Nambucca Heads Big 4 Craft Group presented Mr Mark Tanner, Operations Manager for Hope For The Homeless (HFTH) with 67 knitted beanies on Tuesday 20 July. of the Big 4 Craft Group. There was a Hope Shop located in Nambucca Heads which had to close recently owing to high rental costs which HFTH could not afford. In speaking with News Of The Area Di Sheaves, the organiser of the craft group, said that the members, “Decided that they needed a project, and all agreed that the idea of knitting beanies for the homeless was a great thing to do.” Hope for The Homeless is based in Coffs Harbour. The Hope Shops are stocked with donated goods, the sale of which goes back into the Hope For The Homeless charity. Hope For The Homeless is a 100% not-for-profit organisation set up by Mr Dean Evers five years ago with the aim to assist the homeless. They offer cheap clothing and goods to the homeless, and also help people to find secure housing by connecting them with agencies. The second-hand goods in the Hope shops are available for purchase for those who love to shop second hand, and know that their money is going to a good cause. NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has implemented tougher rules on face masks in the News South Wales fight against the Delta

THE MID North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) have reported the Mid North Coast is currently COVID free and they want your help to keep it that way by getting tested, vaccinated and staying safe. “There are no local cases, no sewage detections and testing numbers remain high with five thousand two hundred tests conducted in the past seven days,” a MNC spokesperson revealed on Monday. There have been record numbers of people getting tested over the last two weeks for COVID-19. The MNCLHD has experienced increased testing since the Bondi cluster began in mid-June but the numbers rose significantly over the last two weeks. Mr Stewart Dowrick, Chief

“Workers must also abide by the Stay Home Orders.” News Of The Area contacted NSW Police for information regarding the possibility of the construction worker breaching the Public Health Orders by attending the Hoey Moey in Coffs Harbour but NSW Police Force responded that, “Following extensive inquiries, no breaches of the Public Health Orders were identified in this matter.”

AS the Mid North Coast relaxes this week with the news of no known COVID-19 cases transmitted by a Sydney construction worker’s visit for work to the region, many have been asking the following questions. How was it that a construction worker from Sydney was able to work in regional NSW despite Sydney being in lockdown? What are the Public Health Order COVID rules for metropolitan workers in regional NSW? And were any Public Health Orders breached? Firstly let’s rewind to important dates in the last few weeks. THE Lifetime Connect Wellness centre was established in 2020 being a space where seniors in the Nambucca Valley community can gather for a chat, socialise, share ideas and to experience new things. The Lifetime Connect Wellness Centre is located at the old St Patrick Primary School in Wallace Street, Macksville. “Our vision at the Lifetime Connect Wellness Centre is to have a dedicated space for seniors to visit and participate in community life,” Katie Griffiths told News Of The Area.

The centre hosts a large variety of projects, workshops and classes that are group-based and offer the opportunity to develop, maintain and support independent living, wellbeing, reenabling and social interactions. “One of the favorite programs is the seated Dance-Yoga,” Katie said. “This class is for all levels and abilities. “The class is full of fun and laughter. “You enjoy movement and singing from the comfort of your chair.” Some of the other activities include ‘Fine Art Fridays’, cards and

Volkswagen Spectacular to go ahead

ORGANISERS of the Nambucca Valley’s iconic Volkswagen Spectacular, say the event will still take place in 2021. The Spectacular will be held in Macksville between 24 October and 1 November. Donna Pell said, “Those who had bookings need to email us and we will be happy to rollover bookings for the new period.” The 2021 event will see the Spectacular coming up to its 37th year. In 1987 Mark and Donna Pell owned a Volkswagen repairs and spare parts business in Nambucca Heads. Mark thought it would be a great idea to organise a VW enthusiasts’ event on the Mid North Coast and it has been running ever since. “The first event attracted 110 VWs from as far as Sydney and Brisbane,” Donna said. In the early days the event was held every year, then in the

late 90’s, when the organising every year became too much, the event was moved to every two years. “It takes approximately 12 months to organise the show, as we do the accommodation bookings, the organising of the events, and sponsoring merchandise.” The event is a boost to local businesses, and funds are raised for selected local charities throughout the event. The week-long event opens at 5:00 pm Sunday 24 October at Macksville Showground with a free welcome BBQ dinner. Monday 25 October starts with breakfast at 7:00 am run by Rotary/Lions. ON the evening of Friday 23 July another lion statue was stolen from the Lions Lookout in Nambucca Heads. This is the third lion to be stolen since May this year from the lookout. A second lion remains in place, although thieves pushed the lion over - perhaps in an attempt to steal that as well. q

Staff from the Nambucca Heads RSL righted the remaining Lion. The matter has been reported to the Nambucca Heads Police. These lions were located further down the path than previously stolen lions, standing as welcoming statues before stepping onto the whale watching platform. It would have taken considerable effort and planning to extract the heavy lion.

News Of The Area spoke with Don Parveez, long standing Lions Club member who has been heavily involved in the building and the beautification of Lions Park. Mr Parveez is now retired from the Club but is continuing to work with the Lions as required. Macksville Flood Forum – the report is out By Andrea FERRARI

COMMUNICATION throughout the community is one of the main concerns bubbling up to the top of the SES Flood Forum Report just released. Twenty-six people, most of whom were directly affected by the March floods, attended May’s SES Flood Forum in Macksville, to share their personal experiences, concerns and feedback. NSW SES Community Capability Officer for Northern Zone Steve Lawrence, who opened the forum, told News Of The Area, “The main themes of the forum included the lack of information, before and during the event; about evacuations and the severity of the flooding, difficulties in people getting through on the SES 132500 emergency assistance phone line, access to sandbags and the community’s limited knowledge of key flood heights and where to find information during such emergencies. “From here the SES will look to work with the community and other stakeholders to prioritise and action the suggestions for improvement contained in the report,” said Steve.

Critical to the efficiency of the emergency services is the limited size of the force. The Action Plan NSW SES has committed to undertake the following. First up, the SES will make its report accessible to the local community through emailing it to all those who attended. The SES will convene a local meeting to assess interest, establish terms of reference and engage local community representatives to create a local action plan from the information collected and articulated in this report. Post-event flood forums will continue across the region like this one - to listen to community concerns, address issues in liaison with relevant other parties and help build community resilience.

The report will be made available to other agencies so that they can consider ways of improving their own preparedness, communication, response and transition to recovery. The SES will continue to work with Council, Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and other stakeholders to improve information (and access to it), warning systems (including communication of information, warnings and orders), and evacuation arrangements. With 26 interested members of the public attending the Flood Forum in May, it was noted Department of Primary Industry representation was absent. NSW SES now plans to set up alternatives to the 132 500 number for major events.

Jarad paints V Wall tribute to Benny

BENNY Bop, the well-loved Nambucca born-and-bred lad who passed in 2019 aged 23 years, this week had a rockpainting on the V Wall created for him by traveling mural artist Jarad Danby. Ben’s mum, Lesa Cryer, who has lived and worked with her family in Nambucca for 33 years, has admired Jarad’s work and was thrilled when she saw on the Nambucca Valley Community Facebook Group that Jarad was around the Valley for a few days. Lesa told News Of The Area, “Ben’s site where he passed was removed by known people; our Council then made sure that any flowers etc were removed on a regular basis. “Seeing a post of Jarad’s artwork, I asked him if he was ever down this way, could he do a rock at our local V Wall. “He was finally here, and he made contact. “Ben loved his fishing and has a site (YouTube and Facebook) called BOPS Fishing, so Jarad and I decided on a marlin to honour Ben. “Friends and family now

THE Raku firing technique is one of the oldest techniques in pottery. In Japan, Raku refers to the potter’s family name that has been passed down for over four hundred years. All of nature’s elements are used during this traditional practise. The pot is made from the material found in the EARTH. It is then placed in the heat of an intense FIRE before being plunged into WATER to stop the burning process and left to cool in the AIR. The Coastal Claymakers are delighted to be preparing for an upcoming Raku firing event on Saturday July 31. “Winter is ideal for the ancient Japanese technique of Raku Firing,” Michaela from the Coastal Claymakers told News Of The Area. At this event a simple firing technique will be used, where bisque-fired pottery is fired in a small basic kiln. The temperature will reach approximately one thousand degrees centigrade before the pot is then removed as it is glowing hot with long metal tongs. “Your adrenaline will be pumping when you are lifting a red hot, glowing pot with long metal tongs out of the small kiln,” Michaela said. There will be a metal bin to the side of the kiln that will be lined with combustible materials such as sawdust.

Nambucca District Vehicle Rescue Association winds up

THE Nambucca District Vehicle Rescue Association (VRA) has been operating in the Nambucca Valley for 41 years since its inception in the early 1970s. Following a long history of service to the community, the VRA has ended. The Association began in response to a series of horrific accidents on the Pacific Highway. “There was carnage here for a long time,” said Stuart Holmes, Deputy Captain at the final AGM. “Our part of the Highway was a major part of the fatigue zone, for both truck drivers and car drivers.” Membership of the squad has been made up of many locals, all of whom were on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist as required. VRA Rescue NSW are primary responders for Road Crash Rescue, General Land Rescue and other specialist rescue operations involving Emergency Service personnel. All VRA responders are

volunteers who undergo training. Members are accredited by the Minister for Emergency Services in rescue operations. They are ready to lend “a helping hand, anywhere, anytime”.

IF you can smell it, you’re already breathing it. That’s the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) warning to the community as residents hunker into the chilly temperatures, stoking their woodheaters…and smoking out their neighbours. Macksville residents, remaining anonymous, are concerned about the smoky atmosphere experienced around parts of town most evenings. Lack of knowledge about how to light and maintain a safe wood fire in the home is the main reason for smokefilled air especially during the evening. Education is required according to the EPA and

welcomed by the Macksville residents. Local councils receive hundreds of complaints about neighbourhood wood smoke every winter and endeavour to educate residents about correct wood heater use. The EPA states that woodsmoke is made up of very small particles that can be taken directly into the lungs and contains several toxic and cancer-causing agents. Many people don’t realize that smoke from their wood heaters and fireplaces can present a real hazard to their neighbours, causing physical discomfort for those with respiratory problems, especially older people and young children. PENNY, in her 80’s, has no children of her own. She is assisted with her housework, laundry and shopping by her niece, Diane. Penny tells Diane that she needs to go into a nursing home and asks her to arrange for the sale of her home. Penny signs an Authorisation to pay the whole of the proceeds of sale to Diane, which Diane delivers to the solicitor acting on the sale of the home. In accordance with the Authorisation, at settlement $500,000 is deposited into Diane’s account. Diane pays Penny $50,000 and uses the rest of the money to pay out her mortgage and fund an overseas holiday. When Penny finds-out about the holiday, she commences action against Diane, alleging that she held the $500,000 on trust and demands for the money to be repaid to her. It is argued on Penny’s behalf, that at the time that the Authorisation was signed, she was elderly and physically unwell and that she received no legal advice, but no medical evidence is put before the Court. Diane claims the money was a gift, and that on the basis that allegations of dishonesty are “grave”, that the standard of proof in terms of evidence had not been satisfied. In considering the evidence, the Court states that the evidence of both parties was unreliable, but at the end of the day, it was Penny who had the onus to prove her case against Diane. The Court ultimately rules that there was insufficient evidence to establish that any monies were loaned to Diane and that there was no evidence to establish that the monies were to be held on trust for Penny. Discarded fishing tackle causing injuries to marine life

FOLLOWING calls for help from concerned locals and visitors, WIRES Mid North Coast branch has rescued four pelicans in recent weeks all needing veterinary assistance to remove fishing line and hooks from their legs, wings and stomachs. Discarded fishing tackle is unfortunately a major cause of often fatal injuries to many of our river and coastal dwelling wildlife especially seabirds. WIRES Mid North Coast has a dedicated team of local volunteers who are trained to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife, however they were very grateful to have the support of vet Dr Duan March to help contain and rescue these huge birds. Dr March has extensive marine wildlife experience and is currently on sabbatical leave so was able to lend a much needed hand. THE inaugural Coffs Coast Festival of Motor Sport was launched last Thursday as Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh hailed the region as “the motorsport capital of New South Wales”. The exciting addition to

the Mid North Coast calendar will see a range of motorsport events staged at venues from Grafton to Kempsey and the Festival will run from 13 to 28 November. Event President Bob Carle said, “There has been a huge amount of interest in the Festival.

NAMBUCCA Heads Squash Club served up a new competition last Wednesday with the match of the round being a classic contest of experience versus youth between Peter Budd and Jake Hicks. Peter has been playing at the Nambucca Squash Club for over 40 years and the former line one player had his work cut out against teenager Jake Hicks. Peter is in his sixties and relies on shots and experience whereas Jake is on the rise after being promoted from line three and is brimming with energy and skill. Club President Bruce Graham said it was an interesting contest of fine margins. “It was a really tight match but on this occasion it was the experience of Peter that

IT is with great delight that we welcome back the Nambucca Heads men’s bowls President, Ray Hunt. After a stint in hospital, friends and enemies were excited to see the new and improved look of Ray back at the club. Wednesday club selected triples attracted a large quality group of bowlers. The winner for the day was a pairs game of Elaine Fleming and Bruce Mason, which means that extra $15 can go towards the new green. Second place went to Mick Edwards, Peter Wide Bowls Wallis and Smoking Joe Franck. Third place was won by Maurie Roberts, David Moore and Peter Meehan. The lucky losers were Ray Platt, Danny Curran and Peter Dawe. The lucky bowler was Peter Meehan who collected $15, but unfortunately for Peter he couldn’t collect the Jackpot of $180, much to

A WEEK of great achievements by members of our Club. Darcy Habgood, daughter of PGA Professional at Nambucca Heads, Paul Habgood, has qualified for golf’s biggest amateur event, the U.S. Amateur. Darcy is on a golf scholarship at Washington State University and has a World Amateur ranking of 611, where she scored an average of 73.88 over 16 rounds in 5 tournaments in her 2019-2020 season as a Cougar. Club General Manager, Johnathon Zirkler said “Qualifying for the US Amateur is an amazing achievement, it’s pretty much the number one amateur golf event in the world. “We are all incredibly proud of Darcy’s achievements.” From all your friends at NHIGC, Good Luck, Darcy. The Women’s Pennants ‘Dolphins’ Team had a very tough match against ForsterTuncurry at Kempsey last Sunday, with 3 matches going down the 19th – nail biting stuff. When it comes to saucy TV shows on Aussie television, perhaps Love Island, Bachelor in Paradise or even Outlander might spring to mind… but tonight it’s chef Adam Liaw who’ll leave viewers wanting more. He’s joined in the kitchen by radio personality Yumi Stynes and Benjamin Law (The Family Law), who are showcasing their favourite sauces. If the pair’s earlier appearances are anything to go by, the condiments conjured up in this episode are sure to be tasty, simple and the perfect accompaniment for any dish.

They say that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and the surprising connections between the geeky guys and gorgeous gals on this Lego Masters-meets-Love Island reality series really have proven that. Rhys Jones praised his goalkeeper’s instincts and dedication. “An outstanding achievement from a very experienced 17 year old who has already won a NPL championship, representing Sydney metro and Northern NSW. “It only goes to show practice, hard work and dedication really pays off,” said Rhys. Coach Rhys Jones was philosophical. “Time ran out and so did Nambucca’s luck. “This game was a credit to both teams, it was played in great spirit, it was hard and tough with no player giving quarter the way football should be played. “Urunga are a credit to their coach Dave Duvall who plays with skill, patience and resilience. “While the loss does end Nambucca’s mini winning streak the team wasn't disappointed, we are by far the most inexperienced team in the league, with 80 percent never played before, they are growing very quickly, learning all the time, we are not being beaten by 7 or 8 goals, but only by the odd goal. “This team is developing and with experience and continued development will become a force in the league. “Next game is against Woolgooga on Saturday at Coronation Park, Nambucca with a 1pm kick off,” said Rhys.
