Heads has presented Frank Partridge VC Public School with a defibrillator. The Lions Club views the donation as an opportunity to invest in the safety of the students, staff and community at the school. Cardiac arrest occurs across the age range of the population. According to NSW Health more than 8500 people in NSW experience a cardiac arrest outside of hospital each year, and every minute that passes after a person has a cardiac arrest impacts on their chance of survival. Calling 000, giving CPR and providing defibrillation shock are the best ways to assist when someone has experienced a cardiac arrest. The Lions Club told News Of The Area that the defibrillator purchased is one that is highly recommended, with the automated

ON Friday, 19 November it became apparent that great live music was firmly back in action when 2NVR Nambucca Valley Radio’s Studio 3 hosted the tremendously talented musical trio, ‘Thoughts and Prayers’, for an intimate live performance. The gig was broadcast live to air and could be streamed by listeners all over the world. Those who were enjoying the live performance in the Tewinga studios of 2NVR and those listening at home were treated to two hours of beautiful music. 2NVR’s host for the evening Mrs Ceri Wrobel said, “The trio played songs that were known by the audience but all had that

special Thoughts and Prayers touch.” For singer/guitarist Debbie Spillane, well known for her accomplished broadcasting career in sport, this was a first as she had not been live on air as a musician before. Debbie told News Of The Area, “It is just so nice to be out playing music for an audience again after being unable to perform for so long due to COVID restrictions.” As well as Debbie, the Valla based ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ is made up of Brett Barber, who’s vocals and guitar work memorised the appreciative audience, and Pete Hardin, the accomplished former guitarist from iconic Aussie band the La De Da’s. Local Government NSW, the peak advisory body for Local Government is “concerned” about the level of female representation and gender equality in Local Government. “It’s about 30 percent,” Cr Jenvey said. The NSW Electoral Commission has confirmed that women will represent 41.7 percent of the 3,864 candidates standing at the upcoming elections, an increase of 4.2 percent compared to the 2016-17 elections and 6.2 percent from the 2012 poll. In the upcoming Council elections in Nambucca Valley the percentage of female candidates is even lower, at 15 percent. Two out of the thirteen Council candidates are female. In terms of representation, where women make up approximately 51 percent of the Australian population, this figure is not a reflection of the population. News Of The Area spoke to Cr Susan Jenvey and Mayor Rhonda Hoban to discuss the uneven representation in the upcoming elections. Cr Jenvey said that she valued more female representation on Council. “We need the diversity and different views of women on Council to be representative.” Mayor Hoban said, “I like to see not only a gender mix but a mix of age, background, skills, expertise and experience. “In recent years we have had a good female representation on Council. “In fact for the period 2012-2016 we had a majority female Council. “I think that the lack of female candidates in this election is an exception.” Both Mayor Hoban and Cr Jenvey reflected on their own experiences as women in politics Mayor Hoban shared, “One of the things that I hope I have achieved in my seventeen years on Council and thirteen years as Mayor is to convince other women that they are perfectly capable of representing their community, and taking on a leadership role.” Cr Jenvey said, “At the last State Elections, I stood for the Labor Party where we have a policy based on something called Emily’s list.” “This ensures equal quotas of men and women for pre-selection.” “At that election 51 percent of candidates were women. “It wasn’t only the advocacy of women that enabled this to occur, it was also the actions of good men.” While the representation of women on Council will be below state averages for the

upcoming term, Mayor Hoban said, “(I’d) like to think that everyone in our community feels that they have a voice. “All residents can contact a councillor and raise any issue or concern, or they can contact the Council’s General Manager. “We also have a Public Forum component to our regular Council meetings.” Cr Jenvey advised that support is available for women who may want to stand for Council but would like some training and advice. The Australian Local Government Women’s Association NSW branch offers short courses on empowerment and local

government. Cr Jenvey, looking towards the future in terms of female representation on Council, said, “When the new Council is underway, we should ask LGNSW and ALGWA to come to Nambucca and run some community seminars to make sure that we don’t go backwards on the gains we have made.” The NSW Government has been rolling out promotional campaigns targeting women, funded workshops for female candidates, allowed virtual meeting attendance for councillors with carer responsibilities, and introduced superannuation and mandatory payment of childcare

costs for elected representatives to increase the number of women standing for local government elections. “It is wonderful to see a significant increase in the number of women standing for election which will greatly improve our chances of boosting the number of female councillors serving in councils across the State,” NSW Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said. “The Government has worked hard to encourage people from all walks of life to stand for their community and run for election to their council at next month’s local government poll. “However, we are not resting

good work during the next council term.” The NSW Government has announced more than $2 million in funding to support local democracy and increase diversity of councillors serving on regional councils ahead of the September 2024 local government poll. The Supporting Regional Democracy Program will boost the capacity of councils in the bush to actively promote diversity over the next three-year term. “Regional councils are the heart of their communities and councillors play a leading role in the economic and social wellbeing of towns and cities across NSW,” Minister Hancock said.

NAMBUCCA Valley Council has released a survey regarding the proposed Scotts Head Skate and Recreation Park and is now seeking feedback from the community on the proposal. The survey has been designed to ensure feedback informs Council on the needs of the community, in particular the youth, and provides a safe healthy environment that can be enjoyed by all. Submitted survey data will assist Council staff to determine the preferred site for the proposed Skate and Recreation Park and the size of a skate park that can be reasonably accommodated on that site. Those electing to be included in the project mailing list by adding their email address to the survey will receive further updates and will be invited to participate in the concept design phase following site location selection. To complete the survey log on to www. nambucca.nsw.gov.au and follow the prompts. Access is also available by visiting the Macksville or Nambucca Heads Library to complete the survey online or by hand using the paper version of the survey available from the counter. The survey closes on 14 January 2022.

GIVING the community a voice is a key issue for Nambucca Labor Councillor Susan Jenvey who is running for Mayor and Councillor in the upcoming Local Government Elections on 4 December.

This can be supported, Cr Jenvey said, by reinstating a Neighbourhood Centre in Nambucca and increasing the focus on community development. “I understand Neighbourhood Centres are a soft entry point for people to gain access to community information and services. “They are places where

people, who have been hurt by a system that can be harsh, find a way to navigate better outcomes for themselves through connection to others who have also experienced similar hardships. “There is support and healing in this connection. “The value of Neighbourhood Centres is that they are underpinned by concepts of social justice and equality. “These include aspects of social life related to gender,

race, the environment; and situations where relationships are unequal between individuals, groups, and organisations.” Cr Jenvey said that Neighbourhood Centres can be a place of acceptance within the community. “As we don’t all have what we need to live well, maybe they are places where people can reckon with what it means to distribute power more equally, even if that is simply access to free bread, the use of a laptop, seeing that someone is okay, or a domestic violence referral. “Reinstating a Neighbourhood Centre is important in the Nambucca region.” Despite rising house prices and changing demographics, Cr Jenvey said there are still significant and persistent levels of disadvantage in the Nambucca community. “Having a grass roots organisation like a Neighbourhood Centre means you can try to devise solutions to your own problems. “This is true community development.” Cr Jenvey said there were examples across bordering LGA’s of Neighbourhood Centres being used effectively to support the community. “If we look at our neighbouring regional councils, we see that Bellingen Council has established Neighbourhood Centres on Council owned land in both Bellingen and Urunga. “In Coffs Harbour – the whole community village is on Council owned land. “So, connection to Council is a starting point for reinstating a Neighbourhood Centre.” Cr Jenvey also advocates for reinstating a Community Development Officer position for the area. “On other community-based policy, against my strong opposition, the last Council removed resources from the position. “Council should reinstate this position,

purpose and sustainability in terms of appropriate staffing and funding. “The question is whether the already stretched funding provided for these services would be better spent on rental of premises and staffing or directed toward a Virtual Hub where people needing assistance can see all of the available services on a one stop site. “I would be guided by the community on that one.”

Remembering the HMAS Sydney 80 years on By Mick BIRTLES 80 YEARS ago, on 19 November 1941, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) suffered its biggest ever loss of life when the HMAS Sydney was sunk by the German ship, Kormoran, 112 nautical miles off the Western Australian coast. With 645 lives lost it was the biggest allied loss from a single ship during WWII. The Kormoran was also sunk; however the majority of her crew were rescued and became prisoners of war. Just what happened on that day has long been the subject of intense speculation as no RAN personnel survived to tell their side of the story. The mystery was further compounded by both ship’s final resting place remaining a mystery for nearly 70 years. It was not until 2008 when the wrecks were found however this has done little to tell the full story. From all those of the HMAS Sydney who perished that day only one body was ever recovered. It washed ashore in a life raft on Christmas Island three months after the sinking, however could not be

identified and was buried as an unknown sailor near where he was found. These remains were exhumed in 2006 and relocated to the Geraldton War Cemetery. A bone fragment was taken for examination at the time and last week the RAN announced DNA testing has been used to positively identify the remains of Able Seaman Thomas Welsby Clark who was 21 when the HMAS Sydney sank. This week the Naval and Mariners Association of Australia, Nambucca Valley, gathered in Nambucca Heads to hold a service to commemorate the loss of lives on the HMAS Sydney 80 years ago. Secretary of the association, Mr John Kent, told News Of The Area, “Former members of the RAN and

Merchant Mariners consider the act of remembering those who perished on the Sydney to be of the utmost importance and Australians should never forget them.” During the dignified service the Naval Prayer was recited by the Vice President of the Association, Mr Tas Fribbins. In keeping with tradition a floral tribute was cast into the water while members of the Naval and Mariners Association watched and reflected on this wartime tragedy. Mr Kent added, “We conduct a service in memory of the crew of HMAS Sydney each year however this year being the 80th Anniversary and with the unknown sailor being identified the service feels somehow more significant.” Lest We Forget.

THE Cancer council has many annual fundraisers to help raise much needed funds for Cancer research, prevention and support services. On Monday, December 13 the annual, Longest Day Golf Challenge is set to take place. What is the annual Longest Day Golf Challenge? “The Longest Day is an endurance golf marathon designed to test your skill, strength and stamina,” the Cancer Council explains. The challenge is separated into three areas and it is up to the participants to select which area would suit them best.

OZGREEN is seeking community volunteers to run its award-winning Resilient Communities program across twelve localities on the North and Mid North Coast. Bellingen-based not-forprofit environmental and sustainability organisation OzGREEN is seeking applications from local people living in twelve communities across the Mid North Coast for the role of Volunteer Community Facilitators for the program. “The aim of the Resilient Communities program is to support communities to innovate actions that strengthen community and personal resilience to prepare for future disasters,” Anton Juodvalkis, OzGREEN’s CEO told News Of The Area. Turn your scraps to soil COFFS Harbour City, Bellingen Shire and Nambucca Valley Councils have teamed up to deliver a regional campaign to help educate residents about sustainable ways to dispose of food scraps and garden waste. The initiative includes running free ‘Let’s Get Composting: Scraps to Soil Workshops’ across the region. A free composting workshop will be held on Saturday 27 November 2021

at the Growing Together Community Garden, 50 Ridge Street, Nambucca Heads (opposite the Nambucca Heads Primary School) from 10am to 12 noon. Participants will find out how to get started composting and worm farming at home to create rich compost to make their garden grow. They will learn the value of composting and how it works, setting up their system,

managing and maintaining their new compost bin or worm farm, how to use compost products, troubleshooting and more. ANOTHER busy week on the Island, with lots of welcome visitors playing in our competitions – some keen golfers even flying in by helicopter for a quick 18 holes on Thursday afternoon. Good scores continued, probably assisted by some extra runs on the fairways, and our sensational greens. The course continues to recover well from the flooding, and our Greenkeeper Greg has been busy with the herbicide to further improve the fairways and tees by removal of rogue grasses. Many players will no doubt be thankful for the removal of the large Casuarina tree on the right side of the 16th fairway which had become unsafe. We thank this week’s featured sponsor – who supply commercial and domestic air fresheners and insect repellent solutions – see popular member Andrew Donovan for a full range of his products. JOHN and Sandra are married. They each have two children from a previous relationship. They attend an appointment with a solicitor regarding their estate planning with a view to making arrangements that provide for each other whilst ensuring that ultimately, all of their children receive equal shares of their estates. The solicitor advises them that they can make “mutual wills” and enter into an agreement, not to change their wills. They proceed with executing wills that leave the whole of their estates to each other when the first of them passes and when the last of them passes away, their estate is distributed between all four children. They sign a separate document, stating that they agree not to change their wills which includes a provision that states that apart from meeting their ordinary living expenses, they will not intentionally diminish their estates. When John passes away, he has $300,000 in his bank account. John’s son, Peter is concerned that if Sandra receives the money, he will not receive a share. He is concerned that Sandra may make a new will, waste the money or give it away to her children. He is of the view that if Sandra does not honour the terms of her agreement with John, there will be insufficient funds in her name to warrant taking her to court. Peter commences action in the Supreme Court, challenging the provisions of John’s will, seeking an immediate lump sum. The Court states that there is no evidence of a real risk that Sandra would change her will and given the relatively small size of the estate, dismisses Peter’s claim. However, Peter’s concerns were valid and the present approach to estate planning in blended family situations is to avoid mutual wills in favour of establishing flexible life interests. LAST Thursday evening, I attended Macksville Showground to hear the prospective platforms of the Nambucca Valley local election candidates. There was a good turn out of 'grey heads', and a significant absence of 18-30 year olds. Each candidate had three minutes to deliver their message, and each candidate was then asked the same three structured questions to reply to. There was no opportunity for any formal directed questions from the audience for fuller disclosure, transparency and increased public awareness. Susan Jenvey presented a vigorous list of progressive initiatives, with a background as a macadamia farmer, and an established history as a current councillor. As an incoming Mayor she is offering strong leadership to face head on, the new challenges this area faces to deliver real outcomes, equipped with fresh energy, ideas and scoping for additional resources. She talked about the inclusion of community initiatives, collaboration and real commitment to lead us forward to 2030. Peter Sobey talked about growth employment opportunities accruing from renewable energies, that simultaneously address climate change, as we career towards critical emission reductions by 2030. David Jones talked about the reintroduction of multiple occupancies as a strategy to create affordable housing options for families, to keep their families on their existing properties. He talked about his work in the community, meeting locals regularly, and hearing and giving

voice to their concerns representatively. Councillor Martin Balangarry raised his long standing work in mental health and the current issue of mental health issues facing young Indigenous people, and ongoing goals of Reconciliation work. Many candidates raised the issue of retaining the beauty, splendour and natural environment of the Nambucca Valley via safeguards against inappropriate and threatening future development that could destroy the outstanding amenity that we presently enjoy, which attracted many sea changers to this area originally, and during Covid from 2019-2021. The current Mayor, Rhonda Hoban, relied on her resume of the past 14 years of achievements, but warned that the purse strings were tight for the coming term and that the money would be thinly spread. Without adequate funds expensive road upgrades cannot be guaranteed. I concluded that we need a new breed of progressive, smart thinking, innovative and hard working councillors with fresh energy and vision who can demonstrably lead us through our immediate pressing issues proactively as we career towards the 2030 climate change deadline, as part of the bigger goal for us as a nation. Having the opportunity to vote, enables every person on the electoral roll to have personal power in deciding their future and quality of life, and is therefore a responsibility and opportunity to make change happen.

IN 2014 the Red Cross celebrated 100 years in Australia. An Australian Branch of the British Red Cross was formed on the outbreak of WWI. In response to the call, Branches were formed at Bowraville, Taylors Arm, Macksville and Nambucca Heads, with members providing support for soldiers overseas. With the exception of a short break and amalgamation with Macksville Branch, Nambucca Valley Branch as it is now named, is still operating today. It is a very active Branch, and has been the recipient of the Margaret Wardell Country Cup, awarded by Red Cross to the best country branch for fundraising and community service, three times. The Branch runs two enterprises staffed by members and volunteers. Firstly, Marion’s Red Cross Tea House, which was the recipient of the Red Cross

Distinguished Team Award. We are extremely proud of the great food, friendly and relaxed atmosphere at the Tea House. Also, the Little Red Shoppe, which is stocked almost entirely with craft and other goods made by locals. Profits from both businesses go to help those in need. Telecross is a critical service where a daily reassuring telephone call is made to vulnerable community members. Volunteers make calls each morning, 365 days per year. If a call is unanswered, emergency procedures are activated to check on the client’s wellbeing. Trauma Teddies are knitted by Branch members and volunteers for distribution to local emergency services and for children in times of disaster. Lifeblood, formerly the Blood Service, is a vital essential service which relies on blood donors across Australia to deliver the blood

Well, for a start, I wouldn't sign off an email to a person you don't know as 'yours'. I mean, you're not mine, are you? There's a fair degree of intimacy suggested in that sign off, or else a bit of laziness due to hacking off the 'sincerely' or 'faithfully'. It's a good question though, and one that I already spend far too much time thinking about, so thank you for extending my convoluted ruminations. Do we have to reply with a kiss 'x', if that is how the sender has signed off? Are sign offs such as 'cheers' far more suited to time spent around a beer keg than the end of an email letting you know your sales report is overdue? Recently I read a delightful letter penned from an upset young girl to her family, which she had taped to her closed bedroom door. It was signed off, with wisdom and acuity beyond her years, 'Unhappy regards'. I suggested to her mother that I was tempted to sign off on all correspondence in this way, and then added a few more suggestions: Sincerely disappointed; Cheerless; Unkind regards; Yours unfaithfully. Her mother added a few more: Sincerely someone else's; Without love; Disapprovingly. Now surely these are far more appropriate for correspondence relating to unpaid bills, updates to terms of service, relationship breakdowns, and bonus Flybuys points notifications, among other examples. Or you could just go with some obnoxious Latin phrase that gives people false hope and visions of grandeur. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

There are times for hard-hitting drama, and there are times for a cup of tea with two spoonfuls of sugar: welcome to The Larkins. More than 30 years after The Darling Buds of May series, this adaptation doesn’t try to rewrite the story one iota. It’s a smart move – the world could do with sweetness and this dramedy oﬀers it in spades. There’s a danger that fans of the original won’t appreciate the nostalgia, but new viewers are likely to fall in love with the large working-class Larkin family from 1950s rural Kent. The meandering story, starring Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan (pictured), features some wonderfully over-the-top sets.

No longer the new kid on the block, this Aussie rendition of the British format is arguably the most popular version in the world. This Hamish Blake-led (pictured), family-friendly romp has now clocked up three seasons, making it the longestrunning LEGO Masters anywhere. Now, a festive Christmas special with a bevy of well-known guests is proving again that good things come in small packages. In tonight’s jubilant ﬁnale, Sophie Monk, Scott Cam, Brooke Boney and their teammates have one last hurrah before ﬁnding out who will be crowned the LEGO Masters Bricksmas winners. It’s a colourful spectacle which would have been perfect Christmas Eve fare.

to have John Durban do the coaching. John is a Professional Coach who is now retired. Whether you are a beginner or a lapsed tennis player from way back you will certainly learn from John. He makes it fun while

giving you the techniques and basics in stroke play. The home for tennis in Nambucca Heads is Gordon Park. You also won't get a better location just 100 metres from the picturesque Nambucca River with cooling breezes

Brad stated, “Because my whole family carries the harmful BRCA gene variant arising from my mother Beryl’s side of the family with her mother Thelma and her sister Vonda both developing breast cancer, Vonda’s daughter passing away at age 30, I feel compelled to do what I can to help find a cure for this insidious disease. “My mother at the young age of 44 developed ovarian cancer undergoing an operation followed up by Chemotherapy and at the time given only one year to live. “Two years later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “Her determination has seen her live a full and productive life. “Trent, my younger brother was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer at 32 in 2013, he too was given a short time to live but is surpassing the odds. “In her 30s younger sister Stacey developed breast cancer and is in remission with Tanya deciding to have pre-emptive surgery to remove the risk. “All four Fortescue siblings have the harmful BRCA gene variant.” Brad is no stranger to the golf course, having played golf for over thirty years. “I love the challenge of the game and knowing I can play anytime on any day without having to organise anyone else.” When asked what kind of fitness routine is required to participate in an event like

this Brad replied, “No fitness routine is required, I have a really good massage therapist that gives me a massage before the day, and then one after it if needed.” The event is nationally held on Monday, December 13, however Brad and his crew will be doing their challenge on the Friday before. “I need a weekend to get over the soreness,” Brad told News Of The Area. Many Mid North Coast golf courses have come on board, waiving their green fees for those golfers entering The Longest Day challenge. The Longest Day can be held at your local golf club with friends and fellow members anytime during December, although the official day is Monday, December 13. It is not necessary to play the full 72 holes. Participating in The Longest Day requires a minimum of two players who need to access four tee times across the day to complete the challenge. Cancer Council NSW is a community-focused charity that relies on the community for over 94% of its funding for crucial work including researching new treatments, developing better prevention strategies and providing psychological, emotional and social support to people affected by cancer.
