FRIENDSHIP is often the first thing people seek when they move to a new area. The Port Stephens Friendship Group has been introducing people to each other in the region for an epic 25 years. SUBMITTING a development application (DA) will soon be simpler and faster, with Port Stephens Council moving all applications to the NSW Planning Portal. The NSW Planning Portal is an online platform where the community, industry and government can work together on a single digital platform to support effective planning and decision making. The portal is now open for customers to lodge DAs and will be made mandatory from 31 December 2020, as part of the NSW Government requirement. Development Assessment and Compliance Section Manager Kate Drinan said the change will provide a consistent, more accessible and faster approach to lodging a DA. “The portal provides the community with

SOME of us don’t really think about being ready for a fire until a fire is on our doorstep. Others make their livelihoods protecting us from fire. Some make the ultimate sacrifice serving their communities. There are lots of things we can all do to make sure that we are prepared and ready especially during fire season. There has been quite a bit happening for the local teams at Fire and Rescue. This week,

On Sunday 1 November, the crew from Salamander Bay were called to assist with an individual who was stuck in a lift at a venue in Nelson Bay. Giacomo Arnott, Deputy Captain Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue told News Of The Area, “Fortunately the lift was able to be fixed and the person escaped with no injuries.” The Salamander Bay crew is a specialised

emergency, anywhere in Australia, and provides you with the tools to identify your location and provide that to emergency services,” he said. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Being prepared and knowing what your plan is if you are faced by a fire is important. There is a new awareness campaign called First Saturday which encourages people to prepare their homes for fires. Simple actions like cleaning gutters can make a big difference to the safety of properties.
Bay Childcare Centre Raise Funds Kindy Kids Fundraiser Salamander For Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group By Marian SAMPSON
KIDS care and are aware about issues which face our community. Salamander Bay Child Care Centre conducted a week-long fund raiser for the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group. These cheerful kids and their families went all out to support women in need after a team member at the centre was diagnosed with breast cancer. Judy Watton of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group told News Of The Area, “They raised $176.35 for the group.” Daniel Freeman, the Center Director, was so impressed with the support the group gave to a colleague who is suffering with breast cancer, he wanted to do something for their cause. Daniel intends to continue with a fundraiser
each year, all donations are most welcome to the group as they are a not for profit organisation and all funds raised are through donations or fundraising events such as the “In the Pink Golf Day” and the “In the Pink Breakfast”. Keeping in the spirit of being creative kids the children at the centre made a mock up cheque and presented it to the President of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group Judy Watton. The cheque presentation was a socially distanced event with Judy Watton standing back from the regular attendees at the Salamander Bay Child Care Centre, however her heartfelt thanks were shared with all the children who participated in the fundraiser.

Oysters Weather the Storm By Geoff WALKER
THE lockdown of interstate and overseas destinations to travellers has given our local oyster industry a boost. Holidaymakers have flocked to Port Stephens and other seaside destinations and are determined to enjoy themselves by making the best of the options available to them during the Covid-19 restrictions. They also eat out in the cities and spend their recreational dollars in fine
dining. Whatever the case, our oyster farmers are achieving good prices for their product and in some cases find it hard to keep up the supply. But it isn't all plain sailing as one local grower explains. “Continuity is everything to us and with shut-downs due to weather events or possible pollution concerns we can find it very difficult to run an effective business,” he stated. “Should we be out of action in the peak demand weeks leading up to Christmas, our

retailers will go elsewhere and just might not come back. “Our expenses don't stop and we still have to pay wages and pay other bills without a cash flow,” he said. Many oyster farmers believe that they collectively need to have more input with the regulatory authorities to work out a better way forward. The general feeling at the moment is that there is too much of a gap between the growers and those who control their industry.

Stonework telling the stories of Tilligerry

THE various stone structures around Tilligerry have an interesting history and Tanilba House has more than its fair share of them. The original homestead was built from stone retrieved from the site itself or close by around the foreshore. Burnt oyster shell was used as mortar to point it up. The arched gates, those at the main road, 'The Temple' and other features were added in the 1930s by legendary developer Henry Halloran with a certain Mr Crawley, a local who helped cart rock to the construction sites. If you look closely, there are two types of stone used. The rounded rocks are part of the family of 'conglomerates' which are
cemented into a sandstonelike material which can be easily broken up. Along Tanilba's foreshore you can still see large conglomerate boulders put there in earlier efforts to control foreshore erosion. The other type is an igneous rock and this was blasted from a quarry behind the Vince Woodman oval at Mallabula. This type of rock is hard and brittle. When struck with a sledge hammer it actually sends sparks flying. The last time stone was extracted from this site was in the 1980s when the local fire brigade needed some decorative rock to build a garden in front of the fire station in Lemon Tree Passage. A friendly RAAF demolition officer agreed to
blow it up for them but he needed an excuse to do the job. Bernie Henderson, the fire captain, rang the base reporting a suspicious object in the old quarry which looked like an unexploded bomb. Out came the experts and a huge explosion rocked the town. So much stone was blasted that the firies had enough not only for their station but plenty left over for paving and edging at their own homes. The edging still surrounds a little garden outside the old station which is now an arts and crafts centre. Another quarry operated in Lemon Tree Passage for many years. We might tell its story at some time down the track.

Probus Members Meet At The Tavern

THE members of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay are finally getting back together having held some smaller outings and activities. There is much excitement as the group is set to hold its first monthly meeting at the Fingal Bay Sports Club this week since the COVID-19 crisis began. Julia Redlich of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay told News Of The Area, “Variations in our weather lately – summer sunshine one day, no singing in too much rain the next – plays havoc with arrangement for activities that involve Probus Club members getting together to celebrate the fun and friendship they enjoy. “So when wind and rain and rough seas meant no-go
for Fingal Bay Probus Club members and their planned ferry trip to Tea Gardens!” she said. Undaunted they set off to the Salamander Tavern where sunshine peeped through on their arrival and members sat
down to enjoy the pleasure of good food and wine and lots of conversation. With the resumption of club meetings the club's members are excited to be planning regular catch ups and of course a Covid-19 safe Christmas Party is also on the cards. Monthly meetings take place on the second Monday
of every month at 9.30am at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, at 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. The group is also planning to resume amended versions of their usual programme of barbecues, walking for pleasure, wine appreciation, book lovers and learning from a range of guest speakers. Port Surfers Take Wins At Tradies Event

IT was the battle of the tradies in the surf over the weekend and Port Stephens surfers were well represented at Cronulla Beach. The surfing was actionpacked in shifty beachbreak conditions as surfers competed in the Volkswagen Tradies Surfmasters event. Soldiers Point surfer Kelvin Hawkins took out the win in the Over-55 Men’s division while Anna Bay surfer Jamie Doran was also placed first in the Single Fin division. Hawkins beat fellow Port Stephens surfer Michael Hoysted of Fern Bay who took second place in the Over-55 division. Both surfers negotiated
the bumps and chop that plagued the line up over the duration of the final to claim top honours and head back to Port Stephens with their heads held high. Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Jamie Doran dominated the single fin competition, he certainly delivered a dominating performance. “Michael Hoysted has been performing well, he is just like good wine, he just keeps getting better – he has also done well in the Surf Masters every year.” Also from Port Stephens, Kelvin Hawkins delivered a great performance in hotly contested heat. “When the guys in this category get the opportunity to compete they go hard.”

Cash in this National Recycling Week
WHETHER you’re the best sort in your neighbourhood or you don’t recycle at all, cash prizes are up for grabs this National Recycling Week, just for telling MidCoast Council how you use your yellow-lidded bin. The annual recycling event is a great time to think about our recycling habits, and by taking part in a short on-line survey, provide insight on where we can improve. The five-minute survey is a simple true / false quiz and participants will be placed in a draw to win one of five $100 #shopmidcoast gift cards. “While a pleasing portion of our community regularly use their kerbside recycling bins, it’s not always clear what can – and what can’t – be recycled,” Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell explained.

“We’re conducting a survey this year to help us understand what gaps there are in our recycling habits. The results will provide valuable information to help us develop education campaigns according to community needs, and provide a benchmark for measuring our recycling performance over time.” Contamination in the recycling process is a widespread issue, and just one person in the street placing the wrong item in their yellowbin can mean a whole truckload of otherwise recyclable material ends up in landfill. Common mistakes include placing food residue, soft plastics, cords and ropes, and small items (even if made of recyclable material) in with recyclables. “One of the easiest mistakes to make is boxing or bagging your recyclables before placing them in the yellow bin. Then I think your first point is to determine just how much you love the property, not just visually, but will it meet your daily needs? If so, then, if significant repairs/ alterations are required, do you have the deep pockets and resolve to see them through within the tight and often costly guidelines? We’ve all watched ‘Restoration Home’ and sympathise with property owners when things get tough. If you love the home, and you have the passion to work within the guidelines, I say don’t be afraid, be excited about the purchase and engage the best people to work with you. Yes, there might be plenty of tears, but there’ll also be plenty of joy. When you own a significant home, you are the custodian of a slice of our country’s development. That’s definitely something to be immensely proud of!

Dear Tara, NORMALLY I complain about any conversations to do with Christmas prior to December, but after what has felt like a year of apocalyptic proportions, I reckon we should just get it over and done with. So, let's have this conversation. People celebrate Christmas in many different ways. There are those who have been putting presents on Lay-by for months. Their festive tree is already decorated. The house is adorned with lights. They have had their Christmas photo shoots and they are about to embark on a marathon of cooking, starting with the Christmas pudding and ending with rum balls with Oh Come All Ye Faithful blasting from their sound system. Others are a little more subtle. A week before Christmas, they wander aimlessly around the shops wondering exactly what a surly sixteen-year-old boy could possibly want or need. They drag the Christmas tree from the garage and discover it's infested with rat droppings. They make plaintive suggestions to the more celebratory members of the family to forget the whole thing, and then they too make rum balls . . . well, they pour themselves a rum. Close enough. Now to the whole present thing. We do a secret Santa that is never a secret because certain members of the family are impossible to buy for, so we demand a redraw -- a bit like Donald Trump. If your husband is keen for a shared present, then at the very least, you should both have input into what that present is. Perhaps the barbecue would be more suited to a Father's Day gift? Or a birthday present? So no, I wouldn't just go along with it, unless it means he is going to be doing more than his fair share of cooking, in which case it sounds like a great deal. Bay’s new black belts By Marian SAMPSON SOME sports are easier to learn than others and some take a lifetime to perfect. Shorinji Kempo is a martial art based on self defense and self development. There can be a very technical side to it with blocks, attacks, pins, grabs and arm locks. They say that by the time you reach black belt you are now ready to begin learning. Four locals have recently attained their black belts in this martial art which is practised at the Salamander Bay Welfare Club Dojo. Steven Clarke, the Sensei (Branch Master and teacher) for Newcastle Branch, located at Salamander Social Welfare Club Hall on Foreshore Dr in Salamander Bay, told News Of The Area, "I started Shorinji Kempo in July 1988 and Newcastle branch was established in September 1993. “Over that time I've seen many people come through the Newcastle branch. “However I'm glad that four kenshi from Newcastle
branch achieved shodan recently. “I hope they can keep practising and developing and helping others within the branch and their community for years to come,” he said. Last month Troy Cormack also successfully received his nidan grading. For the new black belts life is more than Shorinji Kempo, they have families so getting everyone together to train was one of the biggest challenges they faced. However, through dedicated practise both at the Dojo and at home, the four were successfully graded as black belts. Shorinji Kempo is a great way to challenge yourself. It can be physically quite tough at times, although those who participate in the sport all practise to their own limitations. Shorinji Kempo is also a great way of growing your own discipline and self confidence. The Dojo offers mixed classes, generally there are more males than females however women are more than welcome.

There were six entries in all, the others being Cheryl Lloyd and Barrie Carter. The competition was played as a five-game roundrobin.
The competition rules stipulate a 13 hoop game but with a time limit of 50 minutes, with an additional hoop to be played if scores are tied at the end of the allotted time.
At this level, croquet is a cool, calculated game, often described as chess on grass. The games were keenly contested with some excellent croquet played. Pam Barnwell and Trevor
Black were the early leaders with 3 wins from 3 games. Sandy Tawa spoiled Trevor’s run with a 7-2 win while Pam lost to Derek Bull 3-4. The Championship then

increasing the number of courts was to reduce, or even eliminate, the need for half-courts for regular social games; to enable the Club to actively pursue an increase in membership numbers; and to enable the Club to host state or national competitions. State and national competitions require different hoop settings for different competitions, with players in Division 1 competitions having marginally tighter or narrower hoops than players in lower divisions. There are four possible settings. Traditional metal hoops can only be installed approximately to the required setting. The club’s new hoops,

The 2020 field was the strongest in the history of the championship.
