By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN THE Friday for Forests (FFF) roadside demonstration, located at the corner of Mann St and Hyland Park Rd, started in June 2020. It all started when Nambucca Valley Councillor Susan Jenvey, Georgette Allen and members of the Nambucca Valley Conservation Association decided to gather each Friday with other local residents who value local forests. The group hasn’t missed a Friday since starting. Each Friday, FFF stands on the corner displaying a range of different placards. FROM Page 1 that as our supply is extremely limited, no more than around 20 per day, we are prioritising our most vulnerable and essential workers. “The short time between dose 1 and 2 of three weeks (compared to the AstraZeneca 12 weeks between doses) also interrupts our ability to provide ongoing first doses (the second doses come from the same supply). “We are looking forward to an increase in supply over the upcoming months, increasing our ability to offer appointments.” The Nambucca Respiratory Clinic currently offers AstraZeneca vaccinations and has booking times available within the next week (at the time of writing). “In April of this year we received a strong supply of AstraZeneca vaccines and commenced vaccinations. “So far we have vaccinated over 3,000 Nambucca Valley residents and are very proud of

but close by, this centre is currently the closest vaccination centre to the Valley for those wanting to book in for the Pfizer vaccinations prior to 12 July. News Of The Area spoke with the Coffs Harbour Health Campus and were informed that there was a six week wait for the Pfizer vaccination. The next appointment available, at the time of reporting, is late August. Bawrunga Medical Service, located at 1 Marshall Way, Nambucca Heads, offers the AstraZeneca vaccine but does not have the storage capacity to keep the Pfizer vaccination, which needs to be kept at 90 to -60 degrees for longer term storage. Once removed to -15 to -25 degrees it can be kept for two weeks. At the time of reporting the next available AstraZeneca appointment was mid July at Bawrunga. NSW Health is updating and adding vaccination locations so it is

worthwhile keeping updated online. To find an appointment time, search online for “covid vaccine eligibility’ or visit www.covidv a c c i n e . h e a l t h d i r e c t . g o v. a u / eligibility and you will be taken through the steps to identify the best vaccine for you and be given the ability to nominate the closest provider for that vaccine. From there you will be able to book in. It is necessary to get two doses of Pfizer, the second dose 3-4 weeks after the first dose. The two AstraZeneca doses are received 12 weeks apart. Nyambaga ‘Nambucca’ - Gumbaynggirr Dreaming story

AS News Of The Area sat with Gumbaynggirr elder Uncle Micklo Jarrett having a yarn about NAIDOC Week and the importance of the week in the national calendar, Uncle Micklo exclaimed, “Let’s put the story about how Nambucca got it’s name into the paper for NAIDOC Week. “I’d like to share it for those that don’t know it.” With NAIDOC Week upon us, running from 4-11 July, there are celebrations across the country. This year’s theme is Heal Country, or Darrunda Wajaarr in Gumbaynggirr. Some celebrations have been interrupted with the latest Covid-19 restrictions, but the significance of the week is still being acknowledged and celebrated. Uncle Micklo’s suggestion of sharing the Nyambaga dreaming, a story connected to this country and community, explains how Nambucca Heads got its name. “The word for the town Nambucca Heads is derived from the Gumbaynggirr word

Nyambaga. “On the other side of the Nambucca River were people called Ngambaa. “And the word for knee in Gumbaynggirr is called baga baga. “So combine the people from the south of the river, and knee, it became Nyambaga. “Nyambaga is now known as Nambucca. “Back in the dreaming, in the

land. “But his baga baga, his knee, made a bend in the river and that’s where that word for knee came from. “Baga Baga is also the name of the Nambucca Heads clan, the baga baga clan. “Nyambaga is to do with the people from the south called Ngambaa and the Gumbaynggirr word meaning baga baga.”

New COVID check-in mandate

FROM 12 July all workplaces and retail businesses are required to use the NSW Government QR code to check in all visitors. The new regulation includes customers, staff, contractors and delivery people. The NSW Services website states that ‘This is the most effective way to help contact tracers keep us

all safe’. The delta variant of COVID-19 which has caused the latest outbreak in NSW moves quickly and the new contact tracing measures have been put in place to ensure that any cases are able to be traced fast. At Nambucca Heads Pharmacy, the COVID check-in signage is up and staff are requesting all customers to sign-in upon entry, and sign-out upon exit. Anne Marriott, co-owner of

Nambucca Heads Pharmacy said, “It is contact tracing that we are worried about, it puts us at risk. “If that happens we will all be notified by Service NSW if there’s a case that is in the Valley. “It’s a safety thing. “Keeping everyone safe.” Richard Ellis, co-owner of Coastal Curves surf shop in Nambucca Heads spoke with News Of The Area about the new COVID check-in mandate.

“We’ve already had the system in place,” Richard said. “It’s been optional for people to come in and sign in. “Some of our customers have actually said you can’t make us do it. “Which is an interesting take on it.” No longer an option, all customers must sign in from 12 July, and many businesses have begun asking customers to check-in as a protection against COVID.

IN response to the growing concern around mental health for young people in the Valley, a collaboration with local services has organised professional surfer Cooper Chapman to host one of his Good Human Factory Workshops at the Nambucca Surf Club on the afternoon of 18 July. Through his workshops Cooper aims to teach us how to ‘be kind to your mind’. Being a young, active professional surfer, Cooper encourages everyone to think 'what am I doing to take care of my mental health?' He relays the importance of living with values to find purpose in our lives. “Living with key values is a great way to maintain a good outlook on life,” he advocates. Molly Langley from Uniting, Nambucca Heads, told News Of The Area, “I have seen too many young people in the Valley struggling with mental health or taking their own lives because of these struggles and decided that this is not okay, and we must do something to respond to this. “For people with mental health problems not being able to talk about it can be one of the worst parts of the illness. “By bringing people together and talking about mental health we can

Adapting to tourism trends By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN

WITH Covid-19 restrictions on international travel continuing well into 2021, NSW residents have been opting to holiday closer to home. According to Wotif. com data, NSW’s Mid North Coast was a highly trending destination for large parts of 2020, particularly for school holiday travel, with travel interest for Port Macquarie up over 220% and interest for Coffs Harbour up close to 180%*. In the four months following the recommencement of NSW leisure travel in May 2020, intrastate travel interest for NSW destinations spiked by

close to 160% on Wotif.com. In response, some local businesses have pivoted their operations to adjust to fastchanging tourism trends. The Nambucca Heads Bowling Club began offering free motorhome parking in November last year, following the easing of COVID restrictions. A Development Application (DA) was approved for motorhome parking at the site eighteen months ago. It was put on public display, and approximately 180 submissions were received. Mr Phil Coultan, CEO of the Club, advised News Of The Area that of those, 98% were in support of the development.

Mr Coultan said the provision of free motorhome/ caravan parking at the site had a variety of benefits for the local area. “There are benefits for the entire community,” he said. “Not only will visitors spend money at the Bowling Club, they will also spend money in the community. “Visitors will ask staff where to go in the area and the staff are very good at informing them of the different places in the Valley to visit.” There are only six sites available, and they are in high demand. Tony Stokes, Chairman of the Board described the free parking area as a “community service” and said the free sites help attract visitors to

Grouping of Councillor candidates on the ballot paper Two or more Councillor candidates may form a group on the ballot paper, and where eligible, request a group voting square (box above the line) be printed on the ballot paper for the group. Nomination deposit All candidates must pay a nomination deposit of $125 each to the NSW Electoral Commission. These include requirements to operate a campaign account, and to record and disclose political donations and electoral expenditure. In addition, there are caps on political donations and electoral expenditure. Prior to being nominated, candidates and groups can separately apply to the NSW Electoral Commission to be registered for electoral funding regulation purposes. Only once successfully registered is a candidate or group allowed to accept political donations and pay for electoral expenditure. A SPECIAL guest cycled into Nambucca Heads RSL Club last weekend (July 4). Jason Williams arrived as a guest of Wendy Mills, CEO of the Club who had heard about Jason’s life-threatening disease and the 1800km cycle ride he is doing from Burleigh Heads to Sydney and back. “Wendy got in touch and offered us to stay over on the way through Nambucca,” Jason told News Of The Area. @shakerattleandroll2021 is the Instagram handle

for Jason Williams since a rare form of Parkinsonism (MSA-P) took its grip on Jason’s body. He shakes, he rattles and now he’s rolling down the highway on a mission to spread awareness of the disease and raise funds for the financial impact it’s having on his family. He has an incredibly supportive wife, Tina, and four daughters, a loving closeknit family and community. Jason’s mental health has been challenged as he faced the diagnosis that MSA-P

will take his life in two to five years. “I was in a bit of a dark place – this disease messes with your mind, so I thought I’d start doing something for myself,” Jason told News Of The Area. So he got his bike out. “One day I just said to my wife, I think I might ride to Sydney, then I put it up on social media.” Committed, he started getting offers of support. The ride has the backing of generous major sponsors, most notably LIVIN’ a not-forprofit organisation breaking the stigma of mental health, Shake it Up Australia the foundation to find a cure for Parkinson’s, and Victory Ford Coolangatta/Tweed who supplied the support van. “The ride became more important to me when I got the diagnosis that my MSA-P has a lifespan, it’s pretty confronting to hear that.” Until a few years ago Jason had been fit and healthy, working as a fireman with Fire and Rescue NSW on the North Coast, latterly as Deputy Captain at 514 Banora Point. Handling issues of dementia IN his early sixties, Frank is diagnosed with a relatively aggressive form of early onset dementia. Aware that he is not well, he asks two of his children, Pat and Betty to help him organise his affairs. Pat and Betty are concerned that Frank does not possess the requisite capacity to make a will and they ask him if he already has one. Frank cannot remember. Worried about Frank’s deteriorating condition, Pat and Betty book an appointment with a solicitor who specialises in estate planning. The solicitor advises that a diagnosis of dementia does not necessarily mean that Frank is unable to make a will. He explains the legal test for capacity, being that Frank can execute a will so long as he: understands what a will is, is aware in general terms of the nature of his assets, is aware of the beneficiaries who can make a claim on his estate and can evaluate the strengths of any potential claims. Frank has an interview with the solicitor in which Frank explains that his wife passed away three years ago and he is survived by three children, Pat, Betty and Rhonda. Although Frank is close to Pat and Betty, he has not spoken to Rhonda for over twenty years after a falling out. After the interview with Frank, the solicitor is satisfied that he possesses capacity and drafts Frank a simple will in which he gifts $100,000 of his $600,000 estate to Rhonda and splits the residue equally between Pat and Betty. The solicitor requests that Frank obtain a letter from his Doctor confirming capacity. The letter is promptly received by the solicitor and placed in the solicitor’s safe with the original will. Valley Artist in the Spotlight: Karly Lane By Tamara MCWILLIAM KARLY Lane has been writing for most of her life. Being an avid reader with a huge imagination helped form the foundations for Karly’s writing. “I didn’t really have any kind of writing ambitions when I thought about what it was I wanted to do,” Karly told News Of The Area. “I didn’t start writing with the intent to become published until I was in my thirties. “I read a variety of genres but really enjoyed suspense and a bit of military action/ adventure type of books, like Andy McNab and Robert Ludlum but was often frustrated by so much technical jargon and the fact women in the stories usually were killed off to move the hero along in his revenge quest. “So, I decided to write my own books…this being a little more tricky than I first imagined,” she said. And write her own books she did. In April 2011, Karly’s debut novel was released, and ‘North Star’ was just the beginning of a long list of best-selling novels. Now with eighteen successful novels published through Allen and Unwin, Karly Lane is a household name throughout Australia, recognised as being one of the nation’s best selling authors. Karly’s talents don’t stop there. Not only is Karly a traditionally published author, she has also had vast experience and success in self-publishing having released a further eight books in different genres to her Rural Australian books published through Allen and Unwin.

Karly’s most recent release ‘Take me Home’ was released on May 4. Dancing to success against the Covid-19 odds By Tamara MCWILLIAM

IT has been a tough run for the dancers at the Valley Performing Arts Centre, with Covid-19 shutting down all dance studios for months during the 2020 pandemic. It was a time of celebration when the restrictions were finally lifted and the young dancers in the Nambucca Valley were able to perform again. With the ATOD Student Technical Examinations due to take place on June 27 and 28, the entire Valley Performing Arts Centre family waited with baited breath to see what the restrictions were going to be with the most recent flare up of Covid-19. Thankfully, the ATOD exams were allowed to go ahead. “All our dancers were faced with having to mask-up on Sunday as the Covid-19 restrictions were updated,” said Alison Launt, Principal/ Owner of Valley Performing Arts Centre. “Watching my dancers embracing this new challenge while they had to perform at their best was remarkable as no one complained and resulted in all of them passing their exams with astounding results. “I am forever bursting with pride for my dancers as I pass my own passions on to them.” Alison opened the dance studio in 1984 and has seen thousands of young Nambucca Valley locals dance through her doors. As a qualified dance teacher registered with the Australian Teachers of Dancing, Glenn Wood Tap and the Acrobatic

Dance Association, Alison was bursting with pride as she spoke of her students achievements.. Together with the very talented Chloe Gleeson, Alison teaches a range of genres such as Classical Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, and Acrobatic Dance. “Our classes are run in a caring and nurturing environment where we encourage the individuality of our students to shine through,” Alison said. “We are an inclusive space where we believe that a dancer doesn’t come in a particular set body type, but we are all designed to dance. “Our classes are designed for beginners to advanced (pre-professional) and from three years to adults. “Our dancers are among the most talented on the North Coast as we have won many eisteddfods both as a group and as soloists. “Dancers can customise their dance training and do as little as two classes or as many as nine classes per week,” Alison told News Of The Area. THE Nambucca Strikers went down 2-1 to the Orara Valley Dingoes in another thriller at Coronation Park last Tuesday in the North Coast Football women’s second division. The Strikers started strongly with a Desley Townley volley from an Alex Hapgood cross to open the scoring in the third minute. Strikers women’s coach Rhys Jones said, “The battle raged in midfield, our girls competed for everything, hounded and harassed the Dingoes play makers, while always looking for the quick counter attack.” The Dingoes then bit back, with an equaliser from a wicked deflection that crept in off the post. “Halftime and the girls were still upbeat with encouraging words from skipper Kyiesha Cohen who kept the focus on competing for every ball,” said Rhys. A WEEK of overcast weather couldn’t dampen the spirit of the Nambucca Heads bowlers as many players took to the green. This week saw some of the biggest fields battle it out on the green. On Wednesday the club selected triples that looked like being a field of 40, except some players decided to nominate two or three times and a couple of late scratches saw the field reduced to 32. The winners of the day were Bruce Mason and Cec Smith. Second place went to Tony Stokes, visitor Steve Huff and Ray Long who showed no mercy on their opposition. Third place went to Grant Lawrence, Mangrove Bill Coughlan and Dennis Graham. The lucky losers were Doug Cedelland and Ken Darcy

In the other quarter final Grant Lawrence showed that you don’t need to be old to play bowls when he beat Graham Horne 31-14 and is still waiting for everyone to shout. The semi finals were played Saturday afternoon and drew plenty of spectators. The first semi Final saw Graham Hunt show his experience and skills by defeating Grant Lawrence 31 - 21. While Tony managed to claw back the margin and tried valiantly to catch Ken, the lead was too big and Ken prevailed 31 - 18. The final was played on a sunny Sunday afternoon which enabled players to recover from their gruelling schedule the previous day. Triple X mountain bike race rescheduled PLANNING was all but finalised for the upcoming Triple X mountain bike race when new Covid-19 restrictions were announced recently. As a result of these restrictions event organisers from the Nambucca Valley Cycle Club have decided to move the event from Sunday 11 July to Sunday 29 August 2021. The Triple X race is the Club’s biggest annual event, and is held at the Jacks Ridge Mountain Bike Park in the nearby Nambucca State Forest. The race attracts riders

Michael McCoy is back with a second season of this behind-closed-gates series, taking a look at the diverse ways Australians have adapted to make the most out of their slice of this country. Tonight, McCoy takes a look at the dream garden of a Sydney couple who live in a converted factory and have designed a unique slice of greenery among the harsh concrete and brick surrounds. With an aim to return the former industrial site to mother nature, they’ve achieved a stunning feat that will have you scribbling down notes for your own landscaping plans.

IT was a soggy Saturday 3 July and the Nambucca Valley Lions travelled to Coffs Harbour to take on ladder leaders Coffs Breakers for Round 10 of the North Coast AFL. The Lions have been battling all season and coming up against the Breakers, who have only lost one game this year, was going to be a tough task. A group of lesser men may have crumbled before the Breakers attack but the lads from the Nambucca Valley showed once again why they are a team not to be taken lightly. On paper, it looked like an easy win for the Breakers, a team with one loss, versing a team with one win, but the mighty Lions roared and fought hard all game and at the halftime whistle, the Breakers were rocked, heads down, walking into the sheds leading by only 11 points. If you had walked into the Lions’ change room at half time, you’d be lulled into thinking that they were the team in front. The lads were pumped, here they were, at the Breakers home ground, taking on the best team in the competition and absolutely giving it to them. CONTINUED Page 12
