitioners.
The panel will discuss the need for medical research. Ms Ridley is motivated to holding the fundraiser after losing her two nephews to illness only 10 months apart. Twenty years ago, Patrick who was aged 10, lost his life to a chronic blood disorder. Another nephew, William was aged just 20 months when he died of Leukaemia. Ms Ridley told News Of The Area, “To say that
this devastated their parents, siblings and the extended family is an understatement.” “It was after this that I decided I wanted to make a difference in the lives of people who are in pain and or generally unwell.” “I could never have changed the outcome for my beautiful nephews but maybe just maybe I could help others experience a better quality of life.” Badged as an official fundraiser by HMRI, Ms Ridley has been given an

Ms Ridley said, “For the last 20 years I have always wanted to do something in their memories.” “Research at that time the boys passed away was not what it is today but even today there is a long way to go.” “This fundraiser is also helping to ensure, in some small way, that HMRI can continue being a world leader in research for all types of illnesses.” “HMRI is a Not-ForProfit organisation that relies on community based events to raise funds.” “I cannot stress
enough the importance of independent, quality research.” “What makes HMRI more special it is in our own back yard and making a difference to the lives not just of we Australians but people

Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com. au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
After going on a week-long camping trip with my family where we stayed in a tent, I have discovered we are incompatible. I’m thoroughly disillusioned.
RENT OR BUY?
RENT OR BUY? This age-old question is usually accompanied by thoughts of why pay out hundreds, maybe even thousands of rent dollars each month, versus the expense that goes with buying and owning a home. So, what to do? Renting frees up your savings to spend or invest elsewhere and allows you to live a more flexible life, even moving from place to place at will. On the flip side, you are vulnerable to rent rises and unexpected moves if your landlord decides to sell. Home ownership can be expensive and those costs certainly don’t stop with the purchase, but ownership provides you with a valuable asset that will appreciate over time. Buying forces you to budget and save, rather than spending your savings perhaps unwisely. And you’ll have equity you can access for other uses such as renovating, diversified investment and travel. Everyone’s circumstances and goals are different. There are many factors to consider and either situation is not for everyone. Do your sums and seek expert advice.” Hope this helps Denise
AN off-duty Police Officer and a local man are being praised for their bravery after rescuing three people, including two children, who were washed off rocks at Port Stephens last week. About 2.40pm (Saturday 20 July 2019), emergency services were called to Boat Harbour after reports that three people, who had been swimming in rock pools, were washed into the ocean. Due to high swell and windy conditions an eightyear-old boy, 15-yearold girl and 44-year-old woman – were carried
south. Onlookers alerted a local man, Mr Michael Pascoe, of Boat Harbour, in a small aluminium vessel, who went to their aid. An off-duty Police Officer Sergeant Andrew Parker, from the Marine Area Command, entered the water with a rescue board and pulled the three swimmers to the boat. Officers from Nelson Bay Police Station, Water Police, Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving NSW all attended the scene. The two children and

LET us consider the different circumstances that lead people to stay in tents. People in refugee camps, through no fault of their own, live in tents. Mellow hipsters (sipping chai and eating tofu burgers) hang out in luxury tents for the duration of a two-day music festival. These tents have cushions, solar-powered fairy lights, floral bunting and strategically placed harmonicas and banjos. They have a calming vibe, Mrs TK. Then there’s the tents owned by middleincome parents who have two highly-strung teenagers, a Commodore and a cashed-in BCF voucher. This family has gone from their spacious home, so spacious that they may not even run into each other for days on end, with all the mod-cons (you know, central heating, a media room, an ice dispenser, a liquor cabinet, multiple escape routes) to sharing a nylon pyramid on a patch of dirt with nothing for entertainment but each other and the dwindling light of a dying fire (an uncomfortable metaphor for those in the family bright enough to catch on). This situation may be fun for Bear Grylls types who are happy to drink their own urine and eat fried centipedes when the going gets tough, but the average suburban family will not cope. They will take out their misery on each other until a survival of the fittest (or the most sarcastic) Lord of the Flies scenario ensues. There is absolutely nothing wrong with separate family holidays, particularly when you have pubescent kids. Send them to a location hosted by professionals. You know, Troubled Teen Boot Camp or something similar. Send the husband on a reef trip. And you? Go to a place that has Transcendental or Vipassana or Vodka in its title.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Street Eats and Beats Win 16
By Heather SHARP
TOMAREE Youth Community Action (TYCA) and Port Stephens Council last weekend joined forces to host the ‘Street Eats and Beats’ Festival at Robinson Reserve, Anna Bay. Featured at the event was live music, skate and scoot demonstrations, a sausage sizzle, and markets made up solely by stalls run by young people from Port Stephens. Among the entrepreneurial youth of the area, the youngest stallholder of the day was six-yearold Xavier Vaughan. A student of Wirreanda Public School in Medowie, Xavier is in Year 1. The Street Eats and Beats Festival was Xavier’s first ever market stall. Xavier recently launching his own business, with social media help from his Mum and Dad. The business, ‘Xavier’s Dream Treasures’ features hand drawn pictures and social messages Xavier thinks are important, are made into pendants, keyrings, brooches, and magnets. Messages includes affirming

Dear News Of The Area SOCIALLY abused online? You matter, you always have The Australia Institute (2019) estimates online harassment and cyberhate to cost Australians an estimated $3.7 billion dollars in health costs and lost income. More than one in three of all internet users reported they had experienced some form of online harassment or abuse. Social media posts may be impulsively generated and widely shared, with little thought for the impact on those discussed/ targeted and for which individuals may feel powerless to respond. Online abuse may have adverse consequences for one’s mental wellbeing and some young people are especially at risk. Governments, social media organisations and communities have a collective responsibility

able to donate funds and decide whether they would like to contribute to sporting equipment, education supplies, or other needed items such as water filtration systems for children, their families, and the community. Xavier spoke with News Of The Area and said, “I wanted to raise some money to send to the school so the kids can have all the good things we have at my school.”
statements such as ‘Kind Is Cool’, which was the favourite on the weekend with customers. Along with sharing positive messages, Xavier’s business is raising funds for an important cause, with 100% of proceeds going to a special group called, Australia For Cambodia. Run by Jan and Owen Holbert from Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens, this group funds a school in Cambodia—with family, friends, and well-wishers

to ensure that online content does not denigrate, demean or defame the reputation or wellbeing of others, either directly or indirectly. When working with clients I discuss the concept of perspective and variously share with them an image of a woman. Most clients identify with the image of a young woman in the adjacent illustration, although until they shift their perspective they can have difficulty with also recognising the image of a woman in her senior years. Perspective indicates one’s viewpoint, outlook or opinion on a matter that may be either individually expressed or collectively shared. People’s opinions may be helpful and thought provoking, although at times their opinions may be hurtful and distressing. Additionally, sometimes people’s comments may be misleading or untrue. Importantly you are not
defined by the opinions of others, notwithstanding that people are generally free to respectfully disagree and contest each other’s point of view. One of the most rewarding aspects of working clinically with clients is helping them to see those intrinsic, unique and positive features which they do not identify about themselves, perhaps because they have frequently been told and/or believed otherwise. As global citizens we cannot be sure of one’s direct or indirect contribution, positive influence or motivating legacy for our family, friends, workmates and communities; past, present or future. However, you matter, as do your lived experiences, which for some people may be characterised by private struggles with mental health and testing life circumstances. Should you be experiencing mental distress arising from online abuse, the following
“Sports equipment, books for learning, and clean water so they can be healthy.” “I’m really excited to see the pictures of what they buy with the money,” he said. You can learn more about Xavier’s fundraising endeavours by searching on Facebook for “Xavier’s Dream Treasures” where there are also links for the work being done in Cambodia by “Australia For Cambodia”.

Elvis Theme By Ann SCULLY
LAST Saturday, local resident, Mick Farnham celebrated his 70th birthday with family and friends with Mick’s long time friend, David Cazalet, an Elvis Presley impersonator, entertaining 105 guests who had travelled from Queensland, Coffs Harbour, Pokolbin, Central Coast and Sydney. David and Mick first met through Super K Mart, Casula in 1987 and together they shared some very special memories with other friends in attendance at the party. Family and friends were in the spirit of the function dressing to the Elvis Rock n Roll theme which included special guest, Marilyn Monroe, who sang Happy Birthday to Mick. Great photos were captured by Mick’s nephew, Les Farnham with Mick enjoying two very special moments when Elvis sang Return to Sender to granddaughter, Natasha and In the Ghetto which was
dedicated to Mick’s mate, Stephen, who lost his life 49 years ago. Family and friends danced the night away to old time favourites - Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas, Edge of Reality and many more. Mick’s birthday cake
was created by Heidi Davidson and decorated in the Elvis theme. When asked about his special night, Mick said, “Thanks to my wife, Lee and the family and friends for making my 70th a most enjoyable birthday.”
