Mr Woo is the maths teacher who makes mathematics fun and relatable. His learning resources are used by students all around the world. His YouTube tutorials started when he helped a student who was sick, now his channel has over one million followers and more than thirty-six million views. News Of The Area was invited to spend the morning with Mr Woo as he interacted with the children and staff of Bowraville Central School. As he started interacting

its shorelines, waterways and beaches following the severe rain and floods in March. The Nambucca River clean up follows the Corindi River completed just prior. EPA Director Incident Management and Environmental Health Arminda Ryan said the contractor, Avcon Projects Australasia, had done an incredible job as their work neared its conclusion and there were many other people who also contributed to the extensive clean-up. “The clean-up involved a significant amount of planning and combined innovative technology and aerial surveillance with on the ground intelligence from the public, community groups, council and other agencies to locate debris and waste,” Ms Ryan said.

“The end result means we have an enormous amount of debris now removed from the river which benefits the local community and the extensive marine life in the Mid North Coast region.” Some of the debris collected included furniture, portaloos, tractor and car tyres, tree trunks and branches and chemical drums. The clean-up has spanned from Forster Beach, down the Nambucca River past the Pacific Highway to Yarranbella.

Further north at Corindi River the debris included, “a substantial amount of debris from surrounding agricultural activities like plastic sheeting, ‘grow bags’ and containers all part of the clean-up.” The clean up of both rivers is vital to keep the waste from entering the Solitary Islands Marine Conservation Park. Ms Ryan thanked the community for their patience during the cleanup. Eddie Woo visits Nambucca Valley schools

with the year 2 and 3 students of Bowraville Central School, Jodie Hartman, trainer with the mathematics growth team, tolds New Of The Area, “Eddie Woo is the Leader of the mathematics growth team, part of the mathematics strategy which is a premier’s priority right across NSW. “A team of ten trainers are placed in various locations and Eddie has been coming to all of the schools to visit and see what we have been doing with our staff and students.” As the session with year 2 and 3 progressed, Mr Woo’s amazing energy was contagious. His love of mathematics was obvious and his connection with students and teaching was admirable. Spending most of the time on the floor with the students Mr Woo had the room filled with laughter and vibrance as his lesson was fun and exciting for them all. As it was time to leave the children vied for Mr Woo’s attention making it hard for him to say goodbye. A selection of students ranging from year 7 to year 12 patiently awaited Mr Woo for the second session in the library. When discussing mathematics to these students he said, “Maths for me is a little

like this pair of glasses sitting on my face. “Without these glasses on my face the world is sort of blurry and confusing. “Mathematics is like glasses bringing the world into clarity for me.” The students’ eyes were glued to Mr Woo as he continued to speak. When the mathematics lesson began he used another game, only this time the game was more suited to the older group of students. Laughter filled the room with friendly banter as the students played maths games against each other. Mr Woo’s ability to engage with this age group was mesmerizing to watch. When asked about travelling to schools and having one on one time with students, Mr Woo told News of the Area, “It is such an enjoyable thing, and all of value to me. “The student connection is the most important part.” The time flew by and the students chatted with Mr Woo as they lined up for a group photo. Mr Woo spent the rest of the afternoon with the teaching staff of Bowraville Central School and imparted his wisdom of mathematics, teaching and his unique ability to connect with students, and encourage them to learn,

but most of all, how to make mathematics fun. Eddie Woo was travelling to Alstonville on Wednesday and Woolgoolga on Thursday. Stuarts Point sewage system progress By Brooke LEWIS KEMPSEY Shire Council has struck an agreement with Kempsey Local Aboriginal Land Council that will clear the way for a sewage treatment plant to service Stuarts Point, Fishermans Reach and Grassy Head, a major step forwards for a project that has been slow to progress since the state government allocated $6.63 million to it in 2016. The resolution of the land claim on Friday, May 21, will enable the purchase of land located to the north of the waste transfer station on Fishermans Reach Road that’s “crucial to the delivery of the sewer project in the area”, Kempsey Shire Council said in a statement released the same day. “Following comprehensive negotiations … Kempsey Local Aboriginal Land Council have agreed to withdraw their undetermined land claims to allow for the construction of a sewerage treatment plant for the community of Stuarts Point,” according to the statement, which notes that the “historic” deed of agreement is a first for the

The community’s calls for the sewer system, which has been a local topic of discussion for decades, took on a new sense of urgency after the March floods resulted in at least 45 homes being evacuated when rising groundwater caused the septic tanks currently in place to spill into properties and streets. Kempsey Shire Council Director of Operations and Planning Robert Fish said the

sewerage project is now in the design and investigation phase, with consultants engaged or in the process of being engaged. “Once this phase is completed an expression of interest is planned to be called in 2022 for tenders for a detailed design and construction contract,” he said. “Construction is anticipated in the latter part of 2022.” As well as meaning the

Smith advises that while the station itself is not staffed 24 hours, there is 24 hr coverage. The Acting Inspector said he wants the community to know if they have a matter to report, the police will attend. And if there is something that needs to be investigated, they will investigate. “Don’t be discouraged if you find that there is no one at the police station because that means that our

police are out attending jobs or patrolling,” said Acting Inspector Smith. “Call the police station. “If you call Nambucca your call will go through to Macksville, if Macksville is unable to answer the phone then diverts to Kempsey, “Kempsey will create a radio message and our police will come and see you. “They will have your information and they will make contact with you,” he said.

Acting Inspector Smith said drug use remains a massive concern for all of society, and that the flow on to other issues is huge. Domestic violence reports are also on the increase. The Acting Inspector said however, that compared to other areas, the Nambucca

Kempsey Shire Council estimates that the connection of properties to the sewerage system will commence in mid to late 2023 and has stated that there will be dunal discharge of the treated effluent, in line with recommendations from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority and NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. “Dunal discharge is the endorsed option of treated effluent discharge, like that in place at South West Rocks,” Fish said. “The planned location is on the east side of the Macleay Arm at the northern end of the Stuarts Point village.”

Australian Red Cross Distinguished Team Award “When COVID restrictions limited movement and personal contact, the Nambucca Team called returned Australians in hotel quarantine, assisting them to

access services and support. “At the peak of the Pandemic in 2020 the Team sent handwritten thank you cards to our local frontline workers during lockdown to

show our support.” Team members have continued to support the community in the aftermath of the black summer fires, conducting Preparedness

Sessions, attending Community Recovery and Wellbeing events. Over the past eight weeks, team members have been volunteering in the Macksville

Recovery Centre, providing support and Psychological First Aid to those impacted by the recent devastating floods in the Nambucca Valley.

THE Nambucca Valley Emergency Services Team has been awarded the Australian Red Cross Distinguished Team Award. Charity Bingo at the Bowlo

THE Nambucca Heads CWA branch holds Charity Bingo the first Tuesday of every month at the Nambucca Head Bowling Club. Donna Funnell is the event organiser and showcases a fun-filled morning for all who wish to attend. All monies raised from the charity bingo this coming financial year will be going to support the State CWA

medical research of Ovarian Cancer, rural Doctor’s bursary and locally, the local schools end of year presentation day. “Each year CWA elects a medical issue to be studied with money raised for the research, thus Ovarian Cancer was selected for the 2021-2020 period,” Branch Secretary Kathleen Miller told News Of The Area. Having seen other statues made by Jason at Earnshaw Engineering they decided to ask him to make the statue. Jason Earnshaw also contributed to the making of the pelican that perched at the V-Wall from December 2020 until May this year. This popular statue was

loaned to the Shire Council by Nambucca Heads High School, and was created by students at the school under the tutelage of experienced Gunggari Aboriginal teacher Gary Cattanach, working in conjunction with Jason. According to Mr Cattanach the concept behind building the pelican and loaning it to Council was that, “We can beautify our environment through art.” There was always the understanding that the pelican was on loan to the Council. According to Gary, “The pelican was not built for the V-Wall, and would not be able to be permanently displayed there because it is made from the wrong materials. It’s a harsh environment.”

DRIVING along Riverside Drive, just near Nambucca Heads RSL, the large pelican perched on the side of the road is hard to miss. The 2.4m bird has its bill open, perhaps ready to catch a fish… or is it just having a laugh? News Of The Area investigated this pelican statue on the invitation of Jeff Gardener and Lyndl Barrett, the owners of Pelicans Landing Gardening Centre. IN an exciting opportunity for all students across the Nambucca Valley, during the school holidays on June 29 all students interested can attend a free workshop and farm tour. q

This fabulous free event is proudly funded by the BCRRF as a part of the ‘Moving Forward Bushfire Community Grant’. It is open to all students from kindergarten to year 12 in the Nambucca Valley.

At this event, students will be participating in an onsite farm tour and experience a working dog and livestock demonstration. There will be mini sessions and hour-long workshops held throughout the day.

Students will be introduced to a large range of agriculture topics, giving them insight into how and where our food and fibres are produced and what the importance of agriculture has on our day to day lives.

Macksville Community Gardens

NATIONAL Volunteers Week saw News Of The Area catch up with Gary Hallinan, Project Officer for the Macksville Community Garden. The Macksville Community Garden is fully funded by Lifetime Connect Macksville, and Gary has been with the garden since its inception for the last twelve and a half years. Everyone is invited to enjoy the pleasures of gardening every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30 am – 12 noon. Morning tea is serviced each session.

There is a small library collection, and an undercover propagating area. Gary said, “In the early days the garden supplied produce for Meals on Wheels, but, eventually, as the Meals on Wheel program expanded their demand for produce was greater than the garden could produce.” Over the last twelve years the volunteers have grown, and there are usually about 11 – 12 volunteers per day. Numbers change with the seasons, with those who prefer warm or cooler weather conditions for working outdoors, and of

BELLINGEN Shire Council, Coffs Harbour City Council and Nambucca Valley Council have teamed up to deliver a regional campaign to help educate residents about sustainable ways to dispose of food scraps and garden waste. The Let’s Get Composting campaign will run across the three Local Government Areas for the next year. The Councils and MidWaste Regional Waste Forum secured funding from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to develop the campaign

to encourage residents to put their food scraps and garden waste in the green bin or compost at home in an effort to keep this valuable resource out of landfill. As part of the “Let’s Get Composting” Coffs Coast program, 10,000 kitchen caddies will be available for free for residents from 1 July 2021, making it easier to collect food scraps for disposal in the green wheelie bin. A survey of Coffs Coast residents found most people know food scraps and garden waste should be disposed

of in the green bin to be composted by Council, and around half are already doing the right thing. However, an audit of kerbside wheelie bins across the region found up to 40 percent of the contents of red-lidded rubbish bins was food scraps and garden waste that should be placed in the green-lidded bins, indicating a significant opportunity to improve resource recovery rates in local communities. Simultaneous Storytime at St Marys By Andrea FERRARI

ST MARYS Primary school students invited their neighbouring Bowraville Central School and Bowraville Preschool friends to participate in Australia’s National Simultaneous Storytime Event on Wednesday 19 May. In line with St Mary’s playbased education philosophy, the K-2 teachers designed and created space-themed investigations and exciting learning environments for the children to explore. The K-2 teaching team at St Mary’s Primary school told News Of The Area, “Our preschool children became immersed in an outer space wonderland whereby our little aliens and astronauts were particularly intrigued with the slippery, slimy alien goo. “They practiced launching homemade flying saucers into the universe and then exploring ways to measure the distances between planets.” Tales of imaginary space travel were shared from the rocket constructions while others prepared space food together at the cosmic café.

Spacesuits were donned in preparation for launch while some students chose to enjoy the relaxation of the space library and the collage creation station. “To complete the intergalactic mission, our students settled in to countdown to join thousands of other Australian school students to simultaneously watch and listen to an astronaut from the International Space Station read the text Give me some Space! “Miss Sam and Tanya were busy in the kitchen cooking up an intergalactic feast for our hungry crew.” Rocket dogs, moon rocks, astronaut ice-cream, galaxy scrolls and moon landing meteorites were just a few of the treats on offer for the special space themed banquet. “The essence of the Storytime event was to foster a love for reading and literacy and provide the opportunity for our students to connect and build relationships with their peers in the community whilst learning new skills, collaborating and having fun. “Uncle Mark Smith, Indigenous Educator farewelled our visitors in Gumbaynggirr language with the important message from the book - care for our wonderful planet, Ngarrayngga ngiyambandi nyirrnaa birraarl.”

IN 2020 when the announcement was made to cease all singing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Bowraville Theatre Singers sadly complied. All shows were cancelled and all singing practise sessions were banned. Due to ‘singing in a choir’ being classed as a high-risk activity, it has been one of the last Covid-19 restrictions to be lifted. What does this mean for the choir? This talented group of Nambucca Valley singers have now finally joined forces again to make musical magic after a year-long sabbatical. The Bowraville Theatre Singers came into being over

20th Anniversary for Nambucca Natural Horsemanship Club By Andrea FERRARI

CELEBRATING its 20th anniversary, the Nambucca Natural Horsemanship Club (NNHC) is gathering members past and present, along with anyone who wants to attend, to a tea party on Saturday 11 June, at 2pm at Macksville Showgrounds. “Formed in Macksville in 2001, by a small group of horse enthusiasts, the club was built on the founding members’ passion to develop their natural horsemanship skills and knowledge,” Nicole Murphie, Publicity Officer for the Club told News Of The Area. Testimony to the strength of NNHC, several of the foundation members are still current and very active Club members, riding and enjoying NNHC activities with their horses. “Natural horsemanship involves the use of education q

and psychology to get results and have fun with your horse, with the focus on achieving the kind of relationship where your horse is a willing and co-operative partner. “Club members have horse partners that range from the very small to the very large, the very young to the very old, and represent breeds and types from all over the world. “The common theme is the love between each owner and their equine partner.” The founding principles of the Club are Natural Horsemanship, and although the initial Club focus was on the teachings of Pat Parelli, today there are many influential clinicians and experts providing guidance and encouragement to the development of Club member skills. Further development can be gleaned from the Club’s library material,

encouragement of fellow members, and the many Cluborganised clinics. NNHC has weekly events, mostly at Macksville Showground, to practice, socialise and share information, as well as campouts, trail rides, bush rides and riding on the beach. Club members have participated in natural horsemanship demonstrations for nursing home residents, at local Agricultural Shows, Riding for the Disabled centres, along with horsemanship tournaments, cattle drives and mail rides. Historic Bowraville Theatre reopens with First Nations shows By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN

BOWRAVILLE Theatre is a not-for-profit space putting on performances to provide community engagement and entertainment. The Theatre was closed for performances from March 2020 owing to Covid-19 restrictions and has now reopened for business. Originally built as a picture theatre, the space has been adapted and is now equipped with state of the art digital and lighting equipment. HSC students from Nambucca Heads High are now accessing these after damage caused by recent floods to school equipment.

Bowraville Central School also uses the space for Drama classes during the week. Bowraville was originally a segregated theatre, with First Nations visitors having to buy their tickets separately and enter through a different door. This also required them to enter and leave the theatre at different times. What a difference time and a concerted effort to achieve racial equality makes. A confirmation of this progress can be seen with the first shows to be put on following COVID restrictions being eased. Headlining the reopening of the performance space was Arrernte Country music legend Warren H Williams, with Gumbaynggirr artists, and supported by pianist Juliane Croft, on April 1.

The show was a sell-out. Coming soon to the Bowraville Theatre is Koori Comedy Showcase, a comedy displaying the talents of First Nation comedians. The Showcase will be hosted by start-up entertainment company Human-Rabbit Entertainment, owned by Dharug born Wiradjuri woman Jessie ‘Rabbit’ Miller, and Papua New Guinean and Wiradjuri comedian Dave Human. Both Jessie and Dave are from Stolen Generation families. Jessie’s family was spread across NSW and raised as ‘white people’, a story that includes her English grandfather denying Jessie’s great-aunt access to Jessie’s Nan. They were never reunited. Dave’s family was also displaced after his mum

was raised in an orphanage, resulting in the loss of family knowledge. His aunty, a proud Indigenous woman (now deceased), has always, according to Dave, inspired, and continues to inspire him in what he does. Their choice of Bowraville Theatre to put on their first show comes from their attendance at the Uncle Warren H Williams concert in April. “The energy was amazing,” Jessie said. “The Bowraville Theatre acknowledged the pain caused by the past and an apology was read out to the Indigenous people. It was a beautiful moment to be part of.”

Estate debts and superannuation KEN makes a will leaving his estate to his spouse, Joan and he makes a binding death benefit nomination, relating to his superannuation fund, with the effect that his substantial superannuation passes to his children. After Ken’s death, Joan seeks legal advice regarding Ken’s estate. Joan is concerned that although she receives Ken’s automotive business under his will, she is aware that there are a number of creditors that had been pursuing him. The solicitor advises Joan that as executor, she has a duty to pay Ken’s debts, which in this case, primarily arose from his business, which he conducted as a sole trader. Joan is also advised that if she wishes to continue to run the business, she is able to pay the debts herself. Unfortunately, Joan does not have the funds to pay the creditors and the business is placed on the market. In relation to Ken’s superannuation, Joan is advised that the superannuation fund is a protected asset and that creditors have no claim on the superannuation. Joan is also advised, that because Ken’s children are non-dependent adults, they will pay a substantial amount of tax on his super, which could have been avoided if it had been left to Joan. In considering whether to make a family provision claim, Joan is advised that, unlike the law in other states, she can make a claim on Ken’s superannuation. Joan is also advised that 95% of these types of claims settle at mediation for around $200,000 and that the solicitor would be prepared to be retained on a “no win no fee” basis in the circumstances. Nambucca Valley Police News ● ON 19/5/21 Police arrested a 40yr old man at Macksville Police Station following investigations related to a family dispute in which a 61yr old woman and 34yr old man were assaulted and property was damaged at a Nambucca Heads address earlier the same day. The accused man was released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 27/5/21. ● On 18/5/21 Police arrested a 30yr old woman following investigations related to a fire which caused damage to the disabled toilet cubicle in Winifred St, Macksville. The accused woman was charged at Macksville Police Station and later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 17/6/21. ● On 15/5/21 Police were alerted to a break and enter occurring at an Argents Hill address. A 38yr old man was arrested at the scene and charged at Macksville Police Station. The accused man was released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 8/7/21. ● On 14/5/21 Police issued a 58yr old man a court attendance notice following a family dispute in which a 66yr old man was assaulted. The accused man appeared before Macksville Local Court on 20/5/21 and was sentenced to a 9-month Conditional Release Order.

● Police are investigating an accident that occurred on the Pacific Hwy, Allgomera on 17/5/21 at about 8:45pm where a north bound B-Double truck and a Toyota ute collided with straying cattle on the roadway. One of the beasts died at the scene with another euthanised by Police. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and luckily no persons were injured. A local tow truck operator assisted with the removal of the carcasses. ● On 15/5/21 Police arrested a 22yr old man at a Macksville address following a family dispute in which a 51yr old man was assaulted. The accused man appeared before Macksville Local Court on 20/5/21 and was fined $750. ● On the evening of 20/5/21 Police arrested a 64yr old man for breaching an AVO at a Bowraville address. The man was also wanted after absconding from the scene of a collision on South Arm Rd, Bowraville earlier the same day where he was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and checks also revealed that he was a disqualified driver. The accused man was refused bail and is due to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 21/5/21.

Grafton man who caught a train from Sydney and alighted at Nambucca Heads. Acting Inspector Anthony Smith, Nambucca Valley, Mid North Coast Police District, said, “We don’t have someone living in our community, in this case, going out and breaking into our home. “This fellow was a random.” Kirsty Snow, resident at the premises, received a notification on her phone that a transaction had occurred on her card as soon as it was used. Kirsty said she “immediately thought she’d left the card in the car”. Her husband and Kirsty then discovered the missing wallets. Kirsty explained that, “It felt like an invasion of privacy. “It is scary to think you have kids sleeping in the house. “It’s scary not knowing who that person is. “It’s the ‘what if?’” Both Acting Inspector Anthony Smith and Kirsty Snow would like people to be warned, from this incident, about the importance of locking their doors, even when they are at home.

Theft in Nambucca Heads a reminder to lock doors

BETWEEN 9:30pm 13 May and 6:50am 14 May there was a forced entry into a premises in Nambucca Heads. The intruder was not invited into the residence and entry was gained through a closed but unlocked side door. It is likely this occurred while the family was sleeping. One of the items stolen from the home was a credit card which was contained in a purse. This credit card was used at a local tobacco shop where two transactions occurred. These transactions were captured on CCTV. Later on 14 May this man was apprehended on Mann Street, Nambucca Heads by police. The man was picked up owing to an outstanding warrant. When put into custody the card was discovered on his person. He claimed to have found the card. The man was taken to Kempsey Court on multiple charges and refused bail. According to police reports he is a South

At the rugby on the weekend, a couple of the parents got into a slanging match and it almost erupted into something physical. What sort of message is this sending our kids? Mrs Marie P. Dear Marie,

I guess we all attend weekend sports for different reasons. For some of us, it’s an opportunity to get out into the sunshine and watch our kids build on their good old Ricky Resilience when they lose by 40 points. For others, it’s a chance to catch up on some emails, occasionally glancing up at little Freddie and wondering what sort of weirdo invented the scrum, which seems to involve forcing Freddie’s shoulder into the sweaty buttocks of Lurch, his oversized teammate, in an effort to gain possession of the ball. Or maybe it’s the plastic-wrapped pies and weak coffee that entices you, as you work on ruining your waistline at the same speed as your over-zealous daughter Veronica works on understanding the meaning of non-contact sport. Then, of course, there’s the parent who has put Sunny-Jim into footy to relive his childhood. He yells, he waves his fist in the air, his face goes beetrootred and the veins in his temples pop, as he watches Sunny-Jim ruin his chances at vicariously living out his destiny to be man of the match, a destiny stolen from him back in ’86 when he showed some promise on the field right before the indignity of being removed on a stretcher with a suspected broken collar-bone. This parent is on edge from the moment he parks his Prado. His senses are heightened for any dodgy coachcalls. He is like a cat on a hot-tin roof, ready to pounce, and he should just be left alone or even sedated with several bacon and egg rolls just in case a player puts a foot wrong against Sunny-Jim, a kid easily picked on the field because he is trying to disappear into the blades of grass rather than suffer the indignity of his old man ranting from the sidelines. There should probably be a referee both on and off the field. This off-field referee could hand out penalties based on parents’ behaviour. The scenario you painted, for example, would translate to 10 points off the offending side’s final score. Repercussions for the loser antics of parents would then lead to a win-win for the kids who just want to have a bit of fun. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Alie Arjaans’ works on display at Stringer Gallery

ALIE Marie Arjaans is the Stringer Gallery’s Artist of the Month for June. This will be an exhibition with a difference since the featured art works are all illustrations for a story Alie has written called ‘Faery Logik’. Alie works in a variety of media in the creation of

her illustrations including inks and watercolour. She has experimented with Japanese washi paper, which provides a very interesting texture, alongside more traditional supports. Alie’s works will be on show until the end of June in the Stringer Gallery on

So, what is Tony’s first foray into fiction, ‘Death of a Coast Watcher’ about? “In 1943 on Bougainville Island, New Guinea, a Japanese

officer beheads Hugh Rand, an Australian spy — a coast watcher. “The spectators include villagers he terrorised as his mind frayed under the stress of pursuit by soldiers and their hounds. “Rand’s influence transcends his death. “For decades he plagues characters who strive to cope with him and one another in New Guinea, the Gilbert Islands, Australia and Japan. Who misperceives? Lies? Self-destructs? Suffers? Loves? “The layers unfold as the author entices us through cultural, historical and

intellectual curtains, deep into minds and relationships disturbed by the Pacific war and Rand’s legacy.” Lisa Hall of ANZ Lit Lovers wrote of ‘Death of a Coast Watcher’, “One of the pleasures of a blog like mine is that sometimes there is an opportunity to introduce a really fine work of fiction to readers who might otherwise never get to hear about it.” Congratulations to Tony for the release of his latest novel. MACKSVILLE Hospital volunteers are back. Their first job? To open the new café. Dee Hunter, the United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW Regional Representative and a member of the BowraMacksville UHA, says it’s her role running the café that keeps her busiest. “With the new hospital located about two kilometers out of town, our café is the most convenient for anyone working in or visiting the hospital,” she told News Of The Area. Covid-19 restrictions meant the volunteers were withdrawn but gradually they have returned starting with a core of ten opening the new café. “We were exhausted,” laughed Dee, who is thankful more volunteers are back on

Muurrbay Aborigional Language and Culture Co-operative reviving Language

MUURRBAY Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative, is a leading notfor-profit Regional Language Centre. Muurrbay’s mission is the revitalisation of the languages of seven Aboriginal communities of central and northern NSW. Muurrbay was established in 1986 by Gumbaynggirr Elders, with the help of linguist Brother Steve Morlli,

Julie Long, Regional Co-ordinator at Muurrbay, explains that Gumbayngirr Elder Uncle Gary Williams, long serving CEO of Muurrbay, has been vital to the Gumbaynggirr language revival in the Valley. According to Julie there are very few First Nations language centres in Australia, with Muurrbay being one of the few located in the country. Gary shared that Muurrbay is the only Regional

SATURDAY 22 May saw the Nambucca Valley Lions travel north to take on the Casino Lions in a clash of the big cats, which marked the beginning of a great rivalry between two clubs who share the same team name and with the inaugural Lions Cup up for grabs, Nambucca secured their first win for the season 12.4 (76) - 8.5 (53). Both teams, sitting at the bottom of the ladder, were looking for

their first win and with Nambucca traveling to Casino undermanned once again, the Casino Lions were eager to capitalise with a full squad at home but underestimated the strength and determination of the lads from the Nambucca Valley. Even though Casino lost, they need to be commended for the way they played, heads held high for all four quarters and really bringing the heat to Nambucca in the second half of the game.

JIM McCullagh from Hyland Park recently competed at the SLSA ‘Aussie’ Masters Championships, as well as the Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) State Masters Championships and Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW) State Masters Championships held over March and April 2021. Jim competed for Urunga SLSC in the 65+ Beach Flags. He won gold at the Aussie Championships and Queensland Championships, and a silver at the NSW Championships. WE were blessed with a week of fine weather, allowing our staff to get on with the formidable job of course flood repairs. Thanks to Fortade Group Pty Ltd who were able to make an early start on replacing our Golf Cart Paths which were washed away during the flooding. Our thanks also to Handybin Waste Services Coffs Harbour who have partnered with us in our course recovery program and are supplying us with a substantial amount of Recycled Glass Product to be used as a base for some of the bunkers that are undergoing a “makeover”. We expect our normal bunker sand will be delivered

next week. Fingers crossed for continuing fine weather, and it's full steam ahead for our Course Flood Recovery program. Many will probably watch tonight’s two-round cookoff fascinated by the ingredients. But would you use them in their own kitchen? Are you “game”? Full-blown foodies are in for a treat, but can we expect an even more challenging episode dedicated to something such as offal soon? Probably not. Chicken intestines just aren’t that charming, but there’s a sense of adventure in cooking game meat. Tonight, the contestants have five minutes to identify 14 displayed game meats. The lowest scorers will have to concoct something delicious and impress judges Mel, Jock (above centre) and Andy (above right) in order to stay. It’s not exactly lick-yourlips television, but is kind of educational.

From the deft hands of writer and producer Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) comes this scenically beautiful and emotional dark whodunnit. If you watched the premiere episode last week, you could be forgiven for thinking that Bloodlands has a bythe-numbers police procedural feel to it, albeit a top-quality one at that. But as episode two unfolds tonight it soon becomes clear that not only is its lead, James Nesbitt, (right), a scenestealer of the highest order, but that this kidnapping story is more complicated and nimble than ﬁrst appearances suggest. Tonight, detective Tom’s (Nesbitt) search appears to have been led down a false trail. It’s gripping, rewarding viewing.

Winners are grinners as the Nambucca Strikers over 30s Women’s side win 8-0.

THE Nambucca Strikers defeated the Coffs Coast Tigers 8-0 to chalk up their first victory in their inaugural season in the women’s over 30s league. Julie Ann Panitz bagged five goals, Deslie Townley scored twice and Jemma Brokenwood netted once at the Coffs Harbour Sport and Leisure Park last Thursday evening.
