Fatal crash Dennis Driver to run for

A REPORT is being prepared for the coroner after an 82-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash in Fishermans Reach at about 7.50am on Monday, July 19. Kempsey Police inspector Martin Burke said emergency services attended the scene on Fishermans Reach Road just after 8am and that the man died at the scene. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Kempsey Police on (02) 6561 6199 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Essential Energy carried out repairs to a power pole that was damaged in the

incident. “Just before 1pm (on July 19), approximately 800 homes and businesses in Fishermans Reach, Stuarts Point, Grassy Head and surrounding areas were without power for approximately one hour, allowing Essential Energy crews to complete urgent repairs following a vehicle causing minor damage to a power pole on Fishermans Reach Road,” Mid North Coast Operations Manager Mat Reedy said. “Urgent repairs were necessary to ensure a safe and reliable power supply was provided to the local community.”

Nambucca Valley Police News ON 11 July 2021 a 35 year old Bowraville man was issued a Court Attendance Notice at Macksville Police Station following investigations related to a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Conen St, Bowraville on 10/7/21 about 1am. The accused man is alleged to have fled the

scene after he crashed a blue Holden ute into a residence, causing damage to the building. The vehicle was extensively damaged and required to be towed from the scene. The accused man was charged with traffic offences with a court date yet to be fixed.

Council By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN MR DENNIS Driver is set to contest a seat in the Nambucca Valley Council local government elections on Saturday, September 4. Mr Driver is a veteran journalist, having retired from his position as an NBN TV reporter in May this year. “I was born in Macksville and grew up in Nambucca Heads and have lived at Tewinga since 2003,” Mr Driver said. Mr Driver says that the impact of COVID-19 has had an impact everywhere, and that “the Nambucca Valley Council will have to grapple with its consequences for decades”. The impacts that Covid-19 has had on tourism and hospitality is acknowledged by Mr Driver, and he is keen to be part of assisting industries across the Valley to recover when “life goes somewhere near normal”. Mr Driver says he is running for Council because of his love for the area, and

Job opportunities and environmental protection are both high on Mr Driver’s list of priorities. The pristine rivers and precious forests in the Valley are something that he holds dear and believes need protection. “Forests are precious and we need to be very careful about what we log and what we preserve.” Mr Driver is concerned about the expansion of the blueberry industry into the Valley, and has a long history of researching the environmental impacts of the blueberry industry, related farming practices and the effect on nearby waterways. “Blueberry farming is not an industry that the Valley is crying out for. “It is an industry we need to do in moderation and with regulation,” he said. There are currently no regulations in place in the Valley about how close blueberry farms can go to homes, schools and waterways. Mr Driver would like to be a part of the Council taking action on this issue. “This time last year I was gearing up to contest the scheduled local government elections which were postponed due to the pandemic. “I have my fingers crossed that it won’t happen again in September,” Mr Driver said.

Plans for old hospital

THE old Macksville hospital is likely to become home to a new medical operator or be converted into a bulky goods retailer or up-market hotel, pending council approval, according to the new owners. Danny Ramanous, Project Manager at Romanous Developments, which bought the property from the New South Wales state government for $1.65 million on June 7, said these were the three key areas his business generally worked within. In response to questions about whether the property, which is currently zoned for residential use, might be used for accommodation purposes, Ramanous said “residential is not our core business” however he noted that it was “early days” and there may be opportunities for community engagement about the property’s fate. He said settlement of the sale was still “a couple of months off” and that any development work was unlikely to start until mid next year, “depending on how expensive the work is and the planning process”. The site is likely to remain empty until then, Ramonous said, unless there was a medical operator who was able to use parts of the property in its

ASHES 2 Green is a family-friendly, one-day event bringing together people from across the Nambucca Valley who have been affected by the 2019 bushfires and the 2021 floods. The event will be held at Spirit of the Rainforest (SOTR), the family property of local hospitality entrepreneur, Caitlin Hockey.

Community members as young as 12 were out fighting fires and have since been assisting in recovery and rebuilding efforts, volunteering for organisations such as Blaze Aid. “We know that people in our community are still hurting, from witnessing the devastation themselves and bearing the impact on family functioning,” Caitlin said. “After recent rains, we are currently witnessing the transformative power of healing through nature, as we are starting to see bursts of green, energy and light emerging.” Caitlin says the time is right to bring people together to remember, reflect and heal. THE pandemic has changed the way we shop and it’s not only by donning masks when doing face to face shopping. Australia Post reports that lockdowns in NSW are creating an increase in online shopping across the state. New year on year data shows almost four million households have bought something online in the last fortnight - up six per cent when compared to last year. In the same two weeks, New South Wales accounted

for over a third (35.1 per cent) of all online purchases nationally and Queensland almost a fifth. Western Australia and the Northern Territory have also grown strongly, up 20.3 and 17.2 percent respectively. In the Nambucca Local Government Area (LGA) the top three postcodes showing year on year increase in online shopping growth for the 12 months to 30 June 2021 are Nambucca Heads (2448) at 33.4%, followed by Bowraville (2449) at 29.4% and Macksville (2447) at 28.9%

VIEW (Voice, Interests, Education of Women) is a national women’s organisation who are a part of the Smith Family. They raise funds to create educational opportunities for young Australians in need. News Of The Area chatted with Club President, Jan Ewington, and Angie, the Club’s Vice President, on how the Nambucca Macksville Evening View Club operates on a local level. Jan explained that the club takes part in the Learning for Life (LFL) program. This program supports disadvantaged children in getting the resources they need to provision their educational experience. “The program gives students a chance to break the poverty cycle, and the trickle up effect works to help the whole family,” said Jan. All funds raised are for this purpose, and children are primarily identified by the Principals of individual schools on an anonymous basis. Jan said, “Our club supports at least six children for a full educational year.”

“Children we support get a Joy Spreader package, this includes reading packages, mentoring, with a whole range of things in between.” Fundraising for the group can vary from raffles, cake stalls, High Teas, Salsa Nights, card making, cent auctions and clothes swaps. The Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club is a small community within themselves. “Our members are wonderful bakers, pickle and relish makers, we are always looking for interesting fundraising activities and opportunities. “We are really getting well known for our Macksville street stalls,” said Jan. Members can attend monthly VIEW meetings where great fun is had by all and friendships are formed, featuring guest speakers and plenty of laughter. Jan said, “We are not the most orthodox of VIEW Clubs. “We have shirts, aprons and banners to get our message out to the community of who we are.” Angie said the Club’s last monthly meeting was put on hold in keeping with current Covid restrictions. “We will reinstate our

V-Wall Tavern renovation closure By Brooke LEWIS

THE V-Wall Tavern is set to close on Monday, July 26, for a major renovation expected to take about eight weeks, with the adjoining cafe to remain open during this period. “We want to reopen in time for the spring school holidays, which start September 20,” venue Manager Benjamin Abbott said, adding that, as well as renovating to improve the structure and design for practical purposes, the

place will be updated with a “modern beachy look to suit today’s market”. “The building is 25 years old and needs renovating. “We’ve got such a great location and we want to make the most of it,” Abbott said. “We’re knocking down walls and opening it right up, ripping out the bar and redesigning it, and ripping up the floors and going for polished concrete.” The venue will also be rebranding during this period, including a name change to the V-Wall Pavilion

and updates to everything from furniture and the interior colour scheme to logos and staff uniforms. “Even though we’re rebranding and ‘pavilion’ might sound a bit posh, we’re still a venue for the locals and our focus will always be families, kids and value for money, which will also bring people into the Valley,” Abbott said. “We’ll be introducing a new menu from our famous chef, Rodney Talbot, with a massive focus on local produce and seafood.”

The V-Wall Cafe will remain open during the renovations, providing a perfect place for fish and chips and a cold beer, according to Abbott. “We’re transferring the liquor licence from the tavern to the cafe,” he said, adding that, as well as allowing part of the business to continue operating and serving the community, this would help with redeploying tavern staff during the renovations. “Because the venue is owned by Ingenia and a big part of their business ethos

By Sandra MOON AS schools return after the school holidays the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) have reassured staff and students on the status of the Higher School Certificate (HSC). 2021 HSC students have been reassured by the NESA’s COVID-19 Response Committee that the exams will go ahead in a COVID-safe way. Protocols in place include students and staff not attending exams if they have COVID-19 symptoms, received a positive COVID test or have been identified as a close contact. Other measures include the use of perspex screens between examiner and student for oral language exams. Students and staff will additionally be regularly reminded to wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes and avoid touching their face. Considering the emerging COVID exposure sites, News Of The Area spoke with Mr Greg Wilson, a member of the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council Inc about the impact on schools in the local area. “At this stage for schools outside of the Sydney metropolitan areas the COVID measures will have less of an impact, than for those physically in a COVID hotspot,” he said. “The NSW government is working with schools to get the best for students by helping them and supporting them at this stage, especially students with major work to be done.” Chair of the NESA COVID-19 Response Committee, Professor Peter Shergold, said teachers, students, parents and carers are understandably concerned about the impact of the current COVID-19 situation on senior students, and that a number of changes to NESA’s rules have been made to support principals, teachers and students during the current outbreak. As approved by the NESA Board earlier this year, schools already have the flexibility to change their Year 11 and HSC assessment programs to accommodate the impact of COVID,” Professor Shergold said. Additionally, earlier this week, the NESA COVID-19 Response Committee agreed to a two-week extension of the deadline for schools to submit their HSC assessment marks. Vocational education and training (VET) students in Year 11 and 12 who can’t complete their work placement due to COVID restrictions will remain eligible for the HSC. “We continue to work closely with NSW Health to plan for contingencies should they be needed. “At present, the HSC oral language, performance and practical exams will go ahead as scheduled in term 3 and written exams in term 4. “My message to students is to focus on your studies and look after your wellbeing. “Arrangements are in place to ensure no student is disadvantaged by COVID restrictions.”

Area, “I like to base some of my art works on the fibonacci spiral principle.” Keith Tait is an extremely visual artist, progressing from psychedelic doodlings to theatre backdrops, while working as a Theatre Designer. He’s an artist who loves exploring colour textures and tone, with a strong influence from the Impressionist period. “I'm a visual person and am quite happy to allow the observer to find what they will in my paintings,” he said.

Eugenio Martini is an environmental artist who creates artworks from recycled, reused and found objects, including micro plastics. His 3D artworks often include lighting to illuminate awareness of environmental issues. “Using roadkill bones in my 3D artworks is my way of honouring the death toll of Australian fauna," said Eugenio. Keith summed up, “All

three of us are members of Nambucca Valley Arts Council, and exhibit in the Stringer Gallery regularly. “We are also neighbours, so have plenty of time to share our mutual enthusiasm for art. “We approached the Maclean Valley Art Gallery after a shared visit to see a

THE Rusty Iron Rally, due to take place from 4-5 September at the Macksville Showgrounds, has been cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. “Plans have been well underway for this year's event, being our 25th Annual Rally, which had to be put off last year due to Covid. “Due to the outbreak of the current strain the Committee held a meeting on Sunday 18 July and decided it had no option other than to cancel,” said Elaine South. Members have opted to proceed with an online ‘virtual’ rally on the Rusty Iron Rally Facebook page, so

Bluebird participants Lee and James fly into the Nambucca Valley workforce By Tamara MCWILLIAM LOCAL disability support provider Bluebird Support Services offers a wonderful program called ‘Finding and Keeping a Job Services’. This is designed to help Bluebird participants learn new skills in order for them to become job ready and work independently on the open employment market. “We are pleased to announce over the past 6 months we have worked with two Bluebird participants to connect them with work experience in the local community,” Bluebird Support Services coordinator Olivia Noble told News Of The Area. “Lee commenced work experience at the Macksville Ex Services Club and with support and assistance from Bluebird Support Workers to

obtain job qualifications which included an RSA certificate she has now found her first paid employment in the open market at the age of 57.” Lee isn’t the only successful Bluebird to fly into the Nambucca Valley workforce. Bluebird Support Services have supported James with work experience at the Nambucca Valley Aquaponics farm. His tasks include harvesting all the fresh locally grown vegetables on the farm, packaging the edible flowers and general farm hand assistant duties. Bluebird works with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants to help them achieve their goals. “James had an NDIS goal to secure work in mainstream employment,” Olivia said. “Bluebird provided on-site support to ensure James felt comfortable and supported while at work and helped

Also included in the exhibition is a collection of Indigenous artworks that are owned by SWFW. The exhibition, according to Mr Gonsalves, is on to celebrate NAIDOC. Mr Gonsalves said, “We wanted to do something in the community for NAIDOC.

“In this exhibition we have highlighted and showcased artists from Nambucca Valley.” SWFW received a small grant from Aboriginal Affairs NSW to put on the exhibition. Enquiries for purchasing artwork that is featured by Indigenous artists from the Nambucca Valley will be accepted and passed onto the

artist. Those pieces that make up part of the SWFW permanent collection are for display only. Saltwater Freshwater Arts is located at Nambucca Valley Phoenix Ltd, Ground Level Art Gallery, 88 High Street Bowraville. The exhibition is open until 31 July.

Accompanying Vena on stage, in the unique style of Archive’s Town Hall Series, will be a live, working artist. “For Talarm we will see Aisha Tai Chiu-Mei creating a class masterpiece on stage while Vena performs,” SaraJayne Prince, Founder of Archive MNC told News Of The Area. “We will also have some of Aisha’s work exhibited around the hall.” Aisha is well known locally as the in-house artist teaching at Phoenix School of Art at

Bowraville. Completing the trio of cultural delights is the feast provider, Caitlin Hockey from Bush Grazing. “Caitlin’s specialty is nourishing, plant-based dishes inspired by her grandmother's home cooking and infused with native bush food ingredients,” said Sara. Caitlin sources all her ingredients from local Nambucca Valley, Gumbaynggirr country farmers and producers. The charming venue, built in 1914, will be decked out in a wonderland of fairy lights and rustic accessories, creating the feeling of a cosy loungeroom. “As a photographer I have an appreciation for lighting and an eye for design.” Sara founded Archive through a love of music and cultural events and saw an opportunity locally. “I felt there was an opening for unique events designed to bring creatives from different disciplines together: music, visual arts and catering. “I really like the idea of an intimate setting which brings together people who appreciate the same things, in a sort of ‘soft’ networking style.”

'Australiana' at the Stringer Gallery NAMBUCCA Valley Arts Council is proud to present two new exhibitions at the Stringer Gallery in Ridge Street. Audrey Williams, as the August Artist of the Month, is presenting ‘Australiana’, which showcases a selection of pastels based on Australian landscapes and fauna. Audrey has been an active Arts Council member for many years as both a volunteer and an exhibiting artist. Audrey’s great love for the Australian environment was enhanced when she made two amazing journeys throughout Australia, all alone, in her fitted-out Toyota Hiace, back in 2003/04. What exciting times she had, travelling to places like Cairns, Kakadu, Mt Isa, Katherine, Darwin, Alice Springs, King’s Canyon, Uluru, Broome, Albany, Kalgoorlie,

Adelaide and then back to her home in Nambucca! These places gave her a wealth of images and ideas for her creative painting endeavours, which was a new direction for her after her travels. Previously, Audrey had worked as a music teacher at Macksville High School and gave private tuition for many years. One of the most rewarding aspects for the intrepid traveller was meeting interesting personalities along the way and seeing first-hand how people supported each other to enable the regions to survive and thrive. Strata Scheme Sting LUCY and George were recently engaged to be married and began looking for their first home. They soon purchased a duplex in a small strata complex, consisting of just two lots. The duplexes shared a main wall and the common property consisted of a small garden shed, a driveway, a courtyard and a grassed area. Prior to exchanging contracts Lucy and George were informed that the vendor was unable to provide records of strata management meetings and a capital works fund was never established. The owners did however share payment of the building insurance premiums. Everything went well for the first couple of years. Then Dave, the neighbour, decided that the driveway and courtyard on his side of the complex needed upgrading. Dave obtained a couple of quotes and settled on Peter the Paver. Dave met with Lucy and George, who agreed that it would make the place look great. Dave had the work done and Peter’s invoice came to $15,000. Dave then sought to recover half this cost from Lucy and George. Lucy and George were shocked as it was their understanding that each owner was responsible for their own “area”. They sought legal advice and were informed that as the land is strata titled and there were no special by-laws to the contrary, that the strata law applied, whereby all lot owners are liable to contribute towards capital works. However, they were also advised that Dave may not have complied with the formal requirements regarding notice and voting at meetings of the owners corporation. This is a broad question. There's a big difference between a Labrador sitting patiently waiting for a bit of pork gristle and a Poodle yelping underfoot and making everyone agitated. It really depends on how well-behaved the pet is. My own dog has better table manners than some of my family members. She doesn’t leave food on her plate, she doesn’t text at the table or argue about cleaning up after the meal, and she certainly doesn’t complain that we are eating chicken two nights in a row. Instead, she sits quietly, usually at the feet of the weakest link, and receives furtive treats. It’s lovely that you eat together as a family at the table instead of balancing your meals on your lap in front of the tele, so I’d suggest that your degustation manners are in fact superior to many others, with or without your furry companion. Big Bash is Back

By David WIGLEY THE Big Bash is back as the Sydney Sixers return to Coffs Harbour for two blockbuster clashes at C.ex International Stadium. The first match takes place on New Year's Day, 1 January 2022, against the Melbourne Renegades and the second match is on Sunday 9 January against last year's champions, the Perth Scorchers. Steve Meakins, the Cricket Club Officer for Northern NSW, described the last Big Bash match in Coffs Harbour as epic, one of the best he has ever seen. “The last match here was epic, the Adelaide Strikers set the Sixers a big total, the pendulum swung throughout, and the match went down to the final over, everyone was on the edge of their seats. “It was absolutely sensational, and to see the

Sydney Sixers finish the match with a six over long on was the icing on the cake, the crowd erupted. “The atmosphere was awesome, the crowd were doing Mexican waves, singing, cheering, the wacky men were in top form, you just couldn’t have asked for a better experience, I can’t wait for the next one, what a great way to start the new year,” enthused Steve. On Sunday 9 January the Sixers will play last year’s competition winners the Perth Scorchers and Steve is expecting another sell out “The last Big Bash in Coffs Harbour between the Sixers and Strikers sold out well in advance, my phone was ringing hot with people desperate for tickets, I just had to say sorry, sold out is sold out. “I expect it will be another sell out especially if there are any restrictions in numbers, I’d recommend locking in

your tickets early. “Cricket is really popular in the region, people will travel big distances to watch matches of this magnitude, it’s great for the town, the more the better,” said Steve. CELESTE Cameron from Macksville Soccer Club was named a finalist for referee of the year by Northern NSW Female Football Week. Celeste grew up around the Macksville Soccer Club, starting off in the junior ranks and then progressing to the women’s senior team where she plays on the right wing for the Stingers. Due to a lack of match officials in the region, Celeste decided to do something about it and hasn’t looked back since. “I began refereeing in 2018 because we rarely had referees for the senior games in Macksville so my sister and I did the course and started running lines. “In 2019 I went to the Talented Officials Program (TOP) and met a lot of high level female referees. “This inspired me to continue and excel with refereeing, as there were very rarely any other female referees in North Coast Football. “This year, I was

Darcy’s top five finish in the qualifying event at Chambers Bay Golf Club in Seattle secured her invitation to the U.S. Amateur. Hurricane Winds Bowl over Bowlers By Angry’s CORNER

IN what can only be described as a windy week on the Nambucca Heads bowling green, bowlers were left wondering whether they were bowling wrong biases as the winds took hold. Wednesday the 14 July attracted a large quality field. The winning team was Big Bad Bruce Mason, Pushbike Paul Michel and Stan Flack. Second place was taken out by Peter Dawe, M Cislis and Laurie Medbury. Third place was taken out by Ken State of Origin Rostron and Mark the navigator Blackford. The lucky losers for the day were Tony the President Stokes, Cec Sizzling Smith and Dennis the Menace Graham. The lucky bowler for the day was Dennis Graham who got $15 but unfortunately couldn’t win the jackpot of $150.

Friday July 16 saw 54 players take to the green, while others sat on the sidelines because they couldn’t find anyone to bowl with them as they have no friends. The winners of the day were Tony Stokes, Tommy Turbo Reynolds and young Jack Young. Second place went to Billy Blair, Peter Fredo Fredericks and Mike Ryan. Third place went to a fours game of Grant Lawrence, Dangerous Danny Curran, Terry Snowden and Albert Crowther. The lucky losers were Errol Speedy Green, Peter Dawe and Chris D’el boux. THERE was a lot of activity on the bowling green on Saturday and Sunday with elimination games in both minor and major singles being played. The wind on Saturday certainly tested player skills. Wayne Ross had a good weekend after beating Keith Hickey on Saturday in the minors he backed up on Sunday to have a win against Mick McMahon in the major.

Andrew Shearer advanced to the final of the major after overcoming Peter Fox jr in Saturday's elimination. In a consistent game Paul Ward eliminated Mick May. Phil now comes up against Wayne Ross to see who meets Andrew Shearer in the final. There has been a marked improvement over the last couple of years in the skills and number of players doing well. There is no standout.

THE Bowraville Goannas defeated the Hastings Vikings 17-12 last Saturday in the Mid North Coast Rugby Union competition at Port Macquarie. Bowraville’s Jhye Martin scored the first try in a break-away run as he sprinted half the length of the field to cross the line for the Goannas. Beau Dean Marks followed up with the second try as he crushed his way over the line from a penalty tap. Bowraville coach David Foley applauded the high intensity of his team’s first half play. “On a very windy afternoon down in Port Macquarie, the Goannas came out to a flying

Despite Bill Coughlan clearly being a bit salty after his swim, and first round defeat in the pairs, Bill decided he would be a good clubman. Peter Dawe was needing a sub in the quarter finals of the pairs due to his teammate being unavailable. Bill being the good bloke that he is, decided to help Peter out by volunteering to play when Peter was left a player short. Obviously, Bill doesn’t

know that once you are defeated in a knockout tournament you can’t go and play for another team. This was quite the first, as Bill is now the only player to be beaten twice in a knockout tournament. Anyone that wants a game with Bill should get in quick as he is in high demand, but don’t worry if you miss out, I’m sure he’ll still say yes to a game. This week mixed club selected triples are on Wednesday at 1pm, men’s nominated fours / triples are on Friday at 1pm mixed club selected triples are on Sunday morning at 10.30am. The final of the men’s pairs is carded for this Saturday at 1pm, however both teams have players involved in the Urunga Sunshine fours tournament this weekend. If the Urunga Sunshine fours are called off due to extenuating circumstances then the pairs will be played this Saturday at 1pm.

If you can remember tuning in for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Opening Ceremony with excitement and pride, you are probably grappling with a diﬀerent sentiment for the belated 32nd Olympics. Whether it’s a sense of relief (some semblance of normality) or anxiety (hopefully it runs smoothly), there’s no denying sport’s ability to transcend barriers and entertain. Tonight’s Opening Ceremony, from Tokyo’s National Stadium, promises to be a triumph of optimism and spectacle. The primetime Olympic broadcasting team includes Hamish McLachlan and Abbey Gelmi.

It took an epic leap of faith for former skydivers Leigh and Richard to follow their property dreams, but this thrill-seeking couple clearly enjoy a challenge. With no experience in building or restoration to speak of, the pair have sold their Derbyshire home and bought a derelict 17th-century flour mill in Cornwall with an ambitious plan to create a four-storey, threebedroom home in just 12 months that retains as much of the heritagelisted building’s existing ‘history and magic’ as possible. With rotten timber, an unstable floor and a limited budget, presenter Kevin McCloud (right) has some hard truths for these high-flying renovators.

Sea Eagles’ young guns in top spot with two rounds to go

THE Macksville Sea Eagles Under 18s went down 22-18 to the Sawtell Panthers last

Thursday night, but remain on top of the Tooheys New Group 2 competition with two

rounds to go. The first and second placed teams were locked at

Panthers coach Peter Barrett applauded the great rivalry between the two teams who have both beaten each other twice. “There was a great atmosphere at our home ground and the young blokes showed great commitment. “I am very proud of them and hopefully we can move on. “There’s been a great rivalry between the Panthers in second spot and Macksville in first position, we’ve played each other four times and we’ve won two and Macksville have won two and there’s never been more than six points between the two teams in any of the matches, it’s a great rivalry,” said Peter.
