and spending much of his younger life in Brisbane, Shane joined the Army in 1988 where he served initially with the Royal Australian Artillery Corps (RAA). After four years in Townsville with the 4th Field Regiment RAA, Shane took the significant step of transferring to the Royal Australian Ordnance Corps where he trained and qualified as a parachute rigger. This required Shane to attend the Army’s Parachute Training School at Nowra and learn how to parachute from military aircraft.

Shane then saw the majority of his Army career out as a Parachute Rigger at Moorebank in Sydney. Shane completed nearly eight years full time service. Shane said, “One of the highlights of my time in uniform was training with the US Army in Hawaii where our American counterparts were impressed with the skills demonstrated by the Aussies.” Shane now works with the National Park and Wildlife Service based out of Bowraville and lives close to Taylors Arm at Yarranbella. Encouraged to move back to the Nambucca Valley by

Shane is a proud member of the Taylors Arm RSL sub-Branch. President of the sub-Branch, Mr Stuart Johnson, advised Shane that he had earned the Australian Defence Medal and would like to have it presented to him in the presence of fellow sub-Branch members at the iconic Pub with no Beer. Stuart Johnson told News Of The Area, “This is a significant achievement in the career of members and former members of the ADF so I asked the President of the Bowraville RSL sub-Branch, Mr Jim Cameron OAM, to present Shane’s medal. “We are proud of Shane’s service to the country and proud to have him as a member of the Taylors Arm sub-Branch.”

NSW Farmers is urging people heading into country areas for Christmas to keep an eye out for harvest machinery. Flooding and heavy rain delayed harvest efforts across much of the state, leading to more activity on and around farms and roads at the end of the year; NSW Farmers Grains Committee Chair Justin Everitt said people needed to take

Mid North Coast boaters urged to play it safe during busiest week of the year FROM Page 1 DURING the busiest boating week of the year, Mid North Coast Marine Rescue NSW volunteers are asking boaters and paddlers to play it safe and ensure they are well prepared before heading out on the water. Regional Operations Manager Randall Gawne said over the coming peak summer period the region’s Marine Rescue volunteers would be on watch, with extra boats on the water as required to cope with the projected demand. “With travel overseas and to some interstate destinations remaining challenging, we expect boaters to again flock to the spectacular Mid North Coast in record numbers in coming weeks,” he said. “We are also expecting many inexperienced boaters and paddlers trying out their first boat, jet ski or kayak.

AS COVID-19 cases reach record numbers across NSW, the State Government has brought forward eligibility to receive the third Covid booster vaccination from six months to five months. This means anyone 18 years and older who received their second Covid-19 vaccination in July 2021 or earlier is now eligible to receive the Covid booster dose. NSW Health has already delivered more than 120,000 vaccine booster doses to increase levels of immunity to the COVID-19 virus. People are eligible for a booster five months after a second dose and NSW Health can accommodate people about to travel who might need a slightly earlier appointment. The number of people eligible to receive a booster will increase steadily in 2022, with around 40 per cent of the NSW population to be eligible at the end of January, 64 per cent in February, 87 per cent in March, and 91 per cent by April 2022. The booster dose is not mandatory, however it is recommended to maintain immunity against COVID-19. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet urged every eligible person to book for their booster dose as soon as possible. “As we navigate our way out of the pandemic, we remain focused on saving lives and protecting livelihoods and getting your booster shot will offer you protection against COVID,” Mr Perrottet said. “Our frontline health workers have been incredible over the past two years and their

slightest of symptoms get tested and stay at home.” Those eligible for a booster dose can book in at a NSW Health vaccination clinic through the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Finder at https:// www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-andtools/covid-19-vaccine-clinic-finder. You can also book in to receive a booster dose at a participating pharmacy and your local GP. NAMBUCCA Valley Council wishes to advise of a sewage overflow that has discharged into Beer Creek and entered the Nambucca River. The overflow was caused by a blockage in the sewer main. Water samples taken from the Nambucca River indicate a high faecal coliform concentration in the water and

as a precautionary measure Council is recommending that swimming in the river upstream of the VWall is to be avoided for the time being. A sign has been installed at Bellwood Park warning not to swim in that area. Council will continue to monitor the situation and the sign will be removed once water conditions improve.

$10,000 raised for McGrath Breast Cancer Group By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN NAMBUCCA RSL presented the McGrath Breast Cancer Group with the final cheque from the fundraising activities that the Club has carried out to support those with breast cancer in 2021. The final presentation was for $10,000, from money raised during the RSL’s Pink Month. The McGrath Breast Cancer Group has placed 20 more trained breast cancer nurses in communities across Australia in the 2020-21 period. The McGrath Foundation advises that there are now 171 breast cancer nurses across Australia. Nambucca RSL has also presented Macksville Hospital with a Sozo machine worth $12400 in 2021. A Sozo machine provides noninvasive fluid and tissue analysis to cancer patients. A High Tea was held as part of the club's fundraising effort, where there were pink cocktails,

5. Police are investigating a rock throwing incident along Giinagay Way, Nambucca Heads that occurred on 13/12/21 about 2:43pm. A vehicle was travelling south bound when just north of the 60km zone approaching Riverside Dr, the front passenger side window was struck causing it to smash. RHONDA Hoban was officially declared elected as Nambucca Valley Mayor on Tuesday, 21 December 2021 by the NSW Electoral Commission. With 17 years on Council under her belt so far, Hoban’s Mayoral re-election is another huge vote of confidence from the Nambucca Valley community. Pavey dropped from NSW Cabinet MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey was dropped as a NSW Minister on Saturday, ahead of the announcement by Premier Dominic Perrottet and Deputy Premier Paul Toole of a newlook Cabinet on Monday. Ms Pavey, who has been Member for Oxley since 2015 and Minister for Water, Property and Housing since 2019, said she received a call from Paul Toole on Saturday afternoon breaking the news. Ms Pavey was the longestserving National Party MP in the country. Ms Pavey said she was “disappointed” but could “respect the decision made”.

“As the Member for Oxley, my most important work is representing the constituents of the four Valleys,” said Ms Pavey. “I proudly represent the region in the NSW Parliament and have shared electoral duties with that of a ministerial role.” Ms Pavey thanked the industry groups who supported her in the various ministerial portfolios of Roads, Transport, Water and Housing. “I took the Water

With the op shop to reopen on January 4, Vinnies will once again be accepting donations of anything that’s clean, in good condition and reusable. According to Raewyn, “If you wouldn’t wear or use it yourself, give it to your best

friend or their child, then the op shop is not the place for that item. “If you can’t find another home for it, it probably needs to go in your red or yellow rubbish bin.” Like many other op shops and many organisations in the Nambucca Valley, Vinnies is short of volunteer staff. “There are a myriad of jobs that are done by volunteers,” said Raewyn. “The day supervisors and the overall shop manager are all volunteers and they and the day staff take on whatever jobs need doing. “Some of the staff like to iron clothes, some have a great fashion eye and dress the mannequins, some cull clothes that have been hanging on the

racks for a while and others sort, price and restock. “That’s only the start but there is a job for everyone, men and women alike.” With volunteer numbers low, Raewyn is hoping to inspire some locals to join the team in 2022. “Please, if you are double vaccinated and if you would like something to fill in a few hours, want to contribute to society in a meaningful way, increase your social circle or even need to meet Centrelink commitments, come into the shop and express your interest or phone 6568 1579 first if you prefer. “You’ll be greeted warmly and given lots of encouragement,” Raewyn said.

JUST as we were getting ready to remove ‘Preferred Lied’ from conditions of play, we were deluged with 56mm of rain Thursday night and Friday morning, flooding most of the bunkers and waterlogging the course once again. Tuesday 14 December was the Mid North Coast VETS Medley Stableford attended by 78 players. Winner in Division 1 (0 to 22) was Dennis Ashton (19) with 40 points, followed by Cliff Webeck (20) from Coffs Harbour 39 points, Drew Glasson (9) and Wayne Cormick (2) from Coffs Harbour both had 38 points. In Division 2 (23 to 45), Michael Broadfoot (24) from Urunga won with 38 points, from Steve Ward (27) on 37

So, I set about making Nan’s famous pudding. I ended up making two smaller puddings so that I only had to boil them for three hours. My sister, who doesn’t drink alcohol, gave me a spare bottle of Black Bottle brandy that belonged to my Grandad. He would drink anything, but particularly loved brandy and dry ginger ale. As I put the puddings into the boiler, I realised I’d forgotten to add the almonds! Oh well, they can go into the brandy butter. Nan’s Christmas recipe comes from the Commonsense Cookery Book. She would add 10-12 eggs, but I found this can make the pudding quite stodgy, which is not ideal after a big heavy meal in an Australian summer, so I stuck to eight. For those who don’t like brandy, rum or fruit juice can be used instead. Other dried fruits can be added to the mix, such as chopped dates or glace ginger.

Christmas Pudding Ingredients 1kg mixed fruit 125g blanched almonds 500g butter 500g brown sugar 8 eggs ⅔ cup brandy 250g soft fresh breadcrumbs (you can grate a few slices of bread) 250g plain flour Pinch of salt 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp nutmeg 2 tsp mixed spice Method Fill up a large pot with water and put it on the stove to boil. Cream the butter and sugar together, then add well beaten eggs and brandy. Stir in all the fruit. Add the breadcrumbs, sifted flour, salt, bicarb, nutmeg and mixed spice, and mix it thoroughly. Tie up in a square of unbleached calico cloth, placing the tie about 10cm or so away from the pudding so

that it can swell up. The mixture can also be placed into a two litre pudding basin, allowing space for the pudding to swell. Boil for six hours. On the day of eating, boil for 3 hours (you can do this first thing in the morning Christmas day or after lunch Christmas Eve) Two smaller puddings can be boiled for three hours on the first cook, then 90 minutes on the day of eating. The secret to a successful pudding flame is to warm the brandy gently on the stove before using a kitchen lighter or long matches to light the vapour. Have your phone ready for a video, as this spectacular effect only lasts a couple of seconds! Hopefully I made Nan proud, and by sharing this recipe with you all, it has evoked my own memories of the fun family Christmases I had with my grandparents.

LOVE it or hate it, the classic Christmas pudding is an iconic part of the festive season. Fruit, nuts, brandy, flour, butter, spices and sugar come together to make a hulking monolith which dominates the Christmas dessert table. My Nan would make a Christmas pudding every year and it was served on Christmas Eve after our customary walk to look at the local Christmas lights. The process would start a good month or so ahead, with the fruit being soaked in a liberal helping of brandy. When mixing the ingredients together, Nan would invite us to make a wish. As we got older, we would give the pudding a stir and think of every person who was no longer with us. Once the ingredients were

mixed together, the mixture would be poured into a square of calico cloth and boiled in an old aluminium pot for six hours. The cooked pudding was then hung from a cupboard door knob in the corner of the kitchen for several weeks before Christmas. Come Christmas Eve, the pudding was boiled again for an hour, then Nan would perform the impressive feat of pouring burning brandy over the pudding. The flames would burn blue due to the ethanol in

the brandy, and Mum always worried that the house would catch fire. Us kids were always mesmerised by the blue flames, which flared up over the pudding and only lasted for a few seconds. Unfortunately, my Nan died in October 2020 and Christmas has not been quite the same without her. I wanted to try to recapture some of the magic we experienced as kids when we spent Christmas with her and my Grandad at their home in Wollongong.

I saw Susie Suing Santa Clause IT was Christmas Eve and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Nothing would stir for the rest of Christmas Eve, nor Christmas Day. A fact that little Susie could scarcely believe, she didn’t know what to say. Had she been bad enough that year to end up on Santa’s naughty list? The thought was so terrible, yet it did so persist. Although they did not confirm Susie’s fear, the Boxing Day news headlines made everything clear. “After one too many servings of warm milk and biscuits, Santa had fallen into a deep sleep in which he stayed. “Although he has just awoken, his usual deliveries of presents will be severely delayed.” Susie was outraged and said aloud, “Santa can’t be late, how could this be! “If I don’t get my presents, where does this leave me?” Susie gathered her little friends, all as outraged as her. They found a lawyer who would do in a pinch, it’s no surprise that he was a grinch. Susie summonsed Santa who filed an appearance and a date was set. There was no time for error and no room for regret. Susie’s lawyer argued, “Santa had a contract to deliver these boys’ and girls’ presents in a timely manner. “This undue delay has caused a contractual breach. “It is for severe emotional trauma, that damages we seek.” The Court found that Santa had not intended to create a legal relationship. No contract existed. The urge to have the lawyer struck off, was only just resisted. It’s no surprise that Susie suing Santa landed her in strife. The first problem we have here, apart from the multiple word plays I could riff off using your name and your conundrum, is that your husband bought you jeggings as a birthday gift. The number of things that could go wrong with this ill-conceived purchase are as immeasurable as the ways jeggings are appropriated for real pieces of clothing. Do you ever sit at home, or on the bus, and wonder about how something was invented? I mean, imagine the day someone glanced down from the fetlock of his horse, to its hoof and thought, 'I don't know what I can use to stick these two sheets of paper together, but I reckon the answer will be found by grinding down bits of this fine animal.' Jeggings, for those who don't know, are basically tights printed to look like jeans, but don't be fooled. They are not jeans. They don't have zips. They don't have any support. You can't tuck a shirt into them. Jeggings are an optical illusion that leave about as much to the imagination as body paint. And, as you've found, Fanny J, they don't hold in your stomach and thighs, they accentuate them. They are about as adorable as the idea of grown-ups wandering around in Wondersuits (an outfit that looks appropriate on babies, but positively creepy on anyone who has gone beyond their first birthday). I wouldn't be too worried about hurting your husband's feelings. He doesn't seem to have much regard for yours if he's going to allow you to saunter around town leaving nothing to the imagination, and, after a few washes when the elastic gives way, trotting along like a denim-sprayed Shar Pei. Many hybrids don't work for good reason. Keep your jeans as jeans, your leggings for exercise, and shun the cruel and twisted fashionista who thought mixing the two was a good idea. Carpe diem, Jasminda. When making the pies, prepare shortcrust pastry cases and fill them with mincemeat then place slices of candied citrus peel and a sprinkle of caraway seeds before covering with the lid. You can make either more modern small pies or, for a more traditional feel, make one large pie in a pie-tin. THE recent rain and warm weather has the Macksville Country Club Golf course looking like a picture. Saturday's event was a single Stableford sponsored by Makita Tools. Forty seven turned up for a great day with John Dowzard playing to a five under his handicap to blitz the field with the ever improving junior Jordan Welsh and Tannah Bradshaw both four under. Nearest the pins went to Max Graham and Darrin Pike in A grade, Jack Ireland in B grade and Greg Zirkler in C grade. The Tony Henshaw, Let's Get Plastered pairs final has finally been played with Dale Bunton and Murray Spear defeating

Max Graham and Steve Ellis. Sunday was the annual Eclectic knockout. This event starts with three groups of nine. One from each group is eliminated on each hole. If more than one finishes the hole equal ‘last’ they go to a ‘chip off’ where they chip From about ten metres off the green towards the pin - the player furthest from the pin is out. After nine holes the winner from each group plays on eliminating one on each hole until only one is left. The group winners were Mick O'Brien, Allan Clarke and Don Forrester with Don coming out the overall winner.
