News Of The Area joined Nambucca Valley Croquet Club for the opening of their new footbridge allowing better access to their playing courts. The Club moved to the E J Biffin Playing Fields in 2017 converting the old tennis court area into three grass courts, one full size, and two half size courts. “It’s taken four years to get where we are today, a dream in the making,” said Club President, Kerrie Crooks. Cass told News Of The Area, “One strong theme that emerged from community conversations is that our young people want to hear and see more local success stories from those who faced the same barriers and hardships but pushed through to have great success.

“They wanted to have higher hopes and dreams, and be shown that anything is possible, even if you grew up right here in the valley.”

This inspired Cass and Molly to start codesigning with young people, and those important to them, a film and series featuring ten local youths who could share their stories of resilience and strength.

Break-in at Valla Beach cafe By Brooke LEWIS POLICE are investigating a break-in at The Beach House Providore in Valla Beach that took place at 1.45am on Saturday, June 12. CCTV footage shows an intruder wearing a hoodie and gloves kicking the door in, and owner Jessica Waddell said the perpetrator took the till drawer, a chef’s knife and a bread knife, leaving behind other valuables, such as an iPad. “He must’ve been really desperate to do that. “We’re a little breakfast cafe, we don’t have money onsite. “He did more damage than

Graham Harris, Club Vice President said, “Council has been very helpful in getting the courts established, especially Tim Woodward whose advice has been generous and helpful.” The large culvert between the clubhouse and the courts made getting to the courts quite difficult for the older croquet members, and for manoeuvring equipment. The Committee decided to look at getting a footbridge built to span the culvert. “The bridge has made getting to the courts much easier for our older members, and reduces the risk of damage to machinery we use for upkeep of the grounds,” said Club member Gary Biden. Club Vice President Graham Harris stated the project was costed at $13,000, and funded with a Community Builders Grant sourced with help from Council’s Grants and Contributions Officer, Teresa Boorer, and funds from Nambucca Heads RSL. “Community Builder’s was $9000, and Nambucca Heads RSL contributed $4,000,” Graham said. The Croquet Club is for young and old alike providing a social outlet, exercise, and mental wellbeing for its members. Kerri Crooks said, “Our youngest players are 11 years, and the eldest 91 years. “Croquet is a tactical game, keeping the body and mind working, it’s good for those who can’t

NEWS Of The Area spoke recently with Matt Leibrandt, Manager of Infrastructure Services for Nambucca Valley Council, regarding the concrete slab that has been laid at Bellwood Park, positioned to the left of the toilet blocks. In response to community feedback and youth enthusiasm for a basketball court to be located in Nambucca Heads, Council has responded. Considerable planning has gone into the design and position of the court, with Mr Leibrandt stating that, “The main issue was noise and passive surveillance. “The court needed to be visible from the road. “Council were also worried about the caravan park for noise, but after consultation regarding the positioning of the ring the park was happy.” A contractor had been organised to install basketball rings and put a

surface on the courts shortly after News Of The Area spoke to Mr Leibrandt. “It’s that textured rubberised finish so it is a little bit easier on the feet. “It’s not full rubber. “To make it a bit easier on the joints.”

Tucked up in a corner near the new basketball court is an outdoor table tennis table.

According to Mr Leibrandt the court is positioned up the top to keep it out of the wind.

“Because Nambucca is a pretty windy place. “We might need to plant a few more screeners up there. “We will see how it goes.” Bellwood Cafe, located opposite Bellwood Park, has agreed to hire out equipment for use at the table tennis courts. “This park is one of our most popular family parks in the Valley, and definitely in Nambucca Heads. “It is mainly set up for little kids. “If we have a family coming down for a BBQ and they have 15 -16 yrs old with them there is nothing for them. “So we figured here we go, here is something for them.” “We have been doing a fair bit of work to this park.”

Mr Leibrandt also outlined some of the future plans for Bellwood Park, saying that shade cloth will be extended once funding is found, gym equipment will be put elsewhere and a “Corkscrew slippery dip will be put where gym equipment is now”. This slippery dip is being added because there is not a big kids slippery dip at the park. Mr Leibrandt said that the new one will be for, “The 8-12 age group because the little one is a bit boring for them.” There will be a structure similar to the recycled timber climber at Gordon park also added to Bellwood Park.

Little Chicks from Bluebird Support Service learn about fire safety By Tamara MCWILLIAM THE Little Chicks from Bluebird Support Service attended the Macksville fire brigade on June 10 to learn about fire safety. The Little Chicks program is a branch of Bluebird Support Service and is available to all children with disabilities in the Nambucca Valley with NDIS funding. This excursion was the latest social and community inclusion activity where the children were taught the importance of fire safety and how to contact 000 in case of an emergency. Local members of the Macksville fire brigade gave their time to teach the children and show them around the fire truck and give them a look at how the fire hoses work. Thursday evening’s event at the Macksville Fire Brigade was a huge success.

“We would like to thank the Macksville Fire brigade,” Olivia said, “Especially David Brunsdon (Bruno) and Ken Capell for giving their time to our Little Chicks.”

Little Chicks activities are built around fostering all kinds of social, physical, creative and language skills.

A large range of programs and services are available including: Music, Dance, Social Events, Sport and Fitness, Games, Arts and Crafts. “Our Educational Leader has developed simple movement activities for each child to participate in, working with local occupational and behaviour specialists we offer activities that encourage socialising, fine motor skills, gross motor skills,

What knot to do for safe tree-sitting By Andrea FERRARI

A CLIMBING Workshop at Camp Nunguu is the latest activity offered to the community interested in protecting koala habitats and wildlife in general. Led by Peter ‘Peck’ Firth, an experienced climber and seasoned tree-sitting forest protector, Saturday’s (June 13) Workshop began by acknowledging Gumbaynggirr country upon which the camp stands within Newry State Forest which is under imminent threat of being logged, potentially causing chaos in our koala community. “Peck gave a bit of a talk about the camp being named Nunguu by Uncle Bud, meaning Golden Kangaroo, which grounded people to start the day,” Tom told News Of The Area. Safety is an emphasis of the Workshop, and respect between each other supports safety protocols. “Then it was on to why being in a tree is a really good tactic to protect a tree which is under threat of being logged. “An hour-and-a-half is spent on learning useful climb knots, then it was in

the harness to master how to single line up and down a tree. “It’s a simple climbing style. “The equipment is basic and safe because if you get arrested the police confiscate it.” Workshop attendees often stay over for dinner at the camp – enjoying screenings of short films and musicians and soaking up the convivial atmosphere.

“Grassroots community climb days and other events like these are not just about having fun, they show the wider public, Forestry Corporation and the Government that we are organised and prepared to protect Newry State Forest from destruction,” Margaret, 43, from Nambucca told News Of The Area. “Coming to Camp Nunguu has been a big eye-opener into

New bouldering wall for teens in Bowraville

stay active and engaged.” Mr Leibrandt explained that direct public transport is available to get to the park via bus, so that teenagers that don’t live in Bowraville can make use of the facilities. According to Mr Leibrandt, the Council really hopes that the bouldering wall proves popular. “There is a plan to also

put one in Anderson Park. “If it becomes popular we will put more in. “We are seeing how it goes to start with.” There is certainly cool stuff happening locally in the teenage recreation space. At the time of speaking with News Of The Area, the bouldering wall was half built, so it won’t be long until it is finished and ready for climbing.

to gather and connect, so it's not surprising that we continue to see strong demand for projects that build community resilience by investing in local community assets and infrastructure, particularly the maintenance of community halls. “And, as gathering restrictions ease, we are seeing more requests for work on outdoor spaces and for community events, as people come together to strengthen community engagement and participation,” Ms Egleton said.

Argents Hill and Bowraville projects receive grants

THE Foundation of Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) has awarded $385,095 in grants for 26 projects that will help to strengthen smaller remote, rural and regional communities throughout New South Wales, including projects in Argents Hill and Bowraville, through its Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program. The SRC program is collaboratively funded,

and its broad scope enables smaller remote, rural, and regional communities to receive funding for a wide range of initiatives that are led by local people and address local needs. Within the latest funding round, Nambucca Valley Phoenix Limited received a $25,000 grant for their project ‘The Phoenix Depot - Building Community Resilience’, which will go towards the provision of a teacher, equipment and

tools for the establishment of a community facility in Bowraville. Also awarded a grant was the Argents Hill Hall, operated by the Nambucca Valley Council, who will receive $24,979 towards an upgrade of the Argents Hill Hall Kitchen. This is intended to increase local capacity to support recovery activities and increase preparedness for future disasters. The awarded grants will

Councils will use the funding to target specific local road maintenance. The total Roads to Recovery allocations for 201920 to 2023-24 are, Bellingen Shire Council $2,973,126 with a further $ 11,361 for the May 2021 quarterly payment; Coffs Harbour City Council $6,910,480; Kempsey Shire Council $5,800,940 and $74,750; Nambucca Valley Council $3,844,327 and $174,750; and, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council $9,133,088 and $872,61. Mr Conaghan said he was pleased with the breakdown of the funding allocations for

councils within the Cowper electorate. “The Roads to Recovery funding in Cowper will allow councils across the area to progress a number of highpriority projects, using local knowledge to deliver the best local roads,” Mr Conaghan said. “The Federal Government is committed to getting Australians home sooner and safer, no matter where they live. “As chair of the Federal Government’s Road Safety Committee, I recognise and understand how important this funding is in maintaining and improving our road network.” Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Kevin Hogan said the Federal Government has committed an additional $100 million per

year to the Roads to Recovery Program from 2019–20, as part of the Local and State Government Road Safety Package announced in the 2019–20 Budget. “From 2013–14 to 2023– 24, the Government will provide $6.2 billion under the Roads to Recovery Program, with an ongoing commitment of $500 million each year following,” Mr Hogan said. “Assisting local councils to maintain and improve roads under their jurisdiction is a big part of that, which is why we are also funding a $2.5 billion Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program and the bringing forward of $1.3 billion of the 2021–22 Financial Assistance Grant payment.” More information on these programs is available at www. infrastructure.gov.au.

Councillor conduct code under review THE NSW Government has commissioned an independent review of the statutory framework for cracking down on badly behaved councillors. The review will examine if penalties for councillors breaching the code of conduct remain sufficient and ways to reduce the time and cost of dealing with complaints. NAIDOC Week event set for Bellwood Park By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN

NAIDOC Week 2021, with the theme Heal Country, is approaching quickly. Originally NAIDOC stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The Committee was once responsible for organising events to celebrate NAIDOC Week. According to the National NAIDOC Committee, ‘NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. ‘NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life’. The week sees celebrations held across Australia each year, and some of these will be held in Nambucca Valley. One currently being planned is being organised by a small committed team from Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative. This free NAIDOC event will be held at Bellwood Park on 9 July from 10am-2pm. There will be delicious free food, information stalls,

an Elders and kids tent, activity tents, and a stage with live music. The Bellwood event will begin with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country. Co-organiser of the Bellwood Park NAIDOC event, Uncle Micklo Jarrett wants “to share and celebrate q

Macksville Polocrosse to host NSW Club Championships

THE Macksville Polocrosse Club is back in the saddle and competing at the top of their game after Covid-19 put a dampener on the Polocrosse sport Australia wide. Each year every Polocrosse team in New South Wales hosts a carnival. It is with immense pride, the Macksville Polocrosse Club has been selected to host the biggest carnival of the year called the NSW Club championships. Being such a small club with only 8-9 active members at full capacity, they face many challenges in hosting such a large event. Macksville doesn’t have a designated training facility or an area with enough room to host a normal carnival, therefore a carnival at this magnitude would be impossible to host locally. It has been decided the event will take place at the Equestrian Centre at Hawthorn Park in Grafton. The only other facility is Nana Glen but it is often very busy. Grafton was selected as it is a little more central for those coming down from Queensland. “We have a lot of local sponsors and with the recent events such as floods, fires and Covid-19 it is amazing these businesses are still supporting both financially and by volunteering their time. “We are so thankful,” Macksville Polocrosse member Alyssa told News Of The Area. “We have had some large agricultural companies sponsor this event which is a great help also.” The Macksville Polocrosse team are well on the way

to being ready for the July 30-August 1 Championships. The need for more handson volunteers is top on the list of priorities for this club. They expect to host 60 teams at the Championships meaning there will be just under 400 participants. “Polocrosse is a family event, we expect a very large turnout for this event,” Alyssa said. When asked how to best explain polocrosse Alyssa smiled and answered, “It is likened to rugby on horseback.

Photo: K Connors Photography. “A cross between Netball, Lacrosse and Rugby. “It is a very technical game and very fast paced. “It is amazing fun, it is one of the few sports mum, dad and the kids can play together, even be on the same team,” Alyssa added. The Macksville Polocrosse Club is a very skilled one, consisting of a top side and a few extra players that join in the mixed teams at each

carnival. All but two players from the top team have played at State and National level. Throughout this year, the Macksville team have dominated the polocrosse carnivals for wins and at every carnival so far, one or more of their members have been selected for personal prizes and awards. “It is a very competitive team,” Alyssa said of this small

dynamic club. There is a new initiative happening in the Polocrosse industry at the moment in hope of encouraging new players to the game. It is called Blue Bandage. The interested player comes to a carnival, pays $20 and the club supplies them with the equipment needed to have a go. Experienced players take the ‘Blue Bandage’ players out

Wildlife Carer Grants double in 2021 THE NSW Wildlife Council (NWC), the peak body for wildlife rehabilitation in NSW, has doubled the 20212022 grants budget to $40K for wildlife carers who play a vital role in the survival of native fauna. The NWC aims to achieve optimal outcomes for native fauna, representing 26 licensed wildlife groups and more than 3,000 wildlife carers in the state. The Rehabilitator Enclosure and Equipment Grants program acknowledges the pivotal role played not only by wildlife rehabilitators, but

also by their groups. The 2020 grants assisted a number of rehabilitation projects involving wildlife from joeys, wombats, flying foxes and raptors to marine reptiles, whales, dolphins and more! In announcing the 2021/22 wildlife rehabilitator grants program, Audrey Koosmen, NSW Wildlife Council Chair, said, “A few benefits that have come from the bushfires and cost savings from COVID lock down are that the Council has been able to double its budget for 2021 -2022 grants for wildlife rehabilitators to $40,000.” Grant applications for equipment and enclosure projects ranging from $500

to $2,500 will be accepted between 18 June 2021 and 31 July 2021. Mrs Koosmen added that generous public donations during the 2019/20 bushfires and other cost savings has enabled the Council to put additional funding into helping wildlife rescuers and carers with equipment and enclosures they need in their volunteering with native wildlife. “It is a real privilege to be able to provide help to these volunteers in their often 365-day-a-week volunteering for injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife. “The public gave generously to our members’ work with wildlife and this

additional funding will go where the donating public expect it to go – to directly benefit native animals that need our help,” she said. Wildlife Council member groups cover the whole of NSW with 3,000 volunteers trained to look after wildlife that needs help. The NWC encourages eligible authorised wildlife rehabilitators and licenced rehabilitation groups to apply. The NSW Club Championship event will have food available and bars serving alcohol, and on Saturday night at the event the participants will be entertained by DJ Marcus Ulric, followed by a dinner with the facilities of the bar available. Draft Coastal Management Program ON 29 April 2021 Council endorsed the Nambucca Valley Draft Coastal Management Program (CMP) for exhibition. This draft program is intended to replace Council’s existing Estuary Management Plan and Council’s Existing Coastal Zone Management Plan.

The program will guide Council’s future Delivery Program and Integrated Planning and Reporting framework as it relates to the coastal environments of the Valley. Council’s draft CMP has been prepared with funding assistance and technical guidance provided by the

States Coastal Program administered by the Department of Planning Industry and Environment. The draft program covers all coast and estuarine environments from Oyster Creek in the northern part of the Valley to Scotts Head in the south. The exhibition of

the program provides an opportunity for the community to have input into the draft program. The draft CMP will be available on public exhibition from Friday 11 June to Wednesday 14 July 2021 and can be viewed at Council’s Administration Centre, 44 Princess Street,

THE Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage and Museum, is a Nambucca Valley historic gem, and will soon be host to an event which is sure to delight local quilters. President Mrs Leanne Welsh told News of The Area, “We are proud to be hosting a small quilt show for the Veranda Post Patch Workers on Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27.” This fabulous event is not to be missed and will be running from 11am - 4pm on the Saturday, and 10am -12pm on the Sunday. This is not the usual time the Quilters hold their annual show. Due to the disruptions of Covid-19, the Quilters Easter events were cancelled meaning no shows have been held for the past two years. It was because of this, the volunteers at the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage and Museum kindly offered to host a small show around the museum buildings this June. This show will have a

$5.00 entry fee, which will include viewing of the quilt display, and visit around the museum. REFUGEE Week runs from Sunday, June 20 to Saturday, June 26 2-21. Every year Refugee week is held during the week that includes June 20, which is World Refugee Day. The theme this year is Unity. Refugee Week seeks to raise awareness of issues that affect refugees. The Bellingen and Nambucca Districts Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) is an active group in and around the Valley that works to raise awareness about issues relating to q

refugees and to fundraise. “Our most recent fundraiser, which was a lunch followed by an auction, and attended by 45 people, raised more than $3,000 for the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre,” shared Mr Griffin, RAR organiser. Donations received by the RAR go to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASC), located in Newtown NSW. Roadside Demonstrations, held by RAR to raise awareness are an important part of what RAR does. According to Mr Griffin, “The important thing is that we are a very real and visible presence at the roadside with our placards and banners.” RAR also holds information and merchandise stalls, the last being at the Valla Beach market on 5 June. Mr Griffin states that, “We had lots of helpers on our stall, collected 75 signatures on our open letter to the Leader of the Opposition, sold raffle tickets for our latest fundraiser, sent 24 postcards to various political leaders, and had lots of fruitful conversations with market-goers.”

Fire Safety booklets were handed to residents during the visit as well. Once again, the local Fire & Rescue team displayed their total commitment and professionalism to all residents in the Village during their visit.

GORDON Rutty from Transplant Australia will be walking the ‘Walk to End the Wait’ trek from the Gold Coast to Sydney, a massive 900km. He will be walking through the Nambucca Valley on Wednesday 23 June. The aim of this walk is to raise awareness of Transplant Australia. Gordons journey with Transplant Australia began after losing two close friends, one to a brain tumour and the other to cancer. It was then Gordon

Squatter’s rights appeal case

ROBERT owns a property that shares a common boundary with a property owned by Andrew. Andrew’s property is burdened by a right-of-way which was established to enable access for a night soil carter to collect waste from outhouses many years ago. The right-of-way is no longer able to be used due to various fences that have been erected over the years. In 2005, Robert undertook renovations on his property and erected a fence, incorporating the right-of-way into his backyard and closing-off access to Andrew. He erects a barbecue area on the right-of-way. When Andrew sells his property, the purchasers realise that their property should include the area designated as the right-of-way and they ask Robert to remove the barbecue area and the fence. Robert commences proceedings, claiming that the purchasers are statute barred from reclaiming the land on the basis that he has been in “adverse possession” for more than 12 years. The trial judge makes orders in Robert’s favour to the effect that he is entitled to become the registered proprietor of the right-of-way area by way of “possessory title” at common law. Andrew appeals the decision. The Court of Appeal finds that Robert’s creation of the barbecue area and the storage of garden equipment on the right-of-way constituted taking possession of the property and upholds the trial judge’s decision on the basis that adverse possession is an exception to the principle of “indefeasibility of title”. Andrew also claimed that his bank, as the holder of a mortgage over the property, should have been notified of Robert’s claim. The Court considers that any reduction in value of Andrew’s property was minimal and that any defence to Robert’s claim on that basis would not be successful. THIS morning in the supermarket I challenged a fellow shopper on her choice of selecting caged eggs over free range. I felt some remorse afterwards as I normally mind my own business and don’t like to be rude to people, however on the other hand I feel torn as I find the cruelty these poor chickens have to endure just to save a few cents at the checkout is worth calling someone out on their choice. If we all stay silent on these cruelty issues they will continue. Was I overstepping the mark? How do you see it?

Reporter in the spotlight: Tamara McWilliam

IN May of 2021, Macksville’s Tamara McWilliam took on the latest challenge in her writing career, signing on as a reporter for the inaugural editions of Nambucca Valley News Of The Area. However, Tamara started her writing career with a detox book. “It seemed like the natural thing to do at the time,” she said. “Being a Naturopath I felt that was the area I should be writing in.” Half way through the Detox book she stopped, finding it too similar to work, realising she needed an outlet in order to unwind from the day to day grind of being a Naturopath and business owner. In a bold move she started writing a contemporary romance and suspense novel that had nothing to do with natural medicine. Within a period of eighteen months Tamara had written and self-published a five book collection called ‘The Willow Tree Series’. “I found it relaxing, I would go to bed at night when everyone in my family was asleep and start typing away,” she said. Following that Tamara wrote a novel based on a true story about a local couple in the area called ‘Beneath the Snow of Gnojnik.’ This novel was published by an English publishing company and successfully sold throughout Europe. It didn’t stop there, she went on to write another three-book series called ‘The Mosconi series’ and recently published the sixth book in the ‘Willow Tree Series’. When asked what sort of books she would describe hers to be she replied, “I tend to class myself as a gritty author. “Throughout my writing journey I have failed to conform to the classical means of being an author. “I write in the first person and tend to be

Have you seen that advertisement on television where the little pig sings 'Somewhere' from West Side Story before it flies out of its factory farm? I tell you, that ad absolutely kills me. It brings me to tears. It is so well executed (terrible word choice) that for a moment I can imagine a world where there is no animal cruelty. Yeah, and pigs might fly, some will say. Well, in this ad, they do. It is abhorrent that supermarkets still stock eggs from caged chickens. Offering them at a cheaper rate than free-range is negligent. I agree with you that staying silent on cruelty issues will mean they continue. Perhaps the answer is to approach the supermarket's manager and ask why they are still providing an option that supports inhumane practices. Having owned chickens, I know that they each have individual personalities. They deserve room to move, a place to have dust baths, sunlight, and the ability to stretch their wings. I wonder if the caged-egg cartons had pictures of baby chickens with part of their beaks removed so they don't peck each other to death from stress, or living a life in cramped and dark conditions over a manure pit, those sunny-side-up eggs would taste as good? Education is the place to start, so no, not only were you not overstepping the mark, but you were also giving a voice to the voiceless. You're a good egg, Liz.

THE Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League season has reached its midway point after the first eight games of the 2021 first grade competition. This season has been one of the closest in years with just two points separating second and sixth, with the Grafton Ghosts the ladder leaders heading into the home stretch before this year's finals series. Here is how the six first grade clubs have fared so far in 2021. 1.Grafton Ghosts - 12 points: 6 wins. 2 losses. +62 (for and against). The Ghosts have set the benchmark once again as they sit two games clear at the top of the ladder. The 2019 premiers are the only team to have

beaten every club in the competition so far. 2.Bellingen Valley/ Dorrigo Magpies - 8 points: 4 wins. 4 losses. +32. The big improvers of season 2021, the Magpies already have three more wins than their entire 2019 season. Who would have thought we’d have things back in such good shape after the devastation caused by the floods only a few months ago. What a fantastic job the Greens Team have done, and acknowledging the assistance provided by Brad Fortesque and the Fortade Group Pty Ltd, Handybin Services Pty Ltd, and Coffs Harbour & Bonville golf Clubs. “Diggers Tavern” Bellingen Cup to run next Saturday By Tamara MCWILLIAM SATURDAY June 26 will showcase a local race meeting at the Bowraville race course called the “Diggers Tavern” Bellingen Cup. The Diggers Tavern have been long-time sponsors of the Bellingen cup and the Nambucca River Jockey Club are excited to bring another fabulous race day meeting to the community under their sponsorship. The day will boast a fabulous crowd with large bookings for the event already confirmed. It is a perfect opportunity

to have a fantastic family day out. Tickets are available at the gate on the day. The event will showcase a five-race program, it will have two different food outlets, two bars, TAB onsite as well as serval local bookmakers available on the day. Buses will run to this event from Bellingen straight to the Bowraville Race Course, then another bus from the Nambucca RSL to the Macksville Post Office then out to the Bowraville race course. This is a free service. The Nambucca River Jockey Club holds four successful race meetings a

year at the Bowraville Race Course. The Bowraville Cup held during September and the Phillip Hughes Memorial Race Day held on boxing day are Sky 2 Tab Meetings. “There is a change this year to the Phillip Hughes Memorial Race Day,” Geoff Harris from the Nambucca River Jockey Club told News Of The Area. “It will be held on December 28 this year, in order to not clash with other events. “The Phillip Hughes Memorial Race day is like a reunion with all of the young one’s home for the Christmas

holidays. “Women get dressed up and look great, it is a lovely day,” he said. All of the race meetings at the Bowraville Race course are run by an amazing network of volunteers. Starting with the people who mow and maintain the lawns, the farmer who donates his paddock for parking, the money collectors at the gates, to the people serving food and alcohol, these wonderful community members happily donate their time to create a top draw event for the Nambucca Valley community. “It’s a big job on the day

and they all go home tired, but they have had a great time,” Geoff said of the wonderful crew of volunteers. “The race meetings work really well, everyone has a great time. “We have a good solid meeting, and are well supported by Racing NSW,” he stated. The Bowraville Cup is the largest race meeting they hold, followed by the Phillip Hughes Memorial Race Day. “We get people travelling to the races from everywhere around NSW,” Geoff said. No matter what race meeting is on, the Nambucca River Jockey club runs a free

bus service. When the Sky 2 Race meetings are on the busses supplied by the Nambucca River Jockey Club run from Valla, through Nambucca and out to the race course and another bus from Stuart’s Point through Scotts Head then back into Macksville before heading out to the race course. NAMBUCCA Heads Island Golf Club wasn’t able to participate in the Annual MNCDGA Pennants Competition last year due to the impacts from COVID-19. Interest in Pennants was slowly waning at the Club, and we were battling to rekindle interest for this year’s competition. Largely due to the efforts of Division 3 Captain Andrew Mackinnon, Nambucca was able to field 2 Teams in this year’s competition. The competition provides the opportunity for

golfers of varying abilities to compete against similar ability players from other Clubs. This year, teams in various Divisions came from as far north as Grafton, south to Crescent Head, west to Dorrigo and included Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour, Sawtell, Bellingen, Bowraville, Urunga and Kempsey. The series provides a great opportunity for players to compete on new golf courses, catch up with old mates and meet new friends. The Division 4 team is

managed by Warren Fuller and is composed of very keen higher handicap players mainly from “C” Grade, and the Division 3 Team are mostly mid-handicappers from “B” Grade. Our division 3 team performed extremely well, having the best winning record of any team in any division, and both teams finished top of their group. The semi finals are to be played at Woolgoolga on Sunday 20 June when we face Bellingen in Division 3 and Dorrigo in Division 4.

Entries were received from Adamstown, South West Rocks and Kempsey RSL to Urunga. Play was over two days in good weather and the bowlers enjoyed the very good greens and conditions. The results are as follows, winners G Riddell, C Brownlie and R Riddell from Nambucca Heads second D Jeffrey, M King and A Low from Stuarts Point third B Foster, J Wright and S Russ from Urunga fourth A Choggs, B Sinnott

and J Shearum from Urunga the Bradman prize went to G Towner, K Hickey and B Nunn from Macksville. Bowls this week at the Macksville Country Club, Wednesday morning 9am. For the women, call the club or come along, Thursday is Men’s social bowls names in by 12.30pm for 1.00pm start, Saturday there is a Barefoot Bowls Day arranged names in by 12.30 for play at 1.00pm. It's great when clubs can work together as they have on this occasion.

SATURDAY'S weather plus the course looking a picture made for an enjoyable day. The foursome championships is a two person team event using one ball and playing every second shot. The ever consistent Allan Clarke and Beau Lavender won the gross event with John Sommerville and Noel Austin the net winners.

Runners up in the net were brothers Steve and David Hoskins. Nearest the pins were Mike Simpson, Paul Donges and Noel Austin. I'm told my playing partner's wife used a full tube of liniment rubbing his shoulders after carrying me most of the day . Liam Fuller won the midweek competition and Dave Poole took home the bickies in the chook run.

The last game played was on Club Member Michael 19 February when the two greens were earmarked for resurfacing. The Club planned a major greens renovation project to replace the old synthetic green with a new superior needle punch product. Berry Bowling Systems commenced the project in early March only to be impacted by the flooding events that occurred throughout the region on 19 March. As a result, the bases of the greens were severely damaged and rendered unfit to be played on. Nambucca Bowls & Recreation Club decided to fund one green to be ready for social bowls and work commenced a couple of weeks ago. Chairman Tony Stokes said, “Berry Bowling Systems has pulled out all stops to get the green finished to be played on today.” Men’s and Women’s bowls is an integral part of the Nambucca Heads community providing a means of socialising and exercise to its members. Unfortunately, the Annual

Ken Howard Carnival which attracts players from all over the state this long weekend has had to be cancelled again this year as one green could not support the numbers of bowlers that normally play. “It's unfortunate the Ken Howard Carnival is cancelled for another year, last year it was cancelled due to Covid, and now this, next year it will be back,” said Tony Stokes. Tony said the other green would hopefully be back in operation again soon, saying, “You need to remember people lost their homes and belongings in the March floods, the bowling greens will survive.” Social Bowls commenced at 1:30 pm with Jack Young who is the club’s oldest bowler at 96 years of age opening with the first bowl of the day. The Clubs Board of Management will negotiate the resurfacing of the second green regardless of the hold ups with insurance claims due to the flooding event.
